LOOK WHO’S TOURQUING Jason Bartsch Welcome to another edition of Rex Driver. This is probably a good time to introduce myself as the newly elected President of our club. My name is Jason Bartsch but I'm probably better known for my car. The Goose. We started off this new membership year fantastically. We had a great turn out to our AGM. Some new faces on our committee which will help fresh ideas rolling in. Plus it great to see new people willing to volunteer their time and efforts. Our number of renewals this year was also the best in recent years. This tells me our club is something people want to continue to be a part of. As this edition goes to print the motorsport season for 2016 will be drawing to a close. Our Eblens Collingrove day was an outstanding success. Many new members, new competitors and sponsors coming to enjoy the day.

The SA time attack saw a record number of WRXSA entrants. Our club also helped sponsor and promote the event which helped it to be very successful. I wish all our club championship competitors the best of luck as the competition draws to a close. It is sure to be a nail biting finish. The WRXSA Christmas celebration is coming up promises to be a great family day out. A river front location kindly offered to us by the Wilden's. The annual boxing day cruise will be on again this year. If you only make one cruise a year, make it this one. Some of the best roads Adelaide has to offer. Lunch at Victor Harbour and the scenic route back home. To all our members, have a safe and happy festive season and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Jason Bartsch

What another exciting Spring season it has been! Our Club committee has been busy organising events and activities for members to enjoy and the motorsport season has been heating up as well.

I have not always been into Subaru’s. My teenage years saw me, like millions of other Australian boys, into Holden’s. My car life started with a 1977 TD Gemini wagon. This car was my freedom wrapped in a bright yellow wagon! Looking back, I guess this was the beginning of my obsession with wagons as well.

sedan with the unforgettable black and blue leather interior).

The little Liberty and I went on some great adventures, including the ‘spirited’ run down to Victor Harbour to save Easter. My sister and her family were staying with me Easter Saturday and then From the Gemini, I progressed onto Commodores – travelling down the coast for an Easter Sunday at VH and then VS’s. None of these cars stayed Victor. Around midnight I got the call! She had left all standard, I couldn’t help but make my cars more…me. the Easter bunny gifts, for her young children, at my Wheels, stereos, exhaust systems, suspension and house. A run to Victor, late at night, no traffic and then paint. They all went the way of the car cool temperatures – who could resist? I overtook a lot enthusiast. of cars that night, and received a lot of looks from the irritated drivers. Just outside of Victor the dreaded Then one day my uncle introduced me to his WRX, Brandt alarm shut the engine off! A nice police officer then his WRX STI and finally his WRX WRP10. The pulled over to see if he could help. He put his reds rumble of the Subaru exhaust was mesmerizing and and blues on for safety reasons. That’s when the cars hypnotic. The Commodore was sold and my first I had overtaken all went passed. I couldn’t see them, Subaru was parked in my driveway. Not being able to but I knew they were all amused. All I wanted to do afford a WRX, I went for the next best thing – I was was to let them know that he was helping – not the proud owner of a 2001 Liberty B4 (the twin turbo issuing tickets!

Then came a little dark moment. I traded the Liberty in for a VE Commodore SV6 wagon. But we talk wont about that. 9 months after the little hiccup – I finally got my hands on my first WRX. A MY06 Subaru WRX wagon – in WRC blue, brought in from NSW. The car was happily nick named Lil’ Blue. The car was everything I wanted. Well almost. Lil’ Blue had it’s windows tinted, wheels imported from South Korea, exhaust, digital radio, suspension and so much more done to it. It drove like a dream, handled beautifully and brought many a smile to my face. Unfortunately a small medical issue with my knee meant I could no longer handle such a stiff clutch. The doctor gave me a decision: trade in the car for an auto, or face the possibility of numerous knee operations. Lil’ blue went up for sale and I bought a stock standard MY11 Liberty. Non-turbo, non-wagon, non-fun.

and would someday love a racecar of my own - but finances and commitments have other ideas.

