WHY WAXPERTS? We know waxing! It’s what we love and have specialised in for years. We have

combined all of our waxing knowledge and experiences, to deliver the best possible training courses.

We want our students to leave a Waxperts Academy course with

complete confidence in their products, techniques and most importantly

DEAR READERS his month’s issue of Salon Magazine features hair removal and non surgical salon aesthetics. From waxing to laser, skin peels to Tpermanent make-up techniques we bring you the products, tretment innovations and training available to your beauty business within this growing and lucrative professional market. As the seasons change and we head into the (hopefully!) sunnier summer months, these features offer you much needed information as salons are set to see an increase in demand for these services in the near future. Within these features we focus on ‘Aesthetics’, an industry that is at a curvature, according to Emma Ryall, the proprietor of Aesthetic Training Academy Ireland. Clients want to know more, therapists want to learn more and clinics want to offer more so it’s is a case of being ahead of the curve or being left behind. Speaking of sun, it’s nearly four years since the first wave of sunbed legislation came into force and three years since the second phase was introduced. The Health and Safety Executive recently announced figures confirming that sunbed operators have made exceptional improvements in complying with the wide-ranging legislation in place. There is still a way to go for some operators, but a 76pc improvement in compliance overwhelmingly indicates the industry is firmly moving in the right direction. You can read what The Sunbed Association says on page 49. Our resident ‘Skin Nerd’ Jennifer Rock examines the wisdom of combining traditional skincare treatments with newer advancements and technologies in order to embrace a more holistic and broader approach, while Ted Dwyer looks at the pros of automatic pension models. We also look highlight the importance of renewing your insurance policy on time, while Liz McKeon talks planning, budgets and cashflow. So it’s all this along with the usual line-up of industry and product news and more in this latest edition of Salon Magazine. Wishing you all a busy and profitable month ahead.

Spa Life International returns to Ireland in 2018 Spa Life International (Ireland) 2018 is set to take place on 18 and 19 June. The event is Europe's largest spa-dedicated one, exclusively for senior spa professionals. Supported by Fáilte Ireland and Meet in Ireland, it will be hosted at the recently refurbished Johnstown Estate Hotel & Spa. Spa Life International markets itself as much more than just a conference as it aims to provide spa professionals with an unparalleled combination of exposure to new product innovations; shared industry insights; extensive networking

opportunities; quality management education; greater convenience; and outstanding value for money in just two days. The programme of talented speakers will generously share their knowledge and experience with delegates to help them develop your businesses and brands. The line-up includes Dr Franz Linser, Fred Hoffman, Peigin Crowley and Michelle Hammond. To book a place at this event visit www.spa-life.ie.

MILA d’OPIZ CELEBRATES 80 YEARS OF INNOVATION 2018 marks the 80th birthday year of Swiss skincare brand Mila d’Opiz with the launch of a new 6-plant stem cell concentrate which rejuvenates and protects the skin at the earliest point of skin cell production, giving deep and long-lasting results. Mila d’Opiz is designed to be used in-salon, and retains a very loyal fanbase of customers who have been using the brand for decades due to its effectiveness and skin compatibility. The groundbreaking innovations that were a feature of the brand back in its early years have continued right into the present day, with several recent international innovation awards for their active ingredients and product formulations. Company founder Mila Opitz-Altherr launched the brand with a revolutionary hormonal face cream in 1938 because she was unable to find suitable products to treat her own difficult skin. Over the next few decades, the brand gradually evolved and developed into an international salon skincare brand with over 200 items sold in over 40 countries on every continent. In fact, Mila d’Opiz is one of the leading Swiss cosmetics companies, and develops and manufactures products for several

other brands. Mila would have been proud and pleased to know that the brand is still managed by her family and they retain tight control over standards and quality, by developing and manufacturing 95% of all products in-house at the brand’s headquarters in beautiful St Gallen, Switzerland. Mila d’Opiz is distributed in Ireland by Sunaura Distribution. www. sunaura.ie.

