Nottinghamshire Domestic Abuse charity receives distinguished White Ribbon Accreditation. Broxtowe Women’s Project (BWP) has progressed their campaigning to end all male violence against women and girls by receiving White Ribbon Accreditation. White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people, especially men and boys, to take action individually, and collectively, and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence against women and girls. BWP’s Partnerships Manager, Chris Harris, said: “Over the last 20 years we’ve supported thousands of women and children who have survived Domestic Abuse, helping them to become safe and in control of their own lives. “We’ve mostly reached out to female audiences to do so. However, to really effect change, and to reduce the number of families experiencing Domestic Abuse in our county, we knew we would need to extend the conversation further. Which is why it was so important for us to attain White Ribbon accreditation. “Starting with our campaign in October 2021 for White Ribbon Day on November 25, we’ll be working hard to raise awareness of male violence against women and girls by reaching out to men and boys across Nottinghamshire.” Commitments made by BWP have included the appointment of male White Ribbon Ambassadors, proactively engaging male volunteering, improving staff training, policies and procedures, 10

and looking at opportunities to work with different community groups all year around. Anthea Sully, Chief Executive of White Ribbon UK said: “Our call to end violence by raising awareness, educating and campaigning to bring about change is greatly strengthened by working together with our White Ribbon accredited organisations. Our partners are able to engage with many thousands of people to change the cultures that lead to violence against women and girls. We are delighted to welcome BWP as one of our White Ribbon Accredited organisations. Together we can prevent violence happening in the first place”. White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people, especially men and boys, to individually and collectively take action and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence. To wear a white ribbon is to promise to never to commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women.

WASTE NOT! What to do with stale bread.

The UK wastes more than 10 billion tonnes of food every year most of it unnecessarily. Bread in the UK is the most wasted food, a large proportion of what is thrown away can still be iperfectly good to eat even if the bread has gone slightly stale. Try and find ways to use it.

From bread puddings to bread crumbs.

1.Try making pizza style toast with left over bread, just cover with chopped tomatoes and grated cheese and place under the grill. 2.To transform stale bread, just sprinkle with water then pop briefly in a warm oven. 3. If you have mouldy bread which isn’t safe to eat and it doesn’t need to go in the bin, (to avoid landfill) you could put the bread on your compost heap. 4. Make fresh bread crumbs by removing the crust either from a white or brown loaf. Place in a food processor or blender until finely chopped, then freeze and use in recipes later. Bread crumbs can be stored for a short while in an airtight container. Bread crumbs are great for topping casseroles cakes and for also coating fish and meat 5.Simple recipe - Butter a baking dish and arrange alternative alternative layers of chopped apples, (you can also add sultanas) and bread crumbs, start and end with a bread crumb layer , sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top of each apple and then bake until golden. Serve with cream or ice cream . 6.Bread crumbs can be used as a crispy coating for homemade fish cakes. 7. Have you tried “Eggy Dip Bread”? If your bread has gone hard , dip the sliced bread into a beaten egg turn it over a few times and make sure it’s well coated. Quickly fry and then add a chopping of your choice you could use tomatoes, cheese, baked beans, mushrooms or blueberries, bananas. 8. If you are having soup, you can make it more interesting by placing croutons on the top. Dice the bread, fry quickly with olive oil . 9. A favourite pudding is bread and butter pudding. There are various recipes for this, but basically it’s buttered slices of old bread, layered and baked with a mixture of egg and milk, (try adding some fruit like sultanas). Sugar is then sprinkled on the top. 10. As a lot of mums may know, you can give the crusts from toast for babies that are teething, like rusks, but take care not to leave them unattended with food. 11. If you buy whole loaf sometimes it takes a while to use up all those slices, so you can freeze half (remember to slice it first )and then defrost a few slices as and when you need them for sandwiches. 12. Freezing loaves of bread helps to keep your freeezer full and more energy efficient .

