EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS

FOR IRISH INSURANCE BROKER

CND CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY WITH EXHIBITION AT CALIFORNIA’S OCEANSIDE MUSEUM OF ART Celebrating 40 years of product breakthroughs and innovations, CND has brought the Tiny Canvases: The Art of Nails exhibition to the public at Oceanside Museum of Art in California in the US. Showcasing the talent of the nail professional, Tiny Canvases takes people on a journey through the world of CND from the humble beginnings in a California garage, to leading global nail brand. Visitors can enter through the looking glass of the History Room, where they’ll find the Research and Development table, which displays CND’s biggest innovations from the past 40 years. There they can find out what made SolarOil the ‘miracle manicure in a bottle’, the Retention + system, and how the game-changing CND Shellac was created. The exhibition also features the artists and how they created some of the most spectacular nail designs for Fashion Weeks and celebrities. On display is The Blonds Original Couture Ruby Red Corset. This piece was created for The Blonds AW18 New York Fashion Week Show using CND Shellac Wildfire applied to tips and adorned with 1000s of Swarovski Crystals, which were all hand placed. This was then gifted to CND by David and Phillipe Blond to mark the Ruby Anniversary.

CREATING SOME BROW MAGIC WITH BROW TYCOON A new beauty treatment has taken the industry by storm, led by the team at Bronze Direct. Brow Tycoon henna brows was only launched into the market by Gerry McBride and Joe McGlinchey last May and the brand has already become established as a leading brow brand across Ireland. “Tinting both the hair and skin, Brow Tycoon henna gives clients the opportunity to create expressive eyebrows whilst camouflaging gaps in over-tweezed or sparse eyebrows,” says managing director Gerry McBride. “With henna, you can temporarily tint your eyebrows in a painless and all-natural way so they’re shaped every morning with no need for pencils or powders. It’s also a really great way to trial a shape before you commit to cosmetic tattooing or microblading. Brow Tycoon henna is a safe and natural alternative to tints and dyes as they are free from ammonia, lead, and hydrogen peroxide, which makes them a suitable option for clients with sensitive skin.” As featured on Xposé, the range offers 12 colours that give the brows an amazing powdered tattoo effect that can last up to two to six weeks depending on client skin type and aftercare; with the treatment taking no more than about 45 minutes to complete. Following on from the success of its henna brow launch, Bronze Direct introduced a new brow lamination training and product range to the Irish market. Brow lamination is another new treatment for the brows that can be used to tame unruly brows or create the ‘fluffy brow’ look that’s all the trend on the catwalks and fashion magazines recently. Both treatments are now widely available in salons across Ireland.

The top most watched workshops from GVAS were Essentials: Facial Analysis – Every Face is Unique; as well The Masters – Mid Face and Periorbital; the workshop on Full Face; and the session on Upper Face and Temples. “GVAS has been a dream of mine for a long time. It was a massive effort to put together, with years of planning and hours and hours of working with so many different countries and regions,” said Stephen Handisides, director of GVAS and MyFace MyBody. “As a result of this, the event has been a phenomenal success, exceeding all of our expectations. Virtual visitors attended from countries all over the world.” Pre-tax profits at the parent company of the Thérapie network of beauty clinics last dropped 95pc last year to €73,051 due to expansion costs. Accounts filed by Fellerim Ltd show that pre-tax profits decreased considerably as revenues increased 29pc to €26.24m. The company increased revenues due to new clinic openings here and in the UK last year. The business is operated by brother and sister Phillip and Katie McGlade and the directors said that since year-end, the group opened four new clinics – two here and two in the UK – and intend to open further clinics in both Ireland and UK over the coming months and years. It has also introduced its Thérapie brand to India. The Best Beauty Salon Award was won by Red Carpet Beauty at the recent Mayo Style Awards. The fifth Mayo Style Awards, organised by the Connaught Telegraph, took place on Friday, 1 November in Breaffy House Hotel & Spa Resort. Meanwhile, the Best Hair Salon Award was given to Hair and Beauty by Helen. Set up five years ago in Balla by Helen McGuinn, the salon now employs 10 stylists and therapists. Last year the business moved to new bigger premises. Entries into the Mayo Style Awards, which aim to honour local businesses in Mayo for their fashion, beauty and lifestyle, opened in September. Stylist Trinny Woodall and her team of make-up artists were in Merrion Square in Dublin for six days in November to showcase the latest innovations and creations from the Trinny London Townhouse. Open from 5-10 November, make-up artists were on hand to offer customers the Trinny London Match2Me personalised service that will tell you the exact foundation shade, eye colours, lip colours, blush, highlighter and contour that is unique to your skin, hair and eye combinations. Woodall herself made appearances throughout the week. The Trinny London brand is a make-up capsule wardrobe of cream-based products that can all be applied with fingertips to limit heavy coverage. They come in screw top pots that all snap into a stack together.

ONCOLOGY TRAINING INTERNATIONAL FEATURES AT PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY SHOW Louise O’Loughlin from Oncology Training International (OTI) gave a presentation on oncology aesthetics at the Professional Beauty Show in Dublin’s RDS in October. O’Loughlin, from Iguazu Beauty Therapy in north Co Dublin, launched OTI in Ireland earlier this year. Oncology training is imperative for all beauty and skincare professionals, she believes, as by 2020 one in two people in their lifetime will get cancer. “So it is only just that we train accordingly so that we can safely amend our treatments for those that have had cancer and that are going through cancer treatment,” she said. In the beauty room most treatments can be administered safely, however depending on the type of cancer, depending on the treatment ie chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, these treatments need to be altered ever so slightly so that they are deemed ‘safe’. Clients are at a high risk of infection, lymphedema, cellulitis and more. Due to a lowered immune system, they can contract infection easily. “Many spas and salons around the country offer services for oncology clients, which is wonderful,” said O’Loughlin. “At OTI we take that training to another level. We teach the therapist about the cancer, the individual, the side effects of cancer and it’s therapies and about the psychological effects the disease has on the patient themselves and on family and friends. After cancer treatment, many men and women want to get on with their lives putting this terrible time behind them. With our help Salon_Mag_Nov.pdf 1 08/11/2019 11:54:15 we can get them back into their normal beauty and haircare

routines. Side effects of cancer can have lifelong adverse effects, therefore somebody in remission or gone through cancer 20 years ago still needs to have their beauty and hair treatments amended. There is no one answer for all, so therefore we must learn about the individual client and their specific needs. Different organisations and centres offer wonderful treatments for people during their cancer treatment, but we want to look after them for the rest of their lives, and locally, so that they can still go to their local salon or hairdresser and have their treatments and be with the therapist that they always loved.” OTI runs foundation level training in Ireland for the hair and beauty sector professionals. It is a three-day intensive course, which covers the medical background of cancer, cancer therapies, spa management, drug therapies, pyscho-social and practical. “We cover skin cancer, amongst others, and learn when to refer clients to their physician. We have a medical professional who comes to teach the medical aspects of the course and other professionals within the industry,” added O’Loughlin.

