Surprisingly not on the color trend list 2012 we’ve seen this rich earthy hue appear all over the red carpet this year. EDITOR’S LETTER You’ll notice two common threads in this month’s Style N’ Beauty Mag, London and black & white two tone. I have fond memories of two tone being the greatest fashion trend in the eighties; we all had super large Alice headbands on our perfectly shaped bobbed haircuts, the make-up was heavy black eyeliner with super pale lipstick and nails had to have black or white polish. I loved the look then and I love it now minus the heavy black eyeliner, pale lipstick and white nail polish! We search the world for the best in fashion trends, for the outfits that beg the question, “Where did you get that from?” You and I will secretly know they’re not going to find it at the mall! On page 32 we found an excellent selection of skirts that offer a change from the short and sweet summer dress. We have a great feature on London this issue on page 16, giving you a brief glance into the world of us Brits and we got a bit sporty too with Ascot and Wimbledon - all in preparation for the upcoming Olympics. Due to the tremendous response for the Upscale vs. Sweet Deal Section we have decided to bring you the best of both worlds each and every month. Thanks for letting us know our picks are better than most other mags, also most morning TV shows too! I actually purchased one of the looks and if I do say so myself – it is fabulous – I’m not saying which one I bought of course, but I will tell you it’s on page 28-30! Beauty is one of our specialties and last month we attended the Premiere Show in Orlando. On page 53, you’ll see we had a super tight schedule to get the scoop on the latest trends in professional beauty and some of the best hair designs would literally make your hair stand on end! We’re not going to bombard you with a thousand different beauty products to complicate an already confusing and overwhelming market. Instead we pick only a few particular skincare superstars and tell why they will work for you. This month we focus on protect, smooth and soothe on page 45. Who would have thought with all the rhetoric surrounding Angelina Jolie’s sexy leg exposé, it would kick start a serious trend among the most beautiful women worldwide? When the famously exposed leg of Angelina Jolie first revealed itself at the Academy Awards to much fanfare, the leg then went viral and was found photo-shopped all over the world in various predicaments, and as funny as it all seemed just a couple of months ago, the fact is, it has clearly started a protruding trend among superstars and supermodels. General Hospital walked away with Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (Anthony Geary), Outstanding Supporting Actress (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Jonathan Jackson) and literally swept the awards show for this year. However, we have to say that even if Days of Our Lives only secured a few awards in Casting, Make-up and Outstanding Young Actor (Chandler Massey) the female cast certainly looked like winners on the red carpet!

“It’s Piccadilly Circus out there!” A phrase often used among us Brits to describe how the energy of the city is abuzz with life. The bustling streets lined with bright lights and billboards, all witness to people dashing through tightly knit crowds with barely an inch to stay on path. The never ending round-a-bouts that carry cars and cabbies in a circular flow with brakes screeching and horns honking like there’s no tomorrow – all in a desperate rush to get somewhere and yet appearing to get nowhere in a hurry. Through the noise of the traffic you can hear the fruit and veg’ sellers yelling for your attention to buy the freshest Granny Smith Apples you’ll ever find, all for a pound – and without fail – while you’re hailing a cab or jumping into the subway, you’ll literally bump into someone with their head buried in the beloved Evening Standard, London’s recently refreshed city paper. It’s a term fondly used when everything around you is jam packed, but still moving at such a fast and furious speed it could make your head spin!
Yes, London 2012 is “Piccadilly Circus”, for us Brits. With royalty events galore, and world class sporting events that captured the likes of media attention unheard of before, it’s been a busy year and we’re not even half way through the fun yet! Style N’ Beauty Magazine 17
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Style Icon The Flotilla ensemble was designed by an unknown name in the fashion world, Angela Kelly. The Queen favoured her designs when she was hired as part of the royal team of dressers and for one reason or another, Angela was singled out to become the first
JUBILEE CONCERT FLAT NOTE WITH For the Queen´s Diamond Jubilee Concert, Andrew Lloyd Webber (West End Maestro) and Gary Barlow (Take That) co-created the song, ´Sing´ and dedicated it to Her Majesty in celebration of her 60 year reign. The Concert featured many well-known performing artists and the audience were treated to a magnificent electric light show that beamed pictures across the facade of Buckingham Palace. Gary Barlow sang a duet with Cheryl Cole who sadly, (according to media) was flat and out of tune. As distraught as she was with her royal performance, she was quickly reminded of her strong fan base when the new release of her song, ´Call my name´ shot to #1 in the UK. 18 Style N’ Beauty Magazine
Soon followed several chat show interviews and performances of her latest hit. Late night tv host Graham Norton questioned Cheryl if she had kissed and made up with Simon Cowell, to which she replied, “I can´t say I´ve kissed Simon, but I´ll tell you one thing he can kiss …!” Take that Simon! Only 18 days after Cheryl was hired to be an X Factor Judge in Los Angeles, she was asked to leave. It may have been her look, her accent or
HITS A CHERYL! maybe that she was unknown here, but America just didn’t want to get to know her. As any good businessman prepares for a fall out, Simon made sure American pop singer Nicole Scherzinger was waiting in the wings to take her place. One year later and sure enough Nicole has been replaced by none other than Britney Spears!! Cheryl Cole wore a strapless Eva Minge mermaid gown that I thought was a little too stiff and formal. I would rather have seen her in something more youthful and trendy rather than a gown that looks much better suited to an opera singer.

