CLUB INFO Special Club Experiences Gary Widett President Thank you for your part in another great season filled with that special BallenIsles member camaraderie which is the signature of our Club. There have been so many wonderful events and experiences to enjoy together. Who could forget all the holiday celebrations, the fun of Trivia Challenges, the great Tea and Topics gatherings, the antics and music during dinner shows by the Edwards Twins and Jordan Bennet, spectacular Wine Club and Amici D’Italia dinners, the beautiful and talent-filled Art Show, the pride and nostalgia surrounding our Veteran’s Reception, and all the sporting fun of numerous golf and tennis leagues, association play, tournaments and member/guest events? Talk about a season full of special moments and memories. The Summer Kick-Off party proved to be a particularly fulfilling end to this season with more than 800 Club friends enjoying a casual evening of good company, terrific food, and lively music.
Once again, in the midst of such a full Club calendar, members also devoted their time and resources to accomplish remarkable philanthropic achievements benefiting the BallenIsles Charities Foundation, Play for Pink, Prostate Cancer Research, Insight, Race for the Cure, Toys for Joy, Habitat for Humanity, and various food banks. There is no doubt that the warmth and generosity of BallenIsles is felt and appreciated far beyond our gates and throughout the local community. As we transition into summer activities, the Club remains very active at this time. Every year I notice seasonal residents extending their time in Florida to enjoy their Club lifestyle for a few weeks longer. It’s hard to leave paradise! For those of you who call BallenIsles home all year round, there will be plenty of Club activities to keep you entertained in the months ahead. This would be the perfect time to take advantage of the Personal
Training Jumpstart promotion to help you ease into a fitness program, or take your wellness goals to the next level. A great summer tradition is our reciprocal arrangements with other highend local private clubs providing the opportunity to try your game on new courses. Remember, those of you traveling further afield this summer also have the benefit of Troon Advantage and Troon Privé privileges at host clubs across the country, and around the world. The summer months at the Club will continue to be extremely busy behind the scenes. This is the time for operational planning for next season, intensive golf course maintenance, and various projects to spruce up the Club. It will also be time spent focused diligently on Strategic Planning, as the Board works to finalize a proposal for Clubhouse renovations to present to the membership. Whether at home or away, you can keep up with the Club on social media. Have you visited the BallenIsles Facebook page recently? Did you see the poignant Nike commercial, “Ripple,” featuring Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods walking down the fairway on the famed 17th hole of our East Course? Or the Vogue-sponsored music video shot onsite at the Sports Complex with Serena Williams, that has received over 3 million hits and mentions BallenIsles prominently in the credits? This one even stars some of our members in cameo roles! Brian Merbler, Director of Marketing, has worked hard to secure such engaging content, and members are encouraged to make a conscious effort to like and share these posts to boost our brand equity.
In closing, I must express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the entire staff of BallenIsles Country Club. During a season marked by the illness and tragic passing of General Manager, Derrick Barnett, the commitment to the Club shown by this team was incredible. They are to be commended for their efforts and ongoing dedication to member service. Wherever your travels may take you in the months ahead, I wish everyone a healthy and happy summer. I look forward to seeing you around the Club, or when you return in the fall. BALLENISLES COUNTRY CLUB

Frank Stewart Bridge Seminar On February 15, 2015 the Duplicate Bridge Club arranged for a very special lecture by Frank Stewart. His internationally syndicated column appears locally in our Palm Beach Post. He also writes a column in ACBL Bulletin and has written many books on bridge. Frank is indeed a real southern gentleman with a very dry sense of humor and twinkle in his eyes. Over 150 Members enjoyed his lesson and meeting Frank. He also played bridge with Gloria Glassman at our Saturday bridge game on February 14. Gloria won this privilege by being the highest bidder. Our bridge players also contributed money in honor of Frank Stewart to be sent to his favorite charity “Children’s Harbor” an organization that serves seriously ill children and their families in Alabama.

Michelle Doherty Director of Sports Complex With another busy and successful season coming to a close we would like to wish all of our members safe travels back up North or wherever your travels may take you this summer. Remember to stay focused and continue to make your health a priority. Just because your regular trainer is not with you that doesn’t mean you should take it easy and fall into bad habits. Consistency is key, so remain active, make good nutritional choices and stay hydrated. During the summer we will be replacing the older treadmills with the new Life Fitness Discover series. We will also be replacing our recumbent bikes with brand new models from Life Fitness. This third generation of touch screen consoles redefines the workout experience with the most advanced technology. The 19 integrated LCD touch screen features an abundance of entertainment options, enhanced interaction, internet connectivity and much more. We have received a fantastic response this season for our seminar series and we look forward to planning additional topics for next season. Wishing everyone a very enjoyable Summer! In Good Health!

