• Many DEFRA exempt appliances are multi-fuel use and can be used with smokeless fuels such as smokeless briquettes etc.

• To minimise smoke, where wood is burnt in an exempted appliance, it should have a moisture content of less than 20%. This means if you use foraged wood, you must ensure it has been dried out properly before use. If you are buying wood from a supplier, look for the woodsure ready to burn logo and keep it in a cool dry place before use.

• If you are using an open fire, ensure you use a smoke free fuel. Logs cannot be used on an open fire in a smoke control area, they can only be burnt on an appliance exempted by DEFRA for burning wood.

Energy Bills Are Rising . Advice on using open fires and log burners.

• If you are using your open fire or log or multi-fuelled burner for the first time in a while, ensure the chimney or flue has been swept and is clear. Always ensure you have a working carbon monoxide detector in any rooms with a solid fuel appliance to keep you and your family safe.

If you are planning to use a log burner or open fire, please consider the following to minimise eﬀects on health, neighbours and the environment:

• Never burn pallets, old fencing, furniture or treated wood as it is treated with chemicals which can release toxins when burnt.

There’s a limit on how much smoke you can release from a chimney you can only burn authorised fuel, unless you use an ‘exempt appliance’ In England you may have to pay a penalty of up to £300 if your local council decides your chimney releases too much smoke. You can be fined up to £1,000 if you burn unauthorised fuel without an exempt appliance.

Most of Broxtowe Borough is a Smoke Control Area. This means that you should only use log burners or appliances that are exempted by DEFRA, with the correct fuel and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

But then again next year's spring bulb catalogue has arrived and it's always such a great read, these are the bulbs that we buy and plant now which will then give us our beautiful spring Septemberdisplays.isalovely month in the garden, still giving lots of colour hopefully after the incredibly dry summer and the heat wave's we have had?. I do hope your gardens are starting to recover and your grass starting to green up! I know my garden is getting there slowly. Our gardens and plants deserve medals don't you think? they’re tough old boots really!! This month is also a little more relaxed compared to the busy months of spring and summer, but it is the ideal time plant new plants and to divide existing plants while the soil is still warm, and there’s less need to water as the days will be cooler.

• You can feed your lawn with an autumn fertiliser now, which is rich in potassium and low in nitrogen.

• To help pumpkins ripen in time for Halloween remove any leaves shadowing the fruits.

• When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down.

Sedum is a perennial with thick, succulent leaves, fleshy stems, and clusters of star-shaped flowers. There are many types of Sedums, they all have diﬀerent uses: such as low–growing varieties for ground covers and rock gardens and tall varieties for borders. Sedums are easy to care for and are good for cut flowers. Sedum Autumn Joy is a taller growing variety. Sedum specablie ‘ Autumn Joy’ has succulent, lettuce-green leaves, topped with salmon-pink flower-heads in summer, maturing to pinkish-bronze then coppery-red in autumn. This is an ideal perennial as a filler plant for a sunny, well-drained spot in the front or middle of the border. A valuable source of nectar for butterflies and bees in late summer to early autumn , the dried flower heads provide structure and colour in the winter

A highly successful Music-at-thon at Beeston Methodist Church raised more than £4,000 towards the restoration and modernisation of the splendid 1902 pipe organ. Seventy five local musicians, including organists, a string trio, vocalists, pianists, a flute quartet, folk musicians, a trumpet trio, three choirs and a baroque ensemble, performed in half hour slots throughout the day and night, filling the church with music for 24 hours.The event culminated with a special Sunday morning service on August 21, attended by Broxtowe MP Darren Henry and his wife Caroline.Organiser Fiona Fyfe said: “The music-a thon was a great success and enjoyed by all involved – whether playing, listening or helping behind the scenes. It was wonderful to be able to fill the church with an incredible variety of music. We are so grateful to all the performers and the many volunteers, who made the event possible.

“As well as raising more than £4,000 through donations and sponsorship, we were delighted by the number of people who came into the church to listen and support the performers. For some it was their first visit to Beeston Methodist Church.”

The next fundraising event is a craft fair at the church on Saturday, October 15th 2022 from 10am to 3pm. A wide range of crafts will be on view at the 18 stalls with refreshments and light lunches available through the day.

The music-a-thon was the latest in a rolling programme of fundraising events that have included organ recitals, garden parties, a quiz and a sponsored walk. Funeral arranger Hannah puts the care into career as she settles in at Gillotts.

Funeral arranger Hannah Chapman has just completed her first six months at Eastwood-based Gillotts, which operates four branches across the county and another across the border in Heanor.

She said: “The funeral firm which looked after my dad were brilliant. We wanted a church service where people wore bright colours so that it wouldn’t be a traditional funeral but a fitting occasion where we celebrated his life.Before that, and before working at Gillotts, my understanding of funeral homes was very different to what it actually is and I didn’t realise how unique funerals can be.

Then the loss of her own father to cancer last year led her to arrange his funeral with an all-female funeral firm, whose care and attention during the process showed her that this might be the industry for her. This prompted her to apply for a role at Gillotts when a vacancy and the rest, as they say, is history.

Her last role was as a stock manager for the high street bath and beauty products firm Lush, but she has also spent time as an English teacher in Italy, a waitress and a student ambassador, having studied Italian at university. Although all of them were roles that involved working with people and she enjoyed her work at Lush, Hannah says that she was still searching for a job that was more people-focussed and more about helping others.

Hannah is based at the company’s Stapleford branch, where her role involves meeting the families, finding out what arrangements they would like and helping the company’s director in Stapleford, Alan Winfield, to put everything together.

I have also learned that the process of organising a funeral can be just as important as the funeral itself. Alternatives - You could use a packet of cooked peeled prawns and add at least three minutes before the end. Or chopped cooked chicken, mushrooms and peas.

2. Cover the bowl with cling film and pierce a couple of holes in it with a knife. Microwave the rice for 10 minutes at 750W. Tear off the cling film and stir everything,then return the uncovered bowl to the microwave for another 12-15 minutes until the rice is done.

People of state pension age are being urged to check if they are entitled to Pension Credit as new data reveals 7% of over 65s say they are close to a financial crisis. Findings from a recent YouGov poll of 2033 UK adults, of which 535 were over 65, commissioned by the national poverty charity, Turn2us, also found that 22% of people over the age of 65 say they feel more anxious as a direct result of the rising cost of living. In addition, 48% say they would not know how to get support from an organisation offering advice around finances and debt.