A ROARING

SUCCESS! PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY & HJ LIVE IRELAND 2019

The largest event for beauty, hair and spa professionals, which took place at the RDS Dublin on 20-21 October, saw an array of salon owners, managers, beauty therapists, hair professionals, nail technicians and make-up artists enjoy two days of live demonstrations, education, industry leading brands and product launches. RDS Simmonscourt was filled with industry brands covering beauty, hair, advanced treatments and skincare to enable professionals to network with the right people and see everything there is to see in the world of beauty all under one roof. The live stages provided up to date practical and motivational sessions throughout the two show days. Three live education programmes covered topics across advanced treatments and skincare, business and digital skills, trend watch and treatments. Two highlights from the show were hosts Claudia McGloin for advanced treatments and skincare, and Caroline Quinlan for business and digital skills. The stages were a great opportunity for networking with industry experts, to discuss business challenges and to ask for tips and tricks to take home to your business or clinic. Meanwhile, the Irish Nail and Lash Championships returned to the RDS, this year ran by nail expert Denise Wright and Lash competition director Heather Hugues. The two days brought together both novice, expert and professional competitors, all whom were given the opportunity to showcase their skills and be recognised for their talents. The Nail Workshops were an opportunity for students and beginners to learn and expand their knowledge on tip and overlay and gel polish application in a friendly and educational environment. The HJ Live Stage returned this year and featured artists from across the country, including Sarah Mason, Rick Roberts, Paddy Corrigan and Warren Flynn. Professional Beauty wishes to thank all those who attended the show’s final year at the RDS Dublin. Next year Professional Beauty and HJ Live Ireland will return on the 8-9 November 2020 and at the City West Conference Centre Dublin. We look forward to seeing all there! CLUB CHAMPION Celebrating just over a year in business, Edit Hair Club on Cork’s McCurtain St is fast becoming a recognisable part of the city’s Victorian Quarter. “Ever since I was a small child I’ve been obsessed with hair!” says Patrick Murphy, owner of Edit Hair Club in Cork. Located on the city’s McCurtain St, which is in the heart of the Victorian Quarter, Murphy opened the professional hair salon and barbers in October 2018. Aiming to give clients a luxury experience that leaves them looking and feeling their best, the business is opened from Tuesdays to Saturdays, with late opening on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 8pm and an early start on Saturday at 8.30am.

reckon this was partly because I thought college was expected of me and partly because I was afraid everyone would know I was gay if I went hairdressing!” he says. “But eventually I guess you can’t deny your calling and once I was safely out of the closet I felt free to be me and started hairdressing at Origin Hair Design, where I trained and worked as a senior stylist for many years. I won several awards and developed the best clientele I could ever hope to have.”

“My mom always said ‘anything that had hair on it he was obsessed with!’. This included My little Pony and Barbie dolls and if I was stuck, I’d style the hair of a Troll doll! I have three sisters so I had plenty of heads to practise on. In fact, one of my first memories is from when I was about seven years old. We were all watching Blind Date and I was curly blow-drying my sister’s hair with brushes and a dryer. I have no idea how I even knew how to do that. But I knew almost instinctively I could make it curly that way! I remember it so well because I got a brush stuck in her hair and my mom had to cut the brush out. Let’s just say there were tears! But I always did my sisters’ hair and friends’ hair all through my teenage years. It was really natural to me.”

One of Murphy’s dreams was to have a salon and business of his own but, by his own admission, he was always afraid to take the plunge. In the end it was a death in the family that gave him the courage. “Opening my own salon seemed like the scariest thing I could bring on myself,” he explains. “But last year I lost my mom suddenly to cancer. My family’s whole world fell apart. I felt sickened that I didn’t open my salon when she could have seen it. She always said ‘it would be the making of you!’. So I guess losing my mom put everything in perspective. Every kid’s worst nightmare is something bad happening to their mom. You worry about this your whole life. And then your irrational worry becomes a terrifying reality and opening a salon suddenly doesn’t seem very scary anymore. And a few months later, with the help of my dad and many others, Edit Hair Club was born.

By the time Murphy was in secondary school, doing his Leaving Cert and choosing a career, he opted to go to college and studied environmental science in UCC for four years. “I

All inclusive Murphy says that starting out he wanted a cool, spacious, urban style that was simple, but still had a relaxed, homely feeling. “I

called it a club because I wanted it to be inclusive for both staff and clients to feel at home in there – that it would have a sense of family. I wanted absolutely nothing but high-end hair and high-end service but I wanted everyone to feel comfortable and at ease too. You know, when you have that many ideas in your head I always think it will never turn out how you think it will. But, on this one occasion in my life, I can honestly say that Edit Hair Club is everything I imagined it to be and more. “I couldn’t have imagined how lucky I would be with staff. Every single member of the team brings 100pc every day. Each one is so talented and I find myself learning from all of them. I feel very blessed and I know I have my mom to thank because I know she’s still minding me.” So what’s next for Murphy and his business? “When I look to the future of Edit Hair Club, I get a buzz in my stomach” he says. “It’s kind of nerves and kind of excitement. I plan to keep creating great hair and a great personalised service, and maintaining and extending a valued client base. Our clients are the reason the salon actually happens and I’m so grateful to each one of them for their loyalty and support. I want my salon to be a cornerstone in the heart of Cork’s vibrant Victorian Quarter. I still have to pinch myself every morning when I’m opening the shutters, it’s like I can’t believe it! And I am very grateful to every single person who made it possible.”

IRISH SPA ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES

INAUGURAL BUSINESS FORUM The Irish Spa Association recently launched its inaugural business forum with a full house of Ireland’s leading spa operators and industry stakeholders at the historic spa hotel Cliff At Lyons. Taking place on 22 October, the event saw Ireland’s beauty, spa and wellness sector gathered in one room under the newly established Irish Spa Association. The not-for-profit association was launched in June of this year and the recent forum hosted Ireland’s most distinguished industry directors, managers and spa operators. Guests travelled from Ireland’s leading spa destinations and as far afield as Hawaii for the gathering. They ranged from Galgorm Resort in Northern Ireland to Ashford Castle, Adare Manor, The K Club and The Merrion.

“The wellness economy is a $4.2trn global industry. Spa and wellness has become a major force in Ireland and around the world, yet growth has been largely a private sector phenomenon and off the radar of most government leaders, public representatives and economic developers,’’ said the Irish Spa Association’s co-founder Peigin Crowley. “The Irish Spa Association will endeavor to advance the spa industry to sustain health and well-being by promoting the value of the spa experience, providing invaluable educational resources, providing networking opportunities, and speaking as the authoritative voice to

foster professionalism and growth. Thought-provoking discussion among industry leaders provided an exciting platform to guide the future of the industry in Ireland.” The association has had very successful engagement with Irish Government representatives and went on to have a November meeting with the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys. MEDICALIA NOW AVAILABLE IN IRELAND AND UK THROUGH PEVONIA Medicalia is now available in Ireland and the UK following a new distribution agreement that sits alongside the Pevonia spa brand. Although the two brands are complementary, they have a different audience, with Medicalia focusing on doctor-led practices where clients are looking for advanced aesthetic results. Pevonia is available through spas and salons. Due to the high percentage of active ingredients, neither the Medicalia nor Pevonia ranges are available on the High St. The desire to prevent and reverse the signs of ageing, along with both a rising demand for dermatological procedures and natural skincare, led to the creation of Medicalia, which is a doctor-led, skincare from the US, crafted to offer doctors and medi-spas an innovative selection of clinical strength

treatments and products with advanced technologies. Created over 15 years ago by the founder of Pevonia, Medicalia was driven by aesthetic inspiration and insight. It offers a comprehensive pre and postoperative skin care system alongside innovative peels featuring the most potent natural ingredients in results-driven concentrations. Every Medicalia product is dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and non-irritant. All products designed for the eye area are also ophthalmologist tested. Products feature biomimetic technology; proven to improve, restore, repair and boost the skin’s recovery process for optimum skin health. All products are free from parabens, GMSs, gluten, sodium lauryl sulfate, formaldehyde, alcohol, lanolin, mineral oil, PABA, urea, artificial colours and fragrances.

The new 10 treatment room spa – which also houses a yoga studio, skin clinic, relaxation areas and events suite – has been chosen by Cardiff-based aesthetics company Advanced Esthetics Solutions to be the first clinic in Northern Ireland to offer its Divine Pro facial rejuvenation technology, which has a pyramid facelift among its treatments. “It’s an exciting time for Zen as we embark on a new era, after buying new premises adjacent to where we have operated from since 2016 and carrying out a building project which has trebled our size and dramatically increased capacity for clients,” said McCrink. “Health and wellness is a fast-moving industry and we work hard to keep up with customer demand for results-driven new treatments. We want to be a leader in spa industry, so it’s fantastic to be chosen to be the first salon in Northern Ireland to offer the Divine Pro facial rejuvenation technology.”

