spring

COPYRIGHT THE BEAUTY MAGAZINE LLC We are noticing a change in the rules of colour lately with the unlikely palette pals of deep shades of turquoise blues matched with golden and sunny yellows giving a completely fresh approach to bright eyes. Unlike the days when heavy colour on the lips meant you stayed light on the eyes, today we see a mixture of soft and dark for spring. These new rules combine the softness of colour on the eyes with softer lips while in contrast, you can also experiment with darker lips with strong contrasting colours on the eyes. With every new season the excitement builds with ways to draw attention to the eyes and lips keeping in line with the important rule of all, to look gorgeous!

MOCK COPY M.A.C. Cosmetics shows us strong definition in eyebrows is a common thread this spring season. The best way to accomplish this look is to invest in an eyebrow shadow that you apply with a stiff thin angled brush or a pencil that is matched as close as possible to your natural shade of brow. Always remember to use eyebrow mascara, a clear gel that neatly grooms your brows. Experiment with bold eyeliners and lipsticks to give a dynamic look.

Protecting your skin and the oceans eco system with La Prairie The latest launch from La Prairie combines five deep sea elements in a protective treatment for both men and women in their 30s to counteract the earliest stages of aging skin. But with the new Advanced Marine Biology Cream they go a step further and not only promise to provide you with beautiful skin; but also to protect the oceans eco system by using sustainable land cultivated marine substances. With every jar sold La Prairie will donate money toward Ocean Futures Society. The society was founded by Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of

legendary Jacques Cousteau. Their mission is to inspire and educate people throughout the world to act responsibly to protect the world's oceans. They have taken global action to help reverse the oceans decline and Céline Cousteau daughter of Jean-Michel is the International Program Coordinator. Céline travels extensively to spread the message of the importance of our marine life and our environment and is a compelling spokesperson on these issues. “I see my mission as informing people, and a new generation,

about our shared responsibility to protect our environment, especially our oceans,” she says. Speaking about La Prairie´s new Advanced Marine Biology Cream she says, “This is an excellent example of the responsible use of the ocean´s incredible resources without endangering its precious eco system.” Céline has offered to lend her support to the introduction of La Prairie’s Advanced Marine Biology Cream and is making selected personal appearances. La Prairie has invited others to join them in this new initiative and

Harrods was the first to answer the call by additionally donating one pound per jar sold. “Harrods is very pleased to be the first retail partner to support this initiative. As the number one retailer of La Prairie products in the UK we welcome the opportunity to work together on such a valuable project.” Marigay McKee, Director of Fashion & Beauty at Harrods. Since then the response and enthusiasm from many of La Prairie´s retailers has been outstanding with new pledges coming in all the time.

Can't

Live Without... A

few months ago, we featured Joan Collins as the new spokeswoman for Cellex C Ageless 15 and not too long before that it was Raquel Welch as the new face of M.A.C. Cosmetics. I’ve come to the conclusion that there simply aren't enough magazines who are willing to create a noise about these sensational women who are in their 70's, and I think there should be! It’s completely unfathomable to think of a cover model in their 70's before the turn of the century and yet here we are today with two of the most stunning women who look amazing! It’s true that for mature women times are changing rapidly, it might be the diet, the plastic surgeons or maybe just a little magic, the fact is what every discerning woman wants to do… is a little magic of her own and maybe slow down the changes to her body as long as possible. Okay, so there will be those of you who still believe we should all be aging gracefully and accepting our fate as senior citizens when the time comes, but to be honest there's no accomplishment to looking your age, let's face it, anyone can do that! What I wanted to know is how these women stay so youthful, for sure one of the biggest known tips is in the wigs and actually just to say that makes me wrinkle my nose a little. But it's true, both ladies swear by their hair pieces! Looking at Joan Collins in particular you have to wonder, what it is exactly that keeps her so young? Of course we could all jump in here and say it’s got to have something to do with the much younger husband, or perhaps it’s the lifestyle of having almost

anything you want when you want it or maybe it really has a lot to do with the genes, but then does Jackie Collins have that same glow? I would have to say no! So how do I get to look as good as Joan? Clearly I can't do a lot about the younger husband as my husband wouldn't be too impressed, and the genes, forget about it, I certainly didn't do too well on that front! What about lifestyle? Still working on that one, but there is something I could do and that’s try the Ageless 15 serum that Joan uses in her daily beauty routine religiously. After five weeks of using the serum only in the mornings and not at night as you’re supposed to I have already noticed a remarkable difference. It’s not just the fine lines around the forehead and lip areas, but it’s an overall difference in the texture of my skin. I’m probably not the best test subject for getting great results because first of all I have serious skin issues, not to mention that its combination skin that seems to change areas on a daily basis! I also don’t hydrate enough and I do tend to have the odd or 3 glasses of cava, etc., but even I could see what an improvement there was in the elasticity and plumpness on the surface of my skin. I can’t imagine what it would do for someone who actually takes good care of their skin on a regular basis. So how does it work? It’s all about skin signalling; one of the latest innovations in skincare technology. As we reach our 40’s the accumulation of damage to our skin cells causes the signalling process to breakdown, in other words, our skin cells start to miscommunicate which in turn makes it difficult to maintain

healthy skin. A good example of this - is when the rete pegs (the connectors that join the two layers of skin, epidermis and dermis tightly together ) don’t receive a good signal they tend to retract and let go creating the all too familiar flaccid, rough textured, sagging skin! What Ageless 15 does with the proprietary Phyto-Glycan Complex is target receptor sites to improve those communications skills and get our skin cells working the same way they did when we were in our 20’s or even 30’s, although they start to slow down a little in our 30’s too! Cellex C Ageless 15 is not the easiest thing to find in Southern Spain, but you can find it online at http://www.cellexcageless15.com or you can purchase it at Harvey Nichols in London. Where I would normally advise getting a sample for this product, I am not sure if it is possible unless you request one online, but I can say that if you were to buy one serum this year, this is it! Looking at Joan Collins in particular you have to wonder, what it is exactly that keeps her so young? Of course we could all jump in here and say it’s got to have something to do with the much younger husband, or perhaps it’s the lifestyle of having almost anything you want when you want it or maybe it really has a lot to do with the genes, but then does Jackie Collins have that same glow? Clearly I can’t do a lot about the younger husband as my husband wouldn’t be too impressed, and the genes, forget about it, I certainly didn’t GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS Moisture enhancement and signalling abilities help plump up sagging skin Glycosaminoglycans are highly charged molecules that provide the necessary space around skin cells for improved cell signalling. This process is vital to maintaining the firm structure of the skin’s dermal/epidermal junction. FRACTION OF HYALURONAN Adds fuller, youthful looking contours to the cheeks and neck Hyaluronan holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water This increases dermal volume to help regain the plump facial contours associated with youth. SULPHATED PROTEOGLYCANS Promote firmer, more resilient, radiant looking skin These particular proteoglycans including chondroitin sulphate, play an important structural role in tissue formation and enhanced elasticity essential for more youthful looking skin and tighter facial contours.

ELLAGITANNINS Help guard against free radicals and premature skin aging. Ellagitannins contain extremely potent antioxidants to help protect against superoxide radicals. These destructive molecules, predominantly created by sunlight, are the major cause of premature aging of the skin. ANTHOCYANOSIDES Create a youthful rosy glow and Balances uneven skin tone. Anthocyanosides are renowned for their collagen-stabilizing abilities. In addition they also demonstrate a capability to reinforce the collagen matrix of the connective tissue. This helps strengthen capillary walls and reduces spider veins and other broken capillaries. BETA (1,3) GLUCAN POLYSACCHARIDES Encourage firmer skin. Smooth lip-lines and refine skin texture. Specific plant-derived glucans have the ability to bind to the receptor sites in macrophages which ultimately can result in smoother, firmer, more youthful looking skin.

Everyone wants me to cut my hair to make it look thicker, but I really don’t want to, what should I do? It is true that a cut with layers will add extra fullness to the hair, but if you refuse to cut your hair, there are a lot of styling tricks that can make thin hair look thicker. Women can wear their hair “messy” to camouflage the scalp, change the part of their hair or try a modified “zig zag” part.

I am slightly worried because my sister is convinced my hair will be fried when I hit 40! Is this true? There are a variety of factors including diet, stress and hormones that may contribute to the aging of the hair, dullness and loss of vibrancy. Since there are a lot more people using colour and chemical services and heat styling at a younger age as well as a lot more pollution in the environment, we are seeing the hair age at a faster rate. Because I was seeing this more and more often in my salons, it inspired me to create my Ageless range of products. Ageless combats the three signs of aging: biological, environmental and mechanical. It visibly corrects the first signs of aging (dryness, damage, dullness and uneven texture) while pro actively protecting hair from daily stressors that accelerate aging. (The exception would be people with extremely thick or frizzy hair, which can in some cases be washed and blown out every few days and not touched in between.) A great shampoo should leave your hair shiny, bouncy and healthy looking. It’s a matter of finding the right products for your hair type; in your case you would need to look for products that minimize oil production. Another option for you would be to use a dry shampoo in-between regular shampoos.

"High waist belts, thick & thin are used on suits & sundresses with simple understated buckles" Spring trends follow a strong texture lead from the previous fall collections but with a softer approach. The heavier brassy and metal buckles on both bags and belts gives way to a lighter more sophisticated touch with an understated and limited shine. Prints on scarves and spring dresses are more detailed with many original hand painted designs that flow effortlessly throughout on dresses and skirts. Stronger contrasts are seen in the accessories moving away from the more neutral pairings and being more daring with bolder reds and oranges. Ruffles are high and low but soft and feminine. The tailored high waist pencil skirt is still a favourite for the more sophisticated look for work though the contrast of a large silk tie on the waist or framing the face is the perfect way to put a touch of glamour into your look. Look out for strands of looped jewels and slender silver bangles they will be the ultimate jewellery accessory for your spring wardrobe.

Choosing the right Plastic Surgeon An Interview with Dr. Kai Kaye of Ocean Clinic - Marbella

In today’s society there are so many choices when you’re considering cosmetic or plastic surgery. In some respects this is great for us as the consumer, but there is also a down side. Sometimes the more choices you have, the harder it is to choose the right surgeon. This can result in higher possibilities of problems occurring, especially if you do not carefully screen and evaluate each surgeon thoroughly. Some of us are so desperate to emulate our favourite celebrity that only price is important and there's almost a buy one, get one free mentality. Others are looking for serious help on changing their lives and developing a positive self image. Then there are those of

us that are simply looking to hold onto what we have for as long as we can, so a little nip and tuck every now and then is just what the doctor ordered! Or is it? What are we looking for when we enter a surgeon’s office? Maybe, it's peace of mind, it’s knowing that the person you are talking with has your best interest at heart and perhaps it's believing that they are so skilled at what they do; you will experience euphoria when you see the finished results. Your body will be re-energized, your face more attractive and your spirit lifted. Sure, these are all things that we want, but whether we get them is an entirely different kettle of fish! So how do we confidently choose a surgeon?