Business boost for Irish skincare brand

Jobs in the Irish hair and beauty sector up by 56pc

Award-winning Irish skincare brand Kinvara Skincare scoopsed six top awards at the UK Beauty Shortlist Awards 2018 and one award at the Rude Health Magazine Awards 2017. Kinvara Skincare’s 24hr Rosehip Face Serum was yet again a winner all round. It was awarded winner in the category of Best Daily Serum at the coveted seventh UK Beauty Shortlist Awards, while also being awarded Highly Commended Best Irish Product in the Rude Health Awards 2017. Founder of the Beauty Shortlist Fiona Klonarides said: “With a string of awards to its name, and now a new 2018 award winner, this deliciously hydrating, calming, lemony-scented, rosehip and sea buckthorn infused star of a serum ticks every box you could think of – a well-deserved '10'." Not only that, Kinvara Skincare also scooped four Editor’s Choice Awards for the Eye Wow Eye Serum, Elemental Exfoliating Powder, Omega Rich Hand and Nail Cream, Hyaluronic Youth Boost. The Absolute Cleansing Oil was also awarded finalist in the Best Cleansing Oil category, bringing Kinvara’s awards total to six from the UK Beauty Shortlist Awards 2018. The Irish natural skincare brand beat off stiff competition from brands all over the world. It’s a testament to the exceptional standard of Kinvara Skincare natural products that over the course of six years, they have won multiple awards. Kinvara has grown its skincare line in the past number of month and proudly showcases seven signature products. The latest product releases include the eagerly anticipated Elemental Exfoliating Powder, Omega Rich Hand and Nail Cream and Hyaluronic Youth Boost, which all received rave reviews since launching in 2017.

Jobs in the hair and beauty sector grew by 56pc in 2017 compared to same period the previous year, according to Jobs. ie data. It was found that facials, massages and pedicures are no longer the exclusive realm of Irish women as Irish men are increasingly driving growth in the nation’s hair and beauty sector. Jobs.ie noted that this increased interest is having real effects on the economy: the number of jobs in Ireland’s hair and beauty sector increased by 56pc in 2017 compared to 2016, and by 105pc compared to the same period in 2012. Broken down by category, jobs for haircare professionals – including hairdressers, barbers, stylists, and brow and lash technicians – were steady, increasingly slightly by 2pc on 2016, but by 84pc on 2012. Jobs in the skincare profession – including skincare therapists and nail technicians – increased by 6pc on 2016 and by 117pc on 2012. The number of jobs for beauticians, make-up artists and spa therapists increased significantly by 186pc, and by 114pc on 2012. “The male grooming industry is booming, and it’s not just down to moisturisers and razor blades. More men are opting for full-on beauty treatments, like hair removal, facials, and manicures,” said Christopher Paye, general manager at Jobs.ie.

Formulator and creator Dr Joanne Reilly is thrilled with the recent awards. “We didn’t think we’d surpass our trawl of awards won in 2017 but 2018 is off to a great start," she said. "It's testament to our relentless focus on product innovation, quality and customer experience. I’m delighted for the team here who are 100pc committed to our mission to make a difference in peoples’ lives by making a difference to their skin.” “This is allowing existing hair and beauty salons to expand their product and service offerings. It’s also creating new business opportunities for start-ups dedicated to serving this energetic and growing market."

American Crew announces UK and Ireland All-Star Challenge country winners! ™

American Crew, the leader in professional men’s grooming, is delighted to announce the country winners for the annual All-Star Challenge men’s grooming competition. The All-Star Challenge is an annual global competition that highlights world-class talent in men’s grooming. Men’s stylists and barbers are challenged to combine their expertise in art, style and technique to deliver their ultimate interpretation of the American Crew man. The hotly contested final was held at The Bike Shed Motor Cycle Club on Monday, 12 March in Shoreditch and the guest list read like a who’s who of men’s barbering and grooming. The atmosphere was electric as the finalists picked from hundreds of entries gathered on stage for their moment in the spotlight. Surrounded by barbers, hairdressers and industry influencers, American Crew celebrated all of the UK & Ireland finalists and announced both country winners:

SAM WALL – HIDDEN HEIGHTS CREATIVE STUDIO – UK WINNER Sam Wall said: “ This is my fourth year entering the competition and I have been committed to American Crew for the last seven years. I made the final last year and it really hurt not to win but I took feedback on board learnt from my experiences and everything in to this year’s entry. I couldn’t be prouder to be the UK winner. American Crew All-Star Challenge is the men’s competition to win.” www.salonmagazine.ie

CHRIS O’RIORDAN – ST4MEN (SEAN TAAFFE GROUP) – IRELAND WINNER Chris O’Riordan said: ”I wasn’t expecting to win at all, to get this recognition from my fellow professionals is amazing. It’s my first time entering , I saw Ciaran O’Sullivan winning for Ireland last year and it inspired me. I am really interested in the photographic element of this competition and my look is an old time masculine look interpreting what American Crew is for the modern man.“ These two country winners now go on to the next round of selection where the 15 best images from across the globe are chosen to compete in the Global All-Star Final held in Barcelona in June.

