NIMUE APPOINTS SKIN GURU AS LEAD SKINCARE SPECIALIST Nimue Skin Technology has announced the appointment of skin guru Farrah Fawcett (pictured inset) as lead skincare specialist.

SWEET SQUARED ANNOUNCES NEW RANGE OF LASHUS EXTENSIONS Following the launch of Lashus The Lift earlier this year, Sweet Squared has announced that this autumn it will be revealing its new range of Lashus extensions. According to Sweet Squared, Lashus has had technicians up and down the country go wild for its gentle stripped back formula with no nasties and highperforming, long-lasting results. It said that the new range will offer lashes of the highest quality on the market, providing techs with an excellent opportunity to grow their lash business and customer base with extension services. Key benefits of the extensions include great choice for customers, high profits for technicians and salons, results that last, and first-class class education and training. Sweet Squared will be holding a series of events around the country where pros and beginners can play with the products and learn all about Lashus extensions.

She’s passed her Nimue wisdom on to numerous students through her role as education ambassador and has supported the brand since it first came to the UK over 20 years ago. “Nimue has been a huge part of our success for 15 years and has given me the opportunities to expand and develop my business,” she said. “I’m thrilled to be representing a brand that I’m truly passionate about.” Fawcett started with a burning love and passion for the nail industry in 1998, which soon expanded and developed into a successful award-winning salon, employing six therapists specialising in advanced skincare techniques with a wide-ranging spa menu. Her extensive training ranges from studying make-up techniques in Bologna, Italy to advanced cosmetic procedures with Sterex UK. She has a clear business driven mindset and strives for success, ensuring she develops her team as individuals as well as professionals. Along with continuing to run her successful business and teach from Sweet Squared’s Leeds Academy, Fawcett’s new role will involve directing her knowledge to support fellow Nimue salons in order to achieve continual success.

PETER MARK MANE EVENT SUNDAY SERVICE EXPANDS TAKES PLACE AT HOUSE DUBLIN

The Mane Event took place recently at House Dublin, Leeson St after the Stenaline Dublin Horse Show. Hosted by Great Lengths ambassador Lottie Ryan, the evening saw a host of ladies descend on House to take part in a best dressed competition, celebrating all things hats and hair. VIP guests on the evening included Great Lengths ambassadors Holly Carpenter, Rebecca Rose Quigley, Emma Power, Brittany Mason and newly crowned Miss Universe Ireland Fionnghuala O’Reilly. Judges on the evening were Irish milliner Margaret O’Connor, fashion editor Elle Gordon and top Irish model Aoife Walsh. Linda Malone from Co Meath was the winner of the main prize for the best headpiece and walked away with a €1,000 voucher for Great Lengths, a bespoke Margaret O’Connor hat and an overnight stay and dinner for two in House Dublin. Established over 25 years ago, Great Lengths’ premium quality human hair extensions can now be found in over 60 countries across the world. The finished product is available in a vast selection of glossy tones and lengths, and suitable for all hair types. Focusing on quality, all Great Lengths hair is 100pc human and 100pc ethical.

A total of 29 Peter Mark salons nationwide are now open for service seven days a week. The hairdressing chain wants its customers to use its Peter Mark Sunday Service and get their hair done at a time most convenient for them. “We always want your hair appointment to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience so if squeezing a cut or colour into your schedule is causing you stress, make Sunday a self-care day and unwind with Peter Mark,” it said. “Our home hair care retail will also be available on Sundays, making it even easier to stock up on your favourite products.” Meanwhile during the summer Peter Mark launched its Braid Bar in salons nationwide. The specially created Braid Bar menu serves six looks to choose from, all priced €20. According to Peter Mark, whether it is high humidity or pouring down rain, braids are the ultimate way to keep hair looking on point, and a braid doesn’t need to be just for a festival as it’s also a super stylish way to wear hair to a wedding or for a Saturday night out. The six styles are Tousled Braided Bangs, Fishtail Braid, Double Dutch Braid, Double French Braid, Halo Braid and Unicorn Braid.

SEAN TAAFFE

MARKS 30-YEAR MILESTONE Co Kerry-based Sean Taaffe recently celebrated 30 years in business since he opened his first salon on Langford St, Killorglin. Celebrations having been taking place in Taaffe’s salons around the county, with cake being cut on the day itself, 15 August, in the Killorglin outlet. “Thank you to all our clients over the years past and present,” Taaffe wrote on the business’s Facebook page. Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty was established in 1989 as a one-man operation in Killorglin. Since then the company has expanded six times, with locations in Killarney, Tralee and Killorglin and a team of over 60 professionals. In July the Killarney salon on Lewis Road in the town relaunched following seven months of refurbishments. The business went from 24 stations to 38, including five barber stations with red and chrome chairs specially imported, and added some new features including a Nespresso coffee dock that serves both clients and members of the public, as well as a retail area where customers can browse the new retail space or relax in the new waiting area. The relaunch coincided with Taaffe launching a professional tool range, including precision hairdressing scissors and cutting combs. “It all started with people continually asking when we were teaching seminars where they could get the tools we use, and we saw a niche in the market,” he said. The new equipment is available from the Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty website and Facebook page. Taaffe recently scooped Editorial Image of the Year at the Best of the Best: Irish Hair Photographic Awards. “I’m absolutely thrilled with the win, delighted to continue to be at the forefront of hairdressing 30 years on, I’d like to thank my team for their continued loyalty and hard work,” he said at the ceremony in Dublin. He is also president of the Hairdressing Council of Ireland and the business was the official hair partner to the recent Rose of Tralee festival, which celebrated 60 years in 2019.

INDUSTRY NEWS BRIEFS

Following the success of the 2019 Salon Retail Week, Phorest held a webinar collaboration to help salons continue to smash targets and increase revenue. Hosted by HPS salon business coach David Barnett, it taught the three-step salon retail technique that has helped salons around the world smash their targets again and again. Barnett continues to help salons across the globe reach their full potential and see their retail and income increase significantly, and Phorest invited salons across the UK and Ireland to join him for the exclusive session on 2 September to see how they can join the retail revolution. Salon Retail Week is a Phorest initiative designed for salons to increase their revenue and hit targets. For one week, daily challenges are sent out to participants, allowing them to increase their revenue by up to 78pc in one week.