CLAIMING YOUR GOOGLE

MY BUSINESS PAGE

Did you know that Google provides a free tool that can help you drive visitors to your website, control local information about your company and connect with your potential customers? It’s time to claim your Google My Business profile, writes Clive Hooper. Over 60pc of consumers use their mobile devices to look for a nearby service and more than 80pc of searches are done on the Google search engine. Google provides a free tool that can help you drive visitors to your website, control the local information about your company, connect with your potential customers and manage your reputation. But half of small enterprises haven’t yet applied for their Google My Business (GMB) profiles. So what exactly is it? GMB enables you to enter details regarding your business, including contact information, URL, location and photos. It makes it easy to create and update your business profile so you can stand out, and bring customers in. You are taking charge of what people see when they do a local search for your business. You can also draw in new customers with photos of your products or favorite menu items – pictures show what’s unique about your business, and you can add as many as you like. The clients can leave reviews regarding your business, and claiming your Google My Business profile will help you address any matters. Reviews are now a two-way conversation between you and your customers, so you can be the first to know when you get a new review and you can respond right away. The most recent feature to be added is the capability to create content for Google My Business page, to mention essential updates and details regarding your company. If you need to adjust your hours for the holidays or add a new phone number, for instance, you can make changes in a few easy steps. For local companies, you are able to optimise to get displayed inside the ‘Local 3-Pack’. These are the first three results that

are displayed from search results. The outcomes will rely on the geographic location, however the proper optimisation of your GMB page may also lead to the rankings of your own business in local internet search results. Important things about GMB page Many shoppers today use Google My Business page to understand more about the business. Actually, many people don’t go beyond the GMB results when searching for service or compny, especially locally. If you don’t use a well optimised page you may be passing up on lots of potential clients.Furthermore, many people use GMB to check out the company prior to making their choice: the GMB features one to five-star ratings and reviews, which means that the absence of these details might harm your reputation as a well-known business. With information ready at your fingertips, controlling and checking the feedback of the customers is important for virtually every business. GMB page allows you to keep in touch, get feedback and address any adverse feedback your clients could have. Finally, remember that marketing today is all about being supportive and genuine. It is original, unique and interesting content that grabs the user’s attention and keeps it for a longer time. After that it becomes the voice of your brand, thus creating loyal fans and followers. NIMUE SKIN TECHNOLOGY: YOUR ROUTE TO AESTHETICS

Nimue Skin Technology bridges the gap between the traditional salon facial and strictly surgical procedures quite seamlessly with a range of professional-only treatments and peels that offer lasting skin rejuvenation and instant results. A quick glance at any social media platform shows clear evidence that aesthetic treatments are in demand. As this growth in popularity soars and consumers demand results without downtime, one of the big challenges facing salons is how to adapt your offering to give consumers real results without surgery, botox or fillers. Enter innovative derma-cosmeceutical range Nimue Skin Technology. Launched in 1994 by a cosmetic surgeon looking for products to heal skin and facilitate dermal change pre and post-surgery, it’s fair to say the brand knows a thing or two about aesthetics. However, rather than go down the route of expensive machinery, Nimue prefers to let the science do the hard work and instead combines high-quality, concentrated actives with biotechnological ingredients. Delivery systems are at the heart of Nimue product development and there are 11 unique systems that provide superior product penetration from their salon-only treatments and homecare. Each treatment focuses on maximum stimulation with minimum irritation and while their deepest skin peel, the new and innovative Smart Resurfacer Peel, does require customers to have been using AHAs on their skin for some time, there are plenty of options for clients that are new to

28

the brand. The current celebrity favourite microneedling or Nimue’s unique Thermal Detox Peel both work brilliantly for clients who are not yet using the brand’s formulas. Another point to note about Nimue is that the brand is strictly professional only, meaning it is not available anywhere online so there is lots of opportunity for salons to maximise their profits through retail sales. Nimue also cares about the planet and helps salons tackle their carbon footprint and become more sustainable, which will strike a chord with many consumers. It is one of the only professional salon ranges to offer refillable products, which creates a saving of up to 30pc on product purchases. As well as this innovative packaging, salons can benefit from minimising wastage with resealable pods that contain the peel treatments. The brand even provides fully biodegradable bags for retail sales. The Treatments Thermal Detox Peel – A 30-minute treatment that uses charcoal and boasts a warming, bubbling effect. Suitable for anybody, it has a detoxifying and exfoliating effect on the skin, brightening even the dullest complexion and tightening up those pores.

Microneedling Roller with Nimue-TDS 2

Microneedling – Not one for the needle shy but Nimue’s roller does have an ergonomic handle that allows therapists more control over pressure and makes treatments more comfortable for clients too. Results are instant and can be bespoke by using the brands Superfluids, masks and TDS™ Serums. 35% Glycolic Treatment – Your customers will need to be using Nimue skincare at home to introduce their skin to AHAs before they can have this peel, but the benefits are huge. Not only will it improve skin texture, it’s a fabulous anti-ageing treatment that can plump wrinkles and give an instant boost to radiance. Nimue SRC – This advanced skin resurfacing treatment removes dead cells form the stratum corneum whilst keeping the barrier and living cells in tact. Rather than focus on one acid, this treatment allows you to tailor the peel to the client’s skin type and uses a blend of acids to deliver optimum performance. It is perfect to treating a wide range of concerns from rejuvenation to addressing hyperpigmentation and problematic skin. Smart Resurfacer – This peel has the benefits of a medium depth peel with minimal side effects or downtime. It does not cause redness, inflammation or risk skin damage – sounds too good to be true right? Unlike other peels, Smart Resurfacer suspends it’s active ingredients in an oil-base, meaning tingling

and discomfort are minimised and although the peel is potent it is instantly neutralised with water. Nimue brand ambassador and salon owner, Farrah Fawcett loves the choice Nimue offers her clients. “I like to plan a course of treatments for my customers once I understand their skin concerns and I have prescribed the right homecare for them. I know I can plot out a programme of treatments to complement the homecare regime and deliver visible lasting results. A client might start with a Thermal Detox Peel then once they have got used to the homecare, I can start to introduce deeper peels like the 35% Glycolic.” New treatment spotlight – microneedling OK, so microneedling is not new so to speak but Nimue hasn’t just jumped on the band wagon, they have taken the time to ensure their treatment offering has plenty of USPs and a brand new update to technique that can really benefit salons. For optimum results a course of six treatments is recommended and each client gets their very own personal roller that provides exactly six treatments and can be sterilised and stored in its own personalised box between appointments. Salon and Spa Magazine Ireland’s Linda Horan got to experience the treatment during the brand’s recent event in Dublin. “I’m a big fan of Nimue homecare having completed the 12-Week Challenge in the past. I was particularly excited to try microneedling as it helps maximise the effectiveness of the products. My skin looked instantly rejuvenated following this treatment and there was no downtime at all, which makes it a winner for anybody seeking fast results.”

THE BLINK OF AN EYE…

LASHUS MAPPING

A

s we enter the festive season it is certain that one of the top treatments expected to get salons all a flutter and cash registers a ringing is lash extensions. Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine caught up with one of the industry’s true innovators LASHUS to find out all about the new LASHUS Extensions range. We chatted to LASHUS brand manager Victoria Sargeson for the scoop on the new products and to find out how salons can maximise their profits at this time of year. Q: It’s been nine months since LASHUS THE LIFT launched. How’s it going? A: The response has been phenomenal. We are so thrilled to have brought this brand to Ireland as there is a huge demand for lash treatments and for first-class products and services like ours. The before and after shots we’ve seen are outstanding and even celebrities such as Love Island’s Molly-Mae Hague have become fans of the brand. Q: The industry seems to be thriving, but not without its challenges. What are the big issues out there? A: Over-processing and poor education are two of the big concerns. LASHUS THE LIFT has a stripped back formula that is unique to us and we are very proud of it as there are no nasties and no risks of over-processing. We also provide a lash tint as part of our lift treatment so it’s a more premium service that feels luxurious for the customer and enhances the result. This in turn helps salons to retain their customers.