The shared love of Subaru, the knowledge base and the friendships are what this club is about. This is why Whilst searching the web one day, I stumbled up my we are proud to wear our club shirts at all events and current car. It wasn’t long before I was back behind a to proudly stick the logo on our cars. This is why I love turbo car and back in a wagon. I had got my hands on this little club of ours! a very clean MY07 GT Spec B Subaru Liberty wagon. I found WRXSA just after the dark VE Commodore times. With the purchase of my WRX wagon came the need to share my enthusiasm with others. The social events are what I love to attend. I am an avid racer –

So if you see GAZZA7 cruising around, or see me cooking a BBQ at one of the race meets, don’t forget to give me a wave, say hello and share a Subaru story or two. Gary

Ben Wilden – Member profile Around the age of 11 I remember seeing the wide world of sports on weekend television. While I saw so many cool sports the WRC really drew me in when it was played. The noise the cars made as they zoomed past the TV cameras, the whine of the mechanics and communications in the car and the absolute elegance of seeing the pro rally drivers dance their cars around the corners. I think this is when I started to really appreciate cars as more than something your parents drove you around in. My eyes were glued to the TV seeing Colin McRae do his thing in a fierce battle with Tommi Makinen. Both of which are 2 of my favourite cars to this day! This passion grew for cars and as others at school couldn’t wait to have a VL the humble Morris Mini drew my eye. In 1998 I bought my first car. A 1970 Morris Mini K in baby poo brown also known as Californian gold. The engine was shot and it needed a bunch of work but to the shell but over the years I fixed it up. First was a new 1100cc engine as per the original. When a 1275cc found its way available many years later it got some treatment with a 1330cc bore, cams, roller rockers, a sweet exhaust, dry suspension, CV joints and disc brakes. What a beast! While I loved it wasn’t practical as an everyday car so in 2004 I bought my first Subaru!! A 1999 Impreza RX. I was young and still on traineeship wages training to be a jeweller, so I couldn’t afford the “W” in the WRX range. In 2006 I was forced to change jobs from jewellery with an increase in a hectic training regime in the sport of trampolining. So I sold the Subaru and bought a 1993 Suzuki Swift GTI for $700. It was running on 3 cylinders when I got it but it was only a spark plug and lead change at away it went!! It lasted me a good few years of abuse and getting me around on the cheap before it went bang and became scrap metal. In August 2008 I was selected to compete in the Beijing Olympics for trampolining. I finished 13th in the games and am proud to have reached that goal despite not having stood on the podium. Enter 2010, the time had come…. Time for the real thing! A silver 1999 Subaru Impreza WRX!!!! It had a freshly rebuilt EJ205 with an Ecutec level 2 tune running through a freshly built box with PPG straight cut first and second gear. It was love at first whine. The sound that thing made was incredible! In 2011 I ran away to join the circus…. No joke.

I moved to Las Vegas and performed in the Cirque Du Soleil show “Mystere” for nearly 2 years. A friend of mine in an Evo had entered the OzGymkhana series when it started it wasn’t long before I jumped on board to join him out on the racetrack. Later dragging Brendan Moore out to get amongst it too! It was this event that got onto the WRXSA club and I joined up to get my CAMS license. I’d had good success in the series for a car running 156kw on standard suspension and made the top 8 shoot out a couple of times. Late 2013 I got the call from the circus to again join them… so…… I ran away to join the circus. This time I was on tour and spent a few month in Taiwan and 2 years in Japan. When I got home late 2015 I bought myself a 1998 Nissan Pulsar SSS to get me around as I started back in my career as a manufacturing Jeweller. Not a bad little car but it was in need of some work that I just wasn’t willing to do. It was only with me few months before I bought my beloved SpongeBob. A 2000 Impreza WRX Club Spec Evo 4 wagon!!! 300 of the custard yellow Club Spec Evo 4’s were released with 250 being sedans and only 50 being wagons. The previous owner, Glen Breugem, had done an amazing job with building this car. It’s the complete package he has proven great results in it. A huge credit goes out to him for this build. Since owning the car I’ve not done too many mods to it. I had to replace the gear box after I broke 2nd gear in the 03 6MT STi box that was in there at Mt Alma Hill Climb. Also replaced the brake discs and front pads. I’ve given the paint work a meticulous detail and maintained anything that might be wearing out.

