Skin Commandments V Respect that it is an organ, an external organ. V Attempt to create skin health as opposed to just hydrating the skin topically. V Prevention is better than cure, so start treating yesterday not tomorrow. Protect. V Respect the fact that it is the only line of defence we have from the outside world of pollution, environmental damage, and UV rays. And the last layer to keep the good inside. V Realise that stress, medication, toxins, overcooked foods, soap and shower gel all impacts the skin and causes it to age unnecessarily. V Know that we will all age, the rate at which we do is debatable. V Cleanse the skin daily, right into the hairline, down as far as the breasts, most people apply bronzer down that far; yet don’t remove it from there - resulting in nasty comedones. V Treat the body like it is the face. V Investigate the make-up your clients use. Ensure it is not actually adding to their skin issues and complaints. Try chosing a brand that will help treat it. V Consider the food we are eating, ‘We are what we eat’, or as some say ‘We are only as healthy and as pretty as the good food we eat’. V Consider that some stubborn skin conditions can be internal and may need work from the inside out rather than anything else. V Perhaps consider food intolerance tests for you clients, or advising them, many rashes, acne, redness etc. can be due to food we consume daily and think nothing of. V Don’t over exfoliate the skin, the skin is ultimately there for protection, if we strip it too much we not only irritate the skin but from a health perspective it increases the risk of leaving it open, compromised and vulnerable to other substances, such as chemicals and the environment. V Realise that you are exposed to UVA rays indoors and outdoors. V Skin areas that are often neglected from moisturisers and sunscreen are the lips and ears, yet they are the areas that are increasingly prone to Skin Cancer. V Call sunscreen ‘light protection’ so that clients soon learn they need assistance all year round. V Would you advise washing your face with soap every day? Then why do we recommend soap for the body? V Don’t strip an oily skin, keep it hydrated. Educate the client that they need moisture not oil. V The more knowledge you have - the more sales you will have. Be a firm believer in training. V Know that pigmentation can take up to 40 years to manifest itself V Know the difference between dry and dehydrated skin. V Drink water. Your skin cells are made of water.

Bronwyn Conroy looks at the latest in skin training

In 2013 the beauty industry enjoyed a slow but steady improvement, allowing many salon owners to start thinking about growth again and not just struggle to survive. To run a business you need to know about business and how to market your business. Short courses in business and social media management were very popular. The emphasis on training is very important as clients are more discerning, and they expect their therapist to be able to advise them on every aspect of their health and beauty regime. Ten years ago therapists left college, entered the industry and worked away quite happily. Today the emphasis is on up skilling to keep at the top of your game. We need to be constantly improving our knowledge to keep ourselves focused and to keep our skills up-to-date.

I have always been anti-modulised training, as I really believe that a good therapist has to have an overall comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of beauty as opposed to only learning specific treatments. The training only commences in college, to keep learning and growing it is essential to keep up-skilling. Continuing professional development is common to most professions and is a structured approach to learning to help ensure competence. Therapists are now very aware of how important it is to their careers to continue their training and expand their knowledge and skills base. Short course trends in 2013 in eyebrow grooming, threading, eyelash extensions, nail enhancements/art, tanning and specialised waxing are now considered a must for therapists and will continue into 2014.