Hair extensions brand Racoon International has announced that it is holding an X-Factor style recruitment day to meet new talent and ‘new voices’ to join the existing Racoon artistic team. Interviews are being held on 1 October at Wella World Studios London. Leading the team artistically is creative director Andrew Barton, multi-award winning celebrity hairdresser and former British Hairdresser of the Year. “We are looking to enhance and expand on the current team with an elite group of highly skilled extensionists and hair artists who will represent the Racoon brand at various creative initiatives throughout the year, both consumer and trade facing projects,” he said. Racoon is looking for ambitious, creative individuals who can bring their energy and commitment to the team and its creativity of working with hair extensions. Brow lamination has arrived in Ireland. From Bronze Direct, this is a new treatment for shaping, straightening and strengthening the brow hairs, and it’s perfect for clients who have brows that grow in different directions. With the BrowTycoon Brow Shaper lamination system the brows can be realigned in such a way to give them a fuller look and the desired shape the client wants. This treatment solves the messy brow issue, creates volume and fullness, whilst giving clients a sleek brow shape for up to six to eight weeks. With a new protein composition based on liquid keratin and silicone you can also encourage brow growth by creating a protective film around the hair. Bronze Direct will be announcing training dates across Ireland at venues including Dublin, Belfast, Limerick and Cork. Contact Bronze Direct on tel: 01636 3138 for more information on prices and course dates. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced that its entire hotel estate of almost 843,000 guest rooms will switch to bulk-size bathroom amenities, with the transition to be completed during 2021. IHG brands include the Holiday Inn and the Crowne Plaza and the group has numerous hotels in Ireland. The pledge is building on its efforts to reduce plastic waste as part of a broader sustainability agenda and makes it the first global hotel company to commit all brands to removing bathroom miniatures in favour of bulk-size amenities. IHG currently has an average of 200 million bathroom miniatures in use across its entire hotel estate every year. As the new brand standard is adopted between now and 2021, the company expects to see a significant reduction in plastic waste.

In company with

A FAMILY AFFAIR Nicola Mealia is managing director of Chleo Enterprises, which was founded in 1987 by her mother Katherine Hurley. They chat to Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine about what makes the family business special. Chleo Enterprises was born in 1987 when Nicola Mealia was just 14 years old and her mother Katherine Hurley started the business from scratch. “Nicola worked most of her school holidays with me in Chleo out of choice,” explains Katherine. “She studied at third level and then worked in the UK for a few years where she learned a lot and later brought these new experiences home.” “I admired my mum from such an early age,” says Nicola. “She managed to juggle Chleo and rear four children. None of us were ever handed anything on a plate and it was not a given that we would be able to enter the family business. Family policy was that we had to do our own thing first and bring something to the business.”

Nicola therefore set about getting a degree in fashion design and followed this up with a couple of years working in the buying team in the then Burton Group in London (Debenhams, Top Shop, Dorothy Perkins, Burton Menswear). She returned home nearly 20 years ago to join the family business before taking over as managing director in 2003 when her mother retired. “I asked my mum for an opportunity to join Chleo and I haven’t looked back. Working together was great. Mum saw Chleo as another child and still does to this day. She retired about 16 years ago but I don’t think she will ever fully let go! ”Having a family member who was committed, loyal and computer literate was a brilliant asset, says Katherine. “Having someone to share the highs and the anxieties over the years was great. Our suppliers and customers loved the family connection. It gave them confidence in the service we could offer and credibility in our business plans going forward.” Complementing strengths Nicola believes that while her mum was still an active part of the business they complemented each other with their strengths. “We have the same standards and beliefs and always understood that it is all about the customer. I was lucky to be able to learn from someone who knew the industry and was so highly regarded. We understood that choosing a product range was a decision not to be taken lightly, she chose incredible brands and I have added one or two to our portfolio since. However, we always believed that people buy people and the customer journey with Chleo was so important to us both. Mum had a flair for sales and an honesty about her that I hope I have inherited!” Trust in a relationship, be it business or personal, is key, stresses Nicola. “We trusted each other to get the job done to the highest standard and we had lots of laughter and tears along the way. I am very proud to have grown and developed on what she started and I am very fortunate now to work with my younger brother Richard who has also brought his experiences to Chleo. Richard joined the family business over 5 years ago bringing his banking and retail experience with him enabling us to get stronger in other distribution channels.”

Pictured above: MD of Chleo Enterprises Nicola Mealia and inset: Katherine Hurley and Nicola’s dad Jim.

Nicola’s dad Jim was also always a rock behind them, even though he had a successful business of his own, adds Nicola. “If we need advice we are lucky to still have him. He was definitely an important part of this family team. We truly are a family affair!”

PROTECTING YOUR

PROFITS Protecting your hard earned profits can sometimes be overlooked as retailers tackle the challenges of day-to-day business, according to Dolmen Systems. Retailers and businesses today face many challenges, from high rents and rates, to online shopping reducing their sales, high insurance premiums and, of course, losses from shoplifting, theft and armed raids. Addressing the area of security in your premises need not be a daunting task. Dolmen Systems has over 25 years’ experience offering security solutions to retailers and with a huge emphasis on pharmacies, beauty and hair salons. It knows what is needed to protect your business from shoplifters, burglars and armed raiders, with products ranging from CCTV systems to safes to anti-shoplifting systems and with procedures and guidelines for the use of these products, Dolmen Systems has developed a security portfolio for retailers. The company offers a full nationwide installation, maintenance and advice service Risk minimisation is key to ensuring your profits are protected. This means implementing procedures and installing the right equipment to ensure that staff, customers, stock and cash are protected. Statistically crime is on the increase. Shoplifting and raids are increasing. Hair and beauty salons are being targeted for their highly sought after (and indeed expensive) equipment. Those dealing in cash sales are vulnerable to over the counter smash and grab raids. Business insurance premium hikes is big news now. One of the causes for this we are told is false or exaggerated insurance claims. A good quality CCTV system will help guard against false claims as they provide a record of what actually took place rather than a he said she said scenario.

