Camberwell School of Art / Teachers and Students, a Selection In 2015 Belgrave St Ives, in partnership with St Ives Society of Artists, mounted a joint exhibition across both galleries titled 40 Years of Painting – Camberwell Students and Teachers 1945–85. An exhibition of work by over 80 artists, the show was only made possible with the energy and enthusiasm of John Watson, Chair of St Ives Society of Artists, AKA ‘Camberwell Collector’ and the support of numerous artists, their families and galleries not least the fabulously spirited nonagenarian Sir Anthony Eyton who kindly wrote the introduction for the catalogue to the exhibition.

most notably Victor Pasmore, Claude Rogers and William Coldstream, members of the ‘Euston Road School’ brought in to teach by the Principal William Johnstone during the early 1940s. The appointment of Martin Bloch by subsequent Principal Leonard Daniels added a more European flavour to the mix. Robert Medley, appointed Head of Painting in 1958, believed the ‘Coldstream’ manner of drawing had become too formulaic and made appointments to widen the range of artistic experiences for example Charles Howard and Frank Auerbach.

This new exhibition is a more succinct, personal selection of artists I associate with my time at Camberwell alongside other Camberwell artists.

During my time at Camberwell, in the late 1970s, there was still a very strong Camberwell identity represented by artists Francis Hoyland, Dick Lee and Philip Matthews for example alongside more expressionistic artists such as Mario Dubsky, Gary Wragg and Arnold Van Praag. Current trends were represented by visiting lecturers; Frank Bowling, Gerry Hunt and Marc Chaimowicz. The course was very thoroughly structured especially during the first year with formal exercises, evening classes (compulsory life-drawing) and materials practice.

The word ‘Camberwell’, within the context of art, engenders an identity synonymous with a strong work ethic, an earnest gritty realism honed on observational drawing alongside a craftsman-like understanding and appreciation of materials that produces a particular form of painterly expression. Opened in 1898, next door to the South London Art Gallery, under the auspices of the London County Council ‘to give the best artistic and technical education to all classes in the district’, Camberwell School of Art and Crafts offered day and evening classes in a wide range of subjects from Architecture to Typography with an emphasis on ‘trade’ crafts. Pottery and book-binding/paper conservation in particular reached heights of acclaim as well as the ‘fine arts’ of drawing, painting and sculpture. The School maintained local links through its ‘Junior School’ and Saturday Morning Art Classes whilst attracting important artists of national reputation to teach there. There was never a ‘school of’ as such but like-minded artists and students coalesced at different stages of Camberwell’s evolution

Wendy Smith became Head of Fine Art in 1980 appointing artists such as Noel Forster, John Hilliard, Cornelia Parker and Phyllida Barlow and the college became part of the London Institute, subsequently amalgamated into the University of the Arts London. I hope this personal selection of paintings and drawings provides a genuine reflection of the nature of art produced by some of the artists that have passed through this historic art school.