B ROWED OVER! p To My Eyes, a fab little salon U in Greystones, has been changing

the face of beauty since it was first established by owner Elaine McParland in 2009. It was the first dedicated lash salon in the country where Elaine brought all her knowledge from her Sydney-based training (which she decided to do whilst on holiday there) to provide wonderful natural, soft, curly and comfortable lashes to the women of Ireland. It wasn’t long before VIPs such as Georgia Salpa, Rosanna Davison, Roz Purcell, Pippa O’Connor, to name but a few, were flocking to her door to get lashed by Elaine. Then in 2012, to the delight of all the ladies who badly needed a brow doctor, Elaine introduced ‘emBrowdery’ to the Irish market. This wonderful technique of tattooing light, natural looking hair strokes to the brow bone took off from the get go and Elaine and her team

have transformed the brows of over 7,000 ladies (and men) here since. Unlike other methods of semi-permanent make-up, emBrowdery does not break or tear the skin so strokes remain thin, realistic and in situ, despite the passing of time. Elaine and her team treat cancer patients across the length and breadth of Ireland. VIPs also flock to the doors of Up To My Eyes for the emBrowdery treatment – Majella O’Donnell (Daniel’s wife) was filmed on RTE’s Nationwide getting her brows recreated here. Reviews on emBrowdery prove that Elaine’s technique, based on eyebrow cloning in Asia, is superior to other methods currently available in Ireland. Elaine was also nominated in 2015 and 2016 as best brow artist in the country. Contact Elaine on 087 236 3101.

SUGARING THE NEW SMOOTH

Alexandria Professional® Body Sugaring Products Smooth, beautiful skin, without the discomforts of other epilation techniques.

Pamela Kennedy, director of International Beauty Business and the official Irish and UK distributor/educator of Alexandria Professional® Body Sugaring gives us an insight into the world of professional sugaring.

What are the advantages for clients? The most important advantage to the clients is very fundamental: the Alexandria technique and sugar paste formulation extracts the hair in its natural direction of growth while the hair is still in the early growth stage. This eliminates hair breakage, unnecessary discomfort, irritation and ingrown hairs while exfoliating dry skin cells. Can sugaring lead to permanent hair reduction? Yes, when you combine it with our full circle of skin programme this will lead to improved skin colour texture and clarity as well as hair reduction . Sugar paste penetrates the follicle to remove the hair from the root therefore discouraging hair growth. The re-growth takes longer to re-appear and is considerably finer. Is it cost effective for salons? Alexandria professional will add 50% to your salon menu when your clients follow our full circle of skin programme and will increase the salon sanitation

by 100pc. One of the greatest financial benefits to sugaring is that you use the same sugar paste you take from the jar to begin thetreatment of an area and you continue to treat the entire body with that paste without risk of cross-contamination. There are other sugaring companies so why did you decide to go with Alexandria Professional®? Alexandria Professional® is very proud to be the pioneers of professional body sugaring hair removal within the beauty industry worldwide! It was founded 26 years ago after Lena Kennedy saw a huge gap in the market for client’s wanting more from their beauty salons

“IT’S NOT ABOUT THE COLOUR OF YOUR SKIN, IT’S ABOUT THE CONDITION OF IT...” LENA KENNEDY, PRESIDENT/CEO OF ALEXANDRIA PROFESSIONAL®

than painful hair removal visits every few weeks. They wanted a pure, clean experience with little to no reaction or irritation to their skin. She came up with a range of products that are all natural, chemical free and vegan friendly. How can you train to become an Alexandria Professional? In order to use our high quality

products you must attend a two day course and be assessed six to eight weeks later. Alexandria professional is now four years in the Irish market, growing steadily with our professional sugar. We offer basic sugaring courses to advanced Master courses with ongoing support in technique, sales and marketing.

What can we expect from an Alexandria Professional course? Once you become involved, you are committing to an entirely new skill-based method. Also included in the certification process is the use of our logos and brand marks to help bring customers to you, superior quality products to support your services pre and post sugaring and all marketing materials to help grow your sugaring empire. We run our courses in the north and south of Ireland every month. Contact us now to begin your sugaring journey.

You can contact our head office in Lisburn on 0044 (0) 28 92661617 or email www.salonmagazine.ie Internationalbeautybusiness@gmail.com to start your Alexandria Professional® Sugaring journey.

ALL ABOUT AESTHETICS

NON SURGICAL SALON AESTHETICS 2018

With more treatments than ever on the market, we showcase some products and treatments to offer your clients in addition to training and retail opportunities for your professional beauty business.