HAS DOLMEN SYSTEMS ANY ADVICE FOR SALONS? 1.

Install a good quality, reliable CCTV system and check it on a regular basis.

2.

Keep only a working float in your till and all other cash in a made for purpose anti-hold-up safe.

3.

Emulate our European neighbours and embrace anti-shoplifting tagging systems – they work!

4.

Effectively use signage to discourage, deter and inform.

5.

Initiate and implement effective security procedures and systems and be vigilant.

Dolmen Systems is happy to give free quotations for any of its products, including CCTV systems, tagging systems and cash safes. Call 045 480828 or email dolmensystems@gmail.com.

Shake up your facial! Resurfacing meets recovery in this daily bi-phase peel that rejuvenates and nourishes for a vibrant glow

Why is it different?

Murad’s exfoliation legacy

Treat your skin to exfoliation the way youthful skin intended – effective not aggressive.

Dr. Murad is a pioneer in exfoliation. In the 1980s, he was one of the first to use glycolic acid in his dermatological practice for significant, measurable results on the skin without surgery.

Unlike other peels that only remove the surface layer of skin, Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel combines multi-level exfoliation, youth-boosting treatment and intensive nourishment to take your skin from dull to glow in just one step all while being gentle on skin.

How does it work? AHA blend (glycolic, lactic and malic acids) Multi-benefit exfoliants that remove dull surface cells to smooth and improve skin texture, brightness and clarity over time. BHA (salicylic acid) Removes pore-clogging debris for a clearer complexion. TXA (tranexamic acid) TXA helps soothe, brighten, revive dull skin and even tone. Holy basil Adaptogenic herb with antioxidants and soothing benefits to help skin fight oxidative stress (such as pollution) and help calm skin.

DID YOU KNOW? Over time, cell renewal can be 7 times slower, resulting in dullness, deeper lines and uneven texture and tone.

In 1990, Murad skincare products gave clients the ability to achieve professional AHA results at home. Today, our commitment to exfoliation and skin health continues with Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel. Our AHA/BHA/TXA blend plus lipids deliver daily controlled exfoliation for a healthy peel without downtime.

RESULTS: In 7 days: Accelerates cell renewal by 33%*. In 4 weeks: 96% saw smoother texture*. 88% saw more radiant skin*. 84% noticed brighter skin and more even tone*. 84% noticed healthier-looking, more nourished skin*.

Replenishing Multi-Acid Peel RRP: €55

To use: SHAKE WELL. Use in the PM. Dispense onto cotton pad and sweep over face, neck and chest. Do not rinse. Slight tingling is normal. Reduce frequency if sensitivity occurs. For a business consultation or to find out more about Murad in your spa, salon or clinic, email jenny@murad.co.uk or call 085 7442427. Upon qualification, you will receive an exclusive Murad gift and support pack. Read Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine online at www.salonmagazine.ie

Key treatments available in the Malmaison Spas include the Nimue signature treatments such as the Active Rejuvenation Peel, which combats sun damage and wrinkles and boosts elasticity, and the unique Thermal Detox Peel ‘flash facial’, which delivers instant hydration and all-round radiance in only 30 minutes. “We have been looking to add a results focused skincare brand to the offering in

our Malmaison Spas for a long time. We felt that Nimue and Sweet Squared would be the perfect partners for us to venture into the cosmeceutical category,” said Malmaison Spa manager Luci Raybould. “This move is a first for the group but when we discovered Nimue we knew it had the right range of advanced performance products and treatments for our clients.” Nimue requires that all therapists are Level 3 trained to ensure they have the underpinning knowledge needed to utilise the products and treatments correctly and deliver optimum results for clients. “Our teams of therapists have all competed their Core Nimue training and we are all very excited to get Nimue launched and start seeing some amazing results for our spa guests,” added Raybould.

NATURE

CARTON HOUSE HOTEL

Since last summer, Pevonia has been the product of choice at Carton House Spa in Co Kildare. Pevonia launched in 1991 and quickly became established as one of the premier skin, body and spa lines internationally. It now boasts 50pc of the professional skincare market in the USA and is distributed in almost 130 countries.

P

evonia provides effective natural skincare solutions to men and women of all ages, every skin type and ethnicity. Nature’s purest holistic, botanical and marine elements synergise with high-tech manufacturing to deliver remarkable, visible results. Salon and Spa Ireland magazine’s Linda Horan took a trip to Carton House to experience one of Pevonia’s speciality, high performance facials. In a case of two forces of nature coming together, Carton House, one of Ireland’s most historic resorts, announced the introduction of Pevonia to its Carton House Spa during the summer of 2018. Pevonia spas are sanctuaries of physical and sensual enrichment, offering enhanced experiences that dynamically treat both inside and out. Carton House is no exception. The spa, nestled in the heart of the 1,100-acre private estate in Maynooth, is a secluded and peaceful respite from the outside world, set amongst ancient woodlands along the banks of the River Rye. Carton House Spa & Wellness, found within the mindfully restored 18th century Georgian building, offers complete relaxation and contemporary

surroundings, along with seven, serene and beautiful, treatment rooms. “We are very proud to be the only resort in Co Kildare offering Pevonia, the award winning product range favoured by the world’s most prestigious spas.” said Eoin O’Sullivan, general manager at Carton House. The arrival of Pevonia has seen the spa launch a new treatment menu, which includes a range of rejuvenating face and body treatments. These include the Luminous C & Sea Mask Treatment to brighten and refresh dull and dehydrated skin; a range of calming and soothing facials; exfoliation treatments; massages; eye treatments; and body wraps – such as Papaya– Pineapple Crème Fraiche Wrap – Tropical Escape to nourish and smooth skin. Pevonia provides spas with the knowledge and techniques that reveal the results of the repairing and rejuvenating actives found within their skin care ranges. The products do not contain chemical filters, mineral oil, lanolin, parabens, SLS, urea, alcohol, nor artificial fragrances and colours

The carefully curated menu of natural, botanical and marine treatments and bespoke skincare solutions work to restore, de-age and revitalise every skin type. During her visit Linda was treated to the anti-ageing Lumafirm Lift & Glow facial. The 55-minute treatment is ideal for those looking for visible, instant results and will give cumulative skincare benefits when booked as a course. Redefining radiance and facial contouring, this exclusively formulated treatment features the latest in freeze-dried technology. It is great for any skin type showing signs of ageing and will help you look your absolute best. The facial renders skin ultra-luminous, with a firmer, tighter and more youthfully defined appearance. “It’s difficult to make enough time for myself and I arrived at Carton House thinking about work and all the things I had to do,” said Linda. “When I left I was infinitely more relaxed and I understand the concept of wellness, and the holistic approach, so much more now. I was incredibly well looked after from my arrival through to departure.