DID YOU KNOW? The nation’s favourite cooking apple the Bramley Apple originated in the pretty market town of Southwell 200 years ago. Every single Bramley apple is decended from that tree. The tree was so popular that a group of Japanese tourists flew to the UK to specifically visit that tree. It was in 1809 - That the first Bramley tree grew from pips planted by a young girl, Mary Ann Brailsford, in her garden in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England. Miss Nancy Harrison is credited as the primary carer of the original Bramley Apple Tree, housed at the now named “Bramley Tree House” cottage where she cared for the tree from the end of the Second World War, until her death in 2014. Nancy spent her whole life around the Bramley Apple Tree, either living in, or next door to, Brailsford Cottage, ensuring the tree’s safety and presenting it to fans from around the world. Matthew Bramley, gave his name to the Bramley Apple fruit in its initial sales by Henry Merryweather, as he owned the cottage where the original Bramley Apple Tree had been planted. Bio-scientist Prof Ted Cocking, from Nottingham University, has studied the tree for many years and used tissue cultures to micro-propagate the tree and create clones of the original Bramley, as the tree is dying. There are now more than 300 Bramley growers in England.

“Starting with our campaign in October 2021 for White Ribbon Day on November 25, we’ll be working hard to raise awareness of male violence against women and girls by reaching out to men and boys across Nottinghamshire.” Commitments made by BWP have included the appointment of male White Ribbon Ambassadors, proactively engaging male volunteering, improving staff training, policies and procedures, 36

and looking at opportunities to work with different community groups all year around.

Dedicate lights this Christmas in memory of your loved ones. Christmas is a special time when we think of those who were once so close to us. With a smile and a tear, you’ll remember your loved ones and you’ll want to keep their memory alive. You’re not alone. This Christmas, Treetops Hospice invites you to dedicate a light on our virtual Christmas tree. Each light is a life remembered and a memory that lives on. Each light will also help to keep Treetops nursing local people. How to dedicate a light. It is very simple to dedicate a light just go to treetops.org.uk/lights. As well as adding a message you upload a photograph and share your dedication with others through your social media or email. Donations made when dedicating a light make a real difference. Last year our tree shone with 600 lights, each a celebration of someone being remembered. These donations helped me and my fellow nurses care for around 80 local people over 25 days. Join Our Remembrance Service – free for everyone Our annual Light Up A Life service is a remembrance event held at Christmas time. It is a beautiful way to honour a loved one’s memory at this special time of year. As it is online you can come together with friends and family near and far to enjoy the music, readings, and take time to remember. The filmed service will be shown at 6pm on Sunday 5 December on our website treetops.org.uk/lights and will be available afterwards for you to view at your convenience. If we receive your dedication by 21 November, the names of your loved ones will be included in the online service. Contact fundraising@treetops.org.uk Tel: 0115 949 1264

A.W. Lymn Celebrate 20 Years of it’s Trainee Programme. Nottinghamshire’s largest independent funeral directors, A.W. Lymn The Family Funeral Service, is celebrating 20 years since its trainee programme was first set up, designed to offer the opportunity to gain five qualifications to kick-start a career in the funeral industry. Since it was launched in 2001, the programme has gained prominence as the cost of university education has increased and unemployment levels have risen. The four-year residential course offers the chance to work in each department of the business ranging from fleet maintenance to the mortuary and is open to those with at least two A-Level passes or equivalent. The business welcomes anyone with a true interest in the funeral sector who is looking for a career change or an alternative to university. Commercial Director at A.W. Lymn, Pete Clarson, who oversees the trainees said: “We are so proud to be celebrating 20 years of our trainee programme – and what a ride it’s been! We originally put the programme together to offer more choices to those looking for alternative career choices other than attending university. “It has certainly been a learning curve throughout the years and the programme has been tweaked along the journey to better suit the needs of our trainees, but we are very proud of how far we’ve come 44

and the number of individuals we’ve helped kick-start a career in our profession. The programme has had many success stories over the years, with one of the first trainees still working for the business now, 20 years later. Starting in 2001 while studying for his A-Levels, Jonathan Baker is a testament to the success of the programme, after rising through the ranks to the role of Senior Funeral Director for the Mansfield area. Jonathan, now aged 38, said: “I am extremely thankful for the experience the trainee programme has provided me with, and for further igniting my passion for the funeral industry. Being given the chance to experience every aspect of the business you can then go on to work in whatever department suits you best – there are so many opportunities.” Altogether the programme offers placements in all eight areas of the A.W. Lymn business which include funeral arranging and directing, stone masonry, floristry, coffin preparation, mortuary, fleet maintenance, driver/ bearer and administration - and at the end of the programme trainees will put everything they have learned into action at one of the funeral homes in the business. Nigel Lymn Rose, Company Chairman at A.W. Lymn, added: “Over the years we have witnessed first-hand the interest and passion for the funeral industry and wanted to offer an official training scheme for those keen to pursue a career in our profession. It’s been a real honour to

PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

watch the trainees progress through the programme over the years and know that we are playing our part in developing young talent.“We’re delighted to have been running the programme for over 20 years now and look forward to welcoming another trainee next year.” The fifth-generation family business has been helping the bereaved for over 110 years, with quality of service and value for money at the heart of its ethos. A.W. Lymn now operates 27 funeral homes throughout Nottinghamshire and South Derbyshire. Applications for the A.W. Lymn September 2022 course are now open.

An indie-rock powerhouse, Andy Bennett has had an illustrious career working with the likes of Ocean Colour Scene, Liam Gallagher, and Roy Wood. As a singer songwriter Bennett is a versatile artist with influences ranging from Robert Plant to The Beatles. Some of the most influential artists in Bennett’s career have been Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Crosby Still and Nash, ELO, Jackson Brown, Pearl Jam,and Eric Clapton. A talented musician, Andy is multi-skilled playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass and drums. He is also recognised for his songwriting style once described as “musical and lyrical poetry” (Flick of the Finger 2016).To date, Bennett has worked or performed with Andy Fairweatherlow, Paul Weller, PP Arnold, Bev Bevan, Roy Wood, Liam Gallagher, Dodgy, Toploader, Brian McFadden at venues including as NEC arena, Wembley arena, Glasgow SECC Hydro and Royal Albert Hall. With his roots evolving from a career with the world renowned Ocean Colour Scene, Andy has big plans for the future with his alreadysuccessful solo career. Early Career - While Bennett’s career started much earlier as a guitarist for Ocean Colour Scene, playing as their live guitarist and recording tracks for studio albums. He was also keen to make his own mark on the music industry. Bennett’s first foray into band life started when he formed the band The Elements (previously known as Sargent) Signed to the label Acid Jazz, The Elements quickly found fame with their brand of anthemic, mod-revival-esque rock. Their single ‘Caught in the Rain’ charted at number 7 in the indie charts, and they supported Ocean Colour Scene on their biggest arena tour in 1998. Ocean Colour Scene - Andy’s relationship with Ocean Colour Scene began when, aged just eight years old, he was taught to play guitar by OCS’s Steve Craddock. Andy maintained a good relationship with the band and when original bassist Damon Michella left in 2003, he was asked to replace him. Bennett’s first tour with Ocean Colour Scene was in 2004. Throughout his time with Ocean Colour Scene, Andy brought his own style and influence contributing to the band’s growth and evolution. Most notably with his track ‘Old Pair of Jeans’ on the ‘Saturday’ album and through his guitar performances during live shows and tours. ‘Old Pair of Jeans’ was well received by critics with The Digital Fix saying "It just gets better with every song a winner. The jaunty ‘Old Pair of Jeans’ is rollicking fun: "I wish you didn't get hung up so easily / When you're bound fall apart you always fall apart at the seams / So worn and so torn. Like an old pair of jeans." 48

