EMINENCE MIXOLOGY EVENT TAKES PLACE IN DUBLIN
Eminence Organic Skin Care held its Mixology event in Dublin’s Iveagh Garden Hotel recently, where attendees met Eminence’s CEO Boldijarre Koronczay. The Hollywood facialist gave an informative presentation on the attributes of Eminence, which is a phytoceutical brand, meaning organic but with cosmeceutical results. The brand also plants a tree for every product it sells, with 12 million trees planted to date. “It was amazing to have Boldijarre in Ireland to increase awareness of everything Eminence has been doing in environmental terms way before other brands have as well as its incredible results,” said Irish Eminence distributor Rasa Levinaite. “Spas and salons in Ireland are realising they can opt for a phytoceutical option that gives the same, if not better, results than cosmeceuticals, which relax their clientele and leaves them with glowing and radiant skin for weeks after.”
BUSINESS NEWS
The new Lilikoi Mineral Defense Collection was also announced at the launch – it protects against blue light, has no white cast (white residue) and is reef safe. Eminence Mixology means that spa therapists can use multiple masking products and layers, along with Hungarian massage techniques to create incredible cosmeceutical results, without any possible side effects. Products can be used at home to recreate the effects of an Eminence facial and prolong the results of radiance promoting peels, which are a speciality of Eminence.
ECONOMY PERFORMING WELL: SME MARKET MONITOR
The domestic economy is performing strongly despite a dip in consumer sentiment, according to the latest SME Market Monitor from the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland. The monitor tracks trends across 15 different indicators that are important for the performance of the SME sector. The BPFI said that businesses here have been boosted by improving employment, as well as a 2.1pc rise in retail sales during April, despite consumer sentiment falling in the first five months of the year as fears around Brexit weigh on the public. The first quarter of the year also saw significant improvement in labour market indicators. Annual employment growth accelerated to 3.7pc in the first three months of the year, the largest increase since the third quarter of 2007, while unemployment fell to of 4.6pc in April. The monitor also noted that Brexit preparations boosted activity across the manufacturing sector, but the sector

continues to lose momentum. Consumer sentiment decreased from 98.8 in January to 89.9 in May. “For many, Brexit remains firmly in the background , despite the positive economic news at home. Until such a time as there is a clear outcome for Brexit, this ambiguity is likely to continue to weigh on consumer and business sentiment,” said Annette Hughes, director of EY-DKM Economic Advisory, which prepared the report. While Brexit brings potentially severe implications for consumers and businesses here alike and is weighing on sentiment, current indicators point to a more positive story in the domestic economy, she continued. “The labour market continues to outperform expectations - driving strong growth in consumer spending, a key indicator for SMEs.”

The Style Bar in Portlaoise is BRIEFS owned by David Finn, who put a post up on Facebook after he walked into the salon earlier this year to find three out of five women on the sofa wearing their nightwear. He said he has received a hugely positive response to the post, which pointed out that the salon was a place of business. “Look, obviously there are other people out there that think a different way than I do,” he said. “But just from my point of view I think its very unhygienic. It doesn’t look well either for the salon”, he added.

Irish cosmetic chain Sisu has opened its first clinic in the North, with the new premises located on Ann St in Belfast. Co-founded by tech entrepreneur Pat Phelan, along with brothers Brian and James Cotter, Sisu specialises in non-surgical injectable treatments such as Botox, lip and dermal fillers. The company has ambitions to become the top global brand in aesthetics and has invested £250,000 in its new Belfast premises. “Belfast is No 1 in Google Trends in Europe for lip fillers, dermal fillers and Botox,” said Phelan. “Statistically it's the No 1 per capita in Europe, which is very surprising for us. Interestingly the Republic is up there, but nothing like Belfast.” A Co Limerick hair salon owner has been ordered to pay €20,000 compensation in a pregnancy discrimination case. In the case before the Labour Court, the court has ordered the Limerick based salon to pay a former employee €20,000 after finding that the defendent treated the plaintiff in a discriminatory manner because she was pregnant. It was alleged that the defendent said to the plaintiff “I know – your arse is fatter” after being told by the plaintiff that she was pregnant. The award more than triples the €6,000 award made to the plaintiff by a Workplace Relations Commission adjudication officer and that decision was appealed by the salon in question and the scale of the award was appealed by the plaintiff. In the court case, the defendent denied that they made the remark. Aesthetic clinics chain Thérapie Clinic has announced a £50m investment in the UK over the next three years, predicting 1,500 new jobs. Thérapie already has 31 clinics across the UK and Ireland and has recently opened four new clinics in London. “At a time of national instability, we feel incredibly grateful to be planning our 100 store roll out plan and to be bringing the world’s most advanced laser hair removal and skin treatments to a whole host of new customers across the UK and Ireland,” said managing director of Thérapie, Katie McGlade.

