Happy New Year and welcome back to another edition of Rex Driver, hope everyone had a great Christmas and an even better New Years. This year we had some of the hottest days on record in December, so hopefully everyone kept cool and had a safe and fun time. The WRXSA Christmas BBQ fell on one of those scorching days! With temps into the 40s low numbers were expected, but it looks like nothing can keep committed WRX drivers away. The BBQ was a massive success still pulling in a big crowd and that jolly red guy managed to keep the Christmas spirit alive with all the young ones.

Some great thinking from committee members provided extra relief from the heat. The big lush trees on the grounds providing a lot of shade but the water pistols and extra ice-cream set it all off. Big thanks to all that help make events like that possible and for the Christmas BBQ a big thanks to Eblens Reynella for providing the BBQ and meats. With the festive season just behind us it's time to start planning on joining in on some of the great social and motor sport events we've got coming up this year. With so many fun events coming up, it's like Christmas all year round.

Seth Coultas

As we wrap up another year it is hard not to look back and admire what we have achieved as a club. The jewel in the crown would have to be our Collingrove track day which would have to be one of the clubs biggest events for at least the last few years. We have also run another very successful Club Championship along with cruises and social events, all of which has helped contribute to strong membership numbers showing that there are still plenty of fellow Subaru drivers out there that want to be involved in a happy and healthy part of South Australia’s car scene.

As always I have done my very best to bring together another bumper edition of Rex Driver and would like to once again like to thank everyone that contributed content; without you this magazine couldn’t exist.

In this edition we wrap up the 2015 Club Championship with some very eventful hill climbs (Collingrove & Willunga), get to know a couple of our members and their cars a bit more; race out of crater at The Legend of the Lakes; make some noise in the city at the Victoria Park Sprint; compare power figures at the WRXSA Dyno Day and find out what Subaru’s have been up to around the world. This In putting together the Rex Driver Magazine I try and edition is so jam packed that as I finished putting it capture as much of this as I can, and while it is hard to together I realised that I had forgotten to include the put it into words, it is the enthusiasm of people that I SA Twilight Time Attack! Rest assured I will make sure it has room in the next issue. speak to at events that keeps my love of the scene strong. Catch you all later!

2015 Club Championship Summary: The 2015 S&J Automotive Club championship has wrapped up after another huge successful year of numerous events! A massive total of 46 WRXSA members participated in various events associated on the Club Championship Calendar, widely helped by having our own private Collingrove Day in September! Even without the Collingrove Day, the club saw 32 members on the calendar, that’s up from 22 last year! We also have an increase in associate members joining fellow Subaru drivers to create a bigger and better club. This is fantastic for the club as we all out together as a group and shows great reputation as one of SA’s most active clubs in motorsport. Well done all for coming out as a club. No doubt several Collingrove Hill Climbs were everyone’s favourite event this year but another huge highlight was the Old Willunga Hill Climb, seeing 11 members enter! Two Sprints, Phillip Island and Time Attack Twilight at Mallala proved popular. Unfortunately OZGymkhana started off well but with Tailem Bend Motorsport Park developments underway, a few final rounds were dropped and also dropping the club championship from 12 rounds to 11 rounds. End results were based on 7 of your best rounds and one of the three disciplines required to give us the 2015 Grand Champion. 2015 S&J Automotive Grand Champion went to Jason Bartsch in his white 2006 STI. Jason had an impressive year of new PB’s and outrights to top the leader board with a final score of 165 points after dropping four worst rounds. Well done Jason, back to back championship awards. A Grand Champ trophy and a $1200 S&J Automotive voucher were awarded. 2nd Place runner up went to Seth Coultas who was running closely behind Bartsch to just miss the title by 21 points. A runner up trophy and $200 S&J Automotive voucher was awarded. Class Results were calculated from the total number of point’s earnt from every event with no disciplines. This is the outright final scoring for each class win.

1st Place Open/Race Class went to Jason Bartsch who ran away with a total of 182 points for the year to take the race class by far with his 280kw plus STI. Another trophy and $200 S&J Automotive voucher to his tally. 1st Place Modified Class was unexpected but great achievement of Equal wins for Seth Coultas and Matt Knighton. As we were all watching Seth run at Jason for Grand Champion, a surprise jump on the leader board from Matt Knighton at Collingrove Day saw both battle for Modified Class in the last round at Old Willunga Hill Climb! And the result was a dead draw both on 142 points total with equal first place trophies and $200 S&J Automotive vouchers! And Rookie of the year, a trophy for those newcomers to WRXSA motorsport, went to Zoe Rule for her achievement in competing in most major events for the year with great results. So there we have it, another massive exciting year all the way to the final round of the S&J Automotive Club Championship. Again proving that the unique scoring of Personal Best combined with outright times is the most exciting system in years among club members. And big thanks to our Club Championship sponsor, S&J Automotive for great prizes and support. Be sure to ask Sean and the crew on how best to achieve your motorsport needs for next events. I personally have stepped off Club Championship coordinator as a personal break for 2016, to work on some bigger events for WRXSA throughout the year. I am working with Subinats nationals in July and Time Attack Twilight Mallala for October and of course our private Collingrove Day again in September among some other plans for the club also. Regular motorsport participate, Tania Langcake is coordinating the new Club Championship and has already marked another 12 rounds ready for new competition for another year. See you on the track!

Damien Hirst

1st Place Standard Class went to Zoe Rule with a trophy and $200 S&J Automotive Voucher. Zoe led the standard class all the way in her blue 1999 WRX, with a total of 70 points. 1st Place Associate Class was Nick Galliford in his R33 Skyline finishing just 3 points over David Rowe’s Evo7 to take Associate with a total of 64 points. A trophy and $200 S&J Automotive voucher was the reward for showing it can be done without an Evo! Left to Right: Zoe, Jason, Seth & Nick

Damien Brand Hello everyone. It is my pleasure to share with you a bit about myself and my beloved 2 door sti. I am a 3rd generation viticulturist from the Coonawarra wine region. The Brand family have long been known for their fine red wines and their love of motorsport. My father and his brother both had rally cars and my brother and cousin both raced Subaru’s in the ARC and SARC. Naturally, I have always been a big rally fan. Particularly the WRC. I love the look of the tarmac rally cars and have tried to emulate that look with my car.

