Zooey Deschanel Pretty as a Picture! This issue’s celeb trend setter has made a real impact on pretty prom style dresses and we love her for it! Looking somewhat dazed and confused on the red carpet, our too cute for words Zooey Deschanel – still looks picture perfect and fresh as a daisy, it’s no wonder she’s the new spokes model for Rimmel London. Admittedly Zooey hails from Hollywood royalty, to some degree, with an actress mother and cinematographer father, not to mention big sister Emily, star of Fox drama Bones. But, that doesn’t detract from her own great accomplishments this year, especially after receiving her first nod for a Golden Globe. From being an awkward teenager bullied in school – our New Girl has come a long way to super stardom, and although much of her life (including her divorce) has been spread across the internet in one form or another, she remains completely focused on her career with admiration from all who work with her. We admire you too Zooey! Style N’ Beauty Magazine 11

Jennifer Nettles, half of Sugarland won the most understated elegance award in our books, with this super trendy, yet beautifully draped, custom designed gown by Max Azria Atelier.

Taylor Swift, seen here in a stunning J. Mendel gown, moved away from her innocent farm girl charm and presented a more sophisticated look. Still, she is for the second time the youngest talent to ever win Entertainer of the Year Award!

Sara Evans nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year wore this pink gown with a high thigh split. It was a huge hit with her fans, but we felt her hit song “My Heart Can’t Tell You No” she performed at the awards show was a much bigger success!

It’s not easy pulling off a white overlay evening gown without looking like a bride, but Carrie Underwood makes this Abed Mahfouz piece look statuesque with a soft pastel undertone.

Nicole Kidman

The 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards kicked off earlier this month with Carrie Underwood performing the opening act with her new single “Good Girl” from her soon to be launched album “Blown Away”. The event hosted by Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire is a more relaxed version of the many country music award ceremonies, but none the less, all the ladies turned out in what some might say – was surprisingly understated in bling and over the top in pure style! refined femininity. In honor of their 50th Anniversary creative directors Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri made a capsule collection of animal print overcoats, poncho’s and accessories. Certainly not affordably priced, these particular pieces are definitely considered a good investment. There are just a few limited pieces scattered throughout the flagship stores, so if you want one you better hurry! Style N’ Beauty Magazine 15

We love it when a look comes together! Just seeing these celebrities following the Valentino runway look is confirmation of how beautifully romantic your hair can be.

Redken creative consultant, Guido who designed the French braid comeback, noted this season was all about natural beauty, when asked where he gets his inspiration from for Fashion Week, he replied, “I find inspiration for the looks I create from absolutely everywhere, from literally walking down the street to looking at architectural designs to sub cultures and music. Changes in hair and fashion always come from inspiration we get and its everywhere. It’s always evolving from something we’ve seen before into something new. I’m always looking for the next big thing. I love being backstage in the midst of all the chaos that goes on during a fashion show and watching everything come together in the final moments before the models walk down the runway- it’s all inspiring.”

ROMANCE IS IN THE

HAIR To get the look, prep hair with All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner then blow dry. Apply All Soft Argan-6 Multi Care Oil, divide into three sections, and French braid, starting in the middle and continuing counter clockwise around the hairline. You can wear this look several different ways, in an up do like Helen Mirren or a ponytail like Jennifer Morrison, or even in a neat bun, they all look sensational for summer!

PRODUCT REVIEW

Is thin hair finally a problem of the past?

Let’s be honest, any woman over 30 or even younger starts worrying about hair thinning and hair loss, I know it’s not an upbeat subject to discuss and we often don’t discuss it with each other, but most of us will spend time in front of the bathroom mirror, pulling away at strands and studying them closely when we notice slight changes in our hair volume and thickness. The problem is, hair is so important to us because it frames the way we look to the outside world, and even with wigs and extensions that help in the interim, having our own thick head of hair is priceless. 42 Style N’ Beauty Magazine

