Welcome to our gardening feature! Hello Gardeners... Welcome to your June’s gardening’ I can't believe it’s June already and summer is here!. We are halfway through the year and let's hope we are in for some summer weather too!. Last month I thought we saw April's weather with all those shower's making it ideal growing weather I could see things growing by the day! June really is a wonderful time in the garden as flowers are starting to appear in abundance and in the vegetable garden some things are starting to be harvested such as early new potatoes! again, this year I been growing early potatoes in tubs, two different varieties Maris Bard and Rocket and I'm looking to harvest them around the end of the month. We also get the longest day this month we must make the most of the extra light and warmth so enjoy and Happy Gardening Everybody! Here are some jobs to get on with in your garden! • • • • • • •

• • •

12

There is still time to plant runner beans - sow them directly in the ground now Although fruit trees will naturally shed some fruit (called the 'June drop'), aim to thin out congested branches further for bigger and better fruits In the greenhouse, open vents and doors on warm days and dampen down on hot days to increase humidity If the weather turns very dry, set your mower blades higher to reduce stress on your lawn. Plant out annual summer bedding plants now the risk of frost has passed Turn the compost in your bins every month to keep it well aerated, give it a little water if dry Prune flowering shrubs such as Deutzia, Kolkwitzia, Weigela and Philadelphus after they have finished flowering Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well-watered whilst they establish a strong root system Continue to earth up potatoes as they grow. If you're growing potatoes in tubs just add more compost to half way up the plant stem Clip the new growth of evergreen hedges such as Privet, Box and Yew to keep

them in shape

June, Month Of The Rose Gardening and health have forever been connected but last year we experienced this bond in ways we could have never imagined. In March 2020, our lives entered strange new times, we became heavily reliant on two things we had come to take for granted in our busy everyday lives - our National Health Service and our outdoor spaces. It seemed fitting that this year we celebrate both our NHS and the outdoor havens that we have relied so much on, that a rose has been released for 2021 called ‘Nye Bevan’ Named after the founder of the NHS. During World War Two, Aneurin Bevan was one of the leaders of the left in the House of Commons, after the landslide Labour victory in the 1945 general election, Bevan was appointed minister of health, responsible for establishing the National Health Service. David Austin Roses are introducing this uplifting variety, whose light and airy blooms radiate hope and positivity.

Nye Bevan

Another new release you want to look out for this year from the renowned Harkness Roses Breeding programme is this fabulous Hybrid-Tea rose named after the late Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised almost £40m for the NHS, before he sadly passed away, aged 100, Sir Tom understandably captured the nations heart, and this rose is deservedly named in his honour. A variety producing masses of perfectly formed, gorgeously scented, double flowered red roses from May to October each year, perfect for planting in pots, as well as beds and borders it is totally winter hardy and will grow 3ft high for every rose sold, £2.50 is donated to The Captain Tom Foundation. Talking of roses…. It’s going back a few years now whilst having a weekend away in the lovely North of Wales, (and yes, we did visit Bodnant garden!) stumbled across a little coastal village with no more than half a dozen shops, there was a second hand shop and outside had boxes of books, CDs etc and as you do, you have a

a flick through the books and would you believe it there was a book all about Harry Wheatcroft and his roses. Obviously well known around these parts, Harry Wheatcroft was born in Sneinton, Nottingham in the late 1890s and during his life made his name at his nursery in Edwalton. It was a very interesting read with links to more local rose growers in the area . Harry Wheatcroft Rose - Bring the colour and character of the famously eccentric Rose grower Harry Wheatcroft to your garden with this superb Rose of the same name. RECYCLE RECYCLE RECYCLE What to do with PAINT Spring and summer means more DIY jobs around the house. But do you know what to do with your leftover paint? How to dispose of unwanted paint If you can't use it all up or find a good home for your paint you will need to harden it before disposal. **Councils are unable to accept liquid paint, as liquid wastes are banned from landfill sites. You can buy a paint hardener, or add sawdust, sand or soil to the tin and leave the lid off until the paint becomes solid and dry. Please then pierce the dried paint before taking it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre to make sure it's fully hardened.Currently, plastic paint cans are not widely accepted - check your local council website for more information. **Information for Community Groups wanting left over paints Some waste Recycling centres from time to time accept left over paint to distribute to Community Groups etc, however due to Covid, collection of left over paints from designated waste centres are currently not available. (you can still enquire to when the scheme may be operating again). Solvent based paint, paint thinner and white spirit should be disposed of as hazardous waste. What to do with FACEMASKS If a face covering is not washable, is worn out or disposable, put it in yourusual ‘black bag’ residual waste bin. We must not put used face coverings of any kind or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, into the recycling bin. Nor must we drop them as litter – it’s a criminal offence. What to do with AEROSOLS Ensure aerosols are completely empty before recycling. Do not pierce, crush or flatten aerosol cans. Detach any loose or easily removable parts, such as the lid, and dispose of them with the rest of your recycling. Did you know? If everyone in UK recycled one empty can of air freshener, enough energy could be saved to run a TV in 273,000 homes for a year!