Andy’s work with Ocean Colour Scene included: · One for the Road (2004) (Guitar, Background Vocals) · A Hyperactive Workout for the Flying Squad (2005) (Guitar) · Live Acoustic at the Jam House (2006) (Acoustic and Electric Guitar, Background Vocals) · Live at Birmingham Academy (2006) · On the Leyline (2007) (Acoustic and Electric Guitar) · Live at the Town Hall (2008) · Saturday (2010) (Composer) · 21 (2010) (Guitar, Composer) As well as a touring with the band from 2004. Solo Career - In 2015, Andy made the decision to leave Ocean Colour Scene and focus on his solo career. His first single ‘Hole in the Road’ was championed by both local and national radio stations, including BBC 6 music. This was closely followed by his second single ‘Drift Away’ which again attracted great reviews and airtime on both BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 music. In November 2016 Andy released his first solo album Thinkin’ Drinkin’ Singin’. Engineered by Austen Kilburn, the album was a ten-song collection drawing inspiration from The Beatles, with elements of Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller and Andy’s own unique style running throughout. The album was given a 4-star rating out of five review from Planet Mosh, and five stars from Flick of the Finger. Andy’s most recent single ‘Do it all for love’ was released in 2019 garnering plays on national radio stations. Following the success of his first album, Andy has been working on his much-anticipated second solo album. The second album is complete and due for release in early 2022. Publication is proof of survivors’ freedom to create. A magazine packed with poetry, art and imagery is the powerful result of a collaboration between the National Justice Museum, local artist Boseda Olawoye, and women supported by Broxtowe Women’s Project (BWP) earlier this year. The women, who are all survivors of Domestic Abuse and have been supported by Nottingham charity, BWP, met at the National Justice Museum to see the printed publication of their work for the first time. Creative Community Engagement Manager, Bo, explained: “Throughout the summer we met at creative workshops inspired by an exhibition at the National Justice Museum , called ‘Power, Freedom to Create’. This featured artwork created by people in prison, detention centres or in confinement, and together we reflected on how people use creativity to get through difficult periods. “Using prompt and emotion cards, the women, who are all survivors of Domestic Abuse, asked themselves how the artworks made them feel. We then created our own pieces of art, sticking to a limited stock of creative materials such as newspaper, soap, paper and pens to generate our own artwork, reflecting the limits on people in confinement.” Partnership Manager, Chris, from BWP said: “We are so proud of the finished zine, and the women who created it. They have all gone on a creative journey through this project and have discovered real talent in themselves and new ways to reflect on 54

their experiences and express themselves. We must thank the National Justice Museum, and Bo for inviting us to join this project.” Andrea Hadley-Johnson from the National Justice Museum said: “The Power: Freedom to Create exhibition inspired an incredible participatory programme around it, coproduced closely and kindly with many incredible people.

“Our open and exploratory approach is designed to bring people together, sharing ideas and perspectives, to create something extraordinary together. This project is a beautiful example of what that process can achieve. We are honoured to have worked with BWP, Heya and Bo Olawoye on this important and affecting project towards such a joyful outcome.” Wellbeing Officer, Justine from BWP said: “‘This was so much more than the creative project it started out to be. The sessions were full of conversation and different emotions which were then represented in the individual pieces created by the women.” The zine will now be shared wider, which the group hopes will create a ripple effect that will inspire more people to create. If you would like to see the zine, visit

Get great discounts and prizes when you combat climate change with Green Rewards! Nine councils and two universities unite for first-of-its-kind partnership to tackle climate crisis green rewards Join Green Rewards today and earn great discounts, vouchers and prizes at local businesses and projects in your community for playing your part to combat climate change and achieve net zero! That’s the message from all nine local Councils in Nottinghamshire who have joined forces with local universities and creator Jump for a trailblazing partnership! It provides a new Green Rewards app and web platform which means Notts residents can accumulate points and earn the prizes for many activities they do every day at home or out and about that help lower their carbon footprint. It is part of the Universities for Nottingham civic collaboration which aims to improve the way the universities work with each other and their local partners to help change the lives of local people for the better. Sign up for free now at www.notts. greenrewards.co.uk or download the Green Rewards app on iOS and Android. Search for ‘Notts; Green Rewards’ in your device’s app store. In similar fashion to rewards points at retailers, all residents need to do is log their day to day activities that highlight how they are decreasing the amount of carbon they create, such as: • Walking to work or school instead of taking the car • Cycling or using public transport • Putting your recycling bin out with all the correct recyclables • Switching off a light or switch at home • Taking a shower of four minutes or less and many, many more! 56

A full list of how you can redeem points is available on the app or at: www.notts.greenrewards.co.uk and when you accumulate sufficient points you can then earn the discounts, vouchers and prizes. There is also £20 worth of vouchers for the top two residents in each council area who earn the most points each month, to claim at local businesses, donate to worthwhile causes or projects and in some districts and Boroughs there’s prizes too for the top points earning wards. All the Councils across Notts including Ashfield District Council, Bassetlaw District Council, Broxtowe Borough Council, Gedling Borough Council, Mansfield District Council, Newark and Sherwood District Council, Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council have come together to drive forward and fund the platform and app to residents. They have followed the lead of Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham who use the app to encourage their staff and students to log their everyday activities. Through the Universities for Nottingham initiative partners have pledged to tackle sustainable travel and transport and develop joint programmes to change behaviour, ensuring the lessons learnt are passed on to all in the region. The first collaborative sustainability engagement programme of its kind in the UK, it features the simple carbon-reduction activities that residents can complete. It means Nottinghamshire is the first County in the country to see all its major local authority and education partners collaborate on a climate change reduction project in this way ahead of next month’s COP 26, providing an easy to use platform and incentives for all.

