t’s life, Jim, but not as we know it! While we’re all adjusting to this strange new season, it’s been a tonic to work on this edition of Family Life and our hope is that you’ll find something to cheer you. We may be restricted and cooped up indoors more than we could ever have anticipated, but it’s a precious time for building relationships in the family, getting the house in order and making plans for the day when all this is behind us. We have lots of tips for cleaning the house thoroughly and it’s likely that our homes will never have looked better than they will by the summer. We may not be able to buy much for our homes this season but there’s a lot to be said for looking at pretty pictures. Beautiful things have been proven to reduce stress levels and that’s what we’ve aimed for. We also look at ways to help children get through lengthy periods indoors as well as tips for keeping your own sanity. There’s nothing quite like a new addition to the family to instil optimism and we are delighted to include a section for hopeful and expectant parents like Debby and Dan whose son is due in July. Debby talks about her excitement at the prospect of growing as a little family.

Once the good weather comes in, it will be easier to spend more time outdoors and we have lots of ideas for getting your garden into shape and creating a comfortable environment, whether you want to dine outside or keep an eye on the children. We’re looking forward to lots of dry days for barbecues and evenings making s’mores around a fire. It’s important to keep active and healthy and it’s not as hard as you might think. Having daily exercise classes in the house and dance offs will take the edge off being cooped up should we end up in a lockdown. There’s nothing like a crisis to help people pull together and it’s been heartening to hear the stories of communities rallying round and supporting each other. Who knows, once the pandemic has ended, our world could well be a better, more caring place. Stay safe and God bless. * This magazine is being printed at a time when the situation is rapidly changing. We hope you’ll appreciate that some of our clients may not be operating in the advertised way by the time Family Life is published. If so, please give them your business when life gets back to normal as we all hope it soon will.

or many families, the prospect of being cooped up together for any length of time is enough to get the blood pressure soaring. The same is true for anyone expecting to spend time confined alone. Good weather will make a difference, especially if you have a decent sized garden to escape into. There are lots of things you can do to manage your physical and mental wellbeing. Here are some expert tips for getting through it: Reach out to people you haven’t heard from in a while. Don’t feel obligated to over-connect either. We all need some alone time, so make sure, especially if you are cooped up, to take time away from others to recharge and reflect.

Keep reasonable routines and schedule activities. A balance of structure and flexibility is key. Identify projects to work on, pick things which are purposeful and pace yourself so you don’t finish too soon. Keep a calendar and follow it, 7 days a week. Resist the urge to enter into a timeless void.

3

Take care of your body by exercising daily. Even if only a few minutes a day, develop a little habit and build on it. Maintain a regular sleep schedule, avoiding excessive daytime napping.

4

Make healthy, sustainable food choices. Leave room for treats, but make the staple of your diet nutritious and use this

time to limit unhealthy habits.

“Bathe daily and maintain grooming and hygiene. Whether working from home or not, keeping up basic practices of self-care has been proven to sustain resilience, providing a sense of self-efficacy, reinforcing self-respect, and serving as a good role model for others,” writes psychiatrist Dr Grant Hilary Brenner. Your mind also needs daily exercise. Avoid too much time on the internet or binge watching shows. Follow the news and credible public health authorities without overdosing on distressing material. Focus on flourishing, but don’t pressure yourself.

Make the most out of family time. Bake, do puzzles, play games, make art, go outside together with safe practices, and grow closer. It is a time for couples to grow together, facing adversity, and using some of that extra time for the relationship.

8

Parents should plan their approach together before speaking with kids to make sure they have a unified voice. Plan and deliver accurate and targeted messaging, sharing quality information without excessively activating anxiety. Address emotions in an age-appropriate way.

9

Relax, turn off your mind, and float downstream. Meditation has been shown to have numerous mental, emotional and physical benefits, fundamentally improving brain function. Adapted from a blogpost by Dr Grant Hilary Brenner, Psychology Today.

Start a project that will last a while. Image by Tatiana Syrikova from Pexels

Avoid common pitfalls:

Don’t make mountains out of molehills. ✱ Psychologists call this ‘catastrophizing’. Pay attention to what is important, but

use common sense in keeping things in perspective. Look for positive stories to offset the negative. The rule of thumb is to have at least three positives for every negative. People are more resilient than we realise. Remember how you’ve got through past adversity, apply lessons learned here, and research what works. Make it your goal to bring your ‘A’ game. Laughter is the best medicine. While too much dark humour can have a corrosive effect, a bit of gallows humor is healthy. Humour has been shown to be good for your health, and laughter is good physically and emotionally. Watch shows which make you

laugh, listen to comedy and play games together which amuse. Remind yourself that obsessing is a symptom related to anxiety. Direct yourself toward best practices, for example washing your hands for 20 seconds as recommended — not out of excess anxiety. Focus on day-to-day and living in the moment. Thinking too much about the future takes us away from things we can have control over, and can worsen anxiety by increasing uncertainty. Keep up your healthcare. If you see a therapist or need medical care, don’t let that slide. Clinicians and hospitals are offering telemedicine services. Of course, if you feel ill or are experiencing an emergency, seek help immediately.

