The Pratishthan The Dr. D. Y. Patil Pratishthan was established by Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil in 1990 with the aim of providing education in all faculties, thus spreading professional education to the deserving students and thereby helping them to realize their dreams of a professional career. The Pratishthan currently has three diverse operational locations, in the cities of Navi Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur imparting higher and professional education in all faculties. In Pune, under the stewardship of Mr. P. D. Patil, the Pratishthan has more than 50 institutions in two main campuses in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Akurdi, ranging from primary school education to postgraduate specializations in the Medical, Engineering, Architecture, Computing, Nursing, Hospitality Management, Pharmacy, and other faculties.
The Dean Dr. R.S. Dolas, the Dean of the Institution, also heads the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is an acclaimed surgeon, and an accomplished teacher. Dr.Dolas has vast experience of teaching of both under-graduate and post-graduate students. His special interests lie in orthognathic surgeries, temporo-mandibular joint disorders, & congenital disorders. He has presented many scientific papers at various national & international conferences. Dr. Dolas is also the Faculty Surgeon for the following speciality surgeries at the respective Colleges across India. T.M.J. Orthoplasty – Govt. Dental College, Mumbai and S.P.Dental College Wardha CA Mandible supra-omohyoid dissection, & Obwegeser’s grafting – Govt. Dental College, Mumbai Sub apical osteotomy maxilla Periapical surgery 2004 – Govt. Dental College, Mumbai Maxillofacial tumors at Wardha and Indore. Dr. Dolas is also active at the Inter University level across in India. Has been a examiner, P.G. & U.G. in different universities Nagpur, Pune, Mumbai, Amravati, Aurangabad, MUHS, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Amritsar, Lucknow, Indore, Rajiv Gandhi University, MGR University Hyderabad, Goa, Examiners panel DNB. He is also a Post graduate teacher for the Universities of Nagpur, Pune and Mumbai. He is Member of the Dental faculty Nagpur university 94-2004 Dr. Dolas had also attended the Short Service Commission in the Indian Army, retiring as Captain. He was a Member of the Dental Council of India, from 1994 to 2001, as well as the Maharashtra State Governor’s Nominee on the Management Council of the Maharashtra University of Health Services from 2001-2005.

The Dr. D. Y. Patil Dental College & Hospital was founded in the year 2000 by the Dr. D.Y. Patil Pratishthan and is a part of the Dr. D.Y. Patil Pratishthan’s Medical Faculties campus in Pimpri. The college is approved by the Dental Council of India, The Ministry Of Health & Family Welfare, (Govt. of India) and the Government of Maharashtra. The College is affiliated to the Maharashtra University Of Health Sciences, Nashik. The DCI gave the certification for the College’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme in 2004. The mission of the college is to provide quality education and advanced training to the students, thus producing dental graduates & post graduates who will have sound knowledge & excellent skills for rendering the best oral health care to society. The intake is 100 students per year for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme and 36 for the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programme. The college is proud of its highly qualified & experienced staff. All of the 9 faculties are adequately manned by professors, associate professors, lecturers, assistant lecturers and dental surgeons, as per the DCI norms. The College is housed in a spacious, well planned building which accommodates all the departments and their ‘state of the art’ facilities. The well equipped laboratories and infrastructural facilities are inseparable parts of the excellent academic activities. The Dr. D. Y. Patil Pratishthan has set up the college to be one of the best in the world, in terms of infrastructure and amenities. This van serves to achieve the objective of providing services to the needy people especially the economically challenged population with no transport facilities. These patients are from the rural areas, orphanages, schools, industrial workers, etc. Dental health Services are provided on regular basis on location in the rural training centre, to senior citizens at old age homes, physically handicapped children at their orphanages, and jail inmates in the jail. The department has a well informative dental health museum. The charts and models in the museum are contributed by 3rd year BDS students, post-graduate students, interns and staff members. The museum also has the facility of educating the people using audio-visual aids. Public health days like world health day, world no tobacco day, UNICEF day, Anti-AIDS day are celebrated by presenting charts, distributing pamphlets, presenting skits, donating food materials and educational materials. • Surveys are conducted to collect data on various topics (dental & non-dental) & reports are published in journals. • The Department is actively involved in NSS activities, blood donation camps, students’ visit to field programmes like water purification plant and primary health centre. • Tobacco de-addiction chewing gum was distributed to the volunteers on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day 2005. • A diagnostic & treatment camp was also held for haemophilic patients. • A booklet “Oral Health Care For Elderly People” was prepared and published for the Association Of Senior Citizen Organisations of Pune • A lecture under the Continuing Dental Education programme was organized on “Medico-Legal Aspects In Dentistry”.

