What do women want?



It’s the million dollar question that men have been asking for centuries – what do women really want? Diamond earrings, designer handbags, Daniel Craig in a tuxedo? Or even better, all three? Of course it’s hard to generalise when it comes to the desires of the female heart, but it’s a pretty safe bet that most women like the finer things in life… luxurious lingerie, romantic trips away, spa treatments, expensive perfume, couture clothing. And handbags and shoes, like the gorgeous fashionistas Carly Hoey and Cathy Martin, featured in our magazine. While Carly admits to owning around 20 Mulberry handbags, Cathy has an enviable shoe collection which includes three pairs of Christian Louboutin courts. If you prefer to splash out on sprucing up your home, we also have the key interior trends for autumn/winter including tips from interior designer Patricia McGinnis, of Maven. While kitchen gadgets may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the success of television shows like the Great British Bake-Off has seen a rise in sales of equipment like cookie cutters, cake trays and sugar shakers as budding bakers attempt to be the next Mary Berry. Away from the kitchen, we interview Northern Ireland’s hottest jewellery maker Melanie Bond, creator of the Miss Ulster crown and the fabulous accessories worn by presenter Claire McCollum at the BBC’s Proms in the Park. Aesthetic nurse Nichola Hawes tells us how American celeb Kylie Jenner has prompted a new wave of 20 somethings to get their lips filled while stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry are giving the iS Clinical fire & ice an A lister

Who wouldn’t want Daniel Craig in a tuxedo thumbs up – beauty writer Davina Gordon finds out why. Davina also explores how to get the key autumn look for her locks with top stylist Bill Harris. Our section on hotels and spas will have you packing your bags – why not enter our competition to win a fab spa break at the Roe Park Resort? We also look at the cars you might like to take you there.... It’s not just material things that we women crave though. For most of us, we’d take good health, happiness and security over a Chanel handbag. Yes, really. And a man who looks like Poldark’s Aidan Turner to keep us warm on a cold winter’s night.

Dreaming of Manolos to call my own BY MAUREEN COLEMAN



As the founder of Belfast Fashionweek, on last week, it’s little wonder that Cathy Martin has an eye for style and a passion for shopping. Sourcing clothes and accessories for her seasonal fashion showcases means the PR boss knows a thing or two about handbags and shoes. When designer shoe boutique Harper opened in Belfast in 2007, Cathy was brought on board to promote the shop’s luxury Christian Louboutin range. As a treat to herself, she splashed out on her first pair of the iconic red-soled black courts and since then, has added two more pairs – black and blue studded – to her

envy-inducing Louboutin collection. However long before the spiked heels and red soles of the celebrity-endorsed shoe caught her eye, Cathy was indulging her shoe obsession. From budget-breaking designs by Jimmy Choo to high street brands such as Office, the mum-of-one reckons she now owns around 80 pairs of shoes, giving Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw a run for her money. “To be honest, I’ve given away or sold some of my shoes as I’ve been streamlining my wardrobe recently, but at the moment, I own around 80 pairs,” Cathy says. “When I was younger I only wore heels really, but as a busy mum with my own business, I’m running around or in the car quite a lot, so I also own quite a few pairs of pumps these days too. “There’s everything in my shoe collection: designer heels, flats, boots.

WHEN THEY’RE DRAWN, DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED WELL, THEY CAN ALSO BE AN ART FORM.

Cathy owns a replica of the Alexander McQueen Armadillo shoeas worn by Lady Gaga

Some days my trainers are my favourite shoe! “To me, shoes can be practical or sometimes they can be a good investment. And when they’re drawn, designed and constructed well, they can also be an art form.” Among her vast collection are around 20 pairs of designer shoes, including Yves St Laurent, Valentino Rock Studs, Gucci, Sergio Rossi, Giuseppe Zanotti and her own personal favourites, her Jimmy Choo Anouks. She also owns shoe ornaments, such as a replica of the Alexander McQueen headline-grabbing Armadillo (as worn by Lady Gaga) and a Manolo Blahnik silver metal shoe horn. There are dozens of high street brands too and when she spots a good pair, she buys in bulk. “My most worn pair of shoes are basic stilettos from Office,” she says. “I have these in lots of different colours: nude, pink, rose gold, blue and grey. They

Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays shoe obsessive Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, has launched her own shoe line go with everything, I can walk in them and they’re super flattering on the leg. And at just £65 a pair, they’re affordable too.” She’s reluctant to put a price on her sizeable shoe collection, but admits it runs into thousands of pounds. “I try not to think about that,” she laughs. “But some of the shoes are investment buys too.” The collection is so large it has to be housed in three different wardrobes. And, not surprisingly, her three and half year old, style-conscious daughter Valentina, is also showing signs that she shares her mum’s shoe lust. “Valentina’s collection is almost the same size as mine,” Cathy says.

Cathy Martin in her Jimmy Choo Anouk shoes “I love buying shoes. Some are a good investment, others just get me from A to B and some pairs are purely a guilty pleasure. “But what I really want is a pair of Manolos, not just an ornament of his shoes. I own an amazing book of his work and I just adore all his designs. Owning a pair of his shoes is the dream.”

