Q Now that I’ve started to exercise regularly, is there anything that can help me cut down on washing my hair?

If dry skin is the bane of your existence and you’ve exhausted your options, consider something simpler and costefective. Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, a Torontobased dermatologist and the author of Beyond Soap, recommends body oils. “For the body, my favourites are virgin coconut oil and sunflower-seed oil,” she says. Oils improve the skin barrier that helps hold in moisture without being too heavy. If the idea of a bow is a little too precious for you, Jukka recommends wrapping a small lock of your hair around the base and securing it with a bobby pin. “It’s a nice finishing touch to any kind of ponytail,” he says.

After applying a heat protectant and a smoothing cream to increase shine and help tame flyaways, blow-dry clean hair while still damp. “For extra volume, blow-dry upside down using a boarbristle brush,” says Jukka. Finish by smoothing the ends with the brush.

Create a centre or side part, then separate a section at the crown to tease; Jukka calls this section the triangle, with the base of it facing the front of your head. (If you have thin, oily or slippery hair, use a volumizing powder to absorb oil and add texture.) Place a brush or finetooth comb about halfway between your roots and your hand, then stroke downward toward the scalp.

Once you have a cushion of hair at the base of the section, apply hairspray, then gently smooth your locks with a paddle brush, using enough pressure to hide the teased area without flattening it. Secure your tresses into a ponytail at the nape of your neck with a clear elastic.

There’s nothing more important than the sisterhood of friends. Where would we be without our gal pals? Lost. We’d be cast adrift without our anchor, our North Star. That unconditionally loving, nonjudgmental circle of friends who supply endless amounts of support, empathy and laughs (and, let’s be honest, Chardonnay), they get it—they get us. In fact, in the early part of the 20th century, the psychological theorist Alfred Adler called the creation of friendships one of the three vital tasks of life. He said—and successive theorists have agreed—that one of the most fundamental tasks RI DQ\ SHUVRQÂśV OLIH LV WR ÂżQG EHORQJLQJ Âł:KR DP ," +RZ GR , ÂżW LQ"´ 7KHVH DUH WKH TXHVWLRQV DQVZHUHG E\ ÂżQGLQJ PHDQLQJIXO connection. None of us could survive solo; we need others, both practically and personally. From the earliest stages of life, mere babes in arms, we’re psychologically and physiologically hardwired for social connection. Encoded into our DNA is the circuitry we need to attune to others, to respond, to cooperate. To belong. This social connection not only ensures our survival but also enriches our lives. So that means strong friendships are central to robust and resilient mental health. Just how strong is your circle? That’s a sensitive question, isn’t it? After all, the sisterhood is sacred. Some of our friendships need to be recharged; we have to plug in and make an investment to bring them back to life. Occasionally, we must take stock and do a complete friendship reboot. Here’s FRIEND, an acronym I sometimes use as a litmus test. If you hold this checklist up to your posse, do all of the boxes get ticked? 1. FAITHFUL No, that

doesn’t mean your BFF isn’t allowed to “cheat� on you by seeing other friends but, rather, that she faithfully adheres to the sisterhood code: having your back and keeping your secrets. What you say in the cone of silence stays there. Period.

3. INSPIRING Her words and deeds and the way she moves in the world inspire you to do better and be better. After spending time with her, you’re charged up to take on new projects and attain new goals.

4. ETHICAL A good friend is one who supports you in doing the right thing, not the easy thing. She has integrity and makes sure you maintain yours, too. 5. NONJUDGMENTAL She loves your imperfect self, through your glorious moments and your unfortunate missteps. She may not always agree with your choices, and she’ll certainly hold a mirror up (see Ethical, above), but she won’t judge you or hold you in contempt.

6. DEPENDABLE If she says she’s going to be there, she is. You can count on that. She doesn’t show up just some of the time but every time.

That’s how long this remarkable dinner club from rural Saskatchewan has been sharing meals and making memories. The dishes “always turn out,” says Lloyd Hunchak, adding that the evenings often stretch into the wee hours, and the bonds forged have withstood the test of time.

