When it Comes to NOW Vitamin D... D stands for Different, Diverse and Delicious

Vitamin D from NOW is different in a good way from other brands that can help deliver more health benefits to you…and the earth.

Different - Our Vitamin D softgels are definitely different. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so having it delivered with a fat source, such as an oil carrier, can help improve absorption. Many Vitamin D3 softgel products use an oil carrier of inferior flaxseed or soybean oil, which may be from a GMO source or present an allergy concern. NOW uses ultra-healthy Olive Oil in our easy-to-swallow softgels, so we can deliver even more health benefits with less impact on the earth.

Diverse – NOW offers one of the most diverse selections, dosages, and sizes of Vitamin D in the market including softgels, liquid drops, chewable, vegecaps, and vegetarian source. There's a product for every use and everyone in your family.

Delicious – Our Chewable Vitamin D3 1000 is a naturally flavoured delicious fruit punch, strawberry, and raspberry flavoured delight. Carefully chosen natural sweeteners reduce negative impact on your teeth and blood sugar levels. With NOW Vitamin D, you get better absorption, more health benefits, and something good for the environment – that’s a Vitamin D product you can feel good about taking regularly.

You can trust NOW to do things a little differently from the rest.

s another year comes to a close, we are wise to reflect and to withdraw from our memory the events that have transpired in our lives over the past 365 days and to learn from the experiences we have had. We may tend to take for granted many of the days that pass us by; however, we would do well to be acutely aware of the reality that these precious days are indeed limited. According to the WHO’s World Health Statistics for 2013, life expectancy in Canada, which is one of the highest in the world, is now at 82 years and that number continues to get higher every year. That equates to approximately 30,000 days you will have on this earth, if you are lucky. 30,000 days may seem like an eternity if you are a young person. A great many of you in Canada are on or around day 23,740 and have just, or will have soon, celebrated your 65th birthday. From your perspective, day 30,000 probably seems to be approaching much faster than you may have ever expected. Seeing that we are all running on an ever-draining hourglass, wouldn’t it be prudent to do anything you could to slow that flow of sand? How do you ensure that you get as much time as possible? If you subscribe to an anti-aging regimen, you are already likely participating in an active lifestyle. You obviously exercise and are focused on disease prevention through constant hydration, proper nutritional intake and dietary supplementation. You commit time to your mental health through meditation, yoga or deep reflective thought while alone. You engage in activities that offer you mental cleansing such as leisure time spent with family or friends or in solitude if that’s what works for you. You pledge to give your body the time it needs to heal and recover through adequate rest and sleep. You do not expose yourself to an excess of anything including chemicals, alcohol, sun, smoke, or decadence of any kind. You continuously detoxify your system through nutrition, exercise, perspiration and perseverance. You walk a fine line between preservation and reservation in your pursuit of life experience. You appreciate the simple things that nobody notices and you marvel at the fact that your life is yours to do with what you choose and you choose wellness over sickness, joy over sorrow and free choice over dependence. Take stock of the past year and the things you did to extend not only the length but also the quality of your stay here on planet earth. It is inevitable that you cannot win the race against Father Time, but if you stay fit and take care of yourself, you may be able to outrun him for a little while longer than expected.

he one thing we can all agree upon is technology is here to stay. Those of you who said the Internet was just a fad and wouldn’t be around long…well…I think you may have been mistaken. Some of us (maybe most?) require technology to do our job. We have no choice. Others who don’t require it for career reasons may use it for recreational purposes, like Facebook, viewing digital photos or booking a vacation. There are many who have never embraced it, maybe because their job doesn’t require it or maybe who feel they are too old to learn the ins and outs of using any form of computer. If you fall into the latter group, I have both bad news and good news: the bad news is we are only going to get more techno-driven, so I gently encourage you to get on the bandwagon as soon as possible. The good news is the technology is getting easier than ever to use, so you can be up and running in no time. One area that seems to be moving at light speed in this area is the development of applications (or apps) for your device. It is almost impossible to keep up with the new products coming on market. For the health-minded individual, natural health apps are be-

coming more prevalent. In seconds, you can have access to everything from natural recipes to remedies, natural product user forums, the latest products and upcoming local health events. The more you explore, the more you will see how specific and detailed you can get when searching for an app that suites your purposes. Let’s take VISTA’s vHealth app: it was created to allow VISTA Magazine readers to receive discounts and exclusive deals from natural health product retailers, manufacturers and suppliers in their specific geographic area – directly to their smartphones. The vHealth app is driven by the website www.vhealthportal.com and contains all the educational content found in the pages of VISTA Magazine. The vHealth app also offers a listing of more than 2,000 Canadian retailers, manufacturers and suppliers of natural health products and health practitioners from every field imaginable. Technology is a tool. Use it to eat better, take better care of your family, and find the products that best suit your needs. And continue to work in conjunction with your health food store professional or practitioner. Crosscheck the info you find on the Internet with them. Remember, they are the ultimate experts, the trained professionals who can provide you with definitive answers to your questions. Bruce W. Cole, Guest Editor

VITAMIN D3 –

A VERY BUSY NUTRIENT.

By Marva Ward CNP

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 91

V

10

itamin D3 is a unique fat soluble vitamin, as it can be sourced from the diet or from internal synthesis. Foods that contain naturally-occurring Vitamin D3 are few and far between. It is found almost exclusively in fatty fish such as mackerel, salmon and herring and, of course, in cod liver oil. Sourcing vitamin D through internal synthesis occurs when we expose unprotected skin to UVB rays from the sun. With the help of cholesterol, it is converted within the epidermal layer of the skin to a pre-vitamin D3 – cholecalciferol – and then transported to the liver, where it is converted to calcifediol. The final step occurs in the kidneys where it is converted into the active form of vitamin D: calcitriol. Obtaining vitamin D from the diet is somewhat problematic due to the limited food sources. However, it has also been shown to be challenging to produce through internal synthesis as well. Several factors limit the skin’s production of vitamin D, which include living at latitudes north of the 49th parallel (Canada), winter months with less sun exposure, avoidance of the sun through the use of sunscreen and/ or clothing, and individuals with darker skin pigmentation. In Canada, it is said that the strength of the sun’s UVB rays is minimal during the months of October through to April and we are unable to produce this vital nutrient during the winter months. How do we know if the sun is strong enough to stimulate the production of Vitamin D? A rule of thumb is that any time the sun is shining on your skin at such an angle that your shadow is shorter than your standing height, your body is able to manufacture vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is widely known for its significant role in the formation and maintenance of bones and teeth, regulating the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood, as well as playing a large role in the absorption of calcium into the bones. However, over the past ten years, science has come to learn that this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as the numerous functions vitamin D plays in our bodies and in the state of our health. Scientists are continuing to discover the critical role that vitamin D plays in a healthy, functioning immune system. Adequate serum levels are supportive in protecting against seasonal flu and cold viruses. One of the latest discoveries is that vitamin D receptors influence the activation of T-cells into natural killer cells. A lower level of vitamin D has been associated with auto-immune disease. Scientists initially made the connection after statistics showed that multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease and other auto-immune diseases were more

