AT THIS YEAR’S BEEF DAY all five Student Managed Livestock Units will be present to showcase what their hard work and determination has yielded thus far. Here you will see the Purebred Beef Unit, Commercial Beef Unit, Research Unit, Sheep Unit and Dairy Unit. On behalf of the Purebred Unit of the Student Managed Farm – powered by New Holland, we are proud to present the 4th Annual Beef Day Bull Sale on Friday, March 24. We believe that the offering of bulls and female replacements are an admirable representation of our breeding programs at Lakeland College. The Lakeland College purebred herd was founded in 1938 when members of the Angus association agreed to donate top females to the Alberta Department of Agriculture. The Department decided the herd of 13 head would be housed at Vermilion School of Agriculture and the OAV tattoo was established in the spring of 1939 with the first calf crop! In the 1950s, the herd was relocated to the Peace country when the Fairview School of Agriculture was established. With the introduction of the Lakeland College Animal Science Student Managed Farm and the desire to allow students to have experience with a purebred herd, negotiations began to bring the herd back to its original home. In 2006, Lakeland College purchased 24 pairs from Fairview College and brought them back to Vermilion. The OAV prefix continues to provide educational experiences to the next generation of producers. As we continue to expand and grow as an operation we strive to source the best possible genetics in the market. The continued expansion of our embryo donation program supports our positive growth. We would like to invite you to come out and view our program on March 24 and we encourage you to be on the lookout for video footage of each lot.If you have any questions or would like further information please feel free to contact anyone on the Purebred SMF Unit. This stout Roar son out of a first calf heifer is strong over his top and you can really admire him for his long body. He has a lot of performance considering he is one of our younger bulls on offer.
LOT 3 Benny is one of the unit’s favourites. He is an unregistered Angus bull that continues the trend of being one of our most impressive bulls in the sale. Being long bodied, super thick and having all the power you could ask for, Benny has got herd bull written all over him!

LOT 4 A half-brother to last year’s high seller, this guy is everything the unit has been working towards in our herd. He possesses extreme length of body, while being smooth through his front end as well as having solid muscle definition. This bull ties structural correctness into his phenotype that comes from a cow that has yet to disappoint after nine years of production.

selectheifers COMMERCIAL
The Commercial Unit has three pens of four heifers on offer at Beef Day. These select females have been hand-picked from the Lakeland College Commercial replacement pen and will add maternal characteristics, dimension, and overall performance. This powerful group of SimmentalBlack Angus-cross replacement heifers would be beneficial to your herd. The heifers’ birth dates range from January to early March, with an average birth weight of 85 pounds. These heifers were vaccinated with Ultrabac 7, One Shot, and Bovishield Gold in the fall, and will have all received Ivomec and been palpated prior to the sale.
livestockresearch
“The word research is being used like we are the researchers; however we are the managers of this research herd. We manage the herd as if it was our own and we decide what research is done with our animals and our facility.” – Kebbi Rhyner The Livestock Research Unit is new to the Student Managed Farm Powered by New Holland. It was initiated to collect and provide data to the industry, mimicking an extensive commercial operation. The herd’s purpose is to provide producers with an inside look into livestock research trials. Selection is based on moderate frame size, reproductive soundness and calving ease, with plans to calve on pasture in the future. The cattle will graze 365 days, allowing us to utilize all our options for grazing and keep wintering costs to a minimum. The research unit has a lot to offer; we have a state-of-the-art facility that features covered GrowSafe bunks to measure individual feed intake, and an 80-cow herd to be used for future projects. We feel very privileged and honored to lay foundation in the direction of new technology for the industry. Being able to take skills we have learned back home to help improve our farms, industry and shape the next generation of producers is satisfying.

TO OUR DONORS We would like to thank these producers for their generous donations of embryos. It was an honour to showcase these genetics throughout our year as the Purebred Unit. This helped us further our genetics with some of the industry’s best. As we venture into the genetic pool and focus on the thought of a larger Beef Day, one thing is certain, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support from these generous breeders.