Mulberry and me...

A GIFT TO HERSELF FOR HER 17TH BIRTHDAY STARTED A LOVE AFFAIR WITH MULBERRY HANDBAGS FOR BELFAST WOMAN CARLY HOEY, WRITES MAUREEN COLEMAN



The future owner of Bellaire Hair and Beauty had spotted a cream coloured wristlet in House of Fraser and decided to save up her birthday money to treat herself to the £280 design. Smaller than a clutch, the wristlet failed to impress her friends, who asked ‘is that it?’ when she produced the tiny Mulberry on a night out. But for Carly, the purchase represented a grown-up, glamorous, quality investment and the beginning of an obsession with Mulberry bags.

I BELIEVE IN COST PER WEAR. I’D RATHER SPEND A FEW HUNDRED POUNDS ON A HANDBAG THAT I KNOW I’LL CARRY TIME AFTER TIME

Now 25, Carly owns around 50 designer handbags, almost half of which bear the Mulberry label. It’s not about showing off or designer snobbery, she says. Instead, she loves the range’s soft leather, durability, varied colours and styles. “I don’t own any high street bags at all,” she explains. “I believe in cost per wear. I’d rather spend a few hundred pounds on a handbag that I know I’ll carry time after time than a cheaper bag that I’ll only use three or four times. If I spend around £1,300 on a bag, I’ll use it to the death. That way then I can justify spending that much money.” Carly’s Mulberry collection includes clutches, totes and shoulder bags, practical styles for daywear and elegant for evening. And they come in every size and shade. “I have yellow, red, grey, pink, tan, khaki green, a plummy purple and a few black as well. And I always buy the purse to go with the bag. I can’t have one without the other.” Most of her Mulberrys have been bought by her father or husband Ryan, a quality engineer. “Ryan’s very good about buying them,” she says. “He has to travel a bit with work so sometimes he gets them at the airport for me. “He likes the fact that I’m so easy to buy for. Any time there’s a special occasion like a birthday or Christmas, at least he doesn’t have to wonder about what to get me!” With such a large collection of handbags, her wardrobe designer had to create a space specifically for them when building Carly’s bedroom furniture.

“I have a big walk-in wardrobe and there’s a space at the top which was made especially for my handbags,” Carly says. “I know they run to a lot of money and I dread to think what the collection costs, but like I say, I get great wear out of them and I definitely don’t see them as a waste of cash. “Most of them are presents too and I know I’m very lucky that my dad and Ryan are so good to me. “Also, it means that hopefully if I have a little girl, I’ll be able to pass the collection onto her.” However Carly admits that after seven years of collecting Mulberry bags, she’s now got her eye on a new designer. “I just love Victoria Beckham’s tote bags,” she says. “I don’t see anything wrong with buying designer handbags. “I wear clothes and shoes from the high street and I don’t really drink, so designer handbags are my one real indulgence. They’re just something that I really adore.”

According to top stylist Bill Harris, it’s about accepting the hair that you have and working with it. I have never liked my hair. It’s coarse, unruly, thick and takes a lot of work to make it look half acceptable. It’s been coloured, bleached, straightened and tonged - no wonder it’s rebelling. The day I visited Bill Harris Hairdressing was the first day of the rest of my life, where my hair was concerned at least. “You need to go with something that matches your hair type,” says Seaneen, my lovely colourist. Turns out what she had in mind wasn’t too far off what I wanted either. I wanted a choppy bob, shoulder length, for now, until I’m brave enough to go even shorter. I’ve had long hair for a long time and wanted to keep it so for my wedding in August. But I had made the commitment to get it chopped soon after. Maybe it’s because I’m starting a new chapter in my life or maybe it’s the autumn. There’s definitely something about the chill in the air and the blanket of auburn, red and gold leaves to get you in the mood for a change. Colour wise, I wanted to stay close to my natural hair which is light brown with a hint of red. Seaneen knew exactly what to do. I was to get a mixture of brown and bronze with flashes of copper at the front to frame the face and add the illusion of movement. It’s a much more subtle technique than ombre. As Seaneen pointed out, the autumn isn’t just about autumnal tones. You can go plum, violet, purple, even lilac. Summer was huge for pastels and they’re not ready to bow out just yet. So if you’re thinking of a change, don’t be afraid to be bold and have some fun. According to Bill, the proprietor: “Nineties grunge is back, but this time round, it’s all about conditioned hair, not static, damaged hair.” Think the Black Opium ad campaign