The most important thing is to feel that comfort zone when you are in consultation. If your surgeon does not completely focus on you and make you feel as though you are his most important client, it's best to leave, because if he or she does not give you the attention in a simple consultation, imagine what will happen in surgery! Unfortunately, what is becoming more common lately is

that some of the top surgeons forget about the client and then start looking at people as numbers due to the number of surgeries they have completed, this is when things go seriously wrong, no matter how qualified a surgeon may be, concentration on the client is vital. Dr. Kai Kaye of the Marbella Clinic believes that each individual should be treated as just

For some of the more severe cases which already present significant sun damage and static wrinkles, a facial peeling procedure like the EXOmask can be a good alternative to a face lift.

"

Do you provide your clients with pre-surgery information, like speciality brochures about the surgery they are considering? Information booklets or brochures on most procedures are available to all our clients and I recommend always preparing key questions for the first consultation with your surgeon after reading some general information, which today is widely available through the internet. Do your potential clients have an evaluation (psychological) before proceeding with surgery? Most patients, (I personally don’t like referring to as clients), are normal people without any underlying psychological problem. However, if during the extensive first consultation I get the impression that the patient presents symptoms of psychological disorders, for example; Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), Bulimia or Anorexia, I will discuss my impressions with the patient and refer them to a clinical psychologist to establish a diagnosis. This will guide us in the decision for or against an aesthetic surgical procedure. Are there any breakthrough surgeries that you have personally conducted this year? I performed a special kind of breast augmentation this year; this patient had a tummy tuck done at the same time and wanted her breasts enlarged as well, so we introduced the implants over the incision in the lower abdomen. The result is beautiful, especially because there are no scars at all on the breast itself.

that, a completely unique individual. Quality time spent with each client is vital to the success of surgery. It is to ensure there are no unanswered questions and that each client is completely aware of what to expect from their surgery. But then there is a difference with Dr. Kaye and his associates at the Marbella Clinic in that each surgery – is a personal work of art.

"

What is your speciality and how many of these surgeries have you conducted?

My specialities are breast surgery, including breast augmentation, reduction and lifting, and facial rejuvenation, including Face lift, Eyelid-lift, neck lift and peeling procedures. In both specialities I conducted several hundreds of different cases, resulting in a wide experience in these aesthetic procedures. How would you advise someone that is considering a loan to have surgery? I personally don’t think that it is a bad thing getting a loan for something you really want, but can’t afford to pay for all of it at once. We offer contact to providers of loans, but very often your own bank is the best partner for such a project. What do you think is the best suggestion for women or men that feel they don’t need a facelift but are just looking for a fresher, more youthful face? In most cases, a combination of fillers (Hyaluronic acid, Polylactic acic etc.) and some Botox can achieve an impressive rejuvenation of the face. For some of the more severe cases which already present significant sun damage and static wrinkles, a

facial peeling procedure like the EXOmask can be a good alternative to a face lift. Do you do many implants on men? We don’t do many, because men are still, in this part of the world, more reluctant to aesthetic surgery than women, but we do a few, which are either pectoral (breast muscle), gluteal or calf implants. What is the latest trend in cosmetic surgery that you have noticed? Procedures which promise less scaring and less downtime (like Smartlipo or Minimal scar face lifts) are more and more in demand, additionally there is a growing tendency for Injection treatments like Botox or Hyaluronic acid, which for most people is the first contact with the world of aesthetic medicine. Do you think that people are more comfortable talking about plastic surgery? Definitely, yes. We are still far away from the public image of our speciality in the minds of the people in the U.S.A. or in South America,

but in comparison with other European Countries Spain is very much ahead regarding this point. This is reflected in the fact, that Spain had in relation to the population the highest number of aesthetic surgery procedures performed in 2006. Where do most of your patients travel from to visit your clinic? Many patients come from the U.K. or Ireland, either through our consultations in London, or by the fact that they already know Marbella and have a house or friends here. Then we have a growing number of patients from Germany, as well as from France and even far Northern European countries.

For some of the more severe cases which already present significant sun damage and static wrinkles, a facial peeling procedure like the EXOmask can be a good alternative to a face lift. Do you do many implants on men?

What was your most memorable surgery? The reconstruction of a face of a young girl injured badly during a high velocity car accident. This was an impressive operation performed in a great team together with Maxillofacial Surgeons, and it was fascinating to see how the skills of different specialities can work together recreating a human face from the skull up to the skin. How would you advise someone that is considering a loan to have surgery?

We don’t do many, because men are still, in this part of the world, more reluctant to aesthetic surgery than women, but we do a few, which are either pectoral (breast muscle), gluteal or calf implants.

We are still far away from the public image of our speciality in the minds of the people in the U.S.A. or in South America, but in comparison with other European Countries Spain is very much ahead regarding this point. Why do you suppose that people have so much faith and confidence in your work? That‘s always a tough question for a person to answer; you should maybe better ask my patients, but I think one thing is important to understand my approach to aesthetic surgery: I always try to put myself mentally in a position at the patient’s side, counselling the best I can- this sometimes requires leaving your doctors desk and your purely medical view behind, to step away and to try and really understand the patients expectation. If you do that, you can get very close to the patient’s own expectation, evaluate it and then use all your skills to get as close as you can – or to say no, because sometimes not to do something is as important as just doing it. Do you think you have your dream job?

Yes ;-)

deep peeling procedures. The fact that you simply have a fair skin type does not mean automatically that you can’ t have a deep peel, but in some cases the application procedure and the concentration of the peel must be adapted to your skin. Any kind of deep peeling procedure has a potential risk of scaring if the peeling reaches deep dermal structures. It is paramount that the treating doctor evaluates your skin to minimize that risk. Taking this in account, a peeling can provide a safe alternative to surgical rejuvenation procedures or laser resurfacing.

I have very fair skin, but still scar easily which leaves red marks. These red marks and scars are exactly what I want to get rid of, so this is why I am concerned about any surgical procedure that potentially could leave further scarring. What do you think would be the best option for me? Can you tell me more about the possible side effects of scarring after a surgical peel or laser resurfacing?

I am well over sixty but reasonably fit, I go to the gym three times a week and keep myself very busy. I had children quite late in life and it has left me with unwanted skin and stretch marks around the waist, would I be a good candidate for a tummy tuck or am I too old?

performed to determine any possible health issues. Aesthetic surgery is very often performed on older patients, and under the conditions named above those have no more risk and an equivalent aesthetic result as younger patients. Just recently I heard about how Botox can be used for preventing over productive sweat glands. How long does it last and does it have different reactions to men and women. Also, how long does it really stay in your system, even after the treatment has worn off? The treatment of Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) with Botox is an effective and non invasive alternative to surgical interventions, which leave scars and have associated risks. The treatment can be performed under the arms (Axilla) and in the palms of the hand, reducing the excessive sweating almost immediately for a period of 6-7 months. Afterwards the Botox is processed and disintegrated; therefore it does not persist as a toxin in your system. International studies with year long follow-up did not show evidence of long term complications, in some selective cases the Botox just loses effectiveness due to the antibodies produced by some

patients. I have been researching cosmetic surgery looking for an easier way to get rid of some fat on my thighs and came across something called ultrasonic liposuction. It is noted as the latest way to remove unwanted fat with a faster recovery time and a lot less bruising. Do you conduct this form of treatment at your clinic? I use ultrasonic liposuction in patients with extreme fibrotic (hard) fat, which is often the case after a long history of loosing and gaining fat in a certain area; the body produces in those patients more connective fibres to fill out existing voids. Additionally, patients who already had liposuction tend to have much more fibrotic subcutaneous fat, for those cases it can be useful as well. Generally, bruising depends more on your individual tendency than on the extraction technique, which can be Ultrasound assisted, Vibration assisted or even Laser assisted. I worked with all systems and did get the same good results. Due to these results I personally contribute a short recovery time and less bruising more to an efficient technique

of injection with a solution containing adrenaline and to work with very fine canullas (2-3mm) limiting the destruction of blood vessels and subsequent bruising. This takes a bit longer, but results are much smoother and recovery is faster. There are a lot of different clinics here in Marbella and it is very difficult to choose a surgeon. I understand that some clinics are actually not clinics but more like management companies hiring lots of different surgeons and can be based more on salary requirements compared to skill. How can I be assured that the surgeon I choose is not only qualified to perform the surgery but also that he or she is fully licensed here in Spain? Are there particular organizations that I can check with locally?

a so-called patient coordinator, which personally I would not advise. The surgeon actually performing the procedure often comes in only a couple of days per month, you meet him just before, and you can’t really assess if you trust him or not. Qualification is an issue with some of them, being often foreigners, they may be qualified in their own country but not forcefully in Spain, and some are even performing aesthetic procedures without being a plastic surgeon, which for some procedures is still legally possible here in Spain. A patient should check the surgeon’s qualifications, here in Andalucia this can be checked with Colegio de Medicos de Malaga which is found at www. commalaga. com. Any surgeon registered as well with the UK Board of specialists can be checked at www.gmc-uk.org.

There are still no new “miracles”, even if we sometimes wish to have them. Laser, mechanical dermabrasion and chemical peels are still the current choices of possible treatment options. Botox injections or biodegradable fillers are another option which work very well for lines around the eyes, but there would still be some (very small ;-) needles involved. But if you are afraid of pain, this problem is easily solved with local anaesthetic cream.

resulting from haematoma (bruising) or postoperative tissue swelling. The use of less traumatic surgical techniques (cannulas, fine instruments) combined with an effective haematoma prevention by use of vasoconstrictive substances (which retract the blood vessels) can lower the incidence of postoperative pain remarkably. Taking advantage of all this minimal trauma techniques we can ensure, that for example after the mentioned tummy tuck there is only minimal pain which can be totally controlled by oral pain medication for a couple of days. Stem cells are a promising future for wound healing, but at the moment still far away from clinical use.

The increasing demand for cosmetic procedures opens the market as well for companies more interested in making fast money without offering forcefully the best surgeons or sometimes even at least qualified ones. Deep scar (so called ice-pick scars) can not be treated by injections, in this case a laser treatment with an CO2 or Erbium-Laser or scar excision is the only effective treatment.

