Beit Haverim is an open, inviting, and spiritually alive Jewish community, located just outside of Portland, Oregon in Lake Oswego. We welcome everyone to our Reform congregation of Jews by birth, Jews by choice and Jews at heart.
Beit Haverim Inaugurates New Adult Jewish Studies Programs Prayerbook and Biblical Hebrew For Beginners A Course in Six Sessions Taught by Sami Oberlander Tuesday Evenings from 6:30PM to 8:00PM starting August 25 Most Jewish experiences, from worship to Bible Study to Shabbat and Holy Day observances, offer greater depth and religious wisdom with Hebrew reading skills and knowledge of the Hebrew language. With this in mind, Beit Haverim is pleased to offer to our members and the larger community a six session beginners’ Hebrew course taught by our master Hebrew teacher, Sami Oberlander. Many of us wondered if we could learn to read Hebrew. Sami has had a positive impact on a generation of students, adults and children. This is the course for you. The six dates for the classes are August 25, September 1, 8, 29, and October 6 and 13. This period encompasses the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The cost for the course for Beit Haverim members is $36 and nonmembers are requested to contribute $72. This includes all materials for the course. If you would like to be added to the temple e-mail notification list for Jewish Studies updates, including new courses and programs, please send a request to our office.

Mazel Tov Great Job Religious School! In our June newsletter we told you about the Religious School donating their tzedakah to several charities/agencies.. We received thank you letters from all the agencies to whom we donated. We will be on the “Roll of Honor that the Federation publishes to honor all who donate. From the Robison Jewish Heath Center (Cedar Sinai), Many of the elders who live at Robison Jewish Health Center are grandparents and were so excited to hear that the religious school students at Beit Haverim care deeply about them. You have brought large smiles to the residents; they are grateful, appreciative, and thrilled.” From Jewish Family and Child Services, “Your donation to JFCS creates a safety net for the individuals and families converting obstacles into opportunities, hopelessness into hopefulness, isolation into connection with family and community.” From the Anti Defamation League “After 100 years, ADL continues its long tradition of combating ant-Semitism and all forms of hatred and intolerance. Your contribution is crucial to our mission of ensuring fair and just treatment for all.” To recap, here’s what we donated:
Jewish Family and Child Services—$265.73 Jewish Federation of Portland—$132.86 Anti Defamation League$101.24 PJ Library-$82.25 Cedar Sinai Park—$50.63 For a total of $632.71. Thanks to our teachers and our parents for helping to instill the meaning of giving to our community. Letters we received thanking us for the donation
Great job, everyone. Our tzedakah really does make a difference! Keep up the giving! July, 2015

Beit Haverim Cookbook Order your copy of Bubbe and Zayde Cook. All recipes are from members of Beit Haverim. All tested by families and well loved. We are very excited with the results and can’t wait to try all the fabulous recipes. These will make great gifts and wonderful addition to anyone’s cookbook collection. They are $15 each. Please use this link to place your order.
Beit Haverim Children’s Library At one of the Congregational Desserts, parents of young children asked about a Children's Library that could be accessed during services, for restless children, or on Sundays when older siblings are in class. What a great idea! We are asking for "gently loved" Jewish book for children of preschool age through 4/5 grade. (Outgrown books from PJ library are a wonderful source). Also, if you have a small bookcase that you are no longer using, please consider donating it to the library. One with wheels (or wheels could be added) would be most appreciated. A box labeled "Beit Haverim Children Library" will be in the lobby to collect donations. For more information, please contact Sue Greenspan.

Tikkun Olam Tikkun Olam is working on one big project that will go on from now until the end of summer, and we need YOUR help. We are collecting school supplies that will be given to schools that do not have the means to provide all that the students need. More from Tikkun Olam We have made a great start with our school supplies collection. For the month of July, let's focus on backpacks, calculators and pocket dictionaries and thesauruses. Of course, other needed school supplies are always welcome. We are already planning our annual food drive to be held over the High Holidays. We'll let you know what the pressing needs are as time comes closer. Tikkun Olam has begun working with LOUCC on an outstanding and timely program to be held in October. Given recent events in America, it seems more urgent than ever to become aware of African American issues. Please be alert to publicity that will start soon concerning this program to be held on Sunday, October 11th at Bet Haverim. More information will be forthcoing. Finally, our ongoing projects are well...ongoing! Knitters, please keep knitting those scarves and hats to be donated at Christmas time. And parents of young men, we still want to collect your boys' outgrown dress clothes for our Bar Mitzvah closet.
Tributes & Memorials In honor of
Thank you to Barbara Gold for your donation in honor of the Confirmation Students
Thank you to Barbara Gold for your donation in honor of the bar mitzvah of Zack Friedman
Donations At Beit Haverim we are often asked the question, “How much does the Rabbi (Temple) charge for officiating at a life cycle event (baby naming, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, or funeral)? The answer is, “The Rabbi charges nothing.” The Rabbi officiating at these events is just one of the many privileges of membership at Beit Haverim. However, it is a tradition to make a donation to one of the many funds we have established at Beit Haverim in honor of your event. A congregation does not survive on dues alone. It is through your generous donations that many of our programs are able to function. The next time you are called to the Bima to say an Aliyah, dress the Torah, carry the Torah through the congregation, remember it is an honor. Do a Mitzvah and make a donation to the fund of your choice. Click here to make your online donation! Thank you!