Councillor Helen Skinner, Chair of the Council's Environment and Climate Change Committee said: “The Green Rewards Programme is a fabulous initiative which all Broxtowe residents can take part in. Every effort, however small can earn points to climb up the leader board. Broxtowe is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2027 and projects like this will enable us to reach this ambitious target by working together and encouraging one another.” Nottingham Trent University’s Head of Sustainability Charmaine Morrell said: “We launched Green Rewards at Nottingham Trent University in February 2019, so I’m delighted that the app is being rolled out across the whole of Nottinghamshire. “This is a huge achievement given that all the local authorities within Nottinghamshire have come together, united in their desire to get everyone involved to combat climate change. AtNTU alone 360,000 kilograms of carbon has already been saved, the same weight as 90 elephants.” Andy Nolan, Director of Sustainability at the University of Nottingham said: “We’ve been delighted with the way our staff and students have used the Green Rewards App to log the positive actions they are taking to help achieve our sustainability goals and it’s great to see how commitments made through the Universities for Nottingham initiative are expanding across the county. “We’ve already seen 23,000 positive actions, saving over 25,000kg of CO2.” The partnership will support each council’s target of reaching net zero carbon emissions before 2040, with some committing to an earlier date of 2030.Each councils’ residents will see different activities and content when they access the Green Rewards platform, ensuring it is tailored to their council’s goals. Graham Simmonds, Chief Executive, Jump, says: “We are delighted to be celebrating the launch of Notts Councils’ ground-breaking Green Rewards programme.“This is a significant step in the race to reach net zero TO ADVERTISE PLEASE CALL

and it’s very exciting to see the eight District and Borough Councils plus the County Council and two universities coming together and collaborating so effectively. “I’m excited by the range of carbon busting activities for residents to get involved in, and with lots of people taking lots of individual actions this will collectively add up to a big difference.”

SLADE come to BIRMINGHAM – Asylum on Saturday 18th December 2021!

WIN TWO TICKETS!

SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 50 years. With their unique blend of perfect pop rock'n'roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits...plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world. Slade’s chart career has spanned 6 decades and their enduring songs “Far Far Away”, "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Coz I Luv You" are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the worlds’ biggestcompanies. Slade first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved 58

their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song "Get Down And Get With It" then, released in October of the same year "Coz I Luv You" was the bands first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe. Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe's biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade's catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:- "Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama We'er All Crazee Now", "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Gudbye T' Jane", along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the worlds biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down",which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. A second successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 60,000 people, consolidated the bands

position and paved the way for the single “Lock Up Your Daughters”, and the album “Til Deaf Do Us Part”. While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit “My Oh My” to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of “Cum On Feel The Noize”, which proved so successful that they followed it up with “Mama Weer All Crazee Now”. Throughout the start of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop’n’rock. The early nineties saw the bands “Radio Wall Of Sound” hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade members Dave Hill and Don Powell decided to return to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two month tour of Australia. Slade have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK “Merry Christmas Everybody” tour in December. They have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Spain & France. Having just returned from a festival in Gibraltar, next stop is Greenland and Faroe Islands. Now in 2020, Led by founder member

Dave Hill on Lead Guitar with John Berry who joined in 2003 on Lead Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar and Violin. John has also played Bass with Mud, The Sweet, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Tremeloes, Bay City Rollers & The Rubettes. Joining John on Lead Vocals and Keys is Russell Keefe, having played in many original bands in his early years, he has also recorded albums for Polygram & United Artists, Russell has toured with The Pretty Things and Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers, Alex Bines now joins on Drums, Alex has toured with Wilko Johnson, The Rubettes and is also a Drum teacher. lade today is still one of the most exciting bands on the road, and their stage performance is a dynamic, powerful and exhilarating rollercoaster ride of pure unadulterated rock’n’roll.