30

Q: You mention education. Do you feel this is just as important as product? A: You can have the best products in the world but without education and training you cannot guarantee results. Our educators are highly skilled and empower all of our students and customers with everything they need to make their business a success. We also have around the clock support with our training centres and our dedicated pro support groups on social media. Q: Why are you launching extensions now? A: Well it’s really a natural progression for the brand and

we want to ensure that our customers are able to offer the full spectrum of lash treatments from lift and tint to classic extensions and full volume. Q: What’s unique about LASHUS Extensions? A: There are three things a lash technician can expect from LASHUS. Firstly, our adhesive is the best on the market and is both oil and water-resistant meaning maximum retention. Secondly our lashes are made from a stunning, stable synthetic fibre that has been triple treated to ensure the beautiful curl is retained in every single lash. Thirdly we have fabulous pre-made fans that are heat-bonded at the base as opposed to being glued and this means that they are lighter on the natural lash and cleverly wrap around the lash supporting it and creating a fuller look. Q: Is the brand suitable for beginners? A: Absolutely. In fact one of our other USPs is that we are the first lash company to offer a beginner’s course that allows new lash technicians to achieve a volume look straight away. This utilises the lovely heat-bonded pre-made fans I just mentioned. At Sweet Squared education is the key to success so our one-day Lash Grad training course is very practical and hands-on. It’s suitable for conversion or for complete beginners and every student will leave equipped to complete their four case studies and become a LASHUS Lash Grad. Q: What are the benefits for a salon that wants to add extensions to their treatment menu? A: Profit! Lots of it! Lash extensions is one of the most profitable treatments a salon can offer, and the treatment is in high demand so if a salon isn’t offering it then they are definitely missing out on business. After your product costs you can expect to see a 95pc profit margin on lash extension treatments and we’re seeing more salons boosting their business by combining nail and lash maintenance appointments. Q: How can a salon become known for their lash services? A: Offer a premium service and ensure you have the best training and tools for the job! Put Lash health first! This is extremely important. We start with natural lash analysis to ensure the correct diameter of lash extension is selected and that extensions can be worn safely by your client. In our

LASHUS THE LIFT

LASHUS THE LIFT courses we also teach lash mapping, which is an amazing technique but some experienced technicians still do not use it. Basically, it gives the technician a precise method of guidance to ensure even lengths and coverage and to provide symmetry across both eyes. Naturally, eyelashes are not all one length across the eye so by using lash mapping you can learn to plot out the lengths of lash extensions needed across the eye to ensure a more natural curvature to the finished lash set. Using a variety of lash lengths creates a natural flow and makes the finished set look flawless. Also, you must always take a before and after photo for your client and encourage them to share it on social media. They will be so thrilled with the results more often then not they will be keen to share their new look, and you will soon have customers flocking to your doors. www.sweetsquared.ie 01 408 91 91

Business and finance

FINANCIAL FACTORS Regardless of the size of your hair, beauty or spa business, it is vulnerable to the ongoing uncertainty associated with Brexit and any risks to the Irish economy. Budget 2020, which was unveiled by the Government in October, put a focus on protecting Irish SMEs while putting a major emphasis on the impact of Brexit. The Government laid out its financial plans for responding to Brexit with a total package of €1.2bn, with €650m of this to support agriculture, enterprise and tourism sectors, and to help stabilise the worst affected regions. With Brexit continuing to be a never ending saga, it’s estimated that Ireland’s GDP would shrink by 0.6pc in the event of a no-deal. Regardless of the outcome, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe, when announcing the Budget in October said the Government must increase the level and range of supports to ensure that the Irish economy is protected. Earlier this year, CSO figures showed that Ireland still has one of the highest

per capita debt levels in the world. This equates to €44,365 for every man, woman and child in the State or nearly €90,000 for every worker in the economy. And while this represents a slight reduction from the peak of €47,514 in the first quarter of 2013, it is still more than four times higher than the pre-crisis level of €10,667 recorded in first quarter of 2007. The Government has been repeatedly warned that having such a large debt pile leaves the economy more at risk to shocks such as Brexit. Enterprise is considered to be among Ireland’s most vulnerable sectors, and if the country is faced with a no-deal situation, €220m of the €650m will be deployed immediately. It will be divided into two streams, one being an enterprise stream to fund ‘limited, targeted interventions for vulnerable but viable enterprises’. Minister Donohue has insisted the Government is ready for Brexit, “whatever form it takes”. Support for hairdressers Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation Heather Humphreys announced that €110m out of the €650m will be allocated to her department to tackle a no-deal Brexit. “I’m providing Microfinance Ireland with an additional €5m to support our small businesses, from hauliers to hairdressers,” she said. Microfinance Ireland provides loans of up to €25,000 to small businesses and start-ups based in Ireland. It is supported by the Irish Government and the EU. It provides the loans through the Government’s Microenterprise Loan Fund. The purpose of the fund is to help start-ups and established businesses to start up a small business or expand their existing business. A microenterprise is classified simply as a small business (including a self-employed person) with

fewer than 10 employees and an annual turnover of less than €2m. Microfinance Ireland helps these businesses by providing unsecured business loans of €2,000 to €25,000 for commercially viable proposals. Sole traders, partnerships and limited companies are all eligible to apply. It works closely with all its partners, including Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs), the Irish Local Development Network (Local Development Companies and Area Partnerships – LDCs for short), as well as all the major banks to provide viable businesses with the support they need to get started or to grow their business and create jobs. The LEOs and LDCs can help the applicant to prepare the documents to apply for a loan from Microfinance. The €110m for enterprises has been identified for the first wave of funding for targeted new interventions to help vulnerable firms adjust. These interventions will support firms of all sizes at all levels of difficulty. Besides the extra €5m for Microfinance Ireland, other supports include a €45m Transition Fund; €5m for a Local Enterprise Offices Emergency Brexit Fund; and €3m extra for regulatory bodies. Black market threat Meanwhile, the Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation (HABIC), a newly launched organisation representing professionals in the hair and beauty industry, said recently that the black economy here is threatening the legitimate industry, with thousands of people providing services in their homes. It claims that this market is causing a severe skills crisis for businesses and damaging standards across the industry, and that it is now as big as the legitimate market and is undermining businesses and dumbing down the industry. “In Ireland we estimate the hair and beauty business is worth about €2bn, but there is also a sizeable black market,” CEO of HABIC Margaret O’Reilly Daugherty told RTE’s This Week. Salon owners maintain that many staff have left full-time jobs to work from home as it is more attractive for them to do that because they don’t have to pay taxes. Revenue don’t have the resources to track down people hairdressing at home and the longer this goes under the radar, the more people will do it.

MANAGING STRESS AND ANXIETY WITHIN THE TEAM Burnout was recently classified by the World Health Organisation as a medical condition, which is why you need to be aware of the signs of stress and anxiety to help prevent staff burnout, advises beauty business expert Liz McKeon.

A

nxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. Stress is the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work. Stress is not an illness – it is a state. However, if stress becomes excessive and prolonged, mental and physical illness may develop.Simply put, when well-being is eroded people can get sick both mentally and physically. There is a fine line between healthy motivation and unhealthy stress. Causes of stress in the workplace are varied and include: a high workload, coping with change, conflict, bullying, ineffective management, long working hours, lack of training, threat of job loss and unclear job specification. To prevent any or all of the above and develop well-being salon policies consider these tips.

overtime payments for additional work allows staff to be suitably rewarded for their efforts, which improves self-esteem and feelings of personal value and encourages commitment and job loyalty. Create a healthy salon Create a dedicated space for staff to rest and relax during their breaks. This is vitally important to give people time to escape the fast pace of the salon. Subscribe the team to a mindfulness app – to ensure they have some downtime to relax. This has proven benefits for reducing stress and anxiety.

