This is a very special edition of Rex Driver that focuses on the amazing event that was SubiNats16. A whole convoy of WRXSA Crew made the trip over to Phillip Island in Victoria to mix it with the best Subies that Australia has to offer. Unfortunately I was unable to make the trip due to a new baby arrival but by all accounts (and we have a few of those, 8 included in these pages!) it was a weekend that everyone will remember for years to come. For those that were stuck in Adelaide watching the weekend unfold via Facebook; there is always next year!
Beside all the great photos and stories from SubiNats16 we have 2 new member profiles (welcome to the club guys!), and a selection of Subi motorsport news from here in SA (thanks Frank!) around the world to keep you up to speed.
As with any social club the more you put in the more you will get out so don’t be afraid to get involved; the committee members are a fun friendly bunch that are more than willing to assist people that want to join in. We all share the same passion and want to make the WRXSA Club the best it can be. If you missed the AGM but still want to get more involved the club has monthly committee meetings on the second Tuesday of every month at the Astor Hotel. Everyone is invited to come along and have a chat, if you don’t let us know, we won’t know what you want!
On a personal note, as I mentioned earlier I have been blessed with my second child and as such the timing of the Rex Driver Magazine has been a little... erratic. Rest assured I will continue in the role of Editor and with the help of everyone will endeavour to deliver a Club Magazine that is unrivalled by any As I write this we have just had the clubs Annual General Meeting, and while some people have taken in the car club scene; but, it may be a little later a step back from the organising roles we have had a arriving than I would like. number of new faces filling in to help out where they can, and you can expect a full welcome article As always I am keen to find out what content you would like to see in the magazine, and if you would in the next edition of Rex Driver. like to submit articles even better! Once again this is the perfect time for all members, Until next time, stay safe and when you see a fellow new or old; to put forward any ideas they have for Subie driver don’t forget to give them a wave! Catch the club. There is plenty to love already but with you all later. Seth Coultas your input we can make this club even better!
Member Profile: Jay ‘Birdy’ Lover of shiny objects… and chicken wings, Jay is a keen tea drinker and the proud owner of his Subaru rumble box, the aptly named ‘Smurfy’. His love for Subaru started with his MY00 ‘Classic’, a royal silver-coloured Impreza WRX. It was a simpler time when young Jay still has no knowledge of the inner workings of a car. It was a love hate relationship from the start - with blood, toil, tears and sweat thrown into the mix. Despite all that, it brought smiles to the heart of man whenever the turbo spools. One can only describe such a feeling to that sugary rush from having one too many candies - you know it’s bad for you, but you just can’t stop.
On an unfortunate Friday the 13th, the car had an untimely death, meeting its maker at the hands of a tow ball. Luckily enough, no humans were harmed, saved a few days of sore neck and a broken heart (both literally and metaphorically). As the old was farewelled, it led onto bigger and better things, as he welcomed ‘Smurfy’ into the family - A handsome, blue-blooded MY05 Impreza WRX STI. It was love at first sight, for him, a car that was just out of reach was suddenly a reality. The car came into ownership with minimal modifications and was cared for by the previous owners.
Keeping a decade-old car in such a mint condition would not have been an easy feat. Whilst motorsport is something that is in stored in the future, it may be a while until he draws up the courage and confidence to do so. Until then, he spends his spare time learning on the inner workings of the car and getting his hands dirty with help from his mates. Why WRXSA you asked, simple - Why not?

Hello! As a new member of WRXSA I would like to formally introduce myself.