Yoga has always been one of those things that grabbed my attention on and off for brief moments, but those moments quickly passed. After the initial “I’d like to be able to bend like that!” and “Maybe this could be the answer to sleeping well and stressing less” have come and gone, I quickly realise – I don’t have the patience or time for Yoga! Anyway, even when I do have the time, the daughter, the dogs, the cats, the friends and the husband (not all in that order of course) are high on my list of priorities. I would much rather be having some fun versus seeking spiritual enlightenment. On reflection, does that make me shallow? There are those of us however; who feel spiritual enlightenment and healthy fit bodies that can bend every which way gives you the ability to enjoy your other happy moments even more! In fact, there are far more people that receive an element of greater happiness simply by practising Yoga. And then there’s Neo – from the aptly named “Yoga with Neo”. Why does someone with a law degree decide to leave his successful career and become a Yoga Instructor? He admits that his life has changed completely through Yoga and he has now reached a point of contentment many of us are desperately seeking. So what am I missing? Maybe, I’m not seeing the big picture and deep down somewhere inside there is a part of me that just needs to be convinced! I have been meaning to get together with Neo for over a year now spurred by several people who had attended his retreats and felt that this was probably something I needed to do. This should give you some idea of the procrastination factor involved with my life. When I do finally make contact and am almost ready to jump in head first, I find out Neo has since moved to the U.S. and now only visits the Marbella area for retreats! Hhmm…, could this be a sign that my life simply doesn’t need any more enlightenment? While others may disagree, it would be remiss of me not to be impressed with the way Neo’s 21st Century Yoga concept has evolved into a worldwide movement. In just five years his “Journey of discovery” teachings have grown from a one to one Yogic teaching into a globally run network business, oh and by the way, if you’re thinking of having a one to one class, you’ll have to go on the waiting list for this year!

YOGA with a YOGI

If you ever felt that you just needed a Little peace and quality time for yourself, to clear your head and take a breath -maybe Yoga is the way to go!

When I did finally catch up with Neo, he was in Grenada in the Caribbean working on a children’s social development project. He has also created a new business idea of making organic chocolate to fund this work, “It’s so earthy and fascinating, we are making a documentary about it”, said Neo. I asked if he was really content with his life now and he said, “I no longer want for anything and so the desire to be anything or anyone has gone. I have my blue days but generally it’s all good.” He adds, “I offer prayers of gratitude every day and I feel truly blessed to be living this existence. Heaven really is on earth, if you can see it that way.”

active then watch this! If distraction happens then watch that! Keep going until you stop then try again next day. A good tip is to set an alarm for 5 mins each sitting. Sit regularly and increase the time one minute per week and see what happens.” Sounds easy enough, but then I do that all the time…, there are always moments when I sit and watch what is happening - in hope it will turn out the way I want! I have to admit though, it’s rarely longer than a couple of minutes, so surely that just makes it…a moment of thought? Nevertheless, it is a tip that I shall take note of and try out later.

Neo truly believes that Yoga was the catalyst for his lifestyle change and it still is the best way to maintain a healthy outer and inner world. So what was it that sparked this change, what made him try Yoga to begin with? “I was studying for my law finals and got bored with the tai chi classes so I tried a yoga class." He said. "I fell asleep during the relaxation at the end and woke up not knowing where was. I was disorientated but felt quite serene. It felt like a new feeling but strangely familiar at the same time.” The idea of being able to sit still long enough to fall asleep during a relaxation class already makes me fidgety, there must be a sense of something more powerful that can get you to that point, something that is able to shut you off from the outside world. Almost like a spiritual awakening. “Yoga is spirit. The feeling of being spiritually alive can come in many ways. These days my yoga practice is mainly breathing, prayer and meditation. In the past I practiced a lot of asanas (postures) to keep the body healthy, but at the moment I like to run a lot. My teaching and community work have become my yoga too. Yoga is everywhere.” He says.

“So why is control of breathing so important in Yoga?” I ask. “Try to control your breathing... hold your breath and see what happens. Pranayama means breath extension not breath control. It is to be respected totally and to be extended in us and all around us. We must extend our minds to know that our vitality comes from the air we breathe. This nourishment is around us all of the time. Knowing this, tiredness will happen less. Don’t wait to yawn to take a deep breath.”

Looking at Neo I would have to admit, it could be possible that if I were to think about a Yoga session he would likely be my inspiration to try it, but even though I was a

Still not convinced I mention that some people have a real problem meditating, especially me. I add that I try to block out the world around me, but images of my daily life keep sneaking in and I find myself wondering how much longer it will be before I can get up and go. I have to wonder am I the norm or am I one of those really annoying people that just don’t get it? “Give up the struggle.” Says Neo, “The biggest barrier to people enjoying meditation is the preconception of what meditation might be. It is as it is. The phenomenon of present moment awareness is simply to sit and watch what is happening. If the mind is

DAVID TOMS PHOTOGRAPHY

Clearly it wasn’t always this way? I ask, “No it took me a long time to see life like this. For many years not only was I living in the dark but I didn’t even know there was a light switch. That’s my work now with adults and children, to teach them that we have a switch and to show them where it is.” “Contentment is a conscious decision.”

I personally feel that any great change that we make in life has to be inspired by someone or something and for Neo it was the inspiration of an Indian mystic called Osho. “He combined modern psychotherapy with ancient meditation techniques.” Said Neo. He realised that we need to deal with our “stuff” before even considering being enlightened. He dared to talk about sex too and used this as one vehicle to free ourselves of repressive tendencies. He was a rebel with a cause.”

Very spiritual words so I wonder, does he now consider himself to be a Hatha Yogi? “I wouldn’t say that, just a man on a journey, guided by grace, for the good of many.” He said.

you get out of Yoga! Still, Neo strongly believes that people can benefit from yoga on all levels and there are many clear proven benefits to practicing any kind of yoga.

gymnast in my youth I no longer feel I am in the age bracket where my body can twist itself into Yoga postures. Neo disagrees but only to a certain extent, “A posture is not necessarily yoga and yoga is not necessarily yoga. A movement or position can embody the quality and state of yoga when there is a sufficient degree of sensitivity and awareness to the extent that you can feel what is happening, and you are aware that you can feel what is going on in the body. Flexibility has very little to do with yoga however, saying that, being loose feels good!” In translation - I would have to believe that the more flexible you are, the more

To end, I ask how he really feels about himself and if there isn’t a little ambition left lurking for something more in life, “I once dreamed of living in America and now that I live in America I no longer have those dreams. I am curious as to what each day brings; it really is one great

adventure. I have a very busy life and travel a lot and that comes with challenges. My life is no longer my own, I’m just along for the journey. Somehow many amazing projects and dearly beloved people keep crossing my path. I could not imagine being any other way and do not think for a moment about doing anything different. I love to serve and I live to love. That’s the bottom line! I decided a while ago to give up the struggle – I truly believe that suffering is optional. Most of the time I feel great and when I don’t, I am aware of how I’m feeling and if possible I’ll run, dance or practice some yoga asanas. The down in the dumps feeling soon passes and my faith in the saying that “this too shall pass” is aptly restored. It’s all good.” So, tell me something to convince me that Yoga would be good for me… I say. “Trust your own intuition and be guided to follow your own path to spiritual awakening. This is the truest form of yoga.” Neo.

wenty years ago, it wasn’t cool to drink water in restaurants, except among the ladies-who-lunch who liked to pose with a glass of Perrier water poured over cracked ice with a twist of lemon peel. Since then, the bottledwater market has gone ballistic, achieving sales of an astonishing 187 billion litres in 2007. The reason? Health and wellbeing pundits told us that drinking between six and eight glasses of water a day cleanses our systems of toxins and helps to keep our skins looking and feeling fresh. We all sat up and took notice, and the quarter-litre bottle of water (of any denomination) suddenly became a fashion statement, being seen on tennis courts, in boardrooms and bedrooms or nestling in the between-theseats armrests of four by fours. In actual fact; up to half of the recommended quota of six to eight glasses of liquid can be taken in drinks like tea (low-caffeine is better for you) and fruit juice as well as fruit and vegetables with a high water content - tomatoes and cucumbers, for example. You’ll need a bit more water in hot weather and during and after exercise, when it’s a good idea to make up for lost fluid by drinking in frequent sips rather than gulping it down in one go. If you feel tired, snappy, have a headache or can’t concentrate, reach for a glass of water, the chances are you’re dehydrated. You’ll know your baby needs more water when his or her tongue seems to be drier and wet nappies don’t happen so often. So where does our bottled water come from? About 97% is in the seas and oceans and 2% is locked inside the icecaps and glaciers (but watch this space!). Only a fraction of the remaining 1% is considered to be fresh water apt for drinking or bottling in the form of “natural mineral water” or “spring water”. Here in Spain, there are about fifty-five brands of natural mineral water on the market, and many more are imported from the rest of Europe and even further afield. “Spring waters” conform to minimal

diseases. Is there any difference between sparkling and still water? With few exceptions – one being, famously, Perrier - sparkling water happens when you add carbon dioxide gas to plain water, and shhhht! tang and bubbles! Sparkling water has a slight down side: it causes minimal tooth decay. However, this is nothing compared with the havoc done to your teeth by carbonated soft drinks which are made with distilled water: you would have to down 300 bottles of sparkling water to do the same damage to your teeth as one carbonated soft drink does (next time the Tooth Fairy visits your home, get her to put the tooth in a glass containing a carbonated soft drink and check out the condition of the tooth in the morning - if you can find it!). The US Environmental Protection Agency says that “distilled water … tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact … carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive … many metals

are dissolved by distilled water”. Heavy regular consumption of soft drinks doesn’t just add extra sugar to the problems of 300 million obese people worldwide: the distilled water that carbonated soft drinks are made of actually causes your body to eliminate calcium, magnesium and trace minerals. Without these, the body is predisposed towards premature aging, heart problems and a long list of degenerative diseases. What about energy drinks and flavoured waters? Energy drinks don’t just contain sugar in the form of maltodextrin; their core ingredient, the one that gives you a kickstart, is a very high dose of caffeine, which the more health-conscious of us prefer to avoid. This brings us back to water, which, as advertised by the canny water companies, is the preferred choice of the informed consumer due to its zero calorie count. If you get bored with plain water, try one of the trendy low-cal or no-cal flavoured waters that actually fit between the wellbeing parameters and have mint, cucumber and other fresh and enticing tastes. The optimum lifestyle? Drink slightly alkaline water - say the pundits, containing minerals like calcium and magnesium. Keep away from food and drink that make the body more acidic, like soft drinks, alcohol, meat, sugar, fried and processed food, white flour and dairy products. Include some exercise, love and laughter, and look forward to a long, healthy life. Assuming that the slightly alkaline water inside the bottle is the real thing, how about the container? Glass bottles are heavy and a real beast to cart around, but glass is the safest material from the health point of view. Water in plastic bottles is easier to transport and doesn’t break when it’s dropped. If you prefer plastic bottles, there’s a major health hazard in leaving them in the sun or close to a heat source. On heating up, some recyclable plastic bottles leach into the water they contain a xenoestrogen called Bisphenol A, or BPA, which is linked to cancer and severe childhood illnesses among others. Keep your plastic bottles of water in a cool place, and if the water tastes or smells of plastic, don’t drink it! On the green front, the carbon footprint of bottled water is huge. Just making it

generates up to 1,000 times the carbon dioxide emissions created by the same quantity of tap water. And is it really necessary to subscribe to the madness of lugging all this water round the world? As far as getting rid of the empties is concerned, plastic is one of the most durable substances on earth, a plastic bottle taking 450 years to decompose. Unsurprisingly, the doomlords forecast a planet littered with plastic and tell us that if we’re interested in taking the next step towards a sustainable future, plastic is out. Not considering the environment, a year’s supply of bottled water for drinking and cooking for a family of four costs a small fortune. What’s the solution? Tap water springs to mind, but the enthusiasm of many of us is diluted by the belief that unfiltered tap water can contain parasites, chlorine, fluoride