A good belly laugh is just what Dr Grant Hilary Brenner ordered. Image by Polina Tankilevitch from Pexels

he first gym Daniel Mccorvie put a foot in was an old school gym in Edenderry Mill, Belfast. Just 16 years later he is back and proud owner of a gym in exactly the same building his dad took him to. Daniel says it’s in his blood: “I was meant to do this. It’s what makes us one of the best studios in Northern Ireland. All our personal trainers have similar stories.

Daniel Mccorvie, of DMC FIT PTstudio

All our PTs are highly educated, some with degrees in other areas, but they chose to do this and that’s why our results are amazing.” His hourly rate when he first became a personal trainer was £3.70 per hour. He remembers his embarrassment at not being able to afford a pair of trainers he wanted. “At stages I was paying to work, between petrol money and uniform.” With a degree in Biomedical Science Daniel could be working in a lab, doing a ‘normal’ job. “The truth is, this is my passion and it’s true passion that makes us different.” The DMC FIT GYM and personal training studio is created around the tagline – ‘No mirrors, no egos’. “To me it’s always been important to create a hugely welcoming atmosphere,” Daniel explains. “To create that we had to change the dynamic of what would be a typical gym set up.” The lack of mirrors is to deter posers. “There’s nothing worse than someone more in love with themselves than the actual process of working out. I’ve tried to create an atmosphere where everyone is there for one goal – to progress, not show off. That’s also why it was so important to now have the gym open to public use. We have zero gym members or gym membership charges. “Everyone here will be with their

personal trainers so there won’t be people staring at you. Hopefully we are doing something right, and by the quick expansion I do feel like we are onto a great thing.” DMC FIT PTstudio offers a choice of six, eight or 12 week transformations at an affordable price. “The majority of our clients stay well past their first six week block,” says Daniel. “We do full measurements so you’ll know each six weeks how many inches you’ve dropped. We include diet plans and have weekly weigh-ins if your goal is weight loss. “Our results are some of the best in Belfast, our clients’ before and after photos are amazing and we couldn’t be prouder of every single one of them.” Check them out on the gym’s Facebook page: DMC FIT PTstudio or email Danielmccorvie@live.co.uk.

Forget this: Sit at a desk or table on a proper chair. Keep work away from places you associate with relaxation

Howtomakeworking fromhomeworkforyou… BY FIONA RUTHERFORD

H

uge numbers of us are having to adjust to working from home for the time being. While it can be difficult to do, especially if you don’t have much space, there’s a lot to be said for it. You don’t have to worry about how you look or what to wear. Your make-up will last so much longer with not being needed every day. Forget commuting or getting up extra early to be ready for the day. Working from home means an extra hour in bed and a much more relaxed vibe. I’ve been working this way for a couple of years now and would hate to go back to being in the office full time. Here’s what I find works...

1

Even though you can be more relaxed, do get fully dressed when you get up in the morning, have your breakfast and then sit down to work as normal. It helps get your brain in gear for the tasks ahead.

2

Create a zone that is set aside purely for work. We didn’t have space for me

to take over a room so I work in a corner of the dining room. Keeping the doors closed and putting my music on quietly stops any distractions.

3

Don’t be tempted to work in bed or sitting on the sofa or the floor. If you’re going to be able to perform over a whole day, you need to be in a space that you

don’t associate with downtime. Have your desk facing a wall rather than a window so you aren’t constantly distracted. You can listen to the birds and watch the flowers grow on your break times.

4

It’s lovely to be able to do bits and pieces of housework or prepping meals during the day but confine yourself to doing them

Do this: An uncluttered workspace facing a wall is ideal

during office break times and lunch hour. That mental separation of work and home is crucial to being productive.

5

While it’s tempting to keep checking for news updates on the current crisis – don’t. Before you know it, you’ll be stressed out and feeling guilty about not getting your work done which in turn will make you more stressed.

6

If having young children makes it impossible to get a steady run at work, talk to your employer about working mornings and evenings with afternoons off or whatever is required to help you deal with the domestic situation.