Depar tment of Oral Medicine, Diagnosis and Radiology Department “Oral cavity is the mirror of human body and oral health reflects the general health status” Oral medicine is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the diagnosis & non-surgical management of medically related disorders or conditions affecting the oral & maxillofacial region. Dental radiology is the science and art involving study of x-rays and other radiant energy and its applications in dentistry. It includes radiography and interpretations of various diseases related to teeth and jaws. Oral medicine and radiology is the first step in the ladder of dentistry. Oral medicine and radiology is like foundation of a building; if the foundation is weak then the whole structure will crumble down, similarly this subject is the base of dentistry where students learn the basic science of diagnosing oral and maxillofacial diseases, the failure of which will loosen their hold on other specialties. The oral medicine clinic at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Dental College diagnoses more than 1500 patients per month. Investigative procedures like pulp-testing, biopsies etc. are also performed. After thorough case history and diagnosis, the patients are referred to the respective departments for further treatment. This department has a special detection center for oral cancer and pre-cancer patients where early detection by toluene blue, biopsy and treatment procedures with chemotherapy are carried out. In the last 4 years, more than 1000 patients with oral pre-cancer and other soft tissue lesions were treated along with regular follow-up. The department covers an area of 7000 sq. ft. which is one of the largest oral medicine departments. There are separate laboratories for the under-graduate and post-graduate sections. The department is equipped with 23 dental chairs, biopsy kits and a centralized autoclave. There is a separate departmental library with books and various journals pertaining to the subject. The department has a number of audiovisual teaching aids to improve students’ knowledge and widen their horizons, which includes a series of lecture CDs, colour slides, overhead projector transparencies, and charts and study X-ray plates. There is a separate museum with display of study models. The department of radiology has 3 intra oral x-ray machines where more than 1900 intra-oral radiographs are taken per month. The facility for specialized radiographic technique of Orthopantomogram along with lateral cephalogram attachment is the pride of the department. The department’s equipment includes all other conventional extra-oral radiographs, intra oral camera and electric pulp tester, etc.

Mobile Dental Van (Dentistry On Wheels) The department has its own well equipped dental van fitted with one dental chair, intraoral radiography machine, ultrasonic scaler, generator, compressor, autoclave, hot water sterilizer,

The department’s patients enjoy a large waiting area, fitted with comfortable seats and provided with a television set showing educative programmes, & CDs. The department also has various charts specially designed to educate and motivate the patients regarding oral disease and their prevention. Ongoing research projects in the Department of Oral Medicine, Diagnosis and Radiology are: • Clinical evaluation of tobacco related and precancerous lesions and oral cancers, • “Lasers in Dentistry - CO2 Lasers on Soft Tissue”, • Temperomandibular joint disorders – evaluation of clinical findings and correlation between clinical and radiographic findings, and • The evaluation of treatment modalities for oral submucous fibrosis and incidence of oral submucous fibrosis in Pune’s population.
Depar tment of Oral and Maxillofacial Sur gery Department Surgery The department promises to give excellent quality of treatment to its patients at minimal or no cost fees. Eminent and distinguished surgeons with scores of high academic accolades and years of experience to their credit are part of the department’s faculty. The department has a well-established Undergraduate section with adequate space and equipment. A separate Postgraduate clinic provides a complete surgical unit for each post-graduate student. A common nursing station with a separate sterilization room helps to maintain all the norms of asepsis and sterilization. There is a Minor OT for minor surgery and a Major extensive OT for oral and maxillofacial surgery. The extensive OT facility enables our specialists and PG students to operate on patients for any maxillofacial surgeries. An auxiliary departmental library with a multimedia section is made available to the faculty and post-graduate students, which helps them to stay abreast with all latest developments in the field of dentistry and technologies. Comprehensive management of all oral and maxillofacial diseases is done. Various treatment modalities ranging from orthognathic surgery, TMJ disorders, malignancies, congenital defects are carried out at absolutely minimal or no charges. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has plans to add a fully equipped trauma center with mobile emergency vans in the near future. Along with a new specialty center, this will broaden the scope of the department and the institute.