Love the hair you’re born with

Davina’s hair before (above) and after her visit to Bill Harris

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO BEAUTIFUL HAIR? DAVINA GORDON THINKS SHE’S FOUND IT by Yves Saint Laurent featuring a glossy raven-haired Edie Campbell. So, what’s the one thing you should do to keep your mane looking good? Well, according to Bill it’s about good shape and good weight balance. “Don’t fight your hair type!” he grins. As Seaneen mixed my Alfaparf Evolution

colour, adding a soothing infusion called ‘Equipment’ for my dry scalp, I was keen to know how to keep it looking vibrant. Apparently, copper colours are the hardest to keep looking rich. Seaneen recommends using a Sulfur-free shampoo and a conditioning mask every second wash for one or two weeks after getting your hair coloured and then every second or third shampoo. Next up was the all important cut. Stylist Kerry says that the ’70s vibe is in where cuts are concerned. It’s all about the boho look and fringes that frame the face. I was going to have about four inches taken off and then have some soft layers added to complement my hair’s natural texture. How often should you have it cut? According to Kerry, if it’s short, 4-6 weeks and if it’s long, 8-12 weeks. Of course, it’s all very well keeping your hair free of split ends, but how do you achieve that gorgeous, shiny salon look at home? For my hair type, Kerry recommends blast drying until your hair is about 80% dry and then drying in sections with a medium barrel brush. The key is medium heat on a high power. Kerry adds that you should always blow dry

away from your face. After blow drying, she recommends using Alfaparf Precious Nature oil, which you can use to finish your style too. For extra va-va voom if you are hitting the town, Glam-Tex will give you texture and hold, plus it’ll smell delicious when you’re swishing your hair about on the dance floor! As you can see from the before and after photos, Bill Harris Hairdressing has completely transformed my look and I love it. It’s now up to me to take what I’ve learned from my wonderful experience and apply it at home. It’s not going to be easy but half the battle is accepting the hair that you have. As Bill put so eloquently, “It’s not the shape you are, it’s the shape you’re in”. That too, my friends, applies to your hair. My natural nails are dreadful! They’re bendy and chip and split and no amount of OPI Nail Envy or avocado smoothies can help them. That’s why I always keep them covered with press-on nails, but they quickly show wear or, sometimes embarrassingly, pop off unexpectedly. Then I discovered acrylics… Nails, like nice teeth, are something I always notice, and often envied, in others. Colour co-ordination in clothes, jewellery, shoes and handbags is second nature to me and now my acrylic nails are added to the mix. I get in-fills and a re-paint every three weeks. I actually get excited as my next appointment approaches and plan the shape, colours and art I want with military precision. I’ve tried out stiletto, almond and coffin shapes, but always go back to the trusted square. Nail art, I just love, as it creates a unique look, especially with a wee bit of glitter or jewels thrown in for good measure! Marbling is fabulous on nails, as you get to include different colours that match more outfits…always a good thing! My nails are often commented on. I don’t feel dressed without them. Acrylic nails tick all the boxes for me…I can be creative, unique with design, they don’t break and they always look ‘just done’. Do I worry about my own nails and the effect

acrylics have on them? No I don’t, as my natural nails can never be what I want them to be. Nail studios, mostly, offer a calming environment where I can ‘zone out’ and relax, always a welcome luxury. ‘Me’ time is limited, but important, and I just love to be pampered. I need to give a shout-out to Cathy at Vintage Nails, in Carrickfergus who I’ve just started going to and, due to the fabulous job she has done, now has a loyal customer. Gwyneth Paltrow is reported to advocate iS Clinical fire & ice (Ian West/PA Wire)

Beauty really is skin deep

BY DAVINA GORDON



I’M NOT a high maintenance girl but when I get a chance to have a little down time in the name of beauty, I’m all over it. Dim lighting, cosy robe, the scent of aromatherapy oils and someone massaging my head, yes please! But what about a treatment that actually works under the skin? When I heard that the treatment was called ‘iS Clinical fire & ice’, well, my imagination ran wild. I needn’t have worried as it turns out - oh, did I mention I was going to be one of the first to experience it in Northern Ireland? Yes, Beauty Culture is the only salon offering this intensive medi-facial from an LA-based company. It has a big celeb following, so you’re in great company! I’ve combination skin, oily forehead or double T-Zone (I’ve been told), occasional dry patches on my chin and sides of my nose. I don’t have sensitive skin to speak of, but I do have something going on inside that is manifesting itself in the nasty form of inflamed eyelids and patches of flaky skin. Despite hours of research I’m no closer to finding out why my skin is like this. I’m a newlywed, so I can apportion some of the blame for with weird skin to the wedding preparation stress but what else? “It’s all about neutralising your body,” says therapist and proprietor of Beauty Culture, Caroline Purdy. So, if your body is too acidic,

you’re likely going to have issues with your skin. “Lemon water first thing is great for alkalising the body and a probiotic is good for redressing the imbalance of bad bacteria.” Prior to the treatment, I had a thorough consultation to see if my skin would be suitable for the iS Clinical range. Even though I’ve delicate, Irish skin, I was all set, joining the likes of Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow, both fans of this intensive medi-facial. I settled down snug as a bug for treatment. It only takes 30 minutes and thankfully, there is zero down time so you can carry on with your life with just a few things to bear in mind for the next 48 hours, namely, avoiding the sun, alcohol and any activity that might cause you to sweat. Well avoiding the sun won’t be a problem given our climate but a glass of wine might be harder! “Anything that dehydrates your skin should be avoided,” says Caroline. To start, Caroline used Cleansing Complex which contains Safflower Seed Oil and Coconut Oil to remove any traces of makeup, which felt lovely. Next up was the bit I was most nervous about, the fire part! Thankfully no fire was involved and all you feel is your skin tingling but it’s only for about two minutes. I can handle this. Caroline brushed on the Intensive Resurfacing Mask. “This is OK!” I thought and then like eating a chilli, the heat kicked in. It’s a weird sensation but it’s bearable and

