Festive Recycling Tips.

Top festive recycling tips can help to make your Christmas even greener: Remove ribbons, bows, tape, glitter and other adornments before recycling wrapping paper or cards Do the scrunch test! If the wrapping paper stays scrunched it’s good for recycling - if it bounces back it’s foil or plastic lined and should be put in the general waste bin. Only put paper and card that is clean and dry in your recycling bin. Anything containing food residue or foodstains like paper napkins or kitchen roll should go in the general waste bin. Discard the inner packing materials from your cardboard boxes before flattening them and putting them in your recycling bin. Natural parts of Christmas decorations, such as ivy and holly, can be recycled with green or garden waste, once artificial elements such as bows and glitter have been removed. Remember - If in doubt leave it out - no food trays, foil wrappers or punnets in your kerbside recycling bin. Are you having a real Christmas tree this year? If so, remember that, once you’ve finished with it, you can take it to your local recycling centre where it could be chipped to make paths in parks and gardens or shredded for composting. Another great way of turning waste into a resource. Please note: TREETOP’s Hospice in Risley used to do a tree recycling service to raise money for the hospice, but unfortunately the service has been cancelled this year Local Recycling centres: Recycling centres are open every day of the year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The opening times of the recycling centres vary depending on the time of year: January and February: 8am to 4pm March: 8am to 6pm April to September: 8am to 8pm October: 8am to 6pm November and December: 8am to 4pm 1. Winter Gardening January is the time to get chilli seed started, if your chillies of choice are varieties of Capsicum chinense (Capsicum annuum prefers a late-February sowing), so have some trays and compost ready for sowing, and check your heated propagator is working, as these seeds need heat (25°C) to germinate. You could also start broad bean seeds off under glass in January, as well as shallot and onion sets in module trays.

If you’re attempting to grow anything in the greenhouse over winter, keep nearby glass free of bubble-wrap insulation, since the plastic will dramatically reduce the amount of light that can reach through to the plants inside. And, as always, remember that having good ventilation and air flow around the plants is crucial, so open doors and windows as often as possible on sunny winter days. Grey mould spreads rapidly in cool, damp conditions and air circulation can help prevent it, but it’s still important to avoid chilling draughts, be careful to not accidentally leave the door open.

20

Make your greenhouse as beautiful in winter as it is in summer by creating displays of bulbs such as fragrant Hyacinths and Narcissus, or Amaryllis). These bulbs are often given as gifts over Christmas. Start the bulbs into growth by watering sparingly at first, increasing the amount of tepid water you give them as growth appears. Then when they’re actively growing, keep them moist but not waterlogged.

Garden hygiene is important for preventing the spread of diseases such as Phytophthora, bacterial canker and box blight to name a few. So use winter time to clean garden tools and remove soil from boots. Use a suitable disinfectant, soak tools for approx 20 mins, then make sure all tools are dried with an old towel before putting away.

The Origins of Christmas Carols. Dating back to as early as the 13th Century, Christmas carols have become an integral part of our annual holiday celebrations. The notion of groups of carollers assembling in public spaces was assumed to have started around the 19th-century . Orginally called ‘waits’, these collections of singers used to gather to perform for passers-by, who traditionally thanked them with tasty offerings of drinks or mince pies.It became known as wassailing and continues today. Groups continue to sing – in squares or door-to-door, and of course in Churches. Silent Night - Originally written in German, ‘Stille Nacht’ was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber with lyrics by Joseph Mohr, and was translated to English in 1859. During the Christmas truce of 1914 during World War I, the carol was sung simultaneously by English and German troops. In the Bleak Mid-Winter – Gustav Holst version Based on a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti, this carol was written sometime before 1872 in response to a magazine request for a Christmas poem. The poem became recognised as a carol after it appeared in The English Hymnal in 1906, with music by Gustav Holst. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing The lyrics were written by Charles Wesley, who started the Methodist movement in the Church of England. O Little Town of Bethlehem Following a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Rector Phillips Brooks wrote the text to this hymn after he was inspired by the view of Bethlehem from the hills of Palestine. In 1871, his church organist Lewis Redner wrote the melody for the local Sunday school children’s choir. The Holly and the Ivy This carol is inspired by the hope that the singers would survive the difficult winter months like the holly and the ivy. Now, they are brought inside for good luck. God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen An old Christmas carol, this dates back to at least the 16th century, possibly earlier. Although most people assume the first line is suggesting merry gentlemen should rest, in early English it actually means something closer to ‘remain bountiful, gentlemen’. The Three Kings Written in 1857 by Peter Cornelius, this carol is designed so three male voices can sing a verse each to correspond with the three kings. Good King Wenceslas This carol is based on the life of Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia, who became a martyr after being killed by his wicked brother, Boleslaw the Bad. Wenceslas’s body lies in St Vitus’s Cathedral, Prague, and he was recently made a patron saint of the Czech Republic. In Dulci Jubilo Dating back to the Middle ages, this carol is a mixture of both German and Latin text. Many composers have since been influenced by its melody, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt with his piano suite Weihnachtsbaum and Gustav Holst. And of course, there’s Mike Oldfield’s popular version.

