2015 SA Time Attack

The 2015 SA Time Attack was something a bit different in that it was structured as a Day / Night event, meaning that it started just after lunch and continued all the way till 10pm. This was a big draw for me as racing under lights is something I had never done before and considering it was a 40 odd degree day it was a good alternative to racing during the heat of the day.

Maybe it was just because I was already braking and it was obvious fairly quickly that I was not going to pull up in time, but it was quite a simple case of ensuring that I went straight off and did not try to make it around the corner. On two of the three times I pulled up enough to not need to go into the sand trap, meaning I could just get back on the track straight away no worries at all; the third was a bit more exciting in that the brakes were fading in a serious way It was also a good draw for spectators for the same and I went straight into the sand. Again it was still very reason and plenty of the WRXSA family made the trip controlled, I went straight in and the bogginess of the out to Mallala to cheer on the competitors. Racing in sand was no match for the Subaru AWD! I just went the afternoon was a good opportunity to re-familiarise straight across around the back of the trap and remyself with the track, experimenting with braking entered the track. points and driving lines. Then once the sun went down and the lights were switched on the atmosphere This just goes to show once more that if want to find changed drastically. your cars limits the track is the place to do it! The lighting around the track was quite good, there Some good lap times were set with David Kim being were no real dark spots but even so the sense of speed the fastest club member on the day: did change compared to racing during the day, David Kim: 1:17.72 meaning you had to watch your braking points in Jason Bartsch: 1:19.08 particular. This time out braking points were Jon Langham: 1:19.43 something I was pushing quite a bit and this resulted in Seth Coultas: 1:23.92 overshooting a corner on 3 occasions. Coming off the Isaac Shevchenko: 1:23.98 track was not something I have done before so it was a Simon Goodwin 1:24.06 bit of a new experience, but it was not as bad as I Nick Galliford: 1:26.46 thought it might be! Damian McGinn 1:31.62 Seth Coultas

Subaru Rumour Mill Car and Driver (caranddriver.com) recently speculated that Subaru have been testing an experimental prototype with a midmounted turbocharged boxer engine driving the rear wheels, and two electric motors powering the front wheels. Their source (apparently close to Subaru) stated that Subaru have been testing this setup in a modified BRZ; but it is unknown if this testing could result in a new two-door AWD sports coupe or something a bit more mundane. The idea of hybrid petrol / electric drivetrain is not completely new, Subaru have already got their Viziv Concept SUV that puts a petrol engine in the front and an electric motor in the back. Sadly a short time later the rumour was squashed by Tom Doll (Subaru of America’s president and COO), who noted that it would be prohibitively expensive to develop a sports car like that.

This is a completely un-official artists rendering of what a new mid-engine coupe could have looked like taken from the March edition of Japanese magazine Holiday Auto.

WRXSA Tour de Hillclimb The WRXSA Tour de Hillclimb was a fresh new route to add to the already expansive cruise layouts. It had club members meeting at Windy Point on a Saturday morning for a quick chat and catch up before setting out on a tour of the three hillclimb locations down south. First up we headed down through Blackwood and Clarendon to find our way to Wickhams Hill where we wound our way to the top of the hill to the sound of boxer rumble. From here, the cruise headed through the hills to McLaren Vale and had us at our second location, the popular Old Willinga Hill where we twisted our way up the wide, fast paced hill which also is host to the Tour Down Under. A quick stop at the top of the hill for a regroup, stretch of the legs and a farewell to a couple of members and it was off to our final location and the best one yet, Mt. Alma where members got in a sneaky practice (slow paced) run before the event in April and a look at the amazing view from the top of the hill. From here it was back to Willunga for a feed and a well earned beverage before home time. All up an amazing teaser of what hillclimbs fellow WRXSA members race on throughout the year and a chance to attract more entries for events. Brad Halliday

WRXSA’s first social event for the year was held on Sunday 13th of March, at Barossa Bowland. It was a perfect day for some friendly competition, especially with the boys competing against each other to see who could send their ball down the lane the quickest! There were many different bowling styles to be seen, one in particular which worked quite well for Stella, which was to bowl the ball down backwards, which proved to work a lot better than the conventional way! Up next was 18 holes of mini golf, we only had the one ‘Hole in One’ for the day and that went to little Mia who wasn’t shy to ask us each hole if we had got one yet! Zoe Rule Mini Golf

Round 1 2016 S&J Automotive Club Championship: Mallala Sprint

John Schaefer had some “overheating issues”.

