Mosquitoes & Sandflies Though they can be bothersome, mosquitoes in Antigua and Barbuda have little chance of infecting their victims, though the rare dengue fever infection has been reported a few times in Antigua. The biggest concern may be the swelling and itching that would result from being bitten, as is the case with the sand fly, which becomes more of an irritation after a dip in the ocean. It is recommended that you bring along some sort of bug repellent, such as those containing DEET, or even citronella candles if you plan on staying overnight.

Barbuda,

a Nature Lover’s Paradise by Fransene Massiah-Headley

SHH! Listen! Its nature’s whisper slowly edging itself above the crystal-clear melodies pouring forth, seemingly without end from Barbuda, a Nature Lover’s Paradise. Cradled on its limestone bed in the heart of Caribbean Sea is 62 square miles of amazing nature’s reserve, inclusive of a great variety of animal and plant life. This cavernous island underground temple-like structure of miles and miles of stalagmites and stalactites are natural canvases for ancient petro glyphs carved by Arawak Indians. This island delight may be relatively small, but its climate and landscape make it a haven for flora and fauna. The animals can be observed in their natural setting. They include iguanas, wild asses, horses, wild boar, guinea birds, wild ducks, land turtles and fallow deer with their beautifully shaped horns. To see firsthand the wild boars cavorting under the trees,

Beautiful Barbuda | 6th Edition 2014

and wild deer frolicking between the shadows of the bushes is to comprehend the exceptional variety and beauty unique only to Barbuda. Though its woodlands are mostly shrubby, Barbuda boasts of towering palm trees that intermittently grace the shoreline of its renowned pink sandy beaches. On occasion, the huge coconut, mango, tamarind and neem trees form a beautiful milieu to the colourful Caribbean style homes. It is also between the branches of these and other fruit trees that many tropical birds congregate. To observe local bird life in their natural surroundings, a simple bird feeder in ones backyard, placed within range of a window, a pair of binoculars and a camera with a good zoom lens—and a little patience is all you need. In Barbuda tropical plants and desert cacti bloom serene and dignified like the Batta Log (Agave Karatto) –standing majestically

21 with its golden floral crown. Plants such as the hibiscus, allamanda and bougainvillea flowers attract hummingbirds and a host of butterflies. After a down pour wild tulips habitually carpets the ground with tiny yellow stars while the fresh scent of wild herbs locally called ‘cattle tongue’ and ‘nou nou’ perfumes the air. This island reserve also includes a strip of mangrove forest along the coast. Since there is no industrial or agricultural runoff the mangroves are healthy, providing an ideal breeding area for many fish that populate the coral reefs. Bordering this Mangrove forest is a stretch of unspoiled coastline, where the hawks bill turtles and leatherback turtles come to lay their eggs. Its coastal reserve hosts magnificent coral reefs that trimmed all around the island with diverse aquatic life. From beneath the crystal clear blue waters the reefs teem with life. These well preserved underwater gardens provide a wonderful display for divers, many having come faceto-face with turtles, harmless barracuda, lobsters, and thousands of fish with brilliant colours. They can be photographed by any trusted underwater explorer coerce by its inhabitants to leave nature intact.

beyond its shallow coral reefs, where the water runs clear, then suddenly deep blue, hiding tremendous natural treasures just for you to find. For bird lovers, The Bird Sanctuary Reserve “is a bird-watchers’’ paradise, for watching the masses of frigate birds migrating between the Galápagos Islands and Barbuda for mating. The male frigate birds original compositions of melodious outpourings keep listeners spellbound with the drumming of their brightly red chest. Surely they go far beyond the few simple notes needed to declare territorial claim in their elaborate courtship. It is for their pleasure and every visitor alike.

No other place on earth has the mystery of the deep sea like Barbuda. The other almost 170 species of birds fortunate to share this reserve are no less amazing. Mated pairs sing duets, as do other tropical bird pairs. Their performances are unique. These beautiful, soft musical dialogues compel the listeners to stay and lounge among the pelicans, tropical mockingbirds, warblers, ibis, herons, king fisher’s and snipes.

In addition there is a vast amount of ship wrecks lying virtually untouched just waiting to be explored. The wrecks lay encrusted in coral, serving as undersea mansions for countless fish.