23 October 2015 | Belfast Telegraph the mask is off before you know it. Next up was the Rejuvenating Masque, the ice bit, which felt gorgeous. As well as the masque, Caroline used pebbles to drain my lymph nodes. These little fellas release toxins from your skin, which is pretty important for your skin’s health. We have these at our ears, temples and neck. It’s pretty easy to do, you just sweep out towards your lymph nodes using your fingertips (great for reducing puffy eyes in the morning). The next step was the application of a Hydra Cool Serum containing botanically derived hydrochloric acid (super for retaining moisture) and Youth Eye Complex, great for

Caroline recommended Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser and Barrier Repair for Davina’s dry skin

crow’s feet and dark under eye circles. Finally, Caroline applied Extreme Protect SPF 30 (which you ought to use daily). Ah, my skin is so glowy. I just had a little bit of redness around my nose and the middle of my chin. “The redness is due to something going on in your body,” Caroline says. Dryness on your chin is related to digestion issues (which I suffer from) and the dryness on the nose is related to stress! Check! Caroline certainly knows beauty inside and out. I’m prescribed Sheald Recovery Balm which relieves dryness with nourishing, restorative hydration. To complement the iS Clinical range, Dermalogica is also recommended for aftercare. I’m advised to use Ultra Calming Cleanser and Barrier Repair for my poorly eyelids. I’m really impressed with Caroline and the overall experience, from the initial consultation, through to the treatment and aftercare. If you’ve a big event coming up like a wedding or other special occasion, this is a brilliant way to get clear, bright and smooth skin. The treatment is also great for problematic, dehydrated, uneven complexions and hyperpigmentation. The iS Clinical fire & ice facial is ideal for a one-off or you can opt for a course of three. It costs £80 which is very reasonable given that you get to see the results straight away. I don’t even want to wear make-up and that’s saying something! I couldn’t recommend it enough. Beauty? It really is skin deep.

Beauty Culture is open from Tuesday to Sunday with three late nights Tuesday to Thursday. Visit Beauty Culture www.beautyculture.co.uk www.facebook.com/beautyculturebelfast or call 028 9046 0100 for an appointment.

We are Maven

Based just off Belfast’s Lisburn Road, Maven champions the very best of design from both established and emerging homeware brands. Run by sisters Catherine and Patricia McGinnis, Maven is nestled in the beautiful Reid Memorial Hall, a former meeting hall, and sells some of the most coveted brands in the world. Names such as Hay, Muuto, Marimekko and Ferm Living sit along side Irish designer-makers such as Derek Wilson Ceramics and Superfolk. Catherine explains how Maven was born: “Through our design projects

we were constantly having to source products online and were aware that many of the brands we loved were not available locally. We felt there was a real opportunity in Belfast to open a space selling international brands that we loved. We also recognised that there are many incredible Irish brands, with no NI stockists and we really wanted to celebrate these brands and give them a platform. In short, we wanted there to be a place filled with the products that we wanted to buy but couldn’t. We know that ‘retail’ today has to be about more than your generic high street offering and we believe that with our range of brands and the space we sell them in, we can offer customers something a bit special. “In addition to giving our customers a range of products they can’t buy anywhere else locally, we ensure that every single person who comes through our doors feels welcome and valued. Everyone is welcome at Maven and we pride ourselves on that, many regular customers have now become friends.” The shop has already made a name for itself as a serious design destination. Since opening in November 2013, it has been shortlisted twice in the Irish Times Best Shops in Ireland Awards and Patricia writes a monthly column for a magazine.

The sisters also run an interior design service meaning you can choose a single piece with expert advice, or opt to redesign an entire room or house. Patricia heads up the interiors side

of things and describes a typical Maven customer: “Our customers love their homes. Many of them are super stylish and well-travelled with a keen eye for great design and quality. They are often inspired by the clean lines of Scandinavian designed pieces and want design led furniture and accessories which they struggle to find it anywhere else in Ireland.” With such a carefully considered edit of the very best of products and interior design along with a friendly and expert team, it’s no wonder that design aficionados are hot-footing it to the Lisburn Road from all over Ireland.

Shining a light on your kitchen



The right lighting in your kitchen is crucial. A kitchen is not merely a place to prepare food, nut is quite often the heart of the home and people are spending more and more time in their kitchens. It is therefore just as important to layer your lighting in your kitchen as you would in any other room in your house. Even more so, if you have a kitchen/ dining room and subsequently spend lots of time in the space.