First event back since spending 3 months repairing the body damaged caused at Eden Valley hillclimb. I drove fairly tentatively but managed to remain competitive. It was great to get back on the track and I was very happy with 25th overall. My goal was to just enjoy myself and drive an unbent and unbroken car home. The highlight was definitely the overnight camp with great mates and fellow club members. Jason Bartsch

Was great to catch up with everyone again. Alma is a fast and dangerous track which rewards the brave. Being my first time here I had no expectations but I managed to reach my target time and finished in the top 10! Damien Brand

Had a great weekend driving and catching up with friends, it's a fast event which is getting faster each year. Drove conservatively for consistent results to position 9th overall. Tasman Orme

An exciting and nervous event for me running a new car and my first time running semi slicks. After figuring out where I was loosing speed on the first 2 runs I went into run 3 feeling good past turn 2. Felt quick thru the chicane but unfortunately broke 2nd gear on the exit of the chicane. A sad an unexpected finish to my race. A great bunch of people to hang out with in the evening and great to be part of the car club and racing community again. Ben Wilden

The Mount Alma Mile is best described as thrilling, fast, terrifying and challenging all rolled into one. Richard Paul

Was the first time up in the Driven Motorsport Evo X. The car felt strong and planted...but not planted enough for road tyres after cracking the 47 sec barrier. The track conditions and professionalism of the officials, contractors and event as a whole unfortunately wasn't worth the 9k damage. Jon Langhan

Worth the tow trip home. Brendan Moore

Subaru joins the British Touring Car Championship with Team BMR

Colin Turkington DOB: 21 March 1982 – BTCC Debut: 2002 With consistent wins (36) and regular podium finishes Colin Turkington also holds two BTCC titles from 2009 and 2014.

Not content to just stick to the tried and true rally heritage, Subaru continues to spread it’s motorsport roots signing a 3 year deal with Team BMR to run 4 Subaru Levorg’s in the 2016 BTCC. While the road going cars are AWD the race cars will be modified to RWD in order to conform to the Championships rules. This is the first time that a Subaru has competed in the BTCC, and while Team BRM are also quite new they have signed on two very Jason Plato experienced drivers; Jason Plato & Colin Turkington. These two British DOB: 14 Oct 1967 – BTCC Debut: 1997 drivers have been competing in the BTCC for 19 and 14 years With 94 British Touring Car Championship race respectively, and between them that have completed 789 BTCC races, wins to his name, Jason Plato has won more and won 130 of them! They also hold 4 driver titles, so the new Levorg races than any other driver in the history of Sports Tourers will be in safe hands. Two newer drivers have also been the BTCC! He won his first title in 2001 and then another in 2010. signed making the team one of the largest on the grid. Team BRM with the support of Subaru Global will develop the new cars four cylinder boxer engine to full BTCC specification. Team BRM acknowledge that developing the engine from scratch will be a big challenge but aim to focus on getting the basics right early on, and then develop it further over the next three years. Two races into the 2016 Championship and the team has faced some challenges. As is to be expected a variety of issues have resulted in some DNF’s including James Cole’s car dramatically catching fire in Round 2 (a result of a fuel ancillary system failure), thankfully he was able to exit the car without injury. Meanwhile it appears that Colin Turkington has certainly come to grips with his new car, breaking into the Top 10 at Donington Park and is currently sitting in 17th place in the Driver Championship.

James Cole DOB: 16 Aug 1988 – BTCC Debut: 2013 As a relatively new driver to the series James shows plenty of potential, he has competed in 63 races and was able to break into the top 10 at Silverstone last year.

Warren Scott DOB: 28 Sep 1971 – BTCC Debut: 2013 Warren comes from a British Superbike background and founded the BMR team in 2013. Now the boss of one of the biggest teams on the grid he remains both at the helm and behind the wheel.

RETURN OF THE GOOSE!

I was on track to finish off an amazing year of motorsport. It was my second season and things were going better than I could have ever hoped for. A couple of class wins and some very respectable outright placings. The Goose was on song too. With most of the little creases ironed out during the season the car was feeling fantastic. Until this happened.