CARTON HOUSE SPA & WELLNESS

I started and completed my journey in the Relaxation Room, wrapped in a Carton House robe. This is a wonderful, peaceful, space with a range of refreshing drinks and healthy snacks on offer. It was here that I met my therapist, Alla. “Once I was in the softly lit treatment room, Alla performed the Pevonia Treatment Welcome Wellness Ritual before cleansing my eyes, lips, face, neck and décolleté. My eyes were covered with pads moistened with Anti-Stress Eye Lotion before Clear-O-Zym was brushed over my face and neck. This is an enzyme peel used to increase skin’s pliability, relieve congestion and facilitate the extractions that were performed after steaming the area for 10 minutes. Next, the bubbly Phyto-Gel Cleanser was gently worked into my skin where the enzymes were present. Gauze was used to blot away excess bubbles, then a towel thoroughly removed the product, before lotion was reapplied to my skin. Using a brush, Alla applied the Lumafirm Freeze-Dried treatment to my face, neck and décolleté. This product hydrates, protects, firms, lifts, lightens, brightens, repairs and redefines. My therapist concentrated on areas of concern, massaging the area using lifting upward movements, for around 10 minutes.

“Lumafirm Repair Mask was then applied over my face and neck, then left for a further 10 minutes. This hydrates, protects, firms, increases elasticity, brightens, repairs and decongests the skin. During this time, Alla performed the treatment conclusion Wellness Ritual using Tension Relief Gel on my legs and feet. After the 10 minutes, my mask was loosened with water.

Once it had changed to a creamy consistency, the mask was removed with a cool towel and lotion reapplied to my skin. Lumafirm Eye Contour was gently applied to the eye area and Lumafirm Repair Cream to my face and neck. “The treatment concluded with a wonderful Hot Towel Neck Roll and a spritz of Phyto-Aromatic Mist. Alla gave me invaluable feedback on my skin and products to use at home. I work in front of a computer screen and don’t get out in the fresh air as much as I’d like, so it was great to look in the mirror and notice a brightness after the facial. Because I’m so busy too, being a working mother, it was great to have something done for me in under an hour.”

Having established that a good marketing plan will help your salon receive the attention it deserves and outlining some ways in which you can create your own content, now let’s look at the power of video content and how it can help you with your digital markeitng strategy. Make video updates and explainer videos Visual submissions are big. Within a survey of 300 content marketers by Venngage on visual content marketing, 45.5pc predict that 80pc of companies would be heavily dependent on visuals within their marketing work. Also, the most significant test for content marketers is creating content time after time (34.8pc); the next biggest test is creating really superior content (31.3pc). With rapid changing social media rules, you have to create content that stays with the audience. Visuals, especially video content, is the best way to have more reach and action on the content. And remember, your business, be it a hair or beauty salon or a spa, is all about the visual. You can utilise your smartphone or perhaps a professional camera to take videos and edit them while using the (free) apps. Another way to seize the potency of video will be to quickly bring across your message in animated explainer videos.

It’s YouTube title is ‘What Is An Explainer Video & Why Your Business Needs One?’ and it’s by WowMakers Digital Experience Studio. What are things to add to an explainer video? 1. The issue – address the discomfort. 2. The answer – present the product or service as being the solution. 3. How it operates – how to begin using the solution. 4. A call to action (CTA) – critical and make it aimed at No 1. 5. Make sure to sell the key benefits of the product or service, not the functions. 6. Think just like a user: audiences can relate to explainer videos, so think about things from a user perspective.

A GO-TO SPA DIGITAL PLATFORM A new digital platform promoting spas and wellness breaks in Ireland has been launched. Go To The Spa (www.gotothespa.ie) is also filled with information about their treatments, health experiences, products and yoga retreats. Inpired by Heidi Grimwood’s and Eileen Fleming’s love and passion for the spa industry and all things digital, they set up the platform when, working as spa consultants, they identified that many spas needed a louder voice online. They went on to create a showcase of spa offerings with a geo targeted directory through interviews, promotions, product reviews, blogs, vlogs and much more. The platform also offers gift vouchers. “Go To The Spa is targeting the female millennial and generation X demographic who have disposable income and who have an interest in spas and wellness,” Heidi explains. “They are looking for the most effective ways to improve their health and manage their stress levels in the most natural way possible. They are interested in the latest wellness trends and the latest treatment packages and promotions. ”The duo’s goal is to be the No 1 platform in Ireland for spas and wellness breaks where consumers can get real-time up to date information on what, where and when it’s happening. “We want our gift vouchers to be the No 1

choice when consumers are purchasing gifts. We’re trying to make it easier for consumers to decide on and choose which spa treatment, spa package or well-being break is the best for them. By having the most up to date information available in one place at the click of a button, we simplify the process for consumers.” Digital direction Grimwood has been working as a spa consultant since 2013 and during that time she discovered most spas she visited were not using digital marketing to its full advantage, whether it was due to time restraints or lack of knowledge. She decided to collate all of the information and make it available on one platform rather than marketing individual businesses. “The user experience has changed very much over the last few years, with a serious reduction in their attention span online. The demand for absorbing information from multiple channels, including high resolution imagery, videos, blog posts and exclusive promotions, is never ending. As such it’s

always a challenge to product a constant flow of engaging content to ensure the customer comes back. “As international spa consultants, we are actively working in the spa industry every single day. Working on-site with spa professionals, we understand the needs of the spa owner and the spa consumer, this is what we do all day every day. Our blogs and vlogs are written from our own experience as a consumer and as an industry professional, which perfectly positions us to answer the key consumer questions.” For more information, contact Heidi Grimwood at 085-7330038 or Eileen Fleming at 086-6087510 or e mailinfo@gotothespa.ie.