ever Personal Assistant to the Queen – some say it’s because of the close bond of friendship they share that always seems to put the Queen at ease. It’s an interesting story and possible fodder for a future book. The coat and matching hat, a signature style of the Queen, was in white bouclé with scattered confetti spots of gold, ivory and silver. Sparkling Swarovski crystals were delicately placed on both coat and wide swept brim hat; although the hand dyed feathers on the hat were the real crowning glory. This was my favorite of all Jubilee outfits. It took more than a year to make and the Queen at 86 looked sensational in it.

NEW DRESS CODE Bless the Brits and their new formal dress codes for Royal Ascot! If truth be told, it has been a long time coming. Where once a scowl alone would make you think twice about how you dressed to this most traditional of all English events, over the years, the attendees got rowdier, the dresses got shorter, and the overall appeal of high society became less than middle of the road for many. Minis are out, covered shoulders are in and skimpy fascinators (less than a 4 inch base) are frowned upon in the royal enclosure, even men are under scrutiny and no longer permitted to wear cravats as neck attire. All ticket holders were given full details prior to the event, but just in case one forgot, there were actual dress code assistants trained to monitor unsatisfactory ensembles and if necessary, provide the correct accoutrement to resolve the wardrobe faux pas! Under
HM Queen Elizabeth II has a special place in her heart for the races and has owned many Royal Ascot Champions. This year in hopes of a continuous celebration of her Diamond Jubilee, the royal family watched in anticipation the Queens own colt Carlton House run in the Prince of Wales stakes; unfortunately her favorite thoroughbred didn’t win but did come in a very close second. On the upside everyone was delighted to see Prince Phillip back on the road to recovery alongside his Queen.

QUINTESSENTIAL KELLY Although she’s moving into Hollywood with a new house in Los Angeles, Kelly Brook is a larger than life celebrity in the UK, probably comparable to the likes of Kim Kardashian, but without the sex tapes. Attending Royal Ascot with a close friend, Kelly looked the epitome of an English rose in a stunning hat from world renowned milliner Philip Treacy and pretty floral dress by Jacques Azagury. There have only been two men in the history of Wimbledon Championships to reach 7 single men’s titles, but only one in the last hundred years, until now. Roger Federer matched Pete Sampras’ record by beating Andy Murray and collecting his seventh win to round off his unequalled 17 Grand Slam Titles. Proclaimed as the greatest tennis player ever to play the game – Roger fell to the grass, sank tears into the palm of his hands in triumph and sharing the moment with his family, looked over to his wife holding their two 3 year old twins and smiled. At age 30 winning Wimbledon elevated Roger once again as the world’s top ranked player, and as of July 16, 2012 he celebrated a new landmark of having an unprecedented 287 weeks as world No.1.
Touted as one of the most exciting years in Wimbledon history, 2012 made and matched many – what some thought to be – unbeatable records.
SERENA COMES BACK SWINGING Serena Williams back at the All England Club two years after her last win collapsed on centre court in complete euphoria after finally winning again this year. It was a moment shared with sister Venus as each lay claim to five Wimbledon Championship singles titles. A few hours later and together they win their fifth Doubles Championships. At age 70 the father of the Williams powerhouse pair is expecting another baby with his third wife and when asked if he would be training another prodigy, he simply said he’s finished creating tennis stars! For the first time in 40 years, Prince Charles dropped in to watch Federer play earlier in the tournament, and he wasn’t alone. Anna Wintour, Vogue Editor in Chief would rather miss a fashion show than miss Roger play. We all witnessed her larger than life sunglasses stare down centre court as if to single handedly will Roger to win. The handsome as ever David Beckham looked positively thrilled at the possibility of seeing a Brit win the Championship, but who really knows what wife Victoria was thinking? It could have been a multitude of emotions all hiding beneath the look of preponderance that we all know and love her for. The most impressive show of all was the welcomed appearance of two other famous sisters, Kate (who did earlier attend with Prince William) and Pippa. Surely there to support the Andy Murray frenzy, they reveled in the incredible atmosphere of cheering him on, but were (as one would expect) gracious to the end, acknowledging the tremendous talent of the one and only Roger Federer.
Perhaps the most exciting moment of all has been more than 80 years in the making… a Brit in the finals. Looking at Andy Murray today, it’s easy to forget he was one of the many children who experienced the dark day of Dunblane 16 years ago. The small village primary school that came under gunfire, leaving 18 dead and 15 injured is a distant memory for us, but still very present in the hearts of a Dunblane native. The example of Scottish strength and resilience never more evident than that sad and shocking time. Andy Murray has become the darling of Dunblane with all their hopes and dreams hanging on the very balance of his success at Wimbledon.