Tackling the cost of Christmas and New Year. With increases in bills and the cost of living as well as taxes going up and continuing issues around the pandemic, this Christmas will be a tough one for many. Taking out payday or doorstep loans is a bad idea - they might seem like an easy way to get cash quickly, but you’ll end up paying an arm and a leg due to sky-high interest rates. The cheapest places to borrow money will always be a bank, building society or the Notts and Lincs Credit Union - who may be able to help where others can’t if you have a poor credit history. Visit: www.nottsandlincscu.co.uk If you are struggling generally with bills, debt, eviction or other money issues, Nottingham City Council’s friendly welfare rights team can help you. They can point you in the right direction. Call 0115 915 1355 (8:30am – 4:50pm) or email welfarerights@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

£1m Town Centre Recovery Fund Announced for Stapleford Businesses Following approval back in November of the six core projects from the Stapleford Town Deal programme, the Town Deal Executive Board are pleased to announce the launch of the first project – the Town Centre Recovery Fund. A total of £1m has been made available for the Town Centre Recovery Fund. The fund will offer grant support to high street businesses in Stapleford Town Centre, and will be split into two grants to support different aspects of business recovery. The Business Continuity Grant aims to support business resilience and growth over the long term, sustaining occupancy levels within Stapleford Town Centre. This grant will support existing businesses looking to expand the way they distribute their services. It is anticipated a maximum of £200,000 will be spent on this portion of the wider Town Centre. The Building Development Fund is to create buildings of the future; improving accessibility, energy efficiency and the look and feel of Stapleford Town Centre. It is anticipated a maximum of £800,000 will be issued through this part of the fund. The Chair of the Stapleford Town Deal Executive Board says, “The launch of the Town Centre Recovery Fund will provide a Chair of the Stapleford Town Deal Executive Board fantastic opportunity for businesses in Stapleford’s high street, 40

to develop their own proposals for how the Town Deal can collaboratively invest in their businesses, improve the building stock in Stapleford, encouraging more investment in the area” “The Executive Board knew this financial commitment was vital for the town centre, which is why the Fund was included in the Town Investment Plan, and see the £1million of total grant support over the next 12 months as a catalyst for Town Deal Programme and its various projects as they move into delivery phase in early 2022”. The fund will open to applications on Monday 10 January 2022. Applicants will be encouraged to use an online application form once the link is made available in the new year. In order to provide businesses in Stapleford Town Centre, which may look to make an application for grant funding, a number of supporting documents have now been published on the Council’s Town Centre Recovery Fund webpage. This early information on the fund will assist businesses who might consider their proposals for grant funding, understand and interpret the Stapleford Town Investment Plan (TIP) and seek quotations (where applicable) to carry out works in good time. Further information will become available in the lead up to the application open date.

Broxtowe Mayor presents Design Awards. Beeston Civic members were joined at the recent AGM by judges and recipients of Civic Design Awards. They assembled at the Pearson Centre for presentation of awards made by Broxtowe Borough Mayor Councillor Richard MacRae. A formidable panel of judges, all leaders in their respective specialisms had come together to assess the competition entries. Panel member Gavin Richards, Head of Architecture Department at Nottingham Trent University, commented: “The awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise the efforts of local designers and artists who are contributing to the vibrancy and life of Beeston. Good civic design can enhance the sense of place and create beautiful spaces for the people of our towns and cities”. Nominations had come from Civic members and the general public covering categories featuring residential, retail and commercial buildings together with street and landscape projects - each of which has helped to improve their setting. Commended nominations included: Dementia homes on Willoughby Street in the centre of Beeston, an extension to 4 Devonshire Avenue with the newly developed multiscreen ARC cinema being highly commended. Outright winner was The Beeston Street Art Project.

42

Enthused by the enduring voluntary work undertaken to by Beeston Civic Society and the quality of entries Councillor MacRae commented: “Presenting the Civic Design Awards was really special and more so to announce Beeston Street Art as the overall winners. Having wanted to do street art back in the 80s/90s and being told no. Then 30 years later becoming a Councillor and sitting there when the decisions were made to allow it to happen was a something I really enjoyed being part of. I have watched, with great interest, as the project has grown and grown - presenting the award feels like a full circle to me”.