Create a positive work culture Have a clear vision and purpose, where staff know they are valued, enabling them to be engaged with the success of the salon. Encourage teamwork through relevant training rewards and recognition. Pay and working conditions should reflect the responsibilities of the role, while job security and the feeling that the job itself may be at risk is a significant source of stress and tends to impact the way beyond the job performance. Good communication encourages a positive salon culture, which helps to promote well-being. Aim for excellent communications between all levels management and staff. Create a salon culture that respects and encourages healthy work/life balance. For example, offering time in lieu or

IN SICKNESS AND ILL-HEALTH Dealing with sickness absence is tricky, but employers can take several positive steps, writes The HR Company’s Linda Ward. Employee sickness absence can have a significant impact on businesses – affecting performance, productivity, workload and morale. Managing sickness absence also requires a high degree of sensitivity and flexibility, making it one of the trickiest issues for employers to handle. Managing employees affected by ill-health Not all sickness absence can be treated in the same way. Determining the best course of action will depend on whether the absence is long-term or short-term, as well as the nature of the illness and the role of the individual concerned. Keeping accurate absence records can assist an employer in identifying issues early on. It is also helpful to maintain clear sickness absence policies to ensure that employees are aware of expected standards of attendance and that managers can deal with absences effectively. Where absence is long-term, it is advisable to keep in regular contact with the employee (unless medical advice indicates otherwise). GP ‘fit notes’ tend to provide limited information about an employee’s condition, but occupational health specialists can provide advice for employers who wish to understand an employee’s medical issues and the impact on their role. To get the most value out of such providers, employers should ask specific questions tailored to the individual employee. In some cases, it may be appropriate to consider a phased return to work. For this to be most effective, it is important to agree the terms of the return with the individual with the support of occupational health, and to ensure relevant colleagues are given the support to deal with any impact this may have on them.

When absence becomes unmanageable If absence issues cannot be resolved through informal methods, the employer may have no choice but to follow a formal capability process. Actions such as a formal warning or dismissal should only be implemented following a proper procedure in line with the WRC Code of Practice – this will also reduce the risk of claims such as unfair dismissal or breach of contract. Employers should also consider whether changes are needed to the process; for example, it may be appropriate to hold meetings at a neutral venue or even at the employee’s home. Making reasonable adjustments Crucially, employers should always consider whether the employee’s absence is due to an underlying medical condition that could amount to a disability under the Equality Act. If the employee is disabled, the employer has a duty to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for the employee’s disability. In practice, this could include a wide range of changes, from installing standing desks for employees with back issues to agreeing to flexible working arrangements to assist with mental health issues. Again, occupational health can help identify what adjustments may be appropriate. It is, however, worth noting that adjustments are intended to help a disabled employee stay in work, meaning that generally it is not a reasonable adjustment to offer additional sick pay. Making reasonable adjustments is good practice, as well as being key in avoiding disability discrimination claims. Compensation for disability discrimination is uncapped and as disabled employees can find it difficult to secure alternative employment, successful claims can lead to very high awards of compensation. OUR INDUSTRY SHONE AT SHINE

The recent 2019 SHINE event was a huge success and anyone who missed it should definitely make a point to visit in 2020, writes Joe McGlinchey, The Sunbed Association’s representative for Ireland.

T

here was a fantastic line-up of speakers with some great advice and information for businesses together with an in-depth look at what’s going on in our industry in Ireland, the rest of Europe and around the world. And the good news is that for professional salon operators, the future is looking very bright indeed! With the blinkered anti-sunbed lobby challenging sunbed use, there were a couple of excellent presentations providing in-depth information and statistics that unreservedly put into perspective the fact that professional sunbed operators are part of the solution, not the problem. The amount of work that is going on behind the scenes around the world, and with The Sunbed Association

involved in much of this, bodes extremely well for the future and as a member of The Sunbed Association you can keep up to speed with all of this and much more.

experience. Responsible tanning is the way forward, always remembering we are the tanning industry, not the burning industry.

Another key industry message was 0.3 tanning and the need for all professional operators to comply with this EU standard. Managers and owners of salons presented their experiences of 0.3 tanning and gave real experiences of how their customers and the bottom line of their businesses benefited from being 0.3 compliant. This 0.3 tanning dramatically reduces the risk of burning on a sunbed and, as we all know, it is burning that must always be avoided. It’s also a gentler way to tan with fantastic results for your customers who can really enjoy their indoor sunshine

ACCIDENTS HAPPEN Brian Mullins Insurance Brokers gives some easy to follow pointers on what steps to take if things go wrong in your salon.

It’s not realistic in business to assume that there will never be problems. So what to do when things go wrong? Here is some advice in seven steps: 1. Reassure the client and ask them to call in to meet with you. This will enable you to assess the extent of any damage and confirm that an injury/discomfort to the client has occurred. 2. Do not admit liability until such time as you have had an opportunity to investigate the claims and also notify your insurers. 3. Get the therapist concerned to provide a signed statement in writing outlining the full sequence of events from the time of treatment to the notification that a claim may be forthcoming. 4. Ensure that your client record card is up to date and accurate. 5.Notify your insurers providing the following information.

36

i) Date and time of the treatment ii) Details of your client iii) Details of the therapist iv) Details of the treatment being provided v) A copy of your client’s record card vi) Forward any correspondence received to your insurers 6. Update your insurers with any further developments. 7. Review your in-house procedures to see if there is anyway that you can avoid a similar incident from reoccurring. Remember that the majority of all claims can either be reduced or avoided if handled in a professional manner. BEAUTY IS IN THE

EYES

OF THE BEHOLDER Between brows and lashes, eyes have never been such big business. As many of you well know, your entire offering may revolve around just one of them – both have never been as important a feature on the face. In fact, a study carried out earlier this year found that 56pc of Irish women wouldn’t leave the house without their brows done. In recent years, eyebrows have taken over the beauty world, with big, full brows becoming a serious trend, and the thin line look becoming well forgotten. The same survey also found that 71pc of Irish women believed they hadn’t found the perfect brow product. As we inch towards the end of 2019, it’s hard to imagine that a few years ago such eye beauty products didn’t feature in the average person’s daily make-up routine, but now they’re are a multi-billion euro industry. Slowly but surely over the last few years, the industry has become obsessed with brows, along with long, luscious lashes – from extensions to special serums, there’s no end of ways to keep them fluttering! So we bring you the cream of the crop in this eye-popping sector, which shows no sign of slowing down.

Brow artist focus

GOLDEN GIRL Lizanne Proctor Lizanne Proctor is a Dublin-based professional make-up artist, who specialises in Phibrows, a manual, semi-permanent technique of hyper-realistic eyebrow drawing in which the shape of eyebrows is calculated according to facial morphology and golden proportion. It uses the PhiBrows golden ratio divider (compass), for precise eyebrow an entire face measurement. Can you tell us a bit about your own background and particular speciality in Phibrows?

Why would you chose this method for yourself and for clients, what are advantages?

When I finished school I did animation. I loved drawing and, in particular, shading and small details. The course ended up being more computer-based so I finished the year out and went travelling. I then become fascinated by film make-up. I did a course in media make-up and then started working in film and TV. While working in the industry I would constantly be challenged with either filling in brows very naturally for more period style TV or covering brows for prosthetic applications. I also came across some bad eyebrow tattoos and microbladed brows and would have to try and fix them or cover them with speciality make-up. When I had my two little boys I just couldn’t do film any more with the crazy hours and instability. So I thought about what I could do in the industry that would still be creative and that would allow me to work my own hours from home. Phibrows ticked all the boxes for me.

Firstly you know that a Phibrows artist has gone through strict and thorough training using the highest quality products and tools. The founder of Phibrows invented the compass that is used to distinguish where your brows are supposed to start, arch and end. We can achieve perfect symmetry based on your natural features. People with thin, sparse or barely there brows may have lost their confidence and feel fed up tinting and filling them out every day. Phibrows give these people back their confidence and it is so rewarding for me seeing their faces light up when they see their new brows for the first time. This is also why I am a part of the Phi ‘Pay with a smile’ programme. I do complimentary Phibrows to anybody who has lost their brows due to chemotherapy or alopecia.