AFA Peels

BEAUTY FROM WITHIN

Eden Beauty Group would like to introduce you to AFA Peels, a unique skincare range now available in Ireland. As a salon owner you are always on the lookout for innovative and commercially strong products and treatments that work.

Collagen Lift™ Paris is a daily drinkable collagen supplement that is easily absorbed by the body and has been clinically proven in trials in Germany and France to increase collagen densities, reduce wrinkles by up to 50pc and increase skin elasticity and hydration.

AFA Gels have been clinically tested for three years by certified dermatologists and have been found to be rapidly effective in reducing the appearance of visible lines while improving the tone and texture of the skin. They are also fantastic for reducing pigmentation, acne scars and sun damage. Eden has tested the AFA range for 15 years in our own salon and with fellow salon owners we are utterly convinced of its potential. The range include salon peels and homecare gels, cleansers and masks. Eden is the exclusive distributor in Ireland and onsite training is available. Visit www.edenbeautygroup.com/distribution.ie

Collagen Lift™ Paris is further enhanced with Mediterranean seaweed extract and vitamin C making it a powerful source of anti-ageing collagen, minerals and antioxidants. Collagen is a critical component of skin providing structure and elasticity to keep skin looking plump and youthful. With age, collagen breaks down and over time the body’s capacity to re-generate collagen reduces - a double whammy for ageing skin! Collagen Lift™ Paris provides healthy and younger looking skin by working from the inside out. It actively improves the appearance and long-term health of the skin. Collagen Lift™ Paris comes in a user-friendly ampoule to be taken in the morning diluted in water or juice, packaged in a one-month supply. For more information on Collagen Lift™ Paris, contact: 4Beauty Group, t: 44 (0) 28 90 449 744, e: info@4beautygroup.com

Up To My Eyes, a beauty salon tucked away in the heart of Greystones, Co Wicklow, opened its doors in 2010 and has grown tremendously to become one of the most sought after salons in Ireland. The salon specialised in eyelash extensions and HD Brows until founder Elaine McParland introduced the semi-permanent brow make-up technique called ‘emBrowdery’ into Ireland in 2013. The team of therapists has treated over 10,000 clients nationwide to date.

Treatments begins by consultation to ensure the client is suitable for microneedling, the consultation also helps to manage the clients expectations. Cleansing of the skin is essential to remove any makeup or bacteria before going ahead with the needling. The needling procedure takes approximately 25 minutes and is not classified as painful as it is not penetrating into the nerves of the skin. After each area of the face is needled, the skin with feel quite hot and

tight due to the stimulation of the blood flow in the skin which is completely normal. To complete the treatment, a soothing mask is applied to increase hydration. This treatment is highly effective for those with aging skin, acne scarring, dehydrated skin, scarring and pigmentation. BEFORE AND AFTER

Microneedling Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy for the skin. The technique uses microscopic needles to cause multiple micro punctures to the skin. This in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. In addition, the treatment serum (a cocktail of vitamins, minerals and hyaluronic acid) are placed under the skin whereby they immediately hydrate the skin.

PERMANENT MAKE-UP TECHNIQUES

by Aleksandra Pawlak-Gudej

NON SURGICAL SALON AESTHETICS 2018

I am the owner of the Butterfly Effect Beauty salon in Rathfarnham Dublin. Having trained for many years, I hold an ITEC beauty trainer certificate. I write for many leading industry journals in Ireland and across Europe as I specialise in permanent make-up and I use the microblading method. Manual techniques Manual techniques are performed without the use of an electric permanent make-up device. Some industry collegues do not recognise microblading as a permanent make-up treatment but instead label it under a different treatment group entirely. In my opinion, all cosmetic tattoos fall under the heading of permanent make-up. I would divide the treatments into the following two categories, manual techniques and machine techniques. Manual techniques include: permanent eyebrow make-up microblading method, manual shading, as well as combo, eyeliner and manual pigmentation of the mouth. 1. The microblading method This allows the client to achieve a very natural drawing of hair with a thick base and thin end. The procedure is performed quickly, in a manner comfortable for the client. The treatment lasts for about 12-18 months. This technique is ideal for clients who want to thicken and highlight the natural eyebrow. For hair drawing we use acupunctural needles combined into the so-called ‘blade’. These needles have various thickness and flexibility. They can be arranged diagonally or can be u-shaped. The number of needles needed to create a blade depends on the length of the hair which we want to tattoo. The width of the hair is determined by the thickness of the needle used. Flexibility is selected depending on the client’s skin condition. A decision on the blade shape (u-shaped or diagonal) depends