prevalent in Canada, the Northern USA and Europe than in countries in the more southern regions. In the article “Vitamin D: An Evidence-Based Review” from the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, 2009, Kulie Groff states that there are numerous health consequences linked to low vitamin D levels: • Heart disease: In the Framingham offspring study of more than 1,700 individuals, those with the lowest vitamin D levels were the most likely to have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event in the five-year study period. • Type 2 diabetes: Vitamin D may have roles in insulin secretion and action. Low vitamin D levels are linked to type 2 diabetes. • Falls: Several studies have shown that vitamin D supplements decrease the chance of falls among the elderly, perhaps because of improved muscle function. • Cancer: In the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of more than 16,000 men and women, those with higher vitamin D levels were less likely to have colorectal cancer. In a separate study of nearly 1,100 men, higher vitamin D levels were associated with fewer total cancer cases. Some studies demonstrate lower rates of breast and prostate cancers with higher vitamin D levels. Harvard Health Publications indicates, “Vitamin D has an important role in regulating cell growth. Laboratory experiments suggest that it helps prevent the unrestrained cell multiplication that characterizes cancer by reducing cell division, restricting tumor blood supply (angiogenesis), increasing the death of cancer cells (apoptosis), and limiting the spread of cancer cells (metastasis).” Science is just beginning to understand the profound influence that this nutrient has in optimizing health. If maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D is a challenge, the solution may lie in daily supplementation of this vital nutrient. Although there is an ongoing debate on daily supplementation requirements, Health Canada recommends the following: • Adults – 400- 1000 iu/ day • Children – up to 400 iu/day A visit to your local health food store will help you find the right vitamin D supplement for you and your family. TELOMERES:

LESS ISN’T MORE By Cory Holly

I

n simple terms, telomere length is a genetic factor related to our general health. In fact, telomere length is now recognized as a biomarker for predicting the timeline of our individual life expectancy. Shorter telomeres equal less life. The word “telomere” is derived from the Greek nouns telos meaning ‘end’ and merοs meaning ‘part.’ Telomeres are regions of repetitive nucleotide sequences or base pairs at each end of our 46 chromosomes.

Telomeres consist of genes that protect the end of our chromosomes from deterioration or fusion with neighboring chromosomes. Here’s another way to think of telomeres. They’re a collection of ring-like “caps” that function to protect the end of a DNA strand from being frayed, unraveled or worn out. For this reason, the function of telomeres has been compared with the plastic tips on shoelaces, which prevent the shoelace from fraying and unraveling.

Enter Telomerase: Another “New” Miracle Pill?

Telomerase is the body’s natural enzyme that promotes telomere repair. It’s active in stem cells, germ cells, hair follicles and most cancer cells, but its expression is low or absent in non-reproductive cells, meaning most of our 100 trillion cells. Scientists want to know why telomerase is repressed in most cells, because if they can find a way to stimulate telomerase activity in somatic cells without screwing everything else up – as they have apparently done by genetically modifying our food – it’s theoretically possible to keep our cells alive for a very long time. Here’s what telomerase does in reproductive cells. It adds bases to the ends of the telomeres as they shorten, which keeps the ends of our chromosomes stable. Ultimately, the rate of telomeric addition is equal to any telomeric subtraction, so the net effect is immortal cells that never die. Imagine if we could harness or control this effect. Do you want to live forever? Ask Dorian Gray. Or better yet, watch the movie. His answer will surprise you. Cells with genes that do not express telomerase gradually lose telomeric sequences as a result of incomplete replication. As telomeres shorten, cells eventually reach their replicative or “Hayflick limit” and progress into senescence or old age. Cells can divide only about 50 to 70 times, after which – due to telomere loss – they become unstable and degenerate. But here’s a key question that remains unanswered. Is telomere shortening the cause of disease, decay and death? Or is telomeric loss simply an effect of cellular damage like age spots on the skin, caused by how we live and a complex array of environmental factors such as stress, oxidation, glycation, radiation, gravity and entropy? Shorter telomeres are recognized as a cause of poor health and accelerated aging. Telomere length to some degree does reflect how well we’re taking care of ourselves, but even if we do a superlative job of self-regulation, our telomeres will still shorten. Telomeric DNA is reduced more quickly when oxidative stress and glycation are constant and no willful action is taken to buffer, decrease or manage that stress. Glycation is a technical term for a kind of fusion reaction that occurs between proteins and sugars, especially fructose. Consuming lots of sucrose and fructose accelerates telomere loss. Glycation causes lots of damage and tends to increase over time with age. It’s a haphazard process that impairs the function of living cells. Smoking, excess alcohol consumption and excess body fat all shorten telomeres faster compared to controls. Nature isn’t prejudiced. Once we cross a certain biological line, reality demands more of our telomeres as a toll. Fact: Telomere loss occurs less rapidly as a result of intelligent stress management, meditation, fresh air, clean water, regular physical exercise and optimum nutrition. Are we surprised?

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 91

Every cell (except red blood cells) contains a nucleus with genes and chromosomes. This is where we can find our personal book of life written in digital language as a genetic code. Chromosomes are made up of DNA molecules that are millions of bases long, coiled up like a slinky. When a cell divides, the genetic material inside that cell needs to be copied by a process called DNA replication. During this process, enzymes that replicate a strand of DNA are unable to continue replicating all the way to the end. This causes the loss of some DNA. At birth, we have about 10,000 telomeric base pairs. But as we burn in the fire of time – and due to continuous cell division – our telomeric sequences slowly disappear. Each time a cell divides, an average person loses 30 to 200 base pairs from the ends of that cell’s telomeres. At 5,000 bases we begin to show evidence of old age. We lose functional lean mass, forget things, need cheaters to read, experience fatigue more frequently and don’t recover from exercise as quickly as we once did. Losing telomeres is not cool. Unlike homeopathy, less is definitely not more. When telomeres shorten, we are headed in the wrong direction. When cells divide, telomeres shorten – and bad things happen when telomeres get shorter. So, what is the maximum life span of our species? Currently, it’s 122 years. That’s how long Jeanne Louise Calment of France lived and she’s someone we know that lived that long for sure. Unlike Methuselah (969) or Li Ching Yuen (256), her age was verified by experts who examined her birth records. Then, if our maximum life span is potentially well over a century, why is the estimate of life expectancy in Canada for someone born in 2013 only 81.57? What happens to us? Why do so many of us die prematurely? What happened to those missing 40 years of love and joy? Do they just evaporate? No. Our cells divide, they get damaged, telomeres get shorter faster and nasty things happen. There are plenty of other factors in life that create our diminishing return – things like infant mortality, accidents, epidemics, plagues and wars. Fortunately for most of us born in a country with law and order, good sanitation and access to decent whole food, those factors aren’t nearly as relevant compared to living in Chad for example, which ranks lowest in the world for life expectancy at 49.07 years. Be thankful if you live or were born in a land of prosperity and freedom – a place where clean water flows abundantly and crimes like rape and murder are relatively low. Such good fortune provides us with ideal conditions that predispose us from birth to the likelihood of living longer with better health. Hence, the higher life expectancy estimates. Other factors that help prolong life include living in a warm temperate climate isolated from the mob, walking five to 10 kms per day, speaking your mind, eating clean natural food and taking no prescription medication. But in spite of such privilege, many of us ruin ourselves by eating the worst diet imaginable and physically moving less in one day than a three-toed sloth or garden-variety slug. An important distinction must also be made between length and quality of life. Many of us will be kept alive far too long by the last-ditch rescue efforts of modern medicine. Why does the cavalry always show up after the battle has been fought?