Truth be told, any ornithologist would be spoilt in Barbuda.

No other place on earth has the mystery of the deep sea like Barbuda. Stir your imagination by diving or snorkeling out

It’s well worth making the trip yourself.

Take a hint from the magnificent Frigate and travel to Barbuda, a Nature Lover’s Paradise.

Our History Barbuda’s indigenous name, Wa’omoni was given by the original native; the Amerindians. But this island has evolved over the centuries during which most of its original culture was lost in history but then replaced by a new group of settlers who had forcibly taken to Barbuda, now the African slaves. Barbuda along with its neighbour Antigua was at first over looked by the first wave of European settlers. But by the early 1600, attempts were made by both the British and the French to occupy the island, but their efforts failed and it wasn’t until the mid 1600, 1666 to be exact, did the British accomplish this feat. However, it was not without challenges as the colonists had to be able to withstand the pressure of nature and the original natives, the Amerindians, who fought to death to keep the British off their land. By the late 1685, brothers Sir Christopher and John Codrington in exchange of one fat sheep on demand, were approved and secured a 50 year lease of Barbuda from the British Monarch to provide food for the slaves of their sugar plantations in Antigua. But notwithstanding this, the owners recognized that the slaves in Barbuda were exceptionally tall and very strong men and women, this, was where the idea was conceived that the island would also serve as a breeding ground for the provision of slave men and women for their plantations throughout the region. In addition to Barbuda being a hidden goldmine for the lease holders, the Codrington’s fortune continued to grow

but not only from the profits of King Sugar. For as long as this island erupted into life, its’ been known for is very rich marine life, a fact attributed to the coral reefs that surround this small island more so on the north eastern coastline where the Atlantic Ocean washes ashore. During these earlier years this fact was not known to the Europeans who navigated down to the west without the use of modern day equipment, to safely dock them at their destination ports. For this, Barbuda became infamous, because of these reefs ships carrying precious cargo of supplies and other valuables met their demise within less than half a mile off the island. The Codringtons benefited tremendously from the ship owners many misfortunes. They were then given subsequent leases awarding them additional rights to the abundant wreckage along the reefs. Walking along the eastern coastline today you may still find some remains from these wrecks dating back to the 1600’s. Most of what you may find is antique bottles of different shapes, sizes and colours and ancient chinaware some centuries old. Snorkelling along the reefs is a sure eye opener to under water enthusiasts, where you can definitely see the skeletal remains of some of these old ships. This family, the Codrington, became the islands’ most prominent family for much of the eighteenth century, hence the naming of Barbuda’s capital, Codrington. The structural remains of the Codrington estate can still be explored on Barbuda’s highest point; Highland Hills.

Our People Barbudans, Guardians and caretakers of 62 square miles of nature’s playground, have made an unwavering effort to conserve their inheritance. A community of expert fishermen and divers have fashioned a delectable sea food cuisine culture fit for royals. The seasonal catch of deer, wild boar, land-turtle and crab makes the traditional Barbudan dishes a pleasurable delicacy. Our big-hearted island people are thrilled to share the experiences of the world’s best known deserted, pink, sandy beaches and the Bird Sanctuary -the Caribbean’s largest frigate bird nesting colony- with the world. The close knit family atmosphere is evident in the intimate village life. This relaxed disposition and friendliness of the islanders made it a favourite of the world’s most famous princess, Princess Diana Not to be missed is the prevailing warm hospitality that is extended to visitors who are left to explore the imitable island in the solitude they so desire. Keepers of nature’s paradise entreat you to take pleasure in our well preserved heritage- Barbuda.

Barbuda, caressed by sparkling turquoise waters and magnificent stretches of gorgeous creamypink and white sand beaches, are known to be amongst the best in the world. The stunning pink sand beach, recognised internationally, has been featured by Conde’ Nast Traveller’s as the world’s best beach and has been singled out as one of the best remote beaches around the world by Travel AOL.

