SECOND SPA LIFE IRELAND CONFERENCE TAKES PLACE The second Spa Life Ireland Convention took place in June at the Johnstown Estate Hotel & Spa in Co Meath. More than 120 delegates from 31 spas and 20 suppliers gathered for the event, which offers attendees a unique blend of one-to-one meetings in a speed-dating style, combined with high-level educational seminars, a gala dinner and networking opportunities.

in a panel session with Spa Business School founder Michelle Hammond on developing your spa ‘dream team’. “Spa is more than just beauty,” he said. “We can offer something with so much more depth; we can transform people on physical and spiritual level. We make revenue out of emotional experiences so only when we hire passionate, emotional, effective not efficient people and leave the business of therapy to them can we really succeed.”

hen it comes to the interior of your salon, you will want to get the most out of the space you have while also taking into account the needs of both your clients and staff. It’s important to constantly monitor the look and feel of your salon and to keep the decor updated and fresh. First impressions are of course always key, whether you are trying to impress a new or returning customer. You only get one chance to make that first impression, so make it count. This doesn’t have to cost the earth but a certain amount of investment is necessary so that you make a return on it. For examwww.salonmagazine.ie

Have a floor plan that works for your business, with washing areas away from other customers. Never have worn out looking furniture as it sends out the wrong message to clients. If you have a colour scheme or theme make sure it’s consistent throughout the salon and use mirror and lighting to show off your space to a maximum.

DUBLIN SALON INTRODUCES GENDER NEUTRAL PRICING

A

Dublin beauty salon is the first in Ireland to introduce gender neutral pricing in a bid to equalise all treatments between sexes. Owner of Maven Hair Studios in Glasnevin Michelle Grimes said she was inspired to create fairer pricing earlier this summer based on her personal frustrations at having to pay additional charges for female driven products.

annoyed at myself that this was happening and I was in a position where I do something to control this. I was doing a friend’s hair, whose hair is really short and my next client had waist length hair which took 45 minutes, which highlighted to me it’s not just a gender thing – anybody with short hair is paying the same as someone with long hair. This way, it’s broken down much more fairly.”

“I started thinking about it last year and it’s been in the back of my mind since then, when I first heard about the ‘pink tax’. Things like tampons are taxed because they’re seen as luxury items and that really annoyed me,” she told Independent.ie Style. “Women’s razors, deodorants and similar products are priced about what a man would pay as well. I began getting

Grimes said the response to the new pricing system has been positive. “Women think it’s amazing and in the last few weeks, I’ve had a lot of new clients with really short hair who don’t want to pay for a blowdry. A lot of the gents I look after, I’ll do their partners’ hair as well so they can’t give out because it all balances out in the household.”

BEAUTY BUSINESS EXPERT LIZ MCKEON ANNOUNCES BUSINESS OWNERS RETREAT 2019

HEATWAVE SHINES LIGHT ON EMPLOYEE WORKING CONDITIONS

T

he recent spate of hot weather has raised the issue of employer obligations when it comes to working in such conditions. For it to be legally safe to work employers must meet certain conditions in order to provide safe working conditions for employees. The HSA’s Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Applications) Regulations 2007 state in such weather employers must ensure adequate ventilation is in place for workers, acceptable for the physical demands involved in their work. While there is currently no maximum temperature stated for workplaces, a minimum temperature of 17.5C must be maintained while this drops to 16C if significant physical effort is involved. During the heatwave the HSA encouraged employers to loosen strict dress code practices by allowing employees to remove ties and jackets to keep cool and to wear loose clothing while regular water breaks are also needed. “In extremely hot weather conditions, measures such as for example, the provisions of fans, provision of cold water dispensers and regular water breaks for staff, the relaxation of formal dress codes, the introduction of flexible working patterns etc, can assist in maintaining comfortable working conditions,” it said.

International beauty business expert Liz McKeon

International beauty business expert Liz McKeon has announced the 2019 dates of her acclaimed Business Owners Retreat at the five-star Princesa Yaiza Reort in Lanzarote. The flagship business growth retreat is an intensive, intimate and hands-on group coaching experience that promises to change the way business owners operate their business now and in the future. The Princesa Yaiza Resort offers beautiful sea views and is an idyllic location for a business retreat, allowing owners and operators to focus on their business development and goals for the coming year. The spectacular location also provides an opportunity to reset personal health and wellness objectives balancing mind, body and spirit. Meanwhile, the Irish Business and Employers Confederation said that employers must make comfortable conditions for their employees in the event of such hot weather, and once this is managed employees are obliged to work as normal. “Where an employer is obviously sympathetic and tries to alleviate the worst effects of hot weather most employees should bear with temporary discomfort and continue working normally,” it added.