Pictured are Councillor Barbara Carr, Vice-Chair of Housing, with Mayor Councillor Richard MacRae presenting the Beeston Civic Design Award 2021 winners’ certificate to Edson O’Shea – son of the Street Art Project Director Jeanie O’Shea.

Tree-mendous Gesture of Good Will from Nottingham Funeral Directors this Festive Season. A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service is showing its support to its local communities by donating 92 Christmas trees to churches across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire after what has been a difficult year for parishes with many having to close as a result of the pandemic. The Christmas tree donation is a tradition the family-run funeral directors have upheld for over 70 years, to spread festive joy and bring together the communities served by its 27 funeral homes across the region. Historically the trees were donated to the inner-city Nottingham parishes, but this year the area was extended as a mark of respect after what has been a difficult year of lockdowns and closures. On receiving the donation, Lydia Cartwright, Team Rector at Clifton Parish, said: “We really are incredibly grateful to have received this thoughtful donation from A.W. Lymn. As soon as the tree was delivered, we couldn’t wait to decorate it in time for all the school visits, Christmas services and events that we have coming up over the festive period.” The 92 Christmas trees are grown in Scotland and delivered via carrier to each Church. On why Lymns has kept the tradition going for long, Jackie Lymn Rose, Director and fourth generation at A.W. Lymn, said: “Giving back to our local communities is incredibly important to us as a family business. Having 44

funeral homes in so many areas in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, it’s important to stay connected to the church communities that we serve and show our thanks for all the amazing work they do. “The pandemic has had a real impact on the Church, with sadly many having to close over the past 18 months. We hope this donation helps to bring our local parishes and communities together as they decorate the trees in readiness for all the festive activities, celebrations and services.” The fifth-generation family business has been helping the bereaved for more than 110 years, with quality of service and value for money at the heart of its ethos.

All things Christmas Christmas clutter- Lets talk batteries

Lithium-ion batteries which are found in many electronic devices, toys, laptops, power tools and can cause fires if put in household waste bins. Once crushed in the back of bin lorries they can ignite other flammable waste such as paper or plastic and cause damage and disruption to collection services in your area.As many of us declutter ahead of Christmas please remember to dispose of electrical items and batteries correctly. Small electronic devices are accepted at the county recycling centres and special containers are also available at the sites for removed batteries. Large retailers like supermarkets who sell batteries will also have containers for the recycling of batteries.

Switch to LED Christmas lights

Did you know that if every UK household swapped a string of incandescent lights for its LED equivalent, we could save more than £11 million and 29,000 tonnes of CO2, just over the 12 days of Christmas?. When it comes to eco-friendly Christmas decorations, LEDs are far better than traditional twinkling incandescent lights, because they use up to 80% less energy. Switch to solar-powered lights outdoors, and put both sets on a timer. You’ll not only make environmental savings but your energy bills will be reduced too.

Reduce your food waste

Most of us are pretty good at getting creative with our leftovers throughout the year, and budget accordingly, but when Christmas comes we can be a little more wasteful and we somehow spend alot more money . One option is to buy less. That can be tricky though when you have guests, or worried about unexpected folks popping round. Use your composter and green waste bin for scraps, too.A good tip is to ensure that the food in your fridge is eaten well before your Christmas and NewYear shop, that way you won’t have to throw good edible food out just to make room for new. Remember that the supermarkets are open just after Christmas too, so no need to go mad! If you need to get rid of surplus food, check with your local foodbanks or the Trussell Trust if they can accept it. Try to look for recipes online or from your libary to make use of any food you may have left over, its amazing what you can make and think of the money you save too! Now there are Food waste apps, such as Olio that you can use. They connect you to people in need in your local area. You simply list what’s available, snap a photo and share your location with other app users. Use your composter and green waste bin for scraps, too. 46

Irish Cream Tiramisu No bake, easy make! Serves 8 Ideal for an easy party dessert

Ingredients 4 eggs 100g golden caster sugar 500g tub mascarpone 100ml Irish cream liqueur (you can use Baileys coffee flavour) 300ml strong coffee, made with 2 tbsp coffee granules and 300ml boiling water 175g sponge fingers 25g dark chocolate 2 tsp cocoa powder Method 1. Separate the egg whites and yolks into two large bowls. Whisk the whites until stiff. Add the sugar to the yolks and whisk again (no need to clean first) until thick and foamy – this will take about 5 mins. Whisk the mascarpone and cream liqueur into the egg yolks until you can’t see any streaks of cheese. Carefully fold the whites into the mascarpone mixture with a large metal spoon to keep in as much air as possible. 2.Get your serving dish ready (approx 20 x 15 cm). Pour the coffee into a shallow dish and dip in a few sponge fingers at a time, turning them for a few seconds until they are nicely soaked, but not soggy. Layer these into the dish until you have used half the biscuits, then evenly spread over half of the creamy mixture. Using the coarse side of the grater, grate over most of the chocolate, then repeat the sponge and cream layers (you should use up all the coffee). If you want an attractive finish, you can pipe on the final cream layer. 3 .Cover and chill for a few hours or overnight. This can now be kept in the fridge for up to two days. To serve, dust with cocoa powder and grate over the remaining chocolate.

