BELLA Magazine: The Gratitude Issue featuring La La Anthony

Page 1

LETTER from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

THE GRATITUDE ISSUE I

am so excited to share with you BELLA’s Gratitude Issue! I wanted this issue to reflect not just the gifts we are thankful for receiving during the holiday season, but in essence, the feeling of gratitude for so much we already have in our lives. You receive from the world what you give to the world. I have learned that the key is not to pay back kindness, but to pass it on. Did you know that an act of appreciation affirms our connection to each other? It validates us. It expands who we are in the world. Check out some of the things I am grateful for in this issue’s “5 Steps to Fabulous” on page 20, and most importantly, what our team is grateful for on page 68. Continuing on our #Braving journey, Brené Brown says,“To

become fully human means learning to turn my gratitude for being alive into some concrete common good. It means growing gentler toward human weakness. It means practicing forgiveness of my and everyone else's hourly failures to live up to divine standards. It means learning to forget myself on a regular basis in order to attend to the other selves in my vicinity. It means living so that ‘I'm only human’ does not become an excuse for anything. It means receiving the human condition as blessing and not curse, in all its achingly frail and redemptive reality.” Our fabulous cover star La La Anthony expands on this in her interview with Danita Chantel on page 82. What I loved most about highlighting her was her warm demeanor and welcoming sense of humor. I also want to note how incredibly lovely it was working with Sara Gore for this issue. What a kind and selfaware woman! Be sure to check out what she’s up to in her interview with BELLA’s Entertainment Editor Alexandra Anastasio on page 78. In closing, one thing I’ll share with you from my personal journey is that the next time you find yourself in the middle of a storm and everything is at its absolute worst, take a moment to be grateful. It will get better. With much love and wishing you the best holiday season,

Vanessa Coppes

behind the scenes

our

It was such fun meeting La La Anthony and working with her talented team. The Style Duo handpicked fabulous dresses from our previous cover stars, CD Greene and Marc Bouwer. La La looked stunning + her laughter…so infectious it brightened up the rainy morning we spent shooting at Hotel Hendricks! Thank you, Renee MarshallMcKinley (KYSS + Colorstreet), Elizabeth + Jordan Osborne (All Things Divine Divas + Monat), Vivian Nacionales (Nacionales Nails), + Jillian Coburn (author of “My Ugly Truth”)—just a few of the amazing ladies from ETTWomen who gifted La La some of their products at our shoot. Thank you, Danita for helping make the connection to our cover star, Sarah at Hotel Hendricks for your assistance, and of course, Jessica C., Gina + Jessica L., who make our cover stories shine!

The winter and holiday seasons are all about layering, but that can get boring. Monochromatic looks are a simple yet striking way to make a statement by keeping one color in mind and playing with texture and patterns featuring corduroy, knitwear, silk, and more. Silver and greys are among of the most popular tones this season, so take those separates and pair them up. You may be surprised by the stylish outcome you create!

FASHION

HAPPENINGS By Amanda Mactas

SOFTIES

The cozy brand that jumped to prominence after Oprah featured it on her list of favorite things has recently added to its stock of pajamas, nightgowns, and loungewear with the introduction of an accessory line! Hats, blankets, scarves and snuggle jumpers are out just in time for the cold winter, with prices ranging from $14-$75. SoftiesPJs.com

BROOKLYN

BLEU VINTAGE

COVRY

The female-founded eyeglass brand known for its signature Elevated Fit brings together comfort and hand-crafted high fashion in the eyewear space. The company recently launched new 70s-inspired styles, including the Coxa and Alya sunglasses. Both retail for $155 and feature retro silhouettes for the modern woman. ShopCovry.com

Located at the gorgeous One World Trade, this vintage shop debuted its new storefront during New York Fashion Week, showcasing carefully curated vintage jewelry and purses. With prices ranging from $25 to $1,500, there is truly something for everyone. Designer finds from YSL, Chanel, and Givenchy are just some of the treasures you can find within these fun walls. One World Trade Center, Balcony Level C1, BrooklynBleu.com

MEASURE & MADE

SWEATER

We instantly fell in love with Measure & Made when it launched earlier this year, and now the brand has struck gold by offering extended sizes so all women can enjoy their clothing. The company specializes in custom-fit pants, which are determined through its simple Fitlogic sizing system. Simply answer questions like your typical pant size, where you tend to gain and lose weight, and current problem areas with pants, and you’ll discover your ideal pant shape. Now offering sizes 0 through 28, you can score well-fitting pants for an affordable price. MeasureandMade.com

HOUND

Ugly Christmas sweaters have gotten an upgrade with the launch of the cutest sweater brand, Sweater Hound. Founder Amy Fohr was looking for a fun and adorable way to “wear” her pet, and after years in the retail space, decided to launch her own company. Sweater Hound will cartoonize pictures of your pup onto knitted sweaters, hoodies, or pants, giving you a one-of-a-kind snuggly piece of clothing to rep your dog. SweaterHound.com

5 steps to fabulous

Inside & Out Choices for Living Beautifully, By Vanessa Coppes

You receive from the world what you give to the world. The point I, too, have learned is not to pay back kindness but to pass it on.

Any act of appreciation affirms our connection to each other. It validates us and also expands who we are in the world. The next time you find yourself surrounded by darkness in the middle of the storm and everything is at its absolute worst, take a moment to give thanks. It will get better. I’m feeling grateful for so much in my personal and professional life, including the opportunity to share news of brands, people, and companies that will truly make your life more fab!

UNIQUE HAIR CONCEPTS OF NEW YORK After watching Flora Fuentes, founder of Unique Hair Concepts (UHC), on an episode of BELLA TV last spring, I began to take my haircare quite seriously. About two years ago, I began to notice rapid hair loss, to the point where I was wearing hats and bandanas constantly. I even considered wearing a wig to avoid looking at myself in pictures! However, after three months of treatment at UHC, the change in my tresses is quite dramatic! Go check out my before and after on BellaMag.co. UniqueHairConcepts.com

JANENE’S NIGHTTIME

BEAUTY ROUTINE Our Beauty Director Janene Mascarella shares her favorite pm essentials to help beautify amid the holiday hustle and bustle. When it comes to taking care of my skin and hair, there is nothing routine about the time I spend at night. In fact, whether I have two minutes or two hours, it’s more like a ritual to me. Sleep is when our bodies go into repair and rebuild mode—that’s why they call it “beauty sleep”—so I love to do what I can to give it a little boost while I snooze. Here are the bedtime besties I turn to throughout the week to help me get the skin and hair of my dreams.

SLIP SILK PINK PILLOWCASE

It’s pretty much an eight-hour beauty treatment every night. We spend a third of our lives in bed. Silk fibers are significantly less absorbent than many other fibers, so they can help keep your skin’s moisture and expensive face and hair products where they belong—on your face and hair. This pillow also helps to reduce friction, which can reduce stretching and tugging on delicate facial skin. It also keeps sleep creases on your face and bed-head at bay. It’s so worth the splurge…I will never part with this pillow! $85, Slip.com

By Janene Mascarella RICARDO ROJAS BAÑO DE CREMA MASK

This mighty hair mask is an intense blend of essential vitamins, minerals, oils, and natural silicon that nourishes and regenerates your hair, moisturizes the scalp, and restores the elasticity and shine of your hair. I leave this one overnight once a week (religiously!), and it leaves my locks looking so healthy. $55, RicardoRojas.com

THE ART OF BODY BRUSHING By Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist and Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skincare

Keeping skin soft and smooth gets much harder this time of year. At the most basic level, caring for our skin is super important. It’s our largest organ and responsible for most of our detoxifying needs. At my New York and Los Angeles spas, our main focus is helping our clients achieve healthy, glowing skin, from head to toe. While a healthy diet and exercise are vital to reduce the appearance of dull, uneven skin, dry brushing can aid in the quest to even out the look of your skin, and is one of the easiest things you can incorporate into your beauty routine.

WHAT EXACTLY IS DRY BRUSHING? It involves the process of using a bristle brush against the skin to exfoliate dead skin cells off the surface and enhance blood flow. Dry brushing is an excellent way to exfoliate dry winter skin and help stimulate your nervous system, which promotes feelings of energy and invigoration. It also helps to unclog pores and increase blood circulation to promote lymphatic flow and drainage. Dry brushing does multiple things for the skin’s appearance, which is why I like it so much. It aids in collagen production, which thickens skin to lessen the appearance of fat cells while oxygenating skin cells for a brighter skin tone. By dry brushing your skin regularly, you are increasing circulation, minimizing the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks, improving texture, and promoting blood flow so skin cells can turn over and renew. Sweeping away dead skin cells, diminishing the appearance of cellulite, and stimulating circulation are the building blocks of smoother and firmer skin around the jiggly bits of the body–thighs, bum, and love handles. This is an easy, natural remedy to tighten the skin, eliminate toxins, and allow the skin to breathe.

HOW TO DO IT Every morning, I reach for my Ritual Brush, which is made with natural materials, so it’s safe to use on the entire body. It comes with a detachable brush head for added mobility and a long brush handle that allows you to remove dead skin in those hard-to-reach places. To do it yourself, begin at your toes and work your way up using long, firm strokes toward your heart. This is most important– always brush toward the heart, never in circles. Dry brushing should always be gentle and never break or irritate the skin. You should spend roughly three to five minutes exfoliating your body before hopping in the tub. Never dry brush while your body is wet! Massaging the body in the morning, with a firm bristle brush before bathing, helps energize your body for the day and is when your body reaps the most benefits. I’ve heard from clients that results can be felt in as little as the first week.

Activate and glow at home with your own Ritual Brush. $30, JoannaVargas.com 31

UPTOWN GLAMOUR

meets

DOWNTOWN

EDGE at the New

HOTEL HENDRICKS By Jennifer DeCillis

Hotel Hendricks debuts in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, boasting luxury accommodations, elevated Latin cuisine, and two rooftop venues. The new hotel hotspot has curated a space where uptown glamour and downtown edge converge, embracing rock-and-roll glam in everything from rooftop cocktails to rooms with luxe fittings. Fortuna Realty Group, founded in 1984 by Morris Moinian, introduces a stylish new addition to its celebrated collection of Manhattan hotels, which include Hotel Hugo, Hotel Henri, and Hotel Hayden. Hotel Hendricks’ urban oasis, located in the heart of New York’s Garment District, is conveniently situated steps away from Herald Square, Bryant Park, and Fifth Avenue.

“We’re thrilled to offer travelers another dose of our signature hospitality style in the heart of New York City,” says Moinian. “Hotel Hendricks embodies our commitment to bringing first-class service, upscale accommodations, and creatively designed common spaces to one of the world’s most buzzing destinations. It’s an undeniably welcome addition to our growing portfolio.” The 176-room property features eclectic interiors by Los Angelesbased designer Marcello Pozzi. Industrial bones with a wild side, the Hendricks Hotel is set against a backdrop of concrete and exposed ceilings. The design features a number of signature elements that can be found throughout the property, including copper appointments, mahogany wood, live cherry blossoms, splashes of color, and various animal prints. The juxtaposition of eye-catching embellishments set against an industrial backdrop exudes lavishness, while also maintaining a contemporary style. As guests enter through the front doors, which remain open to evoke a resort-like open-air lobby, they pass under a unique concrete awning, standing out among the other facades on the block. Once inside, guests are greeted by the front desk on their right and the restaurant’s bar on the left, a layout intended to create a synergy between the bar visitors and hotel guests. In the common spaces, colorfully hand-blown Murano glass chandeliers hang alongside contrasting dark-colored geometric light fixtures. Both the lobby and the rooftop bloom with cherry blossom trees, serving as a motif of the hotel’s logo—an “H” constructed of cherry blossom branches. Taking a cue from the city’s strong fashion industry roots and offering a subtle nod to Moinian’s background in the garment industry, each guest room is designed featuring a vibrant animal print motif, warm mahogany paneling, and opulent light fixtures. 44

Serving crave-worthy cuisine with simplicity and style, Hendricks introduces its Latin-inspired restaurant, Paloma, helmed by the acclaimed Chef PJ Calapa. With Latin cues andE mpire State views, the flavorful pan-Latin cuisine and tropical libations at Paloma spread throughout the entire Hotel Hendricks lobby. Calapa focuses on the bold flavors he grew up with in the border town of Brownsville, Texas, concocting a menu that pulls inspiration from a mix of Mexican, Argentinian, and Peruvian flavor profiles with dishes and cocktails intended to share. With a bar opposite the reception area, Paloma’s formal seating and additional sidewalk seats are accompanied by an outdoor patio accented with fountains, lush greenery, twinkle lights, and a custom Inca mural hand-painted by Peruvian painter Julio Granados. Twenty-seven stories above Paloma, guests will find the hotel’s two rooftop bars. Hendricks Rooftop, spanning the entirety of the 26th floor, features whimsical decor and floor-to-ceiling windows, showcasing stunning views of downtown Manhattan from the Empire State Building to the Freedom Tower. Up a short staircase, guests emerge onto an open-air, outdoor rooftop deck featuring a “garage bar” that offers up craft cocktails and a variety of bar snacks. An experience fit for the king or queen of the concrete jungle, Hendricks’ glam guest rooms, luxe amenities, and exotic gastronomy blend together for a safari-chic retreat destination in the epicenter of The City of Dreams.

