Welcome to our new gardening feature! Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events. The gardening year is slowly passing us by and we are now into early autumn, but I love this time of the year, as we head into September you might feel like there’s not much to do in the garden compared to the busy spring and summer months, but I think it is the ideal time plant new plants and to divide existing plants while the soil is still warm, its moist and there’s less need to water as often as the days will be cooler. It's time to be thinking about your spring displays for next year and I don’t think you can ever have enough bulbs in the garden, now is the time to purchase them and there is always so much choice! Gives us something to look forward too and gives us so much promise. With autumn waiting in the wings, its ready to put on its performance and what a show it always is! keep a look out over the next few months as I will be sharing plants, we can grow in our gardens that give us stunning autumn colour. Here are some jobs to keep too busy this month... Happy Gardening Everyone! • You can feed your lawn with an autumn fertiliser now, which is rich in potassium and low in nitrogen. • To help pumpkins ripen in time for Halloween remove any leaves shadowing the fruits. • When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down. • Start planting autumn onion sets. • Create a new lawn from turf or seed - autumn weather is ideal for good lawn establishment. • Continue to feed and dead-head hanging basket and containers and they will keep flowering till the first frosts • Now is the time to buy and plant spring flowering bulbs • Plant hyacinth and amaryllis bulbs for forcing for an early display • Fill gaps in borders with autumn flowering plants such as Sedum, Aster, Chrysanthemum and Japanese Anemones to extend the colour to the end of the season. • Keep Camellias and Rhododendrons well-watered at this time of year to ensure that next year's buds develop well.

Tomato Challenge! This year I have had a few growing challenges between friends and family like the early potatoes, sunflowers and onion’s but during the summer I took on a tomato challenge with one of my fellow presenter’s at Erewash Sound radio to which I kept the listeners updated on our progress through our gardening show on Prime-Time Saturday Lunch. The plants had already been grown and passed onto me to grow on and these were heirloom tomato (also known as heritage tomato) they are open-pollinated and nonhybrid cultivar of tomato. Unfortunately, they usually have a shorter shelf life and less disease resistance than hybrids but they are grown for a variety of reasons: for food, access to wider varieties, historical interest, and by people who wish to save seeds from year to year, as well as for their taste. I have never had a go at growing these very different tomatoes' before but doing so I learnt so much about these heritage varieties the three varieties pictured here are ‘Tigerella’ ‘Ponderosa Pink’ and ‘Yellow Pear’. Have you ever had a go? Please get in touch if you have and pop a photo in there too! Would love to see your varieties. Contact details on next page.

Gardener Steve’s plant of the month. SEDUM SPECABLIE ‘AUTUMN JOY‘ (Stonecrop, Herbstfreude) Sedum is a perennial with thick, succulent leaves, fleshy stems, and clusters of star-shaped flowers. There are many types of Sedums, they all have different uses: such as low–growing varieties for ground covers and rock gardens and tall varieties for borders. Sedums are easy to care for and are good for cut flowers. Sedum Autumn Joy is a taller growing variety. Sedum specablie ‘Autumn Joy’ has succulent, lettuce-green leaves, topped with salmon-pink flower-heads in summer, maturing to pinkish-bronze then coppery-red in autumn. This is an ideal perennial as a filler plant for a sunny, well-drained spot in the front or middle of the border. A valuable source of nectar for butterflies and bees in late summer to early autumn , the dried flower heads provide structure and colour in the winter garden. Flowering period: Late Summer - Early Autumn Height and Spread: 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft). Soil: Any garden soil, well drained. Hardiness: Hardy. Propagation: By division in spring or by softwood cuttings of non-flowering shoots in early summer . Pruning: Chelsea chop technique in May, cut back after flowering or leave till spring as faded flowers give interest through the winter months Pest and Diseases: Slugs, snails and vine weevil can attack also root rot. Remember please keep getting in touch with your stories, photos, events, general gardening advice and help with plant identification just email me at gardenersteve24@ live.co.uk Look forward to hearing from you and see you all in October. Gardener Steve