GOVERNMENT'S FOCUS MUST SHIFT TO SMALL, HOMEGROWN BUSINESSES – SFA The Small Firms Association (SFA) has called on Government to shift its focus from multinationals to small, indigenous businesses in Budget 2019. It made the call at the National Economic Dialogue in Dublin Castle in June. ”On one hand, we need to make sure that our economy is more resilient to external shocks. On the other hand, we have a situation where, even with a strongly growing economy, less than half of SFA members tell us that their businesses are growing,” said Linda Barry, SFA assistant director. “It is clear to those of us working with small businesses that there is a single solution that would mitigate both these macro and micro challenges. We need a national Small Business Strategy, placing a clear focus on the 98% of businesses employing half the private sector workforce, which are the lifeblood of towns and villages around the country.” The priority measures proposed for Budget 2019 are that all Budgetary measures should be assessed for their impact on small firms and no measures that impose additional costs on small companies should be introduced; the self-employed Earned Income Tax Credit must be brought to the same level as the PAYE tax credit; and capital gains tax rates need to be reviewed – the 33% rate and the restrictive limit on Entrepreneur Relief is a poor reward for years and often decades of hard work to build a business.

Skinician has always been committed to using only the best ingredients and newest technology, bringing to market an exceptional range of powerful products packed full of antioxidants and free from parabens. Working closely with its cosmeceutical pharmacy and taking advantage of new ingredients and scientific improvements the team has now enhanced the base line formulations of its full range.

‘Skinician promises to partner with salons for success’ The refresh included some bigger changes for seven of the core products with the additional of more active ingredients and well as increasing the SPF in all their moisturisers from 15 to 30. The new and improved formulations launched in salons nationwide in May. “I am truly delighted with the improvements we have made to our Skinician formulations. I didn’t think it was possible to improve on the original formulations but now that we have completed the process I am delighted with the improvements and the addition of so many new and exciting active ingredients. I know that our salons and consumer will enjoy the benefits of these improved formulations,” said education manager Lindsey Fenwick. Skinician promises to partner with salons for success, putting the needs of its salons at the forefront of every decision. DEKA HAVE DEVELOPED A NEW TECHNOLOGY BASED ON 4 KEY CONCEPTS – EFFECTIVENESS, SPEED, SIMPLICITY, AND SAFETY, AND THIS INNOVATIVE IDEA IS KNOWN AS MOVEO TECHNOLOGY.

EFFECTIVENESS:

SIMPLICITY:

Thanks to the Moveo sapphire tip, the handpiece design enables double the energy transfer in comparison with standard laser systems.

The simplified software and integrated database permits rapid choice of treatment parameters for any phototype, area and hair type.

Moveo uses a wavelength of 755nm, which is universally recognised as the most effective hair removal laser on the market.

An accumulator displays the energy delivers during treatment and an acoustic signal warns the user when the desired end-point has been reached.

SPEED:

SAFETY:

Through a 20mm tip size, the Moveo handpiece is evenly navigated over the desired treatment area in simple movements, to allow faster removal of unwanted hair.

The contact cooling system integrated into handpiece guaranteed maximum patient comfort.

3D INNOVATION

Located in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, with free parking and a private location, 3D Aesthetic & Beauty Clinic is making its mark on the industry with its revolutionary treatments.

