BEADING TECHNIQUES Turning loops on eyepins Making simple wrapped tassels with thread

beginner intermediate expert

Opening and closing the loops on findings

Step 1. Take one of your ear drop frames and open it at the top. Step 2. Cut a piece of sturdy cardboard measuring approx. 4x4cm. From the reel of thread, wrap your white thread around this approx. 70 times. Pass the wire of your earring drop under all the threads. Step 3. Leave a few inches of thread and cut your thread off your reel. Move this tail thread upwards and out of the way so it doesn’t get cut. Carefully slot one side of your scissors under the threads on one side. Cut them at the base while holding the top of the top of the tassel near to the earring drop loop. Pull the earring upwards and take your tassel off the cardboard. Step 4. Take your long length of thread on your tassel and wrap this tightly around the top of the tassel, below the earring loop. Holding this in place, take a second piece of thread from within the tassel, and knot your wrapped thread to this. Knot a second time to secure. You can now trim this longer thread to match the rest.

Step 5. Make a total of 8 tassels just like the first one. Step 6. Cut a length of dark blue cord measuring approx. 10″. Position your 8 tassels around your earring like in the image below and start wrapping your blue cord once around each tassel loosely. Step 7. Once you have wrapped once around all of your tassels, gently pull each gap together and then secure this cord to the back of your earring by knotting to the cord that passed around the last tassel. Complete this section by knotting the other end.

Seafoam Hemp Semi Waxed Braiding Cord

Step 8. Repeat this process using double length of turquoise cord. Take a length of cord measuring 20″ fold it in half and knot to your first tassel. Simply bring the folded end of cord under the tassel and thread the other ends through the loop on the end. Step 9. Continue wrapping around each tassel as you did before to add another layer of colourful cord and secure it as you did with the first cord. Step 10. Thread a bead onto an eyepin. Trim and turn a loop. Step 11. Attach this pin inbetween your tassel and your earwire.

Choose a statement tassel, crystal or gemstone pendant and combine your favourite with a matching chain, long enough to fit over your head. Simply cut your chain to the length you need and attach either end to the loop at the top of the pendant using a bail or a large jumpring.

Add more colour to your crochet projects

These beautiful new cords from Miyuki can be used in a huge variety of projects from crochet and beadwork to embroidery and braiding. The thread changes colour along the length meaning it's great for using with a matching combination of beads which can be graduated in colour to match the thread as you are designing.

Milky Pink AB Czech Glass Fire Polish Beads

STEP 1 Cut 20" length of thread and add a needle. Thread your needle through an end hole on your ring and leave a 15cm tail on the other side. Thread around this hole on the inside of the ring and knot twice to the tail thread. Your knot should be on the inner edge where your first beads will then be positioned. Pick up 3 seed beads or 3 small crystals and thread over to the opposite hole. Thread down through the hole, under and back through the 3 beads in the opposite direction. Thread down through the original hole and then up through the next hole on this side. Repeat across the ring to add your beaded pattern. Always thread across to the next row on the underside of the ring, so the horizontal threads aren't visible.

Dobble Czech Glass Beads Chalk Lilac Luster

STEP 2 Once you've finished your pattern, pass through the last hole and double knot your thread as you did at the beginning. Thread through the last 2 or 3 rows of beads to hide your thread and trim off the excess once you've weaved a little way. Repeat this with your short tail thread at the other end, so you aren't left with any visible thread ends.

'Tying off' your beading thread and tail thread

Step 1. Thread a needle with approx. 2 metres of thread. Decide on the order you want to add your bicone beads along your bracelet. Separate your 5 colours of bicone beads and label them A, B, C, D and E. Pick up 4 x colour A and pass them down the thread leaving a 30cm tail. Thread through all the beads again and again until you exit on the opposite side of the circle as shown in the diagram.

Step 2. Pick up 3 x colour B and pass back through the last crystal you exited from. Thread around this new group of 4 beads again and exit through the endmost bead as shown in the diagram. Step 3. Repeat the pattern, adding a new group of 3 bicone beads in the next colours until you've used as many bicone beads as you want to, or have reached the full bracelet length you need. Put 4 x bicones to one side. Remember to leave the bracelet approx. 3cm short as you will need to add your clasp and some seed beads to either end. Step 4. When you get to the desired length, pass back through the beads until you get to the first bicone in the lower horizontal row. Pick up a seed bead and thread through the next horizontal bicone.Repeat this along the bracelet, then change direction and repeat along the top row. Step 5. Once you've added both rows of seed beads, exit through the endmost horizontal bicone bead, pick up 1 x seed bead, 1 of your spare bicones, 4 x seed beads and one half of your toggle clasp. Thread back down through the 4th seed bead. Pick up 3 more seed beads, 1 x bicone and 1 x seed bead. Thread through the other endmost horizontal bicone.

Matte Gold Plated Grey Quartz Semi Precious Charm

Step 6. Next, tie off your thread. Weave in your thread to secure the design. To do this, weave around the last couple of inches of beads, following the bead path. Make half hitch knots along the way and continue to weave until you are confident it won't unravel. If you have enough thread you can weave all the way to the other end of the design and knot it to the tail thread. Step 7. Repeat step 5 and 6 on the other end of your bracelet using your tail thread. Weave in this thread securely and trim off any excess threads once you are finished.
