Step 1. Thread a needle with an armspan of thread. For steps 1 to 9 size 11 seed beads are used. Pick up the following: 2 seed beads (sb), 1 metal round bead (mrb), 2sb, 1 fire polish (fpb), 2sb, 1fpb. Leave yourself a 30cm tail then knot the beads into a firm ring then sew through the first seed bead strung. Take care not to pull the knot into the seed bead. Step 2. Pick up the following: 1sb, 1mrb, 2sb, 1fpb. Sew down through the seed bead that is already in place as shown. Pull tight. Step 3. Pick up the following: 1sb, 1fpb, 2sb, 1mrb. Sew up through the seed bead that is already in place as shown. Pull tight. Step 4. Pick up the following: 1sb, 1fpb, 2sb, 1fpb. Sew down through the seed bead that is already in place as shown. Pull tight. Step 5. Pick up the following: 1sb, 1mrb, 2sb, 1fpb. Sew up through the seed bead that is already in place as shown. Pull tight. Step 6. Pick up the following: 1sb, 1fpb, 2sb, 1mrb. Sew down through the seed bead that is already in place as shown. Pull tight. Step 7. Pick up the following: 1sb, 1fpb, 2sb, 1fpb. Sew up through the seed bead that is already in place as shown. Pull tight. To continue go back to step 2 and repeat the 6 step sequence as many times as desired but finish at step 6. Step 8. Strap connection. Pick up 1sb and sew through the last metal bead strung. N.B. If you’ve not beaded herringbone weave before it’s best to start with size 11 seed beads as shown here. Once you’ve made one bracelet and got a feel for the stitch you can use size 15 seed beads to create a softer and finer strap. You can use size 15’s to make the toggle and loop too. Step 9. Pick up 1sb and sew through the next two seed beads and firepolished bead as shown then continue around the last ring of beads so that you exit the single seed bead added in this step. Step 10. Pick up 2sb and sew through the seed bead you’ve just come out of so that the thread is going in the same direction. To get to the right place for the next step, sew up through the first bead added in this step.
Step 11. Pick up 2sb and sew down thorough the second bead of the previous row. Step 12. Pull tight then sew up through the first bead of the previous row. Repeat steps 11 & 12 until you have the desired length for this side, If you’re not sure if you’ve got the length right bead up the other strap and check the fit – remember that you’ve got a clasp to add which, when fastened, measures 2cm.. When you’re done secure the strap beadwork by sewing through the last four beads again, pull tight and remove the needle. Don’t knot or cut the thread yet. Step 13. Thread the starting tail onto the needle and sew through until you exit after the metal bead as shown. Repeat steps 9 to 12 to create a strap on the other side. When you’re done, sew through the last four beads again, pull tight and remove the needle. Don’t knot or cut the thread yet. Set the beadwork aside so you can make the toggle bar. Step 14. Toggle bar. Thread a needle with 40cm of thread and add a ‘stop bead’ 15cm from the end. Pick up twelve size 11 seed beads – if you’re using size 15’s string an even number that gives you a 2cm length. These are your first two rows. To start row 3, pick up one seed bead, skip the last bead strung and sew through the next. Repeat this to the end of the row. Step 15. To start row 4, pick up a seed bead and sew through the last bead of the previous row. Continue adding a bead one at a time, skipping a bead and sewing through the next. You are effectively sewing a bead into the gap between two beads on the previous row. These beads that stick out are often called ‘up’ beads. Step 16. Repeat until you have 8 rows - you’ll have four beads at the top and four at the bottom. Step 17. To form the beadwork into a tube you need to ‘zip up’ the two sides. Without picking up any beads sew up through the end bead of row 1 which is along the same edge that the thread is exiting. Squeeze the two sides together as you pull the thread through. If you find that the last row of the beadwork slips out of place secure the thread first. Step 18. Sew through the next ‘up’ bead on the last row. Work back and forth between the last and first row by sewing through the next ‘up’ bead on either side. Pull firmly so that the two sides pull together.
Step 19. When you reach the end, sew down through the bead that starting tail is coming out of and then weave into the beadwork, knotting in a couple of places and trim off the excess.. Remove the stop bead from the tail and thread onto a needle. Pick up a seed bead and sew down the middle of the tube. Pull tight, pick up another seed bead and sew back the way you came. Weave the thread into the beadwork and secure as before. Step 20. Pick up another seed bead and sew back the way you came. Weave the thread into the beadwork and secure as before. Step 21. To attach your toggle bar to the end of your bracelet, rethread one of the tails. Pick up 3sb and sew through the middle of the toggle bar. Pass through a bead near to the middle on the other side then sew back the way you came and exit after the third seed bead added. Pick up 2sb and sew into the other bead of the end row of the strap. Sew the thread down this side of the bracelet and knot in a couple of places to secure. Add dabs of glue if desired and trim the excess thread on this side. Step 22. To complete your bracelet clasp, thread the needle with the remaining tail. Pick up 24sb. Sew down through the third seed bead strung. Pick up 2sb and sew into the other bead of the end row of the strap. Before securing, check that your toggle will fit through the loop; seed bead thicknesses vary so you may need to make an adjustment to its size. Finally, sew the thread down this side of the bracelet and knot in a couple of places to secure. Add dabs of glue if desired and trim the excess thread. Step 23. If desired you can embellish the edge of you bracelet. Exit through the seed bead just before a metal bead. Pick up four seed beads and sew through the seed bead immediately after the metal bead. Weave across the beadwork to the other side and repeat.

