introduction For this brief I have to represent the Earth to life in out of space, I have to recreate the golden record in my own way. I will do this by going through different stages before I get to my final outcomes. These stages will be, research, development, refinement, and then my final outcomes. First I will research into different artists, designers, animators, the golden record, and different styles of designs. These will all help as influences and help create ideas towards my final outcomes to get started with my development stage. I will annotate and talk about other peoples work identifying why they represent the Earth and why I have chose to document them in my research. I will take their techniques into consideration to help with my own work and use their work to show me what is effective. Once I have finished with my research stage I will then move onto thinking about ideas for my development. I will record these ideas and experiment with them in my development stage.

techniques that I have looked at in my research and experiment with different programs to see what designs I can create. I will try out a few ideas and refine the ones I like. The refining stage will be taking the successful designs further by trying more with them. I will experiment with the layouts, typefaces, colours, tools used and anything else that could be improved to make it into a final piece. I want my final to be different to the golden record and to be effective, representing the earth well. My final outcomes. They will need to represent the earth making it clear for someone that knows nothing about earth. I will make them clear but effective. By going through all these stages it helps to get to my final outcome as I can see what is effective. I can also look and try new techniques out.

My development stage is the part where I will try my ideas out to see if they are effective or if they don’t quite work how I imagined them to. I will try using many page 2

the golden record http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/images/golden_record_cover.gif

The golden record is a 12 inch gold plated copper disk, that contains many different sounds and images on it. It contains a whole lot of information to represent the Earth and the people on it. It was created to be sent up into space to be out there in case of any extraterrestrial contact, this is so that if the record is found in the future the space people who discover it can play the record to enable them to see what earth is like and to be able to judge us before they enter, it was made to show that we are friendly and do not mean any harm to the discoverers of this record. It also gives them knowledge about us, shows them what type of things earth offers and does, therefore they get an understanding of who we are and our purpose.

involved printed messages from President Carter and U.N. Secretary general Waldheim. They have put this out there to see if there is any other life out in space and to see if we can contact them. But the record can tell them about us and what our planet is like, so that they do not feel threatened by our planet.

The record has 115 images on it, to show images from earth and of the people on it. It also has a range of natural sounds such as wind, birds, and other animals they chose to involve on the record. To show that the Earth is multicultural they added musical selections, and greetings spoken from the people of earth in 55 different languages. They also

These are the symbols that are found on the Golden Record. These are put onto the record to symbolise what is on the record. The symbols represent what each element means and what is included on the record. On the record there is music, sounds, images and videos to represent the Earth. By offering these options of been able to read the record there is more chance of the life in space to be able to communicate with us and understand what we are saying. This has inspired me by reminding me another way of communicating through symbols and signs. It shows how we can communicate to extraterrestrial life in space, it shows that you have to offer options, as we don’t know the target audience, we don’t know if they understand our languages, so we have offered images, sounds, music and symbols to give options in hope that they understand one of them. It is opened up to many different possibilities in order to communicate, which I find interesting and something that I can relate to when think about my ideas for this brief.

the last pictures This was an art/science project done by Trevor Paglen and presented by creative time. There was many other people working along side on this project as well. The last pictures of Earth is a silicon disc in a gold plated shell, that has 100 photographs of the earth on it. It has been designed to mark one of the space crafts, they wanted a disc that could visually record a contemporary historical moment. They did this by collecting images to document this moment. It took them 5 whole years to interview people such as artists, scientists, philosophers and anthropologists so that they could decide what cultural movement it should be. When they had decided they went through tasks to put the record together, they had to decided which images to put onto the disk, what to research, what materials to use for the disc, and how they would send it up to space. I watched “The last pictures project video” to learn more about the project and to see how they put it all together. I wanted to see what the people involved had to say about the project and get a feel for how they thought about creating something for out

of earth. I wanted to see what their perspective was of the disc and why they decided to put it together in the first place. First it introduces you to Trevor Paglen, he talks about the disc and introduces us to the project. According to Paglen the disc is “...a collection of images that might explain something about why these space crafts are there and maybe explain something about what happened to the people that made them and why the people that made them are not there any more”. It shows that he is wanting to show the life in outer space a movement from earth, to tell a story about a certain movement. It’s almost like a time capsule of someone’s life, where they can find out important movements at that time and it helps them to understand what was going on at that time on earth. It explains how earth has changed over the years as to why the people are not around anymore. It gives them a piece of earth to document and already know something about. They are explaining how earth works. And it’s all about how the future is seen and the changes.