Disposing of face coverings and PPE The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs published guidance for the public and businesses on how to dispose of their personal or business waste, including face coverings and PPE. Public guidance Dispose of them in the general waste (black) bin at home or at work, or a litter bin if outside, Do not put them in a recycling bin (green) as they cannot be recycled through conventional recycling facilities, Take them home if there is no litter bin – do not drop them as litter, Do not put them in an extra bag, Do not store them for a time before throwing them away.
18
Business guidance Provide extra bins for staff and customers to throw away their face coverings and PPE, and any other additional waste, such as takeaway packaging and disposable tableware. Remember that face coverings will be mandatory from 24th July at all times in shops and supermarkets. Make sure that staff and customers do not put face coverings and PPE in a recycling bin as they cannot be recycled through conventional recycling facilities, Make sure bins are emptied often so they do not overflow and create litter.

Ambitious Plans Tabled For Stapleford Regeneration. THE REGENERATION of Stapleford has moved a step closer after suggestions for how the £25m Towns Fund could be distributed were discussed by the town’s Executive Board. The key points of the plans – futureproofing the town’s high street, the creation of a cycle network, and improvements to community, leisure and recreation facilities – were tabled at the latest meeting (24 July), with the board agreeing on a long list of potential projects for the funding. One of the potential interventions discussed by the Stapleford Town Executive Board included redeveloping the public spaces around Walter Parker Square, as well as provisions for a new community leisure facility, with options including an off-road cycle track and active adventure play parks. The suggested projects will now be reviewed for their deliverability, before potentially being included in the Town Improvement Plan (TIP), which acts as a roadmap for the distribution of the £25m Towns Fund.
24
Paul Sweeney, vice chair of the Stapleford Town Deal Executive Board, said: “The proposals that have been brought to the table have the ability to create longlasting benefit for the community. This investment is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to realise the town’s great potential, forge a prosperous new future and build a lasting legacy.” Rebecca Ogden, major projects officer at Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “This meeting was a big step forward for the project, giving the Executive Board the opportunity to review the proposals in detail and work out how they can match the outcomes that are required by the government as part of the funding.” The proposals were developed by GT3 Architects following engagement with both the town’s Stakeholder Group and the wider public through the MyTowns portal, which allowed local residents to have their say on what they would like to see the money spent on. Liz Clarke, associate director at GT3 Architects, said: “It’s great news that the plans are taking another step forward. We received valuable feedback from the local community on our initial designs, which helped us to really solidify our proposal. As a company we believe that engagement with the community and stakeholders is vitally important - by involving participants they feel engaged and part of the process. “It was therefore a pleasure to present the scheme to the Executive Board and we are confident that the plans will make a tangible difference to Stapleford and its community.”

Did You Know? Certain types of flowers have “bee lines” that only bees can see, this is to direct them in. Bees actually have five eyes, but can’t see the colour red. Beeswax- is made in the abdomen of the bee, in what is called a “waxpocket”” - it’s chewed to soften, and then passed from worker bee to the other workers to build a honey comb. The Queen Bee, lives in only one hive for around 2-3 years. Only female workers and the Queen Bee can sting, they only do it when they feel frightened or threatened, or if their colony is under attack. In the height of Summer there is an average of 35 / 40,000 bees in the hive. Over the Winter this falls to around 5,000.

SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song "Get Down And Get With It" then, released in October of the same year "Coz I Luv You" was the band’s first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe. Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe's biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making

regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade's catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:"Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama We'er All Crazee Now", "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Gudbye T' Jane", along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the world’s biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down", which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. A second successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 60,000 people, consolidated the bands position and paved the way for the single "Lock Up Your Daughters", and the album "Til Deaf Do Us Part".