I have spent the last 10 years modifying and competing in this car. I am always looking at ways to improve it. I always want to go faster! It has been a blast competing in various events over the years and the best part has been many new friends I have made along the way. If you see me at an event come say hi and have a chat. If you are thinking about competing in any of the events in this years S&J Club Championship, then I strongly urge you to get out there and have a go. These events are all about having fun in your pride and joy with other like minded people. The WRXSA crew and the whole motorsport community are a great A Subaru first caught my attention back in the mid 90’s. I was mesmerised by Colin McCrae’s driving style bunch of people. and the distinct sound of the boxer engine. As a teenager I dreamed of owning and one day racing a The racecar: This car is the second WRX I have owned. I bought my WRX. first brand new back in 2001. I became a WRXSA member for a few years back then but living 4 hours from Adelaide made it hard to participate in any club activities. I had a lot of fun in that car but it got to the stage where I wouldn’t drive it, for fear of defect, so it was time for something new. A white 1997 JDM sti V3 type R was purchased and the race car build began.

Fast forward to 2006 and that dream had become a reality. My first race was the first ever “Legend of the Lakes” Hillclimb in Mt Gambier. I was on a high just to be competing, so to discover I was 4th outright after the first day was a big surprise. At that stage the car was mechanically stock. These days there is barely an original part still on it!

Tarmac rally was the plan originally but ultimately I decided Hillclimb was a cheaper, better option. The relatively free rules with Hillclimb allows me to modify my car far more than is permitted in tarmac rallies. I enjoy working on and improving my car almost as much as I like thrashing it up a hill or around a track.

Speedflow fittings and Teflon braided fuel lines throughout. Link G3 ecu tuned to around 260kw on United E85. Driveline: 05 JDM sti 6 speed DCCD gearbox and r180 rear Diff. 05 sti driveshafts and 5x114 hubs. Billet flywheel and Extreme clutch. Brakes: Brembo GT 6 piston monoblock callipers with 350mm x 34mm rotors (front) Brembo 2 piston callipers with pattern matched rotors (rear) Winmax pads. Braided brake lines. Brake booster removed. Custom hydraulic hand brake. Inside: Stripped. Sparco race seats. TRS 6 point harnesses. Sparco steering wheel. Rallytech carbon fibre door cards and firewall/parcel shelf.

Here is the current spec list, at time of writing; Shell: Seam welded. Side dowels added for jack stands. Walker Chassis Chromoly rollcage. Body: Resprayed Ford Blueprint blue. 22b replica front bumper.22b replica rear wing. Seibon carbon fibre doors, bonnet, boot and rear diffuser. Custom carbon fibre front splitter for the faster events. Guards rolled, pulled and trimmed (and still the wheels rub!) Engine: Original ej207 block with billet rods and ARP head studs. Garrett GTX 30/71 turbo. Process West VMount intercooler/radiator with custom piping by NDRFab. Custom intercooler water spray. Process West oil cooler. Cosworth sump. Deatchwerks DW300 in tank fuel pump. 3 litre surge tank. 2x Bosch 044 feed pumps.

Wheels/Tyres: Various rims from 18x7.5-18x8.5. Tyres ranging from 235 Goodride semi slicks to 245 Avon Hillclimb soft, full slicks. If you are after some great tyres give Mark Povey at SA Motorsport Tyres a call. There are numerous other little mods on the car. I have spent 1000’s of hours working on this thing and plan to keep improving and racing it. Special thanks has to go to Sean Day, his family and the whole team at S&J for their continued support over the years. I’d also like to thank the WRXSA committee members for all the great work they have done for this club. 2016 is sure to be an exciting year for WRXSA and I hope to see you at an event soon. Member Profile:

Wayne Austen I first became interested in motorsport when Nigel Mansell’s championship hopes ended with a spectacular tyre failure, on the main straight of the season ending Australian Grand Prix. This of course was Adelaide 1986. Fast forward to 1997 and I was living in South London, after learning to drive I purchased a 1985 Renault 5 GT Turbo. Around this time the Internet as we know it now didn’t exist, so finding solutions to problems like over heating was very difficult. It just so happened that my R5 GT was a complete lemon. I remember taking a girl out on a first date in that car, she was so impressed when I picked her up. The Sub’s were so huge there was no room in the boot at all. What she didn’t know, but soon learnt, was that I had to pull over every 10 minutes to let it cool down. I was late dropping her home and she wasn’t allowed to see me again.

For me the decision to get a 6spd VX SS II was one I regretted as soon as my friend got a 2004 STI. I was eventually forced to sell the VX when my partner and I got a house together. Along with the mortgage came a 2000 Astra. I read the press release for the MY16 FA20 powered WRX and planned the inevitable debate with my partner on “yes a WRX is a family car”. 20 years in sales didn’t fail me, and I was off to the dealership for a test drive. I should mention here that I had read all the debates on the forums, many old school heads not impressed with the death of the UEL rumble.

Personally I decided to trust the Subaru engineers, and I can say after 3 months of ownership of the MY16 WRX Premium 6 speed, my trust was well placed. The steering response really matches the agility of the car, you can throw it into a corner and body roll is nonexistent. I’m not a good enough driver to push the Besides leaking coolant and not getting second dates, limits of the suspension, chassis and tyres, but this car something more important happened in 1997. The Eblens Subaru Collingrove Hill Climb Challenge. What a fantastic day for the club to all be together as one with our very own motorsport event. With the help of our new committee, and full support of forty members entering we have had one of the most successful days in the club for years.