Snapshots of the supper club over the years reveal decades of laughter, camaraderie and lots and lots of delicious food.

The couples, who grew up in the same area, cemented their friendship in the 1980s, when the men played in a twilight baseball league and the families travelled to tournaments around the province. In the ’90s, Ed and Carol Thorsteinson realized, “We really like these people, but we don’t connect often enough; we always see one another at some event,” says Carol. They wondered if a dinner club would give the group a chance to visit more. So Carol asked Elaine Hunchak, and Elaine and Lloyd loved the idea. Then, she called Claire and Gordie Melnyk, who also accepted. The next day, Carol and Elaine walked over to the school where Vicky Krysak was teaching; Vicky and her hubby, Peter, didn’t need convincing—they were in, too. The group of eight was soon meeting every month, rotating dinners at each couple’s house with a ¿IWK JHW WRJHWKHU DV D PHDO RXW “Carol is a really good organizer, and she also loves to orchestrate fun,” says Claire. But the group relies on one another for more than just fun and games; they’re there through life’s ups and downs. When Vicky’s mother passed away, the group rallied. “Family was arriving and I was overwhelmed with grief as well as arranging the funeral and having to feed our large clan,â€? says Vicky. “There was a knock at our door and there stood our dinner-club friends with a complete meal for the whole family—all 19 of us!â€? They also worked quietly

behind the scenes at the reception, setting up tables, adding centrepieces, helping serve the meal and cleaning up afterward. “I still get teary thinking about that very kind and thoughtful gesture,â€? says Vicky. “It opened up my heart to remember to do the same for others.â€? Going around the table— they’ve gathered together to be interviewed for this story via Skype—each friend attests to his or her gratitude for the group, but pinpointing exactly what has PDGH LW ODVW SURYHV WR EH GL̇FXOW to put into words. “We just always get along,â€? says Lloyd. “I don’t think there’s a group like this anywhere else in the world.â€? There’s some modest dissent to Lloyd’s comment, but he insists this octet is unique, and Claire agrees. “There are many groups that start a dinner club and fail,â€? she says. “Somehow, we’ve not only continued but also been consistent!â€? Elaine does admit that, sometimes, when the date for dinner rolls around, there’s hesitation (especially when the temperature drops to -30°C). “But once we’re together, they comfort me and make me laugh, and I walk away thinking, That’s exactly what I needed. â€? “We get really good discussions going, covering every and any topic,â€? says Carol. “The

group is so at ease that no one is afraid of rejection or reprimand for voicing an opinion—plus, we know that anything we say won’t be shared outside the group.� And let’s not forget the food. The host couple provides a meat dish, plus salad, bread, beverages and entertainment; another brings the vegetable side; someone brings the potato dish; and somebody, the dessert. And they’re committed to always trying new recipes (we’re happy to hear they’ve tried plenty from Canadian Living). “There’s occasional repetition, but it’s rare,� says Claire. That’s saying something, because if you do the math, these people have shared about 300 meals over 25 years, not including special events such as birthdays and weddings. It’s clear, though, that supper is secondary. Carol says that one reason she and Ed started the group was to ensure that life didn’t just pass by; they wanted to spend it with people they enjoyed. That wisdom isn’t lost on the others. “Laughter is good for the soul, and apparently for the heart,� says Elaine. “It’s a powerful medicine, and we do a lot of laughing.� That sounds like the secret ingredient for not only a successful dinner group but also for friendship and a good life—not surprisingly, these friends are happy to share it.

Q

Lately, I’ve been noticing more of my hair falling out than usual. What could be causing it?

Dr. Beach says “It’s normal to shed hair daily, such as 50 to 100 strands when grooming it. However, amounts that consistently exceed that level may be a symptom of an underlying problem known as telogen effluvium. Most commonly, large amounts of hair shedding in women can be attributed to iron deficiency acquired from menstrual blood loss or a relative insuiciency in the protein ferritin, which is involved in iron stores; when present, this can be improved with daily iron supplementation. Other culprits can include thyroid imbalance or a deficiency of vitamin B12. Several social factors can contribute to hair shedding, too, including significant stressors like bankruptcy, bereavement or a relationship breakup. There are also medications that can contribute to hair shedding, so one’s medications should be reviewed for this uncommon side-efect. A physical trauma or illness can also induce hair loss, which is typically delayed by about three months after the particular event. When the trigger is identified, correction of it can help hair shedding lessen or stabilize after three to six months.”