While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit "My Oh My" to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of "Cum On Feel The Noize", which proved so successful that they followed it up with "Mama Weer All Crazee Now". Throughout the start of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop'n'rock. The early nineties saw the bands "Radio Wall Of Sound" hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade members Dave Hill and Don Powell decided to return to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two month tour of Australia. SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK "Merry Christmas Everybody" tour in December. They have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Spain & France. Having just returned from a festival in Gibraltar, next stop is Greenland and Faroe Islands. Now in 2020, Led by founder member Dave Hill on Lead Guitar with John Berry who joined in 2003 on Lead Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar and Violin. John has also played Bass with Mud, The Sweet, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Tremeloes, Bay City Rollers & The Rubettes. Joining
John on Lead Vocals and Keys is Russell Keefe, having played in many original bands in his early years, he has also recorded albums for Polygram & United Artists, Russell has toured with The Pretty Things and Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers, Alex Bines now joins on Drums, Alex has toured with Wilko Johnson, The Rubettes and is also a Drum teacher. Slade today is still one of the most exciting bands on the road, and their stage performance is a dynamic, powerful and exhilarating roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated rock'n'roll. Slade are: Dave Hill, John Berry, Russell Keefe, and Alex Bines. A date for your diary, Slade are back for Christmaaaas!

Hospice at Home nurses benefit from £4k donation Treetops Hospice Care has received a donation of £4000 to purchase laptops fortheir Hospice at Home nurses to support care provision and their wellbeing. The generous donor has been a long-term supporter of the hospice which provides nursing care and emotional support for adults with life-limiting conditions such ascancer, motor neurone disease, and heart and respiratory conditions. The laptops will prove invaluable to the team of forty Treetops Hospice Care nursesand healthcare assistants who provide vital end of life care to patients in their ownhomes, across South Derbyshire and South Nottinghamshire. Hospice at Home Manager, Teresa Smith, explained the difference the laptops will make:“By the nature of their role, our nurses do not work from an office. They live and workout in the community and are distance-managed. “By providing the team with laptops - with appropriate security systems - they can work much more efficiently. They will have direct access to their patients’ details, they will be able to receive updates of a patient’s care needs before attending a shift, and can type up their handover notes directly onto the system. “The laptops will also enable us to provide more support for the team. At present, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we’re unable to host our normal team meetings and training sessions. With the laptops, we can start virtual sessions.” The Treetops Hospice at Home Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days per

year – even while the Coronavirus pandemic is taking place. Nurses are availableduring the daytime and overnight, enabling family members and carers to take a break or get a good night’s sleep. Last year, Hospice at Home nurses provided over 28,000 hours of care across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Liz Docker, Treetops Hospice at Home nurse, explained how vital the service is right now: “The patients we go out to support have got a life-limiting illness. They are reaching the end of their life and that would be happening anyway, whether there is COVID-19 “As a carer looking after somebody’s who’s very ill, it’s extremely difficult at home. It can be very stressful and really tiring, and nobody can keep caring for 24 hours a day. Nights can be especially difficult for carers. “We arrive at the house and get to know the patient, get to know the family – and then the family can go and get a good night’s sleep and we do everything that’s needed during the night.” Liz explained how the Coronavirus pandemic is affecting the service: “We’re used to going into these situations where people are very, very ill and where the family is very stressed, but we have got this extra risk going on at the moment. “There is a level of anxiety amongst us because this is a situation that we’ve not had to deal with before but the hospice is doing everything they can to provide us with PPE. “This is not the time to stop giving the care that we give. That’s just the kind of people we are - we’re going to keep going until it’s physically impossible to.”

