SOME HISTORY... • Between 1650 and the nineteenth century, the Scheldt remained closed to traffic and the metropolis became a provincial town. • 1795-1814 During the French occupation: the begin-ning of a modern port, but also the French plunder.o 1800 Antwerp had reached the lowest point of its fortunes, and its population had sunk under 40000. • 1830: Belgian Revolution. During two years the town was bombarded and at the end of 1832 the citadel itself was besieged by a French army. During this attack the town was further damaged. • Since 1863(the port was reopened) to nowadays the city has been growing, except during the two world wars. OUR PLOT APPEARS IN THAT PERIOD • After the war started the rebuilt of the city.
IN THE 20TH CENTURY -transport • In the last centuries The development of the transport sector was dominated by the growth of the harbor. • In the 30s a breakthrough occurred when the Tramways d’ Anvers were allowed to use the suburban network. This is a wonderful example of the ties that existed between the city and its suburbs within the structure of the conurbation. -suburbanization • There were new social housing policies and a wide spread of the concept of a garden city. • There was an architectural and historical value of the existing buildings in th e historical centre, so it became really expensive living there. • Massive constructions of new homes in the 20s o In 1919 the government created the National Organisation of Cheap Housing and Living Areas, as there was a tendency to stimulate a “healthy” living building. o That was something very difficult for Antwerp as it was not quite applicable to a city with already high building density o In the 19th century the solution was inspired by the Parisian housing with 6 or 7 storey buildings, constructed around a communal court yard. o There were also some large-scale projects also within the city’s outer walls. • 20s social housing policy was dominated by the garden cities. o The suburbs were a prime location for these garden cities, with their typical cottages and playgrounds. Problems: distance from the city, poor accessibility and public transport and little local equipment were disadvantages which applied to nearly all of the garden cities. o No real garden cities, as there were none of the essential facilities like proper shopping areas.

PUBLIC SPACE The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen introduced the distintion of public and private domain based in three aspects: OWNERSHIP Spaces that under the possession and management of government ACCESSIBILITY Public space is accessible to all at every moment of the day PURPOSE It has a collective purpose, it serves to the public interest SOCIAL SPACE It is a is physical or virtual space such as a social center, Facebook, or other gathering place where people gather and interact COLLECTIVE SPACE Manuel Solá-Morales: ‘The Wealth of the city lies sin its collectives spaces, i alll the places where everyday life takes place, is manifested, is remembered’ There are different kinds of collective spaces. It could be private plots with a public domain, or private spaces that have been collectivised and act as a substitude of the neighborhood, or even they could be intermediate size places thatjoint the private space within the public space

ALEJANDRA RUANO CAMPOS BELEN GOMEZ LLOBELL The project features a mixture of elements (infrastructure, public works and vehicular access ramps). It is characterized by its minimalist design and distribution of alleys and other spaces. GLC's acts in Camden Town, Pimlico, etc... The most characteristic feature of the project may be the separation of traffic at different levels crossed, handling the steep slopes (1419%), and the diversification of housing. These are designed from a basic (casas of quart i mig, helix). The facades have a unique design (single window), seeking intimacy (4 to 6 dwellings step, with volumes of low height and interior courtyards of service), while its streets are open to courtesy.

CONCEPT PROPOSAL
ALEJANDRA RUANO CAMPOS BELEN GOMEZ LLOBELL
Taking Utzon’s project in Fredensborg, as well as his Kingo Houses, as two succeeding references, the curling shaped proposal tries to open up courtyards in a continuos arrangement, and in this way never creating a rigid barrier from its surrounding context. In actual fact, this curling structure makes an indirect but, simultaneously, an intimate transition between the existing urban fabric and the plan proposed. The decision of this flexible shape also arises from the fact that the site is very narrow, therefore in this way we create a high density plan free from a fixed and strict pattern. Furthermore, this layout suggests a possible zoning of each of these collective spaces, giving each courtyard a unique identity depending on its position and lacking needs of the area. The string of dwelling blocks, connected and continuous, follows the contours of the undulating design. Being flexibility a major aspect in our project, each dwelling typology also follows this concept, creating diverse plans in order to give an interesting external appearance.

The simple steel structure gives the advantageous facility of constructing it in little time, as well as the prefabricated facades which only need to be placed in position in situ. The precast concrete slabs are fixed to the steel framing via stud-shear connectors, and the steel walkways are attached to this structure through metallic cables joined to the steel beams.

The covered walkways and balconies extend the living spaces to various orientations, giving the possibility to choose. Basically, there are two types of facades with two different materials: the wooden facade is orientated towards the outside (the context) as this material blends well with the surrounding buildings, and the aluminum elevation faces the inside of the courtyard, always connected to the steel staircases and walkways. Additionally, as the facades are quite fully glazed, the walkways serve as awnings, providing the necessary privacy and sun screening. This is done in the exterior facade with the wooden horizontal plates which create a sun filter in each of the integrated patios of every dwelling. Operable windows allow for natural ventilation and air circulates fast considering the size of each house (12m x 12m).

The building is formed by two residential towers, off-set from each other, and so never positioned in an exact same way to each other. This scheme maximizes the incidence of natural lighting, as well as the amount of external space afforded to its residents. The access to both levels of these prefabricated dwellings is via external steel staircases and covered galleries, as well as an incorporated lightweight glazed elevator at each side of the staircase. The towers are also linked by steel bridges supporting extensive planting, giving a joyful and pleasant image as well as providing further communication zones. We have to recall that two of the essential requirements given by the people of Antwerp in our surveys were the needed green areas and a collective plan in which the relationships between neighbors was one of the principle aspects, as this is their custom way of living.

WHAT ARE THE RULES THAT THE COLLECTIVE SPACE FOLLOWS?
SPACE HIERARCHY The blocks are raised above the ground in most cases, providing space for a prominent ground floor which is the social principle of our project. This community-based plan creates and encourages outdoor activities and communal gatherings. The ground floor will provide services to all the citizens of Antwerp and the voids to the neighborhood. The blocks missing this ground floor create linked visual connections throughout the whole layout, following a designed pathway, as well as continuing the principal existing streets of the urban fabric.