With Sophisticated Style & Hearts of Gold,

The Nicotra Group is Here to

“Outsmart Manhattan” By Jennifer DeCillis

R

ichard and Lois Nicotra are taking the real estate development world to a new level in Staten Island, NY. Their savvy and sophisticated spaces “outsmart Manhattan” and put NYC’s real estate prices to shame. What makes them most successful, however, isn’t their laundry list of properties and new developments, but rather their dedication and commitment to their community and to each other. Sustaining a 40-year marriage is just an inkling into their determination to build lasting relationships, and that doesn’t go unseen by their fellow Staten Islanders. In addition to creating jobs, hotels, and office buildings that are both beautiful and profitable, the couple also provides grants and scholarships to The Nicotra Group’s employees, as well as the children and grandchildren of their employees. With that same dedication, the couple knew that through their latest venture, Corporate Commons Three, they would continue to give back.

sophisticated spaces | beauty & benevolence Corporate Commons Three is an eight-story, 330,000-square-foot, LEED Silver Certified, class-A office building, complete with luxury finishes and amenities, providing 2,500 jobs on Staten Island. This exquisite building will feature a vineyard, pedestrian promenade, town square, rooftop garden, and be filled with large scale, original sculptures and thousands of flowers. The rooftop garden is not just a unique event space, but will also serve as a completely “green” haven for growing organic food and an instrument in giving back to Staten Island. Similarly, the building’s onsite, social enterprise restaurant, “Pienza,” will donate 100% of its profits to local charities, following the model of the COMMONS café, which donates all profits to charities on Staten Island. Recognizing the importance of an environmentally responsible development, the Nicotras will also donate three acres of land to be preserved and gifted to the community, so students and the public can visit and learn about the environment, preservation, and the historical significance of this land. As if the promising new developments of The Nicotra Group aren’t grandiose enough, the couple’s coveted wedding venue and gorgeous event space, Above, is as successful as ever. The stunning rooftop wedding and event space at the Hilton Garden Inn showcases panoramic views of Staten Island’s four bridges and the Manhattan skyline. The 9,600-square-foot, indoor/outdoor Above Rooftop, with its open air terrace, heated draped cabanas and firepits, offers a modern cocktail hour and features upscale lounge seating, an open kitchen, and a dramatic, 50-foot-long, marble bar–all illuminated by fiber-optic bubble lights. The guest rooms and suites at the Inn were designed in response to guests seeking upscale amenities and well-appointed suites for their wedding day. The Nicotras personally ensure that all weddings at Above are memorable, and the start of a couple’s honeymoon, unforgettable. Here’s what the couple told BELLA about their career, community, and how they balance being married and working side-by-side for 40 years.

How did you get started in the hotel and real estate development business?

Richard: I think, in a way, I was in this business since I was in high school. I was the first president 48

of the student government at my high school, Susan Wagner. I organized events to get students more involved. We voted for the school colors, and we created a really strong sense of school spirit. Creating a feeling of excitement, welcome, and engagement is really what hospitality is all about. As for real estate, when I started my first Everything Yogurt business and leased space on Broadway in downtown Manhattan, I became a tenant. As my company expanded and we started franchising our concept worldwide, the mall presence became a valuable part of our brand. My experience as a tenant was, largely, a miserable one where the relationship was all about the landlord being in control. I vowed that if I ever became a landlord, I would treat my tenants like royalty—and Lois and I do exactly that.

You both have gone above and beyond for your community and your tenants. What are some of the things that really make the difference?

We know all of our Corporate Park of Staten Island tenants by name, we know their business, and they call us directly. We also host events to show them our appreciation. I built my first building in 1993 on South Avenue, but even before that, when I purchased a building in Port Richmond, I found that by just planting flowers in front of the building, painting it, and fixing the area around the building made such an impact on the neighborhood. And other surrounding businesses started to do the same. Real estate development is, in a very real sense, community development. Like in hospitality, you’re giving people an experience. It’s all connected.

Having been married for 40 years, has working together strengthened your relationship?

Lois: Richard and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in June, but we joke that because we work together and spend each day together, it’s like we are married for 80 years—in a good way! In all seriousness though, we each bring different strengths to our work life and our relationship, and thankfully, we have always been like-minded in our goals. We often come back to the lyrics in a favorite song: “How do you keep the music playing?” Creating a business and sustaining it—especially one that never closes—is not an easy task, but we have approached our work-life in a way that is unique to us, and it suits us well. We keep pace with each other, handle challenges together,

49

sophisticated spaces | beauty & benevolence

and we also know when to step back and enjoy a dinner out or get tickets to a Broadway show to take a little breath. And probably one of the nicest things Richard ever said was that even though we are together seven days a week and 24 hours a day, sometimes it just isn’t enough. I couldn’t agree more.

Tell us about the charity work you do within the community and why it is so important in sustaining the growth and success of Staten Island.

Richard: It’s simple. We love Staten Island. We grew up here, we built our businesses here, and we live here. Most of our employees live here and our Staten Island community—our schools, youth organizations—is important to them, too. There are a lot of successful people off Staten Island giving their money to do good things, but we wanted our success to benefit the borough we love. Our COMMONS café, a social enterprise eatery where we give 100% of the profits to do good things on Staten Island—is on track to gift $1 million by the end of 2020. We will open a second social enterprise eatery early next year with the same mission and business model called Pienza. Our dedication to building our community has caught the eye of the Newman’s Own Foundation and Facebook, who named us “Community Builders.” Strong nonprofits make for a strong community. Staten Island should be known as a respected, educated, healthy, green, and clean borough. We are a small town in the big city, and while people see our businesses as fueling the local economy, we know our nonprofit organizations fuel our community. 51

GERALDINE “GERRY”

Viggiani

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Clinical Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Certified In Perinatal Mental Health Lotus Blossom Psychotherapy EATONTOWN, NJ LotusBlossomPsychotherapy.com MY BUSINESS: I utilize my knowledge and

expertise treating clients at my private practice, Lotus Blossom Psychotherapy. My specialties and passion are helping clients who have experienced any type of trauma, including birth trauma or perinatal mood disorders, like postpartum depression and anxiety and addiction. I know how severely these challenges can impact my clients’ lives, so I utilize evidencebased therapies that provide much needed relief from their symptoms, leave their traumas in the past, or achieve long-term sobriety. HOW IT BEGAN: Ever since I was a teen, I was

always that person who was there to listen to and provide feedback for my friend’s problems. So it made perfect sense that I would go into this field. I believe it is a calling, and so I held on to the dream while I raised my children. When life allowed, I went back to school with the end goal of opening my own private practice.

MOST REWARDING: It is incredibly

rewarding to play a part in a client’s recovery. Being a witness to another human’s growth and healing is just amazing. In addition, many therapists forget that private practice is a business first and so nurturing that role through networking, financial planning, and organizational skill sets are roles I also enjoy. The result is a thriving practice. GRATEFUL FOR: Every day that my clients

open their hearts and minds and allow me to guide them through the therapeutic process. It is awe-inspiring to witness their strengths and growth. Their strength also allows me to reflect on the gratitude for things big and small in my own life—family and friends, an amazing career, my dogs, my home, and the freedom to live the life I love. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: I found

what I like to do and never gave up working toward that goal. 61

ELIZABETH

Feudale

Licensed Esthetician and Licensed Massage Therapist, Owner/Creator Décolleté Skin and Wellness MORGANVILLE, NJ DecolleteSkinAndWellness.com MY BUSINESS: We are a boutique skin and wellness

studio that focuses on creating customized facial and body treatments that promote health and balance within our clients’ body, mind, spirit, and last but certainly not least, skin. HOW IT BEGAN: I have always dreamt of owning

my own business. As dorky as it sounds, I had the name Décolleté floating around my head since I was in school way back in 2006! In early 2018, my hairdresser and I were having a conversation about our careers, and I had casually mentioned always wanting to have my own skin care studio. Immediately, her response was, “I have a room if you ever want it.” I left there that day not only with a beautiful new hairdo, but also an opportunity and lots to think about. I actually let the idea float around my head for about five months, and then I started to research what I wanted to offer, and what would give me an edge in the industry and it finally and it came to me: Integrating CBD into my practice. The desire to be a leader in bringing into CBD skin care, finding an incredible skin care line (Color Up), and knowing the benefits of using this ground-breaking ingredient in my treatments became my driving force. In September 2018, I officially formed Décolleté. MOST REWARDING: Honestly, the greatest, most

rewarding part of doing what I do is helping people look and feel well every day. Doing the work we do, you tend to develop a unique relationship with each and every soul that walks through the door. That’s pretty neat. The fact that people choose us and trust in what we do is priceless. The compliments are always nice too!

GRATEFUL FOR: This calling that found

me. The fact that I can help people attain their goals and am able to take part in their health and wellness journey is one of my life’s greatest treasures. I am grateful to have a career where I can balance work and family life, because as a working mom that could be tricky. I am also so grateful to work beside the most amazing women I know. I’m a lucky girl! SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Being

authentic, being knowledgeable, and most important, being humble. I am filled to the brim with gratitude to be where I am right now. 62

DENISE

Cesare

Founder and Owner, T SUIT® Fits Every Body To A T® STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK T-Suit.com MY BUSINESS: I created my exclusive designs and selected fabulous fabric that really

focuses on the fit. I love helping women feel beautiful and sexy in my swimwear designs. I also developed my own organic summer travel essential products to compliment my swimwear line. HOW IT BEGAN: I created something different out of necessity and created a

makeshift swim idea. It was my first prototype that I would wear to swim club because I didn’t want to cover up all the time when I got out of the pool with my son.

MY MISSION: Body positivity! It’s not

about your size, it’s fit that matters. My products and designs enhance your body. TARGET CUSTOMER: Women who feel

self-conscious about their bodies, and who do not enjoy shopping for swimwear. WHAT I STRONGLY STAND AGAINST: Not embracing all body types,

body shaming, and feeling less about yourself because of your size. MOST REWARDING: It is an amazing

feeling that I can help women feel good about themselves! SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: My

swimmable T SUIT Top/Dress solves the issue of covering up. It is a beautiful addition to enhance a swimsuit with confidence to even wear a bikini top. I AM THANKFUL FOR: My husband

and son for their support and believing in my dream, my mentors that I am learning from, and my friends who also believe in T SUIT and are cheering me on.