PROFESSIONAL BRIEF

PICHABIO Q & A As conducted by Dan Tidsbury

Vista: We’re sitting down with Joe Quadri, President and Founder of Fikzol Collagen Supplements and Creator of PICHABIO. So let’s start off by telling our readers what PICHABIO is. Joe: Sure. PICHABIO stands for Promoting Individuals and Companies in the Health And Beauty Industry Online. The concept of PICHABIO is simply connecting people to a wide range of online health and beauty information and services that is fascinating, interesting, educational, informative, helpful and inspiring. Vista: But Fikzol is natural product company. Why branch off into an “online information service”? Joe: We have specialized in high quality, premium collagen supplements for over 14 years, manufacturing and distributing the 3 most predominant collagen types – Types I, II, and III. These types cater to so many different areas of the body, i.e. skin, hair, nails, eyes, muscles, connective tissue, joints, cartilage, inflammation, energy and more. Collagen can also play a contributing role in weight loss and weight management when exercising regularly and following a healthy diet. So, because collagen covers so many different areas of the body, it made sense to create an extension of Fikzol that connects someone to so many areas of the health and beauty service industry that conceivably are relevant to collagen. Vista: I see the connection now. But isn’t PICHABIO also about health and beauty tips, industry news, and other informational categories that may not have anything to do with collagen? Joe: Yes, PICHABIO is essentially a moving parts machine providing not only information that directly or indirectly relates to the many benefits of collagen. PICHABIO will also be developed into a full content health and beauty site featuring industry news, health and beauty trends, entrepreneurs and their inspiring stories, all eventually rolling out as Pichabio.com in 2014. What we see now on fikzol.com is Part 1 of a 4 Part project. Vista: It sounds like Vista Magazine might have some new competition on our hands. (laughter) Joe: (laughter) No, no, no, not at all. There is a huge difference between an online magazine and an online information service.

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 91

Vista: This is a great time to ask you exactly how PICHABIO works.

14

Joe: PICHABIO is all about taking the time to promote an individual or service company in the health and beauty industry. Visitors go to fikzol.com and click on JOIN PICHABIO to recommend an individual or service company in the health and beauty industry that has made their day, improved their life or even changed their life. A more detailed explanation of PICHABIO is on our site at fikzol.com. In this way, PICHABIO becomes a 2-tier referral service: referrals by the user that registers and referrals by fikzol.com sent to you in a monthly Health and Beauty Information E-Basket. On top of all that, participation is free! Vista: What is a Health and Beauty Information E-Basket and how does someone get it? Joe: A visitor goes to fikzol.com, clicks on JOIN PICHABIO and fills

out our registration form. It takes about 30 seconds to fill out. The steps are super easy to follow. We actually give you 10 Quick Pick answers you can choose from to finish the form quickly. The other option is to write a testimonial and submit it to us. Once you click “submit,” your submission goes to our quality control department for approval. Once approved, an incredible Health and Beauty Information E-Basket is automatically sent to you filled with links to amazing health and beauty websites you may not have even heard of. You may receive a coupon or a great deal with your E-Basket. The website links we send you with your monthly E-Basket will always be new and fresh. Some of the health and beauty sites we provide you will be so unique, in all likelihood, you would need to spend a great deal of time on the internet just to find them. PICHABIO does it all for you. Vista: So, someone must promote an individual or a company in the health and beauty industry to receive their E-Basket? Joe: Correct. PICHABIO is directly attached to the E-Basket. A new E-Basket is available every month with brand new links and fresh information. We want you to visit us at fikzol.com every month and promote someone or a service company in the health and beauty industry every month - hopefully someone different every month, but that is not a requirement. Vista: You keep mentioning “service company”. Do you mean no one can promote products on PICHABIO? Joe: Correct. PICHABIO is only about the user promoting services, not products. And this absolutely includes not promoting Fikzol Collagen products on PICHABIO as well. In fact, if a user sent us a Fikzol Collagen testimonial on PICHABIO, we would not approve the testimonial and simply contact the user via email and get their permission to post it on the Fikzol Testimonial page. Vista: It all sounds great. But do you feel that some people might be a little shy about participating? Or maybe a consumer doesn’t have the time to promote anyone. Joe: Really fair question. We have 15 international languages on fikzol. com explaining what PICHABIO is. Our economy is doing relatively well, but there are many customers, patients, friends living in struggling economies that would love to send some business to exceptionally talented professionals or a great service company. We truly hope Canada and, of course, the United States will embrace the concept and help a professional or service company that may need more business. Vista: On your website you use the term “ground breaking” and make the statement “first in the world”. I have to ask. Is this really true? Joe: Yes, it is very true. A service like PICHABIO, with its monthly E-Basket integrated with a natural product company, has never been done before. Integrating this unique service with a natural product company with a complementary and relevant purpose truly makes it ground breaking. There is no other natural product company or pharmaceutical company that has tied its products to a concept like PICHABIO. Vista: What you’ve created is truly positive and inspiring on many levels and we wish you the best. Thank you for walking us through PICHABIO.

CHOOSE NATURAL REMEDIES

FOR COLDS & FLU!

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 91

C

old and flu season is upon us! The late fall through early spring is typically the peak period for the most commonly-occurring viral infections: influenza-like illnesses including the flu, and upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold. Although it can be annoying and downright inconvenient to have a cold or flu, sometimes it’s our body’s way of telling us something important about our state of health.

A CLEANSING COLD?

Sneezing and coughing, along with a runny nose and watery eyes, can be the body’s way of releasing toxins, including acidic waste which may

have been accumulating for a year or more. This natural process plays an important role in releasing an over-burdened body of toxic load. Modern medicine continues to offer quick fixes for cold and flu symptoms, but at what cost to the body’s natural cleansing mechanism? Let’s take a look at the available symptomatic relief found in the consumer marketplace and what the overall cost to your health could be.

DRUG-BASED COLD & FLU MEDICINES NOT SIGNIFICANTLY EFFECTIVE

Antihistamines, decongestants and analgesics – often combined in a powdered form to be mixed as a hot drink – are normally used to treat

www.vistamagonline.com

the symptoms of cold and flu in the hope of decreasing nasal secretions, sneezing, congestion and sore throat. The most recent Cochrane Database Systematic Reviews (February 2012) included 27 trials with 5,117 participants. This scientific review found that, although sold in large quantities for the common cold, evidence of effectiveness of over-the-counter (OTC) products containing antihistamines, decongestants and/or analgesics was very limited. In particular, there is no evidence of product effectiveness in young children. While these OTC products provided some general benefit in adults and older children, the benefits must be weighed against the risk of adverse effects.

WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF COMMON COLD AND FLU MEDS?

Over-the-counter cold and flu medications have multiple side effects. They commonly include drowsiness, dizziness and possible interactions with antibiotics, blurred vision, dry mouth, gastric disturbances and potential heart palpitations. Additionally, some patients with a cold or flu who try antihistamines to enhance sleep actually experience the exact opposite effects – with anxiety, sleeplessness and agitation being very common. Antihistamines, normally used to treat allergies, are used in the hope of decreasing runny nose and sneezing by blocking the action of histamine. It is more helpful to the body to allow the secretions that contain the virus to flow out of the body rather than trying to block them. Decongestants – used to shrink nasal blood vessels in order to relieve swelling and congestion – further reduce the body’s natural ability to properly release viruses and toxins. Decongestants should be used with caution by those with a history of any heart disease or high blood pressure, and are not recommended at all for children under age six. Analgesics – such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin – help to relieve aches, pain and fever, but may mask the signs of a developing bacterial infection in the body. Aspirin and ibuprofen also cause significant mineral depletion. Minerals are essential to proper immune system function and for the maintenance of body alkalinity. A proper pH balance in the body is crucial to curbing excessive inflammation as well as preventing viruses and bacteria from multiplying and spreading throughout the body.

