CLUB INFO A Successful Club is Predicated on People Chris Card General Manager The success of a private country club is predicated on people – Members who are ready and willing to make a difference and contribute to a positive Club experience. At this time of year, at the very height of season, BallenIsles shines in this regard. I would like to thank those Members who dedicate their valuable time to governance roles on the Board, offer advice on committees, volunteer their energy towards admirable philanthropic efforts, or support Club events and activities with great enthusiasm. Once again this year, President’s Week was one of the true highlights of our season. The holiday break was packed with entertainment, enjoyed by members’ families and guests of all ages. Based on your positive reviews, a real crowd pleaser was the Mad Science presentation which featured an engaging mix of interactive science projects and comedy. Adults and children alike were thoroughly amused and enthralled by the various chemical reactions exhibited and showmanship of the Science Professor. It was a great time had by all! Many thanks to all of those members who participated in the 2015 Annual Membership Survey. The results are being analyzed in extensive detail and those areas where improvements are needed are being thoroughly reviewed. Based on our initial findings, we have already started developing specific action plans to address certain areas. Your opinion and feedback is a constructive process that is extremely valuable for practical operational evaluation and adjustments. Thank you again for all the helpful suggestions you have shared with us. We continue to drive our integrated marketing plan with the Community Association, targeting the best opportunities to share BallenIsles with the world beyond our gates. A series of strategically targeted online ads, print ads and TV commercials along with public relations and social media efforts are also an important part of our marketing plan. The creative elements of each marketing tool in the mix are consistent with an upscale and cohesive BallenIsles brand identity. Our goal is to drive awareness and interest in the community as a whole. Through paid and earned media activities, we are also aiming to provide you, our membership, with the tools to act as

Len Yohay, Lauren Dowd-Shedlock, Chris Card & Bob Langer At a breakfast function held at the Bistro hosted by Chris Card, and chaired by Leonard Yohay, a brief review was provided to those attendees by Bob Langer regarding his interviews with the Ballenisles World War II Veterans, filmed and edited by Lauren Down-Shedlock of BICA. Mr. Langer advised that he had solicited the United States Library of Congress to accept this extraordinary film for its archives, and in addition, has been advised that Senator Marco Rubio will be sending a personal letter of congratulations to those BallenIsles WW II Veterans who so bravely and unselfishly gave of their service to our nation. The filmed tribute to the BallenIsles World War II Veterans may be viewed on your community Channel 63.

effective ambassadors for your Club lifestyle. There is no marketing strategy or advertising placement more effective than a personal testimonial or word of mouth endorsement by a Member sharing their memorable Club moments with a prospective homeowner. Like I said in the beginning, the success of a Club is predicated upon people. Thank you for telling your friends about BallenIsles, inviting them to the Club as your guests and always remembering to remind them, that while it’s a great place to visit, BallenIsles is an even better place to live!

Fitness Seminars Seminar The Fitness Seminars will be held at the BallenIsles Sports Complex Conference Room (SCC) or Group Exercise Room (GE). Please stay tuned for the topics of the upcoming seminars. Stress Reduction & Meditation – Mary Beth Stern Tuesday, March 22 11:00 am | SCC & GE