7

Do keep the normal levels of contact with work. If you need to pop out or if you have an appointment, keep them in the loop. It keeps things more professional and helps maintain their trust in you.

8

A basic rule of thumb is, ‘If I would do it in the office, I can do it at home.’ That applies to personal calls, running messages and so on.

9

When the working day is over, it’s over. Don’t be tempted to linger on and let work encroach into family time.

While I can’t imagine trying to manage with very young children, my guess is whole sections of the workforce will be very reluctant to set that early morning alarm once this pandemic has passed.

Spring cleaning seasonis here

S

pring cleaning takes on new urgency this year with everyone doing their best to halt the spread of coronavirus. To do a thorough job, don’t rush straight in but work out a schedule for the house so that over the space of a few weeks you’ve covered every room. If your house isn’t tidy to start with you may feel overwhelmed early on so it’s important to take it at a manageable pace. Put on your favourite music, podcast or pick an audiobook and it becomes much less stressful. For everyday tasks throughout the house, add cleaning door handles, light switches, tables and hard backed chairs, taps and toilet flushes to your routine. Begin by decluttering room by room. If you have children at home, let them do their own decluttering. Make it fun by placing cardboard boxes on the floor for things to be given away and things to be thrown away and let them have some throwing target practice. Ex-teacher Anne

DAILY DUTY If someone in the household is self isolating because they are suspected or have Covid-19, cleaning and disinfecting those areas in the house that are frequently touched should be done daily. Cleaning with detergent removes most germs and disinfecting kills the rest. Use disposable gloves and bin them after each use. Use a bag rather than laundry basket to put an ill person’s laundry in and dispose after use.

Fresh, clean bedding in a spotless bedroom is irresistible, image by Volha Flaxeco on Unsplash says: “It depends on age but I found boys like to be useful. They often respond to being given a ‘job’ – preferably something they can expend a bit of energy on. It always depends on the individual and age but in my experience children like routine and they like being useful.” Once you have a workable canvas, start from the ceiling and give everything a good dusting, getting rid of any cobwebs.

Bathroom: Spray your cleaning product

onto the sink, toilet, bath, shower and tiles and leave it to work for a few minutes. Clear out shelves or cupboards and give them a wipe, including any doors. Throw shower curtains and bathmats into the washing machine then rehang the shower curtain to dry. Clean mirrors and the windows and frames. Wipe down the sink etc and give them a rinse. It goes without saying, use a different rag for cleaning around the toilet than other areas and

don’t forget to include the bottom of the pedestal, the back of it and the pipework if it’s exposed. Finally, brush and wash the floor and clean the door, including a quick swipe along the top.

Bedrooms: Strip the bed, including

valance sheets, and put everything in to wash. It’s a good idea to turn mattresses over every now and again. Sprinkle baking soda on a bare mattress and leave it for up to an hour, then vacuum it off. Clean the windows and if you can, wash the curtains and get them dried before night. Alternatively, run the vacuum cleaner over them. If the tops of wardrobes are very dusty, wipe them with a damp cloth. Don’t forget to dust or vacuum the ceiling corners and clean lampshades. If you can move drawers and beds without hurting your back, run the hoover or brush and mop into all those spaces that are normally concealed. A lick of polish will bring wooden surfaces up like new. Leave the window open for a few hours to air the room. You won’t be able to resist climbing into bed that night.

Kitchen: The visible parts of the kitchen are likely to be clean anyway. Spring cleaning involves emptying the fridge and clearing out anything that shouldn’t be in there and giving it a good clean. Cut a lemon in half, squeeze the juice into a small amount of water in a bowl, then drop the halves in and microwave on high for three minutes if your microwave is hard to clean. A quick wipe should remove any remaining mess. Clean the oven and line with oven liner. Clear out shelves and drawers. Line with paper or card once you’ve wiped them down to save on future cleaning. Don’t forget those ceiling corners and lights. Boys enjoy being given a job, preferably one that involves some exertion

Living room, dining room and hallway:

Wash cushion covers and throws as well as

When tidying out kitchen cupboards, check jars and bottles for expiry dates and get rid of anything that’s past its ‘use by’ date. ‘Best before’ dates are less stringent seat covers if they are removable. Remove seat cushions and vacuum thoroughly beneath them. Clean all lights and lampshades, use the appropriate polish for wood and metal surfaces and don’t forget the mirrors and windows. Pay special attention to surfaces that are touched a lot, such as TV remote controls and disinfect thoroughly. Following on the experience of people in China, if you have a porch and there’s create a space to leave coats, boots and shoes out there to reduce the risk of carrying the virus indoors.