Nato Thompson who is the Chief curator of the creative time says that it’s “so powerful for art to give to the world” this shows how art can document and show important movements on earth and can be put out there into space for hopefully one day other life to see. It shows how we can communicate visually through images to show a movement and tell a story. This inspires me for my work because it shows how I can be visual to communicate and that I can tell a story through photographs. Through watching this video I was introduced to other people on this project and their thoughts were very interesting. There were many more thoughts but the ones I have wrote I found most relevant. Finally Paglen states that the disc is a “document of the historical movement” and that it is “one persons view, what the world might look like at this particular moment”. This shows that he has not done it based on the whole world because he would not be able to design from everyone in the worlds perspective and it’s a personal documentation to the people that have worked on it. page 8

I found this very interesting to look at as it is very similar to the Golden Record, however it has less information on the disc and it is not documenting the whole Earth but one contemporary historical movement. It shows how they have done an artistic project to send to space and have done a visual project to communicate with. It has shown me that I can be pick a certain movement or a few things that represents earth and that it doesn’t have to be everything about the world for life in space to understand. I can tell a story through just images, and I can choose what I want to share with life out of space but I need to think carefully about the information I use. It has also shown me that involving other people in your project can help, as Trevor Paglen talked to people and studied what he should put on the disc before he made his mind up. This is a design especially made for space and it has shown me all the steps you need to go through to do so.

time capsule I wanted to look at time capsules as this is another way of recording ones life. It records a families moments from their time and creates a story about their lives on this earth. The information in the jar is put together to create a visual explanation of what this family were like and to tell their story. Helps put together a view of what the earth was like at the time they were living due to the findings of the jar, it helps people understand a time from history and capture a historical moment from someone’s lives. People often leave time capsules in hope for other people to find them so that they can show how they used to live and that the people from the future can see how times have changed, they can get a view of what life used to be like and see the different generations that have lived before them. It’s a fun way to show someone about your life, and hope that someone can see your story after you have passed. You can learn someone in the future about a snippet from the past. This reminds me of the golden record as it is a way of putting information out there in hope that someone will find it, there is no target audience other than people of the future, for the golden record they hope

for out of space life to find it therefore they know nothing about there target audience and have to hope that they are able to communicate and with this time capsule it is buried or put somewhere in the hope that one day someone will dig it up and find it, they too know nothing about their target audience. These are both put out there in hope of being found. They both capture a time from history and a part of the world that can tell a story to anyone from the future or that knows nothing about earth. The time capsule has a personal take of telling a story as it is about a families life. They would involve objects, personal things, and photographs to do with their lives to tell their story, to show how they live and who they are. The time capsule would tell someone that knew nothing about them a story about their life and introduce you to the family.

you get a feel for what the family is like. The photograph makes it more real. They have used more than one jar which is a nice idea. It shows the jars could of been used for different things, or for the different members of the family. I could maybe use a variety of different jars for my final outcome to capture different parts of the earth. Overall I like this time capsule idea as it tells a story in a different way to the golden record. It makes it more personal and looks just as presentable. This is a way that I could redesign the golden record and capture a historical moment and represent the earth.

I love the way it has been put into a big glass jar and set out, this is something I can take into consideration if I use this idea for my final outcome. The photo of the family on the front of the jar in a nice effect as it introduces you to them straight away and page 10

time capsule I wanted to look at different types of time capsules to see how they have been put together differently and how they have been made. This helps me to look at how I can put a time capsule together for my final outcome if I decide to do so. This would hold a lot more information about a families life, a historical moment, or information to represent the earth. This could be a way of representing earth, it would be left on earth as something for the aliens to find if they ever made contact with earth, and they could find out all about us, as this would be filled with information, photographs, and anything to do with the earth. It would be a more personal way of creating a golden record as they can touch the information, and see it how its presented on earth. They would get a feel of what earth is like and how information is shared on earth whilst telling them a story it is also representing the techniques we use.

they take the information out of it, and how all the information inside links together. A time capsule tells a story from that time of the peoples lives and introduces you to a time learning you about something personal. I could do a variety of time capsules some that are more personal to help the life from out of space see how different people live and some more about the earth it’s self introducing them to the bigger picture and how the planet works as a whole. Overall I like the time capsule idea as it is a personal way of redesigning the golden record and a different way of introducing the life from outer space to life on earth.