ISME URGES GOVERNMENT TO BE CAUTIOUS AHEAD OF BUDGET
The Irish SME Association (Isme) has called on Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe to take precautionary measures against more difficult times ahead in Budget 2020. In a pre-Budget submission, the organisation said that the country must start paying off its national debt and control public spending. It said this will require difficult conversations between the executive and the public service, but these are no longer avoidable. Ahead of Brexit and a weakened

The State must stop outsourcing increases in the cost of living to employers via the National Minimum Wage, and instead must commit to a radical programme of reducing costs of living in Ireland.”

FIVE-STAR SALON With over three decades’ experience in the industry, Liz Murphy Howard (pictured inset) has branched out into the organic market with her new salon in Dublin’s Malahide.
A
new fully organic hair and beauty salon has opened in Malahide, Co Dublin in a renovated period house. Located on James Terrace, No.5 Natural Organic is the brainchild of Liz Murphy Howard, who also owns another Malahide salon called My Hair and has 31 years’ experience in the industry. “I started my career at the age of 15 knowing school wasn’t for me!” she says. “I did an apprenticeship at a local salon in Castleknock. Hairdressing was all I wanted to do, I had a strong passion for it. After three years, l knew a hairdressing business was for me and l would own my own salon some day – I’m extremely ambitious. I got the opportunity 15 years ago to open my first salon My Hair, which has grown from strength to strength after a lot of hard work and commitment.” After a decade in the business, Liz had seen a real need from her own clients who were going through chemotherapy or living with alopecia, thinning hair etc. “I felt this area of expertise was needed in north Co Dublin, so after a lot of training and research and working closely with the HSE and all the private hospitals, I got an
16
www.salonmagazine.ie
opportunity to open a second salon – a fully private dedicated wig and hair loss salon at James Terrace in Malahide. This business has grown over the years, but I felt I could develop more services as many of my clients were enquiring about organic colour and more natural products. So it was time to research this natural and organic aspect of our industry.” This was when Liz discovered the Kemon brand and decided to open her exclusive organic hair salon, which is designed to offer men and women a choice of premium organic colour, more natural and vegan products and services. Among the ranges on offer is the Nayo Colour System, a series that is made with yogurt extracts and contains no ammonia, PPD or fragrance. “We are one of only a few premium salons in Dublin that also offers the Kemon Actyva 02, which is a truly innovative product. It helps prevent hair loss, along with skin, scalp and hair imperfections as it stimulates the blood flow through oxygen and serums. Our comprehensive range of Kemon Actyva certified products are also available for home care use.”
Organic growth Liz believes the organic market is growing and becoming much stronger than ever before. “In my opinion these products are very much needed as many clients have growing concerns about the use of too many chemicals and are thinking in a more health-conscious way. More and more clients are switching over to this natural/organic choice and making small changes for themselves. We all want to look and feel good – this hasn’t changed over the years, but our environment has, so it’s wonderful to be able to make changes and contribute to this in offering a choice of products without the premium price tag. I truly believe once customers have tried our affordable services and products they will continue
to use them. And for us as stylists, working with these products offers us a better environment to work in.” No. 5 underwent significant renovation before opening to achieve what Liz calls its “luxurious feel”. “And it enabled me bring everything under one roof and to move the wig and hair clinic upstairs in the building. When clients are going through a health trauma, they can be very vulnerable, so at the salon we offer advice, care, a listening ear and privacy with extremely experienced stylists who are truly professional and compassionate.” Liz chose No. 5’s launch party to host a coffee morning and customer appreciation day for two charities – the Irish Cancer Society and the Ross Nugent Foundation. “The salon and all our customers have always supported these charities and it’s been wonderful to give as much support as we can to them. And the business so far is thriving. Living in Malahide helps and the locals are really supportive of the brave decision I’ve made to open a complete organic salon and they really love the treatments and products and the results.” Liz loves being her own boss and owning her own business. “I wouldn’t have it any other way! Yes, it can been challenging and over the years I’ve experienced ups and downs in the business, but it’s all been worth it. I come from a working class background where nothing was ever handed to you and I’ve worked very hard to achieve success and I will continue to do so. I don’t take anything for granted, but l do consider myself very lucky to have achieved what I have so far in my career.”

PAYOT - SKINCARE HISTORY Payot is a cosmetic brand with an international reputation, born in 1920 of the extraordinary vision of one woman: Nadia Payot. Ahead of her time, she became one of the first female doctors involved in the women’s rights movement, Payot early on demonstrated her commitment to using her medical, scientific and herbal expertise in the skincare products she developed. It was a life-changing encounter that changed her vision of beauty and determined the basic principles behind her brand. When she met prima ballerina Anna Pavlova, Payot understood the importance of techniques to preserve the skin’s beauty and youth. She developed and then introduced her clients to facial exercises, which were the source of the 42Movement Massage, still performed today. Payot is one of the iconic skincare brands that have made their mark on the era and is a trailblazer in the foundations of modern cosmetics. Payot skincare ranges are developed to cater for all skin types and skin concerns, from sensitive skin to dedicated anti-ageing regimes.