ew occasions can match the birth of a new baby for sheer joy. Parents throughout time have been taken aback by the immense love they feel for this tiny infant, so familiar and yet so unknown to them. The preceeding months are equally precious as you follow each stage of this tiny life growing in the womb. From the

Debby Coyle at 21 weeks

first pregnancy test to the 12 week scan when the galloping heartbeat rings out through the examination room you may be swinging between sickness, exhaustion, disbelief and elation. That first scan can’t come quickly enough but once it does, everything seems to shift a gear. There’s the exciting news to share with family and friends and all sorts of adjustments to begin to make. By the 20 week scan, most couples will have decided whether they want to know the gender of the mini kickboxer within. Client services manager Debby and chef Dan, whose first baby is due at the end of July, couldn’t wait to find out they’re expecting a boy. “Basically I got too impatient and I thought it would help me to connect to my baby and allow me to visualise and dream of the future better and it’s definitely done that.” They haven’t gone so far as choosing a name yet though. “We have a list of names and we’re going to narrow it down to three and then pick one when he’s born.” In these surreal times, flexibility is key. “We’re planning a baby shower in June but it probably won’t happen. My friends are planning to organise a virtual baby shower

Debby and Dan if we can’t meet.” Their one bedroom apartment doesn’t leave space for a separate nursery. “We’re setting up baby in our bedroom. We have a Moses basket and some little bits to put on the wall to make a space for him.” This eco aware couple have also been pondering what sort of nappies they’ll use. “We’re planning to use reusable nappies at

home and have disposable for when we go out and about.” She hopes to breast feed. “I also want to express so Dan can help out with feeding. He wants to be involved.” Top of their shopping list is an Elvie breast pump. “It’s cordless and operates by an app with a massage function. You just stick it in your bra and carry on doing your normal tasks. We have quite a few friends who have said it’s hands down the best thing they have got.” Thoughts have also turned to the labour and Debby hopes she’ll be able to spend some of it in a birthing pool. For now though, she’s counting down the weeks and focussing on the end result. “I’m most looking forward to just spending time as a little family and connecting and all the challenges of getting used to being new parents – all of that together as a couple who are getting to know their little human.”

Calmosine –Natural Mother andBaby wellbeing

C

almosine is an exciting new range of natural products for mother and baby well-being. Made with natural plant extracts which offer gentle and natural solutions to efficiently relieve minor everyday ailments and help families regain serenity and peace of mind. It all started with Calmosine Digestion, which has been the main product used for digestive discomfort in France for over 20 years. Many children get gripey pains and trapped wind after feeding usually without a known cause, and it can be very distressing for both mum and baby when it first happens. Recommended by French midwives and paediatricians, Calmosine Digestion is a must have baby remedy for many parents. Calmosine Digestion is gentle and can be used from birth. It contains fennel which is a plant belonging to the umbelliferae family and has been used before meals for centuries to aid smooth and comfortable digestion. Lime Flower is a member of the tiliaceae family and is traditionally used in herbal teas due to its calming and soothing properties, particularly in the digestive tract. Orange Blossom is part of the rutaceae family, orange blossom is known for its delicate fragrance. Calmosine Digestion comes in 5ml doses and is to be taken before food up to six times in a day. Laudavie, the manufacturer of the Calmosine range then went back to its

parents to ask what other challenges they needed a solution for. Overwhelmingly the feedback was a need for a product to help children sleep or regain natural sleep patterns after a bout of illness or some other upset. In 2015 Calmosine Sleep was formulated with help from French sleep consultants. Calmosine Sleep is designed for children aged a year and older up to 14 years old. It is made with lemon balm, a plant belonging to the lamiaceae family and has also been used for centuries to soothe restlessness and irritability, to make it easier to fall asleep and to

improve sleep quality. Lemon verbena is a member of the verbenaceae family and helps restore regular sleep patterns thanks to its calming properties. Calmosine Sleep also contains orange blossom. Calmosine Sleep is effective in children who have trouble falling asleep and those who wake up frequently during the night. In a study of 70 children in 2016, 80% of parents felt that the product had a soothing effect on their child, with over 75% saying it improved their child’s sleep. 80% would recommend the product to a friend and 76% would purchase it again if they needed to. Calmosine Sleep is to be taken half an hour before bed. For children of 1-7 years, 1 sachet and for older children over 7 years old, 2 sachets either neat or mixed with water in milk. In 2017 we focussed on mum and Calmosine Breastfeeding was developed. It is a supplement to be drunk daily by mum in the first few weeks after birth to help with milk production, as well as tiredness, stress and anxiety, all common feelings experienced when having a new baby.

