I feel, hand lettering is customizable; you’re doing anything that works particularly for project. Rather than buying a font just for the project. In a way, you’re not bound by the font itself. You can have the freedom to customizable it anyway to your liking. So why not hand lettering? On top of that, it’s one and only, that’s the key word and I am sure any client would love to hear.

I feel, one of the key qualities I have learnt through hand lettering is patience. Hand lettering is about try and error. In order to progress, you have to keep working on the same piece over and over again. Making the same mistakes, redoing on the same piece over and over again and this process teaches me to be more patience.

I feel, Hand lettering has taught us to think out of the box, de-constructing and re-creating different letter forms. This entire process really spark our creativity to think out of the box. It also allows me to improve in my work in general- visual work especially. To learn things from craft, such as hand lettering, it helps you and brings you down to the technical aspect of type anatomy, understand how type is formed and how it can be used.

I feel, we have learned to plan better because through the little sketches, you tend to have to plan what you want to do next. Form there, you slowly develop further. I guess what makes a good designer is constantly going back and refining details, and this is how hand lettering can help us to be a better designer.

I feel, hand lettering trains my eyes to be more sensitive towards letter forms. During my first experience in doing hand lettering, we have to break the form of the letter and retain it as well. Eventually, you kind of have to know which part of the letter form is important to retain so it will still looks like an alphabet in the end.

I feel, this experience allow me as a designer to break away from looking at the computer. This allow us to look at things differently, as there is always so much to do on computers. Sometimes I have the preference get on a paper and a pencil, as it’s much easier to get to these tools and get things done. On top of that, using these tools make us look into finer details while making.

I feel, as an illustrator, learning hand lettering would be an advantage as it allows me to come up with different lettering styles which complements my work. Some of the troubles I faced when I want to infuse type into my work, is usually quite crappy because we just can’t find a type that would match. Now, with hand lettering, we can draw out something that could really match.

I feel, hand lettering gives us a different perspective on things. When you working on a computer, you simply just type in the word. Whereas hand lettering on the other hand, allows you to do things to it. It’s more free form when you can do it on paper as compared to doing digitally. When you do it by hand, it is more fluid and has more freedom, a lot more room to explore and one wouldn’t realize through digital.