Interestingly, both the Spanish and Thames water authorities mention an issue many of us probably overlook; what our water pipes are made of. Up to 1980, many Spanish pipes were made of lead, and these must by law be replaced in the public water system before 2012, while Thames Water says discreetly that by 2010 “the oldest and leakiest Victorian pipes located in North and Central London will have been replaced.” Lead in drinking water can cause a number of health problems, particularly in young children. Your tap water may be obtained via desalination, a popular option for many years in, for example; Arab countries – where fresh water sources are limited and the power source is cheap. In brief, three quarters of the water produced by desalination is distilled, and although distilled water is beneficial when used for brief periods and under medical supervision to cleanse and detoxify the body, the long term effects (mentioned above) are discouraging, to say the least. A more recent desalination technology is a filtering process called reverse osmosis. RO uses multi-stage sediment, carbon and membrane filters to remove rust and calcium carbonate, organic chemicals and chlorine, typically including remineralisation of the end water product. An optional final stage includes ultra-violet or ozone treatment. The US military actually uses this system on the battlefield and in training, and it can purify not only salt water but even water contaminated with nuclear,

biological and chemical agents. This has to be the way forward. RO water filtering and purifying processors are generally available and can be used equally by families living in rural areas, by visitors to countries with no access to clean water, or by householders who just love to have mineral water come out of the tap. You can opt for the more expensive plumbed-in under-thesink version or the portable free-standing system. Compared against the annual cost of bottled water for a family of four, you’ll pay off the countertop water system in six weeks, including the cost of changing the filters regularly. It’s healthy, it’s cheap, and it’s green. What’s more, this water hasn’t been sitting around in a bottle for two years: it’s freshly filtered. You will eliminate forever the risk of tripping over the dog or slipping a disc lugging crates and packs of bottled water from supermarket to car park to garage to kitchen. And those unsightly scores of dead water bottles will never again multiply like rabbits outside the garage or in the cupboard under the kitchen sink.

and dioxins. What do the water boards say? In Spain, the national water authority regularly carries out strict checks to ensure that the water across the country is fit for human consumption. The water board for Estepona, our local ayuntamiento, annually runs 22 complete analyses, 63 control tests and 141 tests for colour, taste and smell, plus 23 daily checks on the chlorination level of the area water supply, all tests in accordance with Real Decreto 140|2003. To say that we all envision the same image as the perfect body would be a grievous error, because we don’t. We all have very different ideas of what is beautiful and what our bodies should look like. Although there are some who agree on a particular type of image more than others, most would agree that proportion is key versus weight or height. So why are we still having problems accepting who we are or what we look like?

The media has long been the culprit for the way we feel about ourselves and on some levels I can understand why we all think this way. It is not about who we are, but what we look like and that in turn makes us somebody. But as a general rule I personally feel that it is not the media that portrays the perfect person, it is us as a society. We respond to certain images more than others and this is what sells. We can’t expect people to publish magazines and produce television series that don't make money. It is the fault of society as a whole for most things in life that we frown upon, sometimes things really are that simple; as in the pure logic that if we did not support it, it would not exist. It’s almost like the chicken before the egg, if you didn't have the designers who used Carrie the skinny models to show offKay their45 clothes, then the media image of the perfect body would be different, however, the reason designers want the skinny models is because we buy more clothes from them when their skinny. So, where does the low self esteem really come from? Magazines and TV have little impact compared to our families, friends or colleagues who have the most influence on who we are and how we feel about ourselves. What will it take to finally be happy with our shapes and sizes? For some of us, it will never happen, no matter what we do to improve the way we look on the outside, it will never be enough, there will always be something that could do with a little improvement. Perhaps that is exactly who they are or maybe it’s just a normal human trait, imperfections are part of what make us human after all. Being completely content with our bodies can’t simply happen from a conversation or a book… or can it? ItJoanne has to31 be more than just a feeling or sudden acceptance. It has to take a life experience to see yourself in a different light, a more positive light that changes your perception of what beauty really is. But therein lies the problem, why do we need something drastic to change our lives before we appreciate ourselves? The Author of This is Who I Am, Rosanne Olson, gained insight and understanding of

" I had screwed up ideas about what I should look like. I cut my hair, got tattoos, and began wearing grungy cutoffs with black combat boots."

body image, not only through her own struggle with Anorexia as a young woman, but also during her time working in nuclear medicine where she met many women diagnosed with breast cancer. The concept for the book came about much later however when Rosanne was asked to do a photo session for a female client (Mary) who needed a professional photo for her business. When booking the shoot Mary mentioned that she wanted to lose weight first to look her best, unfortunately before she could lose any weight she was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. This prompted Mary to arrange the photo session as soon as possible to avoid photo images of hair loss during chemo and physical body changes after surgery. She also wanted and needed to be photographed nude to have something that reminded her of how her body was, pre-cancer. This thought process struck a chord with Rosanne; how in an instant Mary had completely changed her mind about her body and now wanted to remember it just the way it was. “This is who I am” depicts the way we feel about ourselves. With each character portrayed in the book we can easily relate to them, to their lives, their thoughts, their strengths and weaknesses. There are so many admirable qualities from all these women, not only for having the courage to be photographed nude but to share their inner most feelings about their bodies to help us put things into perspective. Rosanne spent six years putting this collection of women together and found it difficult to choose just a few of her favourites, “It is extremely hard to pick out three most compelling stories, as if picking out my favourite children. But let me try.”

"I remember going to gatherings of family where the focal point of the conversation was about weight - who got fat, who's getting fat, and who they think will get fat next."

• Jennifer, age 33: She gave birth a day and a half after the photo shoot. She states that while we want others to find us beautiful what we really want is to find ourselves beautiful. How important and profound that is! Rosanne hopes that this book will lead to discussions about compassion, self esteem and what it means to be human. To be used as a catalyst for discussions at women’s groups, weight loss centres, high schools and book clubs. She adds, “This book contains no answers but is a springboard for helping us find and appreciate what lies within.” I have read the book and thoroughly enjoyed both the images and the stories with great interest. ! Y A D O

Another year has just bitten the dust! Along with all the New Year resolutions! What happened to that special promise that this year was going to be the year that you made all the necessary lifestyle changes, to finally morph into that elusive ´New You?´ Most of you were left choking in the dust that your willpower left behind in it's speedy retreat. We go through the same ritual year after year with good intentions and excitement as midnight draws us in and the New Year bubble carries us out. Some, more serious than others, will see their resolutions through but for the most part the majority revert back to old patterns, beliefs and unhealthy lifestyles. Don't beat yourself up about losing the plot so

early in the year but perhaps you should think about changing the time frame. How about changing the word resolution to revolution? A cycle of successive events or changes that will take place every month this year leading up to seeing in the New Year with you chanting ´Happy New You´ instead of ´Happy New Year´. The revolution will be over – you will have finally overthrown the system by which you were governed. You

BY CINDY BARNES will experience love, power and respect for yourself . Be careful – it’s contagious! And so my ‘Revolutionaries’ do you think you’re ready to engage in a one year cycle? Your lifestyle changes have to be within reason and not too drastic if you would really like to see this through. The most important thing of all is to have a daily diary or journal in which to make a list. Some of your changes will be made on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and the even bigger goals maybe over several months. All time management begins with planning – once you have that in place you can begin. Of course, everyone's list will be different but I would like to make a few suggestions with which to boost your thought patterns. My

daily to do list should be every day essentials but unfortunately they are rarely put into practice as they are not ingrained in the same manner as brushing your teeth, hair, daily bath etc. so follow a few guidelines everyday to a triumphant revolution. When you wake up in the morning, wake up with a smile on your face. That smile will be the start of a very happy day. If you're happy then everyone around you will be happy – it rubs off! Happy vibes increase happy making serotonin which boosts your immune system. Keep your spine flexible with a two minute work-out first thing in the morning. For example: reaching up with both arms stretch high and then roll down through the spine and touch your toes, roll back up through the spine. Legs apart and hands on hips bend sideways to the right and then to the left and back to the middle. Upper body twist from the hips going right and then to the left, back to the centre and bend the upper body backwards tilt your head back and look up to the ceiling. It helps promote and sustain mental good health and people with a well-developed sense of fun usually have few emotional problems.

and determination. Spend the first month preparing and researching different methods of assistance. Visualise yourself without a cigarette in your hand and fresh, sweet smelling breath. Find your biggest ashtray and turn it into a ciggy bank for every box of cigarettes you would have paid for. At the end of every month why not use that money for a luxurious beauty treatment? You deserve to reward yourself! This will be a monthly revolution as you will need to record every month you have been a non- smoker and make sure you write up the beauty treatment that you rewarded yourself with. You have abused your body and it´s now time to treat it with a bit of love and respect.

Start Good Habits

If you need to lose weight you will need to adopt the same mindset. You have a year within which to reach your target and you can decide whether you would like to lose weight within a month, several months or a year. For the best results combine a weight loss programme with exercise. You can keep a weekly or monthly record of your weight loss. If you are not very good with dieting try to eat smaller portions along with your 10 minute walk every day – you will lose weight. To be at your healthiest you need to eat five fruit and vegetables a day and there are several ways to do this. Your vegetables should be steamed to retain the goodness of the phytonutrients. Buy a juicer and take them in liquid form. There is an easier way to take your veggies and that is in capsule or gummie form. Juice Plus provides a creative way to consume added nutrition from 17 different fruits, vegetables, and grains every day. A green capsule for vegetables to be taken in the evening and an orange capsule for fruit to be taken in the morning. Contact Lotta: atraccionplus@gmail.com

At the end of the month you must compile a list of all the words that you have learnt. Perhaps it would be a good idea to select your words according to a theme i.e. weather, health, animals, or shopping etc. or perhaps choose a subject that you often come across. Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water. The recommended amount is two litres a day and room temperature is preferable as it doesn’t cause a shock to the system. A word of warning to all females – Don´t drink water out of a plastic bottle that has been left in the sun. The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak into the water and they have found these toxins in cancerous breast tissue! Start walking. Depending on your lifestyle any walking is a good thing, but if you walk for 1 hour every day, it sharpens your brain, lowers your blood pressure and cholesterol, plus it reduces the risk of a stroke. Stop Bad Habits

If you need to stop smoking, try to plan a realistic goal and time frame within which to achieve it. You must have the right attitude

Try and learn something new every day and make sure that you record it in your journal. Your daily journal should read something like this, ‘What have I learnt today?’ Maybe you’ve just read the Daily Newspaper and noted an interesting fact, record it in your journal so that you can always refer back to it. Television documentaries are a wealth of facts and information, watch the Discovery Channel or the History Channel for inspiration. As you go about preparing your journal for your journey ahead perhaps it would be a worthwhile exercise to include ‘gratitude’. When life gives you a few knocks and upsets along the way be happy in the knowledge that you can easily offset them against all the things or people you are grateful for. It is the balance you need to help scale and conquer the mountain that lies ahead. Holistic healing Does a body good!