It shows me how I will have to think carefully how I present my time capsule and put it all together. I will have to lay the information presentable inside so that it tells the story in the way page 11

andy warhol I looked at Andy Warhol as he left time capsules of his belongings in boxes so that when he died they were left for people to discover. There was a mixture of materials and objects discovered in the boxes that he left. According to Benjamin Liu “It’s not like he would just throw stuff in. It was, like, this goes here, this goes there.” Benjamin Liu was the personal assistant of Andy Warhol. It shows how he meant to put certain objects together and place them in the way he did. He went through a selection process of what he was putting in the boxes. To tell a story? Some boxes included his art work where as others had more personal belongings in them. Some of the things found were very odd. The belongings found in the boxes were things such as, fan letters, junk mail, freebie LPs, a lump of concrete, flyers from galleries, gallery invitation cards, unopened letters, eccentric pornographic assemblages by Warhol’s friends, thousands of used postage stamps, packets of sweets, unopened Campbell’s soup tins, solicitations for work, toenail clippings, dead ants, a mummified foot, used condoms and some original completed pieces by Warhol that he chose

not to exhibit for some reason. These objects all differ and it makes you wonder why he left these in the time capsule. It shows a lot about his character and that he was a very eccentric man. It also explains to people that didn’t know him, that he was an artist and was into art at the time of his existence. These boxes are almost like pieces of art themselves. They can be left for people that didn’t know him and explain about his life. It shows what was around at the time, and can give you an idea of what time he was from. The people he associated with and what type of lifestyle he had as a person because of the material he has left behind. The boxes are plain cardboard boxes, taped shut and marked with a number. It shows that there is an order to the boxes in which he wanted them to be opened which can explain that they tell a story in this order. Or maybe go from the oldest to the newest parts of his life. It shows how he focussed less on the outside of the box and more on the content. He didn’t want to give anything away with the outside of the box, this was all an element of surprise? He has done it so that we do not know what we are going to find inside

the boxes. It is an intriguing way of getting his audiences attention. If people can’t see what is inside sometimes it makes them want to find out more, it has a sense of mystery to it. Because the boxes are related to Warhol and were found in his possession people that are fans of his want to find out what he has left behind. His way of working was modern, out of the ordinary, wacky and people loved his work, therefore they will of been excited to see him living on through the boxes of art. It is another piece of art he has left behind for people to see. This shows me how I have to take the contents importantly and take how I set them out into consideration. They have to work together and look visually pleasing. The outside also has to be taken into consideration. I can leave the outside and concrete on the inside, but put something small enough to make the inside seem appealing. Overall I like Warhol’s idea of the time capsule as it is intriguing and effective to the audience. The contents are all different but work well as they relate to him personally and tell a story about his life and that time of his existence. page 12

page 13

alan kitching I looked at Alan Kitching’s typography designs as I wanted to see how he creates it and uses it to make it successful. This is one of his designs. It shows how he has used typography to build up an image of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, this is to connect the typography to the image. It is a clever way to communicate an image through words and to make the typeface visually effective by expressing an image using the letters. The letters have been arranged to make up the image. This represents the Earth as it is representing a main attraction of one of the capital cities. It shows me a different way of representing the cities and places around the Earth and that typography can build up an image. It is a more quirky way of designing rather than just taking photograph of the attraction, it shows new techniques and links the words and image together successfully. He uses type to express his designs and to communicate his messages across to his audiences. Typography is a good way to represent the Earth as it can be made in many different ways such as making it out of the materials from the Earth

or making an image up out of typography to represent the Earth and to make a statement. Type can also by used to express and explain information about the Earth to communicate facts and tell a story about the Earth and the people on it. The colours of this piece also represent the country as these are the colours from the French flag, this is another way to link the image to its purpose. Colours are an important factor of a design and this is something I can consider when creating my final design. Overall I think this design is modern and works well to represent the country. It also represents the world and a good design practise. This is a technique I can consider when creating my final outcomes and doing my experimentation stage.