www.salonmagazine.ie

on the therapist’s preferences and individual working technique. 2. Manual shading method Allows the client to obtain the effect of a gentle shadow on the eyebrow. It is a perfect option for clients who like to highlight their eyebrows with make-up as it imitates a powder/shadow effect on the eyebrow. The lower eyebrow line is pigmented more intensively,

while on the upper eyebrow line we obtain a scattering effect. For such a procedure, special shading needles are used. They are available in various configurations and are arranged in groups or lines. Needles are inserted at a right angle. Thanks to this, skin injury is minimal, which speeds up the healing

process. Pigmentation is shallow, but multi-layered. The effect last for about 12 months. 3. Combo method Allows a combination of the two previous techniques (1 and 2). The client has a tattooed imitation of the brow hair using the microblading method as well as a shadow effect using the manual shading method. This is a perfect option for your clients who have a minimum amount of natural hair. The eyebrow is highlighted, and thanks to the imitation of brow hair it has a 3D effect. Spaces between the tattooed hair are dimmed. This gives the optical effect of filling of the eyebrows. The make-up performed using the combined method lasts for about 12-18 months. Manual techniques are also used in pigmentation of the eyelid line and lips. They do not require buying expensive micropigmentation equipment. However, it is recommended to use pigments for manual techniques. Pigments of such type are thick, which facilitates the work with the use of a pen. Procedures are very comfortable for the clients, because they do not feel any vibrations and do not hear the sound of a working permanent make-up device . I recommend manual techniques to beauticians who have just begun their adventure with permanent make-up. FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TRAINING DATES CALL: 089 4751746

AESTHETICALLY PLEASING

Emma Ryall Proprietor of ATAI

NON SURGICAL SALON AESTHETICS 2018

With the facial aesthetics industry growing, it’s a case of being ahead of the curve, writes Emma Ryall. Aesthetics, it has quickly become the buzz word in the beauty sector. While surgical procedures are in decline, non-surgical procedures are growing year-on-year. It is estimated by 2020 that the facial aesthetics industry will be worth some €4.4bn worldwide. Markets and Markets is a leading provider of industry analysis; it forecast facial aesthetics is set to grow at 9.2pc each year all the way through to 2020. Clients are opting for minimally invasive and non-invasive treatment; in part that is also due to the PIP breast implant scandal. With the media highlighting what can and does go wrong with surgical procedures combined with an ageing population and advancements in technology has intensified, consumers want for alternatives to surgery. Another outcome of the PIP scandal was the industry coming under scrutiny. While this situation related to the UK, we are not insulated by any means. With the majority of the sectors awarding bodies in the UK, this means Ireland is directly impacted. Worldwide it has been known for some time that the beauty sector needed to evolve into a more evidence-based treatment pathway with higher standard formal qualifications. ITEC and CIBTAC have both moved to redevelop their courses to meet guidelines outlined by Health Education

www.salonmagazine.ie

England (HEE). There is also the just launched Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) in partnership with the Cosmetic Standards Practice Authority (CPSA). It is all a very positive progress towards better outcomes for the general public while implementing standards for evidence-based practice and training. The JCCP is a voluntary regulatory body and register where the general public can search for compliant training providers and practitioners. While it is currently only in the UK, there is talk of it being expanded to include Ireland and beyond. Regardless, it will not be long until more registers come into play. No matter where you sit within the industry, therapist, clinic owner or education provider the industry is evolving, it is inevitable that these changes will impact your career or business at some stage. As I like to say, the industry is at a curvature, ‘clients want to know more, therapists want to learn more and clinics want to offer more’. It is a case of being ahead of the curve or being left behind. Emma Ryall is the proprietor of Aesthetic Training Academy Ireland (ATAI) www.atai.ie and Zest Skin Clinic www.zest.ie located in Swords. Phone 01 524 1511 (ATAI) and 01 890 2441 (Zest).

From a salon point of view, the company is also willing to finance the machine for you, which means that you don't have to go to the bank at all.

Want to join the Semi Permanent Brow Revolution but FEAR is holding you back? Fear of creating the wrong shape? Fear of cutting the client’s skin? Fear of making mistakes and dealing with an angry client? Read on and you’ll fear no more….

