BEADING TECHNIQUES Simple bead stringing Working with 2 threads
beginner intermediate expert 6
Keeping a tight thread tension
STEP 1 Cut an armspan of thread and add one half of your toggle clasp. Bring it to the centre of the thread so you have 2 ends of thread to work with. STEP 2 In the next steps, decide which order or pattern you want to add your 8mm pearls and semi precious beads. Pass both threads through an 8mm bead, 1 x seed bead, 1 x 8mm, 1 x seed, 1 x 8mm. Now put one thread to one side and continue to add 8mm beads separated by seed beads on the other single thread, until you reach the length you want your necklace to be. STEP 3 Once you've added enough beads, pass the unused strand through the next seed bead. String 8 seed beads. Bring the strand around the next 8mm bead and pass it through the seed bead immediately after it. The 8 seed beads should fit around the 8mm bead comfortably. If it is too tight, go back and add another bead. If it is too loose, go back and remove a bead or two. Then remember this amount for framing the rest of the 8mm beads along the necklace. STEP 4 String 8 more beads (or as many as you need to) and bring the strand around the next 8mm bead. Pass it through the seed bead immediately after it. Continue this pattern along the design until you have 3 x 8mm beads left. STEP 5 Thread through the last 3 seed beads and 3 x 8mm beads to match the other end of the necklace. Pick up the other side of your toggle clasp onto both threads and pass one thread back down into your necklace. Weave this thread into your work and make knots along the way. Repeat this with your tail thread to secure them both hidden within your work. Continue until you are confident your work is secure and won't unravel. You can use the same pattern to make your matching bracelets!

PANTONE'S RED PEAR This rich tone is perfect for wearing all the way through Autumn and into Winter. Combine your favourite red materials with warm bronze, brown and copper tones throughout Autumn and match them with cool silver or gunmetal tones during the Winter and towards Christmas.
This gorgeous woven cord is ideal for wearing alone, decorating with slider beads or embellishing with tiny size 15 seed beads. Once you've embellished your cord, simply finish it with a matching end cap and a clasp ready to use as a wrap around bracelet or a choker necklace.
Choose a dual tone bead like these burgundy twin holes with an iris effect. These two tone beads give movement and extra shine to an intricately woven design. You could weave them into your design at random or try positioning them all the same way around so the iris effect can be seen from one side of the design.

BEADING TECHNIQUES Bead stringing Stepping up between rows

Attaching several handmade components together
Use the 'pattern below to make the largest cluster for the centre of the necklace. To make the small and medium sized clusters, follow the bold text in the middle of the page. STEP 1 Thread a needle with 80cm of thread. Pick up 8 twin hole beads. Go through them all again (using the same holes) to form a loose ring. Position it so that you have a 20cm tail then knot the threads to form a firm ring. STEP 2 Pass the needle through the inner hole of the next twin hole bead then ‘step up’ to begin the next row by going passing the needle through outer hole of the same bead. Turn your work so that you’re going in your preferred direction. Pick up 1 twin hole bead and go through the outer hole of the next twin hole bead. STEP 3 Repeat all the way around. When you come to add the last bead, go through the last bead of the first row and then the first bead added on the second row. You may need to do this a bead at a time. STEP 4 Step up by going through the outer hole of the nearest twin hole bead. Pick up 1 x 4mm fire polish bead and thread through the next twin bead. Repeat all the way around, adding the 4mm beads between the twin hole beads. STEP 5 Exit through the first 4mm bead added. Pick up 3 seed beads skip the twin hole bead and go through the next 4mm bead. Arrange the seed beads so they sit neatly around end of the twin hole bead. STEP 6 Repeat all the way around. When you come to add the last three seed beads, go through the last 4mm fire polish bead and the first two seed beads of the 3 you added at the beginning of step 5. STEP 7 Pick up 1 x seed bead, 1 x 6mm fire polish bead and 1 x seed bead. Go through the middle bead of the next group of seed beads. Repeat all the way around. STEP 8 Exit through a 6mm fire polish bead and pick up 1 x 4mm fire polish bead. Go through the next 6mm bead and repeat all the way around, adding 4mm beads between them. To make the 2 small clusters follow step 1 and, change direction by threading through one of the outer holes on the nearest twin. Then add a single seed bead between each of the twins to fill the gaps. Weave in your threads to finish your small cluster. To make 2 medium sized clusters follow steps 1 to 3. Follow step 4 by replace the 4mm fire polish beads with 6mm fire polish beads. Then add a single seed bead between each of these beads. Weave in your threads to finish the medium sized cluster. STEP 9 To string your clusters together, cut an armspan of thread and thread your largest cluster to the centre by passing through one of the 6mm beads. String your choice of beads on either side of the cluster then add the medium clusters, a few more beads and then the smallest clusters as shown in the main image to the left. Make up the rest of the chain on either side with more beads. To finish your piece you can form small loops at the end of the chain by adding 3 seed beads, your clasp and 3 seed beads, then you thread back down the chain. Repeat this on the other side of the necklace and add 6 seed beads to make the loop, then open a jumpring and attach this on. Weave your threads back down into your design and make knots along the way to secure them properly. Trim off the excess cord once you're confident that it won't unravel.

I made this set of jewellery for a competition held by Kerrie Slade beads for international beading week 2018 using only preciosa beads. I used a tutorial by Kerrie for the bracelet and adapted the pattern for the pendant and earrings. Mary Hughes Your jewellery set is gorgeous Mary! It looks really professional and very delicate.
I made some of these clay beads a couple of days ago and used three in this necklace and added some silver coloured chain to complete the necklace. xx Wendy Wray

Your handmade clay beads are lovely Wendy! I love the marbling effect and the colours you've chosen.
I wasn't sure what to make when I was given a huge bag of mixed seed beads. In the end I threaded them onto a piece of 0.8mm wire about 4m long, then I created a long coil and threaded through some necklace memory wire. I've still got loads of beads left - any ideas? Jill Renson I love your colourful coiled bracelet Jill! Your seed bead mix would be great for using in peyote designs, loom jewellery and even crochet designs!

Cooking polymer clay
STEP 1 Make a ball from one and a half blocks of Fimo emerald green clay and roll this into a 0.5 mm sheet using the acrylic roller. Tip: Work directly on baking paper so that you don’t have to detach your design from the surface it is on and can put it in the oven without damaging it. STEP 2 Cut out your desired leaf template and place the paper template on the Fimo sheet. To get your templates, visit the project page and download your project sheet. STEP 3 Cut out the outline of the leaf from the Fimo sheet using a knife. If necessary, smooth the edges with the modelling tool. STEP 4 Roll the remaining FIMO into a long, thin sausage and cut into short lengths. STEP 5 Arrange these on the leaf to form the veins. STEP 6 Then score finer veins onto the Fimo leaf using the modelling tool. STEP 7 To create the gentle curve of the bowl, place the Fimo leaf in the metal bowl. As it hardens it will give your bowl a nice rounded shape. Then harden the leaf in the bowl in a preheated oven for 30 minutes at 110°C / 230° F. Once the bowl has cooled, remove the leaf – and you’re done! STEP 8 To make a marbled effect leaf, form two 1/2 blocks of Fimo in different colours into balls and then roll into sausages. Twist the two sausages tightly together. Roll the twisted sausage into a ball and knead it until you have created a pretty marbled effect. Next roll the Fimo ball out into a sheet using the acrylic roller. When you’ve created a lovely marbled design, cut out the leaf shape and complete the bowl as described above.
