I like to define it as a platform for new and exciting work covering all genres of the performing arts including theatre, comedy, dance, poetry, film and live music. All our acts are hand picked by our programming team to give you one of the strongest fringe programmes in the country. Look out for our South African programme and workshops including comic book masterclasses and Drum Tribe drumming. Take a risk and see something you would never see... that’s what it’s all about. Catch one or two of our world premier shows and be the first person to see the next big name in comedy! Come and support national and international artists from as far as South Africa, China and USA as well as our very own home-grown talent.

Everyone at The Quarry Theatre at St. Luke’s is very excited to be hosting this year’s Bedfringe as part of our preview season. We’re especially impressed by the number and range of acts, many of whom are coming to Bedfringe before going on to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The advantage of Bedfringe is that all the shows are in one place, you won’t have to trek around Edinburgh (invariably in the rain) and it’s far less expensive to see them in Bedford of course. I’ve experienced most of the venues in Edinburgh and I think you’ll find our theatre much more comfortable as well! For those of you with young children don’t forget that the whole thing kicks off with our free children’s show The Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie, a magical show for children aged 3 and over, on Thursday 23 July in Russell Park at 1.00pm and 4.00pm. FERDINAND
written and directed by heather Bagnall, author of SInGLEmARRIEDGIRL and featuring Luke Tudball, Ferdinand is the heartwarming yet hardhitting story of Tom, a single dad who just wants to raise his son Ferdinand with love and empathy in a world determined to make him fight. Inspired by the children’s classic ‘The Story of Ferdinand’ about the bull who wouldn’t fight but just wanted to sit and smell the flowers, Ferdinand explores the world of parenting in a generation of cyber bullying, corporate downsizing and school yard violence while answering the question, “who do you want to be, the bully or the bull?” Recommended for ages 8 and above. “I liked the story so much that I would like to see it extended.” PGH Stage

children’s theatre THE MAGIC PORRIDGE POT & OTHER TASTY TALES
WIDDERSHINS’ STORY TIME: THE PRINCESS & THE PEA
This is a well known tale, given a slightly food-related spin. King Lentil-Bentil and Queen Tomatina are worried that their son, Prince Pilchard, is spending too much time on his computer. how will he ever meet a potential wife? moreover, how will he ever meet a proper princess? when the mysterious olivia turns up – without a crown – their fears are increased.
Splodge that porridge! Slurp that soup! Snap that biscuit! on today’s menu there is a trio of traditional and tasty tales to tantalise and tease. For starters we have the magic pot which won’t stop producing porridge. The main course is a delicious soup made from the scrummiest stone in the world and for pudding (if you can catch it) we have a walking talking Gingerbread man, who is just asking to be munched! oh Crumbs! These three yummy yarns which you know so well are served with unexpected spices and quirky flavours, along with widdershins’ trademark ingredients of puppets, pop-up sets and original music. Perfect fare for fussy foodies and discerning diners. Bon Appetit!

MADMAN MARATHON MAN
matt has been losing his best friend Sam to sport for years. Every year, football, Formula one and wrestling take a greater prominence in Sam’s life over his friendship with matt. In a fit of jealous rage, matt concocts a plan to rival the stars that Sam follows in an attempt to outdo them all. In order to save their friendship, he’s going to become the one thing that’s been driving a wedge between them – a modern sports star. he’s going to become one, whether Sam or the world is ready for it or not. his aim is simple – encapsulate everything that a modern star represents and take it to the extreme and outdo them all – all the glory, pride, discrimination and tabloid disgrace multiplied by ten. “Hilarious and heartfelt…multiple laugh-out-loud moments…a triumph for Fringe newcomers Tops and Tales” Broadway Baby