For the Love of Golf How to Keep Playing the Game You Love How many times have you said, “I sure wish I could drive the ball as many yards as I use to.” While the effects of aging take their toll years of playing golf have also created wear and tear on the body. The golf swing is one of the most complicated movements in sport. Proper body mechanics are essential for optimal performance. The golf swing requires full rotational capacity of nearly every joint involved and must be done efficiently, explosively and repeatedly. Many swing faults have a direct relationship to restricted joint mobility including hip rotation imbalance which is associated with overuse injuries. Common swing faults occur due to tight shoulders, tightness in the hip joint, spinal injuries, and repetitive strain injuries. For example, when the hips are restricted the body makes higher demands on the spine and shoulders to complete the swing. In the golf swing, as in most other movements involving the human body, the upper body moves in harmony with and in response to the movement of the lower body. The sequence of these movements determines how much power will be generated at the point of ball impact. Hip rotation in the golf swing is extremely important and can have a major impact in performance enhancement as well as injury prevention. The golf swing is one of the most complicated movement patterns in sport. Exercise programs that include flexibility, balance training, strength training and plyometrics have shown to improve golf swing mechanics. Not only can exercise programs improve performance but studies show that exercise and training prevents injury as well. Golf performance is multifactorial, and other parameters such as swing mechanics, mental preparation, and golf equipment are implicated in optimal golf performance. Nevertheless, the results of conditioning studies have provided a scientific rationale for fitness conditioning programs as an intervention for improving the physical factors affecting golf performance. Despite one’s age engaging in multi-dimensional training programs has been scientifically proven to effectively assist golfers in preventing injury and improving performance. I would like to thank you for your support over the last year and send you and your families my warmest wishes for a New Year that is filled with health, happiness, and much prosperity. We have had many successful events to start out the season. In November we conducted our first annual Meatballs and Martinis Night Golf Event. Fairways, tees and greens were lit with glow lights for a six-hole scramble format. The event was preceded by cocktails and dinner. The winners were Michael & Judie Muntner and Gary & Laurie Blau. In December we held our Fall ProMember. This sold out event paired one of our 18 Golf Professionals with three members. Winning the tournament was James Kelly, Assistant Professional along with Michael Muntner, Judie Muntner and Laurie Blau. We conducted our 17th Annual Men’s Member - Member Tournament on Jan 15 & 16. Jace Rosenbluth and Rich Rosenthal were crowned Champions. Our first of two Men’s Member-Guest Tournaments was held on February 5. The event sold out and was played on the East Course. Our second of two Men’s Member Guests will be played on March 18. This will be a 12:30 shotgun start packed with great competition, valuable tee gifts, and great food. We have a full calendar of events this season so please make sure to look at the bulletin boards, online calendars, and the Foretees system. On March 25 we will conduct our 6th Annual Callaway Fun Day. This interactive demo day will take place on the North side of the driving range from 12 pm - 4 pm. Contests, raffles, and food are in store for all those that come out and try some the latest product the company has to offer. DINING & SOCIAL Golf Tip Shawn Costello Head Golf Professional

Playing the Bunkers Many of you watching the professional events on television see how easy the Tour Player is able to get out of a greenside bunker. Often times, the telecaster will even mention something alluding to how it is one of the “easiest shots in golf.” Yet for many players, bunkers are seen as a very penalizing obstacle. Allow me to explain how to better aid your bunker play. As with most all shots in the game, having the proper set-up and technique will help tremendously. The set-up is critical in helping to achieve the desired result. First, let’s begin by aiming your body line slightly to the left of your intended target. Next, let’s place approximately 75% of your weight on your front leg. Opening your clubface (either a SW or LW is acceptable) enough so that a coin can rest on the clubface without falling off. This will help to utilize the bounce on the club and help eliminate the leading edge of the club from digging in too much. Now you must make a swing - the backswing should be one that is more vertical and slightly to the outside. The downswing path should follow your body line that is aiming left of the target. The next point is essential to success - you must strike the sand approximately 3/4” - 1 1/2 ” behind the ball and keep the clubhead slightly open and accelerating through the shot. Hitting the ball with an accelerating clubhead that strikes the sand in the appropriate spot will allow the ball to come out high and land soft. If you strike too far behind the sand, the clubhead’s accelerating force will be significantly slowed down, thus resulting in the potential for the golf ball to travel a very short distance and not get out of the bunker. Also, striking too far behind the sand will not allow for the ball to have very much if any backspin and if the ball gets out of the bunker, your shot may go running too far onwards. Conversely, if you strike the ball before the sand, you run the risk of the ball sailing too far away and potentially over the green. As you can see, the distance the club strikes into the sand behind the ball is critical to helping ensure a successful bunker shot. Please keep in mind, this tip is for the average bunker shot you are likely to face. Having different sand textures, side-hill, uphill and downhill shots will require more precision as well as altering techniques and set-ups. With a watchful eye and diligent practice, I am confident your bunker play will improve.

Two Important Rule Changes For 2016 For more information these or other rules please check with your BallenIsles Professional Staff.

Rule 18-2. Ball at Rest Moved By Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment Rule 18-2b (Ball Moving After Address) has been withdrawn. This means that when a ball moves after a player has addressed it, the application of a penalty under Rule 18-2 will be based purely on whether the player caused the ball to move.

Rule 14-1b. Anchoring the Club A new Rule is introduced to prohibit anchoring the club, either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point,” during the making of a stroke.

DINING & SOCIAL Women’s Golf Association (WGA) by Lois Eskenazi & Pat Rado One week prior to the Professional Super Bowl, the WGA hosted a fabulous Guest Day, chaired by Linda Abrahamson and Marion Wicker. The guests dressed to support their favorite teams….from cheer-leaders to fans, and all were winners with the stylish waterproof jackets given as favors. The theme was carried out through both lunch and dinner, including miniature bar-b-que grills as centerpieces, and the team pictures were taken in front of the official “Tailgate Wagon”. The pre-game lunch consisted of wraps and salads, while the dinner included the elaborate seafood display along with the various food stations in the usual, wonderful BallenIsles style.
