South Coast Property Specialist (Carlene Franzen) Tips: Social Media Pla&orms Banning News – The Impact on Real Estate Recently you would probably have heard about Google and Facebook threatening to stop posts of news links and pages in response the government proposed News Media Bargaining Code legisla+on. Indeed, Facebook went one step further and did stop pos+ng news content for several days. It is interes+ng to note that both Google and Facebook treat news slightly differently. The Google Search capability is very closely linked to news stories and the publishers of those stories do not necessarily provide their content voluntarily as the Google search engines thunder off into the internet indexing stories that it finds. Facebook however, have users or publishers who choose to post news onto the pla4orm, which in turn gives them an opportunity to sell subscrip+ons to their publica+ons and to grow their reader While most people ini+ally didn’t think too much of it, the flow on effects where quite interes+ng to observe as it seemed to impact some organisa+ons that were not par+cularly expec+ng it. Companies such as realestate.com.au and Domain were classed as news providers and so the links from their sites were unable to be displayed. This meant that the property lis+ngs were also unavailable to be viewed. The fact that Facebook did this without giving businesses prior no+ce made it a very remarkable turn of events. It appears that Google has now come to some sort of “resolu+on” with the government over the issue and Facebook has now restored news content to its pla4orm so I suppose it is a ques+on of where to from here? It is obvious that companies shouldn’t put all their eggs in one basket to ensure that if there is a disrup+on to online services from one provider then alterna+ves do exist. We suppose that in reality if content isn’t available on one pla4orm then users will simply seek out the informa+on they require on another.