And so onwards as my quest continues …… BY CINDY BARNES

S

ounds dramatically like "The Lord of the Rings" as I journey on searching for the keys to activate and balance the energy that lies within. What is life without drama? BORING! Every sport has it's injury, every art has it's stress and every love has it's pain. I have learnt that we need to release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the body. We must release tension and improve circulation to improve the elimination process. There are a lot of different therapies available to help us maintain this positive flow because every good machine needs it's pipes unblocked once in a while to run more efficiently. And now the time has come to continue with the curiosity, suspense and

expectation with which I offer my body to the professional hands of highly qualified therapists - Lucky me! ELECTRO LYMPHATIC TREATMENT. During our first two years living in Spain I always seemed to be susceptible to colds and flu, especially with having a daughter of four at the time who innocently brought home the nasty little bugs that set me off sneezing, sniffing & coughing. Once a year is enough for most of us but my three times a year stint was just not much fun at all. Had I known what I know now, I would most certainly have explored the advantages of “Lymphatic Drainage”. This is a light rhythmical form of massage

designed to ease congestion in the lymphatic system which plays a major part in the immune system and we need a good immune system to keep those "nasty colds" at bay or to help shorten the duration. I called the Nutri-Cleanse Clinic in San Pedro Alcantara and spoke to Judy Dixon to make an appointment. The clinic had recently purchased the American Electro Lymphatic Treatment (E.L.T.) machine which was developed over 20 years ago by Doctor De Montfort who specialised in blood and noted the benefits to the lymphatic system. The E.L.T. machine is reputed to be up to 12 times more effective than manual lymph massage as it heals at a deeper level without applying any pressure to the skin.

Trained in Harley Street at the Wholistic Medical Centre Judy gave me a brief outline of the function of the lymphatic system and what

the benefits would be. Lymph is a clear fluid that circulates throughout the body, cleaning away all the dead cells, bacteria and toxins and is the key to a healthy immune system. The lymphatic system sometimes needs help to keep the Lymph fluid moving, the natural flow can be interrupted without regular exercise or perhaps an unhealthy diet, there can be several reasons why your Lymph system does not work as efficiently as it should. When this happens, the build up can cause inflammation, pressure and pain. Toxins accumulate causing the body to become sluggish and the clogged. Other physical signs of congestion in the Lymphatic system can include: Water retention, muscle aches and pains, weight problems, scar formation or stretch marks, acne, carpel tunnel syndrome fibromyalgia, asthma or sinusitis, headaches, immune system problems. Electronic therapy is a newer treatment based on Quantum Physics using electric energy to not only stimulate the flow, but it creates a negative energy charge that helps break up protein clusters. These clusters can cause blockages. The treatment also stimulates the blood flow and helps prevent the blood cells from sticking together. Oxygen and nutrients can therefore be delivered to the body tissues more effectively. Judy showed me through to the treatment room and armed herself with a hand held wand which resembled a hair dryer and proceeded to send high-frequency electrical pulses into my lymphatic system. It was just as she said it would be – painless! There was a warm tingling sensation as she rolled the head of the wand along the lymphatic pathways. There were areas that the wand glided along quickly and easily and then there were sections where it was sticking and the tingling was more intense. Judy told me that this indicated “blockages” and with repeated movement in that area the stickiness abated and the wand flowed more freely. All too soon the hour was up and my lymphatic system had been given a “wake up” call. The

conclusion was that my lymph system was sluggish and it would be beneficial to have another session. Judy went on to explain that by creating a clear, empty area, (a vacuum) it allows the lymph to flow upwards towards the sub-clavicle vein and therefore keep working the lymph even after the treatment has finished. The clearing action continues that night and even into the next day. Once a blockage has been cleared it does not return, however moving one blockage may encourage further sluggish lymph to move further up the body and refill the area, sometimes blocking again (this is then short term and can quickly be removed.) I was then given a glass of water to drink and advised to drink water throughout the day because as the toxins are being directed to the liver and then onto the kidneys and colon, water is necessary to flush these toxins out. His goal is to get his patients well in as fewer treatments as possible, but without stopping prematurely with the root of the problem still remaining. Herewith a quote taken from his web site, “It is imperative to understand the energy flow and how your body works. It is not enough to just know and work the muscles and bones in your body.” I had a two hour treatment and every testimonial that I had read was well and truly validated from my own personal experience. He immediately picked up on the blockages that were prohibiting the energy flow in certain areas and set about applying acupressure to the specific muscle or tendon group where I felt pain or soreness. I have to stress that this is not a gentle massage as the focus is on the deeper layers of muscle tissue and fibres. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibres of the muscles, tendons and fascia. The massage held neither pleasure nor pain but I will say that at times it was uncomfortable although I never felt that I did not want to be there. All too soon the hour was up and my lymphatic system had been given a “wake up” call. The conclusion was that my lymph system was sluggish and it would be beneficial to have another session. When Reg identified a tender spot he told me the physical reason and emotional reasons for the imbalance. This is the part where I choose to call him “body clairvoyant”. The muscle in my neck that flares up with a muscular spasm from time to time was like a ´steel girder´ in Reg´s words. He did a lot of work in that area and I have to say I felt immediate relief from the ache in my jaw and a lot more mobility in my neck due to the release of tension. You can have a one or two hour appointment depending on the level of work needing to be done. I was also instructed to drink water after the treatment to help flush the toxins away. Well here I am poised at the keyboard to write my article on body image. I dabbled with entitling my article “coping with being overweight” or “how to live life to the full as a couch potato” but somehow none felt right. So where am I coming from? You may remember my trip to LA for the gratitude groove – well we’re still keeping up the Gratitude Journals. The reason I bring this up is because when I saw the group photo of all the women who attended, I looked shockingly awful! I’m not exaggerating: I was like Jabber the Hut (for those of you uninitiated it’s a character from Star Wars) – my face was so puffy, my body curved in at least 10 places – it was horrific to view. Of course some people said, “It wasn’t that bad; perhaps you’re a little bit overweight” (they were being kind) or “You look fine” (they were lying) or “Boy you look horrendous!” (spot on!). At the end of the day: who cares? The question is am I going to do anything about it? I would like to apologise in advance to all of you out there who don’t have a weight problem and are totally happy with your own body image. So that rules out five of you! No, seriously. Most people, at some stages in their lives, will have gone through a period of feeling dissatisfied with one’s self – whatever aspect of self: be it mind, body or spirit. And, we all cope with it in different ways. For some of us, we seek out assurance from our friends and family. Most of the time our friends will be more caring and coaching in their approach to encourage us to tackle our issues, whilst family will be inclined to say “shut up moaning about inconsequential stuff and just get on with it!” On this occasion, of seeing the Jabba the Hut picture, I decided not to share it with anyone and

it made me realise I needed to take action. Those of you who know me, will laugh if I say I was considering joining a gym and taking on a personal trainer. I’m a consummate professional at joining gyms and only going once or twice. To quote a good friend of mine “Well you have to try out the showers at least

It certainly got the adrenaline pumping, metabolism was higher and we laughed so much: which is great for the endorphins. So that was a great experience and my legs and arms were feeling more toned. But Jabba the Hut persisted with the middle tyre. I decided on more drastic action. A detoxifying massage! I visited

"On this occasion, of seeing the Jabba the Hut picture, I decided not to share it with anyone and it made me realise I needed to take action." once before going to the juice bar for a champagne cocktail as you’ve earned it!” I did toy with the idea of engaging a personal trainer but his regime was so tunnel visioned that I would end up paying him an extortionate amount of money to have just four sessions a month. This would be for a set fee, paid in advance, non-changeable times/ non-refundable, but on the plus side I could talk to him on the phone anytime if I was having difficulty with the fitness programme?? Yes, well I could

Anadina, a masseuse from the Dominican Republic whom I met at a Women In Business Lunch a little while ago. Now, the fact that she came from the Dominican Republic should have set off my alarm bells (more on that later) but in her treatment room, the music and ambiance were very welcoming. I had to strip off all my clothes before she applied her very own concoction of massage oil. Anadina asked if I had had massage before. I replied “Oh Yes!”, “I’ve had massages all over the world”,

"I felt like a washing machine going through all the cycles of pre-wash, great agitation of a dirty wash, over 1200 rpm spinning cycle and gentle end!" always call the Samaritans free of charge if I found myself in a desperate position, so I didn’t follow through on that one. Then I decided to join a dance class. Now that was fun and along with fifteen other women, three to four men and one gay guy called Neil (I have to compartmentalise the guys as they do have different dancing styles which is great fun when Neil and I are fighting over who leads!) We learned a few interesting new dances including the quick step and cha cha cha.

