Editor’s Note Hello everyone, Unfortunately I’ve had to remove the For Sale page this month due to the Corona Virus, as we all have to stay in, and stay safe, so I have put it on hold until next month. Good news: We have a winner for the Sunbirds albumMiss. P from Wollaton, the album will be posted from the band themselves. For the Slade concert I shall be in touch with the selected winner quite soon as it’s now been postponed until next year). Until next time stay safe!

HOW TO MAKE A FACE MASK We all know that we have to wear face masks in this current pandemic. There are exceptions of course, very young children and people with medical conditions etc, but how about making your own face mask? Some that you can wash regularly. Making a face covering is really simple.Face coverings can be made from things we all have in our homes, the most effective being a pillow case, an old sheet, duvet cover, or any old cotton t-shirt you may have lying around. You need a fabric that’s a good for filtration, breathability and comfort. And a few inches of elastic. Two layers is slightly more effective than one, and with just one pillow case will make approx six two layer masks. There is a brilliant website with clear instructions and advice on how to make them, it also offers some great advice: www.the bigcommunity sew.co.uk (Any fans of the Great Britsh Sewing Bee will be pleased to see Patrick Grant taking part ).For those of you who are not on the internet and would like to make your own: You will need : 1.Your chosen cotton fabric, (avoid stretchy or unbreathable fabrics) 2.Pins 3. Fabric scissors 4. A sewing machine or you can sew by hand with needle and thread 5. Two lengths of elastic 15cm long or you can use two hair elastics. For ear loops , you will need approx 1/4 wide elastic (or ribbon )For ties to go around the head make sure it ‘s long enough to go around your head twice.

10

Step 1: Cut out 25cm x 25cm squares of cotton fabric. Stack the squares on top of each other. Step 2: Fold over one side by 0.75cm and hem, then repeat on the opposite side. Make 2 channels by folding the double layer of fabric over 1.5cm along each side and stitching this down. Step 3: Run a 20cm length of elastic (or string or cloth strip) through the wider hem on each side of the face covering. These will be the ear loops. Use a large needle to thread it through. Tie the ends tightly.

Step 4: Gently pull on the elastic so that the knots are tucked inside the hem. Gather the sides of the covering on the elastic and adjust so the covering fits your face. Then securely stitch the elastic in place to keep it from slipping. These elastic loops fit over the ears. Government advice/warning : Face coverings should not be used by children under the age of 3 or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly. For example, primary age children unassisted, or those with respiratory conditions. Children should only follow these instructions under the supervision of adult.

Message from Councillor Richard MacRae. Both Councillor Don Pringle and myself have been helping the residents in Trowell with regards the flooding issues around Boundary Brook. We can now announce that a successful bid for ÂŁ187,500 has been approved and this will mean much need help and support for the residents will now be able to take place. I would like to thank both The Environment Agency and Councillor Don Pringle for all working together on this project. The Environment Agency (EA) have been successful in a bid for Local Levy funding from the Trent Regional Flood and Coastal Committee. They have bid for ÂŁ7,500 per property for a maximum of 25 properties to offer Property Flood Resilience (PFR) products. The next stage is to undertake appraisal work to support a business case which will go to independent assurance. The EA have identified eligible properties and will shortly be making contact with residents to invite them along to an online event and outline their proposal. Councillor Richard MacRae Stapleford North Ward, Stapleford Town Council, Broxtowe Borough Council @CllrRichMacRae