I have a bowel movement every other day. Does that mean I’m constipated?

Dr. Zenlea says “You’re not constipated if this represents your regular schedule. When it comes to bowel movements, each person is unique, and what’s normal for one person may not be normal for another. You should be concerned when there’s a sustained change to your normal routine or when there are associated symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, a feeling of constipation or a sense of incomplete evacuation or blood in the stool. A variety of circumstances can cause constipation, including thyroid problems or electrolyte levels, but sometimes the reason is unknown. Since colon cancer can also cause changes, it’s important to speak with your doctor if there’s a sudden change in your bowel movements. In addition to eating a healthy diet that includes fibre-rich foods, reducing stress, exercising and drinking lots of water will help promote regular healthy bowel movements.”

Preheat oven to 325°F. Mist 15- x 10-inch baking sheet with cooking spray; line with parchment paper, leaving overhang. In microwaveable bowl, microwave almond butter and salt on high until almond butter is melted, about 45 seconds. Let cool slightly. Stir in honey until smooth. In large bowl, combine granola, pepitas, nuts and cranberries; stir in almond butter mixture until coated. Scrape into prepared pan; cover with parchment paper. This doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym every day, but you do need to be consistent, she says. “Maybe you do yoga twice a week or a heavy boot-camp class on the weekend and, throughout the week, you ride your bike to work—all that exercise adds up. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO A BREAST SELF-EXAM? Dr. Ruth Heisey, chief of family medicine at Toronto’s Women’s College Hospital, says, “It’s important to know your breasts so you can easily detect changes. Examine your breasts every two to three months during showering or bathing, being sure to cover all of the tissue, including up to the collarbone and into the armpit, using the flat part of your fingers—not your fingertips, which are too sensitive. You’re feeling for lumps or bumps in the breast or armpit or any persistent thickenings or fullness present on one side only. Look in the mirror while drying off; check for indentations, significant changes in the shape of the breast, any one-sided nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing, or crusting or thickening of the nipple and areola. Avoid examining your breasts around the time of your period, when they tend to feel fuller and lumpier. If you notice any changes, visit your health-care provider and discuss whether imaging should be performed. Some women with relatives with breast and/or ovarian cancer may be at a substantially higher risk for both cancers and should consider genetic testing and high-risk screenings (mammogram and MRI) and, for those who are found to carry a genetic mutation, possibly preventive surgeries.

Although there are no studies showing a direct link between household chemicals and cancer, some experts recommend erring on the side of caution. “This revolves around the precautionary principle,â€? says DeCoteau. “If something has not yet been proven safe, exercise caution or avoid wherever possible.â€? According to the Environmental Defence organization, Canadians are exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in their household-cleaning and personal-care products that may be linked to breast cancer, among other diseases and disorders. The organization is lobbying for full ingredient disclosure and health-warning labels to be mandatory on product packaging so consumers can make informed purchasing decisions. In the meantime, consider incorporating HFR FHUWLÂżHG VRDSV VSUD\V DQG FOHDQHUV and personal-care products into your routines, where possible. Sometimes, my breasts are really sore. Is that normal? Breast tenderness is common around menstruation and, generally, not cause for concern. But what if you experience discomfort not related to your menstrual F\FOH" Âł%UHDVW SDLQ LVQЧW DQ LQGLFDWRU RI breast cancer,â€? says Dr. Grunfeld. Pain in the breast area is often caused by other structures in the chest and around the breast, such as the muscles, she says. Trying a new move in yoga class or even carrying a heavy purse on the same shoulder every day can lead to strain in the muscles and the cartilage under your breasts, resulting in some discomfort. If the problem is severe and persists, you should check with your doctor to rule out other potential medical concerns—hormonal changes that may require treatment.