HAIR REMOVAL 2018

The Beauty World has been rocked over the last few years with the demand for Beautiful Brows. Some like them big and dark, some like them skinny and light, WE like them looking right for our CLIENT. With emBrowdery, the emphasis is on creating the RIGHT brow shape for the individual face shape, skin tone and personality.

emBrowdery also allows THE CLIENT to be in control. The first treatment does not make the brow semi-permanent. The client has four weeks to gather feedback from their loved ones on how their new BROW shape suits them and then they decide whether they want to proceed. YOU take any changes they want to make into account, and “voila” you are on the road to creating the perfect brows. You can do all this WITHOUT pain. We do NOT blade DOWN into the skin, rather we pluck UP tiny insertions into the skin, similar to the minute holes created in the skin when plucking out unwanted brow hair. We all know that this does not create scarring in the skin. All the client

feels is a sensation similar to hair being plucked, slightly uncomfortable but definitely not painful. There will be no scabbing, no sloughing and no unsightly looking brows. The brows will look significantly lighter as we are now seeing the same quantity of pigment THROUGH the layers of the skin. We gradually build up the pigment over the full three treatments and the end result is perfect looking brows for YOUR CLIENT’s face shape. Up To My Eyes salon in Greystones has done this treatment 8,000 times over the last four years. We dedicate our days to the constant challenge of getting the RIGHT brow shape for our clients. We are fully qualified to carry out the treatment and fully qualified to teach you how to do this treatment. We are the perfect one stop shop to train you in this amazing art. NAI LS FIT FO R N U PTIALS It may be the most important manicure of your client’s life, so at Sweet Squared we understand just how important it is to make her nail dreams come true! CND™ education ambassador Kate Sawley shares her expertise on bridal style, aftercare and going the extra mile for your bride on her big day. It may be the most important manicure of your client’s life, so at Sweet Squared we understand just how important it is to make her nail dreams come true! CND™ education ambassador Kate Sawley shares her expertise on bridal style, aftercare and going the extra mile for your bride on her big day.

What products/nail designs suit each type of bride?

In my experience, brides usually opt for a variation of French manicure, for example 2017 saw the ‘Baby Boomer’ style over take traditional French which many brides chose for their big day. Bridal nails for me are usually CND™ Liquid & Powder enhancements for a polished yet natural look. I find that often, brides would love a natural nail manicure with CND Shellac, but they can’t always commit to a regular schedule leading up to the wedding.

When should brides start their nail regime?

I would always recommend that brides begin a regular manicure regime four weeks before their wedding. This helps ensure that the natural nails and surrounding skin are in the best possible condition, but not everyone is able to commit to this at such a busy time!

How can you upsell, ie hen parties, groom's nails?

Many brides like to have their hen party nails done as a ‘trial’ – much like hair and make-up – so that they can ensure you’re the right fit for their nail needs! I always offer a small voucher at their trial to redeem against their bridal appointment if they choose to stick with me! If you have the time and resource, there’s the opportunity to suggest you also do the bridesmaid’s manicures for the wedding, or have part of the hen party itself as a manicure party to drum up business. This also a great time to upsell to any other treatments you can provide, such as lashes or spray tans!

How can you determine what's best for the bride and her needs for the day and beyond?

I always ensure that I carry out a thorough consultation for any bridal nails, after all for lots of ladies this is one of the most important days of their lives – they want to look perfect! Once we’re on the same page, I can recommend the right products and services to bring their nail dreams to life. I also like to give the bride a congratulations card containing a small voucher to use towards maintaining their nails after the wedding, this always goes down a treat and could result in a loyal client following a one-off treatment. Full aftercare advice and a mini bottle of CND™ SolarOil™ is also a great addition to keep nails looking picture perfect when they say ‘I do’ and beyond!

THERE’S NO SCHOOL LIKE THE OLD SCHOOL by Jennifer Rock

ithin the past few years, words such as ‘results’, ‘express W treatments’ and ‘targeted’ are the words of choice in our