BELLA boss

JENE

Luciani

Bestselling Author, On-air Contributor, Brand Ambassador, Bra Guru SCHENECTADY NY JeneLuciani.com

MY BUSINESS: I built a brand around

bras and body confidence. Literally, I sell support! I am your “bra-blem” solver and breast friend. But seriously, I help millions of women via national TV news and talk show appearances, personal appearances, and regularly on QVC as SOMA’s brand ambassador. I’ve also written hundreds of articles and a bestselling book about how to find the right bra, now in its second printing. I did the first ever TEDTalk on the topic, and have doled out advice on “The Dr. Oz Show” and many others. HOW IT BEGAN: I was a style

editor at a magazine and was assigned an article on bras and foundations garments. It was shortly after Oprah did her famous “Bra intervention” episode and everyone was talking about it. I realized that there was a lack of resources for women (social media was just getting started), and I thought about writing a guidebook for women on bras. That turned into a beautiful 225-page illustrated book with every piece of information under the sun. “The Bra Photography by Dollface Studios NY

Book” was published by BenBella Books in 2009 and also carried in many bra retailers, including Dillard’s and Lord & Taylor. It was printed in a second edition in 2017. MOST REWARDING: I hear from women all the time [about] how

appreciative they are to have an advocate for something so personal and so prevalent in their lives! It’s gratifying being able to help other women like myself. THE SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Perseverance. No matter how

many setbacks occur, I keep on going. I never give up. And, I go with my gut. I feel that is important. If it doesn’t feel right, I don’t do it. I do what feeds my soul. HOW I HANDLED THE NAYSAYERS: When I started this journey,

64

many people laughed about a “book about bras” and didn’t understand why it was so important to me. That motivated me even more. Do what you feel is right and you are passionate about, and you’ll never go wrong!

LISA MARIE

Latino

Founder and Executive Producer of Long Shot Productions; Co-Creator, Executive Producer, and Host of “Hip New Jersey” JERSEY CITY, NJ LongShotProd.tv HipNewJersey.com LisaMarieLatino.com

MY BUSINESS: Long Shot Productions is

a full-service video production company. We specialize in all types of corporate, commercial and entertainment production. We work with clients on every aspect of their vision, from initial planning to the finished product. Additionally, we produce all the video content for “Hip New Jersey,” a lifestyle website and local television show that showcases the best the Garden State has to offer. HOW IT BEGAN: In 2009, when digital content

was becoming mainstream, I realized I didn’t need to work for a big network to be creative or wait around to have a decision-maker finally get around to choosing me from an on-air gig. Personal and professional circumstances pushed me to forge my own path and let my talents shine my way. THE SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Owning a

business has taught me to “not sweat the small stuff.” Literally every single day of my life brings a different adventure, a new challenge to overcome. Learning how to problem-solve in a calm and succinct way has helped me in true pressure-packed situations. I try to treat everyone I encounter with the upmost respect. Whether it’s the CEO of a Fortune 500 company or a production assistant, I give them the time and attention they deserve. That’s something

you can’t fake; I’m a curious person by nature and I’m genuinely interested by their journey. I’m sure others can sense that enthusiasm. I tend to be attentive and nurturing to my staff. I always joke that I’m the one getting the interns coffee! You don’t get anywhere by yelling like a lunatic; you just throw the balance of the office off. Instead of just pointing out mistakes, I offer solutions on how to do things an alternative way. Let them be part of the solution. A lot of my clients truly become family, and we tend to get a lot of repeat business. I think it’s because we display a fierce work ethic, vast knowledge in the space, and efficiently deliver the results they are looking for. 65

HOW IT BEGAN: I have always been entrepreneurial

as I grew up traveling around the world with my father promoting World Cup soccer events and athletes. Whether it was drafting proposals, coordinating hotels, executing game-day logistics, or traveling to South America on scouting trips, the key principles of integrity, eye contact, and the value of strong relationships were deeply ingrained in my mind as pillars for excellent business practices. I saw this was lacking at many companies and it made for a less pleasant work environment where people referred to their day-to-day as simply a “job.” I knew that I wanted to do something meaningful where I could wake up every day with a passion to help companies grow and do so in a more human and personal manner. MOST GRATEFUL FOR: The ability to only work with

people and companies I admire and believe in. Throughout my work, I have developed incredible friendships that cross over into work relationships; it’s magic when you can have both, because you care about what you do and want to win together. WHY IS TEAMWORK SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

I am a two-time NCAA All-American coxswain for rowing and a national champion in both Canada and the US. Having competed at Princeton on the women’s rowing team, I learned the values of true leadership and team-building, and what most people don’t understand or know how to do—extract the best from every individual with whom you surround yourself. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Remaining authentic and developing strong teams. I am fortunate enough to have worked with my colleagues at SMACK! Media long term because we have built a team where we trust and care about each other relentlessly. It sounds cliché, but teamwork truly does make the dream work. MARCY

Cortez

President, LAI Financial Group LLC FREEHOLD, NJ laifgnj.com

MY BUSINESS: LAI Financial Group provides accounting/bookkeeping

services on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis to small businesses so that have all the financial tools they need to profitably operate. Our goal is to service our clients in a professional, efficient, and cost-effective manner, always keeping our motto to reduce overhead, increase profits, and improve cash flow as the foundation of our business. HOW IT BEGAN: After working in corporate accounting for more

than 25 years, I decided it was time to devote my knowledge and talents to my own business. I am a certified QuickBooks specialist with extensive accounting, management, and human resources experience. LAI Financial Group LLC grew out of my need to share my financial and business acumen with the community.

WHY OUTSOURCING MAKES SENSE: Small business

entrepreneurs like to think they can do it all, but even the most organized business owners sometimes need some help running their businesses. To get that help, many business owners have turned to outsourcing. While the word may conjure up images of sending work overseas, small business owners can use outsourcing to their advantage by giving various functions to companies that have the professional expertise to handle them. Business owners have turned to outsourcing to handle bookkeeping, accounting, payroll and human resources, and marketing, among other areas of operation. Outsourcing these functions allows business owners to hand over the reins to experts who are familiar with those areas of business. This gives the entrepreneur a chance to focus on what they do best—the actual running of their business. MOST REWARDING: I love the opportunity to help a business

owner see the light at the end of the tunnel, whether it’s setting up their financial record keeping system or showing them where they can reduce their expenses and increase profits or that they are actually showing a profit after a period of losses. GRATEFUL FOR: The wonderful relationships and friendships I’ve

made over the past seven+ years. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Since I am a solopreneur, I make

my own hours. While this affords me the opportunity to make a nail appointment at 10:30am on a Thursday, it also gives me the flexibility to be there at 10:30pm to answer a client’s question or calm them down when they’ve received a letter from the IRS. Customer service 24/7 is what sets LAI Financial Group LLC apart from the competition.

WHAT ARE YOU

Grateful for? VANESSA COPPES

My passions—both personally and professionally. I love what I do, and having the opportunity to help other writers enhance and share their work is a gift. I’m also glad to have found an interest— working out—that stimulates my body and my soul, and has allowed me to forge new friendships, face challenges head-on, and show my daughters that there is always a way to push yourself, defy your insecurities, build upon your strengths, and be better. MICHELE DINARDO EDITOR, LOS ANGELES

Possibilities, open minds, and second chances! Our world is changing so quickly and we all have to be extremely nimble. I’m grateful for opportunities to stretch my thinking and contribute in ways I never thought I could to my work, my loved ones, the world, and my community. I’m also intensely grateful for my family, and especially for my brother, whose life changed dramatically with a car accident in 2003, but who keeps us positive through it all.

CEO & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

When I asked our team to write about what they are most grateful for, the intention was to go beyond the mundane—“stuff.” I personally could have literally written about every obvious thing: my family, my friends, my colleagues, this magazine: a dream realized. But the truth is that all of these things connect to the one thing I’ve remained resilient in: My faith. My faith has always guided me + saved me many times. It has kept me out of trouble, helped me stay true to myself, kept me safe from danger even from myself, and it has helped me discover and believe in the power of something I never really knew: Hope. #KeepItMoving

I love being able to share strategies that helped me grow and become successful with them and watch their businesses grow. 68

I have an amazing family.

JENNIFER DECILLIS

I am grateful for my mother, Lisa—my best friend and my daily inspiration in life. More importantly, I am grateful for what she has instilled in me and for making me the woman I am today. Her selflessness in providing for her family is unwavering, and she continuously encourages the importance of chasing your dreams, while doing anything it takes to help you achieve them. I am eternally grateful for her irrevocable love, acceptance, and support, and for showing me what it means to be a strong, compassionate, brave, and ambitious woman. Thank you, Momma, I love you!

I am grateful for my family and friends, who have been a source of light, inspiration, support, and love during the great times and the hard times. I feel blessed to have people around me, both personally and professionally, who are uplifting and enjoy my success, which brings me deep joy and inspires me to continue on my path. Throughout the stages of my life I have had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people who live around the world. Now I have a global network of friends that I can reach out to and visit, and it’s truly a gift that I cherish. I am grateful for God and the creative force of life where I find miracles both big and small guiding me on this journey, and I always hope to bring joy and success to others through my work and everyday interactions. I am grateful for my house in the Poconos as a chance to escape and relax. Less than a block away from my house is this beautiful peaceful view of Lake Wallenpaupack with a bench by the grounds of Paupack Hills Golf Course. I love to sit on the bench and just watch the boats on the water. It’s especially beautiful to watch the sunset here. This spot helps me reflect on what I have to be thankful for in life. I am especially thankful for my family and friends who are always there to support me. Life doesn’t get any better than this! ALEXANDRA ANASTASIO ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

Reinvention. I am grateful for the fact that at any stage in life, it’s possible to reinvent yourself. The best laid plans often go astray (something I learned firsthand), but we have the power to change course and take a new direction. Years ago, I put my passion for writing on the backburner but after a life-changing event, I took a long look at where I was and where I wanted to be. This “a-ha” moment became the motivation to now bring that passion to the forefront. That’s the beauty of reinvention—it’s never too late to rewrite your second act! JANENE MASCARELLA

My mom gave me life, but it’s what came after the start of life that I’m grateful for. That woman has stood by my side throughout it all. She’s my rock, my fiercest defender, my loudest cheerleader. She has supported my career without question, taking care of my kids when I am making the world a more beautiful place, going on long road trips with me to distant locations, and running lastminute errands for lashes. Throughout it all, she has always told and shown me that I make her proud. Everything I am…all that I stand for—it started with my mom. She’s my first best friend, and I couldn’t imagine a day in this life without her by my side.

My parents! Everything that I am— mother, wife, sister, friend, writer—and all of my successes and triumphs are thanks to my mom and dad, Carol and Sonny Sumampow. They have shown me what unconditional love really means. I speak to them every single day on the phone, and I am so grateful to have such loving, kind, and supportive parents in my life. MINDY GURA AND PAULA ORLAN COVER AND CELEBRITY STYLISTS

Whenever we are asked what we are most thankful for during the holiday season, we don’t hesitate with an answer. Our three amazing boys, Ryan and Kevin (Paula’s sons) and Joshua (Mindy’s son), are our pride and joy. We are so grateful every day of the year for them. They are smart, friendly, and kind young men. We enjoy spending time together, going to concerts, sporting events, and trips to Florida. However, our sons do not share our passion for fashion—we are just happy if they choose clothes that match! #MomOfBoys

My health…without health, nothing in life matters. Our lives are so fragile, and I truly believe we need to treat our bodies as temples. Money can always be made, jobs can always be found, friendships can always be mended. Many things in life are fixable, but sometimes your health cannot be. Treat your mind and body right. Just waking up with a grateful and healthy mindset will set the tone for the rest of your day!

