Why do we wear the red poppy?
The poppy became a symbol of Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future in the aftermath of the First World War. Since 1921 the Royal British Legion collectors have been at the heart of the Poppy Appeal. And this year they will be back in local communitites across the UK to collect donations that help RBL continue it's vital work. The poppy is red because that’s the natural colour of the poppy flower.
During the First World War previously beautiful countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud where little or nothing could grow.
But out of this devastation the delicate but resilient bright red Flanders poppies grew and flourished in their thousands. The red poppy directly supports the Armed Forces community The red poppy is worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces com munities across the UK, Allied Forces and the Commonwealth.
Only donations from the sale of Royal British Legion red poppies go directly towards helping the Armed Forces community.
Like the natural flower, the original version of the poppy did not feature a leaf. A leaf was first introduced in the 1960s and they slowly became an optional extra.
By 1984 demand for them had grown to 12 million a year, and in 1995 poppies with leaves included were made available for the first time.

By Dr. S A Janjua BSc(Hons) MCOptom DOptom Prof Cert Glau Prof Cert LV Prof Cert Med Ret DipSV Director & Doctor of OptometryBrand new, state-of-the-art equipment at John Flynn Opticians in Beeston is now facilitating the very best diagnostic capabilities to ensure the best eyecare in the country. Optometrist Dr. Janjua’s new equipment provides hospital-standard insight into your health and is one of just a handful of such machines anywhere in the UK...
Foresight. Hindsight. Insight. It’s quite clear how much importance we place on sight. We’ve all come to recognise that a first-class optometrist will not only make your vision sharper, as a result of the prescription they determine you need, but will also help to assess your overall health, using your eyes to as an indicator of your general health. As eye-care technology has finessed, some optometrists have invested in decent technology, but some diagnostic equipment remains the preserve of dedicated eye-care departments in specialist hospitals such as Moorfields, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and Nottingham’s Queens Medical Centre. Those specialist facilities and teaching hospitals have previously been able to boast the best diagnostic technology, which High Street opticians could only look upon with envy... that is, until now. Beeston’s John Flynn Opticians, established in 1938, recently took delivery of its new Heidelberg Spectralis machine which is –without exaggeration – the best OCT scanner available for any eye-care practitioners and one which most dedicated hospital eyecare departments would covet. It’s one of just a handful of machines here in the UK and as Dr. Janjua says, it’s the gold standard for dedicated eye hospitals, let alone a High Street optician, providing him with unprecedented accuracy and clarity when making a diagnosis.
An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) machine is used to take a 3D scan of the eye to allow a specialist to assess the health of the optic nerve, macular and to detect and monitor the progression of conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma. John Flynn Opticians’ new machine, though, builds on this technology to create 4D imagery accurate to just a single micron – one hundredth of the width of a human hair.
The system also uses artificial intelligence to track the exact position of successive scans, overlaying them precisely to check changes over successive months or years. Fast, contact-free and painless, the system can also send images to hospital departments for other clinicians to review in the event of a referral.
“We can use the technology to examine tiny details that help us to detect eye disease at the earliest stages, reducing the risk of sight loss and improving our patients’ lives,” says Dr Janjua.
Naturally technology is nothing without expertise, and so Dr. Janjua is committed to interpreting the results of a scan and explaining findings in an accessible way. With the highest quality diagnostic information comes the most accurate prescription, and alongside the very best ophthalmic lenses from across the industry – Zeiss, Nikon and Hoya –the practice’s state-of-the-art equipment is crucial, but only when used alongside the very best diagnostic skill and the provision of quality ophthalmic lenses and luxury frames.
The result is great service, clear vision and true peace of mind; a holistic service that’s clearly better at providing quality eyecare.
John Flynn Opticians provides eye examinations, prescription eyewear and contact lenses from its practice on Devonshire Avenue, Beeston, NG9 1BS, call 0115 925 5051 / 0115 939 2421 or see www.johnflynnopticians.co.uk.
“Just picked up my third pair of specs from Flynns. I’ve used them for years and cannot fault them, from the excellent care with my sight test to Annette and Wendy who are on hand to advise, make sure your specs fit and sit properly and just generally make you feel welcome. Nothing is too much trouble. Thank you all. Until my next visit.”