only I had forgotten how strong the masseurs are in Dominican Republic so of course I glibly added “I much prefer a strong massage” and boy did I get it! I was supposed to have a one-hour’s treatment; but Anadina said I was in dire need of attention to re-energise my body and in the end I had two! Anadina did not mince her words of assessing my issues (even though her English isn’t great, I certainly took on board the various messages transmitted

via the raised eye brows, the deep sighs, and best of all when I would respond in no uncertain terms that the massage created a strong reaction, she said “Good”!) As part of the massage, a hot towel was put on different parts of my body in between being worked on and I’m sure tons of toxins came out as that was administered! I felt as if I had a complete out of body experience and at the end we giggled so much as I felt like a washing machine going through all the cycles of pre-wash, great agitation of a dirty wash, over 1200 rpm spinning cycle and gentle end! When I got off the treatment couch (which was very comfortable) I took one look in the mirror and you’d think I was on drugs the way I looked … that spaced out look, my hair was like a hay stack and you could see the main areas that had been worked on were slightly red from pressure. Some home-made tomato soup was prepared, which I gladly consumed, along with a glass of water, we then discussed further treatments to reduce the water retention. I noticed on my return I truly felt my body easing, the water retention was subsiding and after the session I could feel the energy moving more around my body, however, as I drove home I couldn’t fail to see my ‘belt of fat’ around the middle and promptly felt annoyed with myself for not doing more than having a massage to deal with it. I know a lot of women around my age who experience this expansion termed “middle age spread” but equally I know women who don’t. And for some of them they don’t even exercise to keep it at bay but are naturally svelte. One friend of mine had given up bread for at least a month and she noticed hers diminish considerably so I decided to follow in her footsteps. Still, it wasn’t enough for me without having to start a major exercise regime (remember, we’re talking about

someone who hates gyms and donning tight Lycra outfits!). So what next? Serendipitously, I met a woman called Krista who had recently started up a business out here in Spain with an amazing machine created in Belgium called Debussy. It gets rid of fat using a method called ‘Thermodermie’. Yes you heard right! It does lots of other things as well but she’s had great results with fat reduction and of course I had to give it a try! It’s an interesting treatment as the machine looks like a boxed air-conditioning unit with a Noo-Noo hose (remember the vacuum cleaner on Teletubbies … well that’s Noo-Noo!) And to use the terms explained on the website for the slimming element of the treatment …. “The alternating suction cycles combined with infrared radiation break down the links in the triglycerides that are stored in the fat cells. The triglycerides are broken down into fatty acids and migrate outside the cells (lipolysis). They are then drained away and eliminated via the natural pathways or burnt in the muscles. This leads to a reduction in localised adipose deposits, thereby reshaping the body in just five sessions”

"It’s an interesting treatment as the machine looks like a boxed airconditioning unit with a Noo-Noo hose" And there you have it. It’s very quiet; a gentle massaging movement over the key areas which lasts for about 1 hour. My sample session with Krista resulted in the upper part of my stomach going down 2 centimetres and it’s stayed off! It was amazing. So, I’m ready to go back to do the next sessions to tackle the other parts of the tyre.

great (even without the influence of some gorgeous champagne) to feeling angry at my procrastination towards exercise. Although, I do enjoy a good walk and when friends went on holiday last week I had the pleasure of doggie sitting and giving them three or four walks a day (don’t tell the owners as currently the dogs only get two walks a day!). We started brilliantly, going along the beach, the dogs loving it and then WHAM BANG!!, I tripped and fell over on my way out for the morning walk, badly damaged my ankle and had to go to hospital for an X-ray in case it was broken. Ever since then I have been gingerly nursing the bruised foot back to health. Now you may wonder how much of this accident is down to my unconscious mind stopping me from exercising! Well I’m working on this one and will no doubt have more to report in the future.

8 secrets

The

best kept

women

won’t tell! BY NICKY MACEDO

In the first flush of love, you go round wearing an idiotic smile and are so far distanced from reality that on arriving home after a shopping trip, you dump the fish on the hall table and the car keys in the freezer. This exalted state of mind is the direct result of staying up half the night with your amour and exchanging - apart from the obvious - all the secrets of your earlier life. Pent-up emotions and locked-away skeletons flow freely one after the other as if in a mad rush to reach fresh air.

You try not to reveal your worst hang-up because you know that if you do, he won’t be able to resist telling a rapt audience that you go green and throw up when you see spiders. It’s a man thing, he can’t help it - the next stage is finding bouncy rubber arthropods with red-painted fangs hanging from the bathroom ceiling. So you keep it quiet, and practise Harry Potter’s “Riddikulus” spell on the spiders in private.

Riddikulus!

The one before you... There’s no doubt that you love him to bits, he makes you dance on air. The previous guy is a dead duck and past history. Perversely, although you manage to keep the major details re: the dead duck under wraps, some part of you is desperate to tell all, dropping hints like brickbats all over the place. “Do you know what she asked me?” raged an unknown male dinner companion who was on the receiving end of this inexplicable behaviour. “She said, ‘Would you share your lover’s toofbrush?’”. Some men find hint-dropping a turn-on while others, more understandably, have a positively negative reaction.

What, this old thing? We hate admitting how much we spend on clothes. Let’s be honest how many men appreciate all the work it takes? However, trying to get away with it by doing a spot of creative accounting is a bit like sashaying down the catwalk between tax avoidance and tax evasion. For example, a bikini; it’s amazing how much two strategically engineered strips of cloth can set you back, but you can get round this by modelling just one strip in front of the guy who financed it, admitting to only half the cost. Expert avoiders don’t admit anything, while a few of us are evaders and stash spare dosh in undisclosed bank accounts (it must be said that some men do, too).

don’t keep Dad in the loop. There are two areas that can make you button up. The first is school work - the kids disrupt the class, can’t stand the maths teacher, write back to front or suffer from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. The second is connected with unsatisfactory relationships with their peers - they are bullies/bullied, loners, they have undesirable contacts outside the school gate, or they video nasties on the mobiles you lovingly gave them for Christmas. Whatever the hiccup, large or small, one-fifth of us prefer to confront the school head alone rather than tell Dad what’s up, thus avoiding a volcanic explosion of male wrath which leaves both you and the kids under a dust cloud.

MOCK COPY Who me? Never!!

“Women need to talk to other women,” said the wise man, and we do, unburdening ourselves of our innermost secrets in a way that the men in our lives would consider total betrayal. The phrase “I was so angry ... of course, I never told him,” is a cornerstone of these conversations. This is why you can happily say you are going to your Pilates session, taking the dog for a walk or heading out for a business meeting or a round of golf, but don’t admit to having coffee with a girlfriend. It raises the phantom of the confessional in his mind, and awkward questions may follow.

I just need a quick bite!

This isn’t a modern escape route - it even gets a mensh in the Bible: “Bread eaten in secret is pleasant,” (Proverbs ix.17). The habit can set in quite early in a relationship, even before kids, cats, dogs, the landline, three mobiles, the

microwave buzzer, the doorbell and one husband prevent you from sitting down at mealtimes for longer than it takes to swallow two consecutive bites. Input requirements range from a private ten a.m. chocolate rush to a two a.m. leftovers binge followed by a visit to your friendly shrink.

Bottom line at the office Problems at work used to be kept close to the male bosom. Now female bosoms have joined the ranks, Mum’s the word. The inward look you bring home can result from a game of promotional leapfrog on the part of your junior, a stymied you, a frozen pay packet or the unwelcome attentions of the office viejo verde who fancies himself in the bottom-pinching line. Best to stay sshtum!

stupid, I mean really?

Sometimes it is far better or even essential for a woman not to lose face. For example: your man goes away on an overnight business trip and you get back home after dinner with friends to find you’ve left the *¿@! keys inside the house. Calling the locksmith is out of the question, you’ll be seen as incompetent; no instead you quietly smash a window. This is much harder than it looks on TV, but nobody notices. Following a sleepless night guarding the broken window, you have the new glass put in sharpish and are careful to sweep up every last splinter, otherwise he’s sure to see it. (When he gets back from his trip, he’s concerned about the bags under your eyes. Unable to ‘fess up; you mumble crassly that you can’t sleep when he’s not there).

Honey, I shrunk the kids Kids are the second most amazing thing that ever happened in our lives. But when they have a problem, one out of five mums

Girls always talk about relationships

Warnings of "You wait till your father gets home" often go without punishment.

What's in the fridge to nibble on?

When your secrets are found out, there are two possible gambits to the end game. One is based on the premise that admission of guilt = the fun’s over = boring, so you dig in your heels and put off the final moment with a deadpan look followed by a distraction technique, e.g., the fly-in-yoursoup ploy, or answering the nonexistent incoming call on your mobile. Gambit two is to throw in the towel: you choose a good moment and confess all. With a bit of luck, you may move, like

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, onto a higher plane in your relationship. If some of this sounds familiar, don’t feel bad. Frenchmen, supposedly the ultimate authority on the romance front - (although surveys report they’re lousy in bed) - believe that women should keep five per cent of their psyches hidden from men in order to maintain the feminine mystique. Suggestions for a French role model, anyone? 

Women with extra weight around the middle are often described as apple body shapes. Enough of the round fruit comparisons; today you can begin your journey to a fabulous flat stomach!

Pooch

Belly

BY MILLIE JONES

It may still be the beginning of the year, but is it ever too soon to prepare for summer skinny dipping? Not if you want to squeeze into that slim swimsuit or go bikini bare! And especially not if you want to get rid of that stubborn belly fat! There are a variety of exercises that promise to remove that extra poundage around the waist, but let’s be honest how many of us have seen a pot belly reduced to a six pack after the age 40 without surgery! Sure it’s easy enough to have a tight tummy when you begin with a relatively flat one, but what about those of us who have never had the flat belly to begin with? The sad fact is – for many of us; it feels like

there are some belly bulges that just won’t budge! Well guess what? It’s simply not the case; in fact, by adding certain foods and taking away others, (plus a little physical movement every now and then) you can have a super flat tummy in no time! Some women are more prone to belly fat than others but pointing at your mother saying, “It's all your fault!” Is not the answer even though there are claims that heredity can be the cause for more fat around the mid section. But it may also be due to hormones especially during or after menopause.

B FEATURE

Unfortunately to get our flat healthy stomachs we have to get rid of not just one, but two major types of fat that specifically hang around the mid section; subcutaneous and visceral.

resistance. This can then lead to coronary heart disease, vascular disease and stroke to mention just a few.

Subcutaneous fat is what you

“But I eat well and I work out every day, but I still can’t get rid of this belly!”

Visceral fat is very dangerous!

You might be eating well, but are you eating the right foods? The secret to success is a little thing called monounsaturated fatty acid, that’s right, FAT! In one of the most recent studies conducted at the Reina Sofia University Hospital, Cordoba Spain, they found by eating a diet high in monounsaturated fats helped ward off the accumulation of both types of belly fat and actually reduced it without the restriction of calories and no particular exercise routine.

can visibly see and pinch an inch or more of; we all need this to keep warm in the winter… yeah right that’s if we were bears! Some health professionals would say it’s not a bad thing to have a layer of fat under the skin, especially if you are older, while others believe fat is simply unhealthy. Basically the subcutaneous fat is not as dangerous as visceral fat but too much of it will create cellulite and ugly bulges! This fat clings to your major internal organs, like your heart and liver. It is a hidden fat that can even seek refuge in relatively thin people and will literally take years off your life, but not in the good way! Visceral fat is linked to Metabolic Syndrome which is a group of high risk symptoms, abdominal obesity; low HDL (the good cholesterol) and high LDL (the bad, plaque building cholesterol); high blood pressure, and insulin

super fats. Splash in a stir fry or mix in marinades, but make sure they’re in your daily diet! Super snacks like almonds, brazil nuts and walnuts are the perfect answer to fighting belly fat so sprinkle them on salads or add them to spreads and soups and stay off the bad fats, like creamy salad dressings and hydrogenated vegetable oils.

