T

he last two years have been a difficult time for the travel industry, with lockdowns putting a halt on travelling abroad. However, now that restrictions have lifted, things are looking up, and people are more eager than ever to travel. People have the intention to spend approximately 39pc more on travel in 2022, compared to 2019, and they are planning, on average, 3.8 trips in 2022. This is according to Accor’s latest Northern Europe Travel Trends Report. Paul Hackett, Managing Director of Click&Go, and President of the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA), says, “People have not been able to travel abroad freely for almost two years, so there is massive pent-up demand. “The early trends we are seeing are that people are looking for something different and something better. The pandemic is an opportunity to change tack and consider other destinations. Bookings are strong for all EU destinations and the US. Cruise bookings are also beginning to trend upwards.” Paul says while Spain and Portugal will always be the first and second choice for Irish holidaymakers, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Turkey are selling very well. “There’s a massive choice from Dublin, Cork and Shannon. Ryanair is adding new routes and, out of Dublin alone, they are flying to 120 destinations. That said, all airlines have moved quickly to restore routes and flight capacity. We are very lucky for an island with just five million people to have great airports and airline choices.”

Time for a holiday

From 2022’s travel trends, to the considerations to keep in mind when travelling, here’s what you need to know about booking a getaway this year

On top of all of that, your money is 100pc secure when you book with an Irishbased, licenced travel agent.” Paul says he is delighted to be back to doing what he loves most, sending people on holidays. “During Covid, everyone in the business put in a real team effort. Our focus was on our customers, staff and suppliers. Like most travel agents, we were open and looking after refunds and changes for our customers for the last 20 months. We also made sure the Click&Go brand was alive and visible throughout the pandemic and we are seeing the benefits of that now that trading is heading back to normal. “We have actually achieved five stars on Trustpilot this month and got more than 5,000 customer reviews talking about how helpful our staff are and how easy it is to book on Click&Go.com.” Paul, who is nearing his first anniversary as being elected President of the ITAA, adds, “Travel agents have shown their amazing resilience over the last two years. There were remarkably few failures and we have served our customers and staff as best we could. I hope I can continue to make a difference in the role and represent our industry in a positive and professional light.” Travel plans And where does Paul plan to travel himself this year? “We went to Belgrade in Serbia last month to visit friends, who moved there last year. We’re off to Sorrento in early April with my parents and some friends. “A number of the cruise lines are launching new ships in March, April and May, so I’ll be heading out to those. I’ll also have to fit in some time to get to Sitges. And, I want to get down to Antalya in Turkey this year. That’s a new direct service from Ireland with Turkish Airlines. It’s exciting to be able to travel again!”

Six must-try outdoor experiences in Nova Scotia Filled to the brim with picturesque landscapes and a rich heritage, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia also has many incredible experiences that will help make a memorable holiday

O

ne of Canada’s four Maritime provinces, Nova Scotia is home to over 13,000km of coastline. The province boasts spectacular beaches, diverse cultures, friendly locals, six UNESCO designated sites, and world-class experiences. For example, there’s the Cabot Trail, which has continuously been voted one of the world’s most scenic drives. Meanwhile, the Bay of Fundy is recorded to have the highest tides in the world, and included as one of the seven most breath-taking natural wonders of North America. For those looking for adventure, Nova Scotia ticks all the boxes. There’s sailing, whalewatching, kayaking, river rafting, glamping under the stars, as well as lots to learn from the locals. Nova Scotia is also ideal for road trips, with plenty of seaside and inland driving routes. And, Nova Scotia is just a six-hour flight from Ireland – making the destination the perfect choice to add to your travel bucket list! When this massive influx of water pours into the Shubenacadie River, the two waters collide to create rapids and waves, that travel up the river (also known as a tidal bore). Expert guides will take you over the rapids, as the incoming ocean reverses the flow of the river. Add to the fun: go mud-sliding after your rafting trip! For all the family

Tenerife, Spain

Travel writer Shauna McCrudden chooses her top destinations that every member of the family can enjoy

I

f the past two years have taught us anything, it is just how important our families are to us. And to appreciate the time we get to spend with each other. This was shown very clearly in a recent survey commissioned by the Dalata Hotel Group. According to the survey, the popularity of holidays with three generations of the same family is on the increase. Three-outof-five people (58pc) said the pandemic has made them value family time more. 57pc are planning a multigenerational trip in the next five years, with 37pc having already booked one. Families want to stay together and what better way than a family-friendly trip with activities to suit everyone? But what are the best options?