Turquoise Beaches

The beaches in Barbuda are usually unpopulated making it a romantic or a family getaway setting. All beaches are simply breathtaking but the best ones to visit are the ones listed for you as they are also great for diving, snorkelling, fishing, bird watching, beach cricket, picnics, and of course, an escape from the everyday life. Most of the beaches have no facilities so it is important to remember to take water and shade or find a place to keep out of the sun for some of the time. In some places when you have seen one beach you have seen them all, but in Barbuda each one is different, better than the last and interesting enough to keep even the most cynical holidaymaker happy for hours. The beaches can have dangerous currents at certain times of the year but there are also areas which are perfect for children or non-swimmers, with shallow water and rock pools filled with tiny fish and crabs. There are aerial displays provided by pelicans diving close to the beach and everywhere you swim you will see fish darting about in the water. On holiday weekends the beaches are filled up by the locals who take picnics very seriously and bring loud music, food and truck loads of people to spend the day in the sea.

Barbuda’s Caribana One of the greatest whit-weekend festivals in the Caribbean is the annual Barbuda carnival known as Caribana. This festival showcases Barbuda’s talent, cuisine, lifestyle, people and most of all, the island’s rich and diverse culture. Over the past five years, the festival has grown and has been getting somewhat popular as thousands of visitors and locals alike flocked to the island where they were spoiled for choice during the 2012 Caribana festivities.

37 The second day was the Beach Bash which took place on the famous Pink Sand Beach. The afternoon was relaxed and full of fun with dance competitions that were so fierce that even some of the spectators became contestants. The evening was all about the premiere of the Big Bold, and Beautiful Pageant which replaced the traditional Caribana Queen Pageant. The night celebrated Cynthia Yearwood winning first place and Hildena Gore coming in at second place.

The local festival exhibited a choice of lobster, crab and many more mouthwatering delights while the cultural celebration stimulated not only the taste buds, but also the ears with music from live bands and sounds of the latest soca and calypso from the season to arouse the party animal in the participants and revelers alike. The activities began on the first day with the opening parade which showcased costumes and geared the spectators for what to expect over the next few days. The evening was host to the Teen Splash where the audience was captivated by Shaznia Beazer who took first place shot, while Marina Walker and Lesha Williams took the second and third place respectively.

On day three, the Cornation Park was full of energy as the horse racing took place and kept spectators entertained until the early evening. The Calypso Monarch Show took over where the horse racing left off and local artist Janice ‘Stabba’ Welch captivated the audience and won the competition with her performance of her song, “Since Independence.” Day four (Whit-Monday) marked the end of Caribana, but not before J’ouvert and Last Lap where the streets of Codrington were heaving with throngs of islanders and visitors celebrating, smiling and dancing. Every aspect of the festival, from the food, music, pageants, local games and activities capture the audience and increase the energetic atmosphere and historical tradition that is Caribana – our culture.

Living the Dream

39

by James & Wendy Ulik

We first heard of Barbuda some 25 years ago when it was featured on a popular television travel show called Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous. Though we would travel to the Caribbean many times over the following years, Barbuda remained a vision, a dream to be realized someday. Someday finally came when we realized another dream of sailing from the U.S. to the Caribbean. We had been slowly exploring the islands of the Caribbean, loving the beauty and diversity of each place we visited. When we sailed from Antigua, Barbuda first appeared on the horizon as if it were a mirage. Palm trees seemed to be growing from the ocean! As we sailed closer, land appeared. We could hardly contain our excitement! Would the reality live up to our vision? The unspoiled beaches were still there. Some of them were

pink! We walked the beaches for miles, completely alone. The water is hard to describe. How many shades of blue are there? There were coral reefs just waiting for us to explore. A guide took us to see the Frigate birds in their nesting site among the mangroves. We hiked to ancient caves and dined on freshly caught lobster. The people were wonderful, smiling and greeting us, proud and protective of their beautiful island. At sunset, while we were enjoying the beauty that surrounded us, a small herd of horses wandered out of the bushes and headed off down the beach. When people dream of the Caribbean, they picture themselves on a pristine, unpopulated beach with nothing but waves lapping on the shore, the sounds of the sea birds, the beauty and the solitude. The reality is there aren't too many places left like that. We found all of that in Barbuda. Our dream was realized. Barbuda exceeded the vision we had carried in our head for all those years. When we sailed off, we vowed to return.