With so much happening in the industry at the moment, there’s never been a better time to book a seat at The Sunbed Association’s Shine event, writes Joe McGlinchey.

T

Plus, it’s an excellent, friendly, networking opportunity where you will meet other like-minded operators from our industry – from new business set-ups, single site operators through to the largest industry chains. BOOSTING BUSINESS WITH FESTIVE VOUCHERS

Christmas is always an opportune time of the year to make some profit for your beauty salon or spa and to increase beauty retail sales, writes beauty business expert Liz McKeon.

S

elling gift vouchers or gift cards is a great way to keep clients coming back and stay busy after the holiday season. Gift vouchers can prompt multiple appointments because the voucher has already been paid for. Here are some easy ways to increase your Christmas voucher sales: •

Place gift vouchers around the salon. Use these items as part of the decor, so that clients are aware that gift vouchers are available. Change these items at least once per week to maximise exposure.

Send an email newsletter to your database highlighting the benefits of gift vouchers. Announcements about gift voucher availability can help to increase voucher sales and promote your brand. Make sure to time your email distribution appropriately. A 10-day lead time before the Christmas rush is a good starting point to help clients begin thinking about giving your vouchers as gifts.

44

Make sure your salon contains informa-

tion about gift vouchers. Ensure your website is up to date about how easy it is to purchase gift vouchers from you. Provide lots of information about gift voucher availability, highlighting the benefits of giving a gift voucher to your salon. •

Offer free gift wrapping. Clients and shoppers appreciate this extra touch and this step adds more perceived value to the purchase. Invest in some eye-catching envelopes, decorative ribbon or small gift boxes for your vouchers and turn it into a real ‘gift’.

Include a coupon or offer with purchase. Give the giver a small gift such as a free product, a coupon for a future service they can use for themselves. Incentives to purchase a gift voucher can boost salon retail sales and encourage more clients to turn to you instead of a competitor when narrowing down the field of choices.

Read Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine online at www.salonmagazine.ie

Selling gift vouchers regularly helps to secure your business and help to maintain a healthy cash flow. With the right marketing strategy it can help to promote your brand too. Continue to focus on increasing voucher sales all year round and keep your appointment books full, even during the non-holiday season!

PARENTAL LEAVE

EXPLAINED

The Parental Leave (Amendment) Act 2019 came into effect on 19 July and it increases the number of weeks each parent can avail of and the age threshold of the child, writes The HR Company’s Linda Ward. The changes from the new Act are as follows: • •

Each parent now qualifies for 22 weeks parental leave from 1 September 2019. They can apply for the leave now and the leave can commence from 1 September 2019. The age threshold of the child has increased from eight years to 12 years. The age threshold has remained at 16 years for a child with a disability.

The result of these changes means that parents who have used some or all of their parental leave by the time the child reached eight years of age have now come back into scope. This means that those parents are now entitled to take the extra and/or additional parental leave in one-week blocks. This new change applies to the following scenarios: • •

Employees who took all of their 18 weeks parental leave before their child reached eight years are now back in scope due to the increased age threshold. Employees who took some of their parental leave but did not use all of their entitlement before the child reached eight years can now take those outstanding weeks plus the additional weeks before the child reaches 12 years of age.

Parents who have never taken any parental leave are entitled to take the parental leave as follows: • • •

A continuous block of 22 weeks. Two separate periods of a minimum of six weeks each. If the leave is taken in this manner there must be at least 10 weeks between each separate period of leave taken. With the agreement of the employer the parental leave may be broken into hours or days.

The amount of parental leave will increase to 26 weeks on 1 September in 2020. In addition to this new change, from 1

November 2019, the new Parental Leave and Benefit Bill 2019 will come into force. This is a paid type of leave that will give each parent two weeks paid parental leave that must be taken within the first year of the child’s life. The Government has stated it will extend this leave to seven weeks by 2021. The increases will be announced in the Budget. The payment for this leave is €245 per week and it will be paid for by the State. The main points from the new Bill are that: • Each parent will be entitled to the leave where the birth date of the child falls on or after 1 November 2019 or the day of placement in the case of adoption if it is on or after 1 November 2019. • An employee must have 12 months continuous service to qualify. • The leave cannot be transferred between parents except in the case where one parent dies then all or the remaining leave is transferred to the other parent. • The parental leave operates on a use it or lose it basis. • The parental leave cannot be taken before the date of birth or in the case of adoption, before the date of placement. • Employees can take the leave in one-week blocks. • It is protected leave so employees accrue annual leave and public holiday entitlements and all their other conditions of employment remain the same when they return to work. • The employee must give their employer a minimum of four weeks written notice of their intention to take this leave (this notice period may change). The HR Company was founded in 2001. From the smallest of business to the largest of corporations, The HR Company provides the same, hands-on care with solutions particular to the customer’s needs. tel: 01 2911877 or email: linda.ward@thehrcompany.ie.

GOOD RECORDS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Certified insurance practitioner Brian Mullins explains the importance of patch testing and consultation/consent forms. Most insurance companies and (manufacturer) product producers require that potential clients are patch tested prior to treatment. Patch tests are extremely important in identifying whether the product is suitable for each individual client. By doing a patch test you are minimising the risk of adverse reactions to treatment, which may lead to possible claims. You are also greatly reducing the risk of a claim being taken against you. When a claim is made for personal injuries, it is in fact a claim for negligence against a salon or therapist. The best defence that you can offer your business is to ensure that your client record cards and client consent forms clearly outline the pre and post-care steps that you have taken, thereby showing that you or your therapist have taken every precaution to avoid an injury being caused to your client. If you do not retain adequate records, then you may have jeopardised your insurance company’s ability to defend you in a claim for negligence, and they may then decide that you have broken one of the conditions of the policy and ultimately they may not provide cover to you or your business in respect of a particular claim.