How did you get involved? My sister-in-law runs a successful beauty salon that specialises mainly in brows and I was just fascinated by the work she did. She is an incredible Phibrows artist and watching her just made me want to learn the skill. It was exactly what I wanted, something creative and highly skilled in the beauty industry and I could work from home and do my own hours.

How do you think the brow industry is developing in Ireland at the moment? The brow industry is massive in Ireland. People will spend hundreds on their brows and lashes. I think people feel like once their brows and lashes are done they don’t need a lot of make-up. I think the industry will continue to grow. There is already new and innovative brow treatments on the market, such as nano brows, breezy brows, innate brows and brow lamination to name but a few. I think natural fuller brows are here to stay!

What is different about Phibrows? To become a Phibrows artist you go through rigorous training, mastering 11 levels in less than six months under the watchful eye of your highly skilled masters. It’s so important to be properly trained in such a highly skilled procedure that can potentially be on someone’s face for a couple of years! Microblading is becoming more and more popular so it is important to choose an artist that is well educated on technique, products, tools and safety. Another reason why I chose the brand is because they produce the highest quality pigments. They do not change colour, cause any reactions within Follow me on instagram @lp_makeupartist or email the skin or migrate. These products are also vegan and lizanneproctoctor@hotmail.com. cruelty-free. Read Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine online at www.salonmagazine.ie

HIGH BROW BENEFITS

UP TO HER EYES – AND LOVING IT!

Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine spoke to Nicola Walsh, proprietor of the Blush House of Beauty salons in Clonmel and Dungarvan, who introduced the Brow Tycoon lamination service to her salons. Tell us a bit about your own background, when did you launch the business and how has it expanded? I established Blush House of Beauty in Clonmel, Co Tipperary in 2014. Blush is in its fifth year of trading and in this time has gone from one nail station in a local shopping centre to two full salons across two counties. How popular are brow treatments in your salon and have you seen an increase in clients/revenue since introducing these new services? Brow treatments contribute to be a large part of the Blush service menu. There has been a steady increase in brow services over the last five years as the trends in brow services continue to evolve. Since working with Brow Tycoon and offering the brow lamination service through them, we have noticed a marked increase in not only younger but also our more mature clients, which we are delighted to see. What interested you in Brow Tycoon, how long have you used the brand, and why did you choose it over others on the market? Brow Tycoon is a stand-out brand. Blush House of Beauty prides itself in dealing with and providing professional high-end brands only. Not only is the product superior, but the service and professionalism of the Brow Tycoon brand also lends to the choice in supplier. How do you think the brow industry is developing in Ireland at the moment? In a recent study in Ireland by a leading brand, it was shown that 56pc of women in Ireland will not leave the house without their brows being done! I would say that says a lot. As products and brands develop, more services become available with better solutions to varying problems and so the customer base increases. What trends are going to be big next year? The big trends for next year will be soft definition and 3D texture. We have had the strong, heavy and defined look around for the last few years but I think this will change to a softer look with more ‘skin’ showing through. 2020 also leans towards the ‘dewy’ brow look – the use of waxes and gels will help achieve this look. Lastly, the windswept look will also be popular. The brow lamination treatment from Brow Tycoon will service these softer fluffier trends perfectly. Would you recommend Brow Tycoon products and training? Absolutely! Joe and Gerry are good at what they do and so supportive to their customers. Our girls loved their training day with the Brow Tycoon trainers and their level of skill on arriving back to the salon was brilliant. They really did hit the ground running! What would you say to other people looking to start a career as a brow artist? At the outset, research is key. Suppliers, products, insurance companies, pricing etc. are all integral to how a brow artist moves forward. Training is also is the key to success! You can never train too much. Learn from those around you and understand fully what you want to achieve with your clients. Choose your brands and suppliers carefully. It is important to have suppliers who can be contacted, who have support groups and who offer a high-quality product. For more information on prices and training dates call Bronze Direct on tel: +353 (0) 16363138.

“I believe beauty should not be fashionable but instead should be subtle and natural,” says Elaine. “I am not a big make-up wearer at all. Strong big brows, big lipsticks, lots of eyeshadow and heaps of mascara never did it for me, even when I was much younger. I prefer a more discreet look.” Up To My Eyes offers a wide variety of brow, lash and lip treatments, all of them 100pc natural looking. “We are after the ‘you look great’ comment for our clients, rather than ‘your lashes/ brows/lips look great’. When these facial features are enhanced correctly, the client’s whole face should look brighter and younger, not the facial feature itself. In truth I have been wearing eyelash extensions for over 10 years, have my lips tattooed and my brows emBrowdered, but I still don’t know how to use blusher or eyeshadow correctly. I don’t like to look like I’ve gone to any effort and on a day-to-day basis I don’t need to now. My lips look younger, not brighter or bigger, my eyelashes are full as opposed to long and are great for hiding my age-related baggy eyelids, and my brows look like nothing has been done to them, whereas in truth, I lost the tails years ago.” During her property days, Elaine initially fell in love with eyelash extensions and in 2009 while on a holiday in Sydney she took some days off the beach to train in how to apply them. One year later Up To My Eyes Salon was born. It was an instant success and couldn’t have been more aptly named. “It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey, all of us in the salon laugh at the irony in the name.” In 2010, after intense training in Singapore, she was the first person to introduce microblading into the Irish beauty market. From there, herself and her team went on to create their own, gentler technique of micro-stippling. “Microblading is great for thick and young skin, but if there are skin complications or if the client is more mature, there is a greater risk to tear and scar the skin. We pluck tiny dots into the skin in the formation of brow hair as opposed to cutting down into the skin and carving in strokes. emBrowdery is a method of creating semi-permanent brows and gives the client more control over the outcome of the brow shape. It’s an incredibly popular procedure and we’ve treated over 10,000 clients to date.” Elaine and her team have won numerous awards because of their skills, great attention to detail and their legendary customer care. Up To My Eyes has been offering courses in brows and lashes for the last 10 years. Elaine is proud to say that virtually all of her students have gone on to make great names for themselves. Students learn how to make their clients look ‘discreetly’ better and this is what the vast majority of clients want, she adds. PALETTE PERFECT Michelle Fox is an Irish make-up artist (MUA) who has collaborated with Fuschia Make-up to launch the Michelle Fox Palette, a highly pigmented shadow, blush, contour and highlight collection. According to Fushcia, the reviews have been incredible and the palette has exceeded all of its expectations . Can you tell us a bit about your own background, when your make-up obsession started, how long have you been a MUA and where did you study your art ? I started my make-up career about 10 years ago. I always loved make-up and knew it would be the field I’d end up working in. I’m so lucky to work at something I love every day, it doesn’t feel like work at all! I studied at LA Make-Up Academy in Dublin and then began counter work straight after with Lancome and I even had a short stint with Fuschia!

continues to grow. Its great because now you don’t have to go into a big name department store anymore to find the top brands, they’re all available in your local pharmacy. In terms of make-up looks, I think people are paring it back, they realise less is more. The day of heavy contour has gone, thank God!

The MUA Mia Connor – she is amazingly talented and her looks are stunning. She uses make-up to enhance your natural beauty rather than covering you up and always seems to add the perfect pop of colour each. How do you think the make-up industry is developing in Ireland at the moment? It’s amazing, the talent out there now is incredible. Make-up is huge and

make-up

Why do you choose this brand over others on the market? It was one of the first make-up brands I ever worked for and my love for Fuschia has always remained. The products are amazing and I really love the people there, it’s an Irish brand run by women and Gill and the team have always supported others like myself in the industry so I feel like it was a very natural fit. What trends are going to be big next year? The glowy/natural look is here to stay and I think it’s only going to be bigger over the coming year. Irish women are more in tune with make-up now, they want to show off their natural beauty and aren’t so quick to cover up with heavy foundation and eye make-up. The looks are much more fresh and dewy. And fluffy brows are a must too!