ALL AGLOW Salon Magazine’s Linda Horan recently took a trip to Burgundy Skin & Beauty in Blackrock, Co Dublin to try out the Venus Glow treatment.
M
ulti-award-winning Burgundy Skin & Beauty opened in 2008 and has established itself as one of Ireland’s leading skin and beauty clinics. From the age of 24, Laura Mc Loughlin has created a haven for the ladies of Dublin to visit for the best beauty and skincare treatments on the market.
Laura employs 11 highly skilled staff, all of whom specialise in different aspects of skin and beauty, and prides herself on growing their careers as well as her own. That staff number is rising at a rapid pace.
Starting her career straight out of beauty college with the prestigious Bronwyn Conroy, Laura worked along side Bronwyn in the salon in Monkstown for a few years, learning along the way about what makes you to stand out from other therapists and salons. To this day she still praises Bronwyn for everything she has learned, and implements it in training her own staff now.
The skin clinic became a huge hit at Burgundy in 2017 when Laura decided to allocate an area of her salon specifically for skin treatments only. Using the best products and machines on the market, including two Venus Concept machines, which offer radio frequency skin tightening and fat reduction and also hydradermabrasion. The skin clinic also offers Ameson microneedling, Juliette Armand Skincare , environ skincare, image skincare, LED light therapy, and it is growing daily with already something new in the pipeline for later this summer.
After Bronwyn closed her doors, Laura found it impossible to find a boss as passionate as Bronwyn was, which led to her opening her own salon. Beginning in a small cottage with three rooms, she moved after five years into a new location in Newtown Park in Dublin’s Blackrock, which now has seven treatment rooms, a brow bar, four tanning rooms, six nail bars and three pedicure stations, allowing the business grow into what it is today.

How it works The vacuum gently pulls the skin to open up pores by removing impurities and excess oil. At the same time, the tip spins 360 degrees to evenly spread the saline that comes from two jet streams. Each jet stream is smaller than the average pore size, enabling them to deep-clean the pores well. The vacuum and spinning tip micro-massage the skin to spread nutrients released from the bloodstream, nourishing the skin for an instant glow. Venus Glow works to brighten dull skin; improve uneven skin tone; improve skin elasticity; moisturise skin; remove blackheads and whiteheads; control oily skin; and maximise effectiveness of skin care products and other facial therapies. It also complements each and every skin type with the aim of leaving it beaming. And according to Linda, that’s exactly what it did to her own face!
Freeze frame Burgundy Skin & Beauty also offers Venus Freeze, which is is a non-invasive anti-ageing treatment that works to firm up sagging skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles by using heat to boost collagen production. This helps to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance. It is safe for all skin types because there is no downtime. The treatments work very well for individuals who want a rejuvenation procedure that does not require recovery time. This procedure provides fast results, and many clients notice improvements after the first treatment. Sessions usually last around 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Most treatment providers will recommend a series of eight to 10 treatment sessions done weekly in order to see optimal results. Venus Freeze is powered by the patented (MP)² technology, which combines multi-polar radio frequency and pulsed electro magnetic fields. Together, these two technologies produce uniform heat under the skin’s surface.

THE HUSH & HUSH STORY Living a clean life is a philosophy that was instilled in us at a young age and one that we are still devoted to. Today, it’s more apparent than ever that the best approach to healthy aging is one that consists of using both internal and external products. As thefounders of Image Skincare, one of the leading clinical skincare brands worldwide, we have the skincare portion covered. But we found it impossible to find supplements void of fillers, additives and synthetic ingredients—and often left stores and vitamin shops empty handed. If we couldn’t find clean supplements, we knew others faced the same frustrations. So, we put together our knowledge and research of aging, skincare, beauty and wellness to formulate Hush & Hush, a line of luxury nutraceutical and healthy living products. Fuelling your body with the right nutrients, minerals and Clean Clinical Vitamins™ which you’ll find in each Hush & Hush product—is the missing piece of the puzzle we all need to look and feel our best.

SPA LIFE INTERNATIONAL 2019
A MEETING OF MINDS! SPA IRELAND CONSULTING
Spa Life International took place on 13 and 14 May in The Johnstown Estate Hotel & Spa in Co Meath. Diahann Buckley shares her thoughts on the two-day event.
T
he dust settles on another year’s Spa Life International, but the energy and the message live on. In a word, it was an ‘inspirational’ event. The social and networking aspect was indeed of immense value in both networking with peers and being able to celebrate and share business experiences. Industry suppliers and spa managers gathered to share their knowledge and experience freely in a professional yet relaxed environment. Two aspects stood out, firstly, the collaboration of spa managers sharing their business models and approaches, maximising resources namely menu utilisation and secondly, that the event was therapist-centred, which was of huge importance. ‘Bridging the gap between hotel and spa’ was presented by Orla Gallagher, spa manager, Gleneagles Resort and Louise Nicholl, reservations manager, Galgrom and you could hear a pin drop when these ladies took to the stage to discuss the interface between hotel and spa. There is no doubt that every spa manager attending saw the value of interdepartmental support and collaboration. The spa business sits under the umbrella of the hotel offering, however merging hotel department managers and colleagues across the business is essential to capture the guest and maximise internal marketing and communication.