The 3D Aesthetic & Beauty Clinic, formerly known as 3D Lipo and Skincare, was opened in March 2013. The original plan for the clinic was a 3D Lipo clinic as the companies owners introduced the 3D Lipo and 3D Skintech systems into Ireland. They hired manager Sarah Jane McGrath to run their clinic for them and it soon expanded into the beauty market. Over the last five years the clinic rebranded to 3D Aesthetic & Beauty Clinic – ‘the innovators in facial and body aesthetics’ – offering advanced skin treatments along with the essential beauty treatments to their clients. Along with manager Sarah Jane, there are two other staff members – Claire, who has been with the clinic for the last four and a half years, and newest recruit Caoimhe. “Our unique selling point is we offer advanced treatments with international brands such as DMK and 3D Lipo to our clients at very reasonable prices,” explains Sarah Jane. “They travel from all over to have these treatments. No two clients are the same, therefore each is given a full consultation to ensure that we prescribe the best course of treatment and home care possible. DMK in particular treats all different skin concerns, from acne to pigmentation, and rosacea to age management.” Shortlisted in The Irish Hair and Beauty Awards for Cosmetic Clinic of the Year for the second year in a row, Sarah Jane says that as a small business, she and the team value each customer’s experience. “We work on building relationships with each of our clients in order to be able to adjust and introduce services that we feel will benefit their specific needs within the aesthetic market. We hope to evolve with the growing aesthetic industry in Ireland, which I’m delighted is growing, both with treatments but most importantly within the training sector. I do feel that regulations need be set in Ireland with particular aesthetic treatments to avoid future problems. I feel we need to take examples from other countries like Australia where the aesthetic industry is booming.”

DMK ENZYME THERAPY RESTORING SKIN TO ITS PEAK CONDITION Salon Magazine’s editor took a trip to 3D Aesthetic & Beauty Clinic recently to try out the DMK Enzyme Therapy, which was done by manager Sarah Jane McGrath. DMK is the only company in the world to utilise the beneficial effects of transfer messenger enzymes. Enzymes are living substances that regulate health and work with certain minerals in the body to form a natural system of antioxidants that fight corrosive free radicals. Properly formulated, they can remove dead protein, toxins and other effluvia from the epidermis using a process called ‘reverse osmosis’. Where some cosmetic facial treatments may only act on the surface of the skin, DMK Enzyme Treatments works with the skin. The enzymes strengthen the structural integrity of the skin to create a healthy environment for cells to live and thrive in. Enzyme Therapy exercises facial muscles and works to leave the skin feeling firm. What is this therapy recommended for? DMK Enzyme Therapy is suitable for all skin concerns such as acne, pigmentation, rosacea, age management as each treatment is customised to the clients needs. The Enzyme Therapy aids in the removal of dead skin cells, flushes fresh blood and nutrients throughout the skin network and improve lymphatic drainage to detoxify the skin along with tightening the skin. Can you explain the steps etc ? We started the treatment with a consultation discussing your concerns, lifestyle

20

www.salonmagazine.ie

and diet and what your home care regimes consisted of. Then we started the treatment with a deep cleanse to remove any impurities, followed by with Epitoxyl, a detoxifying tonic to evaporate toxins within the skin with sea kelp extract. An exfoliation is usually next, however we couldn’t do this on the day. We then applied pore reduction drops to minimise pore appearance along with melanotech drops to assist in with treating uneven skin tone. I then applied Fibromax Vitamin C, this powder is formulated in liquid droplets encapsulated in silica particles that are activated upon immediate contact with the skin. This benefits a wide variety of concerns such as fine lines, pigmentation, dullness, acne, eczema and protection against UVB damage. I then mixed the Enzyme Masque #1 with Aqua d’Herb and applied it to your chest, neck and face ensuring to apply over the lymph nodes and along the muscles to create the tightening effect. The masque is left on for 45 minutes and is then removed and followed with DMK’s finishing products formulated to allow transepidermal delivery of the ingredients into the skin using Beta Gel, Direct Delivery Vitamin C Serum, Herb & Mineral, Eyetone and Nutra Screen SPF30. What was the result? At the end of the treatment there is a subtle dilation of the peripheral capillaries that typically disappear shortly after the treatment. This is known as the Plasmatic Effect and looks like a road map of capillaries. This indicates the treatment is successful and homeostasis is present for a healthy function skin.

Fred Hoffman spoke effusively on how to manage multiple generations, from baby boomers to Generation Z, in the workplace and The Spa Whisperer Nigel Franklyn took part

SPASPA IRERLAND IRELAND 2018

This year’s speakers included the keynote Dr Franz Linser, who gave delegates his unique insight into next-generation wellness. “We can’t just keep putting creams on people’s skin and expecting it to solve everything, we’ll become more and more irrelevant every day,” he told them. “The spa market needs a holistic approach and a more complex offer that includes mental and social aspects. It’s time to offer more than just momentary wellness, a way to habitual wellness for the body, the soul and the self.”

in a panel session with Spa Business School founder Michelle Hammond on developing your spa ‘dream team’. “Spa is more than just beauty,” he said. “We can offer something with so much more depth; we can transform people on physical and spiritual level. We make revenue out of emotional experiences so only when we hire passionate, emotional, effective not efficient people and leave the business of therapy to them can we really succeed.” Spa Life Ireland 2018 was brought to a close by Sharron Lowe, who managed to give delegates her unique mind makeover in just 45 minutes. “It’s great to see such enthusiasm from the Irish spa and salon sector for this type of event,” said Spa Life director Andrew Hammond. “We’ve seen some good growth in all areas compared with last year and we’re already planning for 2019 so we hope we can attract even more senior spa and hospitality professionals to join us.”