Fortunately, there are new and exciting procedures being introduced every year and one with lasers that sound promising (which we can get into at a later date), but if you’re someone who shy’s away from surgeries and watches carefully what goes into your hair – then maybe we have the answer for you. Aveda has developed what they consider the solution to weak and thinning hair with a new line called, Invati. It consists of three products, the Exfoliating Shampoo, Thickening Conditioner and the Scalp Revitalizer, all of which have been designed with

not only Ayurvedic benefits, but also Gold level Cradle to Cradle Certification. For those unaware of this particular certification, it basically means, it is holistically made with an industrial and social framework that is more efficient and waste free and in eco terms this is about as good as it gets! Each product has a unique blend of Ayurvedic elements, and even the influence of the Indian tradition of healing is in the name “Invati” which means “Invigorate” in Sanskrit. The exfoliating shampoo contains the special densiplexTM system of Ayurvedic herb blends found in all three products, but also a special blend of extracts from millet seed and milk thistle that specifically focuses on the nourishment of the follicle and scalp. The thickening conditioner contains arginine derived from sugar beets, with soy protein for strength and elasticity, not to mention clinically proven ingredients to thicken hair, like guar, palm and rapeseed. The star product which is flying off shelves and getting harder and harder to come by, is the scalp revitalizer that helps accelerate microcirculation when massaged into the scalp because of the blend of vitamin E ingredients. The facts are, the ratings are in and people have noticed a significant difference to their overall hair health and thickness, but you must follow the directions to get the results, if it says use the system every day, do it! You can purchase the products online at Aveda.com, but it might be easier to get hold of them at an Aveda salon near you!

What is the right way to apply bronzer? I don’t think I am using it correctly, I want to have a healthy glow, but always seem to end up looking like I have a fake tan, is there a product that would look more natural for me? The key to natural, believable bronzer is in the application, as much as in the actual formula and color of the bronzer. No matter which bronzer you select, it should be applied on your face where the sun would naturally “kiss” your skin. For example, along the bridge of your nose, on the apples of your cheeks and lightly dusted above the cheekbones. Powder bronzers are easily applied, but can get too dark too easily. Be careful not to keep piling it on and make sure you apply in daylight. It is difficult to refer one particular bronzer to you as most have a certain depth in colour that is designed to enhance the

tan you have. Bobbi Brown has a new Shimmer Brick for summer that has all the neutral tones to even out your skin tone, but it can easily be used as a bronzer that will give the most natural look. Just remember when you purchase any bronzer to only go a couple of shades darker than your normal skin tone, even though you might have a tan right now, it fades very quickly every time you wash, so don’t base your colour choice on the tan you have at that moment.

Beauty Q&A In the magazines stars have such shiny healthy looking hair, why can’t I get that look? I have tried the products in the store and they just look like I have grease or gold glitter on my head, nothing actually looks natural! Is there a product that will make my hair shine like the celebrities in the magazines? Well, of course there is! How do you think they get that healthy shiny look? The reason a lot of celebrity hair stylists become as famous as they do, is because they develop lines or special tricks of the trade for normal hair on famous people. This makes their clients look a lot more glamorous… Glad to say we can all get the look, and a couple of the best products

that are the Bumble and Bumble Little Bb Shine that comes in a fantastically gold case and is small enough to pop in your bag if you need an instant glam re-touch. Plus, especially for blondes, Redken Blonde Glam Crystal Flash is perfect for instant high shine. Both these products deliver high gloss looks without greasy residue, just a full head of naturally shiny hair. Thanks Mom! For my

small

helpings!

By Cindy Barnes

As this column is of a personal nature I think it’s a good idea to stay with the main theme; me, me and me! It all started with how I felt about turning 40 and I babbled on through three issues with not too much of a problem. The next issue is now looming and what do I babble on about next? Luckily for me a question was proposed to me just in the nick of time and the question being “How have you managed to be so consistent with your weight over all these years?” The question coming up was the luck I needed to get this column in the bag, but unfortunately luck is not going to be the reason for my weight consistency. I answered the question albeit briefly and now with having had time to look back on my life over the years I feel the urge to babble forth. Going back to my school years, we always sat down to a home cooked meal at night consisting of: proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables. My mother always dished up our meals and never piled our plates high with food. 50 Style N’ Beauty Magazine