E. Taylor“I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Janjua and all his team at Flynn Opticians in Beeston. Due to wrong prescriptions in the past going to him changed my life. Not only do you get the best product on the market and expert advice, everybody is so helpful and kind. I would not go anywhere else.”
J. West“I’d heard that the glasses were great quality and the service was great at John Flynn Optician. The staff have been very helpful and gave me all the facts I needed. I love the personal touch and that you don’t have to ask for helpit’s just given. I love my new glasses - the style, the colour, the quality - everything. Dan and Annette have been brilliant from the minute I walked in the door. They are very friendly and provided perfect service in every way. I will be coming back and will share my experience with others.”

Tips for energy saving and keeping your home warm
Line your curtains with cheap fleece. Chunky window-wear, especially lined and insulated, will keep the warmth in. If you're on a budget, line curtains yourself with cheap fleece blankets (from about £2 at places such as Ikea and Asda) –but remember to check it's fire retardant. Put reflective panels behind radiators - Most heat is lost through external walls. Radiator reflector panels bounce heat back into the room rather than let it pass through external walls. The Energy Saving Trust says homes with uninsulated walls will get the most benefit.
Use the microwave instead of the oven - If you can use your microwave instead of the oven to cook certain foods, do. They use less energy than ovens because they only heat the food, not the air around it. Time for a cuppa? Stop filling the kettle up to the brim – and don’t be one of the 23 per cent that re-boils the kettle. Boiling more water than necessary each time could save you £36 year, based on calculations from the Energy Saving Trust. Changing over to LED bulbs, which are far more efficient. In fact, they generally need just 10% of the electricity compared to an older bulb. For example, a traditional 60W bulb usually produces the same amount of light as a 6W LED bulb. How much you really save depends on the number of lights you have around the home. But estimates range from £50 to £200 each year.
Ideas For Chris as Gi s
People are now collecting vinyl. In the last few years, vinyl records have made a comeback in the music industry. Though they were once replaced by digital formats, vinyl records have seen a resurgence in popularity due to the warmer sound and nostalgic feel they provide. Vinyl records are tangible – Obviously, there’s some appeal to buying something and being able to physically handle it. Buyers are more likely to regard their purchase as something of value when it’s a physical object than they are if it’s merely something that they downloaded. The artwork on many of the of the albums are a pure joy to look at, talented artists both in the past and present have been commisioned to work on numerous albums covering various themes.
Vinyl records are bigger than compact discs, which makes it easier to read song titles, lyrics, and liner notes than it is on a compact disc. Even people with relatively good eyesight have long complained that reading the small booklets enclosed with compact discs is difficult. The larger size of record albums also allows for better appreciation of cover photos and graphics, which often represent a lot of time, money and effort on the part of the artists who created them. Some of the titles that were issued in the 1990s as CD-only releases are now being issued as vinyl records for the first time ever and they’re selling well. Back in the 1970’s some albums came with posters, Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd for example, where the poster was hung in many teenagers apartments and bedrooms. There is something quite satisfying showing off your record collection to friends, family, and even grandchildren.
Jazz ,Blues,Rock, and Soul music for some of the younger generation has become a new interest, the Beatles and Elvis Presley vinyls are still being played today on the turntable. How and where do you store your record collection? Many people are moving away from storing them on shelves, - the weight being one problem, or there is just too many to store away, but the main complaint is the fact that the title on side of the record sleeve can’t be read .
The Little Cabinet Company based in Sandiacre have come up with a solution. Moving away from plastic storage boxes and cases, an eco way to store them is a rustic box made from recycled wood on attractive strong black metal hairpin legs. Being off the floor makes it easier to sit and browse through the collection with ease. These boxes can house a large number of vinyls, and are sturdy .The inside of the boxes have been made smooth so not to damage the album covers. There is also a mat placed inside at the bottom for added protection and to stop the vinyl’s slipping . These are all handmade by the The Little Cabinet Company. They are an ideal size for any rooms and come either waxed, stained or painted. If a particular colour is requested, please enquire. All are made with the logoon the front. Prices start from £75. (no VAT)
These would make a perfect gift for either Christmas, or birthday.
