What’s In A Name?

Business names are interesting things, and it has a bit of a flow on effect when it comes to web site addresses, emails and the like. For example, apparently the longest web address in the world is anfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk. Imagine spelling that out over the phone. I suspect you would have to do it several times before the other person wrote it down correctly.

Several years ago, when we moved from the “bright gold jacket” real estate franchise to our current “South Coast Property Specialists”, it was an interesting exercise to (a) decide on the name and then (b) find a web address that made sense, wasn’t too long and was even available. We decided that www.southcoastpropertyspecialists.com.au was a little bit of a mouthful particularly when you start giving out your email address (eg carlene@southcoastpropertyspecialists.com.au). But the obvious address of www.scps.com.au was already taken by someone in the painting profession. So, in the end we settled on www.southcoastps.com.au

So, why am I telling you all this? Before I elaborate, one more bit of history. Many of you will remember the “.com era”. It was a period in the late 1990’s when there was a massive rush of businesses to get themselves online, have an internet presence, start selling items online and basically just get online. Many companies didn’t even really know what it meant at the time, but everyone was doing it. When you did get online, most businesses in Australia got a web address that ended in “.com.au”. For the past few years, the people that look after internet naming standards thought that the “.com” part of the address was no longer really required and so earlier this year, businesses such as ours had the opportunity to register for the equivalent web address that dropped the “.com” part. In our instance that would be www.southcoastps.au. However, if companies didn’t take up the new (shorter) address option then it became available on the general market. As the current owner of www.scps.com.au didn’t take up the new option, we have recently acquired ownership of www.scps.au. Now, most people also realise that you don’t need to put in the ”www” any more, so if you go to your browser and just type in scps.au you will be forwarded to our existing website. Of course, we have also kept our southcoastps.com.au address and that now forwards to scps.au.

Soon (but not yet), we will be changing over our emails to reflect the new shortened domain name and once that happens you will be able to email me at carlene@spcs.au and of course my current email will be forwarded to the new one. How simple will that be?

So, What’s In A Name? In this instance, it’s ease, simplicity and speed. We hope the new changes will make it even easier for our clients and business contacts to contact us.