It was always a reasonable helping and in my case I would specifically ask for a small helping as I could not possibly eat a mouthful more. My biggest downfall came at a time when I attended boarding school for the first few years of High School. The nostalgia of those years and the hours of absolute bliss spent in the queues at the ‘Tuck Shop’. Ring doughnuts, custard slices, jam doughnuts, koeksisters and an endless supply of sweets and chocolates. I don't miss home, I do hate school - just give me another doughnut! Within two years I had gained 10 pounds and enjoyed every minute of it but sadly my abuse left its mark - stretch marks! We moved home; I left boarding school, and was happily enjoying small helpings of home cooked food once again. I very quickly lost the 10 pounds that I had gained at boarding school and could not understand why the marks on the top of my thighs would not come out no matter how hard I scrubbed. My mother never warned me

about sudden weight gain and weight loss and the resulting stretch marks. Ever the drama queen and Shakespeare being the flavor of the term – shrieks of “Out damned mark!” were sadly a play from the past but my tapestry of scars were etchings of my future. I continued through the years with my pattern of small helpings which applied to all food groups. I ate whatever I wanted and never deprived myself of foods on the ‘exclude from your diet’ list. The key for me has been to eat and drink in moderation and I thank my mother for always dishing up small quantities and helping me to find a happy medium, it has held me in good stead over the years. In fact it has been a winning formula and one with which I have lived my life with good health and consistency. Moderation is a happy medium. What a wonderful philosophy with which to live our lives and pass on to the next generation! O

Midriff Worries Washed Away

There are two main areas on a woman’s body that causes more problems than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs and that’s the thighs and waist areas! While there are many ways to try and combat these troublesome areas, I am always in pursuit of a gentler and easier way. I recently looked into a process called Nor Adrenaline Re Lease (NARL), which describes the physiological response to this unique and patented procedure. NARL is the world’s first scientifically-proven lipolysis (fat release) technique using safe and noninvasive ultrasound technology. This method uses the Ultrasound at a specific frequency and wattage in 10 minute intervals to cause the body to naturally release the Noradrenaline Hormone to the localized targeted areas. This Hormone allows for liquefying of the fat cells in those areas with subsequent vibrational exercises such as the use of the power plate systems. This is a completely noninvasive treatment that can be done in 10

minute sessions over a period of 10 days to a month and substantial results can be seen within a short period of time. I also found that by assisting my Lymphatic System through Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, I could facilitate this “fat” loss program. Just a quick note: The lymphatic system is a complex network of vessels and ducts that move fluid throughout the body and is responsible for moving toxins away from healthy cells and carrying germ-fighting materials to cells when they are under attack by viruses. Though fluid moves through the lymphatic system, it does not have its own pumping mechanism. Lymphatic drainage is a type of therapy that is intended to help the body produce a free-flowing lymphatic system. It’s important to note that a Certified Lymphatic Decongestive Therapist (CLT) who is also an Ultrasound specialist would be required to safely and effectively perform these treatments.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Fitness fits that You! What work-out will work for you?

Exercise is one of those things that we are all very aware of, but many of us place it at the back of our minds - justifying whatever it is that we are already doing is a form of fitness regime or exercise. Whether it is walking the dog twice a day, playing a game of tennis once a week or even taking a dip in the pool every now and then, however, we’re here to tell you, it takes a systematic approach and a continuous regimen that makes a real difference to your overall health condition. On that note, we have created an easy guideline of which exercise would be better suited for you, depending on your age, ability and fitness level. Hopefully you will consider one of these choices to not only build your energy levels, but to vastly improve your health, then enjoy all the benefits of longevity that you will subsequently experience because of it! 54 Style N’ Beauty Magazine

HEALTH & FITNESS Aerobics This is a great type of class to take if your goal is to lose weight, tone up for summer, improve your cardiovascular fitness and/ or maintain good co-ordination. It is probably best suited for younger people who are relatively fit. Each session typically begins with a warm up, then onto a choreographed aerobic session, followed with a cooling down period. Depending on what level of class you participate in, there will be alternate amounts of choreography, length of warm up times and duration cool down components. For example an advanced class would have a relatively short warm up and cool down with a longer aerobic section with some complicated moves (styles may vary with each teacher or coach). If you are at the beginner level -- the choreography may be simple to master and shorter in duration. Most aerobics classes also contain a body conditioning section which includes toning your abs, thighs and legs etc.