Motorsport – I’ve owned a 99 wrx wagon, 04 wrx wagon and now currently have a 05 sti which I have had for about 3 years now. I am the second owner of David Daly, Born and bred in Ireland and moved here this car and it was 100% stock when I got it and have started the mods in the last year or so. I have also just to Australia about 10 years ago. Irish and Aussie started to do some events since joining the club as I citizen now so best of both worlds… have always wanted to but one thing or another got in the way. Why I joined WRXSA? Well cars and anything really with an engine are my life. I've worked as a I have done a few practice sessions at Mallala before Motor Mechanic since I was 18 and still to this day in previous cars but since joining the club I have now earn my living swinging spanners. I've worked on a done Collingrove Hillclimb and of course the amazing wide variety of gear from Porsche 911's to Underground Drill Rigs to Caterpillar 60 tonne Dump Subinats at Phillip island just recently where I got to know a lot more of the WRXSA members and they got Trucks. I got the love of Jap cars when my old man to know me. So it was a great way to get amongst it ran a Japanese engine and gearbox reconditioning mechanical workshop and jap import car yard where I and be active within the club and of course get to worked part time on Saturdays, and any other time I enjoy the best Subaru event you can get your hands on so I would highly recommend it, a must for fellow could while I was growing up while also doing my Subi fans. Looking forward this year to a few more apprenticeship with a European car dealership. Hillclimbs and also SA Time Attack in October so see how we go. Maybe more if I can make it. I quickly fell in love with the very first WRX around the late 90's and since then I was hooked. Jap cars my was thing. Subaru all the way and what better If you see me out and about anywhere come say way to enjoy the Subaru life than to join an awesome hello. If you’re thinking of joining the club, hit me up if you’re unsure of anything just like I did before I group like WRXSA that has cruises, social outings, CAMS affiliation for motorsport and also meet a great joined and before my first proper motorsport event. bunch of people with the same passion and love of Everyone I spoke to was more than friendly and cars as I do at the same time. willing to help/offer advice which is great. That’s the clubs culture that has really stood out to me since joining, which I love.

What an awesome weekend, with a great bunch of friends. The organizers did a fantastic job and I participated in as many events as I could. Race day for me could not have gone much better. I set my fastest time on R specs in the second session. 2.2 seconds faster than last year. This was after completing a driveshaft change between the first and second session. For the fourth session we bolted the slicks on and went another 1.4 seconds faster again. To my surprise this put me 4th outright for the event. Shootouts to the WRXSA team media Flashh and Zoe and also to pit chief Daymow for all his help. We all kept him busy but I'm sure he wouldn't have it any other way. Its always a downer to see some of your mates have mechanical issues but it's great how we all get in and help each other however we can. Looking forward now to catchups now at the next event. Damien Brand
What can you realistically say to convey what an amazing weekend SubiNats 16 was. It's was the ultimate mates weekend combined with the ultimate racing weekend and the ultimate cruise.
Road tripping is great at the best of times but to start off an early Friday morning by meeting up with subis and more subis on trailers was amazing. Driving in convey showing a true force representing SA. Stopping at Subaru Docklands for the SubiNats dyno challenge and skid pan demonstrations was a great experience. A huge workshop that was crazy busy plus a bunch of modified boxers making noise on a dyno was something to behold.
Saturday was in part final prep day.. the caravan park became a workshop.. pad changes and brake bleeds the main task plus an exhaust change and some gearbox checks. All ready to race.
SubiNats also had an early morning cruise and meet at the foreshore where we parked and proudly showed what WRX SA is about.. awesome cars and friendly conversation. Saturday all done and dusted had us heading to bed, a few beers consumed, ready for race day Sunday.
Morning came and we were slightly excited and headed for the track.. first ones there before the gates even opened.. whoops. The weather was near perfect with that brilliant cool turbo air and dry track the PBs really did tumble. Despite some mechanical issues for some members the day finished on a high personally breaking my goal of a sub 2 minute lap in my last session - total joy! Then off to the pub!! All in all the weekend was as good as it gets. Even if you don't want to race your car this club is full of amazing people and I highly recommend getting involved and getting out to events. Just being around this group of fabulous motorsport enthusiasts.. well its kinda infectious! Nigel McGaffin