This build yields great power and heaps of fun at around the 220kw mark on 98ron and 240kw on e85 on 17psi while maintaining good daily drivability. It has been properly tuned for 20psi for hill climb events but I have yet to run it on this boost yet. Its quite punchy and with the 6 speed it feels like it goes through the gears mighty quickly!! I LOVE the versatility of the wagon. The night before time attack I had a dishwasher loaded in the back to bring home and then in the morning it was ready to drive to Mallala with all the club merchandise loaded up. After unloading I headed straight onto the track for the come and try… after checking tyre pressure of course.

The adventures I’ve had with this car are still in the early stages but a big credit to all the guys and gals at WRXSA for making me feel a welcome part of the Subaru family and I look forward to building more friendships with everyone as we adventure on cruises and motorsport events together. P.S. Don’t forget with the Hot weather coming its time to break out your WRXSA stubbie holders to keep your hands warm and dry while your drinks are cold and wet! Did I mention I'm the merchandise officer for the club??? Hehehe!! Ben

Eblens Subaru Hillclimb Challenge By Megan Jane

The annual Eblen Subaru Hillclimb Challenge on September 4th brought an impressive crowd to Collingrove. It was Round 9 of the S&J Automotive Championship Cup, run by WRXSA, and I had the pleasure of attending not only as an enthusiast but as a competitor as well. I was kindly invited by Damien Hirst to experience a sighting lap at a previous event when he took me through the narrow, winding incline as a passenger in his STI. I’d watched many events at this well-known South Australian hillclimb track so it was only natural that I would contemplate experiencing it for myself. Driven Motorsport had gifted me an entry to the event and it was finally time to take my Evo IX up that hill! As a Mitsubishi owner, competing in WRXSA club events may seem unconventional to some but it’s actually been the complete opposite for me. I’ve built friendships with many members and even with those three diamonds gracing my front grill, I have come to feel very accepted among the crowd. This particular hillclimb event has the most amazing community feel. As a first timer, not only was I encouraged leading up to the event, but I was constantly supported on the day with tips and reassurance. There is always a competitive atmosphere among the more serious contenders, who are chasing PB’s and championship points but I felt this was the perfectly chosen event for my first time out.

There was a significant crowd of entrants gathered early in the morning, preparing their cars and chatting amongst each other. I drove into a sea of Subaru’s with the odd Associate Member in their VW, Skyline or Evo. There was even a Mustang which seemed to have no trouble navigating his RWD beast up the narrow road. My pit buddy Gordon had entered his new Volvo S60 and he was very excited to try out his new car having gained plenty of experience in his Falcon prior to this event.

Entrants had the chance to do a sighting lap before official sessions started and I asked close friend and WRXSA member Dylan Butler to be my passenger so he could show me some of the racing lines and any other useful tips. He’d been out to Collingrove many times in his WRX and he now pilots an Evo 8MR. He understood my rookie perspective and even an explanation of the start line procedure was appreciated as I didn’t know my wheel would be chocked in order to get my launch just right.

There were ample sessions to really get a hang of the track. It’s not as narrow as it appears from spectator points but there are certain corners where I felt my wheels were very close to the crumbling tarmac edges. Utilising the space to its full extent simply comes down to practice. Forty second bursts of speeding up that hill left me with a smile plastered across my face. The Evo is made for that type of thing and I knew my novice skills were not yet ready to get the most out of the car.

Although unlike my experiences at Mallala Motorsport Park, I wasn’t at all concerned with my times because the sessions were so enjoyable. If you appreciate taking your car through the hills, I can’t recommend the Collingrove Hillclimb enough!

Father’s Day did not seem to hinder the turnout with spectators buzzing around the start line and pit parking all day. What a great way for fathers to spend their special day with their family! The major sponsors – Eblen Subaru and S&J Automotive – ensured that there was plenty to enjoy besides the racing with displays of their promo vehicles and of course the beautiful S&J 22B. WRXSA had kindly put on a barbeque for both breakfast and lunch for the members and their families. The event even included a Parade Lap for anyone wanting to take a cruise up the hill or get a photo of their car. That opportunity also meant that I could take my partner for a lap when he hadn’t seen it first hand before. This was obviously my ploy to get him to take his own car out next time! Meanwhile, back to the competition! Many of the WRXSA members that I’ve come to know were out to not only have some fun but contribute to their championship points for the year. Jacob Richards had kindly offered duel entry of his WRX wagon to close friend and WRXSA President Jason Bartsch.