The Woman Behind the Reality TV Personality:

71

getting to know retty in pink, Kameron Westcott brightened up the studio as she strode in for her interview, wearing head-to-toe hot pink in a shade only she could pull off. Kameron has a selfproclaimed, obsessive love for the color pink and has made her motto “blonde by birth, pink by choice,” a phrase that helps to convey not only her fashion choices, but also her personality—both of which are undeniably bright and bubbly. Meeting, reading about, and more importantly, interviewing a reality television star can sometimes take the mystery out of getting to know someone, as so much of their life is shown on TV. But with Kameron Westcott of “Real Housewives of Dallas,” there was so much more to learn. Growing up in Montecito, California, Kameron traded her Cali roots for Texas life when she attended Southern Methodist University. Soon after, she met her husband, Court Westcott. The Westcott name is a prominent one in Dallas, and her wide social circle is just a small indication of her infectious and compassionate personality. Residing in the exclusive neighborhood of Highland Park with her husband and two children, Kameron is the living embodiment of “the Dallas way.” Kameron is also the creator and founder of SparkleDog premium dog food, which combined her love for animals and her passion for pink. Noticing that the dog food industry had overlooked the purchasing power of women, Kameron created packaging that would appeal to women using bold pink colors, heartshaped kibble, and an easy-to-carry bag. Kameron has donated and raised over $400,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization near and dear to her heart, and continues to donate $1 for every bag sold. When Kameron’s best friend of 30 years, Kaitlin, was diagnosed with breast cancer, Kameron was inspired to help in any way she could. Besides being by Kaitlin’s side throughout her battle with cancer, Kameron began raising funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Her business savvy and dedication to taking care of others paved the way for Kameron to create the brand with such a personal and charitable significance.

BELLA sat down with Kameron to get to know the multifaceted woman, wife, mother, and entrepreneur behind the reality TV personality. 72

Tell our readers about your transition from California to Texas and what the Texas life has been like and how it has changed you.

Before I moved to Texas, I had never seen a designer bag. My husband says I was born to live in Dallas, but just didn’t know it—and it’s true. Growing up in a small beach town in California, fashion and bling just did not exist. In Dallas, however, there are no mountains or beaches, so people spend a lot more time, money, and effort on their appearances. I often joke that I chose to attend college at SMU [Southern Methodist University in Dallas] because it was the first time I had ever seen an indoor mall!

You are very involved in charity work, especially the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Was this spark to give back inspired by your best friend who battled breast cancer?

Dallas, in general, is a very “charityfocused” city, and my husband’s family has always been active supporters of charity work. With Susan G. Komen Foundation, I became involved because my close childhood friend, Kaitlin, who had fought breast cancer twice and who was in the middle of treatment at the time, inspired me. I am so proud of her and all the women who fight this devastating disease. Also, it didn’t hurt that Susan G. Komen shares my love of the color pink!

You’re a fashionista and a savvy businesswoman. Tell us how you tied the two together with your dog food line, SparkleDog.

I started SparkleDog for one reason, for my beloved Yorkie of 16 years, Louis, who I am saddened to say passed away recently. I really wanted to make food for him that was the best quality—nutrient-rich, grain free and gluten free—because he was such a picky eater and was always watching his weight.

Besides being a reality TV star, you are also a wife, mother, and active community member. Tell us about your daily life and how you balance these different aspects of your personal life.

My regular life is so hectic, I should be on a reality show. Oh wait, I am already on one! Trying to have it all can be really tough, and you are never going to be perfect, but the saying is true, “The secret to having it all is knowing you already have it.” I just try to be in the moment and focus on quality in terms of time. I love being a mom, and it always comes first, but I also get so much fulfillment helping others, as well as animals.

Victoria Kühne Victoria Kühne wants us to take charge of our bodies and experiment more. Yet the Mexican beauty is not advocating pure chaos and debauchery. What the GRAMMY-nominated producer, artist, and entrepreneur stands for is female empowerment.

As the daughter of two music producers, music has always been in Victoria’s blood. Growing up surrounded by creatives, she has always chosen to aim for the stars. But rising to the top as a female producer wasn’t easy. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, her male counterparts constantly questioned Victoria’s leadership. “That’s why I eventually changed the name of the company to Victoria Records, so there was no more questioning that a woman was in front of one of the top recording studios in Latin America’ she explains. “I never got asked again by any male executive to call one of my brothers to give me the green light.” While talking with Victoria, I couldn’t help but sit up straighter. It is truly inspiring to meet extraordinary people who overcome odds and strive to empower others. During this candid interview with BELLA, the star shares insight on her music, success, passions, and, of course, her most scandalous secret: How she went from pushing forward in a male-dominated industry to dominating the industry. 74

Empowering Women

By Rose Aljure Photography by Sofi Mak

To begin, tell us about yourself and your background.

I was born and raised in Mexico in a very strict Catholic household. I was the only daughter and the youngest. I have three older brothers and grew up with a lot of rules and limits. In very big contrast to this scenario, I also grew up in the music industry. I was just 11 when my parents built the recording studios I now run, and I basically grew up surrounded by creatives. The first thing I did as a girl when I finished school every day was head down to the studios. People around me were always writing and producing for other artists, and I eventually joined in. That led to some amazing things for me, including a Grammy nomination for a project I co-produced and other really cool experiences. Right now, I’m living a new chapter of creating my own sound after so many years of doing collaborations and working on other artists’ projects. This is me finally being vulnerable with my art and sharing my vision as an artist.

Would you say your roots have influenced your desire to empower women through your work? As a Latin American woman myself, I often felt like I was growing up in a maledominated culture.

Oh my God, yes—100%! For me, the craziest part was after I took over the recording studios, started my label and publisher, and was running them on my own—and doing a pretty good job at it. Somehow, male music executives would come negotiate deals with me and at the end of the meetings after we’ve reached an agreement, they’d be like, ‘So are you just going to call your dad or one of your older brothers to give you the green light?’ They expected me to need a male figure to green light those deals I had already closed with them. They were insecure that a girl was actually the person at the end of the negotiation and that’s where it stopped.

75

celebrity life If I were a guy, they would not second-guess the fact that I actually do have the power to close this deal and to make it happen. That’s why I eventually changed the name of the company to Victoria Records, so there would be no more questioning that a woman was at the head of this company—one of the top recording studios in Latin America. It helped, and I never got asked again by any male executive to call my dad or one of my brothers to give me the green light.

As an all-around lady boss—artist, GRAMMYnominated producer, entrepreneur, streetwear designer and female advocate—it is safe to say you set a high bar for us. What advice would you give women just beginning their careers?

If you listen to the lyrics carefully, you’ll find how the five songs are connected and are part of the same universe I created for this first EP. My close friends who have heard them tell me my songs make them want to make bad decisions that make them feel more alive. I love the idea that my music could inspire people to experiment more with life and take charge of their bodies and their experiences. That’s what “Saints” is all about.

This issue is all about being thankful for the blessings life gives us. What are you grateful for?

I am grateful first and foremost for my family. My parents have been married for 48 years, and I have a very close-knit family, which is my anchor. We all live five minutes away from each other.

My biggest advice for anyone in any industry is not to place your happiness in your end goal. It took me a long time to actually be present and enjoy what was happening around me. I was so focused on reaching a series of very ambitious goals that I was missing out on all of the cool little moments my career was giving me on a day-to-day basis.

I am also grateful for having the studios and the dopest team of people with me at Victoria Records. It allows me to do a lot of collaborations and to work with a lot of artists I would not be able to work with otherwise. It also gives me the freedom to have full control of what I want to put out and when, which is extremely important to me because it allows me to be a completely genuine artist.

This industry is also all about the survival of the fittest. I always talk about this with other producers and songwriters. Sometimes it’s not about who is the most talented, but who stuck around the longest. I always say that talent without discipline is useless.

At BELLA, our tagline is “Beauty defined by you.” What does beauty mean to you, and how do you find it?

My other big thing is balance. I’ve had a lot of chances to move to LA, Miami, etc., but I’ve decided to stay in Mexico because I know being close to my family and my roots is what makes me happy and helps me function as the best version of myself. It’s important to know yourself really well before becoming part of such a crazy industry. If you don’t take the time to define who you are, this industry will end up defining you.

We know your forthcoming “Saints EP” is due out on November 13.

Yes! I am really excited about it. What I hope to achieve with this EP is to bring a full experience to people. Not just one single after another, but a body of work and a concept that’s defined by the duality in all of us.

76

To me, beauty is not tangible. In my lifetime, the most beautiful people, places, and things I’ve ever come across have had depth, a story, and fragility. They are often imperfect but real. I can almost immediately relate every person I meet to some character in a painting or in a book. It’s just how my brain works. I don’t focus too much on just the physical, tangible aspect of beauty, but if I had to, the only thing that makes sense to me is something that Pharrell said: ‘Individuality is the new wealth.’ It’s just so perfect. We should be about embracing what makes us unique and different. This world was getting very boring for awhile with everyone trying to look the same and reach the same impossible beauty standards. I feel like a change has been coming for a while now, making everything more inclusive, more colourful, more dynamic, and more interesting. This is where I find real incomparable beauty.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT HER LIFE ON-SCREEN AND OFF BY ALEXANDRA ANASTASIO

woman with many talents, Sara Gore has been sharing her love of food, entertainment, design, and all things New York City for quite some time. As co-host of NBC's “New York Live” with Jacque Reid, the powerful twosome share the very best of what the Big Apple has to offer. “Because of this show I always knows what’s going on in this city,” Sara says. “There’s always something new popping up. Doing this job keeps me at the forefront of what’s happening.” In the early days of her career, Sara pursued her love for cooking by working various jobs in the food industry, including managing her own catering company and working as a chef at V Steakhouse by internationally renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. And while her path eventually led to TV, the foodie at heart continues to marry her talent for cooking (and these days, baking) with her work on-screen. Sara’s creativity also expands into design, which makes her role as host of the Emmy award-winning show “Open House” the perfect fit. “Fortunately, most of everything I’ve done in my life has helped in some way or another with what I do now,” she says. up close & personal You’ve been a part of “New York Live” for a decade now. Would you say that constantly discovering new things about NYC is what keeps the show fresh and new for you?

Absolutely! And what an awesome city it is. I’m so grateful to be bringing our audiences the best of what the best city has to offer. Yes, I show up to the same place every day and work with the same people, but every day is different. I love live TV because you really never know what you’re going to get.

What are some of your favorite moments from these past 10 years?

There have been so many awesome moments; it’s hard to pinpoint. Hands down, I love any time a comedian comes on because they take it to such crazy places and we end up tossing our notes and trying to keep it together. A couple that come to mind—Marlon Wayans, Jim Gaffigan, Bill Bellamy, Jay Pharaoh, and most recently, my new favorite comedian guest, by far— Michelle Buteau. If you don’t know who she is yet, you will; she’s amazing.

been making it ever since. I love watching the dough rise, and I love the smell of baking. I make it into a heavenly pizza; it’s a crowd pleaser and worth every carb.

Speaking of baking, you make the most beautiful cakes. Are you self-taught?

I am deep in a cake phase. I love making cakes and have always enjoyed being creative—from writing to drawing to cooking. Right now I would say my cakes are my creative outlet. I feel like if the cakes don’t taste as good as they look, though, what’s the point? So it’s not just about looks for me. I started making over-the-top cakes when my kids were born. I wanted to make cakes they would remember forever and that they knew Mommy put a lot of love into. I keep challenging myself and trying new things. It’s been a lot of trial and error but all in all it’s been a lot of fun. And yes, I never took a class. The only cooking class I have ever taken is a brioche and croissant class and, sadly, I never make either.

Your passion for cooking began early on alongside your mom. Do you hope history repeats itself with your children?

I got married and had three kids since I started the show, so it’s been an amazing chapter in my life.

Yes, my mom is a great cook and I spent my childhood by her side watching and learning. We used to make and deliver a couple hundred desserts every Wednesday for the soup kitchen in our area and it taught me two things: How to make things in bulk, and how good it feels to give back.

I also loved being able to host the NBC red carpet pre-show for the Golden Globe Awards the past several years. A lot of work goes into it, but the excitement surrounding that type of event is undeniable.