Is squishing my breasts into a sports bra bad for them? There’s no reason to think any style or shape of bra is better than another or that bras are related to the health of your breasts, says Dr. Grunfeld. But your bra can play into how your breasts feel. “Pain

The skin on your chest is delicate and prone to signs of aging, including age spots and wrinkles, so it should be treated with care.

Do I need a mammogram?

$OWKRXJK WKH EHQHÂżWV RI PDPPRJUDSK\ have been hotly debated in recent years, due in part to overdiagnosis, regular screening is recommended. “We still feel WKDW WKH EHQHÂżWV IRU WKH LQGLYLGXDO ZRPDQ outweigh the risks,â€? says Dr. Grunfeld, referring to the possibility of needing additional testing, such as breast biopsies, which can cause added stress. Canadian women of average risk between the ages of 50 and 69 should have a mammogram every two years. Mammography for women under 50 is less reliable (because younger women tend to have denser breast tissue, ZKLFK PDNHV LW PRUH GL̇FXOW WR GHWHFW OXPSV EXW LI \RXЧUH FRQVLGHUHG KLJK ULVN (because of a strong family history or the presence of certain gene mutations, for example), you and your doctor can discuss the possibility of an early or more intensive screening program.

Cancer Society. This could involve genetic testing, as well as looking at an individual’s risk factors in more detail as a determination of risk and how often screening should occur. “We’re going to see a shift to more informed consent; women are having this conversation with their doctors or nurse SUDFWLWLRQHUV VR WKH\ NQRZ WKH EHQHÂżWV and limitations of screening,â€? he says. In the meantime, take good care of your body, including your breasts, and talk to your doctor about your risks for breast cancer, especially if you have a family history. “That’s the best thing you can do to reduce your risk,â€? says Chirrey.

MATERIALS • About 80 various-size PINECONES • 20-litre BUCKET • 8 litres WATER • 4 litres BLEACH • 1 or 2 BRICKS or other disposable heavy objects • RUBBER GLOVES • CARDBOARD • Hot GLUE GUN • 10-inch foam WREATH FORM

HOW TO

1 Working in a well-ventilated area, place the

pinecones in the bucket. Pour the water into the bucket, then carefully add the bleach.

2 Place the brick on top of the pinecones to keep

them submerged. Leave to soak for about 20 hours; they’ll eventually begin to deteriorate, so check periodically, starting at the 12-hour mark.

Wearing rubber gloves, remove the brick and the pinecones. Lay the pinecones out to dry on a piece of cardboard outdoors or in a warm sheltered spot like a garage or a shed. (Pinecones close up when wet but will open again as they dry, which may take up to a week, depending on the temperature.)

4 Once the pinecones are fully dry, use the glue

gun to attach the largest ones to the outside perimeter of the wreath form. Next, glue the medium-size pinecones along the middle of the wreath form, then the smallest specimens along the inside perimeter. Fill in any gaps with the remaining pinecones. Inspired by celestial views, Hurley searched high and low for the right wallpaper. “I was speciďŹ cally looking for a fresh blue backdrop,â€? says the designer, who found the perfect ďŹ t in a Thibaut paper. Taking the treatment up to the ceiling cofer “envelops the space, making it feel cozy and decadent.â€?

To maintain a cohesive feel, Hurley restricted the palette to the hues found within the wallpaper: sky blue, moss green, golden yellow and cranberry red. The dark mauve found its way into the toss cushions and throws as dusty rose and pale pink, “so it matches, but it’s not too matchy-matchy,� explains the designer.

“I balanced the luxurious wallpaper with simple and contemporary pieces, such as the tailored sectional, the table lamps and the rug,� says Hurley. To ofset the opulence of the homeowners’ original solid brass sconces, she employed graphic modern artwork (gold zippers arranged in chevron patterns behind glass).

“They were too encompassing,â€? says Hurley of the previous ornate silk drapes. Stripping away much of their volume, plus the valances, gave the custom pieces new life. Hurley treated the iridescent yellow as a neutral gold tone and brought in accents in the ďŹ nish to tie into the updated scheme.
