Barbuda

My Authentic Caribbean Paradise by Carolyn Punter

Barbuda is a quaint, closely-knit community, located in the chain 14

of leeward island of Caribbean Sea. It is the birthplace of my parents; Earl & Rebecca who held this island paradise near and dear to their hearts. So much so that although I was not born in Barbuda, the customs and traditions of Barbudans were ingrained in me which is why I cherish all of what encompasses Barbuda to this day.

Beautiful Barbuda 5th Anniversary Edition 2013

Getting accustomed to greeting total strangers at various points throughout the day “Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Night”, not something we did in Harlem-New York, but it was polite and I adapted it quickly. Being sent to the supermarket or as it is widely referred to as “the shop” with my own shopping bag - be it made of paper, cloth or plastic. Barbudans were “living green” before it became a trend. The shops were mainly small to medium sized houses with saw dust covered floors, and various large white buckets containing pickled meats or fresh local produce displayed in baskets and boxes near the counter. Dried salted, codfish hung from the top of the shop roof as well as “hands” or branches of bananas which were sweeter than any I’d ever eaten back home. Waking to the sound of nature’s alarm clock (the village cocks) who generally sounded at the precise hour; seeing livestock roam the village amongst the residents with ease.

www.beautifulbarbuda.com

Barbuda, My Authentic Caribbean Paradise There are some fascinating folks in Barbuda who are experts in the geographical make up and terrain of Barbuda who frequently share their knowledge via anthropological digs and research with various researchers and anthropologists around the world and on a smaller scale, offer guided tours of the natural wonders within Codrington Village. Two such persons are John Mussington and Calvin Gore. Visits to the caves of Barbuda will excite and intrigue the most adventurous person at heart. The three most popular caves are: Darby Cave which features a large sink hole approximately 400 ft. in diameter and 85ft. deep and also contains a small, lush rainforest; Dark Cave leads 400 ft. underground to an almost fresh water pond and contains species of crustaceans not found anywhere else in the world, i.e. rare blind shrimp; Indian Cave located at Two Foot Bay, contains Amerindian petro glyphs (rock carvings) hanging in the cave on the cave walls. I also hiked with cousins to the caves of Barbuda, but never ventured inside, but the images captured were all breathtaking.

www.beautifulbarbuda.com

Beach outings and a visit to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary where the birds are so tame, you could actually get near them. With wing spans of 85 to 91 inches, not tiny birds, it was so much fun to watch them release their large red pouch as sign of mating. There are several species of birds to bird watch in Barbuda, avid Birdwatchers visit the island to see the birds in their natural habitat. After a heavy rainfall, we’d also go Crab Hunting throughout the village with flashlights, knee high rubber boots and burlap sacks to capture and contain the crabs which would then be purged for several days with generally mango skins to clear any poisons and toxins before consuming them. I only did this once as the thought of being pinched by an angry crab terrified me. Barbuda’s annual Caribana is also one of the main highlights as there is pageantry, music, food and culture on display and Barbudans from around the world come back home for this jubilant celebration. More recently, Barbuda has its own television channel which airs on CTV - The Barbuda Channel features local events and Barbudans making their mark in the community and abroad. Barbuda is captivating and it is truly my authentic paradise.

Barbuda along with its neighbour Antigua was at first over looked by the first wave of European settlers.

OUR HISTORY Barbuda’s indigenous name, Wa’omoni was given by the original native; the Amerindians. But this island has evolved over the centuries during which most of its original culture was lost in history but then replaced by a new group of settlers who had forcibly taken to Barbuda, now the African slaves. Barbuda along with its neighbour Antigua was at first over looked by the first wave of European settlers. But by the early 1600, attempts were made by both the British and the French to occupy the island, but their efforts failed and it wasn’t until the mid 1600, 1666 to be exact, did the British accomplish this feat. However, it was not without challenges as the colonists had to be able to withstand the pressure of nature and the original natives, the Amerindians, who fought to death to keep the British off their land.