PI / SubiNats 2016 was the event I'd been waiting for. It's always the highlight of my Motorsport year and this year was no different. With new Tyres and 60 more awkw than last year, to say I was excited and Optimistic about a sub 2 minute time was an understatement. I didn't sleep well Thursday night, excitement levels were high. Friday's early start wasn't coming quick enough. The saying 'the trip is half the fun' is definitely true with the WRXSA crew. Two way radios and a bit of fun banter make the trip go quickly. I enjoyed the extra day of this years event. Saturday morning was finally a chance to have a look at Cowes as a tourist before heading to the meet and greet to check out some of the sweet Subies there. I was proud to see our WRXSA boys there with their cars. They were some of the best for sure. A spin on the Go-karts, which is a replica of the main circuit, along with Damien Brand and Andy Kemmler was great fun with everyone on a fairly level playing field. Congrats to Damien for finishing 3rd and 2nd in his heats. A quiet WRXSA BBQ Saturday evening was enjoyable and just what I needed before Sunday's sprint. I love the PI circuit. It's exciting, fast, & makes you feel a little bit invincible. I made the mistake of watching Hirsti and Brand fly down the straight at upwards of 220kmph. It got My adrenaline pumping so hard I felt physically sick. The stomach settled as always after my first run and I started to concentrate on my Goals. First goal was to beat my PB the second to go sub 2minutes. The PB came on my third run of the day and I was feeling very positive. Unfortunately I wasn't to have any further opportunity. During my fourth run I noticed I was having trouble getting the power down. I managed 210kmph down the main straight and around the next 2 corners and that was it, rolling to a stop Bandit's engine had given up. A tow back to the pits and a quick look from the WRXSA SubiNats mechanic Mr Damien Andersen and a suspected seized bearing was determined the most likely culprit. Despite knowing the inevitable end of my high km stock engine was always looming I was crushed. A evening consisting of a few drinks and laughs with my fellow club members helped to soften the blow a little. Monday morning, loaded up for the trip home, with thoughts of where to from here. Maybe it's finally time for that 207.... All in all, despite the expensive weekend for several of us WRXSA crew it was a fantastic weekend with a fantastic group of people I now consider family. What's better than mates, laughs and Motorsport? Tania Langcake
With next to no track experience, being a relatively new member and still feeling like a bit of a stranger signing up to the Phillip Island trip for me was a mix of nerves and excitement. I have always wanted the opportunity to try out my car on a race circuit, yet didn't really know what to expect or how the car would take it. Having little mechanical knowledge I prepped my car as best as I could. Checked fluids, changed the oil, installed a fire extinguisher and then finally the best part applied race stickers! After a short stop in Melbourne at the Subaru Docklands showroom we arrived at Cowes around dinner time. Everyone was feeling exhausted from the long 10 hour journey but in good spirits with excitement building for Sundays racing. Saturday morning most of us enjoyed the well earned sleep in but Dave was keen to hit the track early with his sweet Subie rumble echoing through the caravan park around 6:30am. Although the other park residents may not agree, for me it wasn’t the worst sound to wake up to and only made me more excited for what was to come. Later that morning a few of us checked out some of Australia's best Subaru's on display at the Cowes jetty carpark before heading to the track to cheer on Dave at the Saturday practice session. Watching the cars hitting 200+km/hr down the main straight sent shivers down my spine and made me realise this was the real deal. Driving a close to a stock WRX and not knowing what to expect from my car in these conditions the boys advised me that I should replace my brake pads and fluid before heading out Sunday to ensure I got the most out of the day and my car. Thankfully S&J had provided us with a goody basket of spares with pads and fluid ready to go so we headed back to the caravan park where the last minute race prep began. This is where I realised this club is not just a club but a family. In next to no time everyone had come together to help me out and get the job done and within a hour the car was ready to race. I am extremely grateful for this and especially want to thank Zoe, Jason and Damien for all your help. With new brakes and a car prepped and ready to go come Sunday I exceeded all my expectations. With each session I slowly improved and gained confidence in myself and the car. Despite excessive amounts of tyre squeal and body roll I finished with a personal best of 2:04.63 and snatched 4th position in my class. It was sad to see others having mechanical troubles given they had put in so much effort to making sure I had a good weekend and couldn’t be rewarded with the same personal successes I had. Despite this I think everyone still enjoyed themselves. I feel like I made some new friends and no longer feel like a stranger but part of the family . Matthew Langbrandner