CELEBRITY ARCHITECT HUGH WALLACE UNVEILS NEW SPA AT KILDARE’S OSPREY HOTEL

SPA IRELAND 2018

Celebrity architect and star of RTE’s The Great House Revival and Home of the Year Hugh Wallace has unveiled a new €1.2m spa at The Osprey Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare. The spa is the latest addition to the complete Osprey Complex. Last year the hotel opened a new restaurant, which was also designed by Douglas Wallace Architects. Sligo-based Voya has been chosen as the flagship product for the spa. “We wanted the spa to feel like a real retreat but didn’t want it to feel forced or contrived, so we took our inspiration from the natural Irish landscape and used the colours and textures that are readily seen in nature and in Ireland,” said Wallace. “For example, the curved feature wall which snakes its way through the heart of the spa is made with beautiful Irish oak, the wallpapers have been inspired by the weave seen in Irish linen and even the light fittings are reminiscent of delicate, traditional Irish wicker baskets. It was important for our client, the PREM Group, who own The Osprey, to make the spa feel inherently Irish, not in a twee way, but to create a contemporary Irish spa that

will really ‘wow’ even the most discerning spa aficionado.” Stretching over 10,000 sq ft, the spa is set over three floors with the thermal suite, offering a range of heating experiences including double and single seaweed baths, a dry floatation bed, Rasul Chamber, heated, mosaic, free standing stone loungers and a Salt Grotto. Meanwhile, two distinctly different relaxation rooms, The Light Relaxation Room and The Dark Relaxation Room, will offer guests a space in which to relax either pre- or post-treatment. The spa's second floor has six treatment rooms, while the private couple’s suite on the third floor is filled with natural light, courtesy of a large glazed atrium.

Monart Spa in Co Wexford is to launch a sister venue in the UK in partnership with Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate under the control of the Prince of Wales. The two have reportedly formed a partnership called Poundbury Spa with Dorset-based building firm CG Fry, which is developing a new town known as Poundbury on a 400-acre site owned by Duchy beside Dorchester.

SHANDON HOTEL AND SPA IN DONEGAL ANNOUNCES EXPANSION The Shandon Hotel & Spa in Co Donegal has announced 40 new jobs in a €2m expansion, just two years after reopening. The hotel was closed down during the recession. New owners stepped in to reopen the four-star hotel and spa in 2016 and have since expanded the property to 68 rooms. Now 40 new positions are being

created across the hotel including at the spa and a new hairdressing salon. “I believe this is going to be Donegal's best year for tourism and it is hugely significant for rural parts of the county like here at Marble Hill and what that does for the local economy,” said manager Carolynne Harrison.

A flagship venue named the Royal Pavilion will include 20 luxury apartments and an adjoining spa. Monart has established a new firm for the UK venture called Monart International, which a filing at the Companies Office states is receiving a loan from the existing Monart business to enable it to develop and operate a deluxe destination spa facility in the UK.

IN THE LINE OF DEFENCE Daily Defence Shield SPF 30 is a perfect base for make-up, with broad protection against environmental factors including UV rays, high energy visible light and pollution. We already know that stress is a silent ager, and so is sun damage. Now there is evidence to suggest that blue light from all the screens we’re exposed to on a daily basis may cause long-term ageing (a style thing!) as well. It’s not enough to protect our skin from UVA/UVB rays. The average person looks at their phone 157 times per day. This product offers broad protection against high energy visible light, the sort of harmful blue light emitted from the technology we so love. www.elemis.com

FLAWLESS SKIN DARE TO BARE ALL! When skin becomes dehydrated, it lacks softness, glow and suppleness. Insufficient moisture also ages skin. Guinot’s Hydrazone Corps provides protection and a heightened feeling of pleasure. It compensates the effects of tensio-activators, while intensely moisturising skin and softening it after a shower or bath. As light as a lotion and as effective as a cream, Hydrazone Corps provides daily comfort and well-being and leaves skin lightly perfumed and velvety.

hen it comes to the interior of your salon, you will want to get the most out of the space you have while also taking into account the needs of both your clients and staff. For exam-

ple, a stylish reception desk near the entrance that’s tidy and free from clutter will make a professional and helpful impact immediately.