Beautiful Barbuda 5th Anniversary Edition 2013 www.beautifulbarbuda.com

By the late 1685, brothers Sir Christopher and John Codrington in exchange of one fat sheep on demand, were approved and secured a 50 year lease of Barbuda from the British Monarch to provide food for the slaves of their sugar plantations in Antigua. But notwithstanding this, the owners recognized that the slaves in Barbuda were exceptionally tall and very strong men and women, this, was where the idea was conceived that the island would also serve as a breeding ground for the provision of slave men and women for their plantations throughout the region. In addition to Barbuda being a hidden goldmine for the lease holders, the Codrington’s fortune continued to grow but not only from the profits of King Sugar. For as long as this island erupted into life, its’ been known for is very rich marine life, a fact attributed to the coral reefs that surround this small island more so on the north eastern coastline where the Atlantic Ocean washes ashore. During these earlier years this fact was not known to the Europeans who navigated down to the west without the use of modern day equipment, to safely dock them at their destination ports. For this, Barbuda

www.beautifulbarbuda.com

became infamous, because of these reefs ships carrying precious cargo of supplies and other valuables met their demise within less than half a mile off the island. The Codringtons benefited tremendously from the ship owners many misfortunes. They were then given subsequent leases awarding them additional rights to the abundant wreckage along the reefs. Walking along the eastern coastline today you may still find some remains from these wrecks dating back to the 1600’s. Most of what you may find is antique bottles of different shapes, sizes and colours and ancient chinaware some centuries old. Snorkelling along the reefs is a sure eye opener to under water enthusiasts, where you can definitely see the skeletal remains of some of these old ships. This family, the Codrington, became the islands’ most prominent family for much of the eighteenth century, hence the naming of Barbuda’s capital, Codrington. The structural remains of the Codrington estate can still be explored on Barbuda’s highest point; Highland Hills.

OUR PEOPLE Barbudans, Guardians and caretakers of 62 square miles of nature’s playground, have made an unwavering effort to conserve their inheritance. A community of expert fishermen and divers have fashioned a delectable sea food cuisine culture fit for royals. The seasonal catch of deer, wild boar, landturtle and crab makes the traditional Barbudan dishes a pleasurable delicacy. Our big-hearted island people are thrilled to share the experiences of the world’s best known deserted, pink, sandy beaches and the Bird Sanctuary -the Caribbean’s largest frigate bird nesting colony- with the world.

The close knit family atmosphere is evident in the intimate village life. This relaxed disposition and friendliness of the islanders made it a favourite of the world’s most famous princess, Princess Diana. Not to be missed is the prevailing warm hospitality that is extended to visitors who are left to explore the imitable island in the solitude they so desire. Keepers of nature’s paradise entreat you to take pleasure in our well preserved heritage- Barbuda.

BARBUDA’S CARIBANA One of the greatest whit-weekend festivals in the Caribbean is the annual Barbuda carnival known as Caribana. This festival showcases Barbuda’s talent, cuisine, lifestyle, people and most of all, the island’s rich and diverse culture. Over the past five years, the festival has grown and has been getting somewhat popular as thousands of visitors and locals alike flocked to the island where they were spoiled for choice during the 2012 Caribana festivities. The local festival exhibited a choice of lobster, crab and many more mouth-watering delights while the cultural celebration stimulated not only the taste buds, but also the ears with music from live bands and sounds of the latest soca and calypso from the season to arouse the party animal in the participants and revelers alike.

The activities began on the first day with the opening parade which showcased costumes and geared the spectators for what to expect over the next few days. The evening was host to the Teen Splash where the audience was captivated by Shaznia Beazer who took first place shot, while Marina Walker and Lesha Williams took the second and third place respectively. The second day was the Beach Bash which took place on the famous Pink Sand Beach. The afternoon was relaxed and full of fun with dance competitions that were so fierce that even some of the spectators became contestants. The evening was all about the premiere of the Big Bold, and Beautiful Pageant which replaced the traditional Caribana Queen Pageant. The night celebrated Cynthia Yearwood winning first place and Hildena Gore coming in at second place.

www.beautifulbarbuda.com

On day three, the Cornation Park was full of energy as the horse racing took place and kept spectators entertained until the early evening. The Calypso Monarch Show took over where the horse racing left off and local artist Janice ‘Stabba’ Welch captivated the audience and won the competition with her performance of her song, “Since Independence.” Day four (Whit-Monday) marked the end of Caribana, but not before J’ouvert and Last Lap where the streets of Codrington were heaving with throngs of islanders and visitors celebrating, smiling and dancing. Every aspect of the festival, from the food, music, pageants, local games and activities capture the audience and increase the energetic atmosphere and historical tradition that is Caribana – our culture.

