Por supuesto que todos -o casi todos- coleccionamos bichos alguna vez de chicos, algún escarabajo y algún alacrán atrapado en el patio de la abuela, pero el pequeño Rolf Blomberg llevaba esto en las profundidades de su alma; su devoción por los bichos estaba marcada por esa ilusión única de saber lo que se quiere hacer en la vida desde muy temprana edad y apuntar todos los sentidos en esa dirección.

Of course, all of us -or almost all of us- collected insects at a certain time as children: a beetle or some scorpion trapped in our grandmothers patio, but young Rolf Blomberg carried this in the depth of his soul; his devotion for the bugs was marked by that unique illusion of knowing what one wants to do in life at a very early age and point towards that direction with all your senses.

Los escandinavos son gente feliz. Alegre. Tal vez porque aprendieron a lidiar con la oscuridad y el frío. Reciben el sol de forma diferente. Muy personal.

Su entorno natural es también muy alegre. Luminoso. Dice cosas en formas susurradas y profundas, cuando menos distintas a otras naturalezas cercanas al trópico, más caprichosas, enrevesadas.

Para los escandinavos la naturaleza es como un pariente cercano: no solo se le visita con frecuencia, se le quiere muy cerca. El cine sueco, por ejemplo, fue el primero en considerar a los paisajes y el contexto natural como parte indispensable de la narrativa cinematográfica. En el teatro realista nórdico, Ibsen y Strindberg situaban los bosques y alomados en sus dramaturgias con una personalidad influyente, casi determinante. Por su lado, Grieg y Sibelius, componían su música como un manto que se despliega sobre grandes sabanas y acantilados, sacudido por el viento y con olor a ramas secas traídas del pasado.

Así son los escandinavos.

Unos bichos raros.

Y en Suecia vino a nacer un bicho muy raro. Tan raro era de niño que coleccionaba bichos.

Cientos de bichos. Miles de bichos. En frascos, latas, latitas, tapitas, tapas de olla, periódicos, floreros, la vajilla de la abuela, el zapato del padre, alguna peluca.

Los bichos se escapaban y aparecían en la ducha, en la almohada o en la olla para hervir las verduras. Los bichos y su pequeño universo sembrado en todas partes marcando el ritmo de la familia humana.

Los bosques aledaños a la casa de la familia Blomberg aportaban una micro fauna que podía satisfacer en poco tiempo la curiosidad de un aficionado menor pero no la de un colector tan sistemático como voraz. Toda clase de mariposas, escarabajos, gusanos, grillos, orugas, ciempiés, cigarras, lagartijas, roedores y pequeños ofidios, eran atrapados con mesura e inmediatamente clasificados en géneros, familias, especies y variedades con la

Scandinavians are happy people.

Joyful. Maybe because they learned to deal with darkness and coldness. They receive the sun in a different way. Very personal.

Their natural environment is also very happy. Bright. It says things in whispered and profound ways, at least different to other natural worlds closer to the tropics, more whimsical and confusing.

For the Scandinavians, Nature is like a close relative: not only do you visit him often, you want to keep him close. Swedish film making, for example, was the first to consider the scenery and the natural context as an indispensable part of the cinematographic narrative. In the Nordic realistic theater, Ibsen and Strindberg would place the plains and woods into their dramaturgies almost as an influential character, almost determinant. On their part, Greig and Sibelius composed their music as a mantle that stretches over extensive plains and cliffs, shaken by the wind and the smell of dry branches brought from the past.

That is the way Scandinavians are. Weird specimens.

And Sweden gave birth to a very weird specimen. This child was so weird that he collected hundreds of bugs. Thousands of them. In jars, cans, small cans, lids, small lids, pot lids, newspapers, flower vases, grandmas tableware, his father’s shoe, some wig. En 1925, con 14 años de edad, Blomberg realiza pequeños viajes en bicicleta con un compañero de su escuela. Recorren Suecia y conocen gente. Producto de este viaje es un diario, un cuadernillo con imágenes llamado “Relatos”. Éste se convierte en el inicio de muchos viajes más, cada vez a lugares más lejanos y con verdaderos libros de crónicas de viaje.

In 1925, at age 14, Blomberg makes small bicycle trips with a classmate. They tour Sweden and meet people. A product of this trip is a diary, a small notebook with photos called “Tales“.

This becomes the beginning of many more travels, each time to places farther away and with real books of travel chronicles.

At the same time Blomberg devoured naturalist books that spurred his imagination and his desire to conquer mountains and seas in all directions. At the first opportunity he had, he got on his bicycle and made small explorations beyond his county and his province towards the Baltic Sea. The most important aspect of these small trips came with the seed of his chronicler spirit, his need to register his impressions

with words and drawings, on copiously illustrated travel diaries, with anecdotes and details that anyone else would miss but to him would mean the beginning of a very particular imprint .With time his imprint would mature into an entertaining style without being obliging, and above all accessible to very heterogeneous readers: an editorial spirit that would accompany him till the end. He arrived on Carnival of 1934, on his way to the Galapagos Islands.

It was his first encounter with the tropics and it left him with a life long fascination.

Siempre fue muy osado y se salvó de muchos accidentes, a pesar de viajar a lugares de muy difícil acceso. Uno de sus pocos percances fue un accidente de automóvil en la ciudad de Guayaquil, 1934.