Pinch Theatre Company was founded by Sophie PoyntzLloyd, Rachel Sherborne, Zoe Davey and Sam Skinner. our production explores the concept of social media taking over the relationships between humans as we know it. Taking inspiration from George orwell’s novel, 1984, our performance explores the possibility of how technology and social media could develop from the present convenience it is now to a psychological and physical dependency in the future: a future in which everything we know in physical human interaction e.g. face to face talking and intimacy, has been replaced by virtual communication. we think intimacy lies in a perfectly-executed string of emoji. we think effort is a “good morning text. we say romance is dead, because maybe it is. A mother so desperate to seek justice for her lost daughter that she infiltrated the life of the man who had her stolen away This tale will tell of all these things. A complex web of family and foes, is this how the story of Lady macbeth really goes? was she as cold and manipulative as Shakespeare paints her to be? or is there more to this anti-heroine than meets the eye? JACK THE RIPPER: FACTS, NO FICTION
London, 1888: Jack the Ripper is killing whitechapel prostitutes.127 years later, all most people know about this serial killer are myths and theories. Philip hutchinson is an author, guide and lecturer on the Ripper murders and regarded as a world authority on the case. he’ll tell you just the facts, with some unexpected laughs thrown in. “Hutchinson has written several books about these infamous events and his knowledge of the subject is apparent from the outset. His ability to evoke quotations, dates, places and names with no written prompts is an astounding feat. Far from being preachy, didactic or Gradgrindian, the hour is filled with audible laughs through comic asides. These moments both aid the delivery and ease those of a squeamish or sensitive nature. As well as the welcome use of visual aids, Hutchinson’s diverse lexicon goes as far as possible at positioning the audience at the scenes of the crime whilst these atrocities were being committed.” ★★★★★ Broadway Baby

MR MERRICK, THE ELEPHANT MAN
Joseph merrick (better known as The Elephant man) is possibly the most famous ‘freak’ in history. many stage plays and the popular film have told a romantic and often fictional account of his story. ‘mr merrick, The Elephant man’ is the first play to actually only deal with the known facts about merrick’s final years in The London hospital, whitechapel and his complicated relationship with his doctor, Frederick Treves. with a cast of just two, the use of interactive video projections and a soundtrack consisting entirely of actual Victorian recordings, the popular Lucky Dog Theatre Productions bring their new show for 2015 to Bedfringe. theatre SANDMAN BY ADIE MUELLER AND MIKE CARTER
The woman before you needs your help. Spirits have somehow lodged themselves in her body. They speak through her of uncanny things: the fear of losing one’s eyes, dolls that come to life, sordid sexual desires and the Sandman who is out to get you. They tell the story of nathaniel, a student, who is visited by a mysterious, dread figure from his childhood and falls in love with a woman who isn’t all she seems. It seems no-one can prevent his life from spiralling out of control. haunted by their story the woman is compelled to exorcise it from her body. She needs you as a witness. She needs to hand the fragments of the story to you – for you to make sense of them. Are you ready to receive them and all that entails? Sandman is a new devised solo performance, created by Adie mueller and mike Carter and inspired by E.T.A. hoffmann’s gothic horror story ‘The Sandman’.

THE WAY WE HEAL
After mesmerising theatre lovers, connoisseurs and audiences, the critically-acclaimed and exciting spiritual production The way we heal, written by one of South Africa’s prolific and celebrated writers, Dr. mongane wally Serote and directed by Bogosi Bolokwe, is back in the theatre circuit. The way we heal is a play about a process of self realisation which can be painful as it demands change, acceptance and growth from within. African spiritualism has always had a negative impact. Throughout history the diviners have always been portrayed as being headshrinkers, negative beings that are primitive. These negative interpretations in the media and books only offer a one-sided rendition of the African medicine, an inaccurate portrayal of wise and gifted healers. Instead of accepting and embracing this ancient culture of spiritualism, urban people choose to accept these uninformed interpretations of the truth thus limiting spiritual growth.

Using a mixture of honest confessions and daring physical vocabulary, Chloe, Tess and Dan communicate their own fears about treading water, not quite meeting the mark, and being ‘too humble’. Performed by: Chloe Tasker, Daniel Potter and Tessa Palfrey. A Familiar Goodbye – with life moving at 100 miles an hour these days, we are forced into a constant state of grief.