Rows of spotlights are not necessarily a prerequisite. Work surfaces do need good task lighting, and this can come from downlights or pendants. As well as adding impact and visual interest, a row of pendants over an island will help provide a visual divide between the dining and kitchen areas. Above a dining table is an ideal place to install a real show stopper of a pendant and as before will ‘frame’ the area as a dining room.

Don’t forget about lamps in your kitchen as these are really overlooked. If you want the kind of home where people congregate in the kitchen way after a meal has finished, then you need to ensure they are comfortable and cosy. Fitness – what’s trending? BODY WEIGHT TRAINING

There’s been a massive upsurge in the number of people bodyweight training – largely because it’s free. Cancel your gym membership, you don’t need expensive equipment, all you need is yourself. Bodyweight training is highly efficient and yields high fitness gains over short durations and the lack of equipment makes it easy to transition from one move to the next with little rest. It is challenging at any fitness level and significantly improves core strength and flexibility. One type is high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in which you give 100% effort through a quick but intense burst of exercise followed by a short recovery period. Despite the short duration, this method keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time, which has to be a bonus. Another popular, if exhausting, bodyweight training technique is a burpee exercise. Combining a squat, a push up and a jump performed in quick succession, burpees use every muscle in your body making them an extremely efficient exercise. Combining burpees with push ups or lunges creates a combined cardio and strength exercise, keeping your heart pumping while encouraging muscle development. Another reason for its popularity is that bodyweight training burns fat fast, only a few minutes of the exercises will increase the body’s metabolism – great for the vast majority of us who struggle to fit exercise into already hectic lives.

PILOXING

Don’t let the name put you off - the latest fitness craze from LA doesn’t necessitate being a pillock and devotees extol piloxing’s mental and physical benefits. This hour-long, high energy cardio workout combines pilates and boxing, burning up to 900 calories per session. Classes take place in gyms all over the UK or save yourself the membership fee and grab the DVD (Piloxing - The Original V Pilates Workout). Invented in LA by Swedish dancer and celebrity trainer, Viveca Jensen, piloxing is suitable for everyone, promising improved cardiovascular health, increased flexibility and stress relief.

CORE STRENGTH

Fitness gurus everywhere emphasise the importance of a strong ‘core’ or torso. There are lots of exercises you can do to ensure that you work the muscles in your core, and it’s important to use a combination of exercises in order to work all of the major muscle groups in the abdomen and back. Kettle bells are fantastic for core workouts; take the kettle bell with your left hand and stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Bring the kettle bell to your left shoulder, then push it up straight over your head. Rotate your chest to the left, look up at the kettlebell and try to touch your right foot with your right hand. Pause, then return to the beginning while keeping your arm extended. Do this eight times before lowering the kettle bell, then repeat on the other side.

I HAVE been to classes but I prefer the gym as people in class can be a bit competitive. The main reason I do it is so that I can eat whatever I like and that’s a lot! I go with my best friend Lyndsey Cooke to Carrick Leisure Centre. We do 30 minutes on the cross-trainer, followed by 15 minutes leg weights, 40 stomach crunches and then leg presses. Sometimes if I have enough time I do arm weights. We don’t even see the time going by because we’re chatting the whole way through. The best bit is after the work out when we head for the sauna and we sit in there and chat more. It’s the only time we get to see each other. I usually go twice a week but if I’m going out on Saturday night, I’ll go that afternoon as well because it makes me feel good.

GET fit, eat healthily and live life to the full. Laudable aims in anyone’s book but for some people the desire to get fit and healthy can become a mental health issue. If the thought of not reaching your weekly exercise goals or maintaining a completely healthy diet creates feelings of anxiety and dread, you like many others, could be experiencing an eating disorder called orthorexia. This deceptive disorder piggy backs on what begins as a healthy desire to reach peak condition. Vanessa Baird, project co-ordinator with the charity Adapt Eating Distress, explains: “Orthorexia is when somebody becomes obsessed about ‘clean eating’ and exercise. “People can become so obsessed with eating ‘pure’ foods that they lose control of a balanced diet and lifestyle. People affected

will experience high anxiety around their food choices & exercise regimes. “It might start off with avoiding sugary foods and then escalates until they’re ruling out fruit. Likewise, if you said to them, ‘Give the gym a miss next week’, that would cause distress.” Vanessa said: “People with orthorexia tend not to have any sense of satisfaction once they have reached their goal or to be happy with what they have achieved; there is a constant pursuit for body perfection. “People are sometimes aware of how this is affecting their mind and they can see that it is controlling their lives.” If you think your desire for healthy eating is out of control, email info@adapteatingdistress.com, or visit www.adapteatingdistress.com.