My son Griffin used to say he wanted to be a chef but he hasn’t said that in a while. Now he just watches me make cakes and says that’s his favorite show. But I’m not giving up; these kids are, at the very least, going to have a signature dish!

In addition to “New York Live” you also host the show “Open House,” where viewers get an up-close look at some of the most exquisite homes both here and around the country. What excites you about this particular show?

I have a fascination with real estate and design and this show feeds right into my obsession. Who doesn’t want to see how people live?! I think it’s amazing to think that behind every door in one single apartment building is a completely different experience—one better than the next in a lot of these buildings I visit. I almost always find an idea I want to steal (and I have)!

Do you find your creativity kicks into high gear when you’re in these exquisite homes?

I’m always working on my home; it’s a never-ending project and I have stolen ideas plenty of times. After I visited [fashion designer] Lubov Azria at her home in Los Angeles, I started collecting sunburst mirrors. She had a ton of them and I loved it. She said she even had a huge collection of them in storage. I couldn’t help but think, where is this storage and can I have some? I started a full wall of them in my living room behind my couches; unlike a lot of things in my house, they’re still there!

As a former professional cook, what is your signature dish?

Years ago I used to make my sweet potato lobster hash with grapefruit vanilla buerre blanc. It was delicious and I haven’t made it in forever—thanks for the reminder; I’ll be making that soon. Otherwise, my kids love a big weekend breakfast. We do a lot of French toast, chocolate chip pancakes…you name it. I also love making homemade focaccia. At one restaurant I worked at in the West Village years ago, I would have to make it as soon as I got in, and I’ve Sara_Gore

We often hear people talk about work/life balance when it comes to raising a family. What are some of the challenges you face as a working mom?

It’s something I think every parent struggles with. Personally, I feel like I miss a lot of things at school because they happen while I’m on the air. One downside to doing what I do is that, as the saying goes, the show must go on. I worry that my kids will be disappointed that I can’t be there, but hopefully as they get a little older they’ll understand. I want them to see that work doesn’t have to be something you dread, and for me it is enjoyable. I hope that inspires them to do what makes them happy.

What are some of the life lessons you hope to pass along to your children?

Always do what you love and love what you do. Be honest, be kind, be loyal, and open to opportunities. Know your value and stand up for yourself. Go into everything as prepared as possible. And call your mother every chance you get!

As we look to the new year, what’s up next for you?

I’m hoping to be back at this year's Golden Globe Awards to cover the red carpet. Currently, I’m working on my website to share more of my recipes and DIY projects. I’m also working on some projects with my husband who is the filmmaker behind “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf ’s,” “Harry Benson: Shoot First,” and the upcoming Bob Mackie documentary. He’s supertalented so I look forward to working together on a project. Lots to look forward to…stay tuned.

cover story

t’s a warm autumn morning in early October when La La Anthony walks into the Hotel Hendricks in New York City. She changes her ensemble, checks her makeup, and walks in front of a camera for BELLA’s “Gratitude” cover shoot. A true professional, she shows up focused, delivers, and effortlessly strikes cover-worthy poses with every look. Achieving success and maintaining staying power in the entertainment industry isn’t an easy feat, but La La has demonstrated time and time again that it can be done. Her resilient drive has secured her roles as an actress, producer, TV host, author, and entrepreneur. She seems to fearlessly conquer every role, which she says stems from the confidence her father embedded in her. La La attributes her confidence to a motto her dad taught her early in life: ‘Love yourself from the inside out.’ “I remind myself that self-love is where love starts,” she explains. “It should be the basis for everything we do.” Building on such confidence helped La La start her career at the age of 16. With humble beginnings as a radio intern and eventually the host of the pop culture hit show, “Total Request Live” on MTV, she continued to evolve and transitioned into acting, producing, and writing two New York Times bestselling books. La La’s passion for acting is evident, as seen in movies roles like “Think Like a Man.” She is best known for her role as Lakeisha Grant on the hit TV show, “Power,” which is currently in its sixth and final season on STARZ. You may have also caught La La as Shay Barnes in “BH90210,” the reboot of “Beverly Hills 90120.” Playing opposite Brian Austin Green as David Silver’s wife, La La was the only Afro-Latino actress on the show. Next up? She will play a recurring role in Lena Waithe’s Showtime hit, “The Chi.” As La La explains, “You can’t cheat the work. Hard work does pay off. You wait for these opportunities. And then when you’re given them, you have to seize the opportunity and shine because some of these chances only come around one time.” It’s what helps keep her focused she says. “So definitely—work hard, know your craft, and really dig into what you’re doing.” La La’s other acting credits include a guest spot on ABC’s crime drama, “Reef Break,” and the upcoming Netflix film, “Holiday Rush.” She has also appeared in the critically acclaimed Spike Lee film, “Chi-Raq,” BET’s “The New Edition Story,” and “Baggage Claim.” La La also tried her hand in producing with a BET documentary film, “Killer Curves.” She made her Broadway producing debut in 2016 with “Eclipsed,” starring Lupita Nyong’o, which received a Tony Award nomination and made history as the first all-female, all-Black show on Broadway. Currently, she is working as a producer alongside Queen Latifah on the film adaptation of her novel, “The Love Playbook.” La La is also completing a project called “Intercepted” with Curtis Jackson, AKA 50 Cent. 84

cover story CHANGING THE FACE OF BEAUTY Her creativity and initiative don’t end there. La La’s latest fashion collaboration with Footlocker emphasizes her belief in supporting the changing narratives of beauty. Her collection is made up of versatile pieces for women of all sizes. Her goal is to encourage women to express their individuality through their fashion choices. “It goes back to self-love,” she says. “It’s about that inner confidence that we have that makes us all beautiful. It starts there.” La La has also teamed up with Andy Hilfiger on The La La Anthony Collection for Lord & Taylor, Nordstrom, Ashley Stewart, and other high-end department stores. Her beauty line, Motives for La La, is uniquely formulated for every shade of today’s woman.

BALANCING IT LIKE A PRO I asked Anthony how she manages to juggle all of her endeavors and deal with life in the public eye, and she explained that she draws on strength from her faith in God. “I have a strong belief in God. We’re in this world and…you love the good stuff that comes with it, but you don’t get to pick and choose the bad stuff. I roll with it and stay grounded with prayer and my family.” Indeed, La La’s gratitude for her family is strong. She acknowledges how they’ve supported her career and continue to help her maintain balance with her busy life, especially her mom, whom she refers to as her “hero.” La La and her husband, NBA star Carmelo Anthony, place great importance on family love being a constant, explaining that they are a united front when it comes to raising their son Kiyan. La La beams when expressing how Kiyan is her pride and joy. “My son is my greatest accomplishment; he’s my greatest joy. I’m teaching him how to be a young, respectable Black man in America and be cautious with the way he moves, the way he talks to people. [I want him to] be humble and gracious,” she says. “Having a son has been a really great experience for me.”

BE BETTER, DO GOOD For a woman whose face appears on the MET Gala’s red carpet, Tyler Perry Studio’s grand opening, and giving back to our youth alongside Michelle Obama, La La always emphasizes the bigger picture. From movies and television to radio and fashion, she is well aware of the responsibility that comes with her platform.

Quick 3 with La La What should every woman try at least once in her life? Some women should try being alone at some point in their lives to see what that feels like—being dependent on no one but yourself. That’s an empowering and amazing feeling. What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you? I’m a tomboy, and those who don’t know me might be surprised that I am a sneakers and sweats girl—that’s how you’ll see me when I’m out and about. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you were younger? Don’t worry about what everyone thinks. There’s nothing that we can do that will please everyone, and you have to know that. We have to figure out ways to be our own number one fan. If you’re constantly looking for outside validation, you’ll always be disappointed.

Her dedication to making the world a better place is what ultimately drives her. “When it’s all said and done, I want people to know I used my platform for good,” La La explains. “No one is put in this position by accident, and you have to use your platform to make a change in your community and in the world—big or small. That’s more important than any movie or TV show. I’ll always stay humble and never let this change who I am.”

How did you get your start in photography?

My father is responsible for introducing me to photography. He gave me my first camera when I was 12 and taught me how to use it and even taught me how to develop film. That was my beginning, and it grew from there. Years later, I went to art school and majored in photography, then went to New York City and got a job working as a photo assistant.

What is your favorite part about living in Japan?

There is so much I love about living in Japan, but if I had to pick one thing, it would be how the culture has changed the way I see the world and that has filtered into my work. The respect and dedication to work is in every part of life here and it has a strong influence on you when you live here.

What is the best part your job?

For me, the best part of being a photographer is being able to share my point of view in my images. In many ways, photography is a visual diary of your life—who you met, where you go, how you feel. I love that I get to share this and document my life. It’s never the same; it’s always full of surprises. Photography has taken me all over the world and given me a life I could never have dreamed of having.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I received came from one of my mentors, Gordon Parks, who told me it’s OK to be afraid to do something but never let the fear keep me from trying. Another mentor told me his biggest mistake was not doing a book of his photography, and I never forgot that. Today I have three published books and I’m working on my fourth book now. I was very afraid to do my first book but Gordon’s words were in the back of my head and I pushed past my fear and never looked back. Fear is just a part of success; it has to test you to see if you really want something. 90

What’s the biggest misconception people have about you?

I am not sure what people think about my journey, but the biggest misconception today is that photography is easy, but it’s never been easy to make a career as a creative. You have to work hard and smart for everything. It may be easier to use a camera today but that doesn’t make someone a photographer or give him or her a career. Photography is not easy, but if you follow the path others have created, you can have a wonderful life as a photographer.

What are you most grateful for?

I am most grateful for being blessed with great parents and mentors who helped guide me along my journey. Today, I try to give back by helping other photographers with their vision and journey. I am grateful for every day I get to share my work and passion with the world.

MATTHEW JORDAN SMITH IS THE RECIPIENT OF SEVERAL AWARDS AND HONORS, INCLUDING THE MICROSOFT ICON OF IMAGING AWARD, THE GEORGE EASTMAN POWER OF IMAGE AWARD, AND THE VISION AWARD.

Fashionable

Duet

Q&A with “The Chinese Fairy Coloratura Soprano” By Brady Goodman-Williams

N

ew York Fashion Week is known for many things—a Chinese opera soprano is not one of them. But this past September, couturier Vivienne Hu debuted her spring summer 2020 collection with an unlikely musical ensemble: American vocalist Elle Varner and Chinese “Fairy Coloratura Soprano” Chang Sisi. Performing Varner’s “Only Wanna Give It To You,” the duet rattled NYC’s Spring Studios and stood out as one of the highlights from this year’s runway shows. I was honored to speak with Chang to hear more about her journey and this milestone in the singer’s career.

What originally drew you to opera? How long have you been a professional singer?

I always loved singing. I started professional training at the age of 15. At that time I was exposed to coloratura. When I was around 20, I started to perform in front of a broader audience and collect awards from numerous music festivals. Shortly after, my composer started to write me a lot of coloratura pieces, and people started to associate me with my nickname, ”The Fairy Coloratura Soprano.” When I was 24, I became the youngest artist to hold a solo-concert at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China. That same year I was appointed as the youngest vice-chairman of the Shandong Province Musician Association.

Incredible! Tell me about your experience singing at the Vivienne Hu NYFW show. How did that happen? Were you nervous? Excited? How was the performance? It was a wonderful experience. It was my honor to perform at Vivienne’s show, and I was very excited when she proposed a duet between Elle and me. It was a creative move. Although I am a classical singer, I’m also fascinated by pop music, and I do take time to train myself to be more versatile.

Our collaboration went extremely well. I am confident about my skills and my voice; I could feel all the audience's eyes on me when I sang the first note. I greatly appreciated the opportunity. Despite the fact that I only had five days to learn the song and I spent most of the time learning the lyrics of the other two songs, I enjoyed this collaboration and I deem it a successful one.