PHOTOGRAPHS by James Ulik

We had a vision of the perfect island. The vision was of long stretches of un-spoiled beaches, turquoise water, gentle breezes, star filled nights, peacefulness and tranquility. Then suddenly that vision had a name-Barbuda.

a d u b r a B Explore A visit to Barbuda would not be complete without discovering these natural treasures, hire a vehicle or hop on a water taxi if you have to, but make sure you explore Barbuda...

Two Foot Bay National Park This National Park was used for shelter by the Amerindians who used the caves. The presence of the old stone ruins and the well indicates that it was used in the colonial period. It was also used during the Codrington tenure for the mining of phosphate as evidenced by the phosphate caves. Today, most Barbudans use this national park as a camp site. It is also where you can find Gun Shop Cliff and Barbuda’s remarkable caves.

The Frigate Bird Sanctuary Experience one of the greatest natural wonders of the world – the frigate bird sanctuary which is home to approximately 5000 spectacular sea-birds. Frigate Birds are an endangered species. These Birds are located in the Codrington Lagoon on the northwest coast of Barbuda which is only accessible by water taxi. Since the lagoon is a fantastic place to observe and photograph the frigate birds, be respectful – don’t pressure your guide to go closer than the boundary marker. If you go too close to a nest and an adult leaves, its nest could be destroyed. Enjoy your visit to the sanctuary and help us to keep it a safe place for frigate birds to breed.

Highland House Situated in the north-eastern area of Barbuda is Highland House Ruin. Now in ruins, the house was built around 1720 and was used as a retreat for the Codrington family whenever they were on island. It was a large complex of buildings, including slave quarters, stables, offices and cisterns offering a beautiful view.

Spanish Point Situated on a hilltop in the south-eastern area of Barbuda is Spanish Point. This limestone outcrop provides a clear view in all directions and is an ideal observation point. The area was used as a defence point during the colonial period whereby a structure was in place to store all weapons to fight its enemies.

Palaster Reef Palaster reef is a marine reserve in pristine waters with old shipwrecks as well as reefs. Palaster reef is a well known tourist attraction on Barbuda, which is located near to Spanish Point; it is illegal to shoot fish there but snorkelling, scuba and deep sea diving is allowed.

The salt was coated on the walls 10 years ago and one could see dates and quantities stencilled on the beams. Today, the ginnery is used as the local government’s council hall. The Ginnery is located on Ginnery Street in the Capital, Codrington.

A photo exhibit with work from the local high school students features modern concerns about climate change. In the children's space young visitors can have a great time with lots of hands on activities that help them explore the environment, ethnography and archaeology of Barbuda. The space features an observation beehive, a solar system, an archaeology exploration corner, travel and fishing in a mangrove and "living from the land" where youngsters can pretend cook and play in a cave site.

The Caves Indian cave Situated in the Two Foot Bay National Park is the one of the most interesting prehistoric sites in Barbuda. Indian Cave is where the two small Amerindian rock carvings (pertroglyphs) can be seen. Indian cave is small and compact, giving a mysterious feeling; it is not difficult to imagine the Amerindians who lived there long ago. The cave overlooks the north-eastern windward coast which was a lookout site for the Amerindians. Darby Cave A 45 minutes hike from the Highlands ruin also known as “Willy Bob” will take you to one of the most exciting and adventurous caves in Barbuda. On your way you might just happen to run into land turtles, deer, guinea hens and other birds. Darby Cave,

better known as “The Sink Hole” is a great wonder of the Caribbean, located on the northern side of the island. Some 400ft long and 85ft deep, it is known for its lush vegetation and self contained eco-system. As you climb down, you will discover the water falling from above called “The Silaga” and a variety of birds and fauna, enjoying this undisturbed paradise. Dark Cave Dark Cave is two miles to the south of Darby Cave. The cave has a narrow entrance leading to a vast cavern containing pools of water, which were probably a water source for Amerindian inhabitants as a variety of artefacts have been found nearby. Dark Cave is the habitat for several rare species of crustaceans, including the blind shrimp www.beautifulbarbuda.com

Bird watching by Sarah Trefry

Another splendid reason to visit Barbuda is to see the birds. Taking a stroll around Codrington Village, look for the Zenaida Dove, American Kestrel, Grey Kingbird, and the yellowbellied and squeaky-voiced Bananaquit.