Chain reaction for Melanie’s jewellery



When Melanie Bond was studying Law at Queen’s University, a friend of her mother’s introduced her to the creative world of jewellery making. After learning how to thread beads and attach clasps, Melanie began designing her own range of jewellery. What began as a hobby developed over the course of the next few years and Melanie now runs her own bespoke business, creating bold, colourful costume jewellery and statement pieces from her home in Donaghcloney, Co Down. The self-taught designer juggles her commissions with a full-time job as a solicitor and being mum to Rosa, who is three and a half, and five-month-old Timothy. Her jewellery – necklaces, pendants, bracelets, necklaces and cuffs – has been worn by celebrities, appeared in fashion magazines and adorned

catwalk models and brides. She also designed the tiara used to crown Miss Ulster. “I describe my jewellery as every day glamour pieces,” says Melanie. “I design pieces that reflect the buyer’s personality or that match an outfit if they’re going to a special event. “I get commissioned to make pieces for weddings, for the bride and guests, or for events like the races or award ceremonies. “I recently designed a necklace for Claire McCollum, when she was presenting the BBC Proms in the Park. I kept it quite simple, a vintage inspired piece made from black glass beads. It was a pretty amazing feeling when I saw her on stage, wearing my necklace. However I had to rush backstage to dismantle her dangly earrings to little studs because they kept getting caught by the microphone. That was an experience.”

VINTAGE HAS BEEN BACK WITH A BANG FOR AGES AND IT’S SHOWING NO SIGNS OF GOING AWAY. RECAPTURE THE STYLE OF BYGONE DAYS WITH THESE NECKLACES

The Harriet is a statement bib necklace with jewelled embellishment which nails this season’s trend for red and ‘more is more’ jewellery, £75 from Melanie Bond Jewellery and Vintage on Facebook or email mel@melaniebond.co.uk

Melanie has also designed a necklace for Dame Mary Peters to wear to the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards in London. “That was a collection stable called Esther, which consisted of three strands of plaited, purple beads. She wore it to go with an outfit designed by local man David Henderson. I was very excited to see her wearing that piece.” Melanie’s business developed organically, as her reputation grew via word-of-mouth and social networking sites. These days she’s kept busy with her private commissions and boutique collections, sometimes working through the night to ensure her pieces are finished in time. For autumn/winter, she predicts that rose gold and navy will be popular hues, while chunky chains and brooch style pendants will be also be best-sellers. So who would she like to design for, if given the chance? “I’d absolutely love to create a piece for Beyonce,” she says. “Or someone stylish like Kate Middleton. That would be pretty special to see her wear one of my pieces.”

8 reasons to indulge in a pampering package

We all know the advantages of a getaway break; we can take time out to unwind, de-stress and catch up on quality sleep. But there’s something special about a spa holiday. Aside from the holistic health benefits of spa therapies and pampering sessions, many are situated in picturesque surroundings, giving the guest the perfect opportunity to take in the local beauty. Spa breaks can also be used to kickstart a diet, particularly if the venue you book into prides itself on healthy, organic cuisine.

1. De-stress

Here are some of the benefits of a spa break.

2. Detox

Modern day living can be very stressful. Long working hours, financial pressures and relationship problems can all combine to make you miserable. Relieving stress is an essential part of your spa holiday and you will never be short of treatments and activities. These can range from relaxing massages to holistic activities such as yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi. Hydrotherapy and full body massages can be particularly good at getting rid of tension from your muscles and enhancing your overall well-being.

Clear your mind and body from unwanted toxins with a good detox. Cleansing

your system, removing bad toxins and regenerating new blood back into your body will help re-energise you. A specialised detox holiday will be more tailor-made to a client and could include a juice detox programme or a specific diet.

3. Be pampered

Eveyone loves a little bit of pampering and it’s one of the best things about a spa break. Lie back, close your eyes and enjoy the moment with luxurious treatments such as as Ayurveda massages, Reiki and a hot stone massage.

4. Healthy Ageing

On a healthy ageing spa holiday, you will find a number of anti-ageing treatments, which will help you look and feel younger on both the inside and out. Many medical spas include specialised skincare treatments such as non-surgical facials, peels and exfoliation.

5. Sleep

Therapeutic treatments lead to better quality of sleep and we all need our forty winks to function properly. If you’ve been feeling a bit sleep deprived of late, then opt for treatments such as reflexology, acupuncture or aromatherapy massage.

f

6. Weight Loss

Some spas specifically target weight loss, allowing you to unwind while cutting calories. Weight loss can be achieved by following a combination of fitness activities and healthy diet plans, which include physical examinations, medical plans, nutrition consultations and private sessions with a personal trainer. If your spa doesn’t specialise in weight loss, it may offer inch loss wraps, which help you to detox and kickstart a healthy eating plan.

7. Aches and Pains

Sitting hunched over a computer all day can lead to stiff necks, shoulder pain and tension knots. Going on a spa holiday, however, may help you combat any aches and pains you have. You can choose from an extensive range of alternative therapies, which can loosen tight knots and tackle problem areas. These therapies can include acupuncture, physiotherapy, reflexology and sport massages.