When I first booked this trip I was a bit apprehensive as I was going alone and didn't really know many of the club members but really wanted to go and get involved in the club and obviously being a subi nut true and true it was defo an easy decision. The club/ group were great and I felt at home nearly straight away as they made me feel very welcome from the start. The cruise to Melbourne, the dyno day at Subaru Docklands, practice day on the track for me on the Saturday , bbq and drinks and of course the main event SubiNats on the Sunday was awesome, was such a great weekend all in all. My car performed very well too for 2 full track days and I gave 100% too so it coped a hiding to say the least. I got a 1.59.60 on the Saturday as my best time I then knocked a further 3 seconds off it with a 1.56.47 on the Sundays main event I have to say I was very pleased. I even topped my group in the first session of the day at SubiNats which was a very good feeling also with a 1.57.41. Next time I will have some track tyres but for my first time there I left happy. Felt guilty for the pounding I gave the car so I had to do a track side oil and filter change at the end of the day. I feel for the people who had mechanical dramas , it could have easily been myself too but At least you got some track time anyhow and I'm sure there is bigger and better things to come. Thanks to everyone who was there with WRXSA, driving subi's or not, you guys made the weekend so good and everyone always helped out each other when they could. I also got to know people better and more importantly they got to know me more too as I was new to the club. The line up of quality cars from WRXSA members at SubiNats was second to none also. I think we represented the state and our club very well. We should be proud. This club is more than just a club, its like a family all with the same passion. I love it. Special thanks to Gareth Scanlen who turned into a legend with a few drinks under his belt . Damien Andersen who was the local onsite pit crew for the club that day and also photographers Zoe and flash. .......... And finally to Brad Halliday and Dylan Bulter for updating our times from Adelaide..... And everyone else for making the weekend one to remember.......Till SubiNats 2k17...... Dave Daly
SubiNats 2016. Wow where do I start. With such an emotional roller coaster weeks before PI I had no idea if I was even going to go. Probably because I really wanted to see Damien Brand was the only reason I went. Travelling on the Friday and then the conundrum of it appearing my bedding package I got was some sheets and a towel coupled with our "heater" being a 2 bar jobbie I really was regretting going. Saturday some garage activities started happening in the caravan parks main driveway by us, and I started getting a better feeling for coming. We had a BBQ that night and the feeling was pretty good around camp WRXSA. Sunday morning. I didn't need my 5:30am alarm to go off because I was already awake. But I felt regret, angst, Pain. I really miss my car. This is the 2nd time I had been at PI and my car wasn't. Last year I was rebuilding my 2nd engine. This year though was a different feeling because my car wasn't coming back. It wasn't getting fixed. I'd never drive the car I’d spent the last 3.5 years of my life building. Once seeing everyone loaded in it was amazing. Some really quality made race cars out on display. Groupings were announced and then racing started. After group 1 came in Bartsch said he had some issues with the car getting warm. We set about looking for faults and fixed the problem did all the other pre heat checks and then just as we finished doing that I saw old mate Brand walking to his car with a box and asked if he needed a hand to which he replied maybe. I popped over and it appeared he'd torn a drive shaft boot. We set about getting everything ready to swap the shaft and hope that he'd made the next heat, And we did it with time to spare!! It's like something inside clicked and I was in my element. The rest of the day was spent helping people do bits and pieces to their car or watching a bit of racing. Seeing Bartsch having day ending engine dramas was also emotional. I really felt for him. I know 1st hand how much that can costs. The unknowns. It being a built engine. Being without your car. Not being able to get a full day of racing in. It's the worst! A few more failures happened through out the day. It wasn't a great time in the WRXSA camp. But I'm glad I went. I had such an accomplished feeling at the end of the day. Also a massive thanks to Damien brand for taking me on a passenger lap. Your car is a weapon and I loved the raw feeling of stripped and caged race car!! The 4 wheel slide into the hairpin was pretty cool too haha. Who knows what 2017 has in order. It would be nice to make PI and I hope I can. The itch definitely needs scratching.... Damien Anderson
Back in 2014 when Zoe and I first made the trip to race on Philip Island GP track I was worried it would become an annual thing. 3 years in a row now and each one better than the last. This years trip coincided with SubiNats. An event just 3 years old but gaining a lot of momentum with each year. I really have to hand it to the organising committee. They did an outstanding job not just with the race day but they managed to make an entire weekend of it. I would also like to thank my fellow WRXSA members, as always its the bonding time with like minded people that make this trip so special and unique. Race day and conditions were near perfect. I was blown away way by the calibre of cars ready to take on the circuit. I've never seen so many track dedicated Subaru's in one place before. Then I found out I was in group 1. That's right little old street driven Goose was about to mix it up with the best of them. I was super nervous at this point. But once I got out on the track I realized I might just be able to hold my own. Things were going ok in the first 2 sessions with my times steadily dropping. Then in session 3 disaster struck. Coming around the back straight I noticed a sudden drop in power, followed by a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. I knew straight away my day was finished. With some more investigation required to determine the exact cause it is looking like there is a hole or crack in piston no. 3. I'm sure the guys at Driven and Eastwood engine developments will have the Goose firing away in no time at all. Back better and stronger than before. Jason Bartsch