22

Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

Recycle cooking oil at recycling centres Don't pour cooking oil down the sink, take it to your local recycling centre. Cooking oil from households (not commercial) can be recycled at each of Nottinghamshire's 12 Recycling Centres. It is collected and turned into green electricity, all of which helps to reduce the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels. Just one litre of used cooking oil can create enough ‘green’ energy to make 240 cups of tea. What's more, one full recycling centre tank provides enough energy to power a home for an entire year!

Tetrapacs will now be accepted at your local recycling centre, (on a 6 month trial from March 2021) , please don’t place them in your kerbside or recycle bins. Icecream tubs made from plastic or waxed card are to be placed in your general waste bins, not the recycle bins. Some district centres now provide recycling banks for these. Plastic plant pots - please try and reuse them or give them to other gardeners, don’t throw away. Some garden centres offer a plant pot recycling service. Some centres provide recycle banks for these. You can now buy biodegradable pots. Unwanted coat hangers. Please donate the good ones to your local charity shop. Aternatively you can take the metal ones to a local recycle centre, under scrap metal, and the plastic ones they will take also take. You can place them in your ordinary waste. If hiring a van to transport your household waste items you must arrange temporary access. Some commercial house clearance vans with advertising on, will not be allowed to dispose of items (as it will be seen as trade waste).

Broxtowe Borough Council achieves White Ribbon accreditation. Broxtowe Borough Council has taken a stand to end all male violence against women by becoming White Ribbon Accredited. White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people, especially men and boys, to individually and collectively take action and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence. To wear a white ribbon is to promise to never to commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women. Commitments made by Broxtowe Borough Council in tackling domestic abuse have included recruiting a new staff member to lead on the coordination of its domestic abuse services and their White Ribbon action plan includes the establishment of a multi-agency steering group to lead the initiative, the appointment of a number White Ribbon ambassadors amongst staff, improving staff training and policies and procedures and looking at opportunities to work with different community groups and initiatives to raise awareness and increase engagement. Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK said, “Our call to end violence by raising awareness, educating and campaigning to bring about change is greatly strengthened by working together with our White Ribbon accredited organisations. Our partners are able to engage with many thousands of people to change the cultures that lead to violence against women and girls. We are delighted to welcome Broxtowe Borough Council as one of our White Ribbon Accredited organisations. Together we can prevent violence happening in the first place.” Councillor Teresa Cullen, Chair of the Housing Committee said; “As a Council we are proud to show our commitment to White Ribbon and we will be working together to prevent domestic abuse and raise awareness of this important issue in our society. Statistics have shown that the COVID-19 lockdown has increased instances of domestic abuse in our communities, and it is important that the Council and its staff commit to doing what we can to assist in tackling this issue and enable everyone to live in safety and free from violence and abuse.” Housing Options and Homelessness If you feel you are at risk of harm there are alternatives you could explore such as the Sanctuary Scheme, which can carry out safety works in your home such as changing locks, fireproof letterboxes and panic rooms. Call Broxtowe Council’s Housing Options Team on 0115 917 7777 for further information. If however, you think you need leave your home, try to arrange temporary housing from the council before you leave. Not everyone leaving home due to violence is entitled to emergency accommodation. If you are a woman leaving domestic abuse, try to find a place in a women’s refuge. WAIS can help you with this. Take some essentials with you such as a change of clothes, toiletries and any medication you need to take regularly. Try to bring important items such as your passport, bank and credit cards and mobile phone.