8. Equilibrium

Water and heat treatments are perfect to help find true balance and to stimulate blood circulation. Alternate treatments to maximise the effect

The Brontes are calling the shots when it comes to my dating games

BY MAUREEN COLEMAN

It’s often been said of me that I don’t know what I want, particularly when it comes to love and romance. Career-wise, I knew from an early age what I wanted to do and by the age of 18, was writing my own music column in a daily newspaper. In every day life, I don’t dilly-dally. I’m a joy to go shopping with, straight in and out, buy what I want and then leave. So why don’t I know what I want where relationships are concerned? After all, if I knew my own heart’s desires, I’d be coupled up like everyone else, right? The problem is, I do know what I want, I just don’t think he’s out there. Or if he is, he just hasn’t appeared on my radar yet. In a recent attempt to cast my net further, I dipped my toe in the online dating pool. I was complimented, propositioned and asked out by various males, ranging in age from a testerone-fuelled teen to a more mature gent is his 60s. One potential suitor from New York offered to fly me to Madrid to meet up. As one does. I politely declined. I was also angrily criticised by several men, who questioned my reasons for joining such a site. When I admitted that I hadn’t actually been on any dates so far, one man accused me of wasting his time. Another wrote: “Why did you bother signing up if you’re not going to date anyone on here? You obviously haven’t a clue what you want.” I was sorely tempted to respond: “Oh believe me, I do, and it’s certainly not you,” but I decided to spare his overly-sensitive feelings. It wasn’t a totally disastrous experience though. I did meet a hunk of a man, who looks like a cross between Michael Fassbender and Daniel Craig. And let’s face it ladies, that’s never a bad thing. It’s all in his smile. And stubbly chin. And strong arms. He works in the arts and he loves the outdoors. And before the cynics dare to ask “so why’s this fine specimen of manhood single?”, well, maybe he hasn’t found what he’s looking for either. I blame the Bronte sisters for my too-high expectations of love and romance. I was a gullible, impressionable school-girl when I first read the masterpieces Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and fell under the spell of

Maureen’s top tips for finding romance

 KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

Draw up a wish list of what type of partner you are looking for, that way you can separate the wheat from the chaff. If you want to meet someone your own age, don’t get involved in back-and-forth chit-chat with guys young enough to be your son. They may be cute and fun to flirt with but seriously, why bother wasting your valuable time?

 KEEP YOUR PROFILE SHORT

AND INTRIGUING You’re trying to entice people in, not send them to sleep. Keep your profile snappy and interesting. Long, wordy summaries tend to turn people off.

 CHOOSE YOUR PROFILE

PHOTO CAREFULLY Ok, this might be superficial, but let’s be honest, first impressions count. Put up a flattering picture and for goodness sake, smile. You don’t want to let potential suitors think you’re a miserable sod or a serial killer. Don’t put up a stupid “look at me, taking a selfie” picture, complete with mobile phone in hand, you’ll look narcissistic. Don’t put up photos of your pet, you’re a person, not a cat. And avoid profile pictures where you’re draped over a member of the opposite sex. This doesn’t say ‘desired’, it screams ‘desperate’.

Maureen with screen hunk Liam Neeson the brooding Byronic anti-heroes Mr Rochester and Heathcliff. Jane Eyre’s Mr Rochester was everything I thought a real man should be; mysterious, intense, powerful. The fact he had a mad wife locked up in his attic while pledging his troth to the mousey governess, I chose to overlook. As for Heathcliff, well, he was a god among men – passionate, sexy, dramatic. He was also ever-so-slightly deranged, demonic and hellbent on destroying all those who hurt him, not to mention the fact that he dug up his loved one’s remains and embraced her skeletal corpse. But these were just his little idiosyncrasies. He was wonderful, really. Recently my Bronte obsession threatened to be overshadowed by a new romantic figure, the dark, brooding, beautiful Captain Ross Poldark. Played by Irish actor Aidan Turner, the Cornish-based Sunday night drama became a massive hit for the BBC, thanks, in no small part, to the sight of our bare-chested hero scything in a field. But it wasn’t just Poldark’s topless farming antics that caught this writer’s eye. Honestly. The character is also compassionate, strong and fights for what he believes in. These are qualities I admire in a man, alongside general hotness. I’m not completely shallow. So next time someone accuses me of not knowing what I want, I’ll explain that I know only too well. I want a man who’s faithful, funny and has a lovely, wide smile. He must be passionate, intelligent, caring and loyal and like music, film and the outdoors. A nice scent and great dress sense would also help. And if he looks like Captain Poldark, I won’t complain.

 BE HONEST

Aidan Turner, as Captain Poldark, has finally knocked the Bronte men from their perches in Maureen’s heart

Some people feel tempted to exaggerate about their achievements or hobbies. If you’re not into mud wrestling, don’t claim you are. You may get a rude awakening on your first date! And don’t put up a profile photo from 10 years ago. Your date will be disappointed if you look more like Hugh Hefner than Hugh Jackman. Let your personality, honesty and charm shine through.

 STAY SAFE

Michael Fassbender as Mr Rochester

Don’t exchange personal details until you feel confident you can trust your potential date. You don’t want some stalker turning up at your front door or texting you constantly. And don’t exchange saucy photographs online with a stranger. You never know where they’ll turn up! Tell a friend where you’re meeting your date, just in case you can never be too safe. And choose somewhere public. A coffee shop is always appropriate for a first meeting.