Was this your first Fashion Week experience?

No, I have actually performed at another show and received a lot of positive feedback from the attending media. “Xuanjin,” the song I performed during Vivienne’s show, is one of my favorite pieces. “Xuan” in Chinese means dazzling. I find this a perfect description of the coloratura used in this song. “Jing” denotes a state of peacefulness and corresponds to the chanting part in this song.

Where are you currently performing? What’s next for you?

I have upcoming performances at international movie festivals in Macau and South Korea. This year, I will also participate in a concert with my mentor and friends in Canada.

Do you have any advice for readers out there who might be trying to pursue their own dreams, opera or otherwise?

Keep learning. As an old adage goes, “Good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation.” A lot of effort goes into achieving any goals; I always aim to be a better self through consistent learning and practice. THE LOVE FILES

YOU JUST GOT

DUMPED: HOW TO GET IT

RIGHT… OR VERY, VERY

WRONG By Jarrod Thalheimer

Nobody likes getting dumped. It hurts like hell, is often a surprise, and immediately throws your self-image into question. The trauma only grows as your head begins to spin with the fragments of relationships past: I always miss the signs—what happened this time? Why does no one love me? What did I do wrong? This isn’t fair! But the hard truth is that failed relationships are often the best road map to finding the truly great ones. Mistakes, and even pain, can have positive effects going forward…but only if you make the right decisions and avoid the wrong ones.

94

HOW TO GET IT RIGHT BE OBJECTIVE Objectivity in the face of personal pain can be difficult, especially when all you really want to see is the other person hit by a midtown bus. But the reality is that it takes two to tango, and you weren’t always perfect either. In fact, there may have been plenty of things you did that were just as mean, ugly, or thoughtless as the jerk who dumped you. Being objective allows for perspective, and that is what will ultimately make it possible for you to move on.

EMBRACE SOLITUDE After a dumping, the first fear is almost always of being alone forever. Images of frozen dinners for one, muttering cat ladies, and childless strolls through busy playgrounds flood our brains. Fight that nonsense. Being alone can be a great thing: It allows you time to reflect and to heal. The noise and fog of a relationship can be wonderful, but it can also obscure a lot of compromise and pain. Now that you are single, you can better take stock of who you are and what you want. Enjoy this newfound time with yourself. It’s far more useful than you know.

CHOOSE POSITIVE When you’re at your lowest this is the hardest advice to follow, but it is also the most important. All signs point negative right now, with your feelings and self-image shooting downhill fast. So you have to decide early on to view the situation with a positive eye instead of a negative one. It’s the old “glass half full or half empty” metaphor: The amount of liquid is the same; it’s how you choose to see it that matters. We always have a choice, but only positivity will set the stage for actual personal growth and genuine happiness.

BE THE BIGGER PERSON A reality of modern life is that you are going to run into this person at some point down the road. It might be at a party, a show, a gathering, or even at work. Obviously things will be uncomfortable, especially if you still harbor fantasies of planting a shrimp fork deep inside their left ventricle. Ditch that daydream. Real strength comes from release. If you can let it go and truly smile the next time you see them, it will prove that you can handle whatever life throws at you. REPLAY THE GOOD AND THE BAD Obviously, a dumping will trigger the traditional stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, etc.), which can lead to the irrational fear of all good times being gone forever. That’s fine. Grieving is important, and the death of any significant relationship deserves time and consideration. Just don’t forget the bad parts, too. There were lots of things you tolerated that you no longer have to. Remind yourself that the relationship was not always sunshine and roses. It will help soften the blow and lead you to a better place.

HOW TO GET IT WRONG TRY TO FIX IT Don’t ever do this. It’s desperate, needy, and absolutely doomed to failure. Consider: Even if you were to succeed at “fixing things” or “winning them back,” what did you actually win? A few extra innings in a relationship already lost? Remember, they dumped you. How can you have anything even resembling an equal partnership now? The only sensible thing is to walk away and determine what happened on your own. Any effort you spend trying to piece the relationship back together only delays the inevitable.

BECOME A STALKER Here’s a horrible idea: Decide that the best way to get them back is by following them obsessively and noting each and every person they are now spending time with. Aside from laying the groundwork for a future restraining order, what exactly is being accomplished here? Give it up. This kind of behavior is creepy and sad. Preserve your sanity, and avoid feeding the green-eyed monster at all costs. IS

ENOUGH?

Love is patient. Love is kind.

But is just love enough to offer in a relationship? In my recent dating adventure (and I call it an adventure because there’s always something new I learn every time I meet a potential suitor), I asked my date what he had to offer. “I may not be financially rich, but I can offer love,” he replied. His response left me wondering whether love alone is enough to sustain a relationship. What about financial stability or the other qualities I desire in my suitor?

pure energy with pure potential, and you are creating your own reality, attracting experiences and people into your world. Many people are unaware of how these energetic principles work, or how they can harness their energy to create deep fulfillment and happiness in their bedrooms and beyond. With “Quantum Love,” I take these seemingly complex ideas and break them down into terms everyone can understand and apply immediately to their own lives. But, at the end of the day, it can also show you how to leave toxic situations and attract better mates, if your current relationship is not healthy or desirable for you.

Now that online dating is the go-to place to find love, what should singles be asking during initial conversations?

I would encourage singles to think less about what they’re asking and more about what they’re saying. What are you showing to potential partners? How open and vulnerable are you being? Be authentic about who you really are and put forth the energy and qualities you want to find in a spouse, and you will be much more likely to attract that person to you.

I decided to ask the expert on relationships and dating, Dr. Laura Berman, for her opinion. For the last three decades, Dr. Berman has dedicated herself to helping people learn how to love and be loved better through couples’ counseling and intensive workshops, such as her recent sold-out workshop, “Quantum Love.” She has also appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Network and “The Dr. Oz Show” talking about this very topic.

Don’t worry about appearing flawless or putting forth a good persona. That isn’t going to attract authentic connection and a partner who will meet your heart’s desire. Be real, be present, and be brave: In doing so, you will attract the person who is meant for you, rather than people just aiming for shallow connections or hookups.

Is just love enough to sustain a relationship?

Of course! While there is nothing wrong with having specific lifestyle goals and working to achieve that level of financial comfort (and desiring a partner to do the same), love is what we were made for. It is our purpose here. And I firmly believe that we are here to learn how to love better, and how to remove the barriers we have placed between us and love.

In my previous three-year relationship, I was with a man who was missing some of the qualities I desired. I felt I was settling and not fully fulfilled. Why is that not a good thing to do?

Compromise is part of any healthy relationship, but settling is not. You have the right to expect fulfilling love and attention from your partner, and my book, “Quantum Love,” can show you many ways to achieve that. Readers can expect to learn how to truly be powerful when it comes to creating the love lives they desire. You are

BELLA’s tagline is “Beauty As Defined by You.” How do you define beauty?

Beauty to me is when a woman is not afraid to be vulnerable, when she is brave enough to be herself and embrace her identity—“flaws” and all. When I had breast cancer and lost my hair, I had to learn to love the new woman in the mirror and face the world without a security blanket. I had to let myself be broken open like a caterpillar coming out of a chrysalis. It was terrifying, but that experience taught me the true meaning of vulnerability and authenticity...and beauty.

So what’s my verdict on love? Although love may be enough to make a relationship sustainable, I should not settle for not having the other qualities I desire from a potential suitor. Therefore, my dating adventure continues. DrLauraBerman.com

Do these

Things During the

Holiday Season and Your Body Will Be

Grateful By Alesha Lazan

Bloating, fatigue, brain fog, and weight gain...how many of these sound familiar during the holidays? While the festive season provides a chance to indulge without guilt, your body isn’t always on the same page. Most of the time, we feel awful afterward. The culprit? A tablescape of foods full of sugar and inflammatory ingredients such as wheat and dairy. But there are ways to enjoy it but not overdo it, which is the reason most people tend to gain weight. 104

1

PICK AND CHOOSE Unfortunately, you can’t have it all, especially in this situation. You cannot have the carbohydrate-loaded dinner, the wine, and the dessert. You have to pick and choose your poison. If you know you love to indulge in dessert, then try and skip the carbs at dinner. Most people eat and drink it all and that’s when it affects your body!

2 3 4 5 MAKE A HEALTHIER VERSION

This is so easy to do nowadays. Google is your bestie! Anything can be made healthier without sacrificing taste. For instance, if your favorite dish is lasagna, use brown rice pasta instead of whole wheat. Try and experiment—you may even find yourself eating a vegan cheese and liking it (you never know!). Explore and open your taste buds to different foods…your body will thank you!

▶ Don’t be afraid to take initiative and bring your own dish! You may inspire another person to eat healthier that day, too.

FILL UP ON MAINS

Protein and vegetables should be the base of your plate; anything else should be a sideshow.

REMEMBER: IT’S A HOLIDAY

Holiday season does not mean you can indulge every day, it means you can indulge on the actual holiday itself. Most people get caught up and take a hiatus from their healthy lifestyles to enjoy the season (November and December). But indulging every day will get you into trouble and you will not like the results at the end.

KEEP IT MOVING

Move, move, move! The holiday season does not mean you forget the gym and not workout. This is even more crucial of a time to sweat! Keep to your routine as much as possible, and ▶ Create a special make a goal to workout at least 2-3 times per week. reward for yourself to Burning off the extra calories will leave you feeling keep you motivated to workout through the less guilty about that pie you just ate. holidays.

There you have it…indulge, but don’t overdo it! Your body will be grateful and you will feel better about heading into the season with all of these tips in mind.

Thirsty for

the Beauty Water Hype? Here’s what you need to know about

1907water

By Jennifer DeCillis Ever feel like you’re drowning in the amount of water you’re supposed to be drinking? Well, same! But what if we told you that while you drink those eight glasses a day, you could also be beautifying your skin and keeping your health in check? You may have heard some of the talk about “beauty water” and the benefits that come with drinking it. But what does that even mean, and what exactly constitutes a beauty-enhancing water? BELLA is dishing on our favorite H2O, New Zealand-based 1907water, and how it can naturally enhance your overall health and beauty routine. In New Zealand’s remote central plateau, deep in the alpine forests of the Kaimanawa Ranges, the most natural filtration process begins. Melted snow and rainwater travel through naturally filtering layers of volcanic rock and sandstone, picking up all the goodness from the rock minerals. The uncontaminated water finally arrives into a vast 50,000-year-old aquifer, 680-feet deep, where it rises under its own pressure to the surface. It’s here that the company bottles nature’s remedy to the modern world. Containing a naturally high alkalinity, 1907water helps to balance the acidity levels in our bodies caused by stress, poor sleep, and diet. This water is not only good for you, it’s also naturally delicious. The perfect combination of high alkalinity and lower mineral content creates a softer, sweeter, and silkier taste. 1907water is a family-owned company that first began bottling water in 2000. In 2012, the company rebranded as 1907water as a tribute to the pioneers who first began bottling water that year in the small town of Paeroa, New Zealand.

So, what is alkaline water, you ask? In a nutshell, water with a pH above 7 is considered alkaline. There are many competitive waters on the market that have been manufactured or enhanced to be alkaline, but 1907water naturally sits at a consistent 8.0. The complexities of the nine-step, ultrapurification process and the negative ionization needed to create alkaline water could make your head spin. What we can tell you is that 1907water stays as natural as possible and is quite fortunate that nature has provided such a high-quality water source in Paeroa, a town known for its beauty and purity.