Beautiful Barbuda | 6th Edition 2014

47 Just outside of the village, you can easily spot the silky black Carib Grackle, Whitecrowned Pigeon, and two hummingbird species; the smaller Antillen Crested Hummingbird, and the Green-throated Carib with a down-curved bill. In the summer, black-headed Laughing Gulls are common. Wandering the many paths through the vegetation on Barbuda with binoculars, it is also possible to see Yellow Warblers and the famous Barbuda Warbler, with a grey back and yellow belly, found nowhere else in the world. Any visitor to Barbuda would be remiss in not taking a short boat trip with a tour guide to Codrington Lagoon National Park, which harbours’ the largest Caribbean colony of Magnificent Frigate birds. Here, in the fall and winter, hundreds of frigate birds (also known as Man-O-War) can be viewed going about their breeding cycle: the glossy black males with inflated red throat pouches perch on a mangrove and clack their bills, which resonates through the inflated balloon and makes a drum-like sound, in an attempt to attract a choosy female to be his mate for the season. The females, larger than the males and dark brown with white bellies, fly overhead to assess potential mates. Once paired, males will collect sticks, which females use to carefully fashion into nests. Sticks are highly contested, and many aerial chases involving multiple males take place between September and December. Because breeding in the colony is very asynchronous, throughout the year nests in all stages can be seen – from nest construction to downy chicks.

Alongside the frigate birds, one can also see another seabird, the Brown Booby, perched on dead snags amongst the mangroves. Also keep an eye out for bright Yellow Warblers darting between the mangroves, Common Moorhen, and Black-necked Stilts – elegant black and white birds with long red legs. Codrington Lagoon has been declared a Ramsar site and an important bird area. Therefore, it is important to maintain a respectful distance from frigate birds and other species you observe in the lagoon. Another National Park that is home to many bird species is Two-Foot Bay. Here, limestone cliffs perched between the Atlantic and the Caribbean provide nesting sites for the stunning Red-billed Tropicbirds, which stream from the cliffs to take courtship flights over the sea. From Darby’s Cave, one may also catch a glimpse of a Scaly-breasted Thrasher. The ponds here and elsewhere on the island are home to Blue-winged Teal and White-cheeked Pintail. Many birders hope to catch a glimpse in the evenings of the Vulnerable West Indian Whistling duck, either on one of Barbuda’s ponds or in Codrington Lagoon. One of the splendors of Barbuda is the beautiful beaches, running the length of the island. These are wonderful swimming spots, but also are a great location to take in the bird life: Brown Pelicans and Caspian Terns plunge into the sea for fish, which may attract Magnificent Frigate birds to investigate and possibly try to steal a meal. Barbuda is a wonderful location to bring your camera and binoculars, and with the island’s rich bird life you are sure to see something new!

Activities and Adventures

Beautiful Barbuda | 6th Edition 2014

49 If you are a discerning traveller, interested in nature based activities, and for whom the total experience of a destination is top priority, then Barbuda is a must for your next trip. It is the ideal place if you want to sample something new and out of the ordinary. Barbuda does not offer the 'big city', type of activities characteristic of the typical destination. Instead, everything canters around the natural world and there are quite a number of activities and adventures to choose from.

SNORKEL Spanish Point is an excellent location for snorkelling because of its proximity to a spectacular reef. The Codrington Lagoon is also a great venue for this adventure. You can find numerous marine species including the famous Caribbean spiny lobster; Barbuda’s signature export. Other great spots can be used for snorkelling but advice should be taken before you explore.

NATURE TOURS & HIKING Barbuda’s landscape offers good terrain for the novice or more experienced hiker. A hike to Darby Cave from the highland House Ruin will take 45 minutes. Trails usually have canopy cover and are quite pleasant to walk. It is not uncommon to see tracks from wild boar, deer and donkeys, but sighting of animals are rare. Ask the locals for trail direction or a guide, they are always too willing to help.

50 WINDSURF Windsurfing is a blast in the warm tropical sun while catching a wave on either coast of Barbuda. The island is almost completely surrounded by shoals and reefs, so the waves are entirely manageable for those who are sufficiently experienced with the activity. The first rule of safety in all cases is, of course, to inform the relevant persons of the place of the activities you will be engaging in.