Client record cards and consent forms should be held for a minimum of five years and they should be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that the correct information is being stored and updated as these really are the first line of defence for you should a claim for negligence be taken. If you do receive a solicitor’s letter outlining a claim for negligence following personal injuries that your client is alleged to have suffered as a result of a treatment that you or your salon have provided, do not panic. Start by pulling your records together, • • • •

Client record card Client consultation form Copy of the therapist’s qualifications Statement from the therapist who carried out the treatment

All of the above together with the solicitor’s letter should be sent to your professional insurance broker who will then liaise with your insurance company. We will provide further details of what to do when you receive a solicitor’s letter in the next issue of Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine. DEATH LOOK

WITCH LOOK Step 1: Identify the natural wrinkle lines of the face and draw them in with fine lines using a small brush (eg Sunaura Badgerlon Brush size 3) and the darker shades of Kryolan Old Age Stipple Wheel.

Step 1: Prime the face withan anti-shine primer such as Kryolan Invisible Matt Plus Cream. Step 2: Apply most of the shades from the Ben Nye Death Wheel all over the face. Apply the remaining shades of the wheel to the outer and inner corners of the eyes, and to some parts of the face, to give different texture to the skin.

4th step

Step 2: Dab a thin layer of Kryolan Liquid Latex all over the face using a small make-up sponge and leave to dry. Repeat this three more times to get a nice wrinkly effect, then add a pre-painted prosthetic nose using Kryolan Spirit Gum and powder everything down with Ben Nye Neutral Set Powder. The Woochie Witch Noses work really well for this, and can be painted in advance with the Graftobian Rubber Mask Grease Wheel, in Derma.

Step 3: Break the latex up in a few places using a small tweezers, in places where you want your spots. Apply some Kryolan Fresh Scratch using a small Stipple Sponge.

Step 4: Add some Graftobian Clown White to the eyebrows to age them and glue on some streaks of Crepe Hair in a Salt n Pepper shade, using Spirit Gum, to give a streaky old effect to the hair.

MAEKUP CLOTTED BLOOD

Step 3: Powder down the face, including the lips, using a translucent powder such as Ben Nye Neutral Set Powder. BEN NYE DEATH WHEEL

Step 4: Drizzle some Makeup Clotted Blood around the nose area to create a bleeding effect.

HALF FACE SKELETON MAKE-UP LOOK Step 1: Roughly map out the

skeleton on the face using black pencil (Grimas Black Khol works well).

Step 2: Add Graftobian Clown White using the flat Sunaura Badgerlon Brush size 12 and gently powder it down with Graftobian Pro Setting Power, in the shade Clown White. Step 3: Use Kryolan Cream Liner

in black and a thin brush (Sunaura Badgerlon Brush size 3) to add definition to your half skull.

4th step

BEN NYE BLACK EYE SHADOW

Step 4: Draw teeth using a small

detailed brush (Sunaura Small Pencil Brush), with a strongly pigmented black eyeshadow (eg Ben Nye Black Eyeshadow) and finally complete the look by shading areas where you applied black lines, just to defuse them a little.

AESTHETIC

APPEAL A recent report written by Rachel Stires from Wolfgang Media and published on Bank of Ireland’s ThinkBusiness.ie looked at Ireland’s most popular beauty trends so far this year, and the treatments offered by aesthetic clinics were found to be more popular than ever. Aesthetic clinics have seen a huge surge in popularity among Irish consumers over the past decade, with many opting for less invasive non-cosmetic treatments that can be easier on both the body and the bank balance, but with similar results. Ultrasound facelift Sometimes referred to as high-intensity focused ultrasound (or HIFU), this treatment offers many of the medium-term benefits of a traditional facelift, without the fear of a scalpel or local anaesthetic. The process involves the use of ultrasound to safely tighten and lift the facial skin and are designed in such a way that the surface of your skin will be protected while simultaneously ensuring that the laser energy penetrates the foundation and dermis layers, where fat deposits are found and structural weaknesses tend to stem from. Mesotherapy Derived from French medicinal practices from the 1950s, this technique can be used to treat many areas including face lifts, hair restoration and fat reduction via the application of micro-injections of amino acids and vitamins into the layer of the skin called the ‘mesoderm’. This mesoderm is where ‘mesotherapy’ gets its name from and its prominent rise in popularity in Ireland has seen mesotherapy become a staple on the menu of offerings at all major beauty clinics in recent years. Cryotherapy With origins in Ancient Greece, the art of cryotherapy, or ‘cold therapy’, is hitting Irish high street beauticians at a fast pace due to its low levels of intrusion and general affordability. The procedure itself involves treating benign lesions on the skin which can dramatically reduce the appearance of skin imperfections, erasing unwanted tissues without interfering with the healthy tissues that surround your specific problem area.

56

Microneedling Microneedling is best defined as a dermaroller procedure that uses small needles to prick the skin. It’s very on-trend this year among the current crop of celebrities and beauty influencers, including Kim Kardashian. The main purpose of this treatment is to promote the generation of newly formed collagen and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin on the treatment area, and the results are reportedly outstanding. It’s mostly used on the face and may treat various scars, wrinkles and large pores. A word on cosmetic surgery When it comes to traditional cosmetic surgery, while we’re nowhere near the consumption levels of our US or even western European counterparts when it comes to demand for it, 2019 has seen record growth in its popularity, according to Stires. That said, some trends are unnecessary – they’re growing in popularity, but that doesn’t mean they’re worth pursuing. For instance, seeking low-cost cosmetic surgery abroad is not advised. Conclusion With 2019 blending some old and new cosmetic surgery trends, the year may throw us some more surprises yet. Regardless of the procedure, however, Stires says it’s vital a person educates themselves on the process, the benefits and the potential contraindications should it not prove what they were looking for. Homework needs to be done, relevant practitioner contacted and a person should always ensure their body is compatible with the journey ahead. As ever, it pays to always aim for a clinician who is adequately indemnified and who has plenty of experience. Safety and aftercare should always be considered.