HEALTHY IMMUNITY AND PH BALANCE ARE KEY

A healthy immune system is the best protection against colds and flu. The factors that can contribute to a less than optimally functioning immune system include poor quality sleep, excessive exercise, stress, smoking, recurring or chronic illness, or an unhealthy diet – all of which contribute to creating an acidic environment within the body’s internal fluids. Since the body’s natural and health-giving state is alkaline, when an acid condition prevails, cellular oxygen is decreased. Bacteria and viruses thrive in an acidic, oxygen-deprived environment and the converse is also true: they cannot survive when the pH is properly balanced to an alkaline state.

THE NATURAL APPROACH

18

Herbs and herbal extracts traditionally have been used for centuries to help strengthen the immune system and offer relief from the unpleasant symptoms associated with colds and flu viruses. Herbs, along with immune supporting nutrients such as vitamin C and zinc, may be helpful in reducing the severity and duration of illness. In combination with eating alkaline-forming foods, these herbs and nutrients are most helpful. An easy-to-read alkaline food chart and pH paper (to help monitor your body’s pH) can be found in your local health store. View the pH chart at: http://www.prairienaturals.ca/files/R&S%20Flyer.pdf. Certain plant compounds have been shown in studies to have immuno-stimulating properties. They appear to help stimulate viral

defense mechanisms by activating immune cells. Herbal tea mixtures or cooked decoctions have long been used in many cultures because of the synergistic effect of the herbs.

SCIENCE SUPPORTS NATURAL REMEDIES FOR COLDS AND FLU

Recent research suggests that the high molecular weight polysaccharides present in echinacea purpurea have potent non-specific stimulatory actions on the immune system. Echinacea is generally recommended for use at the very beginning and throughout the course of an illness and then tapered off. Lemon balm (melissa officinalis) has been traditionally used as an immune-strengthening remedy with colds and flu. Several components (e.g., rosemarinic acid and caffeic acid) are reported to possess anti-bacterial and “viro-stopping” properties. Lemon balm is widely used as a mild sedative to calm the nerves and producing a relaxing sleep – ideal in times of stress and infection. Sleep deprivation is associated with disruptions of immune function. Vitamin C, elderberry extract and zinc are a better choice than antihistamines at the start of a cold or flu. Elderberry binds to and prevents infection from the influenza H1N1 virus. Studies suggest that black elderberry can inhibit the growth of influenza viruses and shorten the duration of influenza symptoms while enhancing antibody levels against the virus. Vitamin C and zinc help to overcome an infection by strengthening mucous membranes of the nasal passages and throat against virus penetration. A Cochrane systematic review performed a subgroup analysis of 642 very healthy adults, engaged in highly physically stressful activities (marathon runners, skiers and soldiers on subarctic exercises), and showed a 50 per cent decrease in the risk of developing a cold among those who took vitamin C supplements. Vitamin D is an important immune regulator, stimulating innate immunity and moderating inflammation, in addition to its well-known effects on bone health. A suboptimal level of vitamin D is associated with weaker production of anti-microbial proteins that work with immune system cells to kill pathogens.

TASTE THE POWER OF HONEY, LEMON AND GINGER

Hot tea with honey, lemon and ginger is another popular remedy during winter months. Honey is a home remedy commonly used to treat the symptoms of respiratory infections, particularly scratchy throats and coughs. (Note: unpasteurized honey should not be given to children younger than two years old.) Lemons are high in vitamin C, and lemon juice’s anti-inflammatory qualities soothe sore throats and irritated membranes. Ginger helps stimulate perspiration, which cleanses the system and reduces body temperature. Like lemon, ginger has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger also acts as a cough suppressant and has remarkable sleep-inducing, analgesic properties. In Chinese medicine, ginger is used for its warming properties.

KEEP HYDRATED!

During a cold or flu, dehydration can dry the respiratory mucosal surfaces. Ensure adequate fluid intake while avoiding deficiencies of essential nutrients by sipping on several natural hot lemon, honey and ginger drinks during the day and before sleep. Natural remedies can be effective as preventative or therapeutic and their use is becoming increasingly supported by enlightened healthcare providers as a safer and healthier alternative to over-the-counter cold and flu medications.

THE HOSTS OF CTV’S

THE SOCIAL INTERACT ON OUR PAGES By Dan Tidsbury

It is obvious to even a casual viewer that there is something special about the way these four work together. Some common ideas stand out as they try to explain. The first is mutual respect and enjoyment of each other’s company. Cynthia: “We are a diverse group and it is a pleasure to come to work.” Melissa: “The most exciting part is that it is a special group, a huge team that puts it all together every day. Viewers need to know that we genuinely like each other and have worked together before, so it is a real connection.” Lainey: “Yes, we all like each other. What the viewers see – those relationships – they really exist on and off screen.” Traci: “From the moment we sit down, it’s easy and fun. I can’t explain just how much I enjoy working with this group.” Within the context of those positive relationships, there is still room for genuine debate. Melissa: “Chemistry will make or break a show like this. You really need diverse thinking. The result is often heated debate, but yet intellectual debate in a context of mutual respect. We have to be aware, though, because if it crosses the line and becomes strident, viewers become uncomfortable and you have lost them.” Cynthia: “We often all have different perspectives, and once the conversation starts, we frequently push each other’s buttons, even if not intentionally. When it comes to issues like child raising or parenting, for example, as a new mom, I have some passionate opinions.” Lainey: “Chemistry is exactly the right word. The audience should see what happens when the camera is off. Our on-screen interaction is an authentic extension of a real-life healthy workplace even though we disagree – a lot.” Traci: “I think that is the key. These are real conversations between

people who listen to each other and respect each other, even when we disagree. The disagreements just make the relationships richer.” The authentic quality of the debate stems from the individual ideas and priorities that each of the hosts brings to the show. Traci: “As a single mother of twins, my life is jam-packed and fun. My parenting experiences, like all of our life experiences are part of what shape our viewpoint. It is not always easy living life on screen, but this is what I have chosen to do.” Cynthia: “I identify as a hardcore feminist and I am passionate about issues around diversity and equality. That outlook underlies the way I approach topics across the spectrum of contemporary life.” The key element in The Social equation is the viewer. Making use of social media, viewers are able to engage directly in the conversation as the show progresses. Cynthia: “The four of us are close in age but our diverse out looks encompass a wide spectrum of viewer ideas and we deal with issues that are important to Canadians. We look for viewer input that takes conversation in a different direction. Bringing in a wide range of ideas, including those from our viewers, will hopefully make people think about things in a different way. “In some ways, the advancements in technology have seen us become more lonely and isolated. We want to create a forum where people can challenge others’ thinking and be challenged in turn.” Melissa: “We are cognizant as a team that the way people watch TV has changed as a result of the explosion of social media. People want to watch and engage at the same time – have TV function as a two-way medium. Viewers are now participants. In fact, the viewer is the most important person in the equation.” Traci: “I am just thrilled with the connection we have developed with our viewers. Women come up to me on the street or at events and say things like: ‘I can’t believe you are actually talking about that.’ or ‘My girlfriends and I were just discussing…’ Even men are engaged to a greater extent than one would think. People feel it is their show. “The expectations started to build right from August rehearsals. The Social provides a chance to hear other peoples’ stories, and maybe to engage with those stories and live vicariously through them. I think it makes us more sensitive to other’s personal challenges.” Lainey: “As a blogger, I am used to having a lot of contact with read-

key part of CTV’s fall lineup this year is The Social, an innovative daytime program that combines the lively and frank interaction of four informed and aware women with the opportunity for the viewers to engage and participate via social media. The result: an experience that is anything but scripted and predictable. Cynthia Loyst, Lainey Lui, Melissa Grelo, and Traci Melchor are The Social’s four co-hosts, and they share with Vista their thoughts on a range of topics from the chemistry that makes The Social work to parenting with a very public profile.