SOTHYS SUCCESS

W

ow what a great few days we had! Chleo Enterprises were very proud to be a platinum sponsor presenting the Sothys brand at Spa Life 2018. It all kicked off on Sunday, 17 July with the SPA-RTY, a casual get-together in the beautiful spa at the Johnstown House Hotel where spa managers/directors and distributers enjoyed a few glasses of wine and some tasty nibbles! On Monday we had the opportunity to present Sothys to some of the most beautiful spas in Ireland using a ‘speed-dating’ process. It was great to meet with the key decision-makers face to face in such a professional and well organised environment. 2018 is absolutely the year for Sothys. It is new to the spa market in Ireland but it is present in some of the biggest spas and chains all over the world, so we have the experience. We received amazing feedback from the conference, not only from the directors of Spa Life who thanked us for presenting Sothys to such a high standard but from some of the best known spas in Ireland. It appears the market is crying out for something new, something luxurious and ultimately something 100% professional. Sothys is exclusive to beauty

salons and spas, you will never find it in a department store or pharmacy. We were really excited to launch the new award-winning Sothys Athletics line at Spa Life. It was developed to meet the skin’s needs before and after any exercise. Sothys chose tennis player Caroline Garcia, ranked No 1 in France and No 7 in the world, as brand ambassador.

‘It appears the market is crying out for something new, something luxurious and ultimately something 100% professional’ This innovative line consists of two treatments and two retail products targeted to men and women, whether you are an amateur or an experienced athlete it will ensure your body stays well balanced while conditioning the muscles and toning the skin. This line is a wonderful way to increase your client base and will offer a new

dimension to your treatment menu. It is ideal for a hotel or spa and can be used to link the leisure facilities, for example gym, golf, cycling etc, to the spa. It is also ideal for a beauty salon looking for new clients by forming for partnerships with local gyms, golf clubs etc. Overall the response has been amazing with appointments already in the diary to discuss Sothys in more detail. I can only say we were very proud to be involved in such an event and very proud to work with such a professional and unique brand.

SPA IRELAND 2018

SPA ESSENTIALS

Yes, there’s still space for the spa in the skincare industry, according to our resident Skin Nerd Jennifer Rock.

T

he whole world is pivoting towards becoming results-driven. Ingredients and techniques that used to be reserved for salons, clinics and cosmeceutical skincare brands are now readily available to all. You can get glycolic acid peels from your pharmacy, you can do your own EMS and the rise in people looking for serious skin treatments like micro-needling is astonishing. Does being results-driven mean that we should be leaving the spa-based treatments behind? In my opinion, definitely not. I am a big believer and regular receiver of both salon treatments geared towards change in the lower levels of the skin and spa treatments geared towards relaxation and skin soothing. Salon and clinical treatments work to stimulate collagen in the dermis, to raise the rate of skin cell proliferation, to bring about vasoconstriction to reduce redness and so on and so forth. All of these things improve our skin health, even if only temporarily, but they don’t work to improve our general health with regard to our skin. The skin is targeted by our bodies stress responses due to the brain-skin connection. It is widely believed that stress is a trigger for many inflammatory skin conditions such as

34

www.salonmagazine.ie

psoriasis, eczema and acne. Studies have shown that when humans are under duress, our skin’s barrier struggles to recover as quickly as it usually would and our wound healing becomes delayed. What does this mean? Well, without our barrier functioning at optimum level, we’re more susceptible to TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and airborne irritants. This is why those who are stressed may notice that their skin has dry patches or may see a general negative change in their skin. This is one place where the value in spa treatments lies for me: in their ability to relax, renew and reinvigorate. A spa treatment alone cannot tackle stress fully as it is not fixing the problems that are causing the stress, of course, but nonetheless, they are a valuable technique for destressing. YonKa facials are a personal favourite of mine, specifically the Excellence Code facial. It might be in the aromatic compress and its muscle-relaxing qualities, perhaps it’s in the mist with the Dr Lucas Championniere sprayer; regardless, it is fantastically soothing for both your skin and your soul. On top of that, it uses a lot of manual manipulation to reduce puffiness and tone the face. In my opinion, if you are to go to a