alfred leete Whilst looking in the Thames and Hudson book I came across Leete’s famous world war one poster. This was designed to get people to recruit to the army and to join up to fight for their country. This is a very successful advertisement and it plays a lot on the persuasive side of advertising. It uses the word “you” making it personal and speaking directly to it’s audience. By making an advertisement personal it makes it more appealing and the audience. They feel like it is speaking to them as an individual it makes them feel special like it only applies to them, this is why it is so affective. It shows how advertising and poster design had a big impact in this generation. I choose to involve this poster as I believe it represents a big part of the world and documents an important part of our history in advertising and from how the world has moved and changed. It shows what was happening in the world at the time and it captures a historical movement. It shows me how I can capture historical movements and show them to life from outer space to show them about Earth and how we change. The poster it’s self is dated and you can tell that it is from a long time ago with the

colours being faded and the techniques used. It also shows how advertising has moved on from the past. I wanted to take a look back on some of the important moments of the world in design and how it represents the earth. It shows who was around at this time. For my final outcomes I will take the idea of capturing moments of Earth and showing this to life that we think knows nothing. I will have to tell a story and use techniques that apply to them. With this poster it is simple but effective. It stands out and gets the message across clearly and quickly. At this time people understand the message and will react on how it makes them feel. Overall I think this piece of design was very effective and still is to this day. The techniques used are relevant and work well together. I will learn from these techniques and use them when experimenting to help to get to my final outcomes.

advertising http://www.ads-ngo.com/wp-content/gallery/holidays_destination/reporters2.jpg

Advertising is a big part of our world and we wouldn’t be able to live our lives without it. It informs us about new trends, materials, objects and places, it tells us about everything new and persuades us how to live our lives. This is something the golden record doesn’t cover, and advertising is one of the ways in how earth functions and works. I could show the life in outer space all about advertising and how we use it here on earth. I could also use advertising to show the aliens earth its self. Advertising is a persuading method that allows companies to show consumers their products, and to persuade them to spend money on the products they offer. Advertising is a way in which the world makes money and how companies stay a float. A company wouldn’t exist if it didn’t have the advertising it needed as there would be no money going into it, because no one would no about it. Out of space we assume the life knows nothing about earth therefore I could advertise the earth to them, show them all about earth and how we use it. Advertising is a good way to introduce someone to something they have never seen before. There are many different advertising techniques used. This is an explicit advertisement

as it is a clear statement as to what it is advertising. It is for a travel agents and is selling a holiday to the public. This is a simple message and straight away the audience knows what is being advertised to them, they have the details in front of them. It is a simple way to intrigue an audience as you get them with the facts, and a picture, a straight forward way of advertising. This is the easiest type of advertising as it is better for the audience to understand in faster circumstances. I think this is a more tedious way of advertising as it doesn’t need to hold your attention for long for you to know what it is stating, it hasn’t got anything out of the ordinary going on and this is the type of advertisement that won’t stay in my head. I find these advertisements less interesting and this is a advertising method used for important messages that need to be put across straight away. I would try to stay away from this type of advertisement unless needed because I do not think it is a clever way to engage with my audience.

page 16

advertising http://images.viralnova.com/000/022/440/print-ads-13.jpg

I looked at a range of advertisements to get an idea of techniques used and to see what types of advertising I could use to fill my jar or to create for my final outcomes.

not as fighters, growing up in a war inflicted world. They have used a photograph to make it realistic to show that it’s really happening and these children are real.

This is an implicit advertisement as the meaning is not directly expressed. It has a hidden meaning, the advertisement takes more thought as to what it is trying to communicate to it’s audience. It’s asking a serious question, with an answer that wouldn’t normally be an option, it makes you think. It shows how the world is harsh and children are now having to be armed with guns to protect themselves. It has a stern feeling to it, to show that it is a serious matter and not a spoof advertisement. It is showing that this is the harsh reality that really happens. It’s pointing out how they take away the children’s story because of the “bottle of wine” but they are arming children with weapons to protect themselves? It is showing how America is going mad, and how children have to grow up too fast. This advert is very adult like, the children do not look like they are having fun, it is showing realism. The mood is dark and dreary to set a sorrowful scene, morning deaths and how children should be kept as innocent and