GRAPEVINE OFFER WIN A SIGNED COPY OF SUNBIRDS DEBUT ALBUM The Beautiful South Founder Member Dave Hemingway announces October Release For ‘SUNBIRDS’ Debut Album. The Beautiful South founder member Dave Hemingway has announced that his new band Sunbirds will release their debut album ‘Cool To Be Kind’ on 30th October 2020 on the independent label Nectar Records. Having retired from the live scene at the back end of 2016, Dave has been keeping busy with guitarist, songwriter and collaborator Phil Barton, with Cool To Be Kind signalling the arrival of the new band, new songs and a new sound. The music Sunbirds make takes on board all of the bands and artists Dave and Phil have loved over the years. It chiefly blends the musical instruments of rural America with an occasional twist of grungy guitars and sets them against lyrics that remain very much at home in the towns and cities of England. “Although a lot of the songs have a Country feel.” says Dave. “They’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pickup trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.” Produced by cult producer Teo Miller, who was responsible for Daisy Chainsaw’s breakthrough single ‘Love Your Money’
40
and subsequently worked with The Pretenders, Placebo and Robert Plant, the album captures truthful, open-hearted, funny and sometimes painfully honest songs, turning the page to a new chapter for Dave Hemingway and The Beautiful South story. The formation of Sunbirds also sees the introduction of new discovery Laura Wilcockson on vocals and violin. Laura comes from a classical/orchestral, as well as folk background. If you’re lucky, you might spot her busking around Mansfield. Completing the four-piece line-up is session drummer to the stars, Marc Parnell. His CV has way too many names to go into here.

Cool To Be Kind is the result of a few transitional years in Dave and Phil’s individual personal worlds. It tells tales that cover contemporary themes as well as age-old matters of the heart and soul - all viewed through the bottom of a recently drained pint glass. “There’s no exact science here,” says Phil. “We’re just enjoying ourselves and expressing whatever we want, whether it’s about love, greed, social isolation or Gary Lineker’s crisp adverts”. Cool To Be Kind’ - album track listing: 1. Meet You On The Northside 2. Hatred Lies In The Ruins Of Love 3. Holiday Monday 4. Gene Kelly 5. Insert Answer Here 6. The Black Sea 7. When I’m Gone 8. Broxtowe Borough Honours Merchant Navy. The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Janet Patrick, has raised the Red Ensign outside the Council Offices to mark the Merchant Navy Day -3rd September. This is the third consecutive year that the Council supports the campaign. The Mayor of Broxtowe raising the Merchant Navy Day flag “Today we all together support this campaign by Seafarers UK to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy, who ensure that food, fuel and clothing are carried safely in our ships. Too often they are the forgotten or seen as an invisible service. This day we all remember them by raising this Red Ensign Flag. Our act will mean so much to their families and to the retired, but most especially of those at Sea,” said Councillor Janet Patrick. At the same time, hundreds of places across Britain also took part in Seafarers UK's Fly the Red Ensign campaign, to honour those who kept our island nation afloat during both world wars, and to celebrate the modern day Merchant Navy seafarers who are responsible for 95 per cent of the UK’s imports, including essential food, fuel and clothing. Since the start of this century, 3rd September has been the UK’s designated Merchant Navy Day.
actually increased. 95% of our imports are carried by ship. Without regular fuel imports our power stations would soon shut down. And with more sea ports and harbours and a longer coastline than any other European country, we depend on the Merchant Navy to ship more than 75% of our exports. The campaign to raise the Red Ensign across the nation each year on this day has been organised by Seafarers UK. Seafarers UK helps people in the maritime community by providing funding to support seafarers in need and their families. Beeston in the lead for Skateboarding Spaces, Youth Culture and Creativity. Facilities for Skate Boarding could come to Beeston – Inspired by a government grant won by community group Skate Nottingham and educational charity Ignite! It envisages skateboard-friendly sculptures in Beeston and across the Borough - designed and built by local young people and school children, in the run-up to next year’s Olympics
“Our vision is to identify local areas that could benefit from these installations - teaming up with youth groups and schools to create them. Skateboarding is a free, healthy, social activity for all ages - especially the young, who so often encounter barriers to participating in things they can enjoy and learn from - so this will really help our entire community” – said project lead Chris Lawton from Nottingham Trent University.
Nottingham is one of the original homes of UK skateboarding - with a 50-year history in a sport that will join the Olympics for the first time in Tokyo. Our area may also be represented in Tokyo by local professional skateboarder - Skateboard GB team-member Alex Halford.
The idea is influenced by similar projects across Scandinavia and also City Mill – envisaged by, University College London and Goldsmith University - engaging participants to design a ‘trail’ of ‘skate dots’ leading into the new UCL East Campus in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Skateboarding is unique in encouraging young people to develop expertise in sport and complementary creative interests like design, film and photography - Beeston could be part of it. Imagine a community whereby the skills developed by our local young people involve them from ‘the ground up’. These could start with building wooden ramps with friends before progressing into careers in civil engineering or landscape, the built environment and architecture inspiring future generations. Simultaneously bringing under-used outdoor spaces to life, temporarily or longer-term.
Like the Beeston proposals, City Mill aims to encourage a more diverse range of young people to use the spaces. City Mill will not come to fruition until 2022 - but our project here in Beeston could happen within a matter of months! Endorsed by Beeston Civic Society their Secretary, Mervyn Brown, commented: “The idea is sensational - it has really kicked off something that has realistic potential to succeed at so many levels. World recognition for Beeston. Inspirational from concept to completion – socially Inclusive, with health and fitness benefits - adding value to our community”.