THE BEAUTY BENEFITS

Our skin is an organ made up of cells, and cells are made up of water. If your cells are getting an ample amount of water, they function properly. Alkaline water is more easily absorbed by the body, which means alkaline water drinkers are better hydrated around the clock. This ultra-hydration is a key element in achieving beautiful, healthy, younger-looking skin. Hydration helps your skin produce more moisture and elasticity, both of which fight signs of aging and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pores, and puffiness. In addition, alkaline advocates believe in its proposed health benefits, such as antioxidants that absorb more quickly into the human body, coloncleansing properties, immune system support, and other detoxifying properties, including weight loss and cancer resistance. With a naturally high alkalinity, 1907water also helps to balance the high acidity levels in our bodies caused by stress, poor sleeping habits, and dietary patterns. As if hydration and beauty boosts aren’t appealing enough, 1907water is also environmentally conscious, made from 100% recycled materials, and their bottles are 100% recyclable. There are so many packaging options on the market at the moment, yet many recycling centers aren’t equipped to process some of the more popular types, like boxed waters or plant-based bottles and caps, meaning much of it ends up in landfills. Until recycling centers are able to recycle absolutely all of these materials, 1907water has no hesitation in claiming to have the best possible packaging on the market. All of their bottles are BPA, BPS, BHA, and BHT free, so you never have to worry about anything harmful leaching into your water. We think it’s safe to say that drinking water that does more than simply hydrate is a lot more appealing than chugging through your tap or basic bottled water. So, before you buy into the latest beauty fads and health kicks, start with drinking your daily eight ounces of water—and make sure it’s the 1907water brand.

GUILTY OF A HOLIDAY BINGE? HOW TO REALIGN YOUR BODY By Alesha Lazan

If decking the halls has you decking your mojo, it’s OK. We have all been there! Here are five ways to get in some wellness wishes during the binge-fest season.

110

1

FIND A CLASS

▶ Groupon or ClassPass are great ways to find and try out new classes near you. Check out a few of them, and see what you like best.

Sometimes working out alone isn’t always the most exciting, especially when you have low motivation to begin with. Find a new class that will light your fire again, and surround yourself with other people who feel the same. Get out of your comfort zone and try a workout you have never done before, keep an open mind, and don’t overthink it.

2

MAKE A NEW PLAYLIST

Most of us need a spark either before or during our workout that gets us pumped. Maybe you have been listening to the same songs day in and out—now is the time to change! Find songs that excite you and make you want to jump around.

3

JUICE IT.

The best reset after a sugar overload is drinking fresh juice (not store bought or orange juice). If you have a health food store nearby, they will most likely have a juice bar or fresh juice you can purchase. Nutrient-dense and easily absorbed, juice is the best way to flood your body with amazing nutrients.

▶ Your listening options are plentiful: The sports headphones market is expected to grow more than 14% through 2024.

▶ Make sure to

pick a juice with mostly vegetables and the least amount of fruit. My go-to is a kale, cucumber, spinach, lemon and beet juice…yum!

LOG YOUR FOOD

▶ Find a journal that inspires

you or has different prompts and/or motivational quotes. Look into Fitbook, which offers a range of books that are perfect for tracking workouts and your diet. LiveLifeFit.com, $22.95

5

Getting back into a healthy eating routine can be a let-down after all of the exciting foods you have just eaten, but keeping a food journal of what you eat throughout the day can get you back—and keep you—on track. Assess it at night to see what you can improve upon the next day. You do not have to be perfect, just try and get better each day!

DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF

▶ Love yourself

enough to make these small healthy changes. Putting yourself first isn’t selfish it’s necessary.

Things don’t happen overnight—be kind with yourself and trust the process. Make small goals every day that will be realistic for you to achieve. It is amazing what can be done in 30 days when you commit to yourself!

Now stop reading and go find your motivation!

Enhancing ‘Tis the Season for

Your Appearance By Alexandra Anastasio

As we approach winter, it’s no surprise that people have begun to slow down and stay inside a bit more. These colder, shorter days can affect our mood, with many people heading into hibernation mode. That’s why these upcoming winter months are the perfect time to schedule any type of cosmetic or plastic surgery procedure you may have been considering. According to Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, one of New York City’s top plastic surgeons, winter is ideal for two reasons—less sun exposure (courtesy of the extra time spent indoors) and people are much more covered up. “It’s a great time to prepare for those summer months,” says Dr. Preminger. “People are less exposed in the winter.” Thanks in part to the holidays, these are also the months in which people tend to put on a few extra pounds, so having procedures done now also helps people feel good. “People tend to feel down in the winter, and I think this is a good time to boost your mood,” points out Dr. Preminger. BELLA sat down with Dr. Preminger to learn more about the various procedures patients seek, along with why these tend to be the most sought-after treatments this time of year.

112

Depending on the degree of damage and a patient’s age, there is a spectrum of options available. They can do a gentle peel (more of a Mandelic peel), a TCA peel for those with more aggressive lines, Fraxel laser resurfacing, and even IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for pigmentation. We can also do Botox, fillers—it all depends on the patient’s age, the extent of the damage, and what they are looking to achieve.

When it comes to procedures such as chemical peels or laser resurfacing, is the downtime minimal?

There are two ways to do a peel—one is more of an aggressive, one-shot peel, while the second option would be a series of gentler peels, which don’t really have any down time at all. People usually look refreshed right afterwards. As far as Fraxel, it depends on the extent of the lines, how much of a result the patient wants to achieve, and how much downtime they have. Sometimes I will be less aggressive with it and other times more aggressive, with downtime usually around five to seven days maximum.

What about patients who are looking to take things a little further when it comes to refreshing their appearance?

For someone who is looking to really rejuvenate the face and neck area, I may suggest procedures such as micro needling with radio frequency, or FORMA, a noninvasive procedure that uses radio frequency to help with neck tightening. If we want to get a little more invasive, we can talk about a mini or full face or neck lift.

Since the colder months allow us to cover up a bit more with turtlenecks and scarfs, contouring the neck and chin seems to be ideal during this time of year. What procedures do you recommend? When I talk about the neck and chin area there are generally a couple of components to it as I describe to patients—the skin, fat, and muscle layers.

For example, I have younger patients primarily come in and tell me that they don’t have enough contour to the neck, and that’s often an issue of fat. Their skin is of reasonable quality but they have too much fat in that area. We can address that in one of three ways depending on how much extra tissue they have, how much of a result they want, and how invasive (or not) they want the procedure to be. The least invasive procedure is CoolSculpting, which is very effective. Next is Kybella, an injection of Deoxycholic acid, which literally dissolves the fat under the neck. Another procedure I do is called a FaceTite, which is a combination of liposuction with radio frequency that allows for additional skin tightening to the area. As patients get older they begin to deal with more than just fat. They start to develop loose muscle and loose skin. For those issues, we can look at doing micro needling with

radio frequency, or FORMA. And, of course, the most invasive procedure is an incisional procedure, such as a traditional neck or facelift.

What additional areas should people focus on during this time of year?

It’s a great time to deal with torn earlobes either from earrings that have torn through or ear piercings that have come really wide. This time of year you’re not swimming or out in the sun the same way you are in the summer. [You can also consider] one of the body contouring procedures, since you’re indoors more and able to cover up. Liposuction, breast procedures (implants, lifts, reductions), tummy tucks, even a nose job—all of these do really well in the winter.

Being in a position to help others must bring you a deep sense of gratification.

I love my job and I feel so lucky to be in a position to be able to shape, mold, create, and help people feel good about themselves. It’s powerful and life changing for them, and I am thankful every day.

As the year comes to a close, what are you most grateful for?

I am thankful for all of the opportunities that have been given to me, particularly by my parents and the examples they set, especially my father—also a physician—in terms of the way he loved his job and took care of his patients. My mother also set a great example for what it meant to work full time and have a family. You can’t take for granted all of the things that got you to where you are. None of my grandparents were American—a bunch were Holocaust survivors—and they overcame tremendous adversity for me to be able to stand here today. That is a really big deal. I’m super thankful for my kids and the support they give me; they’re my biggest advocates. I am also so thankful for the people who have taught and trained me over the years to do what I do and, of course, to my patients for trusting me with their care and referring family and friends; that’s the biggest compliment of all. BEFORE SURGERY: • Find a board certified plastic surgeon. • Ensure the surgeon you choose has experience with the procedure you’re having done. • Ask to review their before and after photos. • Make sure your aesthetic vision aligns with theirs.

“Enhancing your breasts can provide balance to your figure and greatly boost your self-confidence.” - Dr. Preminger Do you think your breasts are…Too small? Too large? Asymmetric? Do your breasts droop? Have you lost fullness? Some women have never been happy with the appearance of their breasts, while others have experienced significant changes over time. Whatever your concern, there is a solution. If you want to increase breast size and fullness, a breast augmentation may be the procedure for you. Three dimensional imaging can even help you visualize your result and find the breast size you desire. Some women have enough volume, but it’s all sitting in the lower part of the breasts causing sagging and drooping. This is particularly common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. A breast lift may be the key to restoring fullness in all the right places. Breasts that are too large, however, can cause back and shoulder pain and interfere with exercise and weight loss. If that’s your issue, a breast reduction may be the solution. At your consultation, we will discover what you like and dislike about your breasts and create a customized surgical plan that will address all of your breast concerns, leaving you looking and feeling your best - a more confident, beautiful you!

Gratitude Achieving an Attitude of

By Geraldine “Gerry” Viggiani, LCSW, LCADC, PMH-C

ary has a lot of challenges in her life. Her greatest challenge—and her greatest joy—is her daughter, Susan. Born with cerebral palsy, Susan requires 24-hour care as she is immobile and nonverbal. Each day Mary rises early before work so she can toilet, dress, feed, and prepare her daughter for school. School is expensive, but the care her daughter gets there is worth it. Afternoons are filled with doctor appointments and providing care for her daughter. Although married, her husband works nights, so Mary is the primary caregiver.

This allows Mary to step out of the toxic cesspool where her thoughts have taken her and into the light. Of course, it is not a miracle cure for depression and anxiety, but introducing the practice of gratitude has been a useful tool in improving the quality of her life. We are fast approaching the end of the year. Traditionally, this is a time for giving and reflection on what has passed and what is to come. It is a perfect time to begin a practice of gratitude—a gift to yourself and to those around you.

5

This is how Mary and I meet. I am a psychotherapist in private practice. Mary has sought out therapy with me to help her cope with these challenges. Mary often reports feeling depressed, anxious, and alone. Her hopeless thoughts about her life situation contribute to her depressed mood.

Ways to Bring Gratitude Into Your Life Bonus: Cultivating the practice with regularity will only increase the benefits.

In my office, Mary talks about her struggles, and her mood will dip as she shares all the hard things she experiences, how tired and lonely she is, and how trapped she feels. As she talks, she becomes tearful, her body bends inward, and you can visually imagine her spiraling down into this bleak and dark hole. Focusing on all that is bad or wrong can certainly do that. Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman is the leading researcher in the field of positive psychology. The field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. This is where the practice of gratitude comes in. Studied by Seligman and others, there is growing evidence that gratitude can help people feel greater happiness, appreciate what they have, create resilience despite life’s curveballs, and even improve health.

HOW GRATITUDE HELPS

Gratitude is a practice that enables us to identify our own strengths and what has contributed to that, which is empowering. It helps us see the glass as half full instead of half empty, and that creates hope and optimism for the future. In addition, gratitude helps us appreciate the positives in our lives—the people, things, and events that bring us joy. Reflecting on that works to alleviate loneliness and allows us to feel connected to something larger than ourselves. Lastly, expressing gratitude to others improves our relationships both personally and in the workplace. Remember Mary? We left off witnessing her spiraling down into the depths of despair as she recounts all that is difficult in her life. With practice and prompting, Mary is now able to stop the downward spiral and shift her attention to the multitude of people, things, and events for which she is grateful.

1

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS Create a journal or a list, daily or weekly, of five things you are grateful for. The list can contain both big and small things. Dig deep!

THINK “THREE”

3

2

This exercise is similar to counting your blessings, but instead of just listing the things you are grateful for, journal about three of them and add the reasons for your appreciation.

PRAY OR MEDITATE

4

Reflect through some quiet time set aside for meditation or prayer.