Need for wellness Workplace wellness is certainly the trending focus across all business sectors. Considering we are advocates of wellness as part of our job remit, highlighting our own need for wellness is of great value. Our industry is built on the skill of our providers of service – our therapists – so how can we show our value and safeguard their working experience? This was expressed so brilliantly by Beata Aleksandrowicz, an international spa masseur and founder of Pure Massage. She focused on avoiding therapist burn out and how we must ensure we support and retain our experienced therapists. Her delivery and understanding of the skill and physical wear and tear of a spa career had us all captivated – truly the highlight of this year’s speakers for me. This topic brought many questions from the floor and the room was focused on the value of our spa industry professionals and how we can support them going forward. Education, value and retention are on everyone’s mind. The industry has grown very quickly in Ireland and the lack of qualified professionals was another hot topic. The numbers would suggest that many are qualifying in beauty and holistic skills year-on-year, however we still have a shortfall of available experienced therapists. Pay rates and therapist value was discussed across both days and there
is an agreed consensus that our industry professionals need a forum of development and recognition of skill and experience. On a closing note, I pose the question ‘What happens if we invest in therapists and they leave versus what if we don’t and they stay?’. Thank you to all the spa managers, consultants and contributors for an exceptional event, it’s in my calendar for next year already.

INTERIORS 2019
INTERIOR
INSPIRATION The interior and decoration of your salon or spa is one of the most important aspects of your business. It should be well designed, on-trend and eye-catching. Because of the nature of your business, it also needs to maximise comfort and convenience for your customers. It’s an old cliche, but first impressions last and you only get one chance to make that first impression, so make it count. You are in the beauty, hair and aesthetic business, so make sure your premises
communicate that message. Quality interiors will help you attract more customers and convert them into loyal and returning ones. They will reflect your values and the type of experience you offer your clients. Remember that your salon or spa is your creative statement since it shows the way you conceive beauty and how you express it to the world.
You can do this by maximising the use of space at the same time. There’s no reason why hair and beauty cannot be functional. Make sure to read this special feature for some great ideas on furnishings for your salon business and leading product innovations from Ireland’s furniture and interior suppliers that will help make your business stand out!

The finished result is a cool and modern open space with an industrial vibe. Exposed brick combined with wooden floors and natural stone give this salon texture and a strong identity.

The colour bar area in this salon is of particular interest. The salon owners advised they had an idea to make the colour bar an open area where clients can see colour technicians prepare colour prior to application while seated at a bespoke counter area (without mirrors). After all, we believe that a five-star treatment begins with the touch of the bath robe and the smooth feel of the spa linen on your skin before the professional treatment even commences.”
Pure Spa Linen is made with pure white 100pc combed cotton. The design has a sharp line of embroidery along the length of the sheet on either side, to add a level of elegance to each sheet. This linen has a superior thread count of 300, which feels incredible soft to the touch, and cool and gentle on the skin. The collection is made in Turkey, with a stitched embroidered border, which is applied piece by piece by skilled workers. The embroidery is available in three colours: Silver Grey, Pebble or Pure White to match the coordinating Sumptuous, Serenity and Comfy towels from BC Softwear. THREE TIMES A CHARM! We report from the third Spa Life Ireland Convention with its unique combination of exposure to new product innovations; shared industry insights; extensive networking opportunities; and quality management education. Spa Life International returned to The Johnstown Estate to provide a comprehensive programme of networking, product launches and learning opportunities over two days. The opening day comprised of the traditional round of speed dating meetings where spa owners were able to meet face-toface with suppliers of their choice to review the supply market and discover what new and innovative products might be suitable for their spas. These meetings were interspersed with several networking breaks that enabled delegates to visit the EXPO Arena where numerous leading brands also had display stands showcasing their products and services. The first day concluded with a networking dinner and entertainment. COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMME A first-class line up of speakers on the second day commenced with a keynote address from Patrick Holford, founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition. The remainder of the educational sessions led delegates through the process of how to win new customers via digital marketing, delivered by Connor Keppel, VP of marketing at Phorest Salon Software; how to increase the average spend from existing customers, presented by Michelle Hammond of Spa Business School; and how to attract and engage more hotel guests in spa experiences by Orla Gallagher of Gleneagles Resort and Louise Nichol of Ireland’s Galgorm Spa Resort. These sessions were complemented with a talk by Beata Aleksandrovic on the importance of workplace wellness and avoiding therapist burnout. The final session of the day was a new innovation from Spa Life called the Spa Manager Summit. Delegates were invited to submit questions to the Spa Life team throughout the event about the key issues and challenges facing their businesses and the Irish spa industry per se. These questions were then addressed by the panel with interaction from the audience. “This is the third successive year that Spa Life has come to Ireland and it has quickly become established as Ireland’s annual spa conference,” said event manager for Spa Life Ireland Peigin Crowley. INTERNATIONAL BRAND SUPPORT Closing the conference, Spa Life founder Andrew Hammond gave praise to Platinum sponsors Chleo Enterprises, which showcased the Sothys skincare brand, Elemis, who have supporting the event for three consecutive years and Gerrard International, who showcased BeautyLab London, Mii Cosmetics and Spongelle. He reminded the audience that they must continue to invest in themselves and encouraged the senior managers in the audience to extend the invitation to their middle management teams to attend the next event and promised to adapt the education programme according to their needs. email: info@spa-life.co.uk or info@salon-life.co.uk.