Ever wish you could hold back time? WHO DOESN’T WANT TO LOOK THEIR BEST, WHATEVER THEIR AGE? THESE DAYS INCREASING NUMBERS OF WOMEN – AND MEN – ARE OPTING FOR GENTLE COSMETIC TREATMENTS TO HELP THEM STAY YOUNGER LOOKING FOR LONGER



AESTHETIC nurse Nichola Hawes, whose practice Be You is based in Bangor, says women in their 20s are much more open about having treatment than the over 30s. “Some people, especially over 40s, would want changes to be subtle. They just want to look fresher, not as tired and don’t want people to look at them and ask what have they got done. “The young generation want everyone to look at them and know that they have got something done. They are taking photos and putting them on Snapchat and Instagram and they want the ‘frozen’ look.” While Nichola has several clients in their 20s, the majority are slightly more mature and like to keep the fact that they are getting a bit of help private. “I set up practice in my home as so many people are uncomfortable about sitting in a waiting room with other people in case anyone would recognise them.” She explains that the horror stories one reads involve permanent implants and facelifts which are a surgical procedure. “It’s like breast implants, people can get permanent cheek implants and they are the ones which can cause problems, become infected or whatever and have to be surgically removed. “The benefit of filler and anti-wrinkle injections is that they are not permanent.” She says the anti-wrinkle injections are the most popular treatment, particularly with those aged 25-65. After the age of 65 the benefits decrease as the facial lines tend to be deeper. “Anti-wrinkle injections and filler do different things and work on different parts of the face so you have to understand the effects and the results that people want.”

What is the difference?

“The filler is a natural product that your body metabolises – Hyaluronic Acid, it’s found in all your moisturisers. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to live with it as it wears off gradually. I would use dermal filler on the cheeks, nasal labial folds (the deep crease at the sides of the nose) and above the upper lip to remove smoker’s lines. “With dermal fillers you instantly see the difference and it’s instant satisfaction for the client and for me. “Anti-wrinkle injections are used for the

Clients before and after lip fill and (below) Anti-wrinkle injections frown line between the eyes, the brow and crows’ feet at the outsides of the eyes. “Because it’s a gradual process it takes between 3-10 days for the anti-wrinkle injection to work. It lasts 3-5 months. It gradually softens the lines so you don’t leave looking any different. I have to wait two weeks to find out how happy they are. “The big thing at the minute and I think it’s

to do with magazines and celebrities such as Kylie Jenner is filler in the lips. My youngest client requesting lip filler is 23 and the oldest is 72. The 72 year old didn’t want dramatically big lips, she had just found that she didn’t have enough lip left to wear lipstick and she missed it. She was delighted with the result.” Sometimes Nichola sends younger clients away a little deflated. “Younger girls come in with pictures of stars and say I want lips like that. I have to tell them I’m going to do it gradually and they’ll have to come back in two weeks. I would never put in a lot of product at once.” She has also had to refuse some people anti-wrinkle injections as she realised their expectations were too high. “Some people think it works like a facelift and you have to explain that they aren’t going to get the look they want to achieve.” She said the main reason younger people book a treatment is as a preventative measure. “The more you frown the deeper the lines get. The anti-wrinkle injection relaxes that muscle and stops you from being able to use it. Some of the younger ones come in with the slightest frown line and go quick, inject it now so it doesn’t get any bigger.” Chatting over coffee in Nichola’s spacious kitchen I was increasingly conscious of my furrowed brow and eye wrinkles compared to Nichola’s smooth contours and yet her face looks completely natural. It is easy to see how people would like to continue once they have had a treatment done. “People always want to come back. Everybody likes it and wants to get it done again. “There are risks involved, especially with the anti-wrinkle injection and I would always make people aware of those. You are injecting into the muscle and depending on

how your muscles react you can get a droop of the eye brow instead of a raise, however, it’s not a permanent thing and normally the practitioner can fix it. “I thought when I started doing this that my clients would be from the upper classes but in fact it seems as if everybody is getting it done. One of my clients is a tradesman. My male clients wouldn’t come in so much for the filler as the anti-wrinkle injections. It’s not just gay men either but straight men too. “Women would get it done if they’re coming up to a big occasion and they want to look their best. It’s great to see them feeling so confident and happy and looking forward to the big event instead of dreading it. It does involve a needle but you are not permanently changing anything, you are just making the most of yourself, hence the name Be You. “I offer a free review and it’s important that clients come back and tell me what they like and if they had too much movement or not enough. Some people don’t like the fact that they can’t move their eyebrows so I’ll put in a bit less the next time. It’s like your hairdresser, they need to get to know their client and what they like too.” Nichola gets a lot of job satisfaction. “I think it’s the whole nursing side of me. Nurses go into the profession because they care for people and it gives me a lot of satisfaction and makes me feel good when clients are delighted with the result and leave feeling a lot more confident.” To find a facial aesthetic clinic near you visit www.whatclinic.com/beauty-clinics/ uk/northern-ireland/dermal-fillers.