To purchase oneof these please contact the Grapevine Magazine : 07854990608 or email sales@beechpublications.co.uk and the order, or any enquiry will be sent to The Little Cabinet Company. Local delivery* or collection can be arranged. (*Small charge for delivery)

Police operation launched to target unruly youths blighting residents' lives in Beeston.
Police have launched an operation to target unruly young people who are blighting the lives of residents around Beeston town centre.
Residents have expressed concerns about an increase in anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in the town, including across the tram network.
In response to these reports, additional police officers will be deployed to the hotspot areas to improve the situation.
Officers will take action against any young person who breaks the law, but they will also be able to use dispersal orders to prevent them returning to the area.
Neighbourhood Inspector Mike Ebbins, who covers the Beeston area, said the operation has been launched to ensure residents feel safe and that their concerns are being addressed.
He said: “ e area has repeatedly been a ected by a small number of groups causing disruption to our residents, businesses, and visitors.Appeals have been made for parents to challenge and educate their children over their actions, but the problem still exists. “I don’t want residents to think we have ignored this problem. We haven’t. We have tried to engage with the young people and work at nding solutions to the problem.
“But enough is enough. ere will be a no-nonsense approach and we now have a plan in place to put o cers in these locations for an extended period of time. Incidents have included the criminal damage of vehicles, abusive and threatening behaviour in the town centre and intimidating people on the tram network. Areas covered by the police team will be Beeston town centre and the areas around Dovecote Lane and Chilwell Road. e operation will run from October 31 through December.
He added: “Operation Potassium will allow my team to focus on this issue. O cers will target groups causing problems and look for opportunities to take action.
“Dispersal powers will also be in place to move on unwanted groups, and we will work with the council to o er alternative provision for young people. Residents have called for a visible deterrent in Beeston and Operation Potassium will provide this presence and will mean they can be reassured that we are taking their concerns seriously. Beeston is a great place to live, work and visit and we won’t have it spoilt by a small minority.”
Cllr Milan Radulovic, Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said:
“We have positively and creatively engaged with these young people in Beeston and where that has failed, they need to understand that with freedom comes responsibility. Residents have been asking for this. ey feel intimidated and have real concerns.“If these young people continue to act in a way that threatens and intimidates people, we will not fail in our endeavours to make sure they comply with the law.”
Julian Smedley, NET Operations Manager, added: “We are pleased to support this latest initiative, as NET shares Nottinghamshire Police’s commitment to tackle anti-social across the communities we serve.“ is type of activity will not be tolerated on the tram network and, as well as taking part in joint patrols with the police we regularly share CCTV footage with them to identify groups and individuals responsible.”
Have Your Say On Broxtowe’s Budget
Residents in Broxtowe are being asked for their views on the Council’s budget and services it provides.
As part of its annual budget consultation, Broxtowe Borough Council is asking residents to complete the survey atWe want your help to shape our budget www. broxtowe.gov.uk/budgetconsultation to share their views on services like waste and recycling, parks and leisure facilities and how they think the Council should use its budget to maintain these services.
Portfolio Holder for Resources and Personnel Policy, Councillor Greg Marshall said: “It’s that time of year again where we ask our residents to help us make important decisions about our spending and services. In the current climate, where we are facing the worst cost of living crisis in generations, it’s more important than ever that we make every penny count. We have to set a budget that balances the needs of the community with the money we have available to spend through income and grants and the views of our local people on what is important to them is an integral part of our decision making.”
The survey is open until 30th November 2022 and respondents can enter a prize draw to win one of 6 - £50 Love2Shop vouchers. Respondents must have a Broxtowe address to qualify for the draw.Anyone who is unable to complete the form online can send their comments to Finance Services, Broxtowe Borough Council, Foster Avenue, Beeston, NG9 1AB. Houghton Weavers
The Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk for 47 years with their unique blend of popular folk music, humour and audience participation and they announce their annual forthcoming Autumn / Winter 2022 UK Tour. The North West’s leading comedy / folk group will visit towns and cities such as Colwyn Bay, Morecambe, Darwen, Warrington, Preston, Bolton, Middleton, Lytham St Anne’s, Blackpool, Buxton and Ulverston.