WRITE GRATITUDE LETTERS, OR MAKE VISITS.

Writing thank-you notes or visiting in person to share your gratitude is good for you and others!

5

OPT FOR EXPERIENTIAL CONSUMPTION

Instead of buying a material gift, purchase or create an experience to be shared. This will provide you and others with a chance to build additional opportunities for gratitude. 117

Because She Is

IS BECAUSE OF THESE SPECIAL PEOPLE As the founder of a non-profit, Because She Is, I am often asked what it took to start. The answer is simple—a story, an idea, and most importantly, support. It’s the support of others that breathes life into your story and idea and makes it a reality. It’s people making a personal choice to help when you don’t know where or how to begin, and who ask for nothing in return. These are the selfless people who helped lay the groundwork for Because She Is (BSI). By Maureen Spataro Photography by Mary Foti, Nautical Media Group

JOANNE DAVE COLELLA NIERATKO Colella Communications, Owner and Executive Chef, Holmdel, NJ

Culinary Classics, Sayreville, NJ

A longtime writer and editor-in-chief of The Journal Publications, Joanne approached me to do a story upon learning about Because She Is. I was nowhere near getting my non-profit status or even a location, but Joanne remained undeterred. So deeply did she believe in what I wanted to accomplish that she freed up some space in the magazines to tell my story.

It’s a rare moment when you will walk into the Culinary Classics kitchen on Main Street in Sayreville, NJ, and not find Dave whipping up an array of delectable dishes for his many clients. A chef of limitless talent and one of New Jersey’s premier caterers, Dave and I met as members of a networking group four years ago, and he continues to be one of the biggest supporters of Because She Is.

Since that first article, Joanne has written four additional pieces, including a profile in the last issue of BELLA. She has never wavered in her belief of BSI. Now the head of Colella Communications, Joanne’s passion for Because She Is has become even more integral as our head of public relations. 118

With no money or backing, I shared with Dave my desire to host my own speaking engagement in the hope it would allow me to publicly introduce my idea for Because She Is. Without hesitation, Dave provided a hall for my very first event, as well as an array of mouthwatering food for all who attended—at no cost. Dave’s generosity and continued support has allowed me to speak with confidence by providing a friendly, familiar space that proudly offers a caliber of food that elevates my events to a higher level.

MARY FOTI KELLY Nautical Media Group DONOVAN An accomplished and creative force of President, Because She Is Kelly Donovan shares a close relationship with Joanne Colella, who told her about my story and dream. Kelly called me one day and said she had something she thought would help the organization. We met for breakfast, where she shared that she, too, was a survivor, and with the legacy of a generous benefactor was going to provide me the seed money to gain our non-profit status and begin pulling the pieces together to help make Because She Is a reality. The benefactor’s name? Marilyn. It is because of Kelly’s steadfast belief that survivors helping survivors is a vital component to pushing through trauma that Because She Is now has its first official location, Marilyn’s Place. Our sweet location is where members meet every Saturday to laugh, cry, share, and lend support. And we are proud to now be offering clinician-led workshops, art therapy, meditation, and social events all free of charge.

nature, I immediately knew I wanted to work with Mary just five minutes into our first meeting. Not only was it clear to me she was the photographer and videographer whose talent could help visually introduce BSI to the public, she was also someone I could trust both personally and professionally. Her patience and thoughtful observations, as well as her generous offer to assist in putting together a marketing video has formed a relationship I cherish. In addition to her post-production work for “Good Morning America,” editorial accomplishments for A&E’s “Biography,” “The First 48,” and “I Survived,” and on-air promos for Nickelodeon and Oxygen, Mary has written, produced, and directed multiple commercials and music videos for independent clients.

The choice to give of themselves and their talents to support Because She Is continues to strengthen the base on which we grow.

COLD WEATHER

ESCAPE By Alexandra Anastasio

As November gets underway and the holidays are right around the corner, along comes the promise of colder weather. Swimsuits have been traded in for winter coats, and most folks are preparing for the long winter months ahead. Before the temperatures drop even lower and the holiday madness kicks into high gear, a quick escape to The Diplomat Beach Resort, located in Hollywood, Florida, will help mentally prepare you for the upcoming season. The beautiful beachside resort stretches from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway, making it the ultimate getaway.

travel | getaway

From families with children to couples looking to unwind and disconnect, the hotel, which underwent a complete transformation in 2017, provides the ultimate backdrop for fun in the sun. Positioned between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, it is easily accessible with a short flight for East Coasters. Immediately upon stepping foot inside, the dramatic light-filled lobby of The Diplomat greets you, and it’s easy to understand why this playground by the ocean was voted one of the top 10 resorts in Florida by Conde Nast Reader’s Choice in 2018. Even the guest rooms offer a stunning view of the Atlantic, not to mention the décor, which leaves you feeling like you’ve walked into your own personal beachfront property. During your stay at “The Dip,” you’ll never be at a loss for things to do—there truly is something for everyone. Whether you want to relax on the beach, lounge poolside in one of the 25 cabanas available, or for the more adventurous vacationer, check out the water activities like paddle boarding, jet skiing, kayaking, and the newest addition, the Dip+Slide water play area, you’ll be kept busy from sun-up to sun-down. 122

A MECCA OF WELLNESS If you’re looking for some pampering after a long day in the sun, there’s no better place to unwind then at The Diplomat Spa + Wellness, a 14,000-square-foot facility with an ocean view lounge that overlooks the Atlantic. It feels like you’ve just stepped into paradise. The menu of services is extensive—from facials to body treatments, and massages such as the Diplomat Signature or Holistic Healing massage, there are even ones desired specifically for couples. Along with the various treatments, you do not want to miss out on the other amenities the spa has to offer. There’s a Halotherapy salt steam room, an aromatherapy sauna, a Vichy shower, and a relaxation room complete with a rain wall. This spa definitely takes relaxation to a whole new level.

DINE TO YOUR HEART’S DELIGHT Every great vacation requires equally amazing dining experiences, and the hotel does not disappoint with eight dining destinations to choose from. Restaurants like Diplomat Prime, a 1950s-inspired steakhouse; Point Royal, serving up American cuisine from Chef Geoffrey Zakarian; and Monkitail, a Japanese dining experience from celebrity chef and restaurateur Michael Schulson should be on your list of places to dine at while staying at “The Dip.” One of the great things about Monkitail is the Chef ’s tasting menu; when you can’t decide what to order because it all looks that good, this option allows you to choose one of everything. And if you have a sweet tooth, you can’t miss out on Candy & Cones, a sweets shop offering up a variety of candy and homemade ice cream. It’s truly a candy lover’s dream. Before you wrap up the evening, grab a drink (or two!) at one of the hotel bars. Nokku, tucked away behind Monkitail’s dining room, is a cocktail lounge that offers private rooms for karaoke. CHECK OUT THE CITY’S POPULAR NEARBY ATTRACTIONS LIKE HOLLYWOOD’S HISTORIC OCEANFRONT BOARDWALK AND FABULOUS SHOPPING AT THE AVENTURA MALL, BAL HARBOR SHOPS, AND LOS OLAS BOULEVARD.

PROSECCO DOC:

Beauty &Bubbles The Land of

S

ituated among nine stunning provinces in northeast Italy By Courtenay and Daniel Hall (between the Dolomites and the Adriatic Sea), you will find the most beautiful landscape you will ever come upon. Is it comprised of rolling hills and flat lands filled with Prosecco vineyards for as far as the eye can see. This past July, we spent five days with Prosecco DOC touring seven winemakers throughout the DOC and DOCG. One does not truly realize the commitment, technology, and family tradition that goes into each bottle until you are there–in person–meeting with the families and walking through the process of harvest to bottling. What makes Prosecco DOC so unique is the interaction between the climate, soil, and winemaking tradition. Although the art of cultivating vineyards in the fertile Prosecco areas has been developed over centuries, it is really over the past several years that the production of these sparkling wines has been perfected. Throughout our tour, the one word we heard repeatedly was “Glera”— the grapes used for making Prosecco DOC. The Glera grape is a type native to Northeast Italy and renowned since Roman times. This white grape variety with nut-brown vines produces long, generous bunches of golden yellow grapes. Cultivation involves vertical training of the shoots and thinning, as well as pinching and trying to create the perfect microclimate to encourage aromatic substances to settle on the grapes.

DURING OUR VISIT, WE TOURED THE FOLLOWING WINERIES:

Prosecco DOC in the province of Treviso and Pordenone MASOTTINA: Located in the hilly area of Conegliano, sustainability is at the center of the company’s philosophy. The territory and the care of every single detail are key elements of the Masottina production philosophy. The history of the Dal Bianco family is closely linked to these magnificent hills, and it is here that every aspect of tradition is reinterpreted in a modern and exalted key through a rigorous commitment to every area of production. BOTTEGA: This family winery located in the province of Treviso upholds quality, design, and innovation as its company’s values. From the vineyard to the bottle, each moment of product creation is monitored with artisan care and attention to detail. Having received over 280 prizes and awards, Bottega can be found in 132 countries and is one of the most sought-after Prosecco brands. In addition, Bottega is certified IFS and BRC Global Standard for food safety (in 2018 with AA – level of excellence), it’s also part of the Institute Eccellenze Italiane Certificate, an association that unites Italian excellence producers from different sectors and high-profile companies. Bottega is also ISO 9001 certified for its Quality Management System. PIERA 1899: Located in the province of Pordenone and founded in 1899, this successful brand is currently run by Piera Martellozzo, the granddaughter of founder Giovanni Piera. The recognized quality of Piera 1899 wines is the result of everyday arduous work founded on respect for the land and its traditions nurtured by an innate propensity for innovation, professionalism, responsibility, and openness to the new. These are the values that inspire Piera Martellozzo. Expanding her working group, she has built a cohesive team of trained professionals with whom she shares her drive for quality and respect for the environment she works in.

PROSECCO DOC in the areas of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene LA MARCA: Founded 40 years ago, LA MARCA is the largest winemaker sitting on the most magnificent grounds, which are still occupied by members of one of the local royal families. Located in Castello Roganzulolo, LA MARCA is a second level cooperative representing nine cooperative wineries. Their blue label has become a staple in the US. Having lunch inside LA MARCA was truly a special treat! MIONETTO: This vineyard was founded in 1887 and is located in Valdobbiadene. In 1982, the Mionetto family introduced autoclave fermentation by switching to the Charmat method, which allows for better preservation of the flavors and aromas of Prosecco. From the beginning, Mionetto has always been a modern and innovative winery able to anticipate trends, while marinating a strong bond with traditions from the homeland. VILLA SANDI: Part of the DOCG and devoted to wine culture for many generations, the Moretti Polegato family, owner of the Villa, has fostered this ancient tradition by making Villa Sandi the headquarters of the winery, and by promoting grape growing in the area on a modern basis. As the only winery from the DOCG that we toured, it was

amazing to see the differences between the two–the hills, vineyards, and VIP on-site accommodations were really something special! We even signed a bottle (that only their top clients can do!), which will remain in the Villa Sandi villa for the remainder of time. That is something we still can’t get over! BAROLLO: Located just outside of Venice, BAROLLO is managed by two young brothers who describe their wine as young, passionate. and modern (like them!). With a modern, fresh approach, these brothers have taken their family heritage and brought it into 2019. With each tour, we felt we learned even more–about the grapes, the history of the families, and the vineyards. The love, passion, and respect that goes into raising Glera grapes, harvesting them, and turning them into a distinct-tasting Prosecco is something I will always think about when I open my next bottle. Every wine has a story to be told–and the story of Prosecco is one of the most BELLA of all!

If your Prosecco bottle does not have the blue DOC label, it is not from the Italian Prosecco region.

WHAT IS THE DOC?

DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata (Denomination of Controlled Origin), a mark of international recognition based on compliance with the official product specification. Like DOCG - Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin, it is included in EU standards for Denominations of Protected Origin.
