FRANCIS OF DELIRIUM Thur 15th Sept @ Esquires

Francis of Delirium is the alliance of two generations operating in the service of a certain vision of rock. One half of the band is Vancouver born Jana Bahrich, 19, who sings, writes songs and plays guitar with a fascination for 90s grunge – an era that she didn’t experience herself, but feels strongly connected to. Accompanying her on drums is Chris Hewett, a Seattle expat 30 years her senior. The Luxembourg-based duo formed after Jana became friends with some of her classmates, who played in a family band with their father: Chris. Their partnership can seem unusual, but it defi nitely makes sense, with both being creatively infl uenced by the grunge movement (especially Nirvana and Pearl Jam). ‘...the blueprint of something grand’ – Pitchfork ‘One of the best new bands of 2021’ – Stereogum ‘They meld genres spanning generations with ease’ – The Line of Best Fit
LOS BITCHOS Tue 20th September @ Esquires

Formed in 2017 over a mutual love of cumbia (Afro-Latin dancing music, laced with rock guitar), Los Bitchos are Australian Petale, ex-drummer of dreamy indie rockers Kid Wave on guitar; Uruguayan Agustina Ruiz on keytar; Swede Josefi ne Jonsson, once of garage rockers Thee MVPs, on bass; and Londoner and NHS physiotherapist Nic Crawshaw on drums. As the million-plus views on their KEXP live session attest, they’re a band who need to be experienced live, though they’ve bottled their lightning with debut album Let the Festivities Begin!, on which cumbia parties with Turkish and Middle Eastern

psych-rock and distorted, fuzzy surf-garage. It was produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand who provided vintage synths and razor-sharp discipline. Its music made by crate-diggers who aren’t chin-scratchers, whose laudable main ambition, as they told NME, is to “play all over the world and make people dance”.
With festival appearances confi rmed over Summer 2022 at Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Super Bock (Portugal), Bluedot, Latitude and End of the Road, it is quite the coup that Los Bitchos will be appearing at Esquires in September.