Do not make a decision to give up your home permanently until you have spoken to an adviser and considered all your options. You can apply to our Housing Options Team as a homeless person if you cannot stay in your home. The council has to give you advice about finding somewhere to live. Some people are entitled to emergency accommodation. If the council has a duty to find you somewhere to live, you will be asked to provide details of your situation. You may be asked for supporting evidence, which could include details and dates of incidents. You can take a friend or an adviser with you for support. Nottinghamshire charity, Broxtowe Women’s Project (BWP), is inviting you to celebrate their 20th birthday with them at a Garden Afternoon Tea party to be held on National Cream Tea day in Beeston later this June. There will be tea and delicious scones with clotted cream and jam, and an atmosphere of celebration, at the Garden Afternoon Tea at Beeston Methodist Church on Friday 25 June, as BWP celebrates with the community they’ve worked with, and supported, over the last 20 years. Colette Byrne, BWP’s Chief Executive said “Our 20th birthday has given us an opportunity to reflect on the many women and families that have been supported by our specialist Domestic Abuse services over the last two decades. In 1991 our vision was to provide a local, specialist support service that addressed the needs of women, and empowered them towards independent lives, free from abuse. We continue to support women, children, and young people every day so that they can overcome the impact of abuse and thrive. This summer, following current Government guidance, we’re celebrating our achievements with a fantastic vintage themed Garden Afternoon Tea. The event will also raise funds that will enable us to continue our incredible work, as our services are sadly in great demand. We would love for you to join us.” To reserve your space, or table at £10 per person plus booking fee, please visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/bwp call 01773 718555, or email: enquiries@broxtowewp.org BWP’s opening hours are 9am-5pm Monday-Friday and we are closed on Bank Holidays. World Exclusive T. rex Exhibition To Open in Nottingham. The first real Tyrannosaurus rex to be exhibited in England for over a century will arrive in Nottingham this summer. The skeleton of Titus, discovered in the Montana Badlands in 2018, will be revealed for the first time at the Wollaton Hall Natural History Museum, the focus of a new exhibition set to explore his life and environment. Opening on Sunday 4th July 2021 and running until August 2022, the exhibition, Titus: T. rex is King, has been specially designed around the T. rex, himself, with digital and interactive virtual media displays that will immerse visitors in his extraordinary journey from discovery in the Montana Badlands in the USA, through the experience of excavation, curation, examination, rebuild and final reveal. The exhibition, taking over some 4,000 square feet, explores the legend of the T. rex and is also set to dispel some myths about this immense iconic dinosaur – that lived over 66 million years ago. Arts Council England provided the initial funding of £250,000 to secure the exhibition for Nottingham and the UK, allowing Wollaton Hall Natural History Museum in Nottingham to assemble a unique, expert team of palaeontologists, conservationists, and digital display specialists to tell the story of Titus, and his world.

40

Dr David Hone, the Senior Lecturer in Zoology at Queen Mary, University of London in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, internationally renowned palaeontologist and part of the exhibition development team tasked with bringing Titus to life, said: “Visitors will be able to explore the world of Titus and take a closer look at his particular features – his crushing bite, incredible eyesight and keen sense of smell, air-filled bones, weight, size and speed. And then look more closely at his make-up of muscle and tissue, with 3D scans of his bones to examine and handle – and try to decide if in fact he was covered in scales or feathers or both.” Rachael Evans, Museums Development Manager at Nottingham City Museums explains: “Coming face to face with an actual T. rex is an experience very few in the world can claim. Even in skeleton form, Titus’ power and presence is unmistakable we have had to dedicate the largest room at Wollaton Hall just to him alone. “Titus T. rex is King will take you on a truly unique journey discovering all there is to know about this dinosaur – the largest predator in its ecosystem. The sheer size and scale of the skeleton takes your breath away. It is a truly an amazing discovery and an absolute must-see.” Nigel Hawkins, Director of Culture & Libraries at Nottingham City Council, said: “We could not be more thrilled that Titus will be making his world exclusive debut at Wollaton Hall, particularly as he will be the only real T. rex to be seen in most of Europe. Plans for the exhibition look spectacular – and it’s a wonderful opportunity for visitors to explore the city and wider region.”

Kinga Kapias, Marketing and Communications Manager at Visit Nottinghamshire, said: “We are thrilled that this extraordinary exhibition will soon be stomping in to Wollaton Hall,

which already has a fantastic legacy for dinosaur-themed experiences following

the roaring success of Dinosaurs of China and Jurassic Kingdom at Wollaton Hall in recent years. “As the only T-Rex on display in the UK, for most people this will be the one chance they get in their lifetimes to come face to face with this massive, majestic creature which walked the earth millions of years ago. The exhibition is filled with interactive and immersive elements to create an unique and unforgettable day out for adults and children alike, of course with COVID-safety measures in place. We know this will be hugely popular with tourists visiting the region during its 14-month residence here and we are optimistic that it will play a key role in the recovery of our local visitor economy. Wollaton Hall has an international reputation for attracting rare and previously unseen dinosaur exhibits