Not only was the event successful but so were everyone’s run times. Personal Bests were smashed to a new level. Newcomers to Collingrove also setting very competitive times for first time up the hill. But overall even without the time sheet, fun was had with every run with no incidents or issues throughout the day. Passenger rides proved popular and some driver training was much appreciated. A big thank you to EBLENS SUBARU for their full support of the event and Shaun Beshara for organising on EBLENS behalf, a few display WRX’s and cooking a huge BBQ lunch. It was great to see Shane of S&J AUTOMOTIVE and Mark Povey of SA MOTORSPORT TYRES come out to help and support club members also. It was my pleasure to organise the day and it was all worthwhile with club members making this happen by entering and supporting each other to get the very best out of WRXSA! Thank you all. Hello fellow WRXSA members, Here’s hoping you have all recovered from your weekends racing antics and aren’t suffering too much post racing depression. I just want to take this opportunity to reflect on and recap my experience from the weekends Hillclimb Challenge.

My launches throughout the day got gradually more aggressive as I raised the revs that little bit more each time and surprised me as to how much pull my car has with its new parts and tune. The first split dropped to 7.3 seconds and this was without the use of launch control or flat foot shifting which I will be sure to use at the next event. On top of this, the auto blip on The Eblens Subaru Collingrove Hillclimb Challenge was downshift made coming into corners at speed a lot easier and made gear changes smooth and effortless. my first ever proper event and damn it was fun. Not only did I have a blast but it was done surrounded by The adrenalin pumped through my veins every time it close mates and support from the whole club. This was my turn to line up on the starting line, with all made for a very enjoyable experience and having Mathew racing along side me made for some eyes on me and that glorious burble coming from my exhaust. As I write this I am getting excited at the interesting competition. thought of dumping the clutch and racing to the top of the hill while listening to the boxer rumble echo The weather was mint and couldn’t have asked for a better day with the sun out making for a nice sticky around me. track. Plus the addition of the Eblens Subaru BBQ This event was extremely well organised and ran providing the meat and water topped the day off smoothly all day and I just want to say a huge thank nicely. you to all who made this event possible, to all the officials who gave up their Sunday to let us all race and My first run of the day was a nice and slow 40.8 for each and every member who came out on the day second run which gave me the opportunity to study to compete and cheer everyone on. Thank you. the corners before going hammer and tong at full boost. As the day progressed, I gradually grew my man I highly recommend this event to anyone who is trying hood and held the go pedal for longer into the corners. This resulted in my times dropping by 0.4 of a to decide if it is for them or not. It has shown me what my car is capable of and given me a new love in how it second each run and by the end of the day, I was truly drives. I honestly never knew my car could steer running a 38.5 second run and still had way more to so well and launch so hard. give.

Bring on the next event! Brad Halliday

I have to agree with everyone so far regarding the Eblens Subaru Collingrove Hillclimb Challenge… Could not have hoped for a better event in every respect. Huge thanks to the weather, the people, the cars, the track, the times, the organisers, the marshals, the sponsors, who all worked together for the best day I’ve experienced at Collingrove in 4 years of racing! Add to that, my own personal PB that I’ve struggled to improve on for 2 seasons got smashed! All runs except the last one which I aborted (bit of a sideways scare) were quicker than my old PB Old PB was 36.50, new PB 35.78… not quite up there with the leaders, but well happy to be pushing the Foz somewhere close to some of the other weapons and drivers out there. Well done all, bring on next year! Russell Badenoch

First up I hope all of my fellow WRXSA members enjoyed the day as much as I did!

I’ve spent a few weekends at Collingrove recently including 2 weeks prior at the hill climb state champs so I’ve had a few runs! My day started off in the worst way possible with a half spin coming off the wall on coldish tires and low pressures I popped a tire off the bead... definitely not the best start to a morning. Big thanks to Mark from SA Motorsport Tires for the quick nitrogen fill and Shane from S & J for the temp wheel alignment I was back up and running. I didn’t even miss a round! Whilst the car was far from perfect it was so much better after the rear toe adjustment! I didn’t expect to be able to run close to my recently set PB of 34.12 but in the 5th round I managed to run a time I thought impossible, running a 33.96 and backing up with a 34.04 in the last run of the day!

Congrats to everyone who competed, set a personal best, especially Jason for getting into the 33’s – such a massive achievement, I know how much work you have put into your car the past 12 months! Also to Russell to for getting into the 35s! Thanks to the committee, sponsors and officials of the event without which we wouldn’t be able to do these events. To the WRXSA community, As a new member to the club, and to motorsport itself, I had an absolute blast at the Eblens Subaru Collingrove Hillclimb. I should say, firstly, that I am currently on my L plates and am 16 years old. The day could not have been better, the weather was perfect and the event was run smoothly by all organisers and officials. Big hats off to everybody involved. As it was my first motorsport event, I certainly wasn’t looking for the best time or to beat anybody at their own game. I was, however, certain that I would set a personal best up the hill. Throughout the course of the day, my times (and driving skills) improved immensely and I came home with a time of 41.3 seconds. I should also say that it was my first time driving the car, a 2000 WRX STI RA in white. With the help of John Schaefer (my dad), I kept the car, my driving lines and times in order and I can say that we were both extremely happy with our driving. I can’t wait until the next driving day and I am happy to see that everybody, as part of the club, is happy with the first WRXSA standalone event. Once again, thanks to everybody who helped put this event on and made it so successful. Thomas Schaefer

There are few things in life that I am excited to wake up early for and ‘race day’ is right at the top of the list! There was an extra level of excitement due to the fact that this was the first significant motorsport event the club has organised and the first ever WRXSA only Collingrove Hillclimb. With nearly 40 cars competing I knew it was going to be something special. With the car fully loaded and the sun just beginning to rise I set off down Gorge Road towards Collingrove (never a bad way to start a day). With a clear run the whole way I arrived to find that apart from a couple of the officials I was the first person there, after a quick chat I unloaded the car and sat back to admire what was going to be perfect weather for racing. As Soobies of all makes and models started to roll in and the pit paddock started to fill I had nothing but admiration for the dedicated committee members who had committed blood sweat and tears to get this off the ground and were now busily getting everyone’s paperwork organised so we could all get started. Despite limited experience the sign-in and briefing all went very smoothly and we started our sighting and passenger laps on time which was a real achievement. Then it was onto racing! With perfect weather and a near new set of semi-slicks I was hoping to take a descent chunk out of my previous PB time; and with some helpful advice from fellow club members this was achieved! I managed to knocked a whole 1.53 seconds off my PB, achieving a time of 35.16 which while not the fastest for the day, was the best PB improvement and enough give me the top points for the Club Championship, so yeah, pretty happy about that! Seth Coultas

What a great day. Great weather , great crowd. Thanks for organising. Gareth Scanlen

What a great day. Perfect weather and awesome atmosphere. Thanks heaps to all the hard working members who made it happen. Was great to see so many first timers having a go too.