So far, the scheme has supported over 300 residents and 250 landlords. Councils across Nottinghamshire are working together to promote the Call B4 you Serve service, as concerns grow that there will be a spike in evictions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.Tenancy agreement with house keys Call B4 you Serve is an independent service funded across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire by Central Government and provides an impartial service to both landlords and tenants to prevent evictions where ever possible. The service can offer advice on financial support including help with payments towards rent arrears if someone is in danger of becoming homeless. The service also provides direct support and advice on benefit applications around universal credit and other housing and rent support. The team can help set up applications and make sure applicants are getting the full support needed.

One of the council’s priorities is to reduce poverty and inequality in the borough as well as providing support for the most vulnerable people in the area. Landlords or Letting Agents who need help can email CB4YS@derby.gov.uk or call 01332 641 408. Tenants facing difficulty can call Broxtowe Borough Council’s Housing Options Team on 0115 917 7777 for a referral to the service. Councillor Teresa Cullen Chair of the Housing Committee, Councillor Teresa Cullen said: “The coronavirus outbreak has created significant financial pressures for many vulnerable people which could result in eviction from their homes. We are urging landlords to call us before they serve eviction notices. We can work with all parties to assist find solutions that can prevent someone becoming homeless. We have assisted a number of landlords already, which has prevented evictions and ultimately another homeless person or family. It is one of our main priorities to support the most vulnerable residents in Broxtowe and prevent rough sleeping and homelessness.”

Care and Support at Home – The Ongoing Normal? As we move away from some challenging few months it is time to reflect on the impact COVID-19 has had on the care sector and particularly on care at home. We know that we are not yet “over” this pandemic and indeed, that some of the changes taken place are likely to continue and perhaps become permanent therefore leading us into the ongoing normal.
our CAREGivers were there to provide much needed companionship, care and support. We are very proud of the commitment and dedication shown by our CAREGivers.
Although at Home Instead we have always had a contingency plan in place, like many others, it was not set up to deal with all aspects of a pandemic. Nevertheless, we quickly adapted to the changing demands and put in place processes which allowed us to deal with every aspect of care and support. At the heart of what we do is the safety and wellbeing of our clients and CAREGivers therefore the ability to quickly implement advice from Public Health England and minimise risk was key. As the lockdown arrived, the CAREGivers’ role developed beyond the day to day care and support. They started providing support with cutting toenails, washing and cutting hair, carrying out all the shopping, collecting medication, etc. Although this was something we did for many before COVID, it extended to almost everybody.
As the requirement for use of PPE changed we faced the challenge of obtaining sufficient supplies of gloves, aprons and masks. Although at times the cost of PPE escalated by 100% and more, we managed to stay ahead and were never at risk of running out. For a couple of months now our CAREGivers have been using, and will continue to use, full PPE for all visits. In addition, they follow strict sanitising guidelines upon arrival, during and after a visit. Given the lockdown and the fact that relatives could not visit we started introducing technology, which was already in use by other Home Instead offices, to facilitate communication. By using a tablet which was developed with the elderly in mind, some of our clients had access to their favourite music, could easily start video sessions with relatives and in turn, relatives could upload photographs and information. Something similar has now been done for medication where again, by using technology, records of administered medication can be maintained and accessed remotely. This also allows us and relatives to confirm that medication has been administered.
Given that relatives were not able to visit their loved ones, CAREGivers also became the main source of emotional and social support. Many of our Clients could have experienced isolation due to the lack of contact with others but
As the pressure on local services such as GPs and district nurses grew we started looking at health activities which have not traditionally been carried out by CAREGivers. Activities such as wound care or catheter care can also