experienced an injury as the water supports 85 to 90 percent of your body’s weight. Non-swimmers can also participate as the exercises are performed in water just below or just at chest height. Very little pressure and stress is placed on the joints during aquatic exercise, which is dramatically different from exercise performed on land. Medical conditions that can be improved are arthritis, neck or back problems, strokes and obesity. There are a variety of pool exercise accessories that can be used in conjunction with your workout that can offer you that extra level of fitness if you so choose. The only downside to Aqua aerobics is because the water supports your weight, it is

more difficult for you to burn as many calories as you would with a weight-bearing exercise on land in the same amount of time.

Body Conditioning Perhaps best suited for a healthier sports driven individual, this type of training is a combination of weight training and exercises that uses your body weight as resistance. It could be described as a form of pre-training in the sports world, which is specifically used to improve the body’s fitness level so that it can withstand the battle of sport, whether it is martial arts, football, basketball or a variety of different physical sports. Many of the programs for training this way include intense stomach crunches, squats, lunges, using different levels of hand held weights, there is also a huge selection of toning exercises.

Aqua aerobics This is not only lots of fun on

a personal and sociable level, but it also has benefits for weight loss and cardiovascular health. It’s suitable for all ages and is especially good for participants who may have Style N’ Beauty Magazine 55

HEALTH & FITNESS Pilates Originally developed in the 1920s by Joseph H. Pilates, this form of exercise has many benefits to your overall well-being and has several rehabilitative and physical therapy programs to aid in the recovery of injuries. It has also been known to improve mobility and lifestyle function for people who have certain neurological disabilities as well as other illnesses. Pilates is a great form of stress relief; with relaxing music playing you can get in touch with your inner self as well as improve your exterior self. Pilates is a wonderful mind and body workout

56 Style N’ Beauty Magazine

suitable for most ages and levels. The classes can be tailored to your exact needs so that you can take the class at any level that is perfect for you. The Pilates Method is focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Dancers use Pilates specifically for this reason. A series of controlled movements concentrates on engaging both your body and mind. It can even be used by pregnant women to learn correct breathing patterns. It’s also perfect post birth to recover body shape and tone.

Running or Jogging The great thing about this exercise is you really can do it at your own pace. That’s why virtually anyone can get involved with this exercise. As long as you have a decent pair of running shoes or sneakers you’re comfortable in you can easily get started. You should only avoid this form of exercise if you have had a severe injury or illness, for example; diabetes, chest pain, angina, asthma, epilepsy, high blood pressure, or have had recent surgery

or are pregnant, if any of these are the case-- it may still be possible to jog or run, but make sure you pass it by your doctor first. You must always stretch and warm up before you do any form of exercise, but the ideal way to jog or run is to be able to stay at a pace where you can still hold a conversation. Once you find it difficult to talk – it’s time to slow down, rest and walk for a while, then pick up where you left off. Of course, having someone to run with is a great motivator and you also have someone to talk to!

Weight Training This is the exercise best for strength building and toning of the muscles. This form of exercise used to be very popular with men wanting to gain muscle bulk and definition. However, nowadays more and more women are training with weights to tone up their bodies and gain a more shapely and sculpted look. Madonna for example specifically uses weights for her upper body and arms for more definition and less sagging. Anyone can do this type of exercise as long as you are careful to listen to a professional trainer who can advise you on what sort of weights you should be lifting and how to execute the exercises correctly. All areas of your body can benefit from this form of exercise and you can be virtually any age as it helps maintain bone density and even improve digestion. The important thing to remember is that you must discuss weight amounts carefully with your trainer first and it is advisable to receive counsel before you decide to move onto a different size weight.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Why it might be wise to use a personal trainer. If you haven’t really got into exercise yet, but are now seriously considering it, you need all the help and motivation you can get and the best way to ensure that you are doing exactly what is best for you--is to find a personal trainer. They personally evaluate your fitness level, by establishing your health conditions and/or medications you are taking. When they are fully aware of your current health situation they can design a work-out program that you can benefit the most out of. When you are provided with a one on one program, you can be assured that you are doing everything right, using the right weights, the proper techniques and the correct amount of exercise for you. This way you can avoid the worries of over exertion or being injured. It is possible to find trainers that will suit your personal time and budget needs easily, but there are a few questions you should ask first. # Are they qualified?