Would you like to join the Stapleford WI? Lockdowns, furloughs and staycations? These are all new words to our everyday vocabulary! 2020 has certainly been a challenge for everyone, but at Stapleford WI we are feeling proud of ourselves. When circumstances cut across our exciting programme earlier in the year, we had two choices: give up or adapt and thrive, and at Stapleford WI we love a challenge! Instead of defeat, our small and friendly group decided to get busy and creative, so if you think you know the WI, think again! Even through lockdown our ladies stepped up and continued to collect donations for the local food bank at Montrose Court. Supporting the #EndChildFoodPoverty campaign we organised a special ‘baby bank’ collection and gave over 150 knitted hats to the QMC for their Neonatal appeal. Hearing about the impact and increase of domestic violence during the lockdown we decided to buddy-up with the Broxtowe Women’s Project. We made & filled beautiful wash bags with toiletries which were donated to the local charity who work with women experiencing domestic abuse in our community. We’re currently in the process of compiling our own cookbook with homespun recipes from the kitchens of our members. The cookbooks will be sold to raise funds for our Sunshine Fund which supports the wellbeing of our own members. On top of all the newsletters, magazines and quizzes that you’d expect from the WI we also have a full Zoom programme of monthly speakers ranging from: historical stories from Southwell Workhouse and life on a dairy farm to living on a narrowboat and learning all about the beneficial effects of Aloe Vera. It’s not just about jam and Jerusalem these days. To finish off we have a great value membership offer. Only £10.75 until the end of March 2021. That works out at less than the cost of a posh coffee each month: to get involved, make some friends and learn something new. So there really has never been a better time to join Stapleford WI. (see the form on the opposite page). If you are interested in becoming a member and want to have a friendly chat and find out a bit more about the things we do, then please contact Jane the Secretary via our Facebook page or Heidi the President at www.staplefordwi.com or @Staplefordwi on Twitter. We’ d love you to say hello!

The Statue of Liberty used to be a lighthouse. About a month after the statue’s 1886 dedication, it became a working lighthouse for 16 years, with it’s torch visible from 24 miles away. The Eiffel Tower was originally intended for Barcelona. The Spanish city thought the design was ugly, so Gustave Eiffel pitched it to Paris instead, as a temporary landmark during its 1889 International Exposition. (The French critics didn’t like it much either).

Faces of Nottingham by Peter McConnochie - New book out now!

Throughout its history, the city of Nottingham has been associated with Robin Hood, lace making and bicycles. However, there’s more to Nottingham than lace and legends. In 2015, the city was named ‘Home of English Sport’ and in the same year was named a UNESCO City of Literature, one of only a handful in the world. Today the city is a thriving hub of retail and commerce, with many independent shops and buzzing bars and cafés, and boasts two successful universities. Local photographer Peter McConnochie lives here and knows the city’s streets and squares, it’s lanes and alleyways. Charged with capturing the essence of Nottingham, he has turned his camera on it’s inhabitants, the people who make it what it is today. These are the people you’ll find in these pages: shopkeepers, school teachers, businessmen and women, nurses, buskers, restaurant owners, students, and street performers, all of whom take pleasure in being a part of this vibrant city and sharing their stories. To purchase a copy - £14.99 from shops or £13.49 online from : Amberley Books: Tel: 01453 847823 Web: http://www.amberley-books.com/ Facebook.com/amberleybooks Twitter: @amberleybooks *Grapevine Editors note: “I have this book and it opens up Nottingham in a more personal and diverse way. Nottingham is a great city and in these hard times, it’s refreshing to read about some of the people who live and work in this city. (What came to my mind was that these photographs were taken well before the current wave of Covid 19, a Nottingham before lockdown). Peter McConnochie has captured through his lens, everyday people, it’s a unique book, and interestingly enough, I think in years to come, will become in it’s own right, an historical record of life in our wonderful city”.

Article by Mitchell Wilde Solicitors in Beeston. If you have a business with people working in it you need to think about the legal aspects. Written Statement of Employment Particulars Whilst having a formal employment contract is not required (although it is highly recommended), all employees and workers must be provided with a written document detailing the main terms of their employment irrespective of how long they will be employed for. This document is known as ‘a written statement of employment particulars’. You must give this to them on or before their first day of work. The contents of such a notice are set out in legislation and include details of pay, hours and days of work and holiday entitlement and many others aspects of the employment. Contractors or Employees? It is not always easy to be sure who is self-employed. You need to be aware of the legal distinction between employees and subcontractors. Workers and employees are entitled to substantially more rights than subcontractors. There have been recent high-profile cases of people claiming they are employees when the businesses who engaged them considered them subcontractors. In order to minimise the risk of claims from subcontractors who claim to be employees, businesses must take care as to how they treat their subcontractors in practice. For example, allowing contractors to use the business’ equipment for free or paying them a salary irrespective of the performance of the business may suggest they are an employee. It is not as simple as having the contractor sign a document headed ‘subcontractor agreement’ or inserting a clause into the subcontractor agreement. Any court considering whether the parties are employees or subcontractors will focus primarily on the substance of the relationship. You need to be careful to treat your subcontractors as genuine subcontractors and not as employees. 36