Calmosine Breastfeeding is formulated with Passiflora, a plant belonging to the passifloraceae family traditionally used to soothe, relax and alleviate stress. Passiflora helps to restore calm, reduce tension and feelings of irritability due to nervous fatigue. Fenugreek is a plant belonging to the fabaceae family which has long been known to improve lactation by helping to stimulate and maintain milk production. It has been used in certain cultures for many years for this purpose. Fenugreek also helps promote postnatal recovery. Dog Rose Hip is part of the rosaceae family, used to fight the effects of fatigue. The dog rose hip helps support everyday vitality. Biotin (Vitamin B8) contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and mucous membranes and last but not least, Magnesium helps to reduce tiredness and supports normal nervous system function. In a recent study of 60 mums who took Calmosine Breastfeeding for two weeks, 80% of them felt less tired, 78.3% felt they were producing more milk and 83.3% felt their mood had improved. 9 out of 10 would recommend the product to a friend. For Calmosine Breastfeeding, we recommend drinking two sachets a day mixed in a large glass of water or juice. This can be at two separate times or in a bottle to drink continuously throughout the day. All three products come in handy, predosed sachets. None of the Calmosine range contain sugars, alcohols or preservatives.

Extensive specialist tests are available, without waiting lists, to help couples and individuals understand if fertility treatment is suitable for them. Belfast Fertility has seen a recent increase in local altruistic donors who give the amazing gift of helping others have a family and are always seeking more egg and sperm donors. Belfast Fertility hosts free information evenings on a weekly basis for single people and couples who are thinking of starting fertility treatment or who may have had unsuccessful treatment elsewhere. Attendees have the opportunity to see the clinic and meet some of the team. There are also monthly information evenings specifically geared towards those within the LGBTQ+ community who are considering their options in starting a family. In addition, Belfast Fertility offers free personal tours for those who would rather explore their options on a one to one basis. Fertility treatment can be stressful and time consuming. In addition to offering three counselling sessions as part of its exceptional value packages, Belfast Fertility also has outreach clinics in Newry, Letterkenny, Ballykelly and Dublin where various services are offered in more convenient locations for patients undergoing treatment, including evening appointments in Newry. Timetoplan your next break

A

few short months ago, families across Northern Ireland would have thought nothing of hopping into the car and heading for a weekend in Donegal or the Causeway Coast. While the current crisis may have abated by Easter, it’s safe to say that it will be a while before we take such everyday excursions for granted again. And once life is restored to normal, the natural glories of old familiars may well bring a tear to the eye. For people living in the heart of the country, the sight and sounds of Atlantic rollers crashing ashore will be as exciting as the Med must have been to the holidaymakers who first flocked there in the mid 20th century. And for those fortunate enough to live along the coast, the Fermanagh Lakelands or the Sperrins will be even more stunning than we remembered; the lakes a deeper blue, the fields a richer green. While it might take us a while to get reacquainted with the delights of squeezing round a turf fire in a west coast pub as the musicians tune up for a trad session, no doubt in time we will. It may be hard to break the habit of keeping

friends and acquaintances at arm’s length and we may find we’re more comfortable spreading out around the table at the restaurant for the next while and no doubt hotels and restaurants will accommodate that. For now, whether it’s possible to get away at Easter, in the summer or beyond, why not work out your own list of places you’ll aim to visit as soon as possible. Here are ours, in no particular order…

Fun times…

I

t may soon be time to dig deep and come up with those rainy day games that kept kids entertained in the predigital era. While there’s lots of good stuff online, everybody needs a break from screen time every day. Here are some ideas for all the family: 1. Skipping is fantastic exercise and an excellent mood lifter for grown up kids too. 2. Pavement chalks are also handy and everyone can hone their skills outside and

create something different every day. 3. If you have old ends of wallpaper, get the kids to lie on them, trace around each other’s outline and then get to work with poster paints. They can do the whole family. 4. Newspaper, wallpaper paste, a balloon, loo roll cardboard and some white paper are the basics for making papier mache puppets. You can spend a morning layering the newspaper on to the ballon, followed by the plain top layer. The next day they