These techniques are more affective as they hit people with a harder message. They are advertisements that stick in peoples heads, they hold the audiences attentions for longer than two seconds. Because you have to think about the meaning it makes sink in and the message is embedded into the brain. The text and photo work together to portray the message in a clever way. It doesn’t need a lot of type for you to understand as the image is the main focus, but it has enough type to explain the meaning. For my advertisements I will use implicit adverts and techniques like these as it is a more effective way of advertising and they will have deeper meanings to offer. It also displays a better view of what advertising is like today.

advertising For this type of advertisement I wanted to look at how advertising is incorporated on packaging and used in different ways to inform people. I wanted to discover other clever techniques of how to advertise and how it can be done. This will help me see how I can look into making the outside of my jars presentable if I used these as my final outcome, and how the outside can also be just as informative as the inside. This is about drink driving and it is incorporated into the way of opening the product to warn the consumer of what can happen if people drink and drive. The car being on the front of the bottle cap means that when it is opened it dints showing that this is what would happen if a crash took place, it is a clever way of demonstrating the impact of a crash caused by drink driving and it is incorporated onto the item that causes it to remind the consumers not to do it. It is an appropriate place to put this advert and it shows how the placement of advertisements is also something that needs to be well throughout for a successful ad campaign. By having it on the beer bottle itself it is a simple reminder and constantly warning the person of the harsh reality of drink driving and how it can

be prevented from happening. On the inside of the cap it reads “don’t drink and drive” stating why the car is on the front of the bottle and once again telling the user the simple fact of what not to do once drinking. It is an implicit advertisement as at first glance people wouldn’t understand why there is a car on their bottle cap, but the meaning is hidden on the inside and is later explained. It is an advertisement that needs more thought for you to understand what it is trying to tell you. Once you see the dinted cap and the message inside it all makes sense and it cleverly displays a simple message which the audience can understand. It isn’t overcomplicated as it has to appeal to people under the influence of alcohol so the bold simple message is still readable.

is also a very important part of advertising. Overall I really like this advertisement as I think it is well thought out and a good way to target an audience that are most likely going to drink drive, this will warn them and hopefully prevent it from happening. It is a simple but brilliant way of informing people about the risks.

This has inspired me by making me think about how I can incorporate information onto the outside of my jar, and by advertising before the jar is opened. To take care in how the jar looks and the placing of everything on it and everything that I put into it. It has shown me how packaging can also carry advertisements and the placement of advertisements page 18

Another implicit advertisement I looked at is this one. This shows how they are comparing a product to something in order to get their message across, this is another technique used in advertising and another one I wanted to look at. I wanted to look at a variety of different advertisements to see how they are put across and demonstrated to the public. This is advertising a food product and showing how it is a good snack for children. It has an energetic vibe to the advert and it’s showing how you can save money by giving your child two sausages to use their imagination and enjoy eating them rather then spending money on a toy drum kit, that they can act in the same way. It is putting the message across that your child will still be as excited with sausages and won’t know the difference because they have an imagination. This advert plays around with the imagination showing how a child thinks, the creator has put themselves into a child’s mind. I find this an effective way of advertising as it captures a real life moment and something that will be a reaction from a child when presented with this food product. It is a realistic look on a

child’s mind. It is implicit because it isn’t giving to much away, the image is the main focus of the advertisement and the strap line sums it up. You have to stop and think about it before you realise what the advertisement is about. It is an advertisement that you will remember because it is an intelligent way of interacting with the consumer by using advertising techniques that hold your attention for longer. People can relate to the advertisement which has a more personal vibe to it, this is another technique used in advertising as it makes people warm to a product and relate to it. The advert tells a story in the images it is showing which helps people to understand. Overall I like this advertisement as it is a clever way of advertising. For my advertisements I can bare these techniques in mind and use them for my final outcomes.