industry. All of these words point to the fact that the average client typically demands rapid treatments with immediate and measurable differences. It’s a craze that has to be admired within our sector. Buzzwords, techniques, products, new ingredients and protocols that weren’t around a year before can become set in stone overnight. It’s fast-paced but this speed ensures that we don’t remain stagnant in our therapies, unless we foolishly choose to. We are constantly advancing, re-training, evolving and remodelling ourselves to keep in line with the latest trends and technologies. Opting to remain ‘old school’ is not always the best foot forward for any successful business in the trend-reliant world of aesthetics. However, there is a difference between remaining stationary and neglecting the more traditional, well-established core methods within skincare. As humans, we become easily distracted by new, innovative approaches, but it is the long-standing concepts that have stood the test of time that lead to newer skincare developments and ultimately should be the nucleus of skin philosophy. I often overhear many therapists disrespect the original professional product lines and relaxation massage ‘hands-on’ facials. Many will often openly peer down their nose in dismay at the notion that not all clients will opt to receive acids, peels, lasers, currents and so forth. These clients are looking for peace and tranquillity, time to breathe, an experience where they stay on the plinth the whole time without hopping up and hopping back down and want the physical touch and therapeutic benefits of a skin treatment. The reality is that both demographics exist whether therapists want them to or not. Both results-driven clients and relaxation-driven clients have their own unique selling point and each deserve the www.salonmagazine.ie

time and focus of salon owners. In a time when clinics are more widespread, don’t alienate those clients who wish for the ‘tried and tested’ holistic or celebrated ranges and treat them to the comprehensive experience regardless of what their end goal is. Stress is the No 1 free radical we all tend to be exposed to on a daily basis. How does a peel address that issue? It could provide antioxidant protection but a homeostasis approach of contact and simple client care could make an impact instantly. From a skin perspective, stress triggers many inflammatory, bacterial free radical concerns so from a nerdy perspective, manual massage in classical skincare unquestionably carries its weight in gold. The lymphatic, circulatory and nervous systems will thank you. Muscle tone, facial fatigue, toxin release, drainage and sinus issues can be alleviated, all while inducing endorphins to boost morale, confidence and self-worth. The numbers of cosmeceutical clinics are increasingly daily. Dryness, skin shedding, erythema and irritation are temporary contraindications that occur from more advanced treatments. While many clients are content to plough through, there is a lot to be said for a product range that has a main goal of not necessarily repairing DNA but of comforting, nourishing and hydrating the skin to restore its ceramide levels and the skin’s protective layer. This type of treatment could instantly pacify a reactive skin as well as cross promote other treatments, reintroducing the power of aroma in a product and increasing retail sales. Instead of embracing the new wholeheartedly and without question and throwing the old and more traditional of the industry aside, perhaps we would be wiser to refresh our knowledge and love of the modalities and ingredients of times passed and intertwine them with newer technologies. The result would be a more holistic, broader and better informed approach to the skin.

M I N D YOU R MO N EY PLAN N I NG, BU DGETS AN D CASH FLOW

Liz McKeon offers her tips for a successful, profitable salon business. It is important to know how to manage a beauty salon business and how to make money in beauty business. Your money will work for you and your business will have enough, more than enough when you give it energy, time and understanding. You need to know about your business financially, it is your responsibility. Have enough money from the start Owning and operating your own beauty salon can be incredibly rewarding. It’s certainly a lot more enjoyable if you can reduce your stress levels by having good financial planning and a realistic approach to how much money it will take to get you to where you want to be. Ensuring that you have enough money to start or buy a business is essential. While you are getting established and building your client base, you will still need to pay for all your fixed expenses, so adequate start-up capital is vital to the survival of your salon. Welcome to reality – budgets and planning! A common mistake in business is poor planning and unrealistic expectations in terms of income and expenses. From my experience, the three most common errors are underestimating costs, overestimating how much money will come in, and failing to recognise that money will be slower coming in than expected. Obviously the end result of these errors is a serious lack of cash, (or a cash flow problem). Take a realistic approach to salon budgeting. Don’t plan for the best possible scenario, plan for the worst. If everything turns out better than expected, you will just end up with more money in the bank!

Cashflow Income isn’t guaranteed until it is in the bank. Cashflow problems can destroy a business quicker than anything else. When planning for cashflow, always be conservative, allow for slow days and the odd bad debt and have a back-up plan just in case cash flow becomes tight. Your business needs to be able to afford to grow and you need to manage that growth. Give value for money and charge what you are worth. Determine what to charge based on your costs, your desired profits, the competition and your unique beauty salon features. Setting tight, conservative budgets is a trademark of successful hair and beauty salons and it will certainly make running your business easier. If you find it hard to manage your finances, get advice from someone impartial, such as an accountant.

For information about upcoming workshops and one-to-one mentoring, check out www.lizmckeon.com or call Liz on (01) 892 8007.

JOB WELL DONE BUT STILL ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently announced figures confirming that sunbed operators have made exceptional improvements in complying with the wide-ranging legislation in place. Unbelievably it’s nearly four years since the first wave of legislation came into force and three years since the second phase was introduced. Ireland has without doubt the most onerous legislation in Europe assigned to provision of a commercial sunbed service, so it’s perhaps no surprise it took operators a while to ensure they were fully compliant. The HSE statistics suggest there is still a way to go for some operators but a whopping 76pc improvement in compliance overwhelmingly indicates the industry is firmly moving in the right direction and that is very good news indeed!