How long have you used the Fuschia Make-up brand?

What would you say to other people looking to start a career as a MUA?

For as long as I can remember! I fell in love with their mineral make up over 10 years ago and it’s always my go-to foundation.

Intern with a really good brand. Build your skincare knowledge, this is a big thing for me as make-up always starts with the skin.

VIVA LAS

VEGAN

You’d have to be hiding under a rock to not have noticed the rise of veganism in the past while, and the movement has firmly established itself in the hair and beauty industry. In the first of a series of reports Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine sheds some light on the subject. Once considered to be a niche concept for fanatical types, veganism has steadily crept into mainstream society to such an extent that nearly everything these days has a vegan option. Indeed Collins Dictionary recognised ‘vegan’ as one of the top 10 most popular words of 2018. Just in November, World Vegan Day was marked around the globe, while the beginning of 2020 will see consumers doing ‘Veganuary’ as part of their New Year detoxes and resolutions. More and more, veganism in all forms in seen as a healthier lifestyle choice. As consumers become more concerned about sustainable living, they are increasingly conscious of the ingredients and production methods behind their favourite products. And this is especially true for the hair and beauty industry, which has felt the effects of the movement over the last few years as more environmentally-conscious consumers seek out sustainable choices and cruelty-free products. Going vegan is no longer confined to what’s in your fridge or kitchen cabinets, but what’s in the bathroom and your make-up bag too. According to a report by Grand View Research, the global market for vegan cosmetics is expected to reach $20.8 billion by 2025. Consumers want to avoid brands that contain animal by-products such as honey, gelatin, beeswax and carmine, so much so that Google searches for ‘vegan beauty’ have reportedly doubled every year since 2012. So what exactly does vegan-friendly mean? It’s something that is free of all animal products and animal by-products such as beeswax, milk substance, egg whites and honey. Meanwhile, cruelty-free means that neither the products nor their ingredients have been tested on animals at any point in the development process. Something that is vegan is not necessarily cruelty-free, although many products are both.

Market drivers

What’s driving the growth of this market, you may ask. Well, with millennials accounting for two-thirds of global buying power, and their perceptions and beliefs driving a lot of their decision-making when it comes to choosing what products they buy, their choices reflect their concerns over animal cruelty, carbon emissions and the strain on the planet’s depleting natural resources. To sum it up, it’s ethical consumerism that is driving the demand for vegan options. Along with millenials, the majority of other consumers are

increasingly taking into consideration animal rights and the safety of ingredients before making a purchase. They are rejecting products with unrecognisable chemicals and toxins and instead opting for natural-based products. As far as today’s eco-conscious consumer is concerned, excellent beauty products and a healthy planet go together. So the vegan trend that has permeated society is here to stay and brands are aware now that they have to use ethical decision-making at every turn, without sacrificing quality. Consumers expect products to be just as effective and attractive but also sustainable. Vegan beauty is on the rise, and with so many brands joining in, it’s never been bigger, better, brighter or bolder.

SOLUTIONS ARE FROM VENUS With demand for non-invasive cosmetic procedures growing exponentially, Venus Concept has a range of solutions that you can offer to clients. Sarah Hickey and Siobhán Kavanagh, who joined the Venus family in 2015 and this year respectively, talk to us about the advantages of introducting an aesthetic option into your beauty business. Regional director at Venus Concept Sarah Hickey has been working in the aesthetics and beauty industry since 1997. She is a fully qualified Level 4 therapist with a passion for skin and improving skin quality, and previously worked with a company that was the first to launch laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) technology to skin clinics in Ireland. She has been with Venus Concept UK and Ireland since 2015 and is based in Donegal with a weekly trip to Dublin.

Clinical trainer for Ireland and sales representative at Venus Concept Siobhán Kavanagh joined the Venus family this year, however she has worked using various different devices before that.

What inspires you?

It is fascinating to watch the growth of skin clinics and to meet like-minded therapists who are passionate about changing and improving their clients’ skin. There is a huge amount of education available for skin therapists now and as a company Venus Concept now offers Level 4 training to further enhance our practitioners’ skills. We have our online Venus Academy, which is an educational portal where we can provide exceptional theory-based training and advanced skills training. I am inspired every day by our Venus Concept customers who reach out and want to continue to grow their businesses, get amazing results for their customers and drive their businesses forward. Many of our customers purchase multiple devices from us because of our support, our clinical excellence, and our interest-free payment plan that means they don’t have to go to their own bank or indeed secure expensive third-party financing.

How do you think the aesthetic industry is developing in Ireland at the moment? The aesthetic industry is growing exponentially and that is because people think very seriously before they have any sort of invasive procedure, typically two years for injectables and more than 10 years before they undertake to have a face lift. So the huge gap that exists in the market for non-surgical solutions is immense. We provide incredible solutions with proven clinical and exceptional treatment outcomes for all skin treatments, including sun damage, laxity and textural issues. We have treatments for acne clearance. We also provide treatments for body contouring, focal fat and skin tightening. We also have gold standard diode hair removal. We research closely what our patients are looking for and provide solutions.

What trends are going to be big in 2020?

Again for me its all about Skin. Our nano fractional MP2 Viva treatment has been featured in Vogue twice this year, patients are loving this treatment you can find life changing treatment results on Instagram – follow #venusviva you wont believe what can be acheived with this treatment. Also I think this year we will see huge growth in the uptake of body treatments, our Venus Concept Little Black Dress is a huge hit with customers as is our Venus Silhouette treatment for brides.

What would you say to other people looking to bring in an aesthetic option into their beauty business?

Do your research, find out what your clients want to spend their money on. In Ireland laser hair removal is still in extremely high demand and clients are looking for the absolute best results, delivered quickly from laser technicians. Our Venus Velocity device is the most profitable hair removal solution, Velocity by name and by nature – this is ultra fast, comfortable for all skin types and uses advanced diode technology . If you are a skin therapist, focus on skin. There is huge potential for growth in this sector and the ideal place to start is with #venusfreeze. This treatment feels like a hot stone massage and the name is a little confusing but it is all about freezing time. Most beauty businesses will have patients that are interested in anti-ageing solutions and #venusfreeze is step one of that skin journey.

Can you tell us a bit about how you began working within the professional beauty sector?

I loved working with lasers and as I advanced I became more fascinated by the skin’s own abilities to heal itself. Venus is a completely non-invasive treatment/solution to all skin conditions. I love that I am giving people confidence and encouragement to build their businesses and careers. I enjoy the diversity of the treatments provided by Venus, the fact the Viva is colour blind is amazing. A trainer is something I have always aspired to be and although other opportunities had come up me, I waited until this one with Venus came along as I knew it was something I could get behind happily.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired daily by so many things, but skin is my biggest passion – delivering high quality effective treatments into the mainstream and seeing businesses growing inspires me the most. How do you think the aesthetic industry is developing in Ireland at the moment? With the billions of dollars spent in research every year there is no end to where this industry could go. I’m excited for what the future entails.

What trends are going to be big next year?

These days people are looking for results but are seeking out a more natural solutions – non-surgical, non-invasive and minimal downtown, all of which Venus Concept delivers and much more.

What would you say to other people looking to bring in an aesthetic option into their beauty business?

If you are asking about us, Venus, I would say to stop thinking about it and just do it! You won’t regret it. The machine, whatever one you decide suits your business and style the best, will generate a massive income and your clients will be thrilled with their results. Everybody wins!

