Beit Haverim is an open, inviting, and spiritually alive Jewish community, located just outside of Portland, Oregon in Lake Oswego. We welcome everyone to our Reform congregation of Jews by birth, Jews by choice and Jews at heart.

FROM Rabbi Alan Berg

The Sound of Music at Beit Haverim and Judith Kleinstein Our friend Judith Kleinstein has established a fund with a wonderful gift to assure the temple that our High Holiday music program will flourish. This legacy means that we will have a happy choir, copies of music, an accompanist and other enrichments that, frankly, from year to year, have been iffy. As I am writing this, suddenly I hear Judith singing this letter. Let me explain: One year our temple choir, so gloriously led by Allan Kalik, presents a service entirely sung; wherein, like an operatic, jazzy recitative, Judith sings the weekly announcements! Often this is met with applause. We also love it when, bringing us an entirely more profound side of faith, Judith, at the High Holidays, at our annual High Holyday MemorialCemetery service and at yizkor on Yom Kippur chants the beautiful El Male’ Rachamim. Judith lives a life of mitzvoth, and she is an adventuresome person. She is, as we know, heroic. This unique gift will help so many members of temple find deeper faith during the Days of Awe. B’shalom, Rabbi Alan Berg

Letter From Our President, Alan Cohen Announcing The Beit Haverim Sherman Family Building Fund I am very pleased to announce that our congregation has received a donation from our treasured members Ed and Martha Sherman in the amount of $50,000. This visionary gift which will be used to create a new dedicated building fund: The Beit Haverim Sherman Family Building Fund. This fund really gives Beit Haverim a lot of possibilities going forward in terms of who we are, and as important, where we are. While I believe that presently our current model of sharing space with LOUCC works very well for us, I know that in my ten years as a member of this congregation that having our own space has always been in the background. While I don't anticipate that anything is going to change in the immediate future, this gift gives the Board of Trustees a solid foundation to explore all of our possibilities. Before this generous gift, it was almost a remote dream to think about having a place of our own. This brings us a huge step closer to that possibility It is my hope that this gift is a catalyst and with other contributions, the journey to a more established presence, whatever that might be, will become a reality. My sincere thanks to the Sherman family for giving us this remarkable opportunity, and for your positive sense of community The weather got the best of us in February, and we have rescheduled two very important events that are coming up. The first is our collaboration with LOUCC to present Open Hearts, Open Minds. Please attend and support this effort. That is this Sunday, March 2nd. Rabbi Berg will be a featured speaker, and we'll have music, food, and friendship. The second rescheduled event is our March 7th Family Night Shabbat Service and Potluck, which features our K/1 and 2/3 religious school classes. The potluck starts at 6pm. Something to mark your calendar for right now is a Spring Fundraiser Event on Saturday, June 7th. All of the details are still being worked out, but there will be a basket theme with many great prizes to bid on or win. Looks for details in the coming weeks. Some of these baskets look amazing! Another event I want to highlight is Crossing Over, A Musical Haggadah on Saturday, April 5th. Tickets are available, and at a discount if you attend with Beit Haverim. I've heard a pre-show dinner is planned, so please plan on attending this event with your Beit Haverim family. Finally, my congratulations to Naomi Angier, who has been selected as your 2014 Beit Haverim Song of Miriam honoree. There will be a brunch in June at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center, further information will be put in the weekly eblasts and monthly newsletter. Until next month, Alan Cohen March, 2014

Get Involved! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Are you are a Web Designer / Web Developer with experience in Joomla CMS? Beit Haverim is seeking an experienced individual to volunteer as an assistant to administering and managing our custom designed Joomla web site. Interested? Contact Michelle Bombet Minch

CAN YOU HELP SOMEONE IN NEED? A former member of Beit Haverim is requesting help for a friend who is medically and financially challenged. The assistance they are needing is to move donated household goods from the Community Warehouse in Portland or Tualitin to an apartment at NE 166th and Glisan on March 9th at 10 am. They are hoping to find someone with an available truck and a couple of folks willing to help carry the goods. The specifics will be given if you contact Ira Steinberg at 503-655-1143 or by email at iscpa@comcast.net

CLOTHING DRIVE Time to start thinking about switching out your winter duds for spring. We are sponsoring a clothing drive for the Clackamas County Clothes Closet. It is an organization that depends strictly on donations. Low income school children can go there twice a year and "shop/pick out" clothes they can wear to school. Any gently used or new clothes can be donated. Under-garments need to be new but everything else can be used. It is a great cause and the needs just keeps increasing.

We will have a bin at Beit Haverim set up for you to drop off your items starting April 1st. The kids range from kindergarten through seniors in high school, so pretty much any size works!

PURIM CARNIVAL NEEDS YOUR HELP! We are looking for bakers, sweet lovers and shoppers to donate a dozen cupcakes for the Cupcake Walk at the Purim Carnival. This is one of the most popular games of the carnival, as the kids are hoping to stop on a lucky number and win a treat! We are looking for volunteers to work in carnival booths for 30 minutes to 1 hour. There is a job for everyone...darts, basketball, fishing, prizes, crafts and more. Please contact Heather Kirkbride if you are able to donate or to help out. March, 2014