It’s always a good idea to check out other people who are doing a class that you are interested in, this will give you a chance to see your personal trainer or exercise teacher at work. If you like what you see, it’s easy enough to go ahead and get signed up – but if not ideally suited for you, it’s also easy enough to walk away.

# Are they certified by a nationally recognized organization? Established and recognized associations include, International Sport Sciences Association, National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association, (NESTA) National Academy Sports Medicine (NASM) # What is their experience in teaching? # Can they provide references? It is important that there is a level of experience in training one on one; it takes a certain personality to bring out the best energy levels in people that can motivate them to exercise. # Are they certified in first aid and CPR? Vitally important should something untoward happen while you’re in training, this is also something that should automatically be in any training certification program. # Do they know how to communicate with your doctor or therapist if you have any physical complications?

Being able to describe exactly what muscle or tissue has been damaged at time of an emergency is not only important, but it goes without saying that if they don’t know what you’ve done wrong, how would they know what you do right? # Are they covered by liability insurance in case you get injured during a work-out? Once again insurance is just an added bonus of security for you. # Is there a termination policy if you are not satisfied with the program? Make sure you don’t get tied into a contract that does not have an escape clause. You might want to quit the program or find someone else, but if you sign up on a contract you still have to pay! # Lastly, do you like your trainer? Can you trust him or her? You will spend a great deal of time with this person, so there has to be an equal level of respect if you both intend to accomplish a fitness achievement from the training program.

There are many other sports activities that would be great to get involved in and we will bring them to you in the future, but for now seriously consider embarking on one of these choices, your heart and your health will show their appreciation from day one and we want to see you live a long and healthy life!

IMPORTANT NOTE : Before you embark on any form of exercise it is vital that you discuss it with a health professional first, please do not get involved with an exercise program without a prior medical consultation. Style N’ Beauty Magazine 57

Beyond

the human bond

R

ecently I downloaded a copy of “Marley and Me” on my ipad and have to say, that after enjoying the movie I was inspired to write about the relationship between man and dog. Every emotion that one experiences from man to man can and will be experienced from man to dog depending on the character of the person. Well…´Marley and Me´ brought home so many childhood memories of that bond, I decided to put fingers to keyboard and share some of these very special moments. 58 Style N’ Beauty Magazine

Going back to childhood years I remembered the nights filled with fear of the “Boogie man” or the snake under the bed and too many other nightmares that made bedtime not the story it was meant to be. Our parents soon realized the power of the pet and the many advantages of having the guard dog as a form of security not only from intruders; but for their children’s vivid imaginations when the lights went out. The comfort of knowing the weight and warmth of my dog curled up in the curve of my legs meant I was not alone.

Our family comprised of four children and with having working parents we were never deprived of a warm welcome home from school as our yapping, tail wagging dogs were there to fill the void. Our afternoons were spent with carefree

abandon as we tumbled around on the front lawn with the dogs sharing the joy and pleasure of our time together. For the greater part of my childhood we lived in Botswana and I recall that dreadful night when our black Labrador Sally came rushing indoors foaming at the mouth - my father immediately identified she had been bitten by a snake, quickly the vet was called in to attend to her life or death emergency. We were all in a state of panic and shock as we cried a river whilst our poor shivering canine was in the throes of fighting for her life. Luckily for us that night did not end sadly because our vet was used to dogs being bitten by snakes, plus the fact that he lived down the road meant that he could attend to the situation muy pronto.