Hospice suspends plans for Bedded Unit amid Coronavirus pandemic. Leading Derbyshire hospice, Treetops Hospice Care, has announced the difficult decision to suspend plans to build a 12 bedded In-Patient Unit on site at Risley. The decision was made after the hospice identified an increasing demand for palliative care for patients in their own homes and a need to concentrate fundraising efforts on existing care services. Treetops, based in Risley, provides nursing care and emotional support for adults with life-limiting conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart and respiratory conditions. The charity provides care for over 1,800 patients and their families each year and all services are provided free of charge. Treetops launched an Emergency Appeal in March, planning for the worst possible financial outcome, as Julie Heath, Treetops chief executive, explained: “During lockdown we had to temporarily close all our retail shops and cancel several major fundraising events which had a significant impact on our finances. Our Emergency Appeal generated donations from wonderful supporters far and wide. We also received contributions from businesses and trusts, alongside the emergency Government grant. With this generous support, we are able to continue to offer our services to the local community – for now – but our challenge is far from over.
56
We are still unable to organise fundraising events for large groups of people. A drop in footfall on the high street is affecting our newly-reopened shops and Government funding will end soon. We are urging all our supporters to continue to help us at this time.” The hospice has seen an increase in requests for their Hospice at Home Service, providing nursing care at home for terminally-ill patients at the very end of life:
Julie Heath Treetops Executive
“We anticipate that demand for our Treetops nurses will continue for the foreseeable future and in a post-COVID world. “We’ve always prided ourselves on good stewardship and so our priority remains to ensure financial security and provide certainty that Treetops will be here for patients and their families right now, and for many years to come. Unfortunately, this means we simply cannot afford to build and run a bedded unit at this time. It remains our aspiration to one day provide end-of-life beds for the local community. We will embark on this again when our current services are secure.”

The ‘Lime Tree Appeal’ to build the bedded unit had generated donations and pledges of over £1million. Donors have been advised of the postponed plans and asked if they would like to direct their support to the Treetops COVID-19 Appeal or other Treetops services. During lockdown, the hospice adapted it’s services to continue to care for the most vulnerable patients in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Weekly Wellbeing calls and ‘Cake and Care’ packages are provided to up to 70 patients. Bereavement counselling sessions are being held via telephone and video calls. And a new ‘Roaming Nurse Service’ supports up to 50 additional patients each week with a registered nurse and healthcare assistant responding to calls for help with symptom or pain management. Can you give some hens a home? Ilkeston Fresh Start For Hens. Article by Dee. So, the volunteers have been up since 5.30am, it’s now 7.30 and up to 4000 girls are all crated and ready for the off All around the country collection points are preparing for the glorious havoc of up to 200 hens arriving on their doorstep. The drivers aim to leave the farm, all barns now empty, by 7.30am. Many of our vast commercial farmers are down south and hens are travelling as far as Anglesey and Edinburgh so a prompt departure is important. In most cases these hens have lived in a pretty ghastly environment. Many are featherless and almost all horribly pale due to lack of sunshine, oh and underweight as well. These are commercial hens, a farmer will feed them only the necessary to lay that egg a day, there’s no room for sentiment here. Fresh Start for Hens is incredibly well organised. Collection points will have been advertising the rehoming and directing folk to the fsfh website to reserve. Just a paltry £2.50 donation per girl. This pays A.The farmer (£1 as he would from slaughter house, actually we pay a little more per bird). B. The hire of the many vans. C.The fuel costs. Collection points all over the country gear up for a busy & exciting day This year alone fsfh have rehomed 45,000 hens with another 40,000 offered! PLEASE consider having a few of these glorious creatures as pets. You will NOT regret it Please get the word out and share Ilkeston Fresh Start for Hens on FB