top 10 attractions, london These are the ten top attractions for London. They are, the British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, Coca-Cola London Eye, Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Tower of London, Royal Museums Greenwich and Madame Tussards London. I looked at what the top ten attractions were to see where people were advised to go and where is advertised in London for people to visit. I did this to see where people would tell people to go that had never visited a place before to get a grip of where I could tell life from out of space about and the places I could show them about. I want to stay away from the attraction advertisements in my final outcomes but I wanted to research places to go. These are all places in London, they are popular places to visit and are advertised to persuade and inform people about them. People tend to go to some of these places if they were going to visit London as it is known for these attractions. Looking

page 21

at the attractions for London has helped me to see where people would advise to go. They are all advertised using pictures of the places and a caption of information about the attraction, this shows me how a typical attraction is advertised. These are techniques I want to avoid when advertising places to put in my jar to show to life out of space as I think they are cheesy and not effective due to there simplistic techniques. They are not well thought out advertisements that show off our intelligent techniques, they do not hold the consumers attention for long, they are just there to inform and not much more. I want to do an advertisement with clever techniques, something clever and modern which also informs.

type based video I went onto vimeo to look at type based video to get a feel at what videos have been created connected to the Earth and include type to get the message across. This is one of the videos I came across. This is about how story telling effects the world and how it is a big part of our every day lives. How it has been going on in the Earth for centuries and many decades and people have used it to communicate. It tells their story through animated type and illustrators. It shows me how they have put a video together and how it works successfully together to create the final outcome. It flows and fits together well, the illustrations go with the type making it relevant and visually connected. The transitions are smooth and work in different ways keeping it fresh and exciting. The colours work well together making the type stand out on the background and it not being too overwhelming with too many colours, the colours go with what they are representing and work well together as a colour pallet. The layout is neat and simplistic making it easy to follow and read. Having the typefaces big and bold makes it easier to read at a quicker pace and makes it

more of a statement. This is a good example of how to work with type to make a video. This is quite long and I would want to make my video shorter to get my message across quicker. But I like this style of video. Overall I think this video works well as a whole and stands out to its audience, by using transitions it keeps the audience interested as they have to follow the type. This is something I will keep in mind when designing my video.

aardman I looked at Aardman as they do animated videos that tell a story. I picked this one as it was an infographic based animated video that has facts and figures involved. It shows me how they have made infographics and animated them into an advertisement for Asda. I wanted to see what they used to make the infographics out of. They have used the materials to connect to what the graphs are displaying. This is so the image connects to the information and the story all connects together making it relevant information and visuals to put together. It shows me simplistic ways to make an infographic and some materials that I can take into consideration. I can use every day materials if it fits with the purpose. By animating it makes it into the advertisement and more appealing to the viewers. Having the information moving and changing it keeps the viewers attention to watch and concentrate on the movements it takes to move to the next infographic. It all flows and works together well. It has been thought out which shows me planning is key when making a successful design.

This is a short quirky way of advertising. The techniques are something I can use in my development and try out to help get me to my final outcome. By using the products it makes it more visually pleasing and exciting as it isn’t just a boring graph, people find graphs boring and hard to understand but by using simplistic ways of informing people it helps them to understand and follow the information. Its a fun way to communicate information. Clever advertising is the most effective as it keeps the viewers attention for longer. This represents the Earth by using the materials used on the Earth every day such as food, it is made up out of the things used in every day life. It represents what people eat, wear and need to live here on Earth. It shows how you can show what Earth involves, and there is a lot of little things that make up Earth as a whole.

earth strata I looked at the Earth’s strata because this is a way of representing the Earth. This is what makes up the Earth. The Earth strata is layers of rocks, or soil that build up the floor of the Earth. They are a build up of many different layers on top of each other that build it up gradually.

Overall this is a good way to represent the Earth as this is part of the earth its self and these are what makes up the earth. With out these layers the earth would be none existent as there would be nothing to walk on or hold it together. It is a big part of Earth.

I wanted to look at this to see what it looks like and to see if I can get a visual out of what the earth is made up of. This can be a way of showing life from out of space what the earth is made of and about the geography of earth. This could be something I make an infographic out of. This is a visual image I found of the earth’s strata that someone has created, this looks intriguing with all the colours and like it could be turned into a design piece. I could use sand or other materials from the earth to make up layers to represent the earth’s strata and do my own versions of it to make into a final design. I could then refine this into an infographic about what the Earth is made up of.