Quite a few of us thoroughly enjoyed watching the discomfort Jacob revealed once Jason (also known as Wreck It Ralph) took his car for the first run up the hill! Jason began to creep closer to Jacob’s personal best at one stage and that was when Jacob pushed himself even further finishing third for the day with a 34.96. While Jason Bartsch secured a 35.23 in a car he’d never driven before! Glenn Breugem, ex Subaru owner, now piloting his Evo VII was second place for the day with a 34.85. While Damien Hirst, king of consistency, placed first outright with an impressive 33.52. Overall results ranged from the low thirties through to the low forties and any major incidents were avoided. The live timing allows competitors to get immediate results and this allows for some playful banter at the officials shed. One of the best parts of this event was the ability to drive in with my car and then drive straight onto the track. No extreme preparation was required assuming you’ve ticked all the obvious boxes such as brakes, safety and fluids beforehand but most car enthusiasts have these boxes ticked anyway! My car allowed me to race it up the hill, have some fun and drive home, and I did exactly that. All feedback from the event seemed to be extremely positive; I know mine was. My first hillclimb had me hooked and huge credit to WRXSA and sponsors for making days like this possible.

SHE DID IT! Molly Taylor has made history as the first woman to win the Australian Rally Championship! Joined by codriver Bill Haynes this victory is the ultimate reward for a hard fought season that has shown that strong consistent results are the key to success. The title came after rally leader Mark Pedder incurred a one minute time penalty after competition concluded, this relegated him to second place and was incurred for arriving late to a time control point on the penultimate stage.

The results of this timing enquiry post-event left the Subaru team on tenterhooks – only learning of their success as they awaited their turn to drive onto the podium at the ceremonial finish in Coffs Harbour.

A delighted Molly said: “I can confirm today that dreams really do come true. Talk about taking it down to the wire! We knew we had to give it everything on those last two stages after a really consistent run all weekend and we pushed so hard. This win adds to the Subaru Australia trophy cabinet, And then to get the news that there was a possible where 10 consecutive ARC titles from 1996 to 2005, penalty for Mark, it was like being on a made an unbeaten benchmark before the team rollercoaster. withdrew from domestic rallying, only re-emerging this year under the Subaru do Motorsport banner. On the afternoon of November 11 I was working away at my desk when updates in a group chat kept grabbing my attention. Two of my friends, WRXSA members, Jacob Richards and Dylan Butler were entered in this Rallysprint event which was being held that night. I hadn't even heard of it until this point, but it didn't take long before I'd decided to take an early minute and drive out to Adelaide International Raceway (A.I.R) to see it for myself.