Firstly I want to say a huge well done and high 5 to everyone involved in organising yesterday's hill climb day. Hirsti did a bang up job getting the day sorted, as did the whole committee!! I've been around the club for just over 10 years now, not always active but always around. Sunday was a major accomplishment for the club and I was pleased I could be there and be apart of it!! Also high 5 to Jason for popping my hill climb cherry. That was my first ride upstage hill and what a ride it was!! Also Mark backed it up with even more enjoyment for a passenger ride! Well done to everyone, was a cracker day!! Shane Sickerdick S&J Automotive

Had an absolute ball today, couldn't think of a better environment for a first run up Collingrove. Thanks everybody for being awesome! I have also found my new love, Launch Control!!! Jacob Richards

Thanks to everyone on here who made yesterday possible! It was my first motorsport event and I had a absolute blast. Despite driving a completely stock wrx (except a catback) I managed to grab a 37.81. Not fast by any means but far exceeded my expectations. Can't wait to do it again! Mathew Langbrandner

‘Dust, dust, and more dust’ was the name of the game as the Scouts Rally of SA finally hit the Mt Crawford area on 24-26 October after being from Winter by the governing ARC body. A much tighter format of old, new and recently added stages was centred around the Chalks Campground of Mt Crawford Forest with a

special stage at the Gawler Showgrounds. There would be no council road stages to the south this year. The new format promised less travel time between stages for spectators and competitors alike. The former spectator area at Forties was part of the Crawford stage so the spectators were now at Chalks.

Spectators and photographers on hand to see the Side-by-Side class Can-Am Maverick launch into the Mineshaft

Friday had only ARC, ARC 4WD, the ‘farm machinery’ or ‘Side-by-Side’ and one Historic category car, a Porsche 911 of Jeff David competing. Qualifying occurred on a shortened Crawford stage in the morning before the rally began properly very late in the afternoon. The short Friday test of 4 stages included Telegraph Road 1, Gum Flat 1, Crawford 1 and Crawford 2 (the latter run as a night stage), a novelty for the Scouts Rally of SA. Hanging dust meant cars were released at 2min intervals with talk that the night stage might even be longer. SARC drivers Stephen Mee/Damien Reed (Mazda Familia GTR) and Guy Tyler/Steve Fisher (EVO 5) elected to run in ARC 4WD class on Friday and then SARC for the next days. Telephone Road (SS1), a rehashed Dewells stage but without the water, is just north of Cricks Mill Road, the main access road to the Mt Pleasant service park. It has fast council roads and forestry logging roads, some with notorious ball-bearing surfaces. Only 5 ARC cars (2WD) were competing and it was Molly Taylor with her European rally experience and recent Heat win outgunning the boys by about 2secs. Tony Sullins/Julia Barkley and Eli Evans/Glen Weston, both in Citroen DS3 RSTs were the closest chasers. The 4WD honours went to (in order) Marcus Walkem/Scott Walkem (EVO 9), Mick Patton/Bernie Webb (EVO 10) and Tyler >>>

Stephen/ & Brent MacKenzie in ARC class getting big air at the Mineshaft

>>> in his much older EVO 5 showing local knowledge and his talent. Mee put in a respectable 7th place. Gum Flat stage (SS2) located south of the South Para Reservoir included a triple caution culvert and roads through pine and native forest. In ARC, Taylor won the stage again from Evans by 1.2secs, and now held a slender 3.5secs lead. Meanwhile, Sullens had dropped back to 3rd place.

In 4WD class, local driver Tyler couldn’t match the fast times, dropping back to 5th. Harry Bates/John Maccarthy (Toyota Corolla S2000) stormed through to claim 2nd outright, behind 1st placed Walkem. Mark Pedder/Dale Moscatt in a Peugeot 208 Maxi were in 4th. The best placed Subaru was 7th placed Andrew Penny/Rhys Llewelyn. Mee had dropped back to 9 th towards the rear of the class. Crawford 1 (SS3) would be the drivers’ first go at the ‘Mineshaft’ and new final section and was run late at 6pm. Evans blasted though, winning the stage by 4secs to now take

the overall lead by 1.2secs. Stephen and Brent MacKenzie’s aggressive highest jump of the Mineshaft indicated they were either serious or very brave,. It paid off as they won the stage and now held 3rd place overall. Retirements in the 4WD class included Adrian Coppin/Erin Kelly (Corolla Sportivo….can you actually buy a 4WD Corolla?) and Chris Higgs/Kirra Penny in the Subaru WRX STi. These did not affect the top order and Walkem continued on his winning way, but Pedder in the Pug was now in 2nd place overall. Bates was still in 3rd, carrying on the famous Bates tradition. Best placed Subaru was Penny in 6th. The cars headed back to service to fit spotlight clusters for the upcoming night stage to start at 8:30pm.