Compliance with legislation is clearly not an option and the interesting point to note is that where salons are fully compliant, business appears to be booming. Responsible and compliant operators instil confidence in their staff and their customers, which ultimately leads to a more profitable business. A confident member of staff will know how to ensure the best possible experience for the salon customer and that will encourage repeat visits, increased lotions, and accessories sales and new business footfall through word of mouth.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RENEWING YOUR INSURANCE POLICY ON TIME

RENEW YOUR INSURANCE POLICY

The reason you take out liability insurance is to protect

yourself when things go wrong. If you renew your policy on time, then your cover is continuous. In other words, the new policy starts the moment the old one ends so there is no gap in cover. Have you thought about the consequences of not renewing your policy on time? It could mean that there is a period of time where the old policy has finished, yet there is not a new policy in place so you are trading without insurance. You may think it is not important if you have let your policy lapse, but have you thought about what happens if you cause an injury to your client during the time that you have no insurance in force? Sometimes even a simple disagreement can turn into a large claim if not handled correctly. An insurance company has extensive knowledge and access to solicitors who are well experienced in these types of claims to defend you, your reputation and your livelihood if an insurable incident has occurred.

www.salonmagazine.ie

Even if an injury is not immediately apparent, a customer has two years in which they can make a claim against you. Consider the possibility of receiving a claim from one of your clients in a year’s time and realising that, as you didn’t renew your policy on time, the claim was for a treatment that you provided your client when you had no cover in place. With no insurance policy in force, who will deal with your client’s claim? Have you got the experience, knowledge and money to do this? If the answer is no, then this is why you need to have insurance. DON’T GET YOURSELF IN BOTHER – REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR COVER

PENSION PLOTTING – THE TIME IS NOW Automatic pension models are on the way to Ireland, writes Ted Dwyer. or many people, the decision to start saving for retire Fment is often one that is put on the back burner. As a result, the world at large has decided that the only way to get young people (or in fact, most people) to start saving into a pension plan, is to automatically put them into a company pension plan the day they start work. So, employers and employees, take note. In the next three years in Ireland it is likely that every employee is going to be automatically put into a company pension plan and a percentage of their salary (initially probably 1pc or 2pc) will be invested on their behalf into their individual plans. This payment will also be matched by their employer. This is now the law in the UK and has also been in operation in Australia since 1982. Currently in Australia, the total contribution being invested each year into each employee’s pension plan is 12pc of salary, funded by the employer and employee. The biggest problem they have in Australia is keeping track of each employee’s individual pension values. This will be a challenge in Ireland also as the average length of employment is close to six years. This means that anyone who starts work at the age of 20 could have six or seven different jobs during their working life. If you are one of those people who are happy that the state pension might still be around when you get to age 66 or 68 or 70, or whenever it will be paid (if at all) and you don’t want the income cushion of having your own pension fund then yes,

you will be able to opt out and no longer be part of this new automatic pension model. Will it be a good thing or not? This will probably be the most positive thing that will ever happen to people in employment in Ireland because right now in this country only 40pc of employees have any pension plan in place. Yes, it will cost them some money each month but the reality is that, with the tax reliefs allowed currently on pensions, individuals will at least be paying a large amount of the money each month to themselves rather than paying it to the tax man. Employers and the self-employed will probably not be included in the new auto-enrolment system so they will have to fend for themselves and make their own arrangements. If you are currently thinking of starting a pension plan for yourself or your employees, then it might make sense to put your own arrangements in place before auto-enrolment happens, so that you can make your own decisions as to what you want to do and what suits you and your employees. Contact a financial advisor close to where you work or send me an email on ted@citylife.ie and I will help you if I can. Ted Dwyer is founding director of City Life (www.citylife.ie).

closely with brands such as Image and McCosmetics allowing us to offer the training with superior results driven brands. Check out the website for all course details and read our testimonials from our graduates. Lyndsey Doyle “I attended the Advanced Aesthetics Academy, Advanced Electrolysis course. I had a great experience and received excellent training to the highest standard. I chose Advanced Aesthetics Academy because of Nicola’s amazing knowledge, professionalism and passion for the industry. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to specialise in this area.” For further information and course dates please log on to www.advancedaesthetics.ie or call the Academy on 051 365936