So what went wrong? I have no shame in admitting that this was driver error. If you are going to push yourself as a driver, sooner or later you are going to make a mistake. Some mistakes are more costly than others. I wasn't familiar enough with the course. We did a sighting lap but there was just too much to remember. I came into a left hander with too much pace. It tightened way more than I was expecting. I turned in as best I could but there was nothing more I could do. I hit the brakes hard to reduce as much speed as possible before impact. Lucky it was just a glancing blow along the guard rail. It totalled the entire driver’s side of the car. From headlight to taillight. I remember trying to call my partner Zoe to tell her I was ok. I knew she was on the start line watching and I didn’t want her to think I was hurt. This is the downside of motorsport but it’s the reality. Every one of us that races knows the risks but we all agree the rewards outweigh them 10 fold.

It was the last race of the season. The inaugural Eden Valley Hillclimb put on by the Autocorsa Group. A spectacular fast flowing section of road just outside Sedan. Also the longest Hillclimb South Australia has on offer.

For two days I couldn't bring myself to go downstairs and look at the car. But I had to put the emotions aside and set about fixing the car. As with all of us with a motorsport addiction money is always tight. I simply couldn't afford to send it off to a crash repairer. All the work was going to be done in my single car space allotted to my apartment.

Once I had assessed the damage and to my surprise there was no major structural damage. The first step was to order new parts. Thanks to Megan from Yaruki road, S&J, SSM Performance parts and Jarvis Subaru (Jacob Richards). Also special thanks to Dylan Butler for donating his doors of his wreck.

Most of the repair was pretty straight forward. The rear quarter was going to be the biggest challenge. It was going to be too expensive to replace, so I decided to bash it as straight as possible and bog it up. So after a few tutorial videos on YouTube and a trip to supercheap I was ready to try my hand at panel beating. To most people bog is a dirty word. But if you do it properly it is a great product to use. I found the key is patience. Lots of patience. I spent days sanding and sculpting the rear. One thing that I was aware of from the start was I wasn't going to get the rear wheel arch looking 100%. The simple solution was to go widebody flares. The bolt on variety look ok but I just loved the body moulded ABW flares. The flares turned into a much bigger and more difficult job than I had imagined. First of all I had no idea how to attach them. The internet wasn't much help either. A combination of homemade brackets, bog and fiberglass was the solution.

It was at this point where I was running low on motivation. I was so close but the final stages where attention to detail is so crucial. The last 10% is always the hardest. A friend of mine convinced me to take it for a drive to get my motivation back. Seeing it in the light of day made me so proud and certainly recharged my motivation. But, there was a problem. Just when I was so close to finished I decided I wasn't happy with the way the rear flares looked. Compared to the very aggressive front, the back look a bit lame. After some technical advice from fellow member Brendan Moore I decided to beef up the rears. I used shaping foam and more bog to bring the flares out by about 10mm. Then sanded to shape. Then I tried my hand at fibre glassing. This is an art that I very much underestimated. But with persistence and more advice from Brendo I eventually had flares that would be strong enough to survive and looking exactly how I wanted.

By this stage I had received my third letter from Strata telling me to cease works on my car and to have no material or tools in my car space. This area is for cars to park only. But I wasn't going to stop now. Not when I was this close. I got put onto a young painter willing to do a cash job. His attitude and eagerness made my decision easy. I couldn't believe the turnaround time either. Not even a full week and all after hours. Many thanks to Corey Edwards.

Goose has never looked better. I was so excited that I actually drove it out booth! It was still warm. The addition of a gloss black roof and 20mm bolt on spacers had the goose looking better than I ever could imagine. Jason Bartsch

Can Subaru bring the magic back to the ARC?

In the past Subaru Australia noted that it would only return to the Australian Rally Championship if they would be able to fight for outright honours as in recent years only 2WD cars were eligible and AWD vehicles were relegated to a secondary AWD Championship. Well, late last year the ARC announced that along with a change of Chairman to David Waldon; they would do just that, moving back to allowing 4WD vehicles to compete in the main championship.

Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to secure Molly as our driver and Subaru Ambassador. She’s got a wonderful attitude, has worked really hard for the opportunity and she’s a glass half-full person, never the victim. Then, of course, her performances both here and internationally have been very strong, reinforced by the fact she is the world’s top-ranked female rally driver.

In February Subaru Australia announced that true to their word they would be returning to contest the 2016 ARC Championship. After a 10 year break Subaru will be returning with a 2016 WRX STI NR4 prepared by Les Walkden Rallying and driven by Molly Taylor. Last year Molly came second overall in the ARC and had rallying in her blood; mother Coral is a four time Australian Rally Champion co-driver and father Mark ran a rally school.