Jamie Pohlner/Ben Judd in the SARC on the Corryton Park stage

Dale & Nicholas Cagney in SARC spin out on Telephone Road stage

Evans wasn’t afraid of the dark and easily won Crawford 4 by about 18secs to take out Heat 1, with Taylor a very creditable 2nd and Mackenzie in 3rd. In 4WD, while Walkem continued on confidently for the Heat 1 win, Pedder floundered in the forest and allowed Patton back onto the podium for 2nd after being 4th at the end of the previous stage….and obvious master of the dark! Bates held his 3rd place and Guy Tyler rounded out the day in 5th, with Penny in the STi coming home in 6th. Saturday There were many more stages than Friday. Gum Flat 2 (SS5) and Crawford 3 (SS6) were first before tackling SS7-10 (see below), a rerun of Telephone Road (SS11) and then the first runs through the new Waterholes 1 (SS12) stage and QH 1 (SS13) before the three runs through the short Gawler Showgrounds stage. QH was the reverse of the 2014 HQ stage. Stages 7-10 were council road stages Buddys (SS7), Corryton Park (SS8), Trial Hill (SS9) to the north of Mt Crawford and Cromer (SS10) to the south east. These would only be run once on the weekend. In 2015, Corryton Park and Trial Hill were created as separate stages after the longer combination in 2014 had to be shut down after two serious accidents resulting in most entrants failing to complete many the true rally stages. >>>

In ARC, Eli Evans in ARC took out every single stage of the day to totally dominate Heat 2 and win by approximately 26 seconds. MacKenzie started off strongly being 2 nd placed after stages 5-7, with Taylor striking back to be in 2nd place after stages 8-13. Taylor succumbed in the Gawler stages, being beaten, firstly by 1sec and then a whopping 15secs on the final run through, handing the 2nd podium spot on Heat 2 place to MacKenzie. Fourth for the day was Ashlea James in a Volkswagen Polo. Sullins would retire the Citroen DS3 on the Buddys stage (SS7), and sadly the best sounding car in the field, the Porsche of Jeff David could not get past Cromer stage (SS10). Stephen Mee/Damien Reed’s rally was restricted to just Heat 1 4WD class Neil & Andrea Gehan in SARC flying high on the last run through the Crawford stage.

In the 4WD class, the overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were the same for every single stage throughout the day, with Walkem (EVO 9) once again winning the Heat, followed by Bates in the Corolla and Patton in the EVO 10. Pedder would take out 4th, with Penny (STi) in 5th place.

The attention turned to the SARC’s 17 drivers starting their Heat 1 of the rally. The championship was a dead rubber for 1st place with Tyler wrapping it up at Robertstown. The first casualty of the day was immediately after the first corner of the first stage of the day! Mee/Reed in the Mazda Familia GTR succumbed to yet

Molly Taylor/Bill Hayes in ARC had a consistent weekend

Marcus & Scott Walkem in ARC 4WD showing a clean set of heels

another gearbox related retirement. Tyler, today running in SARC totally dominated the day by winning every stage in true 2015 SARC champion form. Apart from a 2nd place by Jamie Pohlner/Ben Judd in a Subaru WRX STi on the first stage of the day, Gary Brown/Mike Dale in the trusty old

Mitsubishi Galant showed his experience and that the old girl still had plenty of life left in her, finishing 2 nd on every other stage. Pohlner had to settle for 3rd yet again, his usual position it seems these days. Despite 4WD cars in the SARC it was the 2WD Ford Escort BDG of Wayne Mason/David Langfield that was to end up next just off the podium. They recorded 4th on just about every stage in a consistent run. Despite the disadvantage of 2WD, Andrew Gleeson/Fred Brewer in the Datsun Stanza ended on 5 th for the Heat 1, before the Subaru of Neil Gehan/Andrea Gehan in 6th. The SARC entrants were to only have one run of the Gawler Super Special. Kristian Wohlstadt/Alison Short and Tyson Brown/Kim Brown, both in Subarus were to retire on SS7 and SS10 respectively, not a good showing for Subaru. Sunday Sunday and Heat 3 was begun by the last run through Crawford 4 (SS17) for the weekend with only a small crowd of spectators on hand at the Mineshaft. By this stage of the event the field had dwindled considerably with several retirements on the previous 2 days. Only 3 ARC cars would start, and if they all held it together would all end up on the podium! Eli Evans recorded a clean sweep of Heats for the weekend. Molly Taylor showed her experience with 2nd place and Ashlea James/Dennis Neagle bringing up the final 3rd place with the VW Polo.

Jeff David in the Porsche 911, the sole Classic category car

The ARC 4WD field would only have 8 cars, only to have 7 finishers after the retirement of Higgs in the Subaru on the epic Goldfields stage (SS20). Walkem carried on with his form placing 1st overall after each of the first 3 stages but things were about take a dramatic turn. He was only 1.3secs ahead of Patton and about 5secs ahead of Bates. Bates in the Corolla would let loose and finished Goldfields 6secs clear of Patton, but more importantly had smashed Walkem by 9secs taking the 1st spot overall, relegating Walkem to 3rd. Bates’ aggression continued taking stage win after stage win to win Heat 3 and make Neil Bates proud. Walkem recovered on the Gawler super specials to take back 2nd outright and leave Patton with 3rd place. Fourth place went to Mark Pedder, accustomed to this position the entire event, and 5th to Scott Schubert/Sam Riggs in an EVO 3. The only remaining Subaru was the non-turbo RS Impreza of Mark Beard in 7th place. This is the last year that the 2WD ARC cars will be the premier class, some arguing the experiment didn’t quite work. The 2016 season sees 4WD Kit cars joining and hopefully something exciting out of the Subaru stable….now just to entice Cody Crocker out of the farm tractors and back into a rally car!

Andrew Penny/Rhys Llewellyn in ARC 4WD ploughing through the gravel

SARC was arguably the most interesting. Tyler was expected to continue where he left off the day before. Instead he plummeted to 9th after an intercooler hose fell off in Crawford 4. Worse was to come for his main rival Gary Brown as the Galant hit a tree head on, and was out. The Subaru of Gehan succumbed to engine problems in Waterholes 2 (SS19) and also retired. Pohlner took his opportunity to win the heat and led overall at the end of SS 17-21 (Crawford 4, Telephone Road 3, Waterholes 2, QH 2 and Goldfields). Would this hard fighting Subaru team finally be rewarded? Sitting in 2nd place after SS1721 was the potent Escort of Mason. Meanwhile Tyler set about trying to claw his way back into contention with the EVO 5 back to its best. He won stage after stage and started to climb. By the end of Goldfields (SS21) he was back in 3rd such was his determination. Tyler beat Pohlner by 19, 27 and 22secs for stages SS17-20, and it would get tight at the top. Pohlner’s day went south as the engine let go on the first of the Gawler super specials. The win would be Tyler’s, yet again. Mason was a distant well-earned 2nd place for a non-4WD car. Third place for Heat 2 went to Nissan Stanza of the hard charging Gleeson. Sadly all Subarus failed to finish Heat 3, a sad day indeed.