"The secret to success is a little thing called monounsaturated fatty acid, that’s right, FAT!"

MOCK COPY Do good fats reduce fat bellies? Yes!

What are the best monounsaturated fat foods? Prevention Magazine suggests five different foods that specifically target the abdominal area and which are all high in monounsaturated fats. Olive Oil seems to be hot on the list of just about every health craze lately and it’s especially true for burning belly fat! A variety of other oils such as canola oil, walnut oil and sesame oil are also

The oleic acid found in Avocados is exactly what you want to get rid of that LDL (bad cholesterol). Chopped with onions, tomatoes, cilantro and lime juice is not only deliciously good but especially good to target your waistline. Black or green olives which ever takes your fancy, but did you know it`s the same olive only one is left to ripen longer than the other? High in Vitamin E and Iron it's a great source of monounsaturated fat and can be enjoyed in healthy sauces, salads or even as snacks. Dark chocolate has the green light for a healthy food, but it’s important not to go overboard, this isn’t a license to binge and it has to be dark chocolate not milk or dark chocolate eaten with milk according to Mauro

Serafini, PhD. from Italy's National Institute for Food and Nutrition Research in Rome, “Our findings indicate that milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate ... and may therefore negate the potential health benefits that can be derived from eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate.” The antioxidants found in dark chocolate are what specifically target all those nasty free radicals. If you’re looking for a specific diet to tone down that tummy try Prevention Magazine’s Flat Belly Diet and log onto prevention.com where you will find even more information and recipes to burn off that belly fat!

Avoid alcohol! Alcohol has the exact opposite effect on visceral fat and has been shown to actually increase it, you don’t have to go tea total, but you do need to restrict that glass of wine to once a week or so while you’re trying to battle the belly bulge. And don’t think that spirits are the answer as they have proven to be even worse! Your body has to work too hard on detoxing the alcohol and doesn´t have the time or energy to work on unhealthy fat! The Mayo Clinic offers a couple of work out solutions that directly target belly fat, because believe it or not traditional sit ups are not the best way to get a flat

belly! There are much more effective exercises that concentrate on your deeper and lower abdominal muscles. For the deeper

abdominal muscles

try “abdominal hollowing” or “drawing in the belly button.” First, get down on all fours. Let your tummy hang down as you take a deep breath. Let your breath out, and at the end of your exhalation, gently draw your belly button inward and upward toward your spine. You should feel a slight tightening around your waist — think of it as trying to squeeze through a partially closed door. Hold for 10 seconds, and rest for 10 seconds. Work up to 10 repetitions. During each effort, your spine position shouldn’t change and you should breathe freely. Eventually, you’ll be able to do this exercise standing up. It’s so subtle; no one should be able to tell that you’re doing it. Tone your lower abdomen by doing pelvic tilts and pelvic lifts. To do a pelvic tilt, lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent. Flatten your back against the floor by tightening your abdominal muscles and bending your pelvis up slightly. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat five times and work up to 10 to 20 repetitions.

The Minute

GourmetChef BY DANTE GETANO

It’s a strange and somewhat funny position I am in; as I stand perusing the shelves searching for a particular olive oil from Northern Spain for my latest dish, I can honestly say, this would have been the last thing on my mind, pre-marriage! I think myself fortunate to have only two terminologies describing my adult life; single and married. Thank god terms such as divorced, widowed or simply (or not so simply) in a long term relationship never applied... Thinking back to when I was just a kid living with my parents I really didn’t think twice about where the next meal was going to come from. In fact; I don’t ever recall being even slightly interested as to how it came to be sitting in front of me, ready to be scoffed. What I did know however was there was a set time and place for meals and as long as I was there, it was available for my consumption free of charge. Back to reality, necessity; that’s all that it really takes, also I’ve come to realize that our adaptability as humans allows the domestically challenged to actually give it a go! However, I have to be honest, I don’t remember my dad ever setting foot in the kitchen, yeah, he cooked an excellent BBQ, but the real kitchen cooking was left to the one who knew how to do it, mum! This brings me to the meaty topic of my article. I was raised with a strong belief there was a man of the house who had certain responsibilities - ergo my father! This respected male figure whose responsibility laid in the safety and financial well being of

the family. He secured a decent job or business that produced a certain amount of stability with a home, a couple of cars and other assurances. As long as my father stuck to the motto of being a good provider, the rest followed. Meanwhile I found myself on more than one occasion, having to break that mould to survive. There were many periods where we enjoyed stability and what people refer to as normal. On the other hand we also went through quite a few difficult and uncertain times where we had to improvise and change our roles to better serve the family unit. I remember the first meal I cooked for my wife. I think my daughter was too young to remember but it was a simple dish of rice and ground beef, a sort of Kebab and they ate it, as tough as the meat was and as dodgy as the rice turned out, I’m surprised that I had the courage

to cook again, but there you go, necessity. You see, we went through a period where I was at home taking care of our daughter

"I don’t remember my dad ever setting foot in the kitchen, yeah, he cooked an excellent BBQ, but the real kitchen cooking was left to the one who knew how to do it, mum!" while my wife was working. We had decided that at least one of us should always be at home while our daughter was growing up and since my wife had a better paying job and I could still do some work from home, it worked out better this way. What I did realize from that point on was the role of a father or a husband is very much different from what we were brought up to believe, and rightfully so. My wife and I share everything; that means cooking, cleaning, changing the baby’s diapers, whatever needs to be done, we did! Throughout the years I matured from a basic cook, you know the type; the occasional barbecue

or quick omelette, to a more courageous chef. The fact is - I really enjoy food, I love the different spices that bring out certain flavours in a dish and I really look forward to coming up with a meal that my family enjoys. I still think sometimes I sound a bit feminine to fuss over things that involve words such as flavours and aromas, yada yada yada, so on that point let me just add a wham bam dam that tastes good! Yet, here I am trying to find the olive oil that a friend of ours recommended from the Jerez region of southern Spain, The Cazorla Olive Oils, known for the aromatic nuances and mild but fruity taste, its natural flavour was what I needed to complete the shrimp salad I was preparing. By experimenting with different spices and herbs you soon realize that cooking is really not an exact science and an excellent dish is really a product of trial and error, patience and very good senses. Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m no chef, and I was only schooled by life’s circumstances, but I love good food and I think anyone that enjoys a great meal should give it a try. My most favourite dishes always contain meat or poultry bought from a butcher. On the

coast I usually seek out a British butcher, as they stock Irish beef and free range English chicken, simmered in a dish on low heat for hours marinating in exotic herbs and spices, YEAH THAT’S THE TICKET! Unless it’s steak (of course). In reality though, I find that there just isn’t enough time in the day to tend to a proper meal, so we resort to readymade foods or worse, takeaway! In the same time that it takes to wait for one of those alternatives, I figured out a way to cook a pot of rice, or make some pasta and in about 15 minutes, this way it’s easier to put an inexpensive and more appetizing meal together. The same applies to pasta, the Angel Hair or Togliatti variety, except you must add a few drops of olive oil to the water before you add the pasta, and of course you don’t need to steam pasta afterwards. The nice thing about pasta is that as in the case of noodles, (same preparation) you can mix it in a wok or big skillet with butter and cream sauces to allow the pasta or noodles to absorb the flavours. To make the dish a bit more exciting, I add a bit of grilled onion.

the base for a few dishes for busy weekdays. I make mine with a grilled onion and crushed garlic base, and prefer to add fresh basil, and tarragon to my free range chicken, cut up on the bone and place in a nice size pot filled with water enough to cover the meat. Add another quarter of fresh onion and if you can get away with it 2 cloves of crushed garlic, 2 spoons of olive oil, a spoonful of lemon juice and some spring onions chopped up into the pot. Boil covered on medium heat, keeping an eye on it till it comes to a boil (as it may froth up over the top) and reducing it down to low heat for about 15 minutes. Peel and chop some potatoes into 2 inch pieces and boil separately in a pot of water. Cook the potatoes for 15 minutes or till you can easily pierce with a fork. Turn off the hob and let the chicken sit covered for a while till it cools down to touch. Remove all of the chicken from the pot; make sure there are no bones left in the pot. De-bone the chicken and remove any skin, cut up the chicken into little pieces, keep the majority for later in a storage container, make sure you add some of the stock to cover the chicken, and then refrigerate after it’s completely cooled down or freeze for later use. Add: The rest of the chicken to the pot, add half a cup of peas, the potatoes, some canned,

peeled but whole tomatoes (cut them up into quarters) and if you want to make it with noodles, add some angel hair pasta, broken into a quarter of their normal length and leave covered on low heat for 10 minutes. There you have a great chicken soup, and your extra meat for making a chicken sandwich or adding it later to rice or pasta. Our roles may have changed a bit, but it’s only a matter of substitution and not exclusion. The role of being a protector and provider has always been there for me and I believe most real men out there still guard their family with their life, but as our duty of being the financial source has been lessened thanks to our partner’s contributions, it is only fair that we share their typical responsibilities. Who knows you may realize that you actually have a knack for cooking and really enjoy it, I do!

We all know there are certain foods we should avoid in order to have great skin, but if you also know what the best foods are to eat - it can put you way ahead of the game.

BY MILLIE JONES

It's a

Berry

Good thing

for

You

and your

Skin At this time of year, you’ll notice that berries are more abundant and it’s a good thing too, because they are one of the super foods for super skin! They’re sweet, juicy and pack a powerful punch of phytochemicals. High levels of antioxidants are found in most berries including: blue berries, strawberries and raspberries. These antioxidants protect your skin cells from all sorts of damaging elements like free radicals.

Blueberries for example, have one of the highest levels of Anthocyanins which have been the topic of many research studies into cancer prevention, anti ageing, diabetes and even neurological diseases. Black raspberries, strawberries and cranberries have also shown to be highly productive in combating inflammation and bacterial infections. It was the University of Pittsburgh that conducted a study in 2007 revealing that Anthocyanins found in black raspberries effectively killed human cancer cells without harming healthy cells. There are many other benefits of berries including the ability to inhibit memory loss as well as other degenerative diseases. Apparently the deeper the colour the better the berry! But let’s get back to skin! The underlying supporting structure of the skin is collagen which is maintained by Vitamin C. The bad news is sun exposure, stress and other environmental issues can cause the depletion of this vital vitamin - but the good news is strawberries can help significantly. In fact; strawberries contain an unusually high level of vitamin

C! A small bowl of sliced strawberries has more vitamin C than a glass of orange juice! You’ll notice that in most anti-ageing creams or solutions there is a healthy amount of vitamin C added particularly for the purpose of increasing collagen and plumpness of the skin. Strawberries especially have a unique content namely phenols known for protecting the heart and anti-inflammatory properties. Overall strawberries in your diet will help lessen your risk of sallow skin and cancer which is definitely a good thing!

