The Bench 2016 Entry (2nd Runner Up)

Page 1

The inspiration for the Pause/Play bench comes from a people-centric analysis of public space. Benches are used in a variety of ways as rest spaces for seating, sleeping and eating, as well as places of play and exploration. The Pause/Play bench makes use of these opportunities to create moments of social integration, where people from different walks of life can use the bench differently, but together. We often design using assumptions of standard ergonomic dimensions, for a one-size-fits-all solution. Sometimes this approach can mean that the design is in fact designed for no-one in particular. The design of the Pause/Play bench therefore challenges this, through consideration of those with different needs to that of the default. The variety of seating options and scales arises from the consideration of alternative needs, whilst providing a dynamic and playful environment for all. The Elderly To counter lonliness, a space with arm support is positioned adjacent to ‘play’ seating, where encounters can occur. Children Children can be much smaller, and often look for places to play. The varied heights of the step design accounts for both rest and play at the scale of the child. Less-Abled People For people in wheelchairs, benches are not usable. This is why a space has been included for those in wheelchairs to sit next to friends in the same plane as the bench. Homeless People Homeless people can be left unconsidered or thought unwanted in public space. For this reason a safe sleep space is included in the design.

From the street, the Pause/Play bench appears like a standard bench, where people can sit whilst waiting.

The Pause/Play bench is constructed from 2”x4” locally sourced timber studs, joined together through slots and finger joints. Adjacent studs are held together using steel brackets so that each ‘panel’ can be built as a transportable piece, then slotted into place to create the bench. This also means that the bench can be taken apart and reconstructed at another site after initial use. The total number of each 2”x4” stud per length is as following: 45 x 40’ 174 x 30’ 18 x 20’ 12 x 12’ 64 x 4’

= ~645ft, including spare lengths/ 430 board feet @ $1.00 per board foot = $430 The remaining $70 can be used to cover the costs for the steel brackets.
