For this design you will need 2 colours of beads. This project will refer to silver and dark grey beads Step 1. Brick stitch String 6 silver seed beads, move them to the end of the thread and tie the ends together to form a circle. String a further ten seed beads and pass the needle back through the first three of them in the opposite direction and up to the original circle (a loop will be created). Then pass the needle through three more seed beads from the initial circle so that you get to the other side without the loop.
Step 2. 1st row – string three seed beads in silver and three seed beads in a second colour (dark grey on image). Pass the needle under the thread between the three seed beads in the basic circle then pass the needle upwards through all three seed beads in silver. String three more silver seeds and pass the needle under the thread in the basic circle again and then pass it upwards through all of the added seed beads.
Step 3: 2nd to 5th rows. Start the next row by stringing three seed beads in silver and three beads in dark grey. Pass the needle under the thread between the first and second columns of the previous row and then pass it upwards through the seed beads in dark grey. Add three seed beads in dark grey and pass the needle under the thread between the second and third columns of the first row and then pass the needle upwards through all of these seed beads. At the end, add three more seed beads in silver, pass the needle under the thread between the second and third columns of the first row, pass the needle upwards through these.
Step 4. Sew a total of five rows using the colour scheme in the diagram which you can download below. Each row starts with two bead trios and each row contains one more trio than the previous row. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD YOUR EARRING PATTERN Step 5. At the end, sew a sixth row – the process is similar to that used in the previous rows, but the seed beads are only added one at a time (not in threes), start the row with two seed beads in silver and then add one seed bead in silver until you have added 8 in total.
Step 6. Create the fringes once this row has been completed. String three seed beads in dark grey, twenty seed beads in silver, three seed beads in dark grey and three in silver. Skip the last seed bead and then pass the needle through all of the strung seed beads, including the one from which the thread came out of at the beginning. Skip to the next seed bead and string another fringe. This time, string three seed beads in silver at the beginning of the fringe and then proceed as in the previous pattern. Sew the next three fringes in the pattern on your diagram download above. Step 7. At the end of the work, sew in the ends of the thread and hang the earring on an earring hook using the loop.

DESIGN BY SARAH MILLSOP
Circular brick stitch is created just like the flat method but is formed in the round. With each round the number of beads needs to be increased. The number of beads you use in rows 1 & 2 may vary as everyone’s tension is different but it is essential that the number of beads in round 3 is a multiple of 3. This will ensure you are able to create points all the way around. Step 1. Thread a needle with 180cm of thread. Thread a jade bead to 25cm from the end leaving the long tail. Knot the threads together tight around the bead. Slide the knot around to the hole then pass the needle through. Pull gently so that the knot disappears slightly inside the bead. Step 2 Go around the bead a second time to form a second bridge of thread hugging the bead – it should be opposite the other one so you have an equator of thread around the bead. Pass under the first bridge. Go under it again then, before pulling all the way through, go through the loop and pull so that the knot forms at the entrance to the hole. Knot the threads together again then push the needle through the bead.
Step 8 (round 2) Pick up two 11/0 beads. Pass the needle under the new thread bridge nearest to where your thread is exiting. Pull the thread through until the two seed beads sit together on top of the thread.
Step 3 (round 1) Pick up two 11/0 seed beads. Pass the needle under the bridge next to the hole that the thread is exiting. Pull the thread through until the two seed beads sit side by side on top of the thread bridge. You’ll need to nudge them into position as they’ll want to sit on top of each other. Step 4 Go up through the second seed bead and pull tight. Don’t worry if the first bead is leaning as this will be corrected when you’ve beaded all the way around.
Step 12 (round 4 – points) To form a point, string 5 beads. Skipping the bead after the one that the thread is exiting, push the needle into the next one – you don’t need to go under the bridge any more. They will form a loop.
Step 5 Add one 11/0 seed bead. Pass the needle under the bridge next to the second seed bead then go up through the bead just strung. Continue adding seed beads in this way, all the way around.
Step 15 Skip the third bead and go down the fourth and fifth. When you pull the thread through, the third bead should pop up. Step 16 String a rondelle or large seed bead . Go up through the first two beads of the next point.
Step 6 (completing the ring) To complete the ring of beads, go down through the first bead added. This will make the first bead stand up correctly. Step 7. Pass under the bridge then back up through the last bead strung - you’ll need to turn your work over to do this. Turn your work back to the front. Now, if you look at the beadwork sideway on you can see that you’ve formed a new bridge of linking threads through which you can attach the next round.
Step 9 Go up through the second bead exactly as you did in step 4. Continue in the same way but you’ll need to increase the row count by around 4 or 5 beads. To add the extra beads you’ll need to go through several bridges twice. Do this by adding the beads one at a time just like normal. You’ll need to make the decision yourself as to where to double up but it’s important that you space them evenly. Step 10 Complete the round by passing down the first bead strung in this round. Then pass under the bridge and back up the last bead strung as described in step 7. Step 11 (round 3) Add the third round in the same way as you formed the second. You’ll need to increase the bead count and it is essential that it is a multiple of 3.
Step 13 Go back up the next bead on the previous round. Continue by repeating 12&13 all the way around. Step 14 (finishing the points) Go up through the first two beads of the first point.
Step 17 Skip the third bead and go down the fourth and fifth so that the third bead pops up. Repeat steps 16 & 17 to complete.