spa, you can’t leave without having a massage. We carry stress in our muscles so having a massage helps to relieve the physical manifestations of stress whilst giving a sensory experience too. The Lava Shell Full Body Massage is a massage carried out with heated lava shells being moved across the body by the therapist to bring down tension in the muscles. It is like being born again. Show me a person that has just had a Lava Shell Massage and is still feeling stressed and I’ll show you a liar. Another point to make is that spa treatments have had their game upped. Spa facials now include modalities such as tapotement and other forms of manual massage to provide different levels of treatment. Not only is your epidermis being soothed, nourished and hydrated, the treatment is aiding in the drainage of your lymphatic system and helping to tone your facial muscles. If you notice that your skin is worse when you are stressed, maybe it is time to invest a bit more in looking after all of you rather than the skin on its own. There is no harm in allocating some of your usual treatment budget to a spa facial or treatment and seeing how you and your skin feel afterwards.

THE AGES OF SKIN Your skincare routine should/needs to change depending on your age bracket, explains Lindsey Fenwick, education manager and skincare expert at Skinician.

Do you think people should change their skincare regime as they grow older? Yes, it’s extremely important that no matter what age we are we treat our skin in accordance to our skin conditions. However as we age there are some common changes that most of us will experience. The biological functions of the skin slow, causing increased wrinkle depth, dehydration, dullness and sensitivity.

PURIFYING TREATMENT Casmara’s Research Centre, drawing on the revolutionary drone technology and the pure microencapsulated oxygen, has formulated the Purifying Treatment range. It’s an exclusive purifying-oxygenating beauty plan that revolutionises facial skincare protocols with cosmetic drone technology and pure oxygen. Internally, it detoxifies the cells, oxygenates and energises them, prolonging their life and allowing them to function 100%. Suitable for all skin types including delicate, reactive and damaged skin. www.edenbeautygroup.com

What factors should a women in her 20s consider when choosing the right skincare products for her? I think of the 20s as the danger years! We have peak skin function so for most of us the skin in our 20s is as good as it gets. However this is also when most of the damage is done. I suggest a simple skin care routine that’s quick and easy. This means cleansing twice in the morning and twice in the evening, and toning and moisturising. Don’t forget your eyes as introducing an eye cream in your 20s will keep the eye’s looking bright and heathy.

What factors should a women in her 30s consider when choosing skincare products?

In my experience women in their 30s are the most time compressed so their skincare routine needs to be quick and made up of multifunctional products. I advise that they look for cleansing products with built in exfoliating benefits, that way they can cleanse and exfoliate in one easy step, the skin will look bright and fresh each and every day.

What factors should a women in her 40s consider when choosing skincare products? The skin is a record keeper and by your late 30s, early 40s the true signs of aging can be seen, I would advise building into your existing home care routine an exfoliator containing fruit acids and enzymes, this will melt away dry dull skin to reveal a smoother brighter more hydrated skin.

What factors should women who are in their 50s and above, consider when choosing skincare products? In your 50s your skin can begin to feel more fragile, you may experience increased dryness and feel the skin is beginning to slacken. The key is to look for products that will nourish, protect and repair. If you haven’t already, you need to introduce a rich night cream such as Skinician’s Advanced Restoring Night Cream, which contains regenacell to encourage the production of APT (aadenosine triphosphate).

BrowTastic Henna Brows offers the perfect alternative to eyebrow tinting, colouring both the hair and the skin to give you beautifully shaped brows whilst camouflaging gaps in over-tweezed or sparse brows. HAVE BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTED EYEBROWS FOR WEEKS AT A TIME. Filling in sparse brows is part of the daily make-up routine for many women who are not genetically blessed with a beautiful arch of hair above the brows. BrowTastic Henna offers the perfect alternative to eyebrow tinting without the use of ammonia or hydrogen peroxide to develop the eyebrow colour. BrowTastic Henna stains both the hair and the skin to create a background shadow that give clients that amazing powdered tattoo effect that you would get from semi-permanent tattooing. The result is the appearance of a fuller brow that lasts on average 2.5 to 3.5 weeks on the skin and up to six weeks on the actual hair. BrowTastic Henna Brows is the new go-to treatment for women who no longer want to fill in their brows, but don’t want a permanent tattoo either.