The truth is – he has already fulfilled one part of the dream by conquering Tsonga in the semi-finals to reach the finals and play Roger Federer. As Roger so eloquently mentioned in his acceptance speech, it’s only a matter of time before Andy gets his grand slam. We’ll wait.
RAFA SHOCKA!
Wimbledon favorite Rafa Nadal shocked tennis fans when a virtually unknown Lukas Rosol slammed him with unreachable serves over 130 mph and swept the game from under him. You could see the frustration begin to set in on Rafa’s face as this warrior performance became a battle of testosterone. Not for the faint hearted – it was an edge of your seat game that Rafa fans hoped would have a different outcome. On the upside, Rafa had enough to be thankful for winning his seventh French Open title just a few weeks prior. While tennis is his love, his mistress La Roja (as many call the Spanish Soccer team) took the European Cup in a record breaking game days later and he joined hundreds of thousands of Spanish fans who took to the streets in celebration. 24 Style N’ Beauty Magazine

The brands that exhibit here are either staple brands that have new products in their lines to introduce to the health, nail and beauty industry, or new companies trying to make the right impression to entice distributors, salons and beauty professionals to carry their products.

The event is filled with demonstrations, on stage theatre, and hundreds of new product launches, here is an insider’s view of a typical day at the show.
9:00 AM
Arrive at the show and start the search for promising new brands that can change the way our skin ages, our hair can be transformed and our nails can make a statement. Every show has a good floor plan that divides into specific sections that make it easier to navigate the aisles, the smaller shows however, like Premiere Orlando are more condensed and tend to place several different categories next to each other. The problem with this design is that you can get easily distracted by stands you didn’t originally intend to visit and quickly lose track of time.
10:30 AM Only visited one stand at this point when we should have seen at least five or six! Now it’s too late to try and catch up because the first stage show is starting and it’s one of our favorites, Paul Mitchell. As much as we would like to stay around the beauty stands, hair is the big focus here. At any one time there can be up to four different stylists on stage and they all take turns telling you what they’re doing and why you have to know about it.

We’ve listened to three stylists take turns with the on-stage hair presentation, all of whom did very well not to talk over each other while pulling and twisting the models hair. The new product launches that they’re all here to promote were used on the models giving great detail on each new item. For most people this could sound pretty boring, but for your hair stylist it’s great news they can put to use next time you visit them.

Had a quick run to the food kiosk and stuffed our face in a hurry to make it back to the main stage show.

We made our way to the brands that we had made appointments with 2 months ago. I specifically sought out hair products that were for hair straightening, but had no-formaldehydes in the ingredients.

Exhausted from having walked more than 10 miles of exhibit aisles in heels, I was beginning to lose patience with the lingering strays blocking my path. By the end of the day, I needed a tall Margarita on the rocks and a long soak before I have to do it all over again tomorrow.