BARBUDA SHIPWRECKS 22 Barbuda is near impossible to see from afar, since most of the island is less than ten metres above sea level, and even on a clear day, one only sees the tops of coconut trees and the island highest point; The Highlands, when just a few kilometres offshore - hence the reason for the numerous shipwrecks found here. The Highlands, on the central east coast, is merely 208 feet above sea level, but more visible nonetheless and was therefore helpful to some extent, as there are few

shipwrecks immediately ahead of the location. In bygone years, it would have been near impossible to guide a large sailing vessel in to safe harbour at night. As early as the late 1600s, European sailing vessels have been the victims of these reefs. The Codrington family, to whom the island was leased by the British Crown until the mid-nineteenth century, was beneficiary to the bounty of many of these vessels, whose cargo

Beautiful Barbuda 5th Anniversary Edition 2013 www.beautifulbarbuda.com

Barbuda Shipwrecks ranged from cocoa and coffee to precious metals. Perhaps the rum they found was the basis for many Barbudans’ affinity for alcoholic beverages. The first known instance of a ship being broken apart on a reef was the Santiago de Cullerin in 1685, which carried some 13,000 pesos, intended to be payment for soldiers in Maracaibo. The coins, luckily, were recovered before they were lost to the briny deep. The year 1727 saw the demise of another Spanish vessel, the Tometa Keta, which carried a rich cargo silver and gold. Major loss of life took place in 1749, when the slave ship Pearl was wrecked with seventy slaves and eleven crew perishing in that incident. Just six years after that, the French vessel Hazard, met a similar fate, with more than eighty slaves meeting their end (the location of which is yet to be identified). In about 1780, a Moravian Bishop suffered shipwreck on a vessel during a severe hurricane, while an English privateer, Captain Kay, suffered the loss of his ship with no loss of life. The 1800s also saw more than their share of wreckage as well. The total economic value of salvage in 1809 estimated to be £5,143 – a fortune in today’s dollars. One notable near-miss for a sailing vessel was the Opossum, which was assisted by thirty slaves. In 1831, the Codringtons themselves suffered the loss of their Lady Cordington. Some 115

www.beautifulbarbuda.com

Chinese immigrants, headed to Cuba, suffered a shipwreck, later moving to Antigua as indentured labourers. Tragedy struck in 1881 when a total of thirteen villagers drowned while salvaging the A.S. Brasford. The twentieth century was quieter, with comparatively little activity during the period. The mid-century advent of radar equipment was one of the principal reasons behind this. One of the most notable was the 356-foot vessel, S.S. Polrosa (originally named, Renata Ansinck, before being seized by the British Royal Navy in 1914 while it was in the Cameroons), which was wrecked near Hog Cliffs. This ship, owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, was one of the largest vessels ever to meet its end off Barbuda. A German submarine was one of the more recent casualties in 1941. Be sure to consider a dive adventure in Barbuda when you get there – you will not be disappointed.

Two Foot Bay National Park This National Park was used for shelter by the Amerindians who used the caves. The presence of the old stone ruins and the well indicates that it was used in the colonial period. It was also used during the Codrington tenure for the mining of phosphate as evidenced by the phosphate caves. Today, most Barbudans use this national park as a camp site. It is also where you can find Gun Shop Cliff and Barbuda’s remarkable caves. The Frigate Bird Sanctuary Experience one of the greatest natural wonders of the world – the frigate bird sanctuary which is home to approximately 5,000 spectacular sea-birds. Frigate Birds are an endangered species. These Birds are located in the Codrington Lagoon on the northwest

coast of Barbuda which is only accessible by water taxi. Since the lagoon is a fantastic place to observe and photograph the frigate birds, be respectful – don’t pressure your guide to go closer than the boundary marker. If you go too close to a nest and an adult leaves, its nest could be destroyed. Enjoy your visit to the sanctuary and help us to keep it a safe place for frigate birds to breed.