A magical world

I travelled to Orlando, Florida right before the pandemic hit in February 2020. And I got to experience everything my childhood self always wanted. Who doesn’t dream of going to Walt Disney World Resort? But it’s not just for kids, as all members of the family can have the time of their lives. Myself and my group began our visit in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where real and fictional animals all combine. What really got me was the Pandora – The World of Avatar addition to the park, with an immersive Avatar Flight of Passage taking you into the world of the movie. Next, we visited Disney’s Hollywood Studios which got me the most excited with its Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land. We even got to fly like Han Solo in the Millenium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride! The fun didn’t end there as the next day, we also got to enjoy Universal Studios Florida. We

Shauna (second from left) and her group at Universal Studios, Florida

soared with Transformers: The Ride-3D and even got to race Jimmy Fallon in a virtual race through New York! But it was The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, with its life-sized Diagon Alley and Gringotts Bank, which had me bursting with joy. We got to experience the one-of-a-kind rollercoaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which I would seriously recommend. From Harry Potter to Marvel Superheroes, we were so glad we got to experience the Incredible Hulk Coaster, one of my favourites of the day. I never wanted to leave, and with so many family groups around me, I knew this was an experience for every age. →For more information, go to VisitOrlando.com

Follow the Camino

The Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, a city in Galicia (Spain), is such a unique trip for all the family. Friends of mine have said it was one of the most incredible experiences of their lives. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its important role in encouraging cultural

exchanges between people from all over Europe and the world for many centuries. The network of trails has become a phenomenon. Not only because of its history and the cultural aspect of the route, but also because of the people met along the way. The trails can be walked or cycled together and are perfect for busy families who don’t get to have that type of quality time at home. A package deal with Camino Ways will typically consist of a seven-night package, and accommodation in private hotels and guesthouses along the route. With riverside

picnics, rural recreational areas, the food markets, or a visit to the natural history museum in Santiago, this makes for a memorable trip. →Visit caminoways.com

Siena

I completed part of the Via Francigena route a few years back. The full route of the ancient pilgrim trail takes pilgrims from Canterbury, England to Rome, Italy. And I completed approximately 100km in five days in Tuscany, beginning in Lucca and ending in Siena. It was a challenge, but arriving into Siena on that last day brought a great sense of achievement. Siena, named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, is a small city, but highly worth visiting for its medieval, ‘Game of Thrones’-esque feel. Filled with cobblestone streets and Gothic architecture, Siena is the embodiment of what an Italian city looked like in the Middle Ages. Stop by the beautiful Duomo Cathedral and Piazza del Campo, which is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, due to its architecture and bell tower. It is bustling with bars and restaurants. There’s also a variety of traditional shops and boutiques and cafés dotted around Siena – and we all know how divine Italian food and coffee is! Buon appetito! For my night stay in Siena, my accommodation was Minerva Hotel (albergominerva.it/en), which was based right in the heart of Siena. I was lucky with my room, because I had impressive views from my window overlooking the city. Some rooms are even known as ‘romantic rooms’ and offer a private terrace. Perfect for a couples’ getaway. →Visit italia.it/en/siena-the-historic-cente

I lived in Cardiff for a year when I was in college, and also visited the capital of Wales on a weekend away with my sister more recently. Whether you decide to visit with family, friends

or your partner, there’s plenty to see and do. Some highlights include Cardiff Castle, the Millennium Stadium and a visit to Cardiff Bay, which is approximately a 10-minute drive away and easily accessible by train. Cardiff also has a great nightlife and restaurant offerings. We enjoyed cocktails at Revolution, ate a delicious brunch at Bill’s Restaurant and Bar, and dined in the evening at the Alchemist (thealchemist.uk.com). The Alchemist’s ‘theatrical’ cocktails are seriously amazing. One cocktail involved throwing what was similar to a bath bomb into the drink, causing it to change colour! We stayed in Hotel Indigo Cardiff (ihg.com), a lovely boutique hotel right in the centre of Cardiff City, which has a rooftop bar and terrace. Plus, it was located near the city’s main shopping centre, St David’s Dewi Sant. That suited me perfectly! →See visitcardiff.com

Segway tour in Gozo!

St Julian’s, Malta

I travelled to Malta for the first time at the end of September 2021, and I instantly fell in love with the island. While it was rolling into winter time when I arrived, the temperature was just right – hitting approximately 27°C. Malta generally has a mild climate all year round, but the hottest months to travel are typically during the summer months. Malta is the largest of the three major islands that constitute the Maltese archipelago (Gozo and Comino are the other two islands), and is located between Sicily and the North African coast. I stayed in the seaside town of St Julian’s. This is a popular holiday spot and is filled with an array of restaurants and bars. My accommodation was the beautiful 5-Star Hilton Malta, based by Portomaso Marina. From the balcony in my elegant room, I had gorgeous views of the sea. How relaxing it was to wake up to the sounds of the waves every morning.