DINING & SOCIAL Fitness Benefits
Fitness Seminar How Pilates can Benefit Your Golf Game • Concentration - Pilates teaches you how to concentrate on how your muscles are working, which in turn causes you to concentrate on your swing. • Control - You will learn to control your movements, which will give you a smoother stronger golf swing.
Pilates for Golf - Balanced Body You may be asking: Why will Pilates help my Golf Game? The response is simply this: It is the answer to many golfers swing problems. Pilates focuses on building core strength, improving muscular imbalances, posture, coordination, strength and flexibility, and increases your breathing capacity. Every golfer needs to improve their core in order to maintain a consistent posture and hit the ball farther. Pilates for Golf is the best way for you to achieve this. Regular Pilates will help you to achieve the following: • Strengthen the core for a steady swing and stabilized spine • Minimize the risk of lower back injury by improving postural habits • Increase hamstring flexibility for correct “address” • Improve leg endurance and strength • Improve rotation of the torso • Improve hip flexibility to create greater energy • Strengthen the upper and lower arm, wrist and hands • Correct muscular imbalances created by the golf game
Why is Pilates Good for Your Golf Game? Pilates will benefit your golf game because all the muscles you use in golf are trained during a Pilates workout. In a Pilates workout you will be performing exercises that will work on: balance, coordination, strength and flexibility. Pilates is beneficial to everyone and each exercise can be modified to individual golfer’s needs. If you love to golf and want to improve your form, improve your score and reduce your chances of injury, Pilates is for you. All the twisting and swinging that golfer’s do can take a toll on the body, especially the lower back. Pilates will help you to increase your mobility and flexibility on all of the joints that contribute to a smooth, efficient golf swing. You’ll feel better on the course and you’ll find that you can drive the ball farther without suffering any discomfort. Golf requires trunk flexibility and stability, strong legs and glutes to help transfer the energy of ground force reactions and strong shoulders and back (lats) to assist with control of the golf club and a strong core to support the body for the rigors of the repetitive swing motion. Back injuries are common with golfers and Pilates exercises can help with relief of pain as well as help gain a more balanced musculature. The key to a successful golf swing is balance. Pilates exercises teach total body conditioning by integrating the entire body into all movement patterns which optimal golf performance requires.
• Breathing - In Pilates, you never hold your breath. Transferring this to your golf game will help you to develop smoothness and strength. • Core Strength - By strengthening your core muscles, you have a much bigger range of controlled motion. This will enable you to not only swing your club better; it will give you a more powerful drive. If you would like to speak with one our highly accredited Pilates Trainers, please call the BallenIsles Pilates Studio at 561.775.4734.

GOLF Tee Talk Jeff Fitzherbert Director of Golf It has been a pleasure interacting with you and we hope that you have been enjoying your season so far. In December we conducted our first annual Pro-Member event which sold out in one day and paired one Golf Professional with three amateurs in a best ball format. The winners were Chris Kaufman, PGA with members Chuck Wasserman, Ernie Hanna, and Harvey Brandt. In January we held our Men’s and Women’s Club Championships and for the first time in the club’s history, a husband and wife won their respective titles. Mark Tschetschot, a three-time Champion won the men’s and Cheri Tschetschot captured the women’s. Our Men’s Member-Guest held on February 6th was big hit with all the participants. Each member and guest chose from a wide array of tee gifts from Callaway Golf. A day filled with camaraderie and great food concluded with our traditional shootout at the back of the clubhouse to the 18th green. We received very positive comments from our Couples Guest Day held on February 22nd. The new concept event sold out very quickly and was well received.

DINING & SOCIAL Golf Tip Shawn Costello Head Golf Professional
Chipping vs. Pitching I am consistently asked by many people what the difference is between a “chip” shot and a “pitch” shot. Knowing the difference between the two and when to use each can make a significant impact on lowering one’s score.
Men’s Left Handed Golf Tournament Participants: Bill Anscher, Howard Rosen, Harvey Harmon, Michael Schneider, Marty Allen, Joel Rothenberg, Jerome Brown, John Ostrowski, Stephen Perl, Gary Mazzaferro & Alan Brown (not pictured is Bob Weintraub)
A chip is a shot played from around the green from inside approximately twenty yards. The standard motion used to play a proper chip shot would include the following:
Alternate Left Handed Golf Tournament Participants: Carol Rose, Sandy and Jerry Matlin & Judi Robinovitz
• The ball position should be slightly back in your stance (or centered for a higher lofted chip, if so desired)
Hole-In-One
• Your weight and hand position should be leaning slightly on your front leg (or more centered for a higher lofted chip, if so desired) • The swinging motion of the club should be a one-lever motion, meaning that the wrists do not hinge or break very much throughout the swing A pitch is a shot that is played from greater than approximately twenty yards. The standard motion used for the pitch shot is as follows: • The ball position should be positioned in the middle of your stance • Your weight and hand position should be centered • The swinging motion should be a two-lever swing, where the wrists hinge slightly upwards • The distance control of the shot should be dictated by the length of the swing For a longer shot, make a longer backswing. For a shorter shot, make a shorter backswing. One key note to take away is to try and match the length of the backswing to the length of the forward swing. (i.e. If your backswing length is to your shoulders, then your forward swing should be to your shoulders) Please keep in mind that careful practice and guidance is essential in helping you perfect both of these shots as well as when to use them. DINING & SOCIAL Women’s Golf Association (WGA) by Mihoh Dolan The season is now in full swing for the Women’s Golf Association with an increase in our membership year after year! On January 27th we hosted our first of two Member-Guest days where the theme was ‘the REAL Housewives of Palm Beach County’. We had a great turn out and both the members and our guests had a fantastic day of golf, cocktails and feast! We had a wonderful turn-out at our Par 3 and Girls’ Night Out events in addition to our Annual Grand Finale Closing Day Tournament which took place on April 28. We look forward to having many more days of great golf and friendships!
Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association (WNGA) by Linda Berlin Pairs of golfers gathered on the terrace for a tailgate lunch, wearing shirts and hats honoring their favorite sports teams. Golf and a delicious barbecue dinner followed our annual Couples Mixer. Margie Block and Leslie Carpe did a great job chairing this event.