Yee-haw Spa! High in the Rocky Mountains just outside of Granby, Colorado, the C Lazy U Dude Ranch operates one of the only “cowboy” spas in the country. The C Lazy You Spa is housed in five canvas miner’s tents connected by raised wooden walkways all clustered in a meadow along Willow Creek. Guests who come for three to seven days at the C Lazy U ranch can step out of their stirrups and into the luxury of a first-class spa, which is exactly what I did.

s I slid into the big copper tub, allowing the steaming water rise above my chin, I knew exactly how grateful saddle-weary cowboys must have felt a hundred years ago. The previous day, I’d spent three hours in the saddle trotting, loping, and galloping across sweeping valleys, through white-barked aspens, over rocky outcrops, and up steep mountainsides. And let me say right now, I’m not a cowgirl. While my horseback riding skills are pretty good, I don’t normally spend my day in the saddle and, when I woke the next morning, my legs, low back, and shoulders let me know it. Fortunately for me, the ranch offers a full-service spa, one that Denver Magazine has named “One of the Best 25 Spas” in the state. I’d signed up for the Cowboy Soak, 60 minutes in big airy tent soaking in a hammered copper tub with a view of the mountains, the creek, and a forever blue sky. My bath attendant had filled the six-foot tub with perfectly hot mineral water and I shucked my big, white robe and slipped in. Ah, perfect. My sore muscles practically sighed as the hot water eased their tension. As I drifted into the reverie of hot water, soothing flute music, and cobalt sky, I found myself watching puffy, white clouds lazily drift by; swallows with blue-green iridescent wings and golden bellies swooping and dipping

over the creek; willows and aspen leaves gently fluttering in the breeze. When the heat had soaked me through, I turned on the cold spigot and bathed my face, arms, and legs in the coolness. The breeze blowing through the open end of the tent provided natural air conditioning and felt refreshing against my hot skin. If the water felt too cool, I’d add a little hot water. As my relaxation deepened, clouds took on strange shapes. There was a duck, a dragon, a dog cloud morphing into a cowboy. I spent 20 minutes watching a fat white bit of vapor lazily inch its way past the center pole of my tent. This was all about nothing but relaxing, completely melting into the moment. By the time my masseuse called for me, I was struggling to keep my eyes open and my hands were waterpuckered. Next time, I’ll try the 35 minute pre-massage soak or maybe the Couple Cowboy Soak (one tub per person) complete with champagne and strawberries in the moonlight. Kneading Out the Kinks My long soak did wonders preparing me for my “Giddy Up” Traditional Swedish Massage. My therapist, Tracey, was a veteran with plenty of experience and training and enough muscle to immediately knead out the knot in my shoulder I’d gotten from trying to slow my enthusiastic horse. The C Lazy You Spa offers 60- and 80-minute Swedish massages in light, medium, or deep tissue strokes. I’d opted for medium and deep pressure and Trisha combined the two perfectly. My legs were incredibly sore from “posting,” rising up and down in the saddle during the trot. My wrangler’s horse had walked much faster than mine, but Shoshone hated to be left behind. So he trotted to catch up and I responded with the up-and-down post. My legs knew the whole story and my IT bands, those ropy strips of flesh that run down the outside of the legs, were taut as violin strings. Tracey gently and then more firmly stroked and kneaded this painful area. Then she lifted each leg, moving it to stretch my sore muscles. By the time I turned onto my back, the combination of the soak and the massage rendered me incapable of continuing an intelligent conversation with my masseuse. I surrendered completely to her ministrations and simply breathed and, occasionally, sighed deeply. After a full 60 minutes, my entire body felt relaxed and my muscle soreness had disappeared. Then she used a fine emery board and shaped my nails, carefully smoothing the edges and used a tiny scissor-like instrument to cut off any errant skin. She softened my cuticles and pushed them back into their proper place. She rubbed my arms and hands with an exfoliating scrub to remove any dead skin cells and massaged then with a delicious-smelling lotion. Then she had me plunge my hands into warm paraffin. “This will soften and moisturize your hands,” she told me. She was right. When she peeled away the cooled wax, my hands felt amazingly soft and supple. She rubbed pliable beeswax that smelled like

Now that I was completely relaxed (and a bit muddle-headed), it was time for the finishing touch, a manicure. Horseback riding and the dry air of high altitude mountains had done nothing good for my hands and nails. Lydia, a young nail therapist who also does facials at C Lazy You, brought out bowls of warm spring water to soak my hands. She closely examined my nails, declaring, “Nice nails” and asked what I’d like – standard manicure, French manicure, color, or no color.