BUILDER BASE
Perform a manicure. Firstly, cleanse and disinfect the clients hands. Shape the nail and remove cuticle growth from the nail plate with a cuticle pusher. Ensure all material is removed from the nail plate.
Prepare the nail. Remove all surface shine from the nail plate and etch the nail with our pro file in grit 180/240. Ensure the entire surface of the nail plate has been given attention and the nail is well buffed. Do not use a grit lower than 180 as this may damage the clients nail.
Dehydrate the nail. Soak a lint free pad with pro prep and wipe solution and scrub the nail plate. Ensure the entire nail is dehydrated. The nail should appear white and chalky in appearance. Note, primer isn't always required but if your client has oily nail beds prone to lifting you can apply a layer of pro primer allowing it to air dry.
Base Coat. Apply 1 layer of regular gel polish base coat. Ensure you cap the free edge and make sure to not flood the cuticle or side walls. Cure this for 60 seconds in our Dual Pro lamp or for 120 seconds in a UV lamp. NOTE: Base coat is applied first as it acts as a medium to help the rigid builder base flex with the natural nail.
48
www.salonmagazine.ie
Builder Base. Apply an even layer of builder base over the entire nail plate, capping the free edge. Start by placing the loaded brush in the center of the nail and push back towards the cuticle. Draw the brush down the nail applying an even coat. Ensure the cuticle and side walls are free from product. Cure for 60 seconds in our Dual Pro lamp or 120 seconds in a UV lamp. NOTE: You can apply more than 1 layer if desired to act as a gel overlay. Follow the same steps and cure times for each layer. Gel Polish. Once the builder base has been cured you can now go directly in with your first layer of gel polish. You should leave the builder base's inhibition layer on the nail. This will ensure a tight bond between the gel polish and builder base. Ensure you cap the free edge with your gel polish layers. Cure your gel polish for 60 seconds in our Dual Pro lamp or 120 seconds in a UV lamp. Repeat this step 1-2 times more to achieve your desired opacity.
Top Coat. Apply a generous layer of no wipe or regular top coat to the entire nail capping the free edge. Make sure application is neat and no product has flowed into the cuticle or sidewalls. Cure for 60 seconds in our Dual Pro lamp or 120 seconds in a UV lamp.
Finish. Condition the nails with Bio Cuticle oil to re-hydrate the nail and skin. TIP: Wait for the nails to cool down after curing before applying oils. This will prevent the nails from appearing dull.

RESPONSIBLE TANNING STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS The Sunbed Association’s Joe McGlinchey explains the organisation’s response to the Government strategy aimed at people’s approach to the sun.
Y
ou may have read recent reports in the media about a new government strategy aimed at improving the ways in which the general public behaves in the sunshine. One of the target groups for this strategy is sunbed users. There’s no doubt we would all agree that responsible exposure to sunshine and responsible tanning are essential approaches to prevent sunburn, which must always be avoided. However, The Sunbed Association (TSA) has identified a number of significant inaccuracies within the strategy and so continues its dialogue with government to highlight both these and two key areas where current regulation of sunbeds in Ireland is failing to deliver adequate consumer protection under existing EU regulations. The training of staff and enforcing compliance with the EU standard for the maximum UV emission levels of sunbeds are two important areas of sunbed operation that will ensure greater consumer safety and confidence.
There is already a provision in legislation for the introduction of mandatory training and the EU standard for maximum sunbed emission levels to be the same minute for minute as the Mediterranean midday summer sun has been in place since 2009. Sunbed operators were recently invited to a series of presentations organised by TSA on the proposed government strategy and heard first-hand about TSA’s strategy to challenge this including the appointment of a top public affairs consultant. If you were unable to attend or missed an invitation to the event and would like to find out more about how you can get involved and support TSA’s efforts, then please get in contact. Membership of TSA is clearly an indicator to your customers and the regulatory authorities that you are a best practice
operator of your sunbeds. We are always keen to welcome new members on board and a visit to our website or call into the office will provide you with all the information you need to come on board.