FISHING Fishing is a popular pleasure activity on Barbuda. If not all, most of the island fisherman and woman go fishing at sea or in the lagoon. Traditionally, fishing is done using fish pots which are made from locally gathered wattle sticks and wire. Visitors can do fishing trips in Barbuda since many of the locals have boats and would gladly bring you along. Barracuda, shark, tuna and other types of fish such as Grunt, Old Wife, and Snapper are easy to catch. Lobster is also relatively easy as they are a specialty of the island and can be caught by hand or in uniquely crafted fish pots. Fishing and diving in Barbuda waters can be hazardous as the sea can be rough with strong currents. Please ensure that you have the relevant experience and properly maintained equipment before you go. No licence is required when fishing for pleasure; however, it can only be done from a Barbuda-owned boat.

DIVING Diving in Barbuda’s water is an experience not to be missed, with colourful fish, spectacular reefs, abundance in sea turtles and, of course, over 200 shipwrecks from different periods in the island’s history, all waiting to be discovered. There are experienced divers who can guide you and it is possible to rent scuba diving equipment.

KITE SURF It is highly unlikely that you can have a day at the beach without the steady trade winds blowing across the island. An activity akin to windsurfing, kite surfing involves the use of a kite steered by two tethers while attempting to surf the waves – almost a marriage between surfing and parasailing. Barbuda is an ideal location to engage in this activity, with surf that is neither too powerful nor too calm.

PARA-SAILING With the aid of a powerboat, you can have the opportunity to see the island from a perspective that relatively few ever see it – high above the waves being propelled through the air, looking above the coconut palms and seeing for miles across the island that is nearly completely flat.

KAYAKING Kayaking is best done within the confines of the Codrington Lagoon or on the sheltered western side of the island, though those more adept and experienced in the activity may be better able to manage the surf within landward side of the eastern reefs. Imagine a breathtaking Caribbean sunset while paddling along the deserted coastline.

52 BEACH PICNIC Take a trip to one of Barbuda’s secluded beaches and enjoy a day picnic (see beaches on page 36). If you’re looking for the best secluded beach, Billy Point and Palmetto Point are perfect for you or if you’re looking for one with a bar close by then take the trip over to either Low Bay, Coral Group or River Beach.

HORSE RACING Horse racing is a bi-monthly sporting event where you will find some of the best and fastest horses on track at Connation Park in Codringtion. The islanders go out to support their favourite horse and place bets. So come and join the action. Admission is only EC$5 or US$2.

HORSE BACK RIDING With most of the island being virtually deserted, a horseback ride along the stunning coast might just be the perfect ending to a day in Barbuda. Imagine you riding along a grassy clearing and seeing a deer stag emerging from the thick bush... the only place in the Caribbean where this is possible.

CAMPING Barbuda is populated by only about fifteen hundred persons, living almost exclusively in Codrington village, so it is rather easy to find a quiet, private location to camp out with friends and family. We suggest camping near to one of our lovely beaches. To arrange activities and adventures, visit the local tourist office on Ginnery Street in Codringtion or call 268.562.7065 or 268.562.7066

Sail Away to Barbuda ...A Sailors’ Paradise All too often the word ‘paradise’ is used in connection with holiday destinations, not just in the Caribbean but the world over. It has become one of the most abused words when used to describe palm fringed sandy beaches. If only there were so many paradises worldwide. In reality, they are few and far between and 'paradise' often comprises what you make of your holiday destination but, just sometimes, the destination itself has a head start. If your idea of 'paradise' is an isolated tropical island where civilization is just close enough to supply all your needs but not close enough to be intrusive, together with peaceful, lazy days only interrupted by the soft rustle of the gentle surf on a pink sand beach, a cocktail in hand, then Barbuda is your destination. Only really discovered by yachtsmen and a few more knowledgeable travellers, Barbuda is the ultimate 'get away from it all' holiday destination. When arriving by yacht, the best place to anchor is outside the lagoon off Codrington, on Barbuda's west side. There are other places where anchoring is possible but the dozens of wrecks around this island bears testimony to the number of reefs on the south and east sides. With care and when the sun is high in the sky to avoid reflections