Martello Tower Martello Tower (also referred to as River Fort) is 32 feet above sea level. It’s the most impressive and complete historical site on Barbuda, constructed around 1745. Martello Tower was used as

A visit to Barbuda would not be complete without discovering these natural treasures, hire a vehicle or hop on a water taxi if you have to, but make sure you explore Barbuda...

part of a protective security system to prevent invasion by aggressive foreign powers which includes the Spanish and French naval vessels. Martello tower was also used as a signal station to the village of Codrington. Highland House Situated in the north-eastern area of Barbuda is Highland House Ruin. Now in ruins, the house was built around 1720 and was used as a retreat for the Codrington family whenever they were on island. It was a large complex of buildings, including slave quarters, stables, offices and cisterns offering a beautiful view. Spanish Point Situated on a hilltop in the south-eastern area of Barbuda is Spanish Point.

Beautiful Barbuda 5th Anniversary Edition 2013 www.beautifulbarbuda.com

The Caves This limestone outcrop provides a clear view in all directions and is an ideal observation point. The area was used as a defence point during the colonial period whereby a structure was in place to store all weapons to fight its enemies. Palaster Reef

Palaster reef is a marine reserve in pristine waters with old shipwrecks as well as reefs. Palaster reef is a well known tourist attraction on Barbuda, which is located near to Spanish Point; it is illegal to shoot fish there but snorkelling, scuba and deep sea diving is allowed.

Coconut Plantation Take a trip to Barbuda’s Coconut Plantation. The 250 acres of endless coconut trees can be seen on your way out of Codrington to River Wharf, but the best way to appreciate the naturalness of it, is by a helicopter tour of Barbuda.

Indian cave Situated in the Two Foot Bay National Park is the one of the most interesting prehistoric sites in Barbuda. Indian Cave is where the two small Amerindian rock carvings (pertroglyphs) can be seen. Indian cave is small and compact, giving a mysterious feeling; it is not difficult to imagine the Amerindians who lived there long ago. The cave overlooks the north-eastern windward coast which was a lookout site for the Amerindians.

Holy Trinity Anglican Church It is the oldest church to be established in Barbuda and was built in 1844 during the days of slavery. The Anglican Church is open daily for sightseeing and you are invited to the Sunday Holy Eucharist at 9:30am with Sunday school at 3pm. The Ginnery This is where salt and cotton was stored from the days of slavery into the 1900’s. The salt was coated on the walls 10 years ago and one could see dates and quantities stencilled on the beams. Today, the ginnery is used as the local government’s council hall. The Ginnery is located on Ginnery Street in the Capital, Codrington.

Darby cave A 45 minutes hike from the Highlands ruin also known as “Willy Bob” will take you to one of the most exciting and adventurous caves in Barbuda. On your way you might just happen to run into land turtles, deer, guinea hens and other birds. Darby Cave, better known as “The Sink Hole” is a great wonder of the Caribbean, located on the northern side of the island. Some 400ft long and 85ft deep, it is known for its lush vegetation and self contained eco-system. As you climb down, you will discover the water falling from above called “The Silaga” and a variety of birds and fauna, enjoying this undisturbed paradise. Dark Cave Dark Cave is two miles to the south of Darby Cave. The cave has a narrow entrance leading to a vast cavern containing pools of water, which were probably a water source for Amerindian inhabitants as a variety of artefacts have been found nearby. Dark Cave is the habitat for several rare species of crustaceans, including the blind shrimp.

Turquoise Beaches 42

Barbuda, caressed by sparkling turquoise waters and magnificent stretches of gorgeous creamy-pink and white sand beaches, are known to be amongst the best in the world. The stunning pink sand beach, recognised internationally, has been featured by Conde’ Nast Traveller’s as the world’s best beach and has been singled out as one of the best remote beaches around the world by Travel AOL. The beaches in Barbuda are usually unpopulated making it a romantic or a family getaway setting. All beaches are simply breathtaking but the best ones to visit are the ones listed for you as they are also great for diving, snorkelling, fishing, bird watching, beach cricket, picnics, and of course, an escape from the everyday life. Most of the beaches have no facilities so it is important to remember to take water and shade or find a place to keep

out of the sun for some of the time. In some places when you have seen one beach you have seen them all, but in Barbuda each one is different, better than the last and interesting enough to keep even the most cynical holidaymaker happy for hours. The beaches can have dangerous currents at certain times of the year but there are also areas which are perfect for children or non-swimmers, with shallow water and rock pools filled with tiny fish and crabs. There are aerial displays provided by pelicans diving close to the beach and everywhere you swim you will see fish darting about in the water. On holiday weekends the beaches are filled up by the locals who take picnics very seriously and bring loud music, food and truck loads of people to spend the day in the sea.  continued on page 44