HOW TO MAXIMISE RETAIL
DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS Make the most of the summer season with beauty business expert Liz McKeon’s suggestions on how to maximise sales opportunities.
S
ummer is a key season for salon and spa retail. Everyone is excited about their summer holidays and waxing, tanning, lashes, manicures and pedicures are now all essential beauty rituals for a client’s pre-travel. Stocking adequate supplies of retail product to support these treatments is a no-brainer, but they need to be recommended and promoted by your staff.
I have listed a few key promotions you can quickly and easily introduce into your business that will boost sales in an instant. • Introduce a ‘holiday package’ of treatments. Once a client mentions going on holiday, suggest she books the package. • Double check your product knowledge: know how to use the products, how long they will last, how your brand compares to others, how it can be used in conjunction with other brands, what size the bottles are andthe prices. • Train your beauty therapists to retail, when the client comes in for her appointment, introduce her holiday retail

requirements. Ask for the retail sale, if you don’t, she will buy the products you have recommended, but from somebody else. Change your window/retail displays and merchandising for the summer months, making sun products very prominent. Use your product information; educate your clients, highlighting the unique selling points of your brand. Run a competition with your staff, for example, whoever sells the most sun products over the summer months gets the prize.
Beyond this there are more opportunities. Are your clients buying their sun products from pharmacies and department stores? Sun protection is big business, but less than 5pc of these sales are transacted in spas and beauty salons. According to the National Cancer Institute, a staggering 42pc of adults don’t use sun protection. With a dedicated retail
line that is strong in SPF protection, plus a retail strategy backed up by client education, this could transform your business during summer. It’s easy to become complacent and rely on the traditional summer beauty rituals to drive sales, but with clever marketing, an engaged team and a focus on retail, you can boost your business and improve your bottom line.

ONE YEAR LATER
The HR Company’s Linda Ward explains what’s happened in the 12 months since GDPR was introduced. It is now one year since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was introduced as updated legislation across the EU. The privacy of information and security of data is more important than ever, and the approach of individuals and businesses alike towards data protection has evolved. This is evident from recently published highlights of the first annual report by the Data Protection Commission. Complaints A total of 2,864 complaints were received, of which the majority were resolved. Eighteen formal decisions were undertaken – 13 of which upheld the complaint, while five rejected the complaint. Thirty-two complaints were investigated under S.I. 336 of 2011 in respect of various forms of electronic direct marketing – 18 related to email marketing, 11 related to SMS and three related to telephone marketing. Data breaches A total of 3,542 valid data security breaches recorded. Of the total number of breaches, 38 related to 11 multinational technological companies. Enquiries A total of 31 own volition enquiries were opened by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) under the Data Protection Act 2018 into the surveillance of citizens by the State sector for law enforcement purposes through the use of technologies, which include CCTV, body worn cameras, drones and other technologies. The special investigation into the Public Services Card of the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection was also ongoing by the SIU. A total of 15 statutory inquiries were opened in relation to multinational technology companies’ GDPR compliance. Events On 19 December 2018, the launch of the first stream of a public consultation on the processing of children’s personal data and their rights as data subjects under GDPR took place. The closing date for this stream was extended to 5 April 2019

As a result of these findings and occurrences, the focus of the Data Protection Commission for 2019 has shifted:Q2 2019 will see the DPC roll out support for a Data Protection Officer (DPO) network in Ireland. A new consultation team for the DPC has been given the task of providing guidance to data controllers in the charity and voluntary sector, with the aim of issuing targeted guidance for the charity sector in Q2 and Q3 of 2019.

Convey an original brand story When creating content, your main goal will be to build a target audience for it. The aim would be to produce a distinctive brand content voice. Consider passionate words that reflect your brand. • Is the brand personality official or relaxed? • Does it look zany or caring or funny? A constant voice enables you to develop a relationship with your audience. When they relate to the content, they’ll certainly convert into your followers. Modify your posts to every single social platform. Discover the most recent content styles on social platforms. As an example, long form inspirational updates do rather well on LinkedIn. Likewise, Instagram users are mad for motivation through stories, story videos, and IGTV videos. Below are a few additional content tips: 1. Recognise your audience as well as their content inclinations. 2. Make the content informative and pleasurable. 3. Search for industry trending content. A distinctive style that gives a voice for your brand can help your company to be noticeable. It’s also going to assist you in content marketing victory.

Due to the countless amount of content created every single day, it’s difficult for small enterprises to be seen online, but 20pc ought to be creation and 80pc promotion (not the opposite way round). A terrific way to overcome being unnoticed would be to get together with small business owners who: • Market towards a similar audience. • Are not competitors. • Also practise content marketing and make use of similar platforms to market their content.