infographic layouts I wanted to look at infographics to get an idea of how they work and the techniques used to make them effective. This may be something I create for my final outcome and I wanted to get influences before I start my experimentation stage. This has been done by using photography and then editing the image further on the computer and using software to add the colours and the text. The text informs people what each section of colour stands for and what the percentage is. It clearly states what the infographic is based on giving clear information for the audience to understand and it uses imagery in a clever way to inform people rather then them just using text and facts. By using imagery it makes it more visual and easier to understand as you are not presented with just text, it is well presented so that it is legible for the reader. It is a more graphical way of informing someone and holding their attention for longer without them getting bored. The imagery draws the audience in to see what it is about and then the type is there to explain. The use of colour is very important for infographics because it separates the different segments that represents the different

percentages; without these it would not be clear because they would all blend into one another making it confusing for the audience as each block would not be representing something different. The colours have to go with each other so that it is still pleasing to the eye. This is a good example of an infographic. It has influenced me to use photography and imagery to create an infographic as I think it captures the attention of an audience better than just text. The angle of the image is also something to take into consideration as it wouldn’t of worked as good head on, as the colours couldn’t of being made into a graph like form as achievable, this is another element I will have to think about carefully and I will do so by experimenting.

infographic layouts Here is another infographic I looked at to get an example of what techniques can be used and how an infographic can look. This is another infographic that has used photography and imagery to get across its information. I like these visual infographics as it makes them more interesting to look at and the information is more understandable alongside the image. The image is made out of the material that this infographic is representing which represents it to a higher standard and makes you understand it more. Its has a more handmade feel to it which looks more appealing to the eye rather than having a computer generated pie chart. The image draws the audience in so that they then read the information to find out about the cause. They have placed it on a tree to demonstrate that this is where paper comes from, this is well thought out as all the elements in this image are connected to the information it is displaying.

out of other techniques and materials apart from using digital techniques. It has shown how I can mix hand made and digital techniques together to put the final piece together. Overall I think this infographic works and displays its information very well. This is a way I would like to work to create an infographic if I do one for my final outcome for this project.

This has shown me how I can link the imagery to the text for my infographic and how the two work together to make a final piece. I like this as it is clever and a more imaginative way of making an infographic page 29

final idea concepts the golden jar.

infographic jar

layers of the earth

typography video

For this idea I am going to put advertisements I design into a transparent glass jar. The advertisements will be focussing on the earth, and advertising different parts, places, objects, people, almost everything that’s on the record. It will include the music aspect by using lyrics from the songs over the advertisements so that they can get a feel of the music from this generation. It will advertise how everything is now, so they can see they modernised world. Anything that I think can represent the earth can be put into the jar. It will be full of advertisements, this way they will also see how we live are lives around advertising and the techniques we use to inform and persuade people. I think this is a good way of recreating the golden record because it is involving things that haven’t already being put on it, and it will be updated, using advertising which is something extremely modern and a big part of our world today. The advertisements will be designed digitally, using a mixture of techniques.

This is another idea I can experiment with. For this idea I will use different coloured materials that I can layer up in a transparent glass jar (such as, different coloured sand, sweets, food and paper) this will create a layer up of different colours and they will be different widths to represent different percentages. I will take a photograph of the jars once they have the materials in them and bring them onto the computer turning them into infographics using digital techniques. I will label each colour with a different percentage explaining about what it represents and put the relevant information it needs. These could be done on, culture, religions, literate, money, and many other things I could take and compare from different countries around the world. I could also do a jar on the layers of the earth and explain about them, a more geographical look at the world.

I will do this idea by using sand to create layers in a glass jar creating the layers of the Earth. This will represent the Earth it’s self and the Earth’s Strata. The sand will be different colours to represent the different materials of the Earth’s Strata. Once I am happy with the way the jar looks I will then take a photograph and refine this further by taking it onto the computer. I will edit this on Photoshop and Illustrator, deleting the background of the image. Next I will add information using text, and a background using a block colour. I will experiment with the layout to get my final outcome. This will demonstrate different skills and techniques and create my final poster/infographic about the Earth.

My final idea was to do a ten second type based video displaying a fact about the earth. I will edit this by using After Effects and animate the typeface using effects making it move. This will demonstrate different skills and show that I can communicate with my audience through a video, representing the earth in this format. It would be simple but effective.

page 30

reasons why not to attack the earth (poster) This will be 4 posters having reasons why not to attack earth. It will speak about the reasons why earth is needed. It will inform them why earth is good, and 4 reasons why they shouldn’t want to attack earth if they ever wanted too. It would be type based and include fun facts about the earth, built all around why earth should never be attacked or taken over by life from out of space.