To coincide with their UK Tour, they release their brand-new single, ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ on Friday 7th October, taken from their forthcoming album ‘New World in the Morning’ which was due out on Friday 14th October.
“To us, this traditional Scottish Folk Song depicts the love that Queen Elizabeth II had for the beautiful Scottish Highlands. It could almost be a signature to her love and time spent north of the border. It’s such a poignant and beautiful traditional song and it seems a perfect track as our tribute to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Having been working on the album for almost 2 years, through Covid and into the summer of 2022, It’s a mixture of self-penned and traditional songs as well as some very well-known folk covers. We have used various session musicians including Ken Nichol of Steeleye Span and the wonderful country folk guitarist Pete Frampton. e album has that Weavers comedy element but is brought back down to earth with some beautifully poignant trad folk songs. We are dedicating this album to our late Tony Berry who sadly passed away in 2019.” The Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk up and down the country and promise a fun-packed, sing-along family show with great music and funny stories galore! There will be plenty of laughter and the old familiar songs like the Blackpool Belle, Matchstalk Men and Wild Rover mixed together with some new songs, and festive perennial favourites on the Christmas Tour like Let It Snow, Bless Your Whiskers and White Christmas.
Learning their craft in the folk clubs of their native North West, the group have never wavered from their original motto of “Keep Folk Smiling”. Steve Millington, David Littler and Jim Berry entertain their audiences in a show of charming fun, humorous jokes, and anecdotes, together with plenty of music, varying from raucous traditional and popular Folk Songs to sing-along favourites, with beautiful ballads and original pieces included throughout. Announcing White Ribbon Day, 25th November 2022,
White Ribbon Day , 25 November, falls on the same week as the start of the FIFA men’s World Cup. There has never a better time for us to focus on the good that can come from unifying and supporting one common cause. All men can join the team to end violence against women and girls - that's #TheGoal #TheGoal brings men and boys together to think about how they can make a positive difference to achieve equality and safety for women and girls. #TheGoal unites people to start playing as a team to end violence against women and girls.
Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK shared,
“This year we are addressing how informal rules about ‘how to be a man’ and ‘how to be a woman’ can restrict the way men, women, girls, and boys are expected to live. These behaviours can be harmful and create environments that normalise violence against women and girls.
#TheGoal highlights eleven traits that men and boys can nurture, each representing a player in a football team. It calls on the need to shift expectations that violent and abusive behaviour and attitudes are normal and cannot be changed. All men and boys can commit to equality and safety for women and girls to live the lives they want to lead without fear of violence.
This is always #TheGoal. Organisations and individuals across England and Wales are supporting the campaign, including football clubs at all levels, emphasising unity and desire to change harmful cultures and end violence against women.
#TheGoal calls on people to make the White Ribbon Promise, never to use, excuse or remain silent about violence against women and girls. The Promise can be made on White Ribbon UK’s website: www.whiteribbon.org.uk/whiteribbonday22

GRAPEVINE COMPETITION
WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE SLADE THURSDAY 22ND
2022 IN LEEDS - WAREHOUSE
SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 50 years. With their unique blend of perfect pop rock'n'roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits...plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world.
SLADE'S chart career has spanned 6 decades and their enduring songs “Far Far Away”, "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Coz I Luv You" are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the World’s biggest companies.
SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song "Get Down and Get With It" then, released in October of the same year "Coz I Luv You" was the bands first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe.
Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe's biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade's catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:- "Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama We'er All Crazee Now", "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Gudbye T' Jane", along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time.
At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the world’s biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down", which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. After a successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 60,000 people, consolidated the bands position and paved the way for the single "Lock Up Your Daughters", and the album "Til Deaf Do Us Part".