Last session was exciting. We had our final run, which we both were having fun on the track almost side by side. Then as we came into the pit area, Natsoft timing was down and we had to wait an agonising hour to hear our times and find who has won the category between Jason and I. Jason had that point of a second over me and I knew it would be hard to beat after running old brakes. But never know with motorsport. After a nail biting wait for times, it was Jason who jumped for joy, and well deserved as we both drove hard and fast, like real racing. Jason Bartsch was the 1st place winner of Tarmac Performance category by that point of a second over me in second place. Well done Jason, it was a great rivalry race which I thrive for.

Big shout goes to the Sporting Car Club for fantastic organisation of such a huge event which saw over 20,000 spectators past through the gates, with a lot of keen formula one fans checking out Senna’s old Lotus and Camel F1 Cars and old Group A V8 Supercars were also a highlight. I’m definitely looking forward to entering this fast paced event again in 2016.

2015 WRXSA Go-Kart Championship Wrap Up 2015 marked the inaugural WRXSA Go Kart Championship. In the past Go Kart events have been very popular with members, and with this inspiration Brendo spawned the idea of a Go Kart club championship, to be run alongside the main Club Championship. 4 rounds encompassing Adelaide’s premier (and only) Go Kart circuits – Richmond, Gepps Cross and Pooraka – were planned out with the finale set for Richmond with a teams based enduro. The first three rounds were run in a ‘grand prix’ format. This entailed at least 3 races and a qualifier which set the start sequence for the first race. There was a sort of ‘race within a race’ format to the club championship. Each night had a winner – the person who accumulated the most points over the night. This was managed by the venue staff that awarded a trophy to first place. The WRXSA club championship took a different tack. Maximum points (20) were awarded to the fastest lap time of the night, with 19 for second place, 18 for third and so on. It was felt that this system was fairest as we had all felt the pain of working hard to get to first place, then getting spun into the wall by a keen fellow racer who decided to use your kart as their braking aid. This is quickly followed up by having to watch in agonizing frustration as all other karts lap you again and again, while the kart attendant is busy chatting up a pretty bystander and hasn’t noticed you’re face first into the tyre wall. Of course, hire karts are a lottery at best. Some days you’ll have a kart that flies past other racers who can do nought but wave their fists at you as you zigzag through the field, and other days you’ll wonder if they’ve mistakenly filled your tank with baby oil, and fitted those spare tyres they found propping open the door of the workshop. To quote Forest Gump, you never know what you’re gonna get.

The final round, held out at Richmond, was a different format. It’s was a team-based event, with double points on offer for each driver. This event is a fave amongst the WRXSA crew, due to being one of the few formats with hot driver changes. And by hot I mean mildly tepid, as no regular human being can climb in and out of hire karts with anything approaching speed. But it’s entertaining to say the least watching everyone scramble for seat belts, hand holds, and occasionally jumping out of the wrong side of the kart into oncoming traffic. All in the name of saving those precious 10ths of a second - while minutes seem to go by trying to find that damn seat belt buckle you just dropped. Round 1 – Pooraka. These felt like the quickest of the karts in Adelaide, and with a nice outdoor track was a popular event thoroughly enjoyed by all attending members. This night was made all the more spicy by having to swap karts depending on your position (which may have been decided by laps completed?). So for some laps you got a fast kart, and for others you got something created at a junkyard challenge. I was lucky enough to get the former, and managed to scrape into first for this night after an unlucky Hugh got spun and left stranded! It’s amazing how much pain can be seen through the small gap in a full face helmet. Round 2- Gepps Cross. A mixed up track with an extremely tight indoor section and an open outdoor section. This night was made all the more interesting by a drizzling rain outside, which mixed rather well with the smooth painted concrete and wet, slick tyres. I’ve never had so much opposite lock in a kart before! Great fun was had by all with some fierce competition. Big shout out to Gary, Zoe and Jason for spectating and being official photographers for the night! Hugh took top honours in this round after defending first place for virtually the entire event – a great drive indeed.

Round 2- Gepps Cross. A mixed up track with an extremely tight indoor section and an open outdoor section. Big shout out to Gary, Zoe and Jason for spectating and being official photographers for the night! Hugh took top honours in this round after defending first place for virtually the entire event – a great drive indeed. Round 3- Richmond. This was the standard grand prix format and probably had the widest margins of kart standards of all the venues we hired. Some karts were screamers setting times worthy of the “Months fastest times” board. And of course there was the other end of the spectrum. I wonder if they have a slowest time board? Nigel took a hard earned win on this occasion, holding onto first place from several contenders. I’ll never forget watching that orange helmet bobbing above the tyre wall. Round 4- the Finale, the Enduro. Teams were decided by names being randomly pulled from a virtual hat (thank you app store) to ensure parity across the field. This made for some fun times when drivers are matched with drivers with about 8 inches difference in

height. Even my baby booster seat couldn’t save me from Jacob’s reclined driving position. This event was special not only for the aforementioned ‘hot’ driver changes, but by mixing up slow and quick karts with slow and quick drivers. Many places were made up only to be lost by the time the drivers changed. Some karts suited one driver but not the other which made for all sorts of randomness. In the end there was only 0.001 seconds difference in the fastest lap time set for the night! James and Daymow took out the win surprising everybody – Brad and Alin seemed to be battling it out with Nigel and Michael, all the while James and Daymow were silently running away with the win. After four rounds of exciting wheel to wheel racing with only some (cough) rubbing/bumping, the results ended up as per the following table. Thanks to all who managed to make it out to the nights, it was always fun! And thanks to Seth for organising the finale and especially Brendo for conceiving the event. It was difficult predicting the number of drivers that the kart centres always seemed to want locked in, but we always got a good race in the end.