Turn to page 12 for the next part of your tutorial >>
Step 18. Now you’ve finished your first beaded motif you can either, pause here and form it into a pendant or, go back to the beginning and make more then skip onto step 20. To make the pendant, pass the thread up through to the third bead of one of the points and string 7 beads. Go back through the same third bead with the thread going in the same direction. Pull tight, then go around the ring of beads a couple more times to strengthen. Step 19 Weave both free ends into the work knotting a couple of times to secure. You can string your completed pendant onto a necklace or ribbon either by passing directly through the beaded ring or by adding a jump ring to it first. Step 20 (constructing the collar) To link two motifs together, pass the thread up and through the third bead of a point. String the following beads: 3x seed, small bead, 3x seed. Go through the point of the next motif. Pick up a new seed bead, skip the previous bead strung and go back through the next 5 beads. Skip the first seed bead strung, pick up another new one then go into the third point you came out of at the start of this step. Go back through the beads just strung a couple more times. Weave the free end into the beadwork, knotting a couple of times and trim the excess. Repeat to add further motifs. Step 21 (Make your necklace the desired length) Secure a new piece of thread to the final point at one end. The new thread needs to be double the desired length of one side plus 20cm. String your choice of beads to make up the length of one side of your collar. Finish with a large bead and a seed bead. Skipping the seed bead go back down all the beads. Weave the free end into the work, knotting a couple of times. Trim the excess. Step 22 Repeat the method to form the other side of the necklace but this time instead of a large bead, form a ring of beads that is just big enough for the large bead to pass though (skip to the next step if you wish your necklace to be adjustable). Go around the ring a couple more times to reinforce then pass back down all the beads. Weave the free end into the work, knotting a couple of times. Trim the excess.
Step 23 To form an adjustable necklace, add an additional ring of beads linked by 4 beads. Form the loop nearest the necklace first. Go all the way around this ring one and half times. String 4 seed beads, form another loop the same. Go around this one twice then go back down the beads towards the necklace. As you only went around the first loop one and a half times, make sure you pass the needle down the half that you missed. Step 24 – Taking it further A simple way to adapt your motif design is to add additional points. Do this in stages by coming out of one of the points between the 4th and 5th bead. String some seed beads – you’ll need to try what works best. Go into the next point between the 1st and 2nd bead. Step 25 Work around the existing point and exit after the 4th & 5th bead then add the next lot of seed beads.

DESIGN BY SARAH MILLSOP
A tubular netting technique is used in this project. For simplicity, we’ve just used seed beads colours A, B, C but provided you stick to the sizes you can use any colour combination that appeals to you. Size 15 colour - A Size 15 colour - B Size 11 colour - C Step 1 - starter round Thread a needle onto about 120cm of thread. String the following beads: 1x C and 1 x 4mm fire polish bead, repeat twice. Knot into a ring leaving a 15cm tail. Then pass the needle through all the beads a second time exiting after C. Step 2 String the following: 3A, 1C and 3B. Go through the next 1C from the previous round. Repeat twice more. ‘Step up’ ready for the next by going through the first 4 beads strung in this step, you’ll be exiting after a C. Step 3 String 1 fire polish bead. Go through the next 1C from the previous round. It will look like you are skipping a 1C but this C was added in the first round. Repeat twice more. Step 4 Step up’ to the next round by going through the next fire polish and 1C. Step 5 Pull tight so that the fire polish beads just added sit between those added in the starting round. Step 6 String the following: 3A, 1C and 3B. Go through the next 1C from the previous round. Repeat twice. ‘Step up’ to the next round by going through the first 4 beads strung in this step – you’ll be exiting after a 1C. Step 7 String 1 fire polish. Go through the next 1C from the previous round. Repeat twice more. Then ‘step up’ to the next round by going through the next fire polish bead and 1C. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until you have about a 5cm length. Step 8 Repeat step 7 one more time exiting after a 1C. To draw the netting to a point, go through the next 1C then the next 1C. Pull firmly then go through all 3C’s once more. Knot the thread to the work in a couple of places. This completes the netted part of the bracelet. If you find that the beadwork is rather loose, go through all the seed beads a second time but don’t overtighten or your bracelet will be too rigid.
Step 9 String a fire polish bead then a couple of seed beads of your choice. Repeat until you’ve added 6cm of beads or the desired length to fit your wrist. Pull the thread so there are no gaps. Step 10 (See step 12 to add a metal clasp) String enough seed beads to form a ring that is the right size for a fire polish bead to pass snugly through. In this example 15A’s have been used but you must check this as beads naturally slightly vary in size. Go around the ring again. Pass back down the strap all the way to the netted beadwork. Weave the end into the work, knotting to secure. Step 11 Repeat the stringing order used in step 9 on the other side of your work until you have a slightly longer length than the other side - finish with a single fire polish bead and seed bead. When wearing, you can adjust fit simply by slipping one or more beads through the loop. Pull the thread so there are no gaps between the beads then skipping this last seed bead pass back down the strap all the way to the netted beadwork. Weave the end into the work, knotting to secure. You can add a dab of glue to the knot if you wish. Step 12 If you wish to add a metal clasp to your design instead of the beaded clasp, simply create your beaded chain on each side of your bracelet and thread approx 15 seed beads to create a loop. Thread on one half of your clasp (this may be a jumpring for a lobster clasp design). Thread back down through the first seed bead added in this loop, down the chain and secure your thread. Repeat this on the other side of your bracelet and add the other half of your clasp (add a second jumpring for a lobster clasp and attach this to the loop on the finding). TOP TIP - Bangle construction guidance Steps 1-8 are used to make a bangle. The beadwork needs to be firmer and reinforced so after forming each round, go through all the beads in that step again and pull firmly. As you work, check the length by bringing the two ends together around your wrist. To add more thread simply weave the old thread end in then attach a new piece in the same way. To join the ends string 3A, curve the bracelet around and line up the ends – make sure you don’t twist it. Go through the next 1C of the very first round. String 3B and go through the next 1C. Repeat twice. Go through the entire round again to reinforce.