The show is driven by the viewers.” Although all are described by Melissa as being “Type A” personalities, the demands of producing a daily show combined with all of the other things happening in their lives makes maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle a challenge.

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 91

Traci: “The truth: balance is elusive. But I try to concentrate on the small things. I swear by my spoonful of coconut oil every morning – my mom is from St. Lucia and has always insisted on it – and I try to make sure I have breakfast every day. Healthy smoothies, green tea with cinnamon – every little bit helps. I might make some questionable choices as I go through the day, but at least I get a good start. I also am so grateful for help from friends and family. As a mom, I am reminded every day that ‘It takes a village…’”

22

Melissa: “I find the pursuit of personal balance challenging. I am 5 months pregnant. I also do a morning show. With an early wake-up call and going live by 7:00 AM, my day is non-stop from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM. And I am not unique in this. In fact, all of us have a full slate of other commitments. “I am learning that I have to make some choices about my life after work: pulling back on my social calendar, traveling less for a while, and taking on fewer charity events. “Maybe it is not so much finding balance as learning to be a good juggler – sometimes you just have to add another ball.” Cynthia: “I am a first-time mom, and I used to think I was a tough cookie. Now, I have become a bit of an emotional softie. I want to show my son that you can be a good parent and engage in your career as well. I am fortunate to have a partner who is an active part of the process and we have a great caregiver as well.” Lainey: “My life is full, and I really have no free time. I just moved to Toronto three months ago and am still in the process of making it

www.vistamagonline.com

After just a short time on air, The Social is clearly gaining traction and building an engaged and loyal audience. How is that momentum going to be maintained? Cynthia: “The Social fills a hole in the Canadian TV market and resonates with a broad spectrum of viewers, people who love TV and social media. These are multi-taskers and they are actively engaged in doing many things at once and connecting in different ways on different levels. I hope the show can create a community for them.”

Traci: “The basic template for the show has developed, but it can still evolve as social media and/or culture changes. It is malleable, so it can be shaped to meet the needs as they emerge.” Lainey: “We were all so excited to start from scratch and put our own stamp on the show. I am very happy with how the show is evolving. Nothing is ever perfect, but there is constant improvement and a willingness to improve. The creators of the show were smart in recognizing that the show needs to change constantly. It is built on flexibility, designed to be able to evolve with the trend leaders.” And we’ll give the last word to Melissa: “The Social is successful because it is reflective of what is happening on social media and in the larger community. As long as we continue to engage our viewers on that level, it is only going to get better.”

home. I am in the middle of writing a book. I guess you could say I am just managing at this point. But I love my new home, my husband, my dog, and all the things we do together like spending stolen moments at the beach. I certainly don’t feel any need to “find” meaning in my life. I am just busy living it.” Melissa: “I think is some way we are all learning to take our foot off the pedal and not always go full speed ahead.”

RECIPE FOR HEALTH 2013

CRANBERRY COCONUT

MILK SOUP By Tracy Kaye Holly CSNA Master

T

he holiday season has arrived and there will be plenty of leftovers in your fridge. Here’s a simple and tasty soup that is vegetarian as is or can be “beefed up” by adding your favourite tissue protein. You can also puree this soup for a totally different texture, and then add the protein. Either way, Cranberry Coconut Milk soup is deliciously colourful and warming and will bring out the holiday spirit in your family and friends. Coconut milk contains many vitamins, minerals and electrolytes, including potassium, calcium and chloride. The saturated fat in coconut is made up of short-chain and mediumchain fatty acids that the body quickly turns into energy instead of storing as fat. Many athletes use coconut derivatives as a natural perfor-

mance booster. Half the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut milk are composed of lauric acid, which is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal. Coconut milk can help boost the immune system. Cranberries are among the highest of the antioxidant plants possessing an ORAC value of 9500. The major flavonoids in freshly squeezed cranberry juice are quercetin and myricetin. Both are known to strengthen the cell wall, reduce inflammation, modify blood fats and improve tolerance to allergens. Regarding the well-known natural treatment of urinary tract infections with cranberry juice, it is a specific proanthocyanidin identified in cranberries that prevents various strains of bacteria from adhering to the inner walls of the bladder and urethra. The adage “what treats also prevents” certainly applies here.

THIS RECIPE CAN BE DOUBLED MAKES APPROXIMATELY 6 LARGE BOWLS

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 91

1 heaping Tbsp coconut oil 1 cup onion finely chopped 1 cup celery finely chopped 1 cup carrot finely chopped 3 cloves crushed garlic 3 cups filtered water 1 cup frozen cranberries 2 Tbsp Mrs. Dash (original) 2 cups pre-cooked wild rice 2 cups coconut milk 2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice ¼ cup orange zest 2 tsp red chillies (optional) Salt and pepper to taste (optional)

24

Put onion, celery and carrot into skillet with coconut oil, sauté for 5 minutes until slightly tender. Add sautéed vegetables, cranberries and Mrs. Dash to pot of water. Simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes. Add cooked wild rice and coconut milk. Lower heat and continue to cook for additional 15 minutes. Add fresh orange juice and zest. I like to crush the cranberries once they are softened in the soup as they tend to be too tart for most palettes. This soup is vegetarian; however, you can add chunks of leftover turkey, chicken or prawns. Try blending this soup to make it puree. It’s a nice change! Or you can cut the vegetables chunky style for a different effect.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH DISCOVERED! TELOMERES AND TELOMERASE IN THE NEWS.

I

t has taken 29 years since a 1984 Biology discovery for the words ‘Telomeres’ and ‘Telomerase’ to become mainstream. Three US scientists were awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize for their work on the telomerase enzyme. Recent news items on CTV, in the Globe & Mail and Men’s Health magazine are continuing to educate us on the importance of this ground-breaking discovery. Scientists and researchers have been seriously looking at how this discovery could extend human longevity to 150, even 200 years, and beyond. They think it’s possible to do it in a healthy body looking no older than 40. While the science is complicated, a simple explanation is that as your body ages, the telomeres, the protective ends of each chromosome, shorten with each cell division. The Hayflick Theory of cell division tells us that our cells will only divide 40 to 70 times, then go into senescence and eventually die. When enough cells die, we die. The rate of cell division is conditional on many factors. The more damage from injury, illness and toxins our bodies accumulate in our lifetime, the faster our cells will divide and the shorter our telomeres will become. Several studies show that people with short telomeres for their age compared to a similarly aged healthy person are much more likely to get cancer, heart disease and other age-related diseases. At this time there are pharmaceutical drugs under development and testing to counteract the shortening of telomeres. The problem: they are at least 5 to 10 years away from Health Department approval.

WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

With over 8000 studies on telomeres and telomerase activation, the mainstream media is now reporting that there are ways to lessen the shortening of your telomeres and slow down the dividing of your cells. Vitamin and herbal anti-oxidants, essential fatty acids (EFA’s) such as fish oil and moderate exercise are just a few. For those who can afford it, there is a product that is proven in double blind studies, to actually stimulate the telomerase enzyme and add length to your telomeres. A nutraceutical, not a drug, TA 65 has been tested in double blind studies for 5 years for efficacy and safety and has been in the marketplace for about 7 years. Patented worldwide, it is a rare extract of astragalus a Chinese herb used safely for more than 5000 years as a potent natural medicine. It is costly, as it takes 6000 pounds, 3 tons, of astragalus to produce about a pound and a half of the molecule, TA 65. Depending on your age, the cost is $150 to $600 month. But then, how much is your health worth?