Salon aesthetics news
IRISH GOVERNMENT LOOKING TO IMPOSE AGE RESTRICTIONS ON COSMETIC PROCEDURES The Minister for Health Simon Harris is considering a ban on treatments such as Botox and fillers for anyone under 18 years of age. He said that in theory such a ban would benefit young people in the same way as the sunbed ban of 2015. According to the Minister, increasing concern about standards in some parts of the beauty industry has led him to ask health officials to investigate if there needs to be tighter regulations. “It is clear this is a growing industry across all age groups and all sexes. While the profession and the products are regulated, I am conscious this is an industry that is continuing to grow and, particularly worryingly, it is targeting young men and women. There are a number of reasons for this, including a desire by
young men and women to be perfect, driven by social media. “But there are also companies and professionals who are exploiting that for their own gain. There is a need to examine whether current regulations are sufficient or whether further regulation is required. This is not an issue solely confined to Ireland but one I believe we need to address as a matter of priority.” Minister Harris has asked his department to assess whether it should impose a minimum age for the use of these products, stressing that it is an area that cannot go unregulated or unsupervised. Meanwhile, doctors have also raised concerns about the increase in patients being admitted to hospitals following botched cosmetic procedures.
DRIVING CHANGE IN THE
AESTHETIC INDUSTRY Entrepreneur and MD of Bronwyn Conroy International Anna Keely shares her thoughts on the stated intention of Minister of Health Simon Harris to regulate the aesthetic industry in Ireland. Keely is one of the founding members of HABIC, the newly formed Hair and Beauty Industry Confederation Ireland, which launched on 8 July and works closely with Image Skillnet. The regulation of the aesthetic industry in Ireland is long overdue and so welcome. We are delighted to be at the forefront of this initiative and to work alongside Minister Simon Harris. This regulation will finally help us to drive change and raise the profile of the industry in line with other markets. We have been working hard to make this happen and our ambition has been to put proper legislation in place and raise the status and earning power of beauty professionals here in Ireland and to help bring about real and much needed change in line with other countries. But also, we want clients to feel that they are properly eductated about treatments, and have confidence to safely navigate the myriad of choice now available to them both in terms of consultants, procedures and treatments. So this regulation will help both the client and the beauty professional in a very real way and bring about long overdue change to our industry. As a highly respected brand at the forefront of skincare in Ireland, with schools both in Dublin and Cork, we need to be at the table and help bring about this change.

The college offers a clear roadmap for those wishing to study beauty or pursue a career in aesthetics. This is evidenced by the amount of additional training and opportunities the students receive, which includes training from beauty and aesthetic brands, modular training and learning options with a focus on skincare and aesthetics without having to study elements of beauty that the student may have no interest in, and access to employment with top skincare, beauty and aesthetic employers. The school has a range of new Level 4 Advanced skin care and aesthetic training courses on offer for September and will be in attendance at the inaugural Future of Beauty Aesthetic Show in the RDS on 7 and 8 September. The school also works with all of the examining bodies – ITEC, VTCT, CIBTAC and CIDESCO – thus ensuring that our students can obtain qualifications with all of the recognised accreditating bodies.

WAKING
BEAUTY
Dympna Fitzgerald, Totalcare
What is modern beauty? Has the aesthetics industry reborn yet? As someone who has seen the industry move forward for the last 30 years, Dympna Fitzgerald from Totalcare believes it’s more alive than ever.
I
have seen major change in the industry since I started out when I was 19. Some changes have been positive and some have been not so positive. Overall, I can see Irelands beauty salon being split into three distinct groups. Firstly, you have the general beauty salon. These haven’t changed much since I’ve been in the industry and most are excellent at what they do. They generally work with nails, tan, make-up and cosmetic-based facials, offering services to clientele in the low to mid-price range. Secondly, we have cosmetics clinics who often work with injectables. This is a relatively new industry that has really utilised social media to promote itse;f and get fantastic celebrity endorsements. While I personally have my reservations about invasive techniques, they certainly are showing the rest of us how to market ourselves. However, I have received distressing reports from salons who are working with clients that are suffering from neurosis and disfigurement from injectables like Botox, which can have permanent and negative effects on the appearance and confidence of the end user. Thirdly, there is a ‘hybrid’ model of salon, which may not do the likes of nails and tan, but uses non-invasive and modern technologies to treat the widest range of conditions with excellent results and consumer satisfaction. Customers are always very loyal to these clinics and keep coming back because they want more of a system which works for them. I notice that word of mouth really works for these clinics, but they are getting onto the social media bandwagon, creating
60
www.salonmagazine.ie
their own stamp on the industry. I work in my own clinic which would be a hybrid model. We feel that targeting health conscious consumers is the way forward for these salons to grow. Many consumers are afraid of hearing ‘modern’ after seeing the sometimes graphic content that is shared on social media of certain invasive treatments and injectables. But what I’d say to the industry as a whole is that while ‘fast fashion’ might be working for the textile industry, from what I experience, the Irish consumer wants a quality treatment with the best of natural products and excellent after care and support. They also want to be able to trust their salon, so any equipment you have should always be kept up to date and serviced. I feel this could be a reason why insurance has skyrocketed for our industry. I am convinced that if more non-invasive beauty was offered, insurance premiums would begin to stabilise. I know salons whose premiums have gone up around 50pc over the last five years and my own has risen by about 30pc. A safer and more regulated industry must happen from within so that we can all benefit from the synergy effect that can happen within Irelands beauty industry. If we all work together, we can all benefit from each other’s existence. The everyday client has no problem aging; but they want to age gracefully with as many natural elements as possible. That’s why I love this industry, a vibrant community that wants to help people be the best they can be. I can’t see why the industry cannot continue to grow and develop for the next 30+ years.