Care and Support at Home – Coronavirus & Dementia By Primo Sule from Home Instead in Beeston. Since the lockdown started in March and despite it easing a couple of months ago, we have all been affected one way or another by the restrictions on movement and contact with others. The impact on people living on their own and especially those living with dementia is only now being acknowledged. Recent surveys and investigations reveal the shocking side effects of lockdown. An investigation carried out by the Alzheimer’s Society involving almost 2,000 respondents shows that since being forced to stay isolated and inside their homes more than 82% reported deterioration. Around half reported increased memory loss (50%) and difficulty concentrating (48%). More than a quarter had seen a loss in the ability to do daily tasks, like cooking or dressing (28%). Our experience shows that lack of exercise has also had a detrimental effect on mobility. Despite encouraging people to exercise within the home those we support are now finding it difficult to walk even short distances. A trip to the local shops or going out for a coffee helped many to get some fresh air and socialise as well as exercise but during lockdown this was not possible. As we start reintroducing the routines that existed before lockdown we are now encouraging our Clients to go out, even for short walks, as much as possible. As we take Clients out, observing some of the rules regarding face coverings can be a challenge. The distancing requirement means that the person being supported will sit in the back seat and both the Client and the CAREGiver will wear a mask. People living with dementia might have difficulty in understanding why they should cover their face so patience and clear and simple language is required when explaining the reasons behind it. We know that sometimes the texture and feel of the covering could be causing discomfort so it is worth trying different styles and textures. Finding a favourite scarf to use as a covering or, as we have suggested to our CAREGivers, making a covering as part of a home activity can be fun and reduce any anxiety those living with dementia might be experiencing. When asking somebody to wear a face covering try putting your covering on in front of the person and encouraging them to mirror this. Also make sure that it is done somewhere quiet as opposed to at the entrance of a busy supermarket or bus stop. Rather than talking about a pandemic when asking them to wear face covering mention that this is similar to having flu (something they have experienced and might remember) and that wearing the mask reduces the risk of infection. If despite trying different approaches the person with dementia refuses to wear face covering please bear in mind that the rules governing face covering in public places do not apply to people living with dementia if there is a “reasonable excuse”

Look out for your neighbours People in Broxtowe are being encouraged to keep looking out for their neighbours as the winter nights draw in. Residents in Broxtowe went out of their way to look out for their friends, family and neighbours whilst we were all in lockdown. Sparing five minutes of your time and being considerate at home could make the world of difference to your neighbours.

garden or on balconies can disrupt others around you. Avoid bonfires - Coronavirus is known to cause serious respiratory problems, which could be made much worse with exposure to smoke from bonfires. Be a little more tolerant - With more of us staying at home, there will be more noise from children playing in the garden, or neighbours using this time to do some DIY. Try to be more tolerant of them.

Say hello - If you haven’t seen your neighbours in a while, or you know that they live alone, please find a way to say hello. Just talking can make a huge difference to how you and others feel and you might be able to easily help them with something that they’ve been struggling with. Even knowing someone cares can mean a lot. Make sure you follow all social distancing guidelines.

Clean up after yourself - If you’ve been in a communal area, or taken your daily walk, please take any litter home with you. Don’t dump bulky waste - Please be considerate to your neighbours and don’t leave dumped items for others to clear up. Dumped items cause a health and safety risk for you and your neighbours, especially at this time.

Offer help if you can – Some of us are able to get out and about again but others may be feeling anxious about going outside, which could leave them feeling lonely and isolated. Some people need support with simple tasks, like shopping or collecting medicines. Others might want help to get online to order something to make their life easier. Make sure you follow all COVID-19 guidelines when offering help.