While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit “My Oh My” to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of "Cum On Feel The Noize", which proved so successful that they followed it up with "Mama Weer All Crazee Now". Throughout the start of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop'n'rock. The early nineties saw the bands "Radio Wall Of Sound" hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade member Dave Hill returned to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two-month tour of Australia. SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK "Merry Christmas Everybody" tour in December. They have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Spain & France. Having just returned from a festival in Gibraltar, next stop is Greenland and Faroe Islands. Now in 2022, Led by founder member Dave Hill on Lead Guitar with John Berry who joined in 2003 on Lead Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar and Violin. Alex Bines now joins on Drums, Alex has toured with Wilko Johnson, The Rubettes and is also a Drum teacher.Slade today is still one of the most exciting bands on the road, and their stage performance is a dynamic, powerful and exhilarating roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated rock'n'roll.

GRAPEVINE COMPETITION! Win 2 tickets to see GISELLE at the NOTTINGHAM Royal Concert Hall 20th February 2023 - 7.30pm
Raymond Gubbay Limited is pleased to announce that Varna International Ballet and Orchestra will visit the UK for the very first time in their 75-year history with classical performances of THE NUTCRACKER, SWAN LAKE, COPPÉLIA and GISELLE. The season will open at St David’s Hall Cardiff 17 – 31 December 2022 The company will visit Basingstoke, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Buxton, Darlington, Edinburgh, High Wycombe, Hull, Ipswich, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Northampton, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Peterborough, Reading, Southend, Wimbledon and Wolverhampton from January to March in 2023. Renowned for its award-winning soloists and magnificent corps de ballet, the company has been delighting audiences for decades at home in Bulgaria and abroad with its performances of the highest quality. Artistic Director Daniela Dimova and Music Director and Chief Conductor Peter Tuleshkov from Varna International Ballet and Orchestra said:‘We are thrilled to be bringing our highly talented company of dancers and musicians to the UK for the very rst time. We can’t wait to perform for British audiences and to bring these magical ballets to life on stage.’
Varna State Opera was founded in 1947 by the renowned Bulgarian tenor Peter Raycheff. The main credit for the development of the ballet troupe goes to Galina and Stefan Yordanov who were Artistic Directors and choreographers for over 25 years (1960-1985). They formed the image of the Varna Ballet and brought it to the international stage and founded the first and now world-famous Varna International Ballet Competition in 1964. Since 2010 Varna State Opera and Varna Drama Theatre are united in one cultural institute called Theatre and Music Production Centre Varna.
The ballets performed this season are:
Swan Lake - The greatest romantic ballet of all time is brought to life by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score. From the impressive splendour of the Palace ballroom to the moon-lit lake where swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all. From Odile, the temptress in black tulle as she seduces the Prince by spinning with captivating precision to the spellbound purity of the swan queen, Odette as she flutters with emotional intensity, the dual role of Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most unmissabletechnical challenges.
Coppélia - Every toy has a story, especially in this charming comedy of errors, a witty combination of antics and abracadabra, set in a doll maker’s workshop. This lighthearted tale of mistaken identity and confused lovers follows mischievous Swanilda, her impetuous suitor Franz and the eccentric toymaker Dr.Coppelius as they are brought to life by sparkling choreography and the animated score of Delibes. Coppélia is perfect for first-time ballet goers, families and everyone in between.
Giselle - The most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score. From the visual splendour of the rustic villagers happily gathering the harvest at the start of the story to the eerie moonlit forest haunted by beautifully drifting spirits, this production is unforgettable.
The Nutcracker - This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall outside, the warm glow of the open fire sends flickering shadows across the boughs of the Christmas tree and all the presents beneath. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins... www.raymondgubbay.co.uk

Preventing suicide is everybody’s business: one in five people have suicidal thoughts at some point in their life. Most of us may have been affected by suicide in some way either directly or indirectly. Suicide is not inevitable and can be prevented.
Self-harm is when somebody intentionally harms or injures their body. It’s often a way of coping and/or expressing overwhelming emotional distress.
The severity of self-harm is not linked to the level of distress. Self-harm can affect anyone of any age. Self-harm can be a risk factor for suicide, but not everyone who self-harms will take their own life. It’s important not to make assumptions, but it’s important to let someone who selfharms know that it’s safe to talk about self-harm and suicide.
Harmless provide support for people who self-harm and those close to them.
