HAT a night! The first Tourism NI Northern Ireland Food and Drink Awards in association with the Belfast Telegraph saw Derry~Londonderry and the North West crowned the big winner for promoting the area as a foodie destination. And locations from Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon to Comber, the Causeway Coast and the Sperrins were also celebrated for their contribution through tours and events to Tourism NI’s 2016 Year of Food and Drink. Around 300 guests attended the black-tie gala, hosted by broadcaster Sarah Travers. Terence Brannigan, chairman of Tourism NI, said it was “delighted” to join forces with the Belfast Telegraph to hold the awards. “Food is a vital part of any tourism experience; to the visitor it is as important as accommodation, culture and scenery. “Our Year of Food and Drink was established to highlight, celebrate and capitalise on the huge range of wonderful food and drink stories.” Welcoming guests, Belfast Telegraph managing director Richard McClean said that while 2016 had passed, the legacy of the Year of Food and Drink would continue. And he said he hoped that the event would be the first of many NI Food and Drink Awards in years to come. “We are here to make a

simple point and that is to remind ourselves that the year of food and drink was the ignition key to a much longer term commitment to the sector,” Mr McClean said. And he said the signs for the future of the sector were “very good”. “Our dairy, beef, pork and poultry exports are well established economic success stories. Close behind them are the fast developing seafood and produce industries carving for themselves an international reputation for excellence.” Guests at Thursday’s celebration were served a sumptuous, fivecourse banquet, planned and prepared by Culloden Hotel head chef Paul McKnight. Each course was served with a locally-brewed craft beer. And while Londonderry won the top award, products from Mash Direct’s Crispy Vegetable Bake to Lough Neagh eels were also feted. Tourism NI was the awards’ main sponsor, while categories were sponsored by catering firm Sodexo, Invest NI, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), Spar, Moy Park and Food NI. Mr McClean added: “We couldn’t run awards like these without the help of our sponsors and I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for their support. Our title sponsor Tourism NI really has been the driving force behind making Northern Ireland an exciting destination for food and drink.”