Share information – Not everyone is online and not everyone follows the Council’s updates. We’re working with partners to get important messages to them in other ways but please help us by sharing our updates about the changing COVID-19 situation with people you know who may not have seen them. WhatsApp groups, emails, re-sharing on social media or telling a neighbour who isn’t online are all great ways to help get information to everyone in our community. For the latest COVID-19 updates, visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/coronavirus

Be mindful of your actions - Please be considerate and ensure your actions do not disturb your neighbours. The volume of music, the times that you are doing any DIY and spending time in the

Life Saving Defibrillators Installed In Beeston. A new community defibrillator has been installed at Lowes Estate, Beeston thanks to the hard work and persistence of local people to secure the life-saving equipment, working with the Community Heartbeat Trust Charity. The money for the equipment and its maintenance was secured via the County Council’s Discretionary Fund and applied for by local Councillor, Steve Carr. The new equipment is in one of only two locations in the Borough currently without easy access to a defibrillator and will provide 24-hour access to the vital lifesaving equipment to residents of the Lowes Estate and parts of Bramcote. Upon receiving a call the ambulance service will direct the caller to the machine and will issue the access code. Local Councillor, Barbara Carr said: “Too many people die each year from heart attacks. Access to this vital piece of equipment could be the difference between someone living and someone sadly passing away. I hope that local residents feel reassured knowing they have access to a defibrillator in this area now.” Sudden Cardiac Arrest happens around 100,000 times a year in the UK making it one of the UK’s largest killers. Statistics suggest that the CPR alone saves just 5% of people who suffer from a sudden cardiac arrest. However, CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) increases the chances of survival to 50%. The defibrillator delivers an electric shock to the heart in an attempt to re-stabilise the rhythm following a cardiac arrest. In the event of an emergency, the person who called 999 for an ambulance would be given the code to the cabinet and have immediate access to the device. Photo: Steve Carr and Barbara Carr.

Hay Bales Left to Benefit Nature. In Nottinghamshire, Broxtowe Borough Council is managing a large proportion of the grassland at Colliers Wood and Brinsley Headstocks Local Nature Reserves as hay meadow, to benefit wildlife and increase biodiversity. In spring and summer, the meadows are left to grow, with grass tracks maintained to make space for residents and visitors to enjoy the wildlife. The Council have adopted a very different tactic at the end of the season when cutting the hay, to further help nature. In autumn, the hay is cut and collected into bales, which are left on site in selected locations to compost naturally. As the hay decomposes, it creates a small amount of heat. Reptiles are able to take advantage of this warmth when choosing a site for egg laying, providing an additional habitat for wildlife. Throughout the late autumn and early winter, the local Friends groups are introducing seed of once-common native wild flowers into the meadows, further enhancing biodiversity. Hay Cut at BrinsleyHay Cut at Brinsley Chris Riley, Conservation and Green Spaces Development Manager at Broxtowe Borough Council says: “An ongoing record of the species found at these sites is being made and, as time passes, there should be an increase in the variety and number of wild plants and animals, helping protect Southern Marsh the meadows for future generations. Already wild orchids have Orchid at Colliers. been recorded at both sites and butterfly numbers have increased which is great to see but we hope these species will be joined by others and this becomes an enriching place not just for people, but for wildlife too. Numerous studies have found access to nature to be very beneficial. Hay Cut at Brinsley. Traditional hay meadows are extremely biodiverse, containing dozens of plant species in a square metre which provide food plants and nectar for a wide range of insects and invertebrates. These in turn provide pollinating opportunities to both wild plants and agricultural crops and a food resource for birds and other animals further up the food chain.Southern Marsh Orchid at Colliers Without a regular annual cut and removal of the hay, these meadows can soon become rank grassland, losing species diversity as they become colonised by coarse grasses, docks, thistles and scrub. A careful balance of mowing and leaving bales will mean the meadows will be managed well and become a place with more opportunities for nature to flourish. Photos: Broxtowe Borough Council