Mr Senior added: “The rekindling of our partnership with Les Walkden is very pleasing. They are highly successful and have a great record with Group N production vehicles. We are going to be very realistic with our expectations. The current regulations are very loose and free – you could virtually build anything, but we have chosen a showroom stock Group N production Subaru. “We really want our motorsport philosophy to be ‘run on Sunday, buy on Monday.’ It will also be a learning curve for Molly, coming into a bigger, heavier car than the lightweight machines she’s previously been running. She’s a perfect fit for the Subaru brand as we move to attract new customers, particularly younger ones.”

Molly who has been driving competitively since 2006 was also recently awarded the Peter Brock Medal for demonstrating outstanding ability, sportsman-like attitude along with a willingness and capacity to promote the sport to the wider community; just like Brocky.

Molly looking forward to the challenge said: “This is a fantastic opportunity and I’m both humbled and excited to be part of Subaru’s new plans to build on their amazing rally heritage in Australia. We’ve got a lot of work to do in testing before the first round in April, but the NR4 is a great car and we look forward to seeing the return of the Subaru rally fans, both new and old.” After testing in Tasmania the team will head over the WA for their debut at the Quit Forest Rally on the 2224th of April. Will Subaru have what it takes to pick up where they left off; or will the 10 year break mean that the championship winning formula has been lost? Regardless of the answer we can all look forward to some exciting Subaru Rally action, and that makes me very happy!

Molly testing the new Subaru over Easter in Tasmania

UPDATE: Molly Taylor and codriver Bill Hayes achieved a very respectable 4th place in the Quit Forest Rally with out right honours going to Simon Evans & Ben Searcy in their GC8 STI Seth Coultas

Brothers in arms!

The WRXSA/MGEC Cruise was something a bit different to add to the mix, putting the boxer rumble up against the sweet sound of the Evos. The cruise meet point up at McElligotts Reserve overlooked Adelaide and provided the perfect backdrop to the jam packed Subaru and Mitsubishi filled car park which gave members of both car clubs the chance to mingle and share some friendly banter between clubs before venturing off into the hills for a nice Easter Sunday boost.

warmed up and drivers woke up. From here it was off down Greenhill Road and through the winding hills of Adelaide in convoy with both clubs acting quite nicely together despite the rivalries between makes. After playing in hills for a couple of hours and not a drop of rain to be seen, we arrived at the end destination at Grumpy’s Brewhaus for a wind down and a pizza to end a perfect Easter Sunday.

The cruise slowly wound its way up through Belair and A thank you to all who came along and enjoyed Easter Upper Sturt to the first meet point at Mt. Lofty where Sunday in style. Brad Halliday a short stop off and catch up was had while the cars

50th Anniversary of the Subaru “Boxer” Engine

On May the 14th 2016 Subaru celebrates the 50th anniversary of its “Boxer” engine. Subaru’s signature Boxer engine was introduced on the Subaru 1000 compact passenger car on May 14, 1966.

Under the “Confidence in Motion” brand statement, Subaru will continue to enhance its engineering excellence and distinctive appeal to offer an “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” driving experience to customers worldwide.

Since then, Subaru has refined and maximized the advantages of its Boxer engines and continuously enhanced them to power its vehicles. Today, every vehicle sold by Subaru is fitted with a Boxer engine and its total production over the past 50 years tops 16 million units. In a horizontally-opposed design of the Boxer engine, the pistons face each other in a side-to-side symmetrical layout. The opposing pistons work to cancel out the inertia force of each other, resulting in less vibration and superb rotational balance which provide a smooth feel right up to the high rev range. The Subaru 1000 Sedan was the first use of the Subaru Boxer Engine, boasting 40kw of power.

The Boxer engine is one of the key components that comprise Subaru’s distinctive Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. Subaru Symmetrical AWD offers a combination of superior stability and traction intrinsic to AWD and balanced distribution of weight provided by the symmetrically-laid-out drivetrain with a longitudinally-mounted Boxer engine positioned in line with it; the synergy delivers excellent performance such as stability at high speeds and brisk cornering. The current STi now has 221kw and 407Nm of torque.