ACADÉMIE TOTALCARE Académie Totalcare is launching new and improved courses in modern electrolysis and thermocoagulation. Electrolysis permanently eliminates the cells responsible for hair growth by inserting a small probe in the hair follicle and emitting an ultra-fast current. Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) are two very popular but limited methods. Thermocoagulation is a specialised treatment using high-frequency current to remove skin vascular imperfections such as spider veins, birthmarks, cherry spots, etc. This course is perfect for the professional who wishes to expand their business by providing an additional service to their clientele.

But what makes our courses different from the rest? 1. Study at your own pace – by studying online, you can study when it suits you. 2. Richer and more interactive content – the platform of the online electrolysis course gives access to all the required teaching materials in a highly visual way. 3. Be ready for the practical part – once the online theory is completed, the student is required to report to Académie Totalcare in order to follow the practical portion of the course. 4. International accreditation – our courses are accredited by Canadian and American bodies. This means that you are Brexit ready. MIGHTY APHRODITE Meet the first Irish-based clinic to offer Jett Plasma skin tightening treatment to clients. Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine caught up with Sabrina Crowe, whose Aphrodite Clinic in Clane, Co Kildare, is the first Irish-based clinic to offer the revolutionary Jett Plasma skin tightening treatments to her clients. Sabrina has always been to the forefront of the latest technology breaking through in the aesthetics and beauty industry, she also pioneered the then unknown 3D Lipo treatments in Ireland back in the Noughties. We asked Sabrina about her current projects and what challenges she sees ahead for the aesthetics industry in Ireland.

So you are the first clinic in Ireland to invest in the Jett Plasma Pen. How are you and your clients finding it? It was quiet at the beginning as people were not aware of how advanced the technology has become since the arrival of DC Plasma, state-of-the-art medical grade devices in ionised science. Its non-surgical procedure can be performed in under 45 minutes with 50pc less downtime due to its patented technology. Now we have clients travelling from all over the country just to try it. When they see the results their friends that have had Jett Plasma procedures have achieved they are quick to book appointments. Word of mouth has been a great tool for us and we recently hired a new staff member to help with the extra workload. While it was a premium priced device, (over ₏8,000), I have recouped my initial outlay already as the pen has no competition in the high end, quality niche it occupies in the non-surgical aesthetics market. What makes the Jett Plasma Pen different from other plasma pens on the market? It’s like comparing a Ferrari to a Fiat, there is a big difference in quality, treatment versatility and safety. The Jett device is built in the EU, not China, and most importantly for my clients, it is medically certified, which allows me to obtain insurance for the treatments that require qualified therapists. We work a lot with Dr Vincent Wong, who is based on Harley St in London and he travels over to Ireland to perform treatments on my clients every couple of months. They love him! You would be amazed at the number of uninsured plasma pens out there, all without medical certification and hence the reason why insurance companies will not touch them. To the best of my knowledge, Jett Plasma is the only plasma pen on the market in Ireland that is insurable right now and its important to me that my clients always receive best practice and high standards in this growing area of non-surgical aesthetics. Where do you feel the growth is going to be in the Irish aesthetics and beauty industry? Demand for quick, non-surgical procedures, particularly laser therapies, injectables, non-invasive fat reduction, advanced skincare knowledge, all with minimal downtime is certainly on the up. Running my aesthetic clinic in Clane for over 10 years, I have seen a big growth from beauty to advanced technologies and it’s this knowledge that my clients are thriving on right now. What are the trends you are seeing in the industry today? I have seen a big surge in less invasive non-cosmetic treatments, which can be easier on the body, like highintensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a treatment that offers the medium-term benefits of a traditional facelift, without the fear of a scalpel or local anaesthetic. Fat freezing has become

58

Sabrina Crowe, Aphrodite Clinic in Clane, Co Kildare,

increasingly popular in Ireland in recent years. A non-invasive procedure using cryolipolysis which permanently eliminates stubborn fat deposits on the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks and double chin areas. Another popular trend right now, made famous by the Kardashians is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy: injections that promote collagen and elastin production, which help stem cells to rejuvenate, brighten and tighten the skin, while reducing wrinkles.

Treatment focus

What challenges do you see facing the aesthetics industry going forward in Ireland? The face of Ireland has changed so much over the last few years. The aesthetic industry is increasingly extending beyond what we put on our face and bodies to what we put into them, the aesthetic services industry is getting harder and harder to track. Part of the problem in Ireland is that there is no regulatory body overseeing aesthetic procedures. Yes, we have seen new training standards implemented from Government companies since May 2018, but then it all falls back on the insurance companies not giving cover to qualified therapists as the underwriters are mostly UK-based. This is causing a big problem in Ireland, due to Brexit and our working relationship with these companies post-Brexit. Due to many years of development, suppliers of equipment and consumables are associated with UK-based aesthetic providers and, as a result, have controlled the Irish marketplace. Now with Brexit all the grey areas are starting to come into effect – import duties, increase in costs and UK underwriter pulling out of Ireland. Our over reliance on the UK supply market has now led to uncharted waters in the industry as we now have to look to European suppliers and non-UK underwriters.

Our biggest challenge by far is going to be reinventing our industry to be Irish-based, which is going to be done by encouraging the mainland European-based companies to set up with Irish-based companies and set Irish companies up as market leaders, not followers. What is your advice to somebody starting off in the industry or thinking of going out on their own? Anyone who works in the beauty and aesthetic industry will tell you that it’s an inviting, inspiring place, full of empowering people, evolving ideas, and the occasional heated discussion about the merits of one holy grail beauty product or technology over the other. During my time in the industry, the biggest challenge I find to date is the industry does not stop growing, it is vital that you do not stop learning, never stop educating yourself. Last May I went back to college to certify in the highest level of QQI teacher training, I am consistently training and upskilling to meet the latest technologies that are appearing on the Irish market. My advice to anybody contemplating going out on your own is knowing that you are a team player before you make the jump. “You are only at your best when you can build a very strong team around you.”