Just a little over 35 years ago, I stepped into my local branch of Boots the Chemist in Kirkby-In -Ashfield, for my first ever job interview with a wonderful Branch Manager. A lot has happened since that successful day. My hard work paid off in that little store, in return I received a “Golden Award” reference and my entry pass into Boots head office in Beeston. It seemed my path was already paved out in the way of Community and Customer service. As the years passed, I worked my way through the ranks of Boots, mixing it up with some voluntary work for the local charity Hope Nottingham and their foodbank, and with the Arches at The Trent Vineyard Church. In 2017, I launched my community based “home help” business after becoming aware that there was little in the way of the practical support in the home for the over 65’s and vulnerable adults in the NG9 and NG8. Now we have grown through recommendation, we have new name, a clear ethos, and values along with a dedicated team of Customer Support Assistants. Our Ethos: To enable and support people to live independently in their own homes within our local community. At Caring Hands we understand that finding the right care and support for yourself or for a family member is hugely important. Equally, we believe that everyone should be in control of their own support when they most need it. Taking the time to get to know our clients is paramount, and we are proud to able to offer a truly “person centred” approach to support. To arrange a consultation at home please call Kerry Seaton on

Toton and Chetwynd Masterplan Initial Consultation. Ambitious plans to create jobs, housing and transport links, connecting old and new communities on the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire over the next 20 years, are being unveiled. Residents in and around Toton, Chilwell, Stapleford, Sandiacre and Long Eaton, as well as the surrounding areas are being asked for their views on plans for the area. The consultation will run from Monday 12th October until Sunday 22nd November.Leaflets will be sent to over 80,000 residents over the next few weeks asking for their views. People can view the plans and leave their views in a ‘virtual’ display room which go into detail about the different aspects of the plans https://virtualengage.arup.com/totonmasterplan/ The scheduled closure of the historic Chetwynd Barracks in 2024 and the start of works at Toton East Midlands Hub has prompted planners to seek additional views ahead of a formal public consultation next year. The initial plans include the development of cycle pathways, green spaces, new schools, healthcare facilities and modern communities which offer affordable and carbon neutral homes.

62

Councillor Kay Cutts, Chair of the Toton Delivery Board and HS2 Executive Board, said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity to create a bright future for decades to come. The region has really come together behind these bold and ambitious proposals for Toton and Chetwynd. “A proposed new green village will create local jobs, new carbon neutral, affordable homes, and new community facilities including a new school. There will also be green spaces and more roads, paths and cycleways, including more traffic-free links to places for the family to enjoy such as the Attenborough Nature Reserve, Erewash Canal and the River Erewash. The Toton interchange is a catalyst for our wider infrastructure plans to make it much easier for people in all of our communities to move around and this matters to our towns and villages as much as our cities. These plans have the needs of the local community at heart of them. Our position as one of the best located counties in the UK means there is huge potential for job creation and skills development across our county and beyond. This is more vital than ever as we look to boost economic recovery in light of the pandemic. “We really want everyone’s views about these plans which aim to improve the way future generations work, live and spend their leisure time in this area.” Councillor Cutts added: “Proposals showcase new, clean and green models of development, with living, working and learning all overlapping. This will allow us to realise our ambitions to deliver a pioneering net zero carbon development.”

The proposals for Toton and Chetwynd also form part of an ambitious longterm vision for the future of the regional economy which is being developed under the banner of the proposed East Midlands Development Corporation. The vision will see coordinated development around Toton and Chetwynd, Ratcliffeon-Soar Power Station and East Midlands Airport, with the aim of creating 84,000 jobs and adding £4.8bn to the value of the regional economy. Speaking about the Toton and Chetwynd proposals, Councillor Milan Radulovic, Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “The pandemic has made us all look at how resilient and connected the East Midlands is to the rest of the UK. We have a lot to offer this country and we think it’s about time our transport links and connections were evolved into something ready for the future." "The jobs, the business opportunities and the economic boost this new link will offer, is an exciting prospect and something to look forward to in 2021 and beyond. Whether you are a business owner, resident or frequent visitor, we want to hear what you think about our Masterplan, so please take part in this virtual consultation and share your views. This is not just about those areas directly affected by developments. Job creation and connectivity will have positive affects across the whole of Broxtowe stretching from Toton up to Kimberley and Eastwood, across Long Eaton, Sandiacre and beyond.”

