t’s been a busy start to the year with the launch of the Beauty Book and visiting trade shows in both the UK and Ireland. After a very long and very cold winter, summer is finally here and in our industry that means a few visits to the salon. Waxing, tanning, pedicures, perfect pinkies, eye tinting… we all like to look our best in the summer sun and we have some great ideas to get your clients prepped for the beach. We have been chatting to Fran Hayter, Brand Development Director of Dove Spa, the leading UK salon group, and she offers some experienced words of advice on running a successful salon business, as well as the latest news and views from the college beauty world.

Tracey McCrae, Head of Beauty at Colchester Institute, gives us an insight into college life.

What are your most popular beauty courses?

Our most popular course is Level 2 Beauty Therapy and normally we recruit approximately 140 learners of diverse ages, ranging from 16 to 60.

How many new students start every year and what do you do to attract new students?

Every year, we enrol between 220 and 240 new students.

To attract new students, we ensure we have excellent links with schools and attend as many open events as possible.

What product ranges do you use in the college and why have you chosen those brands for students to learn with?

We use Skintruth™ and Salon System’s Thai Skincare range from Beauty Express. The main reason behind choosing both ranges was that the products are paraben free. We also use both the Thai Manicure and Pedicure ranges because the products have wonderful aromas and the results are excellent so our clients love them.

What treatment machines do you use and why did you choose these machines?

We use G5, Vacuum Suction, Galvanic Face and Body, High Frequency, Microcurrent and Facial and Body Faradic Plus Electrolysis. We chose these machines because they match the range required for the City and Guilds syllabus.

What makes Colchester Institute stand out from other colleges?

At Colchester Institute, we have an excellent reputation and many salon owners recognise our high standards and feel confident recruiting our students.

What do you see as the future of the beauty industry?

I think that Holistic Therapy Treatments are the way forward. We are currently offering two courses in Complementary Therapies for those aged 16 and over.

As a centre we have an excellent client base for these services and staff members who are extremely passionate about these treatments. All students leave our College with not only an excellent qualification but also a great experience.

Dove Spa

Frances Hayter has been with Dove Spa, a subsidiary of Spa & Salon UK since its inception. In 2008 she was appointed International Brand Development Director, bringing over 30 years of beauty industry experience to the role. Dove Spa has 23 sites in the UK and 4 in Canada and their mission is to help all women feel better about themselves, by creating a non-intimidating relaxing atmosphere. Dove Spa doesn’t offer Botox or invasive treatments. She shares some advice on how to run and maintain the UK’s most successful salon group.

What’s your favourite thing about Beauty Express?

What attracted you to the beauty industry?

It’s been so long ago I can’t remember.

In my day (I trained in 1976) you needed A-levels and to be 18 to be a therapist. The London College of Fashion had just launched its first Beauty Therapy course. I guess I imagined it to be glamorous at the time. How little did I know??? It is sheer hard work.

Sum up Dove Spa in three words?

Can I use 5… Real Women Caring for Themselves.

What’s your favourite beauty product?

It has to be a Dove Spa product called Super Booster. Mini capsules for that quick pick me up but also great for dehydrated skin.

What are the key factors in running a successful salon group?

Team work! It only happens when all of the team have the same vision, direction and trust in each other to make it work. Your people make the real

difference to your business. Are they engaged, motivated, enthusiastic? If they are not it’s our responsibility to help them.

What advice would you give to therapists starting out?

Be recognised, smile, be professional, always really listen to those around you, never have a bad day, look good all the time and enjoy yourself.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

Getting back into the salons and talking to all the teams, meeting all the suppliers and seeing what’s new.