INTRODUCING

COCOON MEDICAL Now available in Ireland, Cocoon Medical’s Elysion is leading the way in the laser hair removal market.

C

ocoon Medical was established over 10 years ago with a head office in Barcelona. In that time it has grown rapidly to become one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of aesthetic technology. Its strategy is based on developing innovative high quality devices at affordable prices. It offers systems for laser hair removal, fat freezing, skin rejuvenation and skin tightening. Its Primelase system is the world’s most powerful and fastest laser hair removal system allowing salons to treat full legs in just 10 minutes. This is revolutionising the laser hair removal market. For salons looking to enter this market, Cocoon’s Elysion is the market leader offering a high spec, high quality device at an affordable price. Cocoon supplies over 80pc of all laser franchises in Spain and sells in over 25 countries worldwide. Since its launch this year in Ireland it has proved to be a big success with lasers now in many counties around the country. Cocoon also supports customers with a comprehensive marketing launch programme to ensure their success. According to Cocoon Medical, the market for lasers is in some ways split between high end, very expensive devices and low end cheap, devices. It is therefore often prohibitively expensive or difficult to justify the investment with highly priced devices while trying to introduce advanced treatments into your beauty business or alternatlively you take a big risk on purchasing a cheap device that has no back up ,support or required training. With this in mind Cocoon has bridged the gap with high quality medical grade devices at affordable prices with professional marketing support and an amazing back up and after sales service which in the long run can provide a fast return on your investment and be a highly profitable addition to your beauty treatment business.

60

Why Elysion? Elysion is a high powered Diode laser device. The laser is selectively absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle to conduct heat to the base or root of the hair. In doing so it cuts of the blood flow and the hair dies. This action is known as photothermolysis. What makes Elysion different is that it has more power and delivers each pulse incredibly quickly to ensure better results. It also has a sophisticated integrated cooling system to ensure the treatment is pain free and comfortable for clients, a big improvement over older painful technology. It is also very fast pulsing at three pulses per second to minimise treatment time and maximise revenue per hour making it the most profitable laser in the market. Elysion is ideal for clinics and salons looking to introduce laser hair removal as it offers very good value with a high quality and specification device at a reasonable price. Elysion offers advantages over other lasers with better results on all skin types, pain free and super fast treatment. Cocoon also provide marketing support to help launch Elysion in clinics and salons to ensure commercial success. As business manager for Cocoon Medical in Ireland, Heidi McCann (pictured above) has over 20 years’ experience working in the aesthetic and cosmetic industry. Having previously run her own aesthetic clinic in Dublin, she was the first to introduce advanced treatments such as radio-frequency and LED light photo-rejevenation technology into Ireland. This gave her the experience to fully understand salon owners’ requirements in terms of business development, support and marketing, particularly in Ireland as customer demands and requirements can differ from those of the UK. Her extensive experience to date has given her the specialist skills required to successfully develop her new role with Cocoon Medical and she is now looking forward to meeting all her new clients. BACK TO HER

ROOTS Candela’s newly promoted senior regional manager for Ireland and Northern Ireland will ensure that, in her new role, customers will be supported within all departments of the company. Grace McCormack (pictured inset) has worked with Candela for over two years as a regional manager and is an experienced clinician, with a passion for the aesthetics industry. Grace has worked in the aesthetic/beauty industry for 16 years, during which time she has gained exceptional knowledge of all aspects of aesthetics, both as a clinician and from a business perspective. She has worked hands on with various cosmeceutical ranges, but her passion lies with light-based devices, in particular lasers. Originating from Ireland, she moved to Australia and there continued her education completing courses in advanced laser therapy and working as a clinic manager. Returning to her Irish roots three years ago, she took up a position as a clinical trainer for a skincare company before joining the team at Candela, now holding the position as a senior regional manager for Ireland and Northern Ireland. “I feel I am ideally placed to support new and established clinics, I have a lot of experience of working first hand in clinics, managing them from a business point of view and an appreciation of particular concerns that clinics have in Ireland, due to my local knowledge,” she says. “All this coupled with the backing of a global brand leader in aesthetic devices, means I feel confident when recommending the best device to suit a particular clinic’s requirements. But the support doesn’t end with the sale, this is just the start of the journey I have with my customers, as part of my role I ensure they are supported by the various departments within Candela to offer servicing, marketing and continued clinical education – their success is my success!” Perhaps best known in Ireland for the Gentle laser series of devices, Candela offers so much more. The company’s technology enables clinics to provide advanced solutions for a broad range of medical-aesthetic applications, including hair removal, wrinkle reduction, tattoo removal, women’s health treatments, facial resurfacing, traumatic and surgical scar treatments, body contouring, improvng the skin’s appearance through the treatment of benign vascular and pigmented lesions, and the treatment of acne, leg veins and cellulite. For more information visit our website at www.candelamedical.com/uk or contact Grace McCormack directly on email: gracem@candelamedical.com.

EMBROWDERY FROM

www.advancedaesthetics.ie

UP TO MY EYES How does emBrowdery online training work? The emBrowdery online course was developed on a LMS application. This brand new concept of teaching the technique is using a classroom system in a specially designed learning application. emBrowdery is now available to students from all over the world. The application is a tool that enables students to communicate with the Up To My Eyes Academy whenever they want during a 12-month period. The students send their works which are graded until they get a certificate. The application has 23 different levels and the student has to pass each level, step by step, in order to obtain the certificate. The application is supported by the academy’s official VTCT trainer and assessor. Elaine McParland represents the Up To My Eyes Training Academy and is proud to be an official VTCT assessor and trainer since 2015. The emBrowdery technique is a modern development suitable to European skin types, which guarantees best results in permanent make-up. Contrary to the conventional methods, she teaches, during her LMS application, other courses, among them microblading techniques, shading techniques for brows, lips and eyes. With this breaktaking application, you will be able to achieve breathtaking results.