TPRX: A FORMULA FOR THE AGEING PROCESS

We all get old and so does our skin. But what really happens to our skin as we age? Advanced Aesthetics Academy explains how Mccosmetics can help. Visible signs of growing older include wrinkles, sagging skin and an increasing number of age spots, freckles, moles and other changes to pigmentation caused by sunlight. The skin becomes thinner and blood vessels become visible; our pores may also increase in size. There are changes beneath the surface too, as the collagen and elastic fibres that allow our skin to stretch start to degrade. One of the key substances in our skin, the hyaluronic acid, reduces over time, leaving our skin dryer and rougher. And there will be changes in skin tone, fat distribution and elasticity that later will mean facial contours. Aged skin retains less water and becomes dryer and thinner, making it more susceptible to irritation and infection, while wounds take longer to heal. What can we do to slow down the process? Mccosmetics suggests the TPRX. Due to its unique composition, the solution acts very quickly, and almost instantly, penetrates the dermis, activates skin regeneration and renewal without harming the epidermis. This means it does not only remove the toughened skin, but also penetrates deep inside, acts on the epidermal skin layer down to the basal layer, stimulating it to actively renew and regenerate. The TPRX has as main ingredients the tartaric acid, a-arbutine, kojic acid, and hydrogen peroxide. It is very efficient in the treatment of ageing skin as it has a powerful firming action. The skin becomes smoother and more uniform. And more astonishing, it shows results from the first session onwards, especially in the expression lines. Besides being suitable for the treatment of expression lines, it is also recommended for topical treatments of sunspots, melasma and scars.

CHOOSING

LASER TECHNOLOGY There are so many lasers on the market at wide variations in price, it is very confusing for clinics. Cocoon Medical explains what it is you need look for. Essentially there are four things you need to look for in choosing a laser to compete profitably in the laser hair removal market. Power: for permanent results you need high power to heat the base of the follicle to 70 degrees as which point the hair is destroyed. A minimum of 1800 watts if required to do so but the higher the better. Pulse duration: a very short pulse duration will achieve better result, particularly with lighter finer hairs, and it will also make the treatment more comfortable. To achieve a very short pulse duration you need a very powerful laser. Wavelength: choose a wavelength with maximum absorption in melanin, the target or conductor which delivers heat to the base of the follicle. Maximum melanin absorption in around 755-800nm so either 755nm (alexandrite) or 810nm (diode) are the gold standard, 755nm is limited to lighter skin types, diode is suitable for all skin types (as long as you have good cooling and pulse duration). Cooling: the ability to cool the skin surface whilst delivering high power laser into the skin requires sophisticated cooling technology, which surprisingly not many manufacturers have mastered. By keeping the skin surface consistently cool it protects the skin and allows delivery of high power down the follicle with minimum discomfort.

Primelase is the most powerful (4800 watts) diode-based laser for hair removal. With such power comes superior results and its unique ultra short pulse USP technology is as effective on lighter finer hairs as on darker thicker hairs. It offers a choice of four different wavelengths, including 755nm (alexandrite) 810nm (diode) and 1060nm (NdYAG). For those clinics and salons looking to introduce laser hair or that have a lower budget, Cocoon has the Elysion lasers: not quite as fast as Primelase, but faster than most, it offers best value in the market in terms of price and performance. Elysion is our most popular model and fast becoming a top seller in the UK market. Find out more at www.cocoonmedical.co.uk.

WRITTEN IN THE STARS! Planning to expand your business in 2020? Or launch some new products and services? Whatever your plans are, be they professional or personal, our horoscopes will give you some hints of what’s to be for you in the coming year! CAPRICORN (22 Dec-19 Jan) This year will see you strive for calm and tranquility. You will be tired of running and ready to take a well-earned break. Learn new ways to meditate and practice mindfulness. Maybe even have a go at yoga and take some sort of spiritual vacation to boost your mental and emotional health. When you are at peace with yourself Capricorn, you will be able to make the most of the opportunities that are presented to you in 2020. And there will be many!

AQUARIUS (20 Jan-18 Feb) This coming year is the one to prove yourself and your abilities. You can make those doubters go away! You’ll be at your creative peak this year as your imagination and innovative ideas are set to shine, especially in your profession. Show your loved ones that you can be your best version of yourself. But save some energy in the process in case you need to have some in reserve.

PISCES (19 Feb-20 Mar) Overall, 2020 will be an enjoyable year for Pisces. You can be a bit of a dreamer and this year sees some of those dreams come true, especially in career-related hopes. Make sure you keep your feet firmly on the ground, however, and don’t believe everything you are told if it sounds too good to be true. Those looking for love might have to wait another bit, but work will fill the void.

ARIES (21 Mar-19 Apr) Next year will be all about balance for those with the Aries star sign. While you will be ambitious, you will be more realistic about your goals. That said, change and new career opportunities will keep you occupied throughout the year. Stability will be seen in all aspects of your life, especially your relationships, and everything will come right for you. But you need to take the initiative to make the first move.

TAURUS (20 Apr-20 May) Calmness is on the horizon as it looks like you’ll ready to settle down this coming year Taurus! Important choices need to be made in 2020, whether this is in your career or relationships. Be sure before making decisions, being impulsive is not a good idea. Always be open to suggestions from smart people when it comes to financial issues.

GEMINI (21 May-20 June) It’s up to you to set the pace this year Gemini! If it feels too slow, then be more active. And if life seems to be too fast, then slow down. It’s your choice. The good news is that your love life will be fun and passionate. Finances will be steady and your job will be all-consuming. This is a year where you can take control and improve all areas of your life.

CANCER (21 Jun-22 Jul) There are changes on the horizon in 2020 with positives happening both in love and career. It’s up to you to choose to take up the opportunities or let them pass. Be careful of conflict in the workplace and pay attention to detail in the smaller parts of life and you’ll sail along. Remember, you are in charge so use that control wisely and to your own benefit.

LEO (23 Jul-22 Aug) Leos are going to be twisting and turning this year with lots of unexpected activity. They will be filled with vitality and vigor to achieve their dreams but make sure to retain some sense and don’t get carried away. You will be open to trying a lot of new stuff, just be cautious. A job change or a new business too might interest you. Life looks exciting, just stay in reality!

VIRGO (23 Aug-22 Sep) Known to be practical, Virgos might make some very impulsive decisions in 2020. A word of warning, this might lead to bad relationships or break-ups and problems in the workplace. Or even some bad financial moves. The 2020 sun sign predictions ask you to think twice before making any serious commitments in 2020. The good news is that it’s not a year to stand still and be happy with your lot either. Take the plunge, just be careful!

LIBRA (23 Sep-22 Oct) Easy times are coming Libra! So says your zodiac sign for 2020. This is a year to enjoy and make merry. You will not have many responsibilities towards family or your job, you are due to get some time out. So relax and rejuvenate your mind in preparation for the coming years. Single Librans will enjoy flirting and moving from one relationship to the other! Those who are attached can look forward to loving times.

SCORPIO (23 Oct-21 Nov) Liberation and freedom is on the way for you Scorpio. You will feel free of all restrictions and limitations in your life. This is a good time to focus on learning a new hobby or pastime, or improving your career skills. Use your positive energy to help others move forward in their lives, as well as yourself of course. The world is your oyster in 2020!

SAGITTARIUS (22 Nov-21 Dec) It’s a year of resolutions for the Sagittarius zodiac sign. You want success but remember to be patient. This is a good time to let go of your past baggage and clean up on different aspects of your life that have been getting to you. You’ll have an urge to meet new people and be a bit of a social butterfly, which is great but don’t let it impact on other relationships in your life. Money is looking good for 2020!

Do you research, find out what your clients want to spend their money on. In I reland laser hair removal is still in extremely high demand and clients are looking for the absolute best results, delivered quickly from laser technicians.

H

igh employee turnover impacts your reputation, work efficiency, your bottom line and, let us be honest, your mental health! Let’s step back for a moment and see where you can address the issue head-on. Firstly, just remember staff changes are inevitable, there are many motivators behind staff moving on. In order to understand your situation, you need to step back objectively and apply the basics.

Competency – don’t hire because you need to fill a role, ensure the competency level is there. It’s a musthave on your list. Ethics and value – you are not just recruiting employees, but are sowing the seeds of your reputation. Professionalism and ethical behaviour in the workplace is essential. Strive to embody your values and ethos as a professional and lead by example. Attitude improves productivity and effectiveness. Make sure they are a fit for your ethos and your team.