to the UK. In 2017, it staged the hugely successful Dinosaurs of China exhibition with a selection of fossils and skeletons from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing and the Long Hao Institute of Geology and Paleontology Inner Mongolia, that had never been seen outside of Asia before. Tickets for TITUS T. REX IS KING are on sale now, set at £12.00 for an adult, £8.00 for a child (under 16 years), students and concessions, £32.00 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children under 16 years) and under 3s and carers have no entry fees to pay. Booking fees & car parking charges apply. With covid safety measures in place, booking in advance is essential. There will also be a range of special merchandise developed to accompany the exhibition including a limited-edition book, cataloguing in even greater detail, the story of Titus. Care and Support at Home – Choosing a Care Provider (1) Care at home can provide the help and support necessary for people to remain independent and stay in their own home for as long as possible. Although care at home has traditionally been delivered by Local Authorities or companies appointed by Local authorities, there is now a much wider choice of providers for both private and social care funding. If you qualify for social care funding (see my previous articles on care needs and funding) there is a duty for councils to produce a care and support plan and offer a Personal Budget. A Personal Budget is an agreed amount of money which is allocated to you by your local council (and other funding sources) following and assessment of your care and support needs. The funding which has been agreed as your Personal Budget can be received as Direct Payments. In this case, the local authority pays all or part of your entire personal budget into a designated bank account. You then utilise this funding to pay the provider you chose. Regardless of funding the approach to evaluating and choosing a provider can be daunting. In many instances there is the added pressure of having to decide quickly to accommodate a need brought about by illness or sudden deterioration in someone’s condition. The guidelines below will help you ask the right questions and evaluate any prospective provider(s) to ensure that your decision is made based on sound analysis. The better companies will freely provide this information but be prepared to ask. You should ask whether the company is registered with the Care & Quality Commission (CQC) and request details of their latest inspection. The CQC is the body responsible for regulating care in England and carries out regular inspections to rate the services based on how well they meet minimum standards. You can also findout more about the provider (or ask somebody to do it on your behalf) via the internet at www.cqc.org.uk by entering the provider’s details or post code. It is also important to find out whether the provider recruits and employs their staff as opposed to utilising a third-party agency that supplies staff. Ask about the type of training they provide before carers are allowed to visit clients. As a minimum it should include First aid, Moving & Handling, Infection Control, Safeguarding,Health & Safety and Food Hygiene. In addition, you should confirm that a Criminal Records Check is carried out before staff are employed and find out how many references (if any) they request from previous employers. An understanding of how they assign CAREGivers to specific clients is vitally important. Once you agree the number and length of visits find out how many carers they will use and how they decide on the relevantCAREGiver(s).

Message from Stapleford Community Group Broxtowe Borough Council Installs the 45th New Mayor Councillor Richard MacRae, an independent Councillor from Stapleford North, grew up in Stapleford and is incredibly passionate about supporting the local area. In 2015, Richard was elected to the Broxtowe Borough Council and he also sits on Stapleford Town Council. He served as Deputy Mayor of Broxtowe and Stapleford Town Mayor during 2020/21 Civic Year. Richard is a very active member of the local community and will supporting Broxtowe Youth Homelessness during his year in office. Richard takes over from past Mayor (2020/21), Councillor Janet Patrick, following her successful year in office, where she rose to the challenge of adapting to the role amidst the pandemic, undertaking 291 engagements. Janet has raised over £2,450 for Citizen Advice Broxtowe and also helped raise a further £30,000 as part of two Community Appeals during her year in office. Councillor David Grindell, a Liberal Democrat Councillor for Stapleford South East, will assist Richard as the Borough’s Deputy Mayor. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the Annual Council meeting took place with reduced numbers in order to maintain adherence to government guidance. As a result of this, guests of Mayor Making and members of the public were not able to attend in person and so the event was live streamed to be watched online. A recording of the event will be available on the Council’s YouTube channel shortly. If you would like to support the Mayor’s chosen charities or invite the new Mayor to a special event, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3210, email civic@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit our Civic webpages. Colbies Garden, when the community pull together amazing things can be achieved. The family would like to say a massive thank you to Richard MacRae and Stapleford Community Group. Stapleford Combined Services Club and Councillor David Grindell, who supplied all the materials for doing this garden. Steve and Colin from The Helpful Bureau. They helped clear the garden. Scott Copson and Neesons Construction for doing all the prep work, and turning up when he said he would. KRM Buildings Supplies Ltd for supplying the AstroTurf. Without these people Colbie and Liam would never have had a garden to play in. As most of you know Colbie had a brain tumor, then a stroke at the age of two. My daughter could not take them into the garden as it was like a jungle. We would just like to say a massive thank you to all of you. - Donna MacRae - Stapleford Community Group -