TOP TIPS TO HELP THERAPISTS APPLY A PERFECT TAN When it comes to tanning your client it’s not the tan that’s the most important part of their experience with you, says Karen Walker.

B

eing tanned is an intimate and personal experience, ensuring your client is happy and comfortable in their surroundings should always be your first priority. One of the things we advise all our Bronze Leaf therapists to do first and foremost is to ensure they have given their client proper preparation time and a comfortable area in which to get ready. Then when it comes to the tanning process there are a few things you can do to ensure your client gets the best Bronze Leaf experience.

1. TAN THE BACK FIRST

you can commit. Simply lightly dust over hands and feet. They should not look brown as you are spraying them.

This is especially important for first timers. By tanning the back first you give the client time to adjust to the scenario and become comfortable in the environment.

6. SHINS AND COLLAR BONE

The shin area on the leg and the collar bone don’t have ‘fat’ on them, which means they will always usually need another whizz after the second layer has been applied.

2. THE RIGHT DISTANCE

It is vital that when using Bronze Leaf products you keep around four inches from the skin. This will help the skin to properly absorb the tan at the right level.

7. SHOW YOUR CLIENT

When you have completed the tan, ask your client to move their brief line and they will be able to see the difference in skin tone.

3. LAYER UP

When applying the tan it’s much better to apply in two layers, this allows the first 25ml to be absorbed into the skin. By the time you are starting the second layer of 25ml the first should be dry.

8. SHOWERING

Depending on which Bronze Leaf product you use it’s important to properly advise your clients about their showering time. Take time to explain this process to them and ensure they understand the consequences of not showering at the right time.

4. DON’T WASTE YOUR PRODUCT

The body can only absorb 50ml of liquid at any one time, so any application over this is simply a waste of product. The skin should not look wet, if it has a wet look then there has been too much tan applied.

Bronze Leaf tan is created with the finest organic ingredients. For more information on how you can become a salon partner contact Karen Walker on tel: +44 7793 231 300, e: karen@bronze-leaf.com.

THE ART OF SAYING In business it can be hard to say no, but sometimes it’s necessary.

Liz McKeon gives some tips on the best way to do it.

A

salon manager has to make decisions based on what is best for the business, and if you are a person who is naturally open, this can be an unnatural response, especially if you want to avoid conflict or hurting another person’s feelings. It’s important to have boundaries which means occasionally saying no to requests, situations or staff that you can’t or don’t want to accommodate. I have prepared a few helpful tips in how to say no. Firstly, be sure you know where you stand first – do you want to say yes or no to the request? If you don’t fully understand what is being asked of you, ask for clarification. Be as brief as possible, giving a legitimate reason for your refusal, but avoid long elaborate explanations. Be sure to actually say the word ‘no’ when declining, as this has a lot more impact than phrases such as ‘I just don’t think so’. Emphasise the choice you have made by using phrases such as ‘I have decided not to’ or ‘I won’t’, rather than ‘I can’t’ or ‘I shouldn’t’, which sound weaker.

You may have to decline several times before the person hears you. It is not necessary to come up with a new explanation each time, just repeat the same original reason for declining. Saying ‘I’m sorry’ tends to compromise your basic right to say no. Acknowledge any feelings the other person may have a by commencing your decided outcome with ‘I know this will be a disappointment to you, but I won’t be able to...’. Beauty business expert Liz McKeon specialises in business development in the beauty, hair and spa industry. BOOSTING

YEAR-ROUND

JOE MCGLINCHEY

C

BUSINESS

ustomer confidence is one way of ensuring your customers come in all year round, says Joe McGlinchey, The Sunbed Association’s representative for Ireland.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, sunbed use is generally at its highest during the summer months. As soon as the sun comes out, it seems just about everyone wants to be tanned! For sure, there are pockets of people who only use sunbeds during the summer months, perhaps to ensure a base tan before they set off on their holiday or indeed to keep the tan going on their return! People working full time, chomping at the bit to be out in the sun whilst they are working indoors dreaming of access to the warmth and relaxation of the sun’s rays – evening salon openings are perfect for such people. But what can salons do to encourage use by these groups beyond the busy April to September tanning season? Although legislation restricts certain marketing activities, there are still

opportunities in this area and of course the overall salon experience is a factor in repeat visits. However, one key factor is customer confidence. Your staff’s knowledge on all aspects of your sunbed service and their ability to communicate this with confidence is paramount. Training all staff is an investment that will undoubtedly reap rewards for your business. The Sunbed Association offers a range of training options with preferential rates for members. For more information about responsible use of sunbeds and benefits of membership of The Sunbed Association visit www. sunbedassociation.org.uk or call 016 363 139 or email info@sunbedassociation.org.uk. WAXING CONCERNS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY EDUCATION

www.galligangroup.com

Angie Sanderson, lead educator at Sweet Squared for waxing brand wax:one, offers her advice on how to overcome client concerns and the importance of training when it comes to offering waxing treatments.