BENEFITS OF TA 65 IN THE NEWS

Dr. Gifford Jones, in an April 12, 2012 Toronto Sun article (syndicated in 50-plus newspapers in Canada), reported that a 2005 study showed that TA 65 had a positive effect on vision, causing improved eyesight in elderly men. Also seen was an improvement in the skin with a reduction of wrinkles. He further noted that TA 65’s activation of telomerase increases blood flow to the genitals, increasing virility in men. Many women users of TA 65 report similar findings. Other studies using TA 65 showed cognitive and verbal memory improvement and increased bone density. Researchers also observed a lowering of cholesterol, blood pressure and fasting blood sugars. All of this resulted in increased energy and flexibility. One double blind study shows a substantial increase in the immune system. Anecdotally, most users of TA 65 report less cold and flu attacks and lessening of symptoms if they do get it. You will be fascinated by the June 22/13 Globe & Mail article about how exercise and diet play a role in controlling telomere shortening. CTV’s program on Sept 19/13 contributes to the information on telomerase activation. The very informative article in Men’s Health, ‘Building the Super Athlete’, takes you through the latest techniques and supplements, including TA 65, for increasing stamina, strength and keeping the body at an optimal state of health. You can access these and many more articles and pivotal, double blind studies on TA 65 at www.corenatural.ca , the website of the Canadian distributor for TA 65. TA 65 is available across Canada from doctors, anti-aging clinics and natural health stores. Check the website for locations or phone 289-217-3004 for information. They say today, 70 is the new 50. The explosion of knowledge about natural medicine and healthy eating has undoubtedly contributed to healthier bodies. Thousands of scientists, doctors, movie stars, professional athletes and people like you have discovered the addition of TA 65 enhances their lives. Taking TA 65 now can only increase your chances of remaining disease-free as you age.

relieve symptoms of chronic bronchitis. It is supportive therapy in the treatment of inflammation of the respiratory system, and it helps to reduce the severity and frequency of influenza-like symptoms. Rather than reading what I have to say on the benefits of C-NAG, I thought it might be more impactful to read some of the testimonials I have received from people who have tried the product and found tremendous results. As you will see, C-NAG was able to address a gamut of health issues. Anne H. recently wrote: “I am happy to say that after taking CNAG, my Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) had been helped and cleared up - I no longer have diarrhea. I also have osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. I found that after taking C-NAG, the pain symptoms in my hands were gone over night and I can now make a fist, which I have not been able to do for 12 years. My many thanks to C-Nag.” Linda G. is another C-NAG user who has battled through some serious health issues, but found relief with the product. “I had been on chemotherapy for breast cancer for five months. While I was on chemotherapy, I barely got any sleep at night, due to the aching muscles in my back that kept me awake. I was exhausted every morning. I was up and down out of bed all night...I was so uncomfortable. I tried taking natural sleeping pills but they didn’t work due to the strong chemotherapy I was on. “My husband was getting relief using C-Nag for his osteoarthritis, so three quarters of the way through my chemotherapy, I decided to give it a try. I am happy to tell you it made a huge difference. My muscles didn’t ache anymore and I was able to get to sleep. I still got up in the night to use the bathroom a couple of times, but was able to go right back to sleep again. C-Nag also helped to relieve my aching muscles and stiff joints during the day. Even though I have finished my chemotherapy, I still take C-Nag and my muscles and joints feel better. I take three pills in the evening and three pills in the morning and it makes a difference to the way I feel.” I have been hearing these similar recitals of relief for decades. In 1993 D.J.W. remarked, “Since I began using the C-NAG, the irregularity has stopped almost completely. I do not experience the cramping or insecurity that I lived with for years.” Also from 1993, Richard T. wrote, “It has been a total of nine weeks since first staring on NAG. There has been so much improvement from my Ulcerative Colitis that I would not hesitate to recommend NAG to anyone that suffers from this condition.”

Malcolm G. recently discovered the benefits of C-NAG while trying to find relief for a severe condition. “I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my left hip about when I turned sixty. I remember celebrating my sixtieth birthday on an Alaskan cruise and I could not walk more than twenty feet without sitting down. Shortly after that, I started taking turmeric and this did help and I have been taking it for five years. However, I was not pain-free while on turmeric. There was always some discomfort. I could not really take a full stride without feeling a sting and protracted walking spells could inflame the hip, too. So I would have to favour the hip with a limp sometimes. I recently had an opportunity to try C-NAG. I took three capsules the first evening as directed. The next morning, I knew something was different. I got out of bed and my left hip joint felt looser. I couldn’t believe it! There was no discomfort. I could take a full stride without the limp. It was quite amazing. I continue to take C-NAG in the morning and at night. My hip is doing great and I can walk without discomfort.” Michael H. was seeking something for pain relief, and he found it after he discovered C-NAG. “I am an avid cyclist, but that changed a few years ago because I began experiencing pain in my legs. I exhaustively searched for relief, seeing chiropractors, therapists and acupuncturists. C-NAG seemed to effectively handle everything from Crohn’s disease to defying how we age and everything in between. I hoped that it could rebuild the damaged tissue causing the pain in my leg, diagnosed by my doctor as arthritis. I read the literature and decided to take the recommended dosage of six capsules per day and the following morning, while preparing breakfast – to my amazement – I noticed that I had no pain in my legs. WOW! No more pain! This really did prove to be a miracle cure in my case. Here I am several weeks later, still no pain.” Like Michael, A.P. had been searching for something to help ease some discomfort. “I have been having this persistent pain in my right wrist for a few months. Because I am right-handed, there was no way that I could give it time to heal properly. I decided to take C-NAG (3 in the morning and 3 in the evening) and by the next day, the pain was gone.” These are regular people like you who have found relief – from a variety of ailments – through using C-NAG. It is a proven product that delivers results. It might be something you’d like to discuss in more detail with your natural health practitioner or your local health food store professional.

DESPITE FUKUSHIMA, SCIENTISTS SAY EATING WEST COAST FISH IS SAFE

F

ollowing Japan’s devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami, fear spread about risks of leaked radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant — for the health of those living in or near Fukushima or involved in cleanup efforts, and for the planet and the potential impacts on our complex marine food web. Shunichi Tanaka, head of Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority, told reporters radioactive water has likely been leaking into the Pacific Ocean since the disaster hit. It’s the largest single contribution of radionuclides to the marine environment ever observed, according to one report. With 300 tonnes of contaminated water pouring into the sea every day, Japan’s government finally acknowledged the urgency of the situation in September. Social media are now abuzz with people swearing off fish from the Pacific Ocean. Given the lack of information around containment efforts, some may find this reasonable. But preliminary research shows fish caught off Canada’s Pacific Coast are safe to eat. It will take about three years from the time of the incident for the radiation plume to reach the West Coast, which would be early next year. Recent testing of migratory fish, including tissue samples collected from Pacific bluefin tuna caught off the California coast, assessed radiation levels and potential effects on marine food webs far away from Japan. Trace amounts of radioisotopes from the Fukushima plant were found, although the best available science puts them at levels below those naturally occurring in the environment around us. Natural, or background radiation, is found in many sources, including food items, medical treatments and air travel. The most comprehensive health assessment, by the World Health Organization, concludes radioactive particles that make their way to North America’s waters will have a limited effect on human health, with concentrations predicted to be below WHO safety levels. More reports are in the works. The UN agency charged with assessing global levels and consequences of ionizing radiation will present its findings to the UN General Assembly this month. This is where we may find answers about the amount of radioactive material released, how it was dispersed and any repercussions for the environment and food sources. The ocean is vast and dynamic with many complexities we don’t fully understand. It appears two currents off Japan’s coast — the Ku-