Subaru Driver David Higgins Completes Perfect Undefeated Season with Victory at Lake Superior Performance Rally! Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins and codriver Craig Drew capped an extraordinary season by winning the 2015 Lake Superior Performance Rally to complete the first undefeated ‘perfect season’ in U.S. rallying since 1987. Higgins and Drew were unflappable for the eighth straight rally, winning all but two of the event’s 15 competition stages at the wheel of their 2015 Subaru WRX STI prepared by Vermont SportsCar. The win officially netted Higgins fifth straight Driver’s Title in the Rally America National Championship.

“The team’s result this season is simply impressive,” stated Rob Weir, Subaru Motorsports Marketing Manager. “They began the season with an all-new rally car, and despite adversity from the competition, mechanical setbacks, and Mother Nature, were able to claim the top of the podium at every round. We couldn’t ask for more from Higgins, Drew, and the entire staff at Vermont SportsCar this season.” Story by Subaru of America Photos by Lars Gange courtesy of Subaru of America

"It was hell of a long weekend," Higgins said, at the podium celebration. "It is amazing to do what we have done, but you can only do it with a great team that we have. Craig (Drew) has been awesome as always and we have been on a good winning streak for a long time, but this one was special. Stages were in good condition and for us the big task was to bring it home.” The last perfect undefeated season in U.S. rallying was achieved 28 years ago by John Buffum, an 11-time national champion. Buffum is now the Team Manager for Subaru Rally Team USA and was on hand to help celebrate with Higgins on Saturday. On the challenge of achieving a perfect season Buffum commented; “It takes not only a skilled driver and navigator, but a reliable car. It also takes a great team. All of those things came together for David and Craig this year and it is cool to see it and be part of it.”

I knew of this event but didn't know much about it. It was on my "motorsport bucket list" but I wasn't expecting to tick it off in my second year of racing. A friend of mine and fellow Driven sponsored driver Brodie Huppatz suggested I enter.... He then hassled me every week or so for a month after entries opened. I did some sums, called in some favours and together with Zoe we decided we could afford it.... if we slept in a tent. It was the first time I've ever towed a car, it had its challenges, especially when the trailer I borrowed wasn't exactly built to tow a car. My friend was kind and foolish enough to lend me his VE SS ute in exchange for duck duck (Zoes gc8). The drive down went quick enough, scrutineering was organized and painless and our accommodation was exactly what we paid for... a patch of grass and a power point to charge our phones. So far so good but things where only going to get better. I had no idea what to except. I'd watched half a dozen YouTube clips in preparation but that was it. My mind was blown when I first saw the track. Even the pits where enough to get the racer in me excited. We were in the crater of an extinct volcano covered in beautiful forest, next to a lake and our job for the next 2 days was to see who could race out of it the fastest. No wonder this event was on my bucket list as it should be for all racing enthusiasts.

The track is comprised of a tight technical section at the start. This opens up to a series of big sweepers which reward bravery and cars with grip. Then a gymkhana style hairpin and a quick dash around a couple more bends to the finish. As far as hillclimb tracks go this is as good as SA has to offer. It was nice have a couple of fellow WRXSA members there to share the fun with. Damian Brand is a veteran when it comes to legends and he was more than happy to share his advice on how best to tackle the course. Tania Langcake was also there and as usual she couldn't wipe the smile off her face.

Day 1 of racing had its ups and downs. I was driving well and posting some good times but on the last run for the day my concentration lapsed... I thought I had one more corner before the hairpin entrance. This resulted in me coming in way too hot. A quick decision to abandon the corner and continue straight on was made but not quick enough. I collected a tyre stack with my front bar. Luckily it was only cosmetic damage and could have been a lot worse.

A few celebratory beers, a great meal with friends and a safe trip back home capped off a great weekend of motorsport. I highly recommend this event. If you are even remotely interested in giving it a go, do it. You will have no regrets.

Many thanks once again to the officials and volunteers. To Driven motorsport, Yaruki Road, Eastwood Engine Developments and S&J for all their help getting the Goose to where it is now. Lastly Day 2 of racing saw me slowly regain my confidence. I thanks to Zoe for the endless encouragement and had a goal in mind but it wasn't until the last run in ongoing support. the top 40 shoot out that I achieved the time I knew the car was capable of. A 56.63 was good enough for Jason Bartsch 15th outright. Considering it was my first time there and a strong field of around 130 cars I was over the moon with the results. It also won me a bet which means Brodie now has to wash the Goose... in a dress.

Subaru Driver David Higgins Honours Colin McRae with top run at Rally GB. Seven-time Rally America Champion David Higgins with co-driver Craig Drew capped a very special tribute race with a dominating performance at Wales Rally GB by winning their class by over five minutes, and finishing in the top twenty in a field of the world’s best rally teams. With support from Subaru, Higgins and Drew entered Wales Rally GB in a WRX STI that wore a livery inspired by the late Colin McRae’s 1995 win of the WRC Manufacturer’s title for Subaru.

Subaru Rally Team USA technical partner Vermont Sports Car planned to enter Higgins’ Rally America championship winning 2015 WRX STI, but found it’s specifications were too far out of regulation for Rally GB and there wasn’t enough time to modify the car after the final Rally America Championship round.

“Our goal for this event was to pay tribute to Colin and our great history in rallying; while also thanking David and Craig for their flawless 2015 season in Rally America,” stated Motorsports Marketing Manager Rob Weir. “The icing on the cake was the great result they achieved, especially considering the conditions at Rally GB this year.”