First up, drivers were given one opportunity for recce (reconnaissance), which is the task of taking a drive through the course to absorb as much as you can about lines, hazards and strategies and then it was straight into the sessions. I ran up the hill to get a glimpse of the cars hitting the track for the first time. Organisers had utilised the whole space with a few areas for cars to hit wide open throttle but there was also a hair pin and some chicane action further along. It looked like a lot of fun and enough variation to keep drivers I drove into the paddock and easily found a challenged and entertained. You could hear park not far from the impressive line-up of SJ1000 on the track before you could see it. It race cars who were being ticked off for sounded incredible and watching it pull up in scrutiny. It was immediately obvious that well time before the hair pin turn was nail-biting. known South Australian motorsport competitors were out to give it a crack. S&J The layout of the course meant entertainment Automotive had the freshly built “SJ1000” STI for spectators too with opportunity to see the ready to tackle the course piloted by Dan Day entrants take on the corners in different ways with Kate Catford as navigator. A friend told without spinning out. There were so many me that this was the first of the series to be great spectator points and after the held in Adelaide but the planners had high excitement of seeing the cars out there for the hopes. The event has been ongoing in NSW first time had worn off, I crossed under the and WA for quite some time now. I had limited main straight across to another spectator knowledge of A.I.R and its track layout so I was point. I was extremely content with the spot intrigued to see what organisers had set up I’d found opposite the grandstand. I was so close to the pit straight as the cars flew down and how the night played out with driver to take on the hair pin. I could've sat there for times. hours watching them. There was no one else around either; just me and my camera. WRXSA was also being represented by Jacob Richards in his WRX wagon with Dylan Butler as his navigator, as well as Nick Galliford in his There were very few spectators there at the beginning of the event. It was scheduled for a R33 Skyline. Speaking to both drivers 6pm start, which is almost suitable for those beforehand I learned that they were extremely keen to get out there as they didn’t who until 5-5.30, but the location may be a bit know what to expect either. out of the way for some. I am grateful to be my own boss and not have far to drive to There was a variety of cars, the majority allreach the track. As the night went on, the wheel-drive, but different levels of main seating area opposite the drag strip got horsepower and driver skill level. Set up in six busier and busier. This is a catch 22 for me as I different classes, multiple awards were up for love quiet events when it comes to being up grabs whether you were a Subaru, Skyline, close to the action and not having to deal with Pulsar or one of many Evo’s who were out in crowds, but on the other hand, I want events force. Entrants had the choice to include a like these to get as much publicity and make navigator as passenger which depending on as much money as they possibly can. It's who you asked this could be very valuable or events like these that are fantastic for our maybe not needed after a few sessions. Either local motorsport scene. way, I feel I could vouch for mostly everyone that having permission to have a passenger for the entire event just made it more enjoyable for everyone.

The night seemed to run smoothly with a few minor offs and mechanical issues for different vehicles but there were a lot of happy people. Sessions ran for three hours without any breaks, unless the track required clearing. There was so much track time for each entrant and I heard zero complaints from any of them. Jacob seemed to be out there for the longest of any entrants, making the most of his track time and you couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face. “It was definitely one of the most fun events I have done and a good first experience in a “rally” style race. Brilliant value for money also.” – Jacob Richards Nick Galliford was handling his RWD platform with skill, with co-driver Andrew Campbell. He was making the most of the hair pin turn with some neat slides. Unfortunately he made contact with a tyre stack later in the night but the damage was minor and he still took out second in his class! “It is a great concept and was a good way to spend a Thursday night.” – Nick Galliford As 9pm rolled around, I was so glad I’d made the effort to head out there. I’d been there for over four hours absorbing the racing from different vantage points. The organisers presented multiple different awards to the drivers depending on the car such as AWD and RWD. Dan Day took the overall win in the S&J 1000 STI, laying down a 1.25.7, with Kate Catford in the Nav seat. Ben Calder and his TME Evo took second with a 1.26.4 and Nick Streckeisen won third place, laying down a 1.27.5 in his R35. With Round 1 a success, the organisers have Round 2 set for December 8 and Round 3 is on January 12, so make sure you check it out, or better yet enter your car!

Time Attack competition in Australia is certainly going from strength to strength. There is no doubt in my mind that the World Time Attack in Sydney has become a world class event that not only provides exposure but also credibility to the sport. Its scale and scope is a hit with spectators and has clearly inspired the organisers of the SA Time Attack, resulting in an event worthy of its title. Giving spectators something to do or see at all times is central to this. From drift displays during the dinner break, the Slow Life Show and Shine, Vendor Alley and even a model competition; there was very little down time and this resulted in spectators that enjoyed themselves and will likely return for more next year. World Time Attack also gives competitors around the country something tangible to strive for and this is essential to drive improvement and innovation. Watching the Open Class cars (some of which had just returned from competing in Sydney) was a real eye opener. Big Power, big brakes and aggressive aero were paired with some very ballsy driving and when the sun went down and the lights came on; they were a sight to behold! Flames, Sparks and red hot rotors, what more could you ask for?