roshio Current and Kurushio Extension — diluted radioactive material to below WHO safety levels within the first four months of the disaster. Eddies and giant whirlpools, some tens of kilometres wide, continue the dilution and will direct radioactive particles to coastal areas for at least two decades. Fish from the water near the crippled plant are not faring so well. High levels of cesium-134, a radioactive isotope that decays rapidly, were found in fish samples there. Radiation levels in the sea around Japan have been holding steady and not falling as expected, further demonstrating that radiation leakage is not under control. At least 42 fish species from the immediate area are considered unsafe for consumption, and fisheries there remain closed. New concerns continue to arise. While the initial leak contained cesium isotopes, water flowing into the ocean from the plant now appears to be higher in strontium-90, a radioactive substance that is absorbed differently. While cesium tends to go in and out of the body quickly, strontium heads for the bones. A huge accumulation of radioactive water at the plant must be dealt with immediately. Determining the full effects of years of exposure to lower levels of radioactive contamination leaking into the ocean will take time and require continued monitoring and assessment. While Health Canada monitors radionuclide levels in food sold in Canada, and one of its studies incorporates samples from Vancouver, we need to remain vigilant and demand timely monitoring results. Any amount of leaked radiation is harmful to the planet and the health of all species, including humans. A major release of radioactivity, such as that from Fukushima, is a huge concern, with unknowns remaining around long-term health risks such as cancers. That doesn’t mean it’s unsafe to eat all fish caught on the Pacific West Coast. I’m taking a precautionary approach: fish will stay part of my diet, as long as they’re caught locally and sustainably, and will remain so until new research gives me pause to reconsider.

Once you get past the myriad of environmental factors and economic variables, what it boils down to is that there is absolutely no room for us to behave competitively when it comes to Mother Nature. What is going to happen is we are going to co-operate. How much pain we cause ourselves before we start co-operating is up to us. With regards to the immediate concern for chaga, there are three things happening. If we can get them all working co-operatively, then we can avert this tragedy and make something wonderful happen. First, with such a gap between supply and demand, chaga has become quite valuable, acquired because of scientific research. We should be channeling some of that value back to research. Second, harvesters are uniquely qualified to provide real time data regarding what’s happening in our forests. They know how much they’ve harvested, where they’ve harvested, and they know if something isn’t right. Third, scientists are the best ones to make sense of this data. Supporting infrastructure to further analyze this data is already being created. By connecting harvesters with scientists and channeling some of chaga’s value back to research, we can make some amazing things happen. For instance, we can now calculate with great accuracy how much chaga is actually out there. Even more compelling is the fact that we can use this methodology to bring sanity to the way wild plants are harvested everywhere. By connecting harvesters with researchers, we have the unprecedented ability to monitor what’s happening to our forests in real time. It also becomes possible to direct harvesters to areas that will give them the best yields without the fear of blind and competitive over-harvesting running amuck. This is something we are currently doing at greenfoot. ca. Consider this. There are over 1,000,000 undiscovered species of fungi living in our forests. How many other ‘chagas’ are out there that we don’t even know about? For the cost of one lab technician’s salary, we could be cataloging thousands of these undiscovered fungi for their medicinal potential every year. Most compelling is what this could mean for old growth forests. With each new discovery, we come one step closer to proving something that we all know deep inside but have never been able to justify: sometimes a stand of trees is worth more when it’s left standing.

Grant Lauzon found his interest in mycology at a young age from his father, who shared his passion for fungi. Although Grant calls himself an amateur mycologist, his research into chaga sustainability has led him to work with members of the scientific community to develop a sustainable non-timber forest product industry.

nterest in the medicinal mushroom chaga is surging as more people discover its powerful health benefits each day. Many have even been exploring the forest to find their own chaga. If you plan on looking for chaga, start by locating some birch trees, because that’s where it grows. While harvesting chaga for personal use is one thing, there is only one way to do it sustainably when it comes to harvesting it commercially. Unless we figure out the best way to do that, we will lose chaga very soon. It is estimated that China has 75 per cent as much ‘chaga’ forest as Canada. In November 2012, chaga wholesalers from China were boasting they could supply up to 40 tons per month. By February 2013, there were no more wholesalers in China advertising raw chaga, as they burned through their supply in two years. People have the impression Canada has this immense forest with copious amounts of chaga. However, one must consider that it takes 20 years for a chaga conk to reach maturity. When a birch tree becomes infected with chaga, it produces a finite and predictable amount of chaga growth before it dies, regardless of how many times we go back to re-harvest. It only makes sense to harvest chaga once from each tree. If we consider the time it takes for a tree to grow large enough to support a decent sized chaga conk, then it becomes apparent that a single conk represents an ecological cycle that takes at least 80 years to complete. Canada has 350 million hectares of forest but only 12 million hectares of birch forest. And only half of that is accessible. We can only harvest chaga sustainably from about 1.25 per cent of that forest per year or we are over-harvesting (1.25% = 1/80). We only get an average of 1/3 of a kilogram of chaga per hectare. When you do the math, it doesn’t equate to very much chaga... about 25 tons annually for all of Canada. Twenty-five harvesters working part time can harvest 25 tons in a year. If we collect more than that, then we aren’t being sustainable. A population of one million people will consume about 5 tons of chaga annually. Toronto alone has a population of 2.5 million. Seriously, who do we think we are kidding? We need to think outside the box and see the amazing opportunity we are being given. But to see these opportunities, we need to get past some of the craziness that’s happening right now. This insanity surrounding chaga-mania is nothing new. Interest in medicinal plants is currently a worldwide phenomenon. As many as 15,000 wild harvested species globally are being threatened by overharvesting. There’s even a new certification standard called FairWild, which seeks to address this issue – and that’s no easy task. At the heart of the matter is a vexing economic problem known as the ‘tragedy of the commons.’ This is what happens every time we compete over a shared resource like chaga. The most troubling part of all of this is that – according to economic theory – there is not a single individual on the planet that can prevent this from happening because the problem has been created by people acting as individuals, rather

GREENING BABY WIPES By Michael Bloch

I

often wonder how our parents got by in the days when there was no such thing as disposable diapers, let alone baby wipes. Wipes are very handy to have around, but I never gave much thought to the environment when I was using them. Heck, I didn’t even know what they were made of. I assumed it was some type of wood fibre.

The Baby Wipe

Baby wipe packaging isn’t the only plastic part – the wipes themselves often are, too. The material used in baby wipes can be made from silk, cotton, polyester, wool, rayon, and polypropylene – or a mixture. Price- conscious consumers are likely getting a product that’s predominantly plastic – which is derived from crude oil. So, the first green tip is to never flush this type of wipe down the toilet, as they are not biodegradable. Also, they cannot be composted and for obvious reasons, they aren’t recyclable. Unfortunately, they need to go to a landfill, where they will spend many years before they break down.

Wipes can incorporate quite a chemical cocktail, including ingredients such as sodium diamphoacetate, coco phosphatidyl PG, dimonium chloride, hydroxymethyl cellulose, methyl and propyl paraben and triclosan. Not only are there implications for human health with some of these chemicals (particularly triclosan), but as waste products, they can be toxic in aquatic and land ecosystems.

The Packaging

Baby wipe packaging is predominantly plastic. As outlined in my article “Recycling by the numbers,” not all plastics are created equal. Some can be recycled, others cannot. It’s important to check the tub for a little triangle with a number in it, which indicates the plastic resin code. If that number is 1 or 2, then it is easily recycled. If you’re not able to find packaging that can be recycled, try buying

a brand that utilizes a container you can reuse for another purpose or one you can buy refills for. I came across some baby wipes a while back that had an interesting twist on packaging – it was chalk based, made from a mix of calcium carbonate (chalk) and plastic. However, I didn’t check to see if the packaging was recyclable given the chalk content.