December Handover Announced For Beeston Cinema Project Beeston's new cinema will be handed over to it’s operators before the end of the year, as the team behind the project provided an update on its progress. The eight-screen cinema – which will be operated by Arc Cinema – forms part of the wider Beeston Square redevelopment, which will include an eight-screen cinema, 132 new homes and a range of food and drink outlets. Progress on the cinema had been slowed by the Coronavirus pandemic, which caused delays in the building work and the delivery of materials to site.Despite this, the cinema will be ready for fit-out in December, with the opening date now projected to be June 2021. Councillor Steve Carr, deputy leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “The project is progressing really well. COVID held it up for around five weeks, but the on-site team have been able to make up a lot of the time in recent weeks. “The handover to Arc Cinema is now likely to be in December, at which point
62
the operator will fit it out and make it ready for opening. Beeston is one of the few deluxe Arc Cinemas in the UK and we’re delighted to be welcoming them to the Borough. “There isn’t currently a single cinema in Broxtowe – they are all in the city. With our student population, the nighttime economy in Beeston should be a lot better than it is, and the Council see this development as an opportunity to boost business in the town and regenerate the wider area.” Mike Atkinson, contracts manager at Bowmer + Kirkland said: “We are extremely proud to be involved in this prestigious project for Broxtowe Borough Council. We are a local family owned company and we are delighted that we have been entrusted by Broxtowe with the development of the town centre. “We have worked hard alongside the Council and our partners on site to ensure progress has continued to be made despite the challenges of recent times.” Despite the impact the pandemic has had on the food and beverage industry, the team behind the project is working on meanwhile uses for the remaining units on the site to provide activity and footfall, helping to get the cinema off to the best start and supporting existing businesses in Beeston town centre as they recover from lockdown. For more information on the scheme and to view the designs, visit our Beeston Square Development page, Broxtowe Borough Council.

Method Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Grease and base-line three 20cm/8in loose-bottomed round cake tins with baking grease proof paper. 1.Put the butter, sugar, salt and lemon zest into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and beat until pale & fluffy. 2. Gradually beat in the eggs, one at a time, adding a spoonful of flour occasionally to prevent the mixture from splitting. 3. Fold in the rest of the flour and the ground almonds, then fold inthe elderflower cordial. 4. Divide the mixture equally between the three tins and bake for 20–25 minutes until risen and golden. (To test that the cakes are cooked, insert a cocktail stick or skewer into the centre; if it comes out clean the cakes are ready). 5.Transfer the tins to a wire rack and use a cocktail stick or small skewer to prick holes all over the surface of the sponges. 6.Mix together the elderflower cordial and lemon juice and spoon over the sponges. 7.Leave to soak and cool in the tins for 30 minutes, then turn out and leave to cool completely. 8.Meanwhile, to make the buttercream, beat the butter in a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or use an electric hand whisk) until soft. 9.Gradually beat in the icing sugar until pale and fluffy, then beat in the cream and elderflower cordial. (Take care not to over-beat the mixture as it can split.) 10.Put a spoonful of buttercream onto a cake stand or serving plate, then lay one of the sponges on top (if they’ve peaked slightly during baking, trim with a bread knife to flatten the tops).
11.Spread the sponge with a little of the buttercream then lay a second sponge on top. Repeat this layering process then spoon the remaining buttercream on top of the cake. 12.Use a palette knife to spread the buttercream over the tops and sides of the cake in an even layer. 13.Finally turn the cake whilst holding a palette knife down the side to scrape away some of the buttercream so the sponge is visible underneath. 14. Decorate with fruit and (fresh flowers ) and serve.