Subaru was able to source an NR4 spec 2015 WRX STI from JRM for the task. “We’re thankful that JRM was able to produce this car for us in short order,” stated Weir. “The NR4 spec car is very close to a stock WRX STI, and really showed to the production car’s rally capability out of the box. I can’t think of many other production cars that could perform so well in rally in this form.”

“Our Subaru ran great and the team did an amazing job pulling this project together for us,” stated David Higgins. “The weather conditions were very challenging, but the response from the crowd on stage kept us pushing hard.”

Willunga was the final event on the WRXSA club championship Calendar. With only 120 entries and 15 of those being club members it was clear to see our club loves this event. Conditions were perfect. The sun was out early heating up the track. The event got off to a slow start with some cars not making it all the way to the top. I got a bit nervous thinking maybe something was off with the track surface. I almost reached down and put the Goose back into Low boost. But with all times counted and tallying up to an accrued time, low boost wasn't an option. We had 4 runs over the day with plenty of time in-between to spectate, socialize with other drivers and enjoy the local coffee and bakery. What more could you want? This was the first motorsport event of mine that my Old Man has come to watch. He brought my little sister and 2 nephews with him. I was so excited to have them all there and couldn't help but feel a sense of "hey Dad... look what I can do". The Goose seemed to be a bit down on horse power, most likely due to the heat of the day but that didn't stop it from getting results. I posted the fastest individual run of any Subaru on the day. Finished 1st in 3500cc and over AWD Class and 13th overall. What a great way to finish off the club championship. Jason Bartsch

I drove and went ok. Wish I pushed harder but was scared from the 1st session of binning it. The event went pretty smooth after that though and was happy with the timing being posted relatively quickly. Props to Bartsch for his finish position, jarred for putting his balls out and driving to the limit and bad luck to Seth for finally dropping a motor.

The first run of the day was fuelled by trepidation, 4 cars hit the barrier before my first run and I was only half way up the run list. In the very long line up, both car and driver were getting annoyingly hot, and every opportunity to line up in the tiny shade of a roadside tree was excruciatingly valuable. When I finally got to the start line I was desperately trying to remember what the road was like. Two weeks earlier I had driven up and down the hill for the first time, in my wife’s car, with a sleeping child in the back, far from optimal practise.

Aaaaaand then I stuffed the launch. My old girl’s not overly endowed with power, and combined with a hot road, semi slick tyres and an extremely nervous driver, it made for a boggy launch. Never mind, the first run was never going to be fast.

Up through the gears for a bit until the first braking point, I didn’t get any higher than 3rd, and after a quick brake, lift off and then back on the power I think I got to around 150-160 km/h. Funny how, at twice my legal recce speed, the road seemed entirely different. But what a road! Fast sweepers, double And wouldn’t you know it, that’s when I got stuck; apexes, and some quick left/right/left corners made right on the start line as a halt was called due to for a brilliant drive. Thank you to all who came out for the day and enjoyed themselves. The dyno day was a success even with the small amount of cars entered. Cheers Nigel for cooking up bacon and eggs for breakfast and making sure everyone was well fed. Was great heading to the Classic Adelaide stages after for a bit of high speed action to top off the day. Also great to see a few of the new members out and about enjoying the sun with us all. TYREPOWER JOINS TYRE CLEAN-UP SCHEME Largest independent tyre retail chain joins Tyre Stewardship Australia Addressing the challenge of 48 million end-of–life tyres per year Ensuring sustainability, helping to turn waste tyres into new jobs and industries Australia’ largest independent tyre retail chain, Tyrepower, has put its national network behind Tyre Stewardship Australia as part of an industry wide push to address an up to 48 million old tyres per year challenge. With over 250 independent stores operating under the Tyrepower banner, the retail group’s participation in the newly established Tyre Stewardship Scheme adds further momentum to the support for the initiative, which includes backing from tyre manufacturers covering over 60% of the Australian tyre market. Established in 1977, the Tyrepower Group is now one of the primary tyre retailing channels in Australia and New Zealand. It joins tyre manufacturers, such as Continental, Goodyear, Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and Yokohama and their retail outlets, in signing on to the Tyre Stewardship Scheme. Together they aim to turn end-of-life tyres into a valuable feedstock for new products that generate new ‘green jobs’, establish transparent and sustainable management of recycling and deliver industry education, research and development. Tyrepower Chief Executive Officer, David Wilson, enthusiastically committed the group to the stewardship scheme, which is endorsed by ACCC and supported by State and Federal governments. “Tyrepower is a responsible corporate citizen and we are taking the high ground on this issue,” he said. “We want to ensure all dealers are using approved recyclers and engaging in sustainable behaviour. Together we will start to clean up the problem the nation is facing”. The Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme came into effect on 1st

August, having been launched earlier in the year by the Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, to address the growing issue of the stockpile of end-of-life tyres and the attendant environmental and community concerns. TSA Chairman Gerry Morvell welcomed the membership of Tyrepower and its commitment to addressing the problem. “Tyrepower is one of Australasia’s biggest and most respected tyre retailers and I believe its commitment to the Tyre Stewardship Scheme complements the company’s position in the community,” he said. “Their participation in the Scheme will not only help address the physical management of the end-of- life tyres, but will also play a major role in gaining public recognition and support for the Scheme. “We know that Australians prefer to do the ‘right thing’ for the environment and by joining the Scheme, Australian tyre businesses are meeting that consumer expectation”. Tyre Stewardship Australia is an industry initiative led by major tyre manufacturers including and backed by the Australian Motor Industry Federation, the Minerals Council of Australia with the support of Federal and State/Territory Governments. The Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme has three core objectives: education of industry and consumers; research and development focussed on new uses for the recycled raw materials; and independent auditing designed to eradicate dirty, unsafe and illegal practices. It will be funded through a levy of 25 cents per new tyre sold in Australia. The Scheme will recognise sustainable end-of-life tyre management through an accreditation and auditing system. Consumers will be able to identify participants in the Scheme through TSA signage at retail outlets and by visiting the TSA website. Details of the Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme and the opportunity for relevant companies to register their interest in participating can be found on the TSA website at www.tyrestewardship.org.au