Green Baby Wipe Alternatives

While for some people total cessation of plastic-based baby wipes may not be possible – particularly when travelling or out and about – when at home, you can reduce consumption, plastic waste and save money to boot! You can use something as simple as a diaper soaked in warm water and then just throw it in with your cloth diaper loads. Others have come up with their own “recipes” for making baby wipes you can lug around. Note: when looking around for instructions on how to make baby wipes, I noticed quite a few pages recommending the use of baby oil as a component. As it turns out, baby oil is basically mineral oil, derived from crude oil. Environmental issues aside, there seems to be a lot of controversy as to the possible negative effects on health through applying mineral oil directly to the skin. There are also some commercially available environmentallyfriendly baby wipes around that use plant fibre and are free of synthetic chemical additives – and they aren’t all that much more expensive. If you run a search on “green baby wipes” or “environmentally-friendly baby wipes” on your favourite search engine, you’ll likely find these. Also request that your supermarket stock them – you’ll be helping out the companies that produce these wipes, other eco-conscious shoppers and, of course, the environment! TEN TIPS TO TACKLE WINTER ALLERGIES

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 91

EW YORK (October 2013) — Spring and summer are not the only seasons that bring misery to those with allergies. The winter months can be brutal for people young and old who are sensitive to mold spores and dust mites. Dr. William Reisacher, director of The Allergy Center in the Department of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat) at NewYorkPresbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, says, “During the winter, families spend more time indoors, exposing allergic individuals to allergens and irritants like dust mites, pet dander, smoke, household sprays and chemicals, and gas fumes — any of which can make their lives miserable. And with the lengthening of the pollen season over the past several years, people with seasonal allergies might find their symptoms extending even further into the winter months.” Dr. Rachel Miller, director of allergy and immunology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, adds, “Mold spores can cause additional problems compared to pollen allergy because mold grows anywhere and needs little more than moisture and oxygen to thrive. During the holiday season it is especially important to make sure that Christmas trees and holiday decorations are mold-free.” Drs. Reisacher and Miller offer these simple tips to keep mold and dust mites at bay and make the winter months more bearable for indoor allergy sufferers: • Turn on the exhaust fan when showering or cooking to remove excess humidity and odors. • Clean your carpets with a HEPA vacuum to decrease dust mites and pet allergen levels. Mopping your floors can be very effective as well. • Wash your hands frequently, especially after playing with the family pet to reduce exposure to pet allergens and when returning from public places to decrease transmission of common winter viruses. • Launder your bed linens and pajamas in hot water (above 130 degrees) to kill dust mites. • Treat your bedroom as the allergy “safe haven” of your home

• • • • •

because this is where you may spend most of your time. Your bedroom should have the fewest allergy triggers so keep pets, carpets, rugs and plants out of this room to avoid dust mites and mold from decaying plants. You may also want to place an allergenic barrier around your pillows and mattress to create a barrier between dust mites and your nose. Spray your live Christmas tree with a garden hose before setting it up and remove all dust from your holiday decorations. Install high-efficiency furnace filters, which capture 30 times more allergens, and make sure your furnace fan is always on. Keep your indoor humidity level between 30-40% with the help of a humidifier or dehumidifier to help prevent the growth of mold and mites. Change the water and filters in your humidifier according to manufacturer recommendations to avoid contamination by mold and bacteria. Perform an indoor and outdoor survey of the house every month to look for visible mold and identify areas that are at high risk for mold formation, such as a pile of firewood close to the house or an area of the basement with a musty odor.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, based in New York City, is one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive hospitals, with some 2,600 beds. In 2012, the Hospital had nearly 2 million inpatient and outpatient visits, including 12,758 deliveries and 275,592 visits to its emergency departments. NewYork-Presbyterian’s 6,144 affiliated physicians and 20,154 staff provide state-of-the-art inpatient, ambulatory and preventive care in all areas of medicine at six major centers: NewYorkPresbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, NewYorkPresbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Westchester Division and NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital. Grow Young with HGH From the landmark book Grow Young with HGH comes the most powerful, over-thecounter health supplement in the history of man. Human growth hormone was first discovered in 1920 and has long been thought by the medical community to be necessary only to stimulate the body to full adult size and therefore unnecessary past the age of 20. Recent studies, however, have overturned this notion completely, discovering instead that the natural decline of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), from ages 21 to 61 (the average age at which there is only a trace left in the body) and is the reason why the body ages and fails to regenerate itself to its 25 year-old biological age.

in the blood at the same levels HGH existed in the blood when we were 25 years old.

There is a receptor site in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so its regenerative and healing effects are very comprehensive. Growth Hormone first synthesized in 1985 under the Reagan Orphan drug act, to treat dwarfism, was quickly recognized to stop aging in its tracks and reverse it to a remarkable degree. Since then, only the lucky and the rich have had access to it at the cost of $10,000 US per year.

The next big breakthrough was to come in 1997 when a group of doctors and scientists, developed an all-natural source product which would cause your own natural HGH to be released again and do all the remarkable things it did for you in your 20’s. Now available to every adult for about the Modern medical science now regards aging as price of a coffee and donut a day. a disease that is treatable and preventable and that “aging”, the disease, is GHR is available now, just actually a compilation of various in time for the aging Baby diseases and pathologies, like a rise Boomers and everyone else in blood glucose and pressure to from age 30 to 90 who diabetes, skin wrinkling and so on. doesn’t want to age but All of these aging symptoms can be would rather stay young, stopped and rolled back by beautiful and healthy all of maintaining Growth Hormone levels the time. The new HGH releasers are winning converts from the synthetic HGH users as well, since GHR is just as effective (for anti-aging) is oral instead of self-injectable and is very affordable.

GHR is a natural releaser, has no known side effects, unlike the synthetic version and has no known drug interactions. Progressive doctors admit that this is the direction medicine is going, to get the body to heal itself instead of employing drugs. GHR is truly a revolutionary paradigm shift in medicine and, like any modern leapfrog advance, many others will be left in the dust holding their limited, or useless drugs and remedies. It is now thought that HGH is so comprehensive in its healing and regenerative powers that it is today, where the computer industry was twenty years ago, that it will displace so many prescription and non-prescription drugs and health remedies that it is staggering to think of. The president of BIE Health Products, stated in a recent interview,“I’ve been waiting for these products since the 70’s”. We knew they would come, if only we could stay healthy and live long enough to see them! If you want to stay on top of your game, physically and mentally as you age, this product is a boon, especially for the highly skilled professionals who have made large investments in their education, and experience. Also with the state of the health care system in Canada which appears to be going into serious decline, it’s more important than ever to take pro-active steps to safeguard your health. Continued use of GHR will make a radical difference in your health. HGH is particularly helpful to the elderly who, given a choice, would rather stay independent in their own home, strong, healthy and alert enough to manage their own affairs, exercise and stay involved in their communities. Frank, age 85, walks two miles a day, plays golf, belongs to a dance club for seniors, had a girl friend again and doesn’t need Viagara, passed his drivers test and is hardly ever home when we call - GHR delivers. HGH is known to relieve symptoms of Asthma, Angina, Chronic Fatigue, Constipation, Lower back pain and Sciatica, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration, Menopause, Fibromyalgia, Regular and Diabetic Neuropathy, Hepatitis, helps Kidney Dialysis and Heart and Stroke recovery.