"Oh, go ahead, indulge in a bit of sinful delight... Nothing says I love you more than strawberries & Chocolate!" So how can you put these berries into your every day diet? Easy here are a few suggestions… and we have to add that these are so easy, there’s no excuse for not adding them to your diet from now on! The best thing to have on a hot summer’s day is berry compote, it’s so simple, all you have to do is grab a handful of every berry you like stick it in a bowl and chill for 20 minutes, serve it with some frozen yogurt and you can’t go wrong! Sprinkle some raspberries over your cereal in the morning! Scrumptious! Pack em and Snack em! Forget about all those icky bags of crisps and chips, prepare a bag of berries for your afternoon snack and you’ll feel the difference

like you can feel your body absorbing all the fruity goodness! Berry Smoothies! These are the absolute must for Summer and even for the rest of the year! If you don’t have a blender, get one! There’s no easier way to eat your daily dose of berries than in a smoothie! Add a base of apple or orange juice - this will soften the tartness of the berries. This has to be the healthiest thirst quenching drink ever!

The two huge screens were clearly on display, the lights were dimmed very slightly, the room was climate controlled and the seats were measured to provide luxury leg room for comfort. We were ready! And with a variety of speakers and demonstrations in waiting our first talk came from Dr. Kay of the Marbella Clinic who very kindly filled in last minute due to a cancellation. He did a marvellous presentation on facial cosmetic surgery, providing before and after images that made many of us gasp in unison. He mentioned both minimal and invasive techniques that captured the audience immediately and even though the talk went on a little longer than expected it was obvious that just about everyone enjoyed it.

Moving away from the surgical side of beauty and health we invited Dr. Hilu of the Hilu Institute to help us understand how he gets similar results without surgery though he was sure to add that both The Hilu Institute and the Marbella Clinic work complimentary to each other on many different areas. He gave a fabulous talk on cellular studies and explained how his techniques can have an overall impact on our health describing very unique methods to discover and deal with health problems. He was very well received and the information he gave was clear and comprehensive. Many of the audience showed an interest in talking further with Dr. Hilu after the presentation. We thought we’d mix it up a little at this event and asked Pilates Wellness & Energy to show us an actual Pilates mini class. Of course they couldn’t have all the equipment with them but they were able to bring along some of the exercise accessories to work with. Tea for two?

No milk for me thank you!

BY CINDY BARNES

I wake up to the sun streaming in through the shutters and with a sigh of content I reluctantly release my dream like state. It’s time for this member of ´club duvet´ to wriggle out of the snug embrace with the security of knowing that I have a lifetime membership. Two of the happiest members of the gang bouncing around at my feet like ebony and ivory singing the same old tune, tails wagging and excited little faces bathing me with adoration. My husband calls out to my daughter that it’s time to get up and as she acknowledges sleepily, he knows that she is going to sneak in another 10 minutes and he will have to follow with a further wake up call. I open up the kitchen door and the fluff balls fly out, hit the lawn and cock their legs in unison. Leaning against the terrace railing I look at them with fondness. I breathe in the lovely cool fresh air and feel inclined to practice a few deep and meaningful breathing exercises. As I turn to go inside I catch the wonderful view across the golf course to the sea in the background. It’s time to feed the dogs and get brekkies ready for my husband and daughter who will soon be making the school run – a chosen routine for ‘quality time’ together. I think of the ceramic figure hanging on the wall in the bathroom of a father with his daughter on his shoulders with the quote below “Anyone can be a father but it takes someone special to be a Daddy”, something that has not gone

unnoticed as it was a gift to him from her. The dogs are crunching away and GMTV is on in the background, the showers are running and everything is as it should be and ‘it’s feeling good.’ Time to go and on cue I get my farewells and declaration of love from my daughter with a reminder to collect her at the designated time. All of forty five minutes have passed and I have experienced all the happy senses feeling so grateful for having experienced them. So why do I trudge downstairs to the kitchen and suddenly feel so miserable and deprived? What could possibly have spoilt my perfect picture? NOT being able to have a cup of tea – Yes – a cup of tea! A lovely hot cup of tea with milk and sugar. A blood test result confirmed that I am lactose intolerant i.e. I can no longer milk the cow and enjoy her lovely white liquid because it makes me feel icky and the mucus at the back of my throat is yucky. Now I realise that in order to feel better I have got to give up having my good old cuppa that has cheered me up for so many years. Sounds easy – NOT! It’s the cherished memory of good feelings, of social moments and of comfort during good times and bad times. O.k. so I know that I can still have my hot cup of tea without the milk but it's like having apple pie without cream. Next thing I am told is that I can replace the milk with soy milk, but there is just no joy in soy.

B COLUMN So here I am in my 50th year - in pause for the menopause and not very tolerant about being lactose intolerant. I had to go surfing again as I needed to know why, what, where and to share. Thank goodness we have the internet for information on tap.

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE: The symptoms of lactose intolerance are caused by undigested lactose (milk sugar) passing into the colon. It’s caused by a deficiency of, or absence of lactase, the enzyme that digests milk. Common symptoms, which range from mild to severe, include nausea, cramps, bloating, gas, and diarrhoea. The above are a lot more serious than my mild attack as my experience has been slight nausea after a cup of tea and it simply does not taste as good as it used to. I have been told to give up milk for a month. I am no longer inclined to whinge as this lactose intolerance could be a lot more serious judging by the above symptoms. I’m still feeling miserable and deprived but I will get over it. I need to find solace in a cup of rooibos (red bush) and honey or a cup of poleo menta. When the month is up I am sure that I will be ‘out of love’ with my good old ‘cup of tea.’ While we are on the subject of ‘feel good feelings’ …nothing could beat this time of the year. From now until Christmas day we will celebrate in so many ways i.e., office parties, Christmas bonuses, Christmas fetes, charitable contributions, end of school term, holidays, family gatherings and more.

The joy starts on the first day of December with the decorating of the Christmas tree, when your home transforms into a magical tinsel palace that reflects in the eyes of the beholders. When you look into the eyes of children you will see the brightness and joy that lies within them – a happiness that is beyond measure. This is a time when we feel the intensity of security, love and appreciation - a time when family is the priority above all else. Sending out Christmas cards to friends and family that you hold dear, and not forgetting the people that have been of service to you throughout the year. The nativity plays are rehearsed and played by children all over the world, re-enforcing our respect for beliefs and traditions. The most favourite of all, being the Christmas Eve arrival of Santa who manages to suck in his tummy for the decent down the chimney. The cookies and milk are placed next to the fireplace and as he happily tucks in, he smiles with appreciation for the consideration shown. All those grateful little children giving Santa an endless supply of cookies and milk – it's no wonder that Santa has to suck his tummy in! While on the subject of milk… all I want for Christmas is a proper ‘cup of tea.’ Yes please! With milk and one sugar.

Be Lean,

go with the “New Super Fast Food!”

Green

Jeni Cook, Natural Nutritionist and raw food health educator gives the green light on vegetable fruit smoothies!

People often say to me, “I want to begin a healthy diet but what should I be eating in the mornings? This happens more often in the New Year, when everyone is more health conscious and ready to start the New Year with a new lifestyle! They need to know how to start the day off, what will give them enough energy and nutrients to get through the day, that has little or no calories. My answer is always the same – “A smoothie!” But not just any smoothie…, I’m talking “The Great Green Smoothie!” Green has changed dramatically from what we used to consider a rather gross colour and has been completely re-invented. Yes, it’s

happened! Eco Friendly Green has become a wonder colour, it is recognized the world over for being earth friendly, from fashion to cars green is taking over and fortunately when it comes to food the benefits are overwhelming. No longer is it considered a rather unappealing sometimes even gross colour, it now reflects a sense of goodness especially when it comes to food! Jam packed with nutrients it may not look the most appetizing, but green smoothies are actually very tasty - as well as being very nutritious. They not only provide the huge amounts of vitamins and minerals but they also give us the healthy carbohydrates, phytochemicals, and chlorophyll. Green smoothies are also an excellent source of fibre. A perfect way to help maintain a healthy diet and weight loss programme - it’s without a doubt my favourite way to start the day. What goes into a green smoothie?

The best ingredients are a blend of ripe organic fruit mixed with organic greens such as spinach, kale, chard, romaine lettuce, parsley, celery, and other dark green leafy vegetables. The ratio being about 60% fruit to 40 % greens, although for me the ratio is more like 20% fruit to 80% greens as I prefer a less sweet flavour. You might say to yourself - but I drink a lot of juice so I don’t need a smoothie! Juices are great, but the difference between a juice and a green smoothie in particular is that the green smoothie is a complete food source because the fibre is still contained. This means; it is a perfect meal replacement and it’s the fibre that is very important for our elimination system. Being full of enzymes, vitamins and minerals, smoothies not only provide all the daily nutrients you require but also keep you more satisfied for longer thus preventing the temptation to go for unhealthy options

in between meals. Why green smoothies in particular, don’t they taste, well, of greens? I haven’t met one person who eats a standard diet that didn’t like the taste of a green smoothie, in fact they are usually quite surprised at how amazing it tastes. Even children and babies of six months and up love them. Due to the ratio of fruits to greens as 60:40 the fruit flavour dominates the leafy green taste, but the greens actually balance out the sweetness of the fruit. Regular fruit smoothies are unarguably very tasty, but the amount of concentrated fruit sugar can upset blood sugar levels, this can cause great concern for people who have diabetes and other blood sugar issues. Without getting too scientific, green vegetables make the body more alkaline and support our homeostatic balance in the most optimal way.

This will actually aid the weight loss process by helping to eliminate cravings for processed and fatty foods. Green smoothies are quick and easy to make and if kept in a cool environment or refrigerator they can last for up to 3 days, which is handy for busy people who work or travel. If you drink a smoothie on an empty stomach avoiding any cooked foods you won’t have that acid feeling which is normally caused by poor food combining. Greens are the only foods that combine well with fruit and aid digestion. It’s best to wait at least an hour before eating other types of food such as a cooked meal. By doing nothing else but adding a green smoothie to one’s daily diet, I have witnessed in clients dramatic weight loss; increase in energy; the elimination of digestive problems, and improvement in numerous health issues. It’s worth giving it a try; you will be amazed at the taste and health benefits.

What to be careful of!!

Drinking too quickly, sometimes this can cause a stomach upset, drink it slowly, don’t just knock it back!

Having the exact same blend every day can be slightly toxic due to the alkaloids, so just be sure to mix it up a little!

Always make sure you blend the vegetables with fruits, not only is the taste an awful lot nicer, but it will avoid a build up of calcium oxalate, which is an insoluble salt!