can give features to the dried faces and attach woollen hair and make costumes. Day three can see the first of many puppet performances. 5. Wreath making is fun and relaxing for all ages. Use ivy or wire as the frame, or make a square frame by tying bits of branch together and decorate with faux and fresh flowers from the garden, pine cones, shells, driftwood or whatever you have to hand. Use thin wire to attach each piece firmly. 6. Gather some small, smooth stones and get to work writing messages or painting pictures. 7. Card games are not just for rainy days in a caravan in Donegal. Make them competitive for teens by playing for chocolate or other treats. 8. A football net in the garden is usually enough to keep boys in particular happy for hours. They’ll enjoy it even more if dad is in nets. 9. Competitive children love to race. Set up markers and set them to doing laps. 10. Old style crafts have been making a comeback. This could be the perfect time to teach the kids embroidery, knitting, sewing or crochet or learning how to do it yourself. 11. Puzzles like crosswords, codewords and jigsaw puzzles are relaxing and good for keeping your brain ticking over. 12. Take a leaf out of the Little Women book and get the family involved in writing

This colour-in pillowcase is fun for arty kids who love the idea of customising their own space. They can draw on, design and personalise it with the enclosed set of 10 wash-out pens. Then, after a warm wash in the machine, the ink disappears, and it’s all ready to redecorate! Home Decorator Pillowcase, £14.95, eatsleepdoodle a play and performing it for yourselves or on Facetime with quarantined relatives. 13. If you weren’t in the habit of reading a bedtime story to your children, there’s no better time to start. Bedtime story and prayers are the perfect opportunity to answer any concerns and reassure them that everything is going to be all right.

O

nce the coast is clear and life resumes, the one item we’re most likely to step out in this spring and summer will be the dress. Maxi, midi or mini, take your pick. Go floaty and feminine, perhaps with a side slit to add allure. Get in touch with your most romantic feminine side with sheer organza or a mesh detail or layer. For anyone expecting a baby, the dress is a particular gift, for feeling feminine and keeping you cool on a hot day. If floaty sinks your boat, opt for a figure hugging funky striped body con number. Pair them with a knee or over the knee boot, an ankle boot, sneakers, sandals or loafers. Polka dots are also a hot pattern and can be big and bold or small and delicate. The ‘80s are influencing silhouettes with sculpted shapes, statement sleeves and shoulders and power suits. Utility wear is in too, from cargo style trousers to multi-pocketed, boxy jackets and dungarees. Pastels and especially pastel florals are perfect for spring and summer. Bright jewel shades of red, blue and green and white are uplifting and positive. Layer up with a gilet or waistcoat. Perfect for keeping you warm if the breeze turns chilly, they add interest to your outfit and hide any bulges. It can be long and tailored, faux fur or denim, but the waistcoat is one of the year’s must-haves. As far as fabrics go, denim is nothing if not enduring. For a fresh take on finishing touches, there’s lots of embroidery and broderie anglaise to chime with the folk and boho trends. Coloured soft leather, whether real or PU, is also grabbing attention, in everything from coats and trousers to dresses and skirts.

The first thing to do is exfoliate. Inclement conditions can cause a build-up on the skin of dead skin cells and toxins. Light microdermabrasion followed by a moisturising mask will keep skin smooth and hydrated. We love the Facial Exfoliator from Champneys Health Spa which gently polishes and evens tone. It also has a very purse-friendly cost. You’ll be dewy in no time! It’s time to lighten up and change your moisturiser. Swap rich formulas for lighter lotions. Oil-free moisturisers are best and even better if they contain sunscreen – a must to keep your skin from aging prematurely. As the days get longer and lighter, an eye cream is essential. Try to find one with antioxidants and peptides which work to fight off the damage from UVA rays. Here are our top 16 products to stock up on. SpringintoSummer withthesesumptuous beautytrends BY MAEVE RICHARDSON

W

et look lips are proving to be a massive SS2020 trend with designers from Gucci to Chanel and Louis Vuitton embracing glossy pouts steeped in shine on the runways. Graphic eyeliner is another huge trend, and no colour is off limits. From rainbow brights to pastels or neons - the sky is the limit. Classic cat eyeliner is as popular as ever but you can also break the rules and have a little fun with free-hand floating liner. A smokey eye and glittery metallics are still a go-to for a statement eye but shades of neon and pastel blues are a fantastic alternative for beauty addicts who want to make waves.

Vegan Beauty Xo Lip Vinyl, £19, KVD Combining bold pigment and a sexy vinyl shine finish in a creamy, comfortable and cushiony swipe – perfect for anyone looking for their new glossy lip go-to. Crushed Oil Infused Gloss in New Romantic, £19, Bobbi Brown A non-sticky, moisturising lip gloss infused with a blend of nutrient-rich botanical oils in 12 sheer shades from bare to berry to bold. This ultra-shiny gloss glides on in a burst of color while nutrient-rich botanical oils deeply nourishes the lips.