Sally had been outside on our front lawn, the very same lawn we had only a few hours earlier been playing on without any sense of danger. The next incident did not end so happily – Dagwood our Dalmatian started behaving rather strangely, he became restless, aggressive and was drooling at the mouth. My father had to act promptly as he knew we were all in danger as the symptoms were sure signs of rabies – Dagwood had to be eliminated with immediate effect. Our father was making a decision that we as children could never begin to understand – a decision that would make him the most unpopular person in the household for the next few weeks. We never questioned the pain that he might be experiencing, instead we were too wrapped up with our feelings and after all Dads were supposed to make things better, and certainly not be responsible for your turmoil and grief. There were funny moments as well, like the time Sally was on heat and we witnessed copulation between dogs for the first time. The two dogs were locked together and were unable to separate. Our poor Sally was crying and we were confused as to why because the other dog was not in attack mode. He jumped off her but was still attached back to back. One of us had Sally by the collar and one of us had the neighbor’s dog by the collar as we tried a tug of war in the hope of getting them apart.

At this stage things were rather hysterical as my younger brother went rushing home to enlist the help of our parents, whilst my sister hurried over to call the neighbor’s for assistance. They all seemed to arrive simultaneously but rather than rushing in to solve the problem they were doubled up with laughter! We were then ordered to leave the dogs alone. We weren’t completely convinced, but within a few minutes the dogs separated and were bounding around without a care in the world.

“Our father was making a decision that we as children could never begin to understand” The ´birds and the bees´ conversation did not exactly take place, but we were told that Sally would be a mom in the near future and sure enough she was. We were all very proud parents fussing around our six newborns, choosing our own special puppy and deciding on names. The

names never quite complimenting each other with the boys choosing Digger & Spike and the girls choosing Princess & Poppet. The other two puppies were sadly left out of the naming game. We loved and played with them constantly. We watched each of them grow all the while ignoring our parent’s warning that the puppies would have to go to new homes once they were 10 weeks old. Of course at the time 10 weeks was an eternity, and it would take forever to pass – or so we thought. The time finally arrived as we watched families coming in and selecting a puppy of their choice – a ritual that we had so happily participated in just 10 weeks before. It was a sad day for Sally, her puppies and also the four children who had formed a bond of mutual love and affection, knowing that it was not going to last forever, but forever hoping that it would. So many childhood memories had us in no doubt we would one day have our own families with the ever present dog or two. Our dogs provide us with unconditional love and companionship and by unconditional; I especially mean when your husband comes home late and is greeted at the door by a tail wagging dog, barking excitedly and adoringly eager to please. Let’s be honest, he would be “barking mad” if he thinks the wife is going to give him the same reception!

Get Strawberry Sensation!

The humble strawberry is one monster super fruit! You’ll be hard pushed to find someone who doesn’t like strawberries and it’s probably a good thing too, because as well as being the most popular fruit, strawberries are also jam packed with phytonutrients (non essential nutrients that are extremely beneficial to your health)!

Things to know! It’s a common misconception that because strawberries are so red they contain Lycopene, a non essential nutrient that has been linked to helping to prevent certain cancers. It might not be found in strawberries, but instead you’ll find it in tomatoes, watermelon and grapefruit. It is the Anthocyanins that give the redness to strawberries and these powerful antioxidants are also responsible for protecting cell structures and preventing oxygen damage in your body.

They work hard to rid the blood of free radicals that can cause cancer. In lab tests the Ellagic Acid in strawberries stopped the growth of tumors in the lungs, breasts and cervix. In a recent study at the University of California at Davis, results concluded that strawberry extract was shown to relax the endothelium which allows the blood to flow freely and farther. This is why strawberries are known to lower the risks of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Not only do strawberries give you a full days supply of Vitamin C with just 100 grams, but they also provide a healthy dose of manganese, dietary fibre, potassium, folate and all the Vitamin B’s and even Omega 3!

Things to do! Did you know that in Egyptian times strawberries were used as anti acne medicine? Apparently you can either; dampen the strawberry leaves and place them on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes or you can mash some strawberries in a bowl to a paste like substance and use it as a mask!