The Depar tment of Conservative Dentistry Department Dentistry.. Conservative Dentistry, as the name implies, follows the less invasive & maximum conservative techniques. Since dental pain is the most severe pain, it needs appropriate management starting with correct diagnosis & treatment with conservative approach. Aesthetic dentistry is also one of the aspects of Conservative Dentistry, which takes care of the smile of the patient. Both the treatments, conservative as well as aesthetic health care, are provided to the patients in the department of conservative dentistry at a minimal cost. The Department occupies approximately 7000 sq. ft. on the ground floor which includes undergraduate clinic, Post graduate clinic, preclinical laboratory, a seminar room and staff rooms along with a well equipped departmental museum. The department is well equipped with separate Undergraduate and Postgraduate Clinics, a pre-clinical laboratory, plaster room, library, laboratory, nurse station, computing facility, etc. Apart from the well-equipped basic requirements advanced facilities like audio-visual equipment furnished by 35mm SLR Camera, Slide Projector, LCD Projector and RVG are made available to the department. With average daily OPD of department being 50-60, the routine work carried out are the amalgam restorations, tooth colored restorations, root canal treatment, single sitting RCT, RE-RCT, inlays, onlay, post and core and aesthetic restorations like ceramic inlays, composite inlays, direct composite veneers including surgeries like hemisection and apicoectomy, crowns on endodontically treated teeth. The department caters to around 15,000 to 16,000 patients annually. The major thrust areas within the subject in which research activities are being pursued are • Nonsurgical treatment of periapical lesions using calcium hydroxide as intra canal medicament. • Incidence of non-carious lesions of teeth in local population. • Pulp & Periapical lesions. • Comparison of marginal Integrity of various restorative materials.
Depar tment of Pr eventive and Community Dentistry Department Preventive This department is located on the second floor of the Dental college and occupies 6,600 sq. ft. The Clinical section of the department has 20 dental chairs with its own reception area. The department has a separate facility for seminar room, post graduate section, and exhibition hall. A

Depar tment of Oral PPathology athology and Micr obiology Department Microbiology Oral Pathology & Microbiology, though a para-clinical subject, still renders a lot of service to the clinical practice. The department deals with the diagnosis of oral lesions with the help of different biopsy techniques, cytological examinations like fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), exfoliative cytology, etc. for effective & efficient treatment of the same. The tissue materials gathered are processed and slides prepared for subsequent microscopic examination & diagnosis. Microbiological studies are also carried out. The Clinical Pathological examinations, which are an integral part of any hospital’s diagnostic procedures, are also carried out in this department. All the reports are given promptly and quality is given paramount importance. A record is maintained for different diagnostic data which aids in epidemiological studies. Depar tment of Pr osthodontics Department Prosthodontics The Department of Prosthodontics mainly caters to patients in need of replacement of missing teeth & associated structures of the oral cavity with artificial substitutes which are either fixed or removable in nature. The department of prosthodontics spans about 12,000 sq. ft. on the first floor of the Dental college & comprises the Preclinical Prosthodontics & Dental Material Science Laboratory of 3500 sq. ft. having a seating capacity of 100. The laboratory has 2 gypsum sections with 2 plaster dispensers, 60 tables for complete denture prosthodontics with gas outlets. 40 tables for fixed prosthodontics with 40 mannequins and an acrylisation zone. The department has a separate 4000 sq. ft. Undergraduate student’s clinic with 40 dental chairs equipped with airotor attachments. The pride of the Prosthodontics department is the Specialty