Visitors usually make this beach a first choice for excursions because of its historical appeal and the naturalness that surrounds the beach.

This quiet white sandy beach is a visitors’ paradise and is ideal for swimming, bird watching and snorkelling. Activities and Adventures

If you are a discerning traveller, interested in nature based activities, and for whom the total experience of a destination is top priority, then Barbuda is a must for your next trip. It is the ideal place if you want to sample something new and out of the ordinary. Barbuda does not offer the ‘big city’, type of activities characteristic of the typical destination. Instead, everything canters around the natural world and there are quite a number of activities and adventures to choose from.

Beautiful Barbuda 5th Anniversary Edition 2013 www.beautifulbarbuda.com

Activities and Adventures Nature Tours & Hiking Barbuda’s landscape offers good terrain for the novice or more experienced hiker. A hike to Darby Cave from the highland House Ruin will take 45 minutes. Trails usually have canopy cover and are quite pleasant to walk. It is not uncommon to see tracks from wild boar, deer and donkeys, but sighting of animals are rare. Ask the locals for trail direction or a guide, they are always too willing to help.

Snorkel Spanish Point is an excellent location for snorkelling because of its proximity to a spectacular reef. The Codrington Lagoon is also a great venue for this adventure. You can find numerous marine species including the famous Caribbean spiny lobster; Barbuda’s signature export. Other great spots can be used for snorkelling but advice should be taken before you explore.

Activities and Adventures Kite Surf It is highly unlikely that you can have a day at the beach without the steady trade winds blowing across the island. An activity akin to windsurfing, kite surfing involves the use of a kite steered by two tethers while attempting to surf the waves – almost a marriage between surfing and parasailing. Barbuda is an ideal location to engage in this activity, with surf that is neither too powerful nor too calm.

Sail Away to Barbuda ...A Sailor’s Paradise 52

All too often the word 'paradise' is used in connection with holiday destinations, not just in the Caribbean but the world over. It has become one of the most abused words when used to describe palm fringed sandy beaches. If only there were so many paradises worldwide. In reality, they are few and far between and 'paradise' often comprises what you make of your holiday destination but, just sometimes, the destination itself has a head start. If your idea of 'paradise' is an isolated tropical island where civilization is just close enough to supply all your needs but not close enough to be intrusive, together with peaceful,

lazy days only interrupted by the soft rustle of the gentle surf on a pink sand beach, a cocktail in hand, then Barbuda is your destination. Only really discovered by yachtsmen and a few more knowledgeable travellers, Barbuda is the ultimate 'get away from it all' holiday destination. When arriving by yacht, the best place to anchor is outside the lagoon off Codrington, on Barbuda's west side. There are other places where anchoring is possible but the dozens of wrecks around this island bears testimony to the number of reefs on the south and east sides. With care and when the sun is high in the sky to avoid reflections off the water, it is possible to navigate through the reefs to find both sound anchoring and

exciting snorkelling. A good chart and a member of crew on the bow is essential if you are going to venture inside the reefs but the effort could be worth it. You will probably find you are the only ones there. Ashore there is limited provisioning but quite a large range of restaurants for those not wishing to cater on board. Menus vary from haute cuisine to local fare and, for the more adventurous; the fishermen will sell you part of their daily catch, including lobster, which can be barbecued on the beach. There are a few sights on the island for those who wish to intersperse relaxing on the beach with a little activity. On the north of the island are a number of limestone caves

some of which house a unique blind shrimp. Nearby is a large frigate bird sanctuary which, ornithologist or not, you cannot avoid being fascinated by these magnificent birds and, for those familiar with the south east of England, Barbuda has its own Martello Tower. Barbuda is one of those sailing destinations which need to be visited before everyone finds out that it is there.