Fitness magazine highlighted a great natural strawberry exfoliator; take 3 strawberries with the stems mash them to the sides of a bowl with a spoon and then gently fold in the honey. Rub in circular motion over face for 3 minutes or so and then rinse. This mixture is gentle enough for sensitive skin, while the honey hydrates the combination of the two ingredients act as a gentle antiseptic.

Things to eat & drink! Strawberry shakes with fresh strawberries, summer fruit salad, waffles, muffins, cheesecake, tasty strawberry shortcake and just add a few strawberries to your cereal.

Little

Friendly Advice!

By Millie Jones A while ago I got together with some friends for a quick lunch and realized that it had been 3 months since we had seen each other. We used to be catching up at least once a week, but over the last couple of years it seems we have all been watching our pennies. While we were discussing the world’s problems, war and religion (yeah right!) we noticed how the lack of access to cash in one shape or another has drastically changed the way we live. The funny thing is, when one thing starts to look gloomy, we tend to see misfortune around every corner and focus too readily on negativity. This is why being a good friend is vital at times like these, to give good advice, to be a shoulder to cry on, or just to be there for – whatever. The question is – when do you stop being a friend and start becoming someone who always knows best? Luckily I am surrounded by friends near and far who are always ready to give me advice, 64 Style N’ Beauty Magazine

(welcomed or not), but there is one person in particular that lately gets advice from all of us. She never recognizes her true talent as a photographer, and when money is scarce, the jobs are fewer and far between and just as we all do without work, she tends to question her talent. How do you convince someone they have a real gift without getting frustrated? Do you constantly reinforce the faith you have in them until you sound like a broken record?

“At this point I personally question myself on the advice I am giving, do I even have a clue? Am I doing it all wrong?” The problem is, after days and months go by and they’re still not getting the message you are so clearly and accurately giving, patience wears thin and it’s easy to get discouraged. Then the

worse thing happens, your energy levels start to dip when you see them again and in turn you have to wonder if they feel the same way you’re feeling. At this point I personally question myself on the advice I am giving, do I even have a clue? Am I doing it all wrong? Maybe, who really knows for sure unless they know my friend? It’s enough to drive you nuts, but isn’t that what friends are for, to give and receive advice when you think they need it? At the end of it all, none of us know everything, what to say and when to say it on cue, but I do know this, friends are worth the struggle, you have to keep trying to help in any way you can, because it always comes back to you tenfold and eventually whether it’s thanks to you or someone else, friends will finally see what you see, just remain steadfast and supportive. Thankfully my friend is working again, after 1 year, 3 months and 12 days, not that I was counting!

Did you know that smiling uses more facial muscles than frowning? In addition to being a good form of exercise for your facial muscles it’s also a good way of relaxing and helping to melt the stress away and let’s face it (forgive the pun!) this is something we all want and need.

A Smile is

the m

ost

hing

in the World!

On the road with Trish Malia

Visiting the Scottish Borders, with so much wildlife around, I find many things to smile about – like pheasants that prefer to race against the flow of traffic rather than fly, and kamikaze rabbits. Likewise with the sheep who like to jump out on you when you’re on a particularly narrow and winding part of a very steep road! Talking of which I came across a sign in a field that the farmer used for dipping his sheep which read “Single File Traffic”! That particular farmer certainly had a great sense of humour. It doesn’t cost anything to smile, but it can make a difference in the grand scheme of things. A smile can go a long way to not only brightening your day, but the day and life of others as well! In fact the best way to cheer yourself up is to cheer up somebody else. Indeed smiling and laughter are tranquillizers with no side effects. Your life expectancy can also increase if you choose to smile and be happy, rather than frown and continually worry. A smile can make a person more amiable towards you and those around would

feel more relaxed in your company. There are far more reasons for smiling than not smiling. You look and appear younger (and we all want that don’t we?), you feel good within yourself (not a bad thing either!) and you make others feel good. These are only a handful of reasons for smiling and at the end of the day if you can think of things to make you smile you will find that life, for all it’s ups and downs, isn’t so bad after all. In the words of Eric Idle, “Always look on the bright side of life”! Style N’ Beauty Magazine 65