F

inding the perfect foundation can be challenging, and as your skin changes, so does its needs. As Spring appears, a dewy foundation or skin tint can be a welcome change from heavier coverage. When I choose a foundation I always look for SPF and ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, which improve your skin, so that you’re not just covering up flaws but actually treating them too. Here are five of the best hardworking bases I’ve found.

CC+ Illumination, £30, IT Cosmetics Containing SPF 50+ and infused with an advanced anti-aging serum, this CC cream provides flawless but lightweight coverage while protecting and nourishing the skin. A long-time favourite of mine, the illumination cream is the ideal segway into spring, but can be blended with the original IT Cosmetics CC+ cream if a more matte finish is desired. Flash Nude Fluid, £30, Filorga Designed to layer into buildable coverage and containing all-important SPF, this tinted moisturiser is a hybrid of skincare and make up and treats the skin like an anti-ageing skincare product does.

Battleof the Bases

Vegan Beauty Ink Well Long-Wear Matte Eyeliner in Whiteout or Darkwave, £17, KVD Ink Well’s long-wear eyeliner formula features Weightless Flex Technology to lock in quick-drying color that moves with your skin for a finish that doesn’t fade or crack. Available in six stunning shades. Superhero Liner, £20, IT Cosmetics Designed by plastic surgeons and packed full of skin-loving ingredients, Superhero Liner creates a super saturated, super black, super flawless line that won’t budge or smudge for 24 hours. Chelsea Jumpsuit Black, £64.95 Bronzie As the sun slowly reemerges and we risk having to bare some skin again, Bronzie has released the perfect companion for die-hard fake tanners. The Bronzie jumpsuit is designed to be worn post application. The specially designed fabric glides over freshly tanned skin to ensure reduced tan lines, while the breathable under arm area, velour lined hood, adjustable drawstring waist and stylish fit blend function with fashion. Geisha Lift Foundation, £28.50, diego dalla palma This delicate, natural cream is designed to sculpt the skin and make it look smooth and luminous, with a porcelain finish. Available in M&S. Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF 40/35, £48, Bobbi Brown Available in 23 shades, this silky bi-phase serum foundation is calibrated to your undertone to even out and correct the complexion in one simple step. The formula recharges skin’s appearance while providing an instantly luminous, natural-looking finish, while UVA/UVB defends skin against environmental stressors, and helps prevent collagen damage and fight signs of aging. Tinted Cover Foundation, £32, Nudestix Packed full of 18 natural extracts to help protect your skin and reduce signs of ageing, this foundation creates a bronzed and naturallooking complexion that will have you positively glowing and is available in 15 shades.

et ready now to make the most of all the sunshine that is likely to come our way in May. With some planning you won’t be caught out by summer starting early or disappointed if June and July let us down. It’s a matter of having everything ready for the family to be able to enjoy maximum outdoor time but with a few additional extras to keep everyone smiling, despite the pervading gloom. Everyone is more likely to linger at the table if you have created a welcoming and comfortable area for leisurely breakfasts, brunches and barbecues. And for kids, mum and dad are more likely to sit on and watch their tricks and skills if they’re sitting comfortably. It’s all about creating the surroundings to maximise the opportunities for quality time together throughout the day and while you snuggle together under the stars.

First comes furniture: Your old

wooden table and chairs may need a coat

of varnish or paint to bring them to life or you may be ready to invest in a new set. Make sure it’s sturdy enough to take the abuse kids can mete out and that there’s room at the table for everyone to feel welcome. Outdoor cushions are a must and add a touch of style to the patio.

Take the temperature: It can be chilly

off and on at any time of day but it’s a cert that evenings will be cooler. If you don’t want your indoor throws to take a pounding, some new fleecy throws will keep everyone cosy and add fresh colour and interest. Buy or make your own firepit and enjoy the feeling of sitting around a campfire under the stars in your own back yard. If you don’t like the idea of sparks flying around the children, there are lots of eco-friendly fuel alternatives to wood or you could get an outdoor gas fire which has the advantage of being easily turned on and off.

Going to ground: Outdoor rugs are hardwearing, waterproof and may save your toddler, your wine glass and any number

of other precious and fragile things from damage. Many use recycled plastic so are doing their bit for the environment – as well as your now increasingly gorgeous and inviting patio.

Glowing report: As the sun goes down, use solar lights placed throughout the garden together with outdoor lamps or lanterns and fairy lights to keep the magic going.