Given that the main event was held in the afternoon, and more or less all the competitors have had some experience driving at Mallala; it was also great to see that there was a Come and Try event held in the morning. This un-timed format has proven to be a very good step in getting more people to take the plunge and get there car onto the track. Everyone I spoke to that took part in this were very happy they did and couldn’t wait to get back out there again! If this wasn't enough the State Motorkhana Championship was also held during the day on the skid pan! So this truly was a complete event that catered to spectators, first time racers and some of the best drivers in the State. I can’t wait to get back out there again next year! Seth Coultas

Tech Tips Battery Isolator By Damien Hirst

Unlike daily drivers, a weekend car often sits in the garage for quite some time until you get that fine day or event on to bring it out to play. Owners of a weekend car will know from time to time it’s a big disappointment to jump in to fire it up and damn it! The battery is flat! Subaru Brandt alarms have a habit of speeding up the drainage of a battery too. A simple low cost modification to solve flat battery dramas can easily be done by installation a battery isolator switch. Different isolators are available but I went for that race look ‘key’ switch which is removable to aid security also. This was only $20 from Super Cheap Auto. Installation is easy, and I found a great out of sight location at the rear of engine bay for it to sit. A bracket was fabricated to sit the isolator in and a small length of new cable to run the bypass from the original connectors. There’s all different ways to connect the isolator and any way will work in the same principle. I’ve had the help from Shorty’s Fabrication as I wanted a neat bracket made. But our Club Sponsors S&J Automotive or Driven Motorsports can connect this on your car if you’re not mechanically handy.

Simple, cheap and effective. Every performance car should have one. - Cuts power saves battery power and life. - Perfect for Brandt Alarms - Adds security to prevent thieves - Quick power kill in emergencies - Looks race car bling

Round 7 Collingrove Hillclimb August 7th 9 WRXSA entrants came out for a day of hillclimbing fun, with over half recording new Personal Best times.

The weather was perfect albeit a cold start. But a feed of bacon and eggs was just what the steward ordered and proved so popular we ran out!!

The morning session of the event saw our practice and passenger rides, which continue to prove very popular. Being able to take a mate or a family Unfortunately the day ended prematurely for John and Thomas Schaefer with suspension issues, but not member for a ride up the hill, is a buzz to all whom before both recording some quick passes up the hill. participate. This is something that most other events don't offer. Just another great reason to enter, or come as a spectator. Outright Placing Points: 17 pts: J. Schaefer: Round 7 Winner! After a lunch curtsey of Reynella Subaru the 17 pts: M. Arnold competition runs commenced. Those friendly rivalries 16 pts: D. Daly were out in full force with entrants trying to chase 16 pts: J. Roarlach each others times as only Outright points for the Club 13 pts: M. Knighton Championship were to apply for this event. 12 pts: T. Schaefer 11 pts: M. Reed The end of the event saw Collingrove Veteran Damien 8 pts: G. Scanlen Hirst (STI) take a clear win with a 33.52 ahead of 7 pts: A. Salisbury Glenn Bruegem (EVO) 34.85 and Jacob Richards (WRX) 34.96. Round 8 Motorkhana August 27th Trophy Winners Unfortunately this round of Motorkhana was Standard Class: Matt Langbrandner cancelled by the organizing club. Modified Class: Damien Hirst RRD: Jacob Richards Round 9 Eblens Hillclimb Challenge Associate: Glenn Bruegem September 4th This years much anticipated round of the WRXSA / Eblens Hillclimb challenge proved to be another great success. Much time is spent organizing this event each year and it was fantastic to see it once again so well received by WRXSA club members. We even had several members join up just for the privilege of participating in our great day. 42 members entered the event and I'm sure 42 enjoyed it.

Round 10 SA Time Attack October 29th 16 members competed so big points were up for grabs! Look for full results in the next edition of Rex Driver.

Round 11 Legend of the Lakes November 5th It’s a bit of a hike from Adelaide to Mount Gambier but that didn’t deter the 6 adventurous club members that competed in this exciting hillclimb event Look for full results in the next edition of Rex Driver.

Leaderboard After 9 Rounds As we head into the last few events the competition is tight and the pressure high for those at the pointy end of the list to make a big final push to see if they can dislodge those above them and claim Championship honours. It will all come down to the final round, Willunga Hillclimb who will have what it takes!