off the water, it is possible to navigate through the reefs to find both sound anchoring and exciting snorkelling. A good chart and a member of crew on the bow is essential if you are going to venture inside the reefs but the effort could be worth it. You will probably find you are the only ones there. Ashore there is limited provisioning but quite a large range of restaurants for those not wishing to cater on board. Menus vary from haute cuisine to local fare and, for the more adventurous; the fishermen will sell you part of their daily catch, including lobster, which can be barbecued on the beach. There are a few sights on the island for those who wish to intersperse relaxing on the beach with a little activity. On the north of the island are a number of limestone caves some of which house a unique blind shrimp. Nearby is a large frigate bird sanctuary which, ornithologist or not, you cannot avoid being fascinated by these magnificent birds and, for those familiar with the south east of England, Barbuda has its own Martello Tower. Barbuda is one of those sailing destinations which need to be visited before everyone finds out that it is there.

Cruise Tourism

Cruise Tourism in Antigua & Barbuda continues to be a major economic factor due to the efforts of the Antigua & Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association (ABCTA) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, the Antigua Pier Group and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority.

The smaller cruise lines have started to make calls to Barbuda since the early 90’s with the most prominent being the Club Med Cruise. Since then, there has been a steady interest in Barbuda by most of the smaller cruise lines due to the prompting of the Cruise Officials.

Antigua as the larger of the twin island state is the major beneficiary of the cruise tourism product with over three hundred cruise ship calls on an annually bias while; Barbuda on the other hand is viewed as one of the untouched, unspoilt jewels of the Caribbean.

At cruise trade shows, cruise officials have been pushing Barbuda as a stopover call for the smaller cruise vessels. Mr. Dundas stated “It is important we keep the numbers of passengers visiting within the 100 – 150 capacity vessels with a maximum of a 200 passenger’s vessel as the most we can allow to call to Barbuda.”

There has been a special effort to encourage cruise vessels to call in Barbuda by the cruise tourism officials under the leadership of Mr. Nathan Dundas; President of the ABCTA. According to the ABCTA President, “Barbuda is a very special place and we have to preserve its beauty and its blessed environment, so we do not market or encourage any large cruise vessels to call to Barbuda.”

Beautiful Barbuda | 6th Edition 2014

The Cruise Association boss has been able to arrange a number of Cruise Lines executives to visit and meet with the Tourism interests and Council members in Barbuda and visit the various sites. Among the smaller Cruise Lines that have made visits are: Vice President of Windstar Cruises; Mr. Sander Groothuis, former Vice President of Fred

57 Olsen Cruises; Mr. Matt Grimes, and Vice President of Club Med; Miss Anne Surat. Mr. Nathan Dundas has indicated that he is very happy that the Government of Antigua & Barbuda has also seen the need to ensure that Barbuda benefits from the cruise tourism product and has thanked the Government for including Barbuda in the Cruise Tourism Incentive package as part of the benefit for the Cruise Lines if they make Barbuda the next second port of call on the following day after calling Antigua first. According to Mr. Dundas, this inactive has already started reaping dividends with this current season a new Cruise Line, the La PONANT making already three (3) calls to Barbuda. Mr. Dundas believes that Barbuda potential is great and is set to take off with even more Cruise ships calling to enjoy arguably the best beaches in the Caribbean, he however is of the view that there are some necessary things that need to be done urgently in Barbuda foremost among these is, the building of a ferry or small cruise landing dock. “There are some ships that can land their beach tenders directly on the beach and that is fine, but there are also some ships that

would prefer to land their passengers on a dock or a pier and this cannot be done at present due to a lack of facility.” “I believe there should be a strong will by the Government of Antigua & Barbuda to ensure that Barbuda gets such a dock and there will be even more economic activity for the Island”, stated Mr. Dundas.

Barbuda is a very special place and we have to preserve its beauty and its blessed environment, so we do not market or encourage any large cruise vessels to call to Barbuda The Cruise Association boss also believes that Barbuda should have a focus group working on strategizing specifically with the Cruise product in mind and creating brochures highlighting the uniqueness of Barbuda with a Cruise tourism theme which would include anchorage position for vessels and other relevant information for the crew and passengers of the cruise ships. According to President of the ABCTA; Nathan Dundas, “It is important that we continue to position ourselves to capitalize and benefit from this dynamic Industry.”