Take cover: Don’t let rain ruin your summer. While a summer house to retreat to with a book is the dream, a part roof over the patio or a gazebo that can be moved into place when needed will vastly extend the amount of time you can enjoy the outdoors.

Toasting marshmallows. Photo by Josh Campbell on Unsplash

S’moreplease

Children love making s’mores over an open fire. While the authentic US version uses Graham crackers and chocolate, for a perfectly yummy cheat’s version, all you need is long skewers, a packet of chocolate digestive biscuits (or plain biscuits and spread) and large marshmallows. Choose a time when the fire is at its smallest for safety reasons. Let them roast a marshmallow on a skewer for a minute or so then place on top of a biscuit smeared with chocolate. Place the other biscuit on top, give it a squeeze so the marshmallow goes nice and squishy and you’re ready to go. There are healthier, lower sugar versions out there but they’re Kitchencraft more of a s’okay than Colourworks set of a s’more. Unless your 4 assorted Silicone children are expecting Handle Skewers, these treats every day, £9.52, it’s all right to indulge www.amazon.co.uk them now and again.

Poison plants Kids enjoy getting their hands dirty Photo by Anna Earl on Unsplash

any keen gardeners caught the bug while ‘mucking’ about with their parents or grandparents when they were little. Getting the children to help out around the garden could sow more seeds than you might expect. Here are lots of things for little ones to do. At this time of year, they can discover the wonder of growing flowers from seed. Sunflowers are an obvious one – kids are amazed that something so small can make something so tall. Peas are another easy one and they’ll love picking the pods and popping them open in summer. Fresh peas eaten out of the pod should be on any child’s list of experiences. They can help you with all sorts of

planting, however. If you don’t trust them with your seeds, let them trowel compost into your seed trays and water them in. They can also stick the labels into the pots once you’ve written them. In May, show them how you plant up a hanging basket or window box – or go one better and give them one of their own. Let them help with feeding your houseplants too. It’s probably not wise to let them help with weeding as they may decide to have a go themselves when you aren’t looking and demolish your precious dahlias. Also, many popular plants are poisonous if ingested. Later on in the summer, they’ll love getting to hose the beds. Strawberries are easy to grow and

Many popular garden and houseplants are toxic if eaten while others are more likely to cause a rash. Anything from lillies to irises can pose a threat. Keep curious toddlers and pets away from these: • Foxglove or digitalis: A deadly toxin to humans and animals and a staple in cottage garden planting schemes • Belladonna: One of the most poisonous plants you can get • Lily of the valley: Also extremely dangerous to children and pets. • Oleander: Pretty flowers but highly toxic • Daffodils: Mildly poisonous, especially to pets For a comprehensive list of toxic plants, search www.rhs.org.uk exciting for children. Once the plants start producing runners, let the young ones create new plants by layering and they can make them their own.

Foodies can also choose from the exciting Kamado range (Kamado Joe, Monolith and Primo) whose ovens can smoke, bake and sear. Pizza ovens are huge and perfect for those family get togethers. The Great Outdoors is the main dealer in Ireland for the top quality, Italian built Alfa woodfired oven range. Choose from a one pizza oven for the family to the seven pizza oven for the catering trade. They also hire out Alfa ovens for large parties and restaurants and have an extensive commercial section, with demonstrations of respected brands such as ROASTER ovens and Grizzly Ovens. Fans of the latest trend for wood pellet smokers are in good hands with the Traeger range, which has been operating

for 30 years in the USA. Traeger’s 6-in-1 versatility means you can grill, smoke, bake, roast, braise and barbecue. From baby back ribs to wood-fired pizza, smoky mac and cheese and even homemade apple pie, anything you can cook up in your head, you can cook up on your Traeger. For those who love the convenience of gas, there’s a wealth of options to choose from including Napoleon barbecues, which are particularly popular for outdoor kitchens where a built in gas barbecue is a must. Come summertime, clients will be flocking to a new addition to The Great Outdoors BBQ Co called GO BBQ Barn as Roger and Emma have converted an old barn on their property at 89 Lurgan Road, Magheralin, into a 40 seater barbecue

restaurant for private corporate events, team building days or even a family celebration – and the odd barbecue class. “The theme we are aiming for is rustic and very casual,” says Roger. “We want people to have an amazing experience of live fire cooking. We aim to entertain, inspire and educate.” The work is almost finished and they plan to open the restaurant as soon as possible. “Also our friends have an amazing clay pigeon shooting club 1.5 miles away to work in conjunction with us to give people a full day’s activity,” adds Roger.