Those rough, dry, ragged nails were perfect. My skin fairly shone from the treatment. Next time I think I’ll get one of the ranch’s many facial treatments too. of Alice in New York Each month Alice Holland will entertain us with her daily struggles to manage her new life in New York City. A Brief Introduction…
I moved to New York City almost one year ago, escaping the humdrum but secure life as a biological science researcher at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. However, almost as quickly as I arrived, I departed. The Music City was filled with amazing talent entertaining nightly in the hostel downstairs from my condo, but for a girl born and raised in England, it was hard to appreciate Tennessean life and I longed for something more. It took six months before I found myself jam packed into my friend’s car with my potted miniature rose in one hand and all my hopes and dreams in the other, headed for the greatest adventure of all, the Big Apple, New York, NY. Three months later I’m living in Harlem with no living room, barely a kitchen, no air conditioner in 90 degree heat and a cat that is determined to make my life hell. While I’m waiting to hear back from a promising position at Columbia University, I’m scraping by working at Starbucks all hours, just to hold on long enough until they make a decision. After two more months of waiting I’m informed that they “don’t have the finances” for me. Delightful! Having only saved up enough money for one month’s rent and a security deposit I was broke and beginning
to think my future in New York was looking bleak, besides the fact I was getting pummeled by New York life on a daily basis (as is the way if you move here with little money and no connections). Having so many people in such close proximity all the time, combined with blazing heat and subways with minimal air ventilation, a not so great day can turn into utter hell within minutes. It takes much patience and love for human kind to not push a man down the stairs, because he’s walking at a snail’s pace refusing to move out of the way – which in turn makes you miss your train, completely disrupting your finely tuned schedule for the next 3 hours. By this point even working at Starbucks didn’t raise the rent, so I had two choices: Borrow money from my possessive ex-boyfriend and fight the last good fight for a place that chews me up on a daily basis, or move back in with the parents in sunny Florida. Being the hopeful protagonist that I am, I chose the former. After a call with the ex-boyfriend assuring me he’s going to help and send money immediately, I suddenly can’t get hold of him and he disappears off the planet. Through sheer determination and a little luck I manage to land two more jobs within the week, one as a “creative enthusiast” in this peculiar arts and crafts store, and one at the American Museum of Natural History in Live Exhibits as “the Butterfly Girl” working in the butterfly vivarium. A week later I get frantic calls from the Ex telling me he had been thrown in jail and only just got out, but he could still send the money. I was happy to inform him that I didn’t need it and when he asked, “Why not?” I replied, “I did it on my own thanks”. The months following I’m happy to report were finally enjoyable and a lot less stressful. I was adapting to being a fun and perky girl to fit in with the artsy and theatrical types I had to work with and realized, after time, I

actually started to like it. A significant leap from the hermit lifestyle required from my previous work as a scientist, and ironically (and depressingly) more lucrative. I fell in love with the museum. But there was a downside, my work there was only seasonal, and though I held strong hopes they might find a way to keep me, I was finally let go. For months I tried for every position I was qualified for, though I soon realized each new opening position I applied for had realistically been taken months ago by someone waiting in line for it. What next? A really sweet friend of mine at the museum mentioned dog walking. I was admittedly apprehensive and not too thrilled about the demotion from scientist to dog walker, but the options were a familiar friend: Do what it takes to stay in NYC, or leave NYC. The problem is that this city has a kind of magic that makes it uniquely stand out from anywhere I’ve ever lived. Thanks to having gypsy like parents I’ve lived in many other cities and countries, travelling extensively, yet I
have never experienced a place like this. Here, the world is on your doorstep. Within this jungle are extremes of every variety, and everything in between. I have never been at breaking point so many times, and then filled with pure joy so quickly again. I’ve also never felt that anything is possible – the way I do here. Which translates to: For better or worse (time will tell I suppose) I am bound to this town. So, here I am world, an English girl in New York, the ex-biologist who now walks dogs that snort like pigs and smiles at children who throw paint on her all day. The most twisted curiosity in all this? I bloody LOVE this city!

Born in Finland, Niklas Rämö has developed his talent through years of study in Europe. Now residing in Miami, he has finely tuned his art by exploring the basic and fundamental desires of human nature, the results are uniquely definitive revealing his visual reality. From a very early age Nik was eager to explore the world of art, confidently dabbling in different mediums like photography and film. He produced some noted works such as his short films, (Eating Fish and Three men hanging.) In his initial works the influence of training with David Hosie (renowned British artist) was evident, but he still carried a primal infusion of raw emotion. Today his work is clearly portrayed in his artistic ability and ranges from abstract to in-depth, utilizing different media to portray his internal expression of aesthetic pursuit.