Councillor Tim Hallam said: “The Masterplan to support the development of the Toton hub has initial benefits but also some very long-term value for our region too.Job opportunities aren’t limited to the construction phase, this new transport link opens up the East Midlands, so that businesses can extend and flourish. The Masterplan supports HS2 but keeps the needs of Broxtowe very much at the centre of what we want to do. We are putting forward plans which take what is good about now and make it great for future generations, but, we want to know what you think too, so, if you live or work in Broxtowe, please share your feedback before the deadline.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions in place responses will be collected by an innovative ‘virtual exhibition’. This will allow people to view plans online as well as submit their views. In normal circumstances public meetings would be held, but under current restrictions this is not possible or sensible. However, the virtual exhibition will be available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week so people can drop in, view proposals and submit their comments. For those who cannot access the virtual portal, paper copies of the proposals and feedback form are also available on request by calling Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 7777, and asking to speak to the Duty Planner .

(08:30 to 12:30, Mon - Fri).

“Nothing I could say or do would ever replicate what she’s done for me, ever” Derbyshire teenager thanks ‘fantastic’ bereavement counsellor for help to live with death of brother 16-year-old Harvey, from Derbyshire, has thanked his bereavement counsellor forhelping him live with the sudden death of his older brother. Harvey took part in this year’s Countryfile Ramble for BBC Children in Need, joiningTV host Matt Baker on a six-mile challenge around the Peak District. The expedition, aired in a special Countryfile feature on Sunday 1st November, including canoeing, two challenging rock climbs and two miles of orienteering, ending at the village of Gradbach. Harvey took part in the Ramble in memory of his older brother Ed, who died when Harvey was just ten years old. In June 2015, on Father’s Day, 17-year-old Ed was killed in a house fire that had been started deliberately by people Ed didn’t evenknow.Harvey explained that he felt robbed of his childhood when he heard of his brother’s death:“I can remember the day like it was yesterday. I was in the playroom and out came these words, your older brother’s been killed, been murdered. I can remember feeling a hot, burning pain within me.“I’ve not had a childhood since then. I have had a life, but I’ve not had a childhood. That was taken away from me.”

64

Following Ed’s death, Harvey became angry and isolated, getting into scrapes at school and started to have panic attacks.Harvey and his family found the support they needed through local charity, TreetopsHospice Care. Treetops, based in Risley, provides counselling and emotional support to children, young people, adults and families.

Harvey has just finished five years of bereavement counselling with Treetops counsellor, Jules Kirk. “I had no real coping strategy. There was nothing for me to get out of that, until I found Treetops. If it wasn’t for Jules, I wouldn’t be able to talk about this, I’d be extremely different. It’s hard to think where I’d be without her. Nothing I could say or do would ever be able to replicate what she’s done for me, ever. She’s just fantastic. The hardest thing about counselling for me was that it gets worse before it gets better. You don’t go and have one session and feel better. Counselling is about getting to a point where you can deal with it yourself and with your own tools, with your family around you. And I’m at that point now. Treetops is a very special place. They’re amazing. What they have done for our family is just unbelievable

Jules, who is also the Therapeutic Services Manager and Head of Children’s Services at Treetops, was with his family to greet Harvey at the end of his Countryfile Ramble. She explained how ‘incredibly proud’ she is: “Harvey is an amazing young man. It was an honour to be alongside him in his grief journey and to see how far he has come. I know how much completing this challenge meant to him, and what a wonderful way to end our work together. I am so proud of the work we do here at Treetops. It is a privilege to be there for the many clients we support during their darkest times.”Harvey’s mum, Amanda, added: “As a family we’re so grateful for all the support Treetops has provided us and Harvey. We’re thrilled Harvey joined Matt on this Ramble, and we are all so proud of him and what he has achieved.”Treetops currently receives a grant of £30,000 from BBC Children in Need over three years to provide counselling sessions for children and young people who have lost someone close to them. During the pandemic, the charity received an

additional grant of £4,500 to provide care packages for bereaved children and young people.Last year, Treetops Hospice Care provided over 1,100 bereavement sessions for children and families, over 3,000 adult bereavement counselling sessions, and over 600 support sessions for people dealing with a life-limiting condition. Counselling is available to all users of Treetops Hospice Care services and people registered with a GP practice in Derby city or Southern Derbyshire. Treetops is doing all it can to continue to support those in most need. The hospice welcomes donations to their Treetops COVID-19 Appeal to ensure the future of the hospice and its services.