Shopping

54

There are several small, cosy shops in and around Codrington, where you can hop in and pick up the essential things that you may need to make your vacation a worthwhile one. From sunscreen lotion to locally made hand craft products, you are sure to find in Barbuda. Variety stores selling all kinds of essential household items and clothes, many of them have gifts and T-Shirts are available. All supplies come by boat or by plane from various places via Antigua. The best time to look for fruit and vegetables is when the boat comes in on Friday or Saturday. Many people sell their own produce at different times throughout the year and this is when the best organically grown produce is available. Fish can be purchased at the Codrington Fisheries daily and locally produced meat is often for sale around the village. Some shops in Codrington do not accept credit cards; however, money could be obtained from the ACB Bank’s ATM located on Mission and Airport Road. Duty-free shopping is not available. If you have intentions of shopping duty free, you can do so on your way to and from the V. C. Bird International Airport or just enjoy a day of shopping at Historic Redcliffe Quay and Heritage Quay in downtown St. John’s in Antigua.

Barbuda’s Roadside Cook-up’s

written by Chef and Presenter Philman George, The Rhyming Chef | www.therhymingchef.com

58

A visit to Barbuda is always magical and whether you stay for the day or several you are bound to be in awe of the splendour, the remoteness and the courteous community. The beauty of Barbuda is its unique, unspoiled landscape. It is renowned for its natural coral beaches that stretch for endless powdery miles, highlighted with a generous sprinkling of pink sand. Barbuda is home to the largest breeding colony of frigate birds in the western hemisphere. There is lots of adventure to be had on the (not so) sleepy island; take your pick from diving, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. You can of course not go in search of adventure and just relax into the easygoing way of life. But however you choose to spend your time here, you cannot leave Barbuda until you’ve experienced some of the local cuisine. Every Saturday morning, Barbuda comes alive with their infamous roadside fish fry. Just sniff it out – the air is thick with the pungent aromas of frying fish. When you find a stall select your own marinated fish out of an assortment of locally caught varieties from the iced cooler box. Then, grab yourself a Wadadli beer or fresh fruit

juice and hang out with the locals while your fish is being fried right in front of your eyes. Don’t forget to order a homemade dumpling (baked or fried), for a perfect accompaniment to your freshly fried fish. Still hungry? How about a local breakfast? There is always lots to choose from on the menu, from traditionally prepared ling fish (salt fish) to mackerel and chop-up made with spinach, okra and antrover or anchoba (stewed eggplant), depending on how you want to pronounce it. There’s also fresh fruit, avocado pear, pumpkin fritters, green salad, fried plantain, boiled eggs and sausages to sample. As you can see, Barbudans like to choose from a great array of dishes at breakfast time. The same can be said for lunch. A roadside feast of baked or stewed chicken, okra fungi, spare ribs, boiled green banana, potato salad, coleslaw, rice and peas, lasagna, macaroni pie, curry goat, conch water, and stewed land turtle are just a few of the dishes you can pile on your plate. Don’t forget to ask about my favourite side dish, ducana – sweet potatoes grated with coconut and spices such as nutmeg and

Beautiful Barbuda 5th Anniversary Edition 2013 www.beautifulbarbuda.com

cinnamon and then boiled in banana leaf to form a savoury dumpling. After lunch the best thing to do is have a siesta on the beach and dream about what could possibly be on the evening menu. But, if you have time and space left in your belly try and fit in a quick afternoon snack; look out for locally made bread pudding, meatballs and patties. Night-time is the right time for a light bite. Stroll into the heart of Codrington Village and follow your nose to the nearest charcoal grill. You can find everything from simple beef burgers to jerk chicken or pork and grilled lobster. You’ll also find homemade pizzas. As I documented the goings on of Barbuda’s roadside cook-ups, I couldn’t help but notice that the vendors were mainly mothers and grandmothers. Maybe this is why the food tastes so good. The love and care that goes into raising a family is the same love and care that goes into preparing each meal. It’s truly the best way - to eat like a local, as these roadside cook-ups cater to the taste buds of Barbudans. Whatever the dish, you can be guaranteed that it will be full of freshness, flavour and love!