He was always very bold and saved himself from many accidents, even though he travelled to many unexplored places with highly difficult access. One of his few mishaps was a car accident in the city of Guayaquil, 1934.

En los 5 años posteriores a 1947, a su regreso al Ecuador después de 10 años, Blomberg debió recorrer la mayor parte de su territorio en más de dos docenas de viajes. Desde la Costa, subiendo a la Sierra y extendiéndose hasta a la Amazonía. Una y otra vez, de norte a sur, en burro, caballo, canoa, camión, avioneta, a pie y hasta dormido.

La palma de la mano de Blomberg debió haber sido, por esos años, la copia más fiel de este mapa.

In the 5 years following 1947, upon his return to Ecuador after 10 years, Blomberg must have travelled most part of its territories on more than two dozen trips. From the Coast, climbing up to the highlands and stretching to the Amazon region.

Again and again, from north to south, on a donkey, horse, canoe, truck, small plane, by foot and even asleep.

The palm of Blomberg’s hand must have been, in those years, the most faithful copy of this map.

Las Islas Galápagos fueron el destino soñado por Rolf Blomberg. En 1934 lo pudo realizar permaneciendo en estas durante 9 meses. Pudo conocer a sus habitantes nórdicos así como compartir sus playas con leones marinos y otras especies en las islas desiertas. Durante su vida las Islas Galápagos fueron uno de sus destinos favoritos a los que retornaba regularmente.

The Galapagos Islands were the dreamed journey destination for Rolf Blomberg. In 1934 he was able to fulfill his effort. He remained there for 9 months getting to know its Nordic inhabitants as well as sharing beaches with sea lions and other species on the deserted islands. All through his life the Galapagos Islands remained as one of his favorite destinations where he would often return.

He kept travel diaries. They would be filled with details such as the addresses of important people, dictionaries of basic vocabulary in different languages.

It is usual to find different plants with their common and scientific name as well as their use.

These dairies were the base for his books and articles.

Con el río Napo como arteria principal, Blomberg fue en canoa hacia el territorio de los cazadores de cabezas, los Shuar, un grupo selvático entonces todavía con un sistema social no sedentario lo que les volvía una nación atravesada de conflictos intestinos muy complejos.

With the Napo river as the main artery, Blomberg went in a canoe to the head hunters territory, the Shuar, a jungle group that still had a non sedentary social system made then a nation bisected by internal complex conflicts

Las regalías por el reportaje de la Baronesa Wagner le permitieron elaborar un plan de regreso aún más descabellado, al plantearse volver a Suecia siguiendo la ruta de Francisco de Orellana, es decir, subir a la sierra andina y luego bajar a la selva para, a través del río Napo y luego el Amazonas, cruzar Sudamérica y por último surcar el Atlántico.

Así fue que en 1935 Rolf Blomberg llegó por primera vez a la ciudad de Quito. Hizo el trayecto en ferrocarril desde la estación de Durán en la Costa hasta Riobamba y en bus a través de los

páramos andinos. Para entonces la capital del Ecuador ya se había acostumbrado a la llegada de muchos gringos. La mayoría de ellos estuvieron siempre de paso, como una escala obligada en su trayecto hacia la costa o hacia el oriente.

Era un pueblo guerrero en toda regla. El símbolo universal de la hostilidad ritual que les caracterizaba, será para siempre la tzantza, la cabeza reducida del enemigo convertida en trofeo de guerra para conjurar los espíritus de venganza.

The royalties for his reportage on the Baroness Wagner allowed him to elaborate an even wilder return plan, he set up his return to Sweden following Francisco de Orellana’s route, which meant, climbing to the highlands and then descending to the jungle, through the Napo river and then the Amazon river crossing all of South America and finally sail the Atlantic.

This is how Rolf Blomberg arrived for the first time to Quito in 1935. He made the trip by train from the coastal station of Duran up to Riobamba and then by

bus through the Andean moor.

By then the capital of Ecuador had gotten used to the arrival of many gringos. Most of them were passing through, as an obliged stop over on their way to the coast or the jungle.

It was a warrior nation with very particular ways of confronting and solving their warlike conflicts. The universal symbol of the ritual hostility that characterized them will always be the tzantza, the reduced head of the enemy converted trophy to conjure the spirits of revenge.

SOUTHERN SEAS

MARES DEL SUR

En 1939 Rolf Blomberg decide viajar a otros trópicos, ahora lo atraen los Mares del Sur y realiza una larga expedición a Borneo.

Se casa con la sueca Karin (Kajsa) Abdon en Agosto de 1940 y retorna a las Islas de Indonesia para viajes mas largos. Se inicia la Segunda Guerra Mundial y con la invasión japonesa su movilidad se restringe. Permanece allí hasta el final de la guerra.

In 1939 Rolf Blomberg decides to travel to different tropics, he is now attracted to the Southern Seas and makes a long expedition to Borneo.

He marries Karin Abdon in August 1940 and returns for a longer trip to the Indonesian islands. The Second World War breaks out and with the Japanese invasion his mobility is highly restricted. He stayed there until the end of the war.

Bufo blombergi is the world largest toad, discovered to science by Blomberg in Colombia in 1952.

He used to say that men seek to immortalize their name and that discovering the world’s largest toad was a perfectly good way to do so.