I had been waiting all year for Phillip Island WRXSA group tour again and being part of the Subaru WRX Nationals was a big excitement for me and my Version 5 STI. It had been a few years since I’ve had a decent run at Phillip Island without a wet track. First Day on the Friday, seeing Docklands Subaru was a bonus as SubiNats had the Dyno Challenge there and WRXSA made the effort and time to drop in and watch and meet some interstate Subaru owners before heading to Cowes Caravan Park later that night. The Saturday was a great relaxing day for the Club. SubiNats had a small meet and greet at the Cowes Jetty Car Park which became like a show and shine with the amount of great Subarus there. I left the STI there for a few hours while I got the chance to do some sightseeing as I never had previous years. Phillip Island has so much to see. A few other members took the SubiNats Go Kart Challenge. The day was finished off with a big group BBQ and nightcap drinks. Sunday was a very early start for us with track preparations before the main event. WRXSA had a great pit setup with garage also with great weather no rain for the day. 100 Subaru WRX’s and other models took to the track with records tumbling in every class! I was in Sprint Class which is about halfway up the ladder. SubiNats ran Street, Clubman, Sprint, Super Sprint and Open. My STI immediately beat my personal best time on the first run and continued to pull faster laps over the day. Not without issues though, from Oil leaks and Shocker dramas, Shifter jamming and Tyres delaminating, somehow I still managed to get faster every lap as I got back up to speed with confidence of the main straight 240km/h and late but light braking to first corner at 170km/h! Although I didn’t achieve a class win I rest my Personal Best by over six seconds with a 1min50 flat. I was shocked to see the STI get such great times against other big kilowatt WRX’s. And knowing I still have much more room to break into the 40’s just makes me want to get back to Phillip Island next year! Damien Hirst

Round 6: Croft (18-19 June) Colin Turkington was fastest in qualifying and followed up with a win in Race #1 and 3rd place in Race #2. Jason Plato qualified 4th fastest and placed 2nd in both races #1 & #2. This meant that in Race#1 it was 1st and 2nd for Subaru; then 2nd & 3rd in Race #2. Round 7: Snetterton (30-31 July) Colin Turkington qualified 2nd fastest, won Race #1 and placed 2nd in Race #2.
Round 8: Knockhill (13-14 August) Jason Plato celebrated his 500th BTCC race with the fastest time in qualifying and lead from start to finish to win Race #1. Colin also made the podium in 3rd place. Jason then followed this up with two more 3rd places in Race #2 & #3.
Round 9: Rockingham (27-28 August) Jason Plato & Colin Turkington managed 3rd place finishes in races #1 & #3 respectively. Even with a sketchy start to the season consistent podium positions have put Colin Turkington into 6th place of the driver standings for the season. Jason Plato is not far behind in 8th place, while Team BMR (Silverline Subaru BMR Racing) is holding 4th in the Team Standings. Upcoming Rounds Round 10: Silverstone (17-18 September) Round 11: Brands Hatch GP (1-2 October)

Round 2: National Capital Rally (27-29 May) After the first round in WA where Team Subaru placed 4th, Molly Taylor and team were feeling cautiously optimistic going into round 2, the National Capital Rally in the ACT. The WRX STI NR4 faced off up against some intense competition in the 27 car field on a variety of roads. Day 1 saw the cars blasting through pine forests on rough red dirt roads; while Round 3: International Rally of QLD (17-19 June) Day 2 is on the other side of town and had more The International Rally of Queensland is also an Asianarrow technical roads with harder limestone Pacific Rally Championship round and is regarded as surfaces. the endurance round of the Championship, with high speed stages on hard packed clay. Molly was keen to The Subaru do Motorsport team faced some build on her outright third place in the Australian mechanical challenges on Day 1 including a faulty Rally Drivers Championship, in front of an thermostat and a failing front differential that required a gearbox change at the end of the day. This international audience, with 32 cars including eight meant that at the end of the day the team was sitting from five other countries, stretching from Indian to Japan and New Zealand. in 5th place. Four of the top 5 were still Subaru’s though, with Simon Evens & Ben Searcy sitting in 1st place in there WRX. Slippery conditions caused by recent downpours on Day 1 made it hard for Molly to maintain her usual Day 2 and the gearbox change at the end of the day consistency. “We started off well, but I felt we went a before ensured a smooth start on the cold Sunday bit backwards during the morning after that, which morning. When Evans went off into a ditch it wasn’t helped by us being held up by another car on presented an opportunity for Taylor to move up the the third stage, which cost us time. While that was a leaderboard, finishing 4th for the day and equal 4th bit frustrating, given how slippery it was, we were for the weekend. This was enough to secure 3rd place doing OK, but then something happened in the rear in the Driver Championship behind Harry Bates suspension on the last stage, which again cost (Toyota Corolla S2000) and Simon Evens (Subaru time.” At the end of Day 1 Taylor & Hayes were once WRX). again sitting in 5th Place and just like in the National Capital Rally 4 of the Top 5 cars were Subaru’s with Simon Evens & Ben Searcy sitting in 1st place in there WRX.