Keeping Food Fresh Tips 1. Keep food in it’s original packaging whenever possible, as it will almost certainly have been designed with food freshness and preservation in mind. This is especially true of vacuum-packed meat packaging, but also applies to fruit and veg, where strategically-placed air holes can make a big difference to shelf life. 2. Avoid packing your fridge so full that food on one shelf is touching the shelf above. This can prevent cool air from circulating, pushing up the temperature in parts of the fridge and inviting heat-loving bacteria to tuck into your food. 3. Line the your bottom of your salad/veg drawer in the fridge with a few sheets of kitchen roll absorbs the condensation that the veggies generate as they chill. Excess moisture can make your fresh foods wilt and much faster, so the paper keeps them fresher for longer, AND it keeps your fridge cleaner without any extra effort, because no one deserves to spend their time wiping up cucumber gunk. 4. Sprouted potatoes are un-edible. It turns out the best way to prevent them turning is to keep an apple in the bag – apples produce ethylene gas, which keeps potatoes fresher and firmer for a few more weeks. 5. ....But keep apples away from other fruits and veg. Ethylene gas may be good for potatoes, but it’s bad for almost everything else. Keep apples out of the fruit bowl and in a plastic bag in the fridge and you should suddenly find that your other purchases keep much better.

KEIFER SUTHERLAND AT THE NORWICH UEA SUNDAY 30TH JANUARY 2022 !

From ‘Lost Boys’ and ‘Stand By Me’ to ‘24’, everyone knows about Kiefer Sutherland’s phenomenally successful acting career. Yet in recent years, he has focused on applying his masterful storytelling ability to music, with two acclaimed albums spanning a spectrum of country and Americana. His second album, 2019’s ‘Reckless & Me’, proved to be particularly popular in the UK. It debuted at 9 on the Official Albums Chart, and went straight to 1 on the Americana, Country and Independent album charts. It eventually became the UK’s second biggest selling country album of the year. Now Kiefer Sutherland is set to release his third album ‘Bloor Street’ on January 21st via a new deal with Cooking Vinyl. The album is launched alongside the announcement of an extensive UK and European headline tour that commences in January 2022. Kiefer Sutherland commented, “Writing and recording this album was a unique experience given the pandemic and subsequent restrictions that followed. I found myself, like so many, with a block of time that I had never been afforded before, which allowed me to not only reflect upon my life but also to write about it. Music, whether touring or recording, has always been a personal extension of storytelling for me. I couldn’t be more excited to share these new songs and, hopefully sooner than later, play them for audiences around the world.” The album was produced and mixed by the multiple Grammy Award winner Chris Lord-Alge (Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood), and recorded at MIX LA Studios in Los Angeles. Kiefer Sutherland will return to these shores in January with his full live band to embark upon his biggest UK and Ireland headline tour to date. He will then take the tour into Europe with dates in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The Guardian’s live review stated, “The action star’s whiskey-sodden country music set is genuinely poignant.” 62

Grapevine Advice on Selling. New Year is a great time for a de-clutter. Sort out anything that you don’t use anymore or don’t need. Books, unworn clothes, DVD’s, furniture, leisure equipment, either sell them or donate to worthy charities. If you decide to sell those unwanted gifts or items, the money can be used towards the credit card bill after Christmas, unexpected bills, or saved to use towards next Christmas or a much needed summer break. It’s amazing what people will buy, furniture that you don’t use or like can be exactly what someone is looking for, some are used for upcycling, that can be sold on again. Clothes can be bought and re-used, fabrics can be made into a new garment. Household items are always useful. People will buy if the price is good. Selling kids games (or adults) that are no longer used can make money to buy new ones. Kids soon grow out of their toys , encourage them to look after them and keep them in good condition, and as they grow older they will learn that de-cluttering is a good thing as they can sell them on, it’s their toys so the money they have from the proceeds they can save (open a little bank account for them) or they can buy another toy. DIY and tools sell very well, as they are expensive to buy new, make sure to list the brand and condition etc. Be careful when selling to someone you don’t know, most people are genuine, but it’s best to accept cash in the hand.