This is my take on the Golden Sun pendant by Petra Tismar from her book Perlen & Freundschaft (Beads & Friendship) it's only in German but with the fantastic diagrams I was able to manage. I've been wanting to try making her beautiful pendant for some time I did struggle at times but I'm so glad I persevered, now I need to make a chain to match so I can wear it. I hope you like it. Lynne Roberts
Your pendant is gorgeous Lynne! Your bead work looks incredibly neat and I particularly like your colour choice for the bicones. x
My latest soutache piece :) Purple is not my color but as its color of the year, so took a challenge :) Thinking of a name for this design :) Kasia Rajca
This is stunning Kasia, we're so glad to see designs inspired by Ultra Violet! We adore the royal tones here. The combination of the purple and the hints of colour from the Swarovski fancy stones is really pretty. x

Step 1. Cut an 80cm piece of monofilament and thread a needle onto either end. To help with the threading, flatten the first 2 or 3cm of the strand using chain nose pliers. String the following beads: 1x10mm 2x seed, 3x 6mm, 2x seed. Go through the 10mm bead a second time to form a ring. Position the ring in the centre so that you have the same amount of thread on either side of the 10mm bead. Step 2. Onto each strand string 2x seed and 1x 6mm. Step 3. Take another 6mm bead and pass both strands through it in opposite directions. Step 4. Onto each strand string 3x seed. Step 5. Take another seed bead and pass both strands through it in opposite directions. Step 6. Onto the left-hand strand string 3 seed beads and go through the10mm bead from left to right. Step 7. Onto the right-hand strand string 3 seed beads and go through the 10mm bead from right to left. Pull firmly to tighten the first cross. Step 8. Repeat steps 4 & 5. Repeat steps 6 & 7 but go through the middle 6mm bead at the end of the ring instead of the 10mm. Pull firmly to tighten this second cross. Step 9. Take the right-hand strand and go through the next 6mm bead. String the following beads: seed, 4mm, seed. Step 10. Go through the next two 6mm beads (avoid going through the seed beads already in place). Step 11. Take the left-hand strand go through the next 6mm bead. String the following beads: seed, 4mm, seed. Go through the next two 6mm beads. Pull both strands firmly. This completes the feature part of the ring. Step 12. Onto each strand string 3 seed beads. Take another seed bead and pass both strands through it in opposite directions. Step 13. Repeat step 12 as many times as desired to form the band part of the ring. In our example we repeated step 12, seven times. Whatever you decide, finish by stringing 3 seed beads onto each strand. Step 14. To attach the band to the other side of the ring, take the righthand strand and go through the middle 6mm bead from right to left. Repeat with the left-hand strand but this time go from left to right. Take care that the band doesn’t become twisted. Secure by going through the next 6mm and seed bead. Make a half knot then go through the next 6mm bead and seed bead. Make another half knot then go through the next two 6mm beads. Repeat with the other strand. You can pass the strand further around the ring if desired. Trim off the excess (if desired add a dab of glue to the knots).

Creating your own jewellery to wear with your Spring and Summer outfits has never been so easy! Take your favourite Preciosa flower beads and mix them with the farfalle beads and complimentary gold findings to make your own unique accessories. Why not add some of your own colourful matching seed beads or glass beads into your design? Step 1. Choose which flower beads you want to feature on your designs. You will have enough chain and plenty of headpins and eyepins to make a long chain necklace and some matching bracelets! To make each flower feature, take an eyepin and thread on your chosen beads, leaving approx. 1cm of pin at the end. Bend this to a 90 degree angle above the beads. Step 2. Take your round nose pliers and turn the pin on itself to make a loop that matches the other end of the eyepin. Turn these so they are facing the same way at either end of the pin. Make as many of these flower pins using your flower beads, farfalle seed beads and any other beads you want to add. Set these out on your bead board to see how you want to position them on your design. Step 3. Get your gold plated chain and cut it to the length you want. If you are making a bracelet with a single flower pin in the centre, remember to allow space for your toggle clasp and the jumprings in your final measurement of chain to avoid wasting chain. Attach your chain to your pin using a jumpring. Make sure the jumprings are securely closed before wearing your designs. Step 4. If you are making a bracelet, attach your second half of chain to the other side of your pin using another jumpring. Attach each side of your toggle clasp to each free end of chain using 2 more jumprings.