Blue Grotto, Malta

Hot spots

Travel writer Clodagh Dooley shares two amazing sun destinations to visit this summer If you’re looking for things to do in Malta, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Some of my highlights included a day trip to Valletta, Malta’s capital, and a ferry over to Gozo, the second-largest island in the Maltese archipelago. We went to Cirkewwa (about a 36-minute drive from St Julian’s) to catch a ferry to Gozo, which treated us to incredible

views of crystal blue waters and Gozo’s pristine coastline. The ferry only takes approximately 20 minutes and ferry tickets vary depending on if you are travelling just as a passenger, or bringing your car with you. A highlight of my day spent in Gozo was the village of Munxar, where my group did a Segway tour (gozosegway.com). This is an

activity that took me completely out of my comfort zone – trying to master a Segway is not an easy feat! But once I got the hang of it, we embarked on an exhilarating one-hour tour around Gozo that led to magnificent views from the Sanap Cliffs. Back on Malta’s main island, I also visited the Blue Grotto sea caves, located near Quendri. We explored the seven caves that made up the Blue Grotto via a very shaky boat, but it was a thrilling experience. Overall, I was in complete awe of Malta’s beauty and I would definitely return. For anyone considering visiting Malta, I would highly recommend basing yourself in St Julian’s and then planning some day trips across your holiday to really immerse yourself in Malta’s culture and history. You can get around Malta by bus, car hire, or taxi. Or, check out Zarb Coaches (zarbcoaches.com) which

ntalya is Türkiye’s biggest international sea resort, with the country’s most iconic waterfront. Part of the Turkish Riviera, it is a gateway to the Mediterranean region and its shimmering blue waters. Antalya is a city where the sea, sun, history, and nature commune in harmony. The area has pristine beaches, world-class hotels, and stunning nature. But if you’re visiting Antalya only for the sea and sun, you are just scratching the surface. With forests and mountains scattered throughout the land, mixed with ancient millennial ruins, Antalya is a dream for adventurers and a hotspot for history and romance lovers from all over the world. Antalya continues to be the most popular tourist destination in the Mediterranean, hosting the highest number of tourists in the region. But why is this city, the largest Mediterranean coastal city in Türkiye, so popular? Best beach destination Those who want to get lost in nature can find dozens of options in Antalya. With the 640km coastline stretching from west to east on the Mediterranean coast, and the Taurus Mountains surrounding the city parallel to the coast. Families love the miles of safe, white, sandy beaches, including Konyaaltı Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Antalya. Stretching for nearly 7km, the numerous cafés and restaurants make it the perfect place to relax and soak in the sun. And with a variety of swimming, beach sports and water sports facilities, there is something to do for all the family! Cultural destination Situated right on the Gulf of Antalya, exploring the largest city on Türkiye’s western Mediterranean coastline is not just about building sandcastles on the beach. There are plenty of opportunities to delve into history, nature, and culture. If you want some sightseeing, Aspendos, one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in

Kekova, Antalya

Türkiye’s Mediterranean gem

With a fascinating history, wonderful family activities, and a top golf resort, Antalya in Southern Türkiye (Turkey) has something for everyone the world, is one of the most fascinating and beautiful places you’ll ever visit. The site’s ancient theatre – one of the greatest remaining pieces of architecture – is the monument everyone needs to see at least once, and holds operas and festivals throughout the year! If you’re a history buff, why not create a weekend itinerary around the historic tourist attractions, like Phaselis, Myra, Alanya’s red tower and castle, the Kekova sunken ruins and more? Antalya is filled with a wealth of historical and artistic treasures, just waiting for you to explore. Go Golf Türkiye The city, in the Turkish Riviera, is a must-see for all sporting enthusiasts. But the city is a true ‘must-visit’ destination for all golf lovers.

Türkiye has become a popular golf destination, attracting golfers from Europe and worldwide with its signature golf courses and night golf experiences. Belek, a resort town a little way from Antalya, offers luxury hotels, PGA-branded and signature golf courses for golf, and a lot of different golf tournaments. There are over a dozen golf courses to choose from. Not to mention, the mix of championship golf courses too, such as PGA Sultan, National, Faldo, Sueno Pines, Lykia Links, the Regnum Carya and Montgomerie Course (home to the Turkish Airlines Open), to name but a few. All of this adds to Belek’s position as a top golf tourism destination. Delicious food Since it enjoys a temperate climate in all four

seasons, Türkiye is a culinary paradise and Antalya is famous for its local food. Some delicacies of Antalya include: Şiş Köfte – What makes meatballs (köfte) from Antalya different? For one, they arrive on skewers. Enjoy them with a warm pide and toppings such as cumin, tomato, pepper and baked onion. Antalya Piyazı – If you want to try something genuinely Antalya, make sure you order this zesty bean dish. It comes drizzled in a tarator sauce of tahin, lemon juice, vinegar, salt garlic, olive oil, and water. This tasty salad has been a firm favourite in Antalya for almost a hundred years. Freshly squeezed pomegranate and orange juice – Nothing is quite as refreshing (or delicious) as a hand-pressed juice made from regionally grown fruit. And while various street food is popular in different regions, the most most-loved street food, like simit, can be found nearly everywhere. So, if you are in a rush, or just want to enjoy the vibrant street life in the city, stop and grab a delicious local snack!