COCOON MEDICAL LAUNCHES ELYSION LASER DIODE SYSTEM IN IRELAND
C
ocoon Medical recently launched the award-winning Elysion laser in the Irish beauty market. Elysion is a high powered high specification diode laser for hair removal. It is one of the top selling high quality lasers in Europe. Its success is based on a superior specification laser offered at an affordable price. In the past most high quality lasers were priced between €35,000 and €150,000, which for most salons was unaffordable. Lower priced lasers often originated from China and offered low power, poor results and lack of after sale support. At €25,000, Elysion is the first high quality laser at an affordable price. The company also offers lease finance to spread the cost over three or five years. Elysion laser was originally launched in Spain eight years ago and became the top selling laser in the biggest laser hair removal market in Europe. In partnership with Cosmeditech, Coccon Medical UK was established in 2017 and Elysion became a huge success with over 100 systems across the UK in the past year. The company has now seen strong demand in Ireland and has installed nine systems across the country in the first four months of the year. ”Our success is based on offering high quality laser at a reasonable price, often 40pc below competitors and along with this offering exceptional customer service and marketing support to make Elysion a highly profitable and successful

addition to salons,” said managing director of Cocoon Medical UK Peter McGuinness. “We are seeing strong demand in the Irish market and have a team in place to support customers on both technical, clinical and marketing support.” About Cocoon Medical Cocoon Medical is European manufacturer with its head office in Barcelona. It is ISO 13485 accredited and its devices are Medical CE certified, which with new laws coming into force in May 2020 will be a requirement for all aesthetic devices whether laser hair removal or cryolipolysis. For salons looking to introduce new devices they need to ensure that they comply with this new legislation. Cocoon offers a range of devices, including its top of the range Primelase diode laser, Cooltech cryolipolysis, Safyre RF and the top selling Elysion diode laser. The company offers full training and both initial and ongoing and new customers have access to its concierge armketing service free of charge. This service offers customers access to a marketing team for all print and digital marketing including website development, posters, brochures, digital marketing and social media marketing. So what’s on offer? Threading is still very popular and favoured choice by most for shaping and creating the perfect brow. The age-old skill of rolling threads to remove untidy hair is now practised in most salons and spas. It’s so popular we have even seen threading bars popping up in department stores and shopping centres so ladies can get their brow fix during their lunch break. This is one skill that every beautician should have under their belt. Staying with brows, another firm favourite is the precision brows workshop. In this one-day workshop you will learn the correct seven-step method to achieve perfect results using techniques, including tinting, waxing and threading to achieve the ultimate shape. To finish off the eyes, every beautician should master the skill of applying individual eyelashes. Moving on to relaxation, a lovely add onto your skill set is hot stone massage, which is increasing in popularity. Heated stones in fragrant oils are applied to key points on the body. The direct heat relaxes the body, which means the massage is more effective and intense than a regular massage. The technique of working the hot stones along the body with cooler stones encourages the body to detox and heal, increasing lymph flow and flush out waste For a full list of beauty workshops please visit www.portobelloinstitute.ie/beauty. For further information on beauty workshops or full or part-time beauty courses please contact Jenny Cosgrave on tel: 01 892 0000 or email beauty@portobelloinstitue.ie. Training and education
Salon aesthetics training
AUDIT AWARE Director at Aesthetic Training Academy Ireland (ATAI) Patrick Ryall shares his thoughts on regulation. Audited education with the accountability of recertification is part of the answer to poor clinical outcomes. Regulated courses are not enough; burns, hypo/hyperpigmentation, and client complaints plague the industry. If current regulated courses were fit for purpose, then this would not be such the issue that it is. Regulated qualifications produced by awarding bodies can provide for a quality qualification as the course has to meet a robust educational standard. However, there is no guarantee that the delivering educational institution is offering an educational experience matching the high nature of the regulated qualification. While many colleges do provide quality education, there is no audit trail that the college is adhering to any set standard.
The college also has to pass a stringent audit process to show it can provide and maintain a level of quality assurance suited to the aesthetic sector. As a medical and non-medical training academy, ATAI provides the only advanced industry entry course available in Ireland: Level 4 Aesthetic Therapy. If you have wanted to enter the industry but have no interest in traditional beauty treatments then this is the course you have been waiting for.
The ISO standard (International Organisation for Standardisation) blended with a regulated education standard sets to bring accountability to these processes that are open to interpretation and abuse. Learners gain their qualification for a set period, typically three years. After this time, the therapist must produce evidence of good practice to be recertified for another three years.

BE AT THE HEART OF YOUR INDUSTRY
“I wanted to modernise and expand the current business. I had aspirations to achieve a growth of 20 percent to ensure profitability and I believed that the Guinot Franchise opportunity would support that vision. I wanted to create a financially and emotionally rewarding business that could either be sold or utilised to support future life plans.”
Perform a manicure. Firstly, cleanse and disinfect the clients hands. Shape the nail and remove cuticle growth from the nail plate with a cuticle pusher. Ensure all material is removed from the nail plate.