“CLASSIC”

Celebrating Over 15 years of Rex Driver! Summer 2000

Look Who’s Torqueing

When the club was originally being formed in January 1999 the question of CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sports) Affiliation was raised. At the time it was decided not to proceed down this path for several reasons. These reasons included the cost, which is about $500 per year, and also we were unsure exactly how many members, if any were interested in competition type events. Basically in Australia if you are not a member of a CAMS Affiliated Club and do not have a CAMS license you can not compete in any official Motorsport. Jump forward to December 2000, as the club approaches 2 years as an entity and with some 70 members, it was felt the time was right for the Club to make this step, and seek CAMS Affiliation. This will open up a world of participating in Motor Sport to our Club Members. Sounds interesting, but you are not too keen on the idea of selling the house to buy a race car? The intent here is that members can use their every day car, in fun and fair spirited friendly competition. I am not talking about one on one, door handle to door handle racing, but single car timed events such as Super Sprints or Hill Climbs, where the chance of damage to the Rex is very small. It is interesting to note that the Victorian WRX Club conducts its own club championship, which consists of a series of tarmac competition events. Those participating collect points for finishing in the top places at each round, at the end of each year points are totalled to give a Club Champion.

Now some of you may be thinking this sounds fine, but how would someone in a standard Rex, on a family budget compete with those driving a STi or a heavily modified WRX? In an attempt to open up the competition to all, the Victorian Club has come up with 4 different classes where drivers compete against those with similarly modified cars. The classes range from Standard Class in which the vehicles must be factory standard with only very minor modifications allowed to early WRX’s to bring them to an equal footing with 00MY cars in terms of brakes, wheels and seating. There is also a modified Class, Super Modified Class and Open Class (where anything goes). So the long and short of this is that anyone who wants to have some fun in their car, can compete on an equal footing. Currently I am gathering information, ideas and accessing the feasibility of us establishing our own Club Champion series here in SA. If this sounds like something you would like to be involved in, contact myself. The more ideas and input we have, the better such a series could be. Until next time, Safe Rexing.

Sean Jenner

TYREPOWER JOINS TYRE CLEAN-UP SCHEME Largest independent tyre retail chain joins Tyre Stewardship Australia Addressing the challenge of 48 million end-of–life tyres per year Ensuring sustainability, helping to turn waste tyres into new jobs and industries Australia’ largest independent tyre retail chain, Tyrepower, has put its national network behind Tyre Stewardship Australia as part of an industry wide push to address an up to 48 million old tyres per year challenge. With over 250 independent stores operating under the Tyrepower banner, the retail group’s participation in the newly established Tyre Stewardship Scheme adds further momentum to the support for the initiative, which includes backing from tyre manufacturers covering over 60% of the Australian tyre market. Established in 1977, the Tyrepower Group is now one of the primary tyre retailing channels in Australia and New Zealand. It joins tyre manufacturers, such as Continental, Goodyear, Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and Yokohama and their retail outlets, in signing on to the Tyre Stewardship Scheme. Together they aim to turn end-of-life tyres into a valuable feedstock for new products that generate new ‘green jobs’, establish transparent and sustainable management of recycling and deliver industry education, research and development. Tyrepower Chief Executive Officer, David Wilson, enthusiastically committed the group to the stewardship scheme, which is endorsed by ACCC and supported by State and Federal governments. “Tyrepower is a responsible corporate citizen and we are taking the high ground on this issue,” he said. “We want to ensure all dealers are using approved recyclers and engaging in sustainable behaviour. Together we will start to clean up the problem the nation is facing”. The Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme came into effect on 1st

August, having been launched earlier in the year by the Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, to address the growing issue of the stockpile of end-of-life tyres and the attendant environmental and community concerns. TSA Chairman Gerry Morvell welcomed the membership of Tyrepower and its commitment to addressing the problem. “Tyrepower is one of Australasia’s biggest and most respected tyre retailers and I believe its commitment to the Tyre Stewardship Scheme complements the company’s position in the community,” he said. “Their participation in the Scheme will not only help address the physical management of the end-of- life tyres, but will also play a major role in gaining public recognition and support for the Scheme. “We know that Australians prefer to do the ‘right thing’ for the environment and by joining the Scheme, Australian tyre businesses are meeting that consumer expectation”. Tyre Stewardship Australia is an industry initiative led by major tyre manufacturers including and backed by the Australian Motor Industry Federation, the Minerals Council of Australia with the support of Federal and State/Territory Governments. The Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme has three core objectives: education of industry and consumers; research and development focussed on new uses for the recycled raw materials; and independent auditing designed to eradicate dirty, unsafe and illegal practices. It will be funded through a levy of 25 cents per new tyre sold in Australia. The Scheme will recognise sustainable end-of-life tyre management through an accreditation and auditing system. Consumers will be able to identify participants in the Scheme through TSA signage at retail outlets and by visiting the TSA website. Details of the Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme and the opportunity for relevant companies to register their interest in participating can be found on the TSA website at www.tyrestewardship.org.au