2018 COURSES

Waxing concerns – what are customers' biggest concerns when it comes to waxing? Firstly, pain. They may have had a bad experience in the past or have heard horror stories that have really put them off or made them very anxious walking in to that treatment room. Secondly, embarrassment, particularly for intimate waxing. It’s important to always make new clients feel comfortable, explain the treatment, at what stage underwear needs to be removed and why and provide a modesty towel. Finally, clients worry about breaking out in spots or getting ingrown hairs. This can happen with waxing, but it can be easily prevented so it’s important to ensure you’re using a good quality product and that your skills and technique are up to date so you’re providing the best possible treatment and removing hairs from the root and not snapping them due to poor technique. Make sure you provide appropriate aftercare advice (loose clothing, avoiding excessive sweating etc) and offer a good after care product like wax:one care, which contains salicylic acid that will help to gently exfoliate the skin so new hairs can grow straight up out of the skin’s surface. Training – how important is good training for therapists when it comes to waxing? Part of allaying client’s fears is making sure you don’t have any of your own. Technique and confidence are essential – once a client puts their trust in you to perform a waxing treatment (particularly intimate waxing), they’ll be long-term customers. If you’re nervous, tentative or embarrassed, you’re likely to not give a great treatment. If your skills aren’t up to scratch, you’re likely to not give a great treatment. If you’re new to waxing, it’s essential to carry out high quality, certified training not only so you can ensure you can get appropriate insurance, but so you’re learning the skills to be the best waxer you can be. This doesn’t come instantly so as well as your training, you must practise, practise, practise! You may also have been waxing for 10 years or only ever do a waxing treatment every now and then so don’t feel very confident, so updating your skills and learning new tips and tricks to make you even better is really important as you move through your career. The wax:one range is distributed in the UK and Ireland by Sweet Squared. Guild accredited training is available for both beginners and experienced therapists in all aspects of female and male waxing. TEMPTATIONS TO TREAT Always act professionally and with health and safety in mind, advises Emma Ryall, Aesthetic Training Academy Ireland.

Business is tough and a young business even tougher. While we are all aware of the dos and don’ts and can and cants in the industry, too often we have witnessed both therapists and clients alike failing to follow procedures. In a bid to boost weekly figures, health and safety standards lapse resulting in negligence. Toying with the idea of a client willing to sign a waiver to proceed with treatment without a patch test, or the therapist or proprietor who proceeds, I am perplexed as to who is more foolish. I always follow my code of ethics as well as health and safety standards by politely declining and explain precisely why. There are two reasons. The first, which many do not know is that a waiver typically will not stand up in court. It is just not worth the paper it’s written on. Secondly, if any damage is done to a client’s face or body, that damage alone is worse than any court case. Remember, you do not have to treat everyone who visits you. A consultation is a great way to explain the treatment, costs involved, ensure your client is suitable, carry out necessary patch tests and to build a relationship with said client. Following that, an agreement is made between you and your client to proceed or not proceed. It may be either party who do not wish to continue. Remember the onus is not always on the client to give the go ahead.

I say both parties because it’s not a party when only one is involved (well perhaps a dull one). You need your client to work with you, follow your guidelines and advice throughout the series of treatments to ensure optimum health and safety as well as results. Like any relationship, if one doesn’t come to the party and co-operate you will have problems. Reverting back to the time of consultation, perhaps it’s been a quiet week, figures are low. Your client has had this treatment before at another clinic, what could possibly go wrong? Famous last words. Machines vary, equipment varies, therapist’s skills and knowledge vary. The skin is an ever-evolving organ, requiring different treatment methods and actions at various stages of the year or even week. A patch test allows you to set the parameters and understand the client’s response, comfort level and expectations. Take your time, wait for your client to cooperate with you. When your client visits for treatment the week after, with procedures in place, you know you have acted professionally and safely. Your client will respect you for this. Those who don’t, perhaps don’t deserve to be treated by you.