Torrential rain, shortened and cancelled stages and multiple competitor mishaps proved no obstacle for the Subaru do Motorsport team on Day 2. Overnight showers degenerated into heavy rain after Sunday’s first two stages and the attrition list was high, including Simon Evans rolling on SS11. The day’s afternoon stages were cancelled, replaced with a nominal 1.2 kilometre run to ensure the required distance was covered to enable points to apply in the Kumho Tyre Australian Rally Championship 2016. Molly said: “The first two stages were slippery but at least it wasn’t raining. But after that it really started pouring and it was just like driving on black ice. It certainly wasn’t an incentive to take risks and was very difficult to judge. We were very aware of picking the line. It almost felt like we needed studded tyres for a while. There was just no room for the ground to absorb any more water with this rain so soon after the recent storms.” With an equal 4th place finish for the weekend Molly Taylor holds third place in the Kumho Tyre Australian Rally Drivers Championship 2016 but only by 1 point! Harry Bates (Toyota Corolla S2000) swaps 1st place with Simon Evens (Subaru WRX) who moves back to 2nd.

Round 6 2016 S&J Automotive Club Mallala Super Sprint
13 WRXSA members including several new faces braved the cold and the rain to compete in Round 5 of the S&J Automotive Club Championship.
7 Entrants were treated to fine conditions for the Porsche Clubs Super Sprint. Entrants took advantage of the conditions and most saw their PB's fall.
With many other high powered car struggling for any form of grip in the wintery conditions the event was declared Wet, thus only outright positions were to be used to calculate CC points.
The day was a first for Mallala Newbies Michael Arnold and Jacob Richards both of whom posted some impressive times for their maiden 'cherry popping' event at Mallala.
Those that braved the near freezing conditions were soon warmed up with a BBQ lunch, big thanks to Damien Andersen for playing Chef. The rain also cleared and the final runs of the day were rain free, providing better conditions for times.
Round 6 results were the closest of the championship, with John Schaefer clenching the event.

We welcome the opportunity to meet with clients in our space as we have everything at hand, and it often helps clients take a step back from their own day-to-day environment and see the bigger picture. Look Who’s Torqueing
This will be the last column from myself as Club President for the time being. Our Club Constitution limits a person to just three consecutive terms as President, and at this years AGM in the start of September my time is up. It is perhaps good timing as towards the end of August my employer, Mitsubishi Motors, is sending me to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates as the Regional Export Manager for the Middle East market. Certainly my involvement with the Club from ‘Day Zero’ until today has been very rewarding. I have me many good people (and a few baddies!!), made some excellent friends, and learnt a lot about cars, yes Subaru’s and others. The secret is to remember that you only get out from the club what you put in. Always offer others friendship, ideas, help, support and encouragement. If you do this you will get everything in return. The other great benefit that has come from my involvement is the numerous opportunities I have had to improve my driving skills. You never know where your limit is until you exceed it. Do it at a controlled training venue with wide run off areas and you will increase your knowledge and experience, while improving your skills. Do it on public roads, and you could well destroy your car, and worst of all, you could injure yourself and others. I would strongly recommend that you take every chance possible to participate in Driver Training Days and Track Days as you will become a safer driver, and yes they are also great FUN!