G.A. room: In certain situations it is difficult or impossible to manage the child using the various behavior management techniques. Such patients are, as a last resort and as a single sitting procedure, managed by the means of general anaesthesia in the special surgery clinic. The GA room is well equipped with Boyle’s apparatus, Pulse oximeter, Ventilator, Defibrillator, Surgical suction equipment. The department has an efficient team of doctors including Dental surgeon, Anaesthetist, Back-up anaesthetist, and Pediatrician, to make the procedure successful. Brushing technique demonstration room: Here the children are taught correct brushing technique by staff members & interns to improve & maintain their oral hygiene.
Depar tment of Or thodontics & Dentofacial Or thopedics Department Orthodontics Orthopedics Orthodontics is the subject that deals with the treatment of irregularities in the teeth and jaws and the design, manufacture and use of appliances to correct such disorders. The Department of Orthodontics is spread over 8000 sq. ft. It is staffed by a dedicated, enthusiastic and accomplished team. Department has state of the art equipments and a wide variety of cases of varying complexity. The department’s facilities include Postgraduate clinic, patient waiting lobby, a Pre clinical laboratory, a Seminar room, a PG Research room, Plaster room, and a Computer room. The equipment in the department includes a thermal vacuum forming machine for accurate beautifully furnished orthodontic appliances, and a hydrosolder which produces very fine flame for precise, controlled soldering jobs.
Depar tment of PPeriodontology eriodontology and Implantology Department Periodontology is the branch of dentistry which deals with diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of periodontal diseases. The Department of periodontology is situated on the second floor in an area of about 10,000 sq. ft. This department deals with teaching and clinical training for 3rd & 4th year BDS students, interns and post graduate students. The treatment rendered to the patients include Routine scaling, curettage, gingivectomies, gingivoplasty, root planing, etc. The department has an exclusive implant surgery section. The department has its own endopore implant surgical kit. The implant surgery & placement is carried out at a nominal charge. All periodontal surgical cases are carried out by qualified & well trained staff members. Surgeries such as bone grafting, implants, plasma rich proteins, flap surgeries, free gingival grafts, mucogingival surgeries & perio – aesthetic surgeries are some of the specialty practices carried out in the department.

There is also a departmental museum, which displays various teaching aids. The Department also has an auxiliary departmental library equipped with 2 personal computers with internet connectivity at the disposal of the staff members & the postgraduate students. The department caters to about 3500 patients annually. The treatment provided includes complete dentures, partial dentures, fixed partial dentures, post & core treatments & maxillofacial prostheses. Specialty dental services rendered by the Department of Prosthodontics to its patients include cheek prosthesis, eye prosthesis, ear prosthesis, finger prosthesis.
Depar tment Of PPedodontics edodontics Department Pedodontics or paediatric dentistry is different from the rest of the branches of dentistry because it not only deals with actual patients i.e. the children, but also has to deal with their parents. Treating children is not just a one to one relationship (patient to dentist) but it includes multi-faceted relationship between child patient, parents, society & the dentist. The department of pedodontics is situated on the first floor of the College, with a total area of 6300 sq. ft. and includes a Post graduate clinic, a Sterilization area & nursing station, a Patient’s waiting lobby, a Pre-clinical laboratory, Computer room, the department’s dedicated Plaster room as well as a Play area, Toy room and a Feeding Room for the child patients. Pediatric dentistry is introduced to the students in the first semester of 3rd year B.D.S. Students appear for the university exam in the subject in the final year IInd term. All the students are well trained in the subject via theory lectures & various clinical exercises. Throughout the curriculum and in practice, the emphasis is on various behavior management techniques for children. By making use of these techniques with the child patients, the desired behavior is obtained from the children so that various treatment procedures like pulpectomies, extractions, pit and fissure sealants, fluoride application and restorations are carried out successfully. On an average the pedodontics department treats 15-20 patients daily. While 7 to 10 new patients register in OPD daily. The department has specially designed dental chairs for our patients. Chairs are smaller in size and are provided with restraining straps to manage difficult children
